Driving is an involving activity and people experience many negative emotions especially if they are experiencing a traffic jam or if other drivers are acting inconsiderately. This might result in road rage, a condition caused by annoyance and that often results in aggression on the road. Road rage increases the probability of a driver committing traffic offences or even risking the lives of other road users. Stricter laws should therefore be passed to discourage people from engaging in road rage.

Road rage causes aggressive driving which may result in fatal accidents. When a driver experiences road rage, he/she may engage in reckless driving in an effort to retaliate or frustrate the other driver. Some of these aggressive driving includes following other vehicles too closely and switching lanes at random and without indicating.

Some drivers drive at excessive speeds and ignore stoplights because of road rage. Such behaviour increases the likelihood of accidents being caused by the driver who has road rage. Media reports reveal that the number of accidents caused by road rage is on the increase. This accidents are not only restricted to the drivers on the road. The lives of people not directly involved in the confrontation such as cyclists and pedestrians are also jeopardized by road rage.

Road rage leads to distractions on the road as the driver focuses on activities such as verbal arguments with other drivers. In some instances of road rage, drivers engage each other in verbal insults or make rude hand gestures at each other. I have seen drivers stick their hands outside their windows as they engage other drivers in intense arguments.

As they are doing this, their attention is not on the road. This is an important consideration since drivers are required to demonstrate high levels of alertness to the road and their surroundings at all times. This distraction caused by road rage increases the chances of causing an accident as the drivers focus less on the road.

Road rage can cause physical fights between drivers with bad results. The high frustration experienced during road rage can cause drivers to physically attack each other. Because of the great anger felt, the physical violence can lead to severe consequences. For example, there are cases where the injuries inflicted on a driver lead to assault charges being made against the aggressive driver. A driver therefore risks having a criminal record because of damages inflicted because of road rage.

In addition to the annoyance caused to other road users, road rage causes disturbance to businesses that are near the road. Road rage is often characterized by loud yelling by the drivers involved. Other drivers engage in unnecessary honking in an attempt to get the attention of the other drivers or to annoy them.

I have encountered this disruption at my favourite cafe, which happens to be near a road. The noise caused because of road rage often spoils the atmosphere at the cafe. Road rage disrupts the activities of nearby businesses, which have to deal with all the noise being generated.

Increases in the cases of road rage have made our roads more unsafe than they were in the past. This paper has argued that stricter laws should be put in place to help discourage this behaviour. To support this claim, a discussion of some of the negative causes of road rage has been made. Every safety-minded citizen should support strict legislation against road rage in order to make the roads safe for everyone.

In June 2021, a man and woman were charged with the shooting of a 6-year-old boy on a Southern California freeway,[i] involving firing at the victim’s car after a traffic dispute. People across the nation are asking: Why? What factors cause driving disputes to turn deadly? Research has some answers.

Driving While Angry

Most people instinctively avoid drivers who drive erratically. But over the years we have become increasingly wary of drivers who break even basic traffic laws including speeding and failing to signal. This instinct is well-founded.

According to the American Psychological Society (APA) in a post aptly entitled “The Fast and the Furious,”[ii] road rage can be caused by environmental factors such as crowded highways, psychological factors such as high life stress and displaced anger, as well as factors such as youth. They also note what some people might expect instinctively given the emotional aspect of road rage, that research has linked road rage and alcohol and drug abuse .

The APA post quotes counseling psychologist Jerry Deffenbacher, who lists several ways in which self-identified high-anger drivers engage in hostile, aggressive thinking, express disbelief about how others drive, and consider revenge —sometimes including physical harm. Deffenbacher also mentions specific ways in which angry drivers take more risks on the road, including exceeding the speed limit by 10-20 miles per hour, rapidly switching lanes, tailgating, and running red lights.

He explains that high anger drivers become angry more quickly and behave more aggressively, resorting to honking, yelling, or swearing at others. But as we might imagine, this anger is not limited to behind the wheel. Deffenbacher notes that road ragers are more likely to be angry throughout the day. He explains that drivers with shorter fuses are more impulsive and anxious as well.

The dangerous link between negative emotions and actions behind the wheel may be exacerbated by conditions on the road.

Causes of Road Rage

Some road ragers are angry before they get behind the wheel. But traffic conditions can exacerbate the situation. Most people have experienced the stress of an unexpected freeway closure or traffic break; it is the response to such stressors that distinguishes people prone to road rage from others.

