What does a thesis do for me?

Fall Semester: Preparatory Work

If they have not done so in the the Spring of the junior year, thesis candidates should consult with faculty prior to Registration Day to determine who would be an appropriate advisor. The thesis will eventually be read and evaluated by three faculty members: the advisor my suggest second and third readers, or may leave the decision to the student. Developing an argument takes time, but candidates should begin with a clear set of interests in mind, and ideally with background reading underway. Students may choose to focus on a particular author or literary text, or to connect several authors and texts through attention to a shared thematic or formal pattern.

Spring Semester: 12-Unit Thesis

During the spring semester, the thesis candidate signs up for the 12-unit Thesis and devotes substantial energy to expanding, completing, and revising the work. The student should continue to meet on a regular basis with the advisor, and should also be sharing draft chapters with the second and third readers as soon as possible. The thesis process involves extensive revision as well as writing, and students need to anticipate that as the semester proceeds their readers will have an increasing number of competing demands on their time from other classes: chapters may not be returned with comments and recommendations for revision until some time after being submitted, and thesis writers need to plan accordingly. A complete first draft should be submitted by the end of spring break or the beginning of April, depending on the academic calendar and the advisor’s schedule. What are the challenges of a literature review and how do I overcome them?

Your personal contribution to a literature review depends on new knowledge gained by evaluating scientific studies. But you can struggle from these difficulties:

What makes a Bachelor's thesis different from Master's and PhD theses? [duplicate]

All the three types of research revolve around an argument, a thesis. They of course differ in terms of student level, that is complexity.

But, what makes a bachelor's thesis different from master's and PhD theses in terms of procedures of researching given that all of them may follow the same process of research, questions or hypotheses, review of the literature, methodology, results and discussion?

  • 1 I see what you meant but I'm not really convinced. Concerning the contribution to human knowledge, I think this depends on whether the thesis is innovative. If an undergraduate thesis is genuine, it can be published in a respectable academic journal. In that case, it would expand existing body of human knowledge. The PhD thesis should be on a much higher level than the Honours/Masters thesis, offering a contribution to human knowledge that is of a sufficient level of "significance" to warrant publication in a respected journal.

Significance is highly subjective, and you also do not necessarily have to publish to be awarded the PhD (sometimes the peer-review delay means that they come out afterwards, or there may be some intellectual property issues that make it beneficial to refrain from publication). It is awarded based on your supervisors consent and a review of academics in your field. So the "significance" would probably be judged by them in terms of how much original work they see as a reasonable expectation at that stage of your development (first 3 years of serious/committed research). Unfortunately it also means that some people who probably do not deserve PhD's are awarded them anyway for fulfilling grunt work for their easy-going supervisors.

It is possible that some Honours/Masters thesis might even be more significant/higher quality than a PhD thesis. Unfortunately, this does not mean that the submission of the thesis will award the degree that they deserve. The university may have a policy to upgrade the student's enrolment if the supervisor senses that such progress is being made. However, it is impossible to upgrade to a PhD without completing Honours and I believe nearly every single university has a policy of a minimum period of enrolment before submission is allowed. A subsequent question that you may have is how to gain a PhD without enrolling in one, which is another level of achievement completely.

As for the difference between Honours/Bachelor and Masters it would depend on your university, but both have no requirement for publication quality research and are usually small tasks/ideas that are not worth the supervisors time to think about alone, or involve a lot of labor. In fact, in my school, many Honours thesis are of a higher level than the Masters, because the smart Honours students will either graduate into the work force or go straight into a PhD. The Masters students are usually those who cannot find a job and are not suited to research. However, I believe some other universities may require a mandatory Masters degree to start the PhD.

You may get a better idea by looking at some titles/abstracts of completed theses. The PhD level will be something like a new method/observation/application whereas the Masters/Honours will be an application specific set of measurements/simulations or even simply a literature review to gauge the needs of future work. The word limits are also typically different (although note that quality is NOT proportional to the number of words), with PhD at 100K, Masters at 50K and Honours at 30K at my university.

Go back to basic definitions... In history of university degrees (500 years ago)

A bachelors degree is about learning existing knowledge. Historically from the book(s) written by the univ staff.

A masters degree, after you have learnt what is already known and in books in your topic area, is about learning evolving knowledge - that is near recent and current literature in academic journals and conference presentations.