According to other researchers, road rage involves both emotion , and the ability to regulate emotion.[iii] Bjureberg and Gross (2021) propose a working definition of road rage as “a form of fairly intense behaviorally maladaptive anger often cued by driving-related stimuli while operating a vehicle or riding in one as a passenger.” They observe that anger experienced while behind the wheel has been defined as “anger that occurs in response to driving-related stimuli while operating a vehicle or riding in one as a passenger.” Nonetheless, they note that driving anger does not always result in bad behavior, because some people are able to deal with anger constructively. They also note, however, that in the same way that anger is often linked with aggression , it is also sometimes linked with aggressive driving.

But not always. What makes the difference? Sometimes operator emotions are driven, so to speak, by both predisposition and preparedness.

How to Ensure You are Not a Road Rager

How can you ensure that you are not that angry driver? Here are a few helpful tips. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to reach your destination so you are not driving recklessly or aggressively. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, your cell phone, an address pre-programmed into your GPS, and anything else taken care of that would otherwise complicate your journey. And emotions matter too. Don’t get into the car to “blow off steam.” Instead, make sure you are level-headed enough to get behind the wheel and not under the influence of anger.

In addition to avoiding negative emotion, highway homeostasis is enhanced through positive emotion. Safe driving involves patience and empathy. There might be a good reason someone is traveling too slow for your liking or is hesitant to proceed even on a green light. Let’s all consider the larger goal of protecting each other on the road, and arriving safely at our destination for the sake of ourselves and our loved ones.

Moscow police break up fight in middle of road involving porsche driver and cyclist.

A road rage incident in Moscow, Russia was thankfully broken up by police who had been passing by before it could escalate any further.

A video by Jukin Media shows how a Porsche driver and his passenger were caught off guard by a cyclist crossing the road.

The two became so angry that they stopped their car and got out to assault both the cyclist and the driver of another car behind them.

Unfortunately for them, an unmarked police van was right behind them and several officers hopped out to break up the fight and arrest the men.

1) Exercise Self Control

The basic rule to nip any incident of Road Rage in bud is – don’t provoke, neither get provoked. If you are late for job, stressed out and struggling in traffic and a driver suddenly tries to move ahead, blocking your way. Don’t get enraged as it would only escalate the situation leading to fatal consequences. Keep calm and let him move, maintaining your dignity. Similarly, whatever the situation may be, you should never provoke other drivers or passengers.

2) Don’t Drink and Drive

Driving under influence of alcohol is the most significant causes leading to Road Rage. Alcohol interprets with one’s ability to think, judge and make decisions apart from instilling over confidence and aggressive behaviour. While driving under the influence of alcohol you are most likely to provoke, insult and yell at other drivers. It would be a great decision to let the chauffer drive the car while you relax in the back seat.

3) Don’t Honk too Much

Honking too much of horn might be provocative to other drivers and perceived as a challenge, more so if they are caught in a traffic jam or stressed over something else. So avoid honking unnecessarily and understand that everyone is in a hurry as you are and there is a need to exercise patience.

4) Don’t Stop

Don’t stop your vehicle if confronted by a rogue driver. In case if you are forced to stop, make sure that you stay inside the securely locked vehicle, until help arrives. Always, no matter what, avoid an argument and confrontation, as it would only further escalate the situation, resulting in harmful consequences.

5) Stricter Penalty

Stricter punishments and penalties for those involved in road rage will stop the offenders from breaking the law. Persistent police vigils against drunken driving and other similar offences, must be hiked 24/7. Zero tolerance policy for any road rage offence should also be ensued, and perpetrators must be booked instantly giving them no time to excuse.

Road Rage is a criminal offence and the law enforcement agencies must deal with offenders strictly. It is also the moral obligation of any driver, to display maturity and concern for the safety of others. We should resist from venting our own frustration and stress onto other poor unsuspecting road users or drivers. Life is much precious, more than the issues those occupy our mind. Extreme caution and care must be exercised while driving/riding on road, avoiding arrogance and negligence, as it might have fatal consequences.

Ivan the terrible, learning objective.

A state policy enacted by Ivan IV that made him absolute monarch of much of the north and hailed in an era of boyar persecution. Ivan IV successfully grabbed large chunks of land from the nobility and created his own personal guard, the oprichniki, during this era.

Ivan IV Vasileyevich is widely known as Ivan the Terrible or Ivan the Fearsome. He was the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 to 1547 and reigned as the “Tsar of all the Russias” from 1547 until he died in 1584. His complex years in power precipitated military conquests, including Kazan and Astrakhan, that changed the shape and demographic character of Russia forever. He also reshaped the political formation of the Russian state, oversaw a cultural Renaissance in Russia, and shifted power to the head of state, the tsar, a title that had never before been given to a prince in the Rus’ lands.