A doctorate degree is about creating new knowledge by research.

So it is now easy to understand a thesis/dissertation for each degree.

A bachelors degree should be a critique of existing knowledge, often looking for inconsistencies in view points from different sources and synthesising arguments or positions in a DISSERTATION )that is you disserting !

A masters thesis (thesis is Greek for 'I believe') can be either an assembly of new knowledge from new published research or simply a critique and integration. It might have propositions (not hypotheses) that the masters student offers as a conclusion from bringing together new knowledge from different sources.

A doctoral thesis is where the author undertakes research, usually collecting primary new data which is presented as both factual findings and conceptual findings and thus new knowledge in the form of a new model or theory. Also possible, is to challenge existing knowledge and show earlier published knowledge is invalid.

Well that's what they all should be. In practice there is some overlap and different universities and faculties have their own custom and practice. It all starts to break down about 40 years ago when a masters degree become post graduate in time rather than post graduate in level. Thus engineers with a bachelor degree might take an MBA to make them more employable and did more a less a bachelor degree in business in 18 months rather than 3 years as they were already a graduate.

But still thinking in the above categories can help students today focus on the overall agenda.

I have examined over 55 PhD theses. And several hundred masters theses and I base my approach to assessment on the above.

  • Your answer is very clear. However, I have come across many Bachelor's and especially Master's theses following the processes of research. personally, I am writing my Bachelor's thesis. I've followed the same of research. Specifically I've used online ethnography, collected data through participant observation and interviews, and trying to analyze data through constant comparative method. My supervisor did not impose this on me, but students have to follow the processes of research, literature review, data collection and analysis and discussion, etc. I really wonder if I am doing it wrong. –  EasternRiver Commented Mar 29, 2014 at 20:51

Roughly speaking, there are three levels of tasks:

  • Application

For a Bachelor's thesis, you would only expect 1 and 2, that is the student should do something (e.g. solve a well-defined problem) with the knowledge they have aquired during their studies.

For Master's thesis, you would want to have a non-trivial amount of 3, that is the student should transfer the competences aquired during studies to new problems. This usually includes (more) extensive literature research.

A formal difference that (imho) derives from the above is volume; Bachelor's theses typically award less credits than Master's theses and should thus take up less time and fewer pages.

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.

You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.

You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.

In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.

The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

  • Why you hold this position
  • What they’ll learn from your essay
  • The key points of your argument or narrative

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

  • In an argumentative essay , your thesis statement should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
  • In an expository essay , you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis statement doesn’t have to include a strong opinion in this case, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make, and mention the key elements you’ll explain.

Bachelor's thesis.

Your Bachelor’s thesis is a “proof of competence” where you showcase your skills in your chosen area of Literary Studies. The Bachelor’s thesis allows you to share the competences and knowledge that you have acquired over the three years of your degree programme. Your thesis is linked to a level 3 course and the paper's contents are relevant to one of the Literary Studies specialisations.

BA thesis application

As you write your bachelor’s thesis, your work will be supervised by a member of the Literary Studies teaching team, who will be appointed by the programme coordinator. Please send the 'BA thesis application' in an email to dr. Müge Özoglu at least four weeks before you want to start. You will then be assigned a supervisor who you should contact promptly. Prior to this, you could of course talk to teachers about thesis supervision.

Planning and procedure

  • Your supervisor monitors the progress of your thesis and evaluates the final result. A second reader is always involved in the assessment.
  • In the fourth week of the block, you must submit a research proposal. Note: this proposal must be approved by both assessors; only after approval by both assessors can you proceed with your plan. If your proposal is assessed as insufficient, you can revise it once, in consultation with the supervisors. If the revision is also assessed as unsatisfactory, your right to further supervision during the block expires. In your research proposal, you must at least cover the following points: (a) a motivated question or objective, (b) a plan of approach (operationalisation, methods), (c) intended final result, (d) time planning, (e) literature list.
  • The final version of the thesis must be handed in to both assessors no later than the last working day of the block in which you are registered for the thesis, or earlier as determined by your supervisor.
  • The assessment of the thesis is done using assessment forms. These can be found under the heading ‘Assessment’.

Handing in your thesis

Once you have completed your thesis, you must submit it in Osiris (and not via an email to your supervisor). Osiris also provides you with evaluation progress as well as your final grade. 

If your supervisor has indicated that your final paper is ready for assessment, proceed as follows:

  • You upload your thesis in Osiris Student  > Cases > My cases > Start a new case by using the plus icon in the bottom right corner.  A new window will open. Make sure your pop-up blocker is turned off for the new window to open. Choose Thesis and graduation > HUM: Thesis evaluation
  • You upload your thesis in  Blackboard  (to check for plagiarism).

Did you get a pass?

If you have received a satisfactory grade, you will need to upload the final version to Utrecht University's thesis archive. This is mandatory.

  • Archive your thesis

Bachelor theses are not published by default.

Forms and procedures Bachelor's thesis

Your Bachelor's thesis will be assessed following specific evaluation procedures. You can prepare for this by reading the following documents and explanations prior to starting your thesis.

All Bachelor's theses are assessed by two lecturers. If your supervisor is one of the lecturers teaching in the Bachelor's programme, then this person will also be the first assessor (or the 'examiner'). Theses are assessed using an assessment form . If there is a large difference of opinion between the first and second assessors, a third assessor may be engaged, who will always work with a separate  assessment form .

Fraud and plagiarism

We take all forms of academic deception very seriously and expect all students to observe the ethical standards of proper academic conduct. When you start writing your thesis, you must submit the Plagiarism awareness declaration form as an acknowledgement that you have read the University's regulations regarding  fraud and plagiarism . Lecturers or supervisors will report any suspected cases of fraud or plagiarism to the Board of Examiners. 

Do you use participants for your research?

In case you are doing research that involves interviewing people, submitting questionnaires or involving people in any other way, you are probably doing human-subject related research . If so, please review the  checklist  and discuss it with your supervisor. The checklist contains information on privacy, ethics and data management.

Bc thesis: language proficiency and cultural studies.

The thesis must be written in English and must contain a brief summary in Czech.

It must have an introduction, a theoretical part, the main body and a conclusion. The introduction must state the aims of the thesis, a basic hypothesis and expected results. The brief theoretical part should put forward relevant ideas found through study of theoretical literature published on the subject. The main body of the thesis should be a presentation, analysis and discussion of facts and opinions published in newspapers, journals, opinion polls, on the Internet, etc. In addition, it is recommended that the author should conduct a brief survey of opinions of students, learners of English, citizens in general, etc. on the basis of self-created questionnaires. The thesis must have a conclusion stating whether the hypothesis has been confirmed, and what results have been obtained and how.

The overall form should be a long academic essay that should follow the principles learned in the Academic Writing classes that are part of the department’s curriculum.

It should have a minimum of 40 standard pages (72 000 symbols) and a list of cited sources (using the MLA citation rules) and excluding appendices.

Any attempt at plagiarizing will disqualify the thesis and will lead to its non-acceptance.

The thesis is submitted only electronically unless the supervisor or the opponent request a printed copy.

Students are strongly encouraged to come up with their own ideas for the thesis’ topic. Sample topics:

  • Choose an area of culture in which you think Czech and British society differs significantly, and discuss the difference.
  • In what ways is the English language changing the world?
  • How have newer communication technologies (the Internet, cellular phones, ICQ, etc.) influenced communication and language?
  • What, and how, do people read in the 21st century?
  • The impact of English on today’s Czech.

Bc Thesis: Literary Studies

The Literary Studies Bachelor’s thesis should focus on an interpretation of one, or at the most two novels or plays (if the candidate wishes to choose short fiction or poetry, the chosen work or works is/are to be discussed with the supervisor).

The thesis must be written in English and must contain a brief summary in Czech. It must have an introduction, a theoretical part, the main body and a conclusion.

The introduction must state the aims of the thesis. A brief theoretical part should put forward relevant ideas found through the study of theoretical literature published on the subject. It should also give a brief outline of the context in which the text under discussion was produced. Autobiographical data should be mentioned only where relevant for the interpretation. The main body of the thesis should be a critical analysis and therefore, a retelling of the plot of the novel or play should be given only if relevant to the interpretation under question.

The overall form should be a long academic essay that should follow the principles learned in the Academic Writing classes and British and American Literature classes that are part of the department’s curriculum.