Rise to Power

Ivan IV was born in 1530 to Vasili III and Elena Glinskaya. He was three when he was named the Grand Prince of Moscow after his father’s death. Some say his years as the child vice-regent of Moscow under manipulative boyar powers shaped his views for life. In 1547, at the age of sixteen, he was crowned “Tsar of All the Russias” and was the first person to be coronated with that title. This title claimed the heritage of Kievan Rus’ while firmly establishing a new unified Russian state. He also married Anastasia Romanovna, which tied him to the powerful Romanov family.

Domestic Innovations and Changes

Despite Ivan IV’s reputation as a paranoid and moody ruler, he also contributed to the cultural and political shifts that would shape Russia for centuries. Among these initial changes in relatively peaceful times he:

• Revised the law code, the Sudebnik of 1550, which initiated a standing army, known as the streltsy. This army would help him in future military conquests.
• Developed the Zemsky Sobor, a Russian parliament, along with the council of the nobles, known as the Chosen Council.
• Regulated the Church more effectively with the Council of the Hundred Chapters, which regulated Church traditions and the hierarchy.
• Established the Moscow Print Yard in 1553 and brought the first printing press to Russia.
• Oversaw the construction of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.

Oprichnina and Absolute Monarchy

The 1560s were difficult with Russia facing drought and famine, along with a number of Tatar invasions, and a sea-trading blockade from the Swedes and Poles. Ivan IV’s wife, Anastasia, was also likely poisoned and died in 1560, leaving Ivan shaken and, some sources say, mentally unstable. Ivan IV threatened to abdicate and fled from Moscow in 1564. However, a group of boyars went to beg Ivan to return in order to keep the peace. Ivan agreed to return with the understanding he would be granted absolute power and then instituted what is known as the oprichnina.

This agreement changed the way the Russian state worked and began an era of oppression, executions, and state surveillance. It split the Russian lands into two distinct spheres, with the northern region around the former Novgorod Republic placed under the absolute power of Ivan IV. The boyar council oversaw the rest of the Russian lands. This new proclamation also started a wave of persecution and against the boyars. Ivan IV executed, exiled, or forcibly removed hundreds of boyars from power, solidifying his legacy as a paranoid and unstable ruler.

Military Conquests and Foreign Relations

Ivan IV established a powerful trade agreement with England and even asked for asylum, should he need it in his fights with the boyars, from Elizabeth I. However, Ivan IV’s greatest legacy remains his conquests, which reshaped Russia and pushed back Tatar powers who had been dominating and invading the region for centuries.

His first conquest was the Kazan Khanate, which had been raiding the northeast region of Russia for decades. This territory sits in modern-day Tatarstan. A faction of Russian supporters were already rising up in the region but Ivan IV led his army of 150,000 to battle in June of 1552. After months of siege and blocking Kazan’s water supply, the city fell in October. The conquest of the entire Kazan Khanate reshaped relations between the nomadic people and the Russian state. It also created a more diverse population under the fold of the Russian state and the Church.

Ivan IV also embarked on the Livonian War, which lasted 24 years. The war pitted Russia against the Swedish Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Poland. The Polish leader, Stefan Batory, was an ally of the Ottoman Empire in the south, which was also in a tug-of-war with Russia over territory. These two powerful entities on each edge of Russian lands, and the prolonged wars, left the economy in Moscow strained and Russian resources scarce in the 1570s.

Ivan IV also oversaw two decisive territorial victories during his reign. The first was the defeat of the Crimean horde, which meant the southern lands were once again under Russian leadership. The second expansion of Russian territory was headed by Cossack leader Yermak Timofeyevich. He led expeditions into Siberian territories that had never been under Russian rule. Between 1577 and 1580 many new Siberian regions had reached agreements with Russian leaders, allowing Ivan IV to style himself “Tsar of Siberia” in his last years.

Madness and Legacy

Ivan IV left behind a compelling and contradictory legacy. Even his nickname “terrible” is a source for confusion. In Russian the word grozny means “awesome,” “powerful” or “thundering,” rather than “terrible” or “mad.” However, Ivan IV often behaved in ruthless and paranoid ways that favors the less flattering interpretation. He persecuted the long-ruling boyars and often accused people of attempting to murder him (which makes some sense when you look at his family’s history). His often reckless foreign policies, such as the drawn out Livonian War, left the economy unstable and fertile lands a wreck. Legend also suggests he murdered his son Ivan Ivanovich, whom he had groomed for the throne, in 1581, leaving the throne to his childless son Feodor Ivanovich. However, his dedication to culture and innovation reshaped Russia and solidified its place in the East.