  • Using two novels by two different writers (Orwell, Burgess, McEwan, Martin Amis and others) analyze and discuss the development of dystopia as a theme in post-WWII British literature.
  • Analyze and discuss the narrative techniques and strategies in one or two novels by a contemporary British author (Rushdie, Ishiguro, McEwan, Martin Amis, Barnes, Byatt, Swift, Winterson, Smith)
  • Discuss the quest for identity in one or two novels by a contemporary British hyphenated writer (Naipaul, Kureishi, Smith, Ali, Caryl Phillips, Syal, Howard Jacobson, Alderman and others.)
  • Taboo topics in Kate Chopin’s short stories.
  • Crime and punishment in Native Son by Richard Wright.

Bc Thesis: Translation

Translation and stylistic analysis  Part 1: The student translates 15 – 30 standard pages of short fiction, poetry, drama or philosophy written by one author. The text should not span more than one genre and must be written in complex and idiomatic English, ideally with direct speech and dialect. The output format is a side-by-side English-Czech translation. The source text must be an original English piece of writing which has not been officially translated into Czech by the time the topic is assigned (according to generally available information), or which has been translated by the author of the prospective BA thesis himself/herself.

Part 2: Approx. 10 – 25 standard pages will be devoted to a stylistic analysis of the text and/or authorial comment which rests primarily on the theoretical framework (see Theory) and which clarifies or justifies e.g. the choice of language register (possibly colloquial), the Czech idiom used in the target translation, etc.

A juxtaposition of two or more Czech translations Alternatively, students might also choose to write a thesis which seeks to compare and contrast two or more Czech translations of a book written in English. The juxtaposed translations should have been published at least 15 years apart (see the last sample topic) so that the thesis might also explore the shift in Czech vernacular and other cultural considerations. The thesis must not exceed 35 standard pages, excluding bibliography. Direct quotes from the English original and Czech translations should constitute less than 20 per cent of the text.

Students are strongly encouraged to come up with their own ideas for the thesis’ topic.

The thesis needs a brief theoretical framework. This will draw primarily (though not exclusively) on the following publications: Levý, J. (1958): Úvod do teorie překladu, Praha, Panorama. Mounin, G. (1992): Teoretické problémy překladu, Praha, Karolinum – nakladatelství UK Sample topics:

Bc. Thesis: English Linguistics

This thesis should have a minimum of 40 standard pages (72 000 symbols), including the title page, table of contents, key words, abstract, introduction, conclusion, footnotes/endnotes, reference to primary and secondary sources, a Czech summary, etc. It should embody original research carried out by the author (with reasonable guidance provided by the supervisor) and should be based on careful scrutiny of authentic data. It must be stressed that compilations of various secondary sources alone do not constitute the thesis and will not be accepted. The results of the original research should be adequately presented and thoroughly interpreted, and, most importantly, convincing conclusions should be drawn from the research.

The thesis will be written in English. Its formulation should be clear, succinct and coherent, adhering to all conventions common in academic writing (for this thesis – the MLA citation style will be used).

Due in part to diverging disciplinary traditions, the Bachelor Thesis module is organized rather differently in Literature and in Linguistics. However, the overall workload expected from students remains the same (15 ECTS), as do the overall learning outcomes and the required level of quality.

Note: It is strongly recommended – though not absolutely mandatory– that students choose a project that is based on a course they have attended (e.g. a Bachelor Seminar in Literature or Linguistics).

Students should have successfully written a seminar paper in the field (i.e. literature or linguistics) in which they are planning to conduct the Bachelor Thesis research and have successfully completed "Writing Skills and Media Analysis.”

The Bachelor Thesis concludes a largely independent research project in the field of either Literature or Linguistics. Students are able to: (a) draft, plan, and conduct a largely independent research project; (b) solicit appropriate feedback; (c) present their own research in C1-level academic prose.

, there will be a colloquium in which supplementary supervision and peer review of the research and planning process will be offered, in addition to the contact between the student and the respective supervisor.

, the supervision will be conducted on an individual basis, with students approaching their supervisor for consultation hours and advice concerning the thesis (i.e. there is no formal accompanying Kolloquium in Literature).

The Bachelor Thesis shows evidence of the ability to work independently on an academic project of a suitable level within the stipulated time limit, and to present this appropriately.
