Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, how should i describe a life event in my essay that prepared me for college.

So I'm drafting my college essay and I've got this life event that really impacted me and I think it shows I'm ready for college. But how do I describe it in a way that's compelling and not just telling a story? Any advice from those who tackled something similar?

When you're describing a life event in your college essay, it's important to focus on reflection, rather than merely recounting the event. Think about how this experience has shaped your perspective, influenced your goals, or contributed to your character development.

Start by setting the scene to engage the reader, then swiftly move to express how this event was pivotal in your personal growth. Show rather than tell; for example, if you're writing about how you overcame a challenge, detail the steps you took and the resourcefulness or resilience you displayed with active descriptions and action rather than a passive explanation. You want to make it clear why this event makes you a strong candidate for college by connecting it to attributes like determination, leadership, or a passion for learning. Remember to close your essay by looking forward; explain how the event has prepared you for the challenges of college and beyond, and how it will inform your contributions to the college community.

The dawn of a new perspective.

Every life is punctuated by significant, transformative moments. For me, one such day stands out, etched in my memory with vivid clarity. The day I volunteered at a local homeless shelter, an experience that profoundly altered my perspective towards life.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

As a college student, my life was a cocoon of comfort and privilege. I was largely oblivious to the harsh realities that many people face daily. The day I stepped into the homeless shelter, I was stepping out of my comfort zone. The sight of people grappling with poverty and homelessness was a stark contrast to my sheltered existence.

The Power of Empathy

Interacting with the shelter residents, I realized that they were not just faceless statistics but individuals with dreams, aspirations, and stories. I met a woman who was an artist, a man who used to be a teacher, and a young boy with ambitions to become a scientist. Their resilience in the face of adversity was both humbling and inspiring. It taught me the power of empathy and the importance of kindness.

Transformative Experience

That day, I returned home with a heavy heart but a clear mind. I realized that my education was not just about acquiring knowledge but also about applying it to make a difference in society. I felt a newfound sense of responsibility and purpose.

In conclusion, that memorable day at the homeless shelter was a turning point in my life. It challenged my perceptions, broadened my worldview, and instilled a deep sense of empathy and social responsibility in me. Life is not just about personal achievements but also about contributing to the betterment of others.

500 Words Essay on A Memorable Day in My Life

Everyone has moments that are unforgettable and influential during their life. These moments may be far from our daily routine and give us a lasting impression. One such day that I can recall, filled with joy and happiness, was when I graduated from college.

The Anticipation

The day started with a mixture of fear and excitement. I woke up early, my heart pounding with anticipation. The day I had worked so hard for was finally here. I had spent countless sleepless nights studying, preparing, and dreaming about this day. The fear was not about the ceremony or the pomp that comes with graduation, but the uncertainty of what lay ahead. The excitement, on the other hand, was about the achievement I had made and the celebration that was to come.

The Graduation Ceremony

The graduation ceremony was a grand event. As I walked onto the stage in my cap and gown, I could hear the cheers from my family and friends. The moment was surreal. As I received my diploma, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. I could see the pride in my parents’ eyes, and at that moment, I realized the magnitude of my achievement. It was not just about getting a degree; it was about the hard work, the sacrifices, and the perseverance that had led me to this point.

Reflections and Realizations

After the ceremony, I had a moment to myself. I sat alone, reflecting on my journey. I thought about the challenges I had faced, the friendships I had made, and the lessons I had learned. I realized that college was not just about academics. It was about personal growth, about learning to navigate life, about becoming a better version of oneself. I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had, and for the people who had supported me throughout my journey.

The Celebration

The day ended with a grand celebration. My family, friends, and I gathered to celebrate my achievement. There was laughter, joy, and a sense of camaraderie. We shared stories, reminisced about the past, and talked about the future. The celebration was not just about my graduation, but about the journey I had undertaken, and the person I had become. It was a celebration of growth, of learning, and of achievement.

That memorable day was a turning point in my life. It marked the end of one journey and the beginning of another. It was a day of joy and celebration, but also a day of reflection and gratitude. It was a day that reminded me of my potential, and of the endless possibilities that lay ahead. It was, indeed, a memorable day in my life.

Memorable Day of My Life: 120 Words

Last month, our school arranged a trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The beauty of the Taj Mahal seemed to have no parallel.  It is made of white marble on the bank of the river Yamuna. The garden in front of it has tall cypress trees, colourful flowers, and rows of mountains. Many precious gems and stones are seen set on the tomb.

I found in the Taj Mahal the artistic and cultural heritage of India. Every stone of this building tells the story of the true love of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. The white marble structure unrolled before me a new world of beauty. It is, indeed, matchless in beauty and grandeur. That’s why it is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. I was greatly charmed by its beauty. I felt breathless for a white. It was undoubtedly the most memorable day of my life.

A memorable incident is an incident which leaves an everlasting impression on our minds. The most memorable incident of my life is when I got an opportunity to exhibit my talent on stage in front of a huge audience. I always dreamt of becoming a singer. As a kid, I used my toothbrush as the mike and treated my dolls as my audience.

I was enrolled in a vocal training course in an eminent singer’s singing class and from there, based on my performance I was selected to display my skills at the Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Initially, I was a bit nervous, but got over it soon when I heard the tune. My performance was well received and the audience acclaimed me with their applauds and kept yelling “once more”. The incident made me feel on top of the world.

A moment which is sweet lasts long in our memory. I distinctly remember the day. My H. S. examination was over and I was having a relaxed time. One day, after spending the afternoon with my friends, I returned home.

My parents were waiting for me. Sister also came running. She was carrying a big envelope in her hand. They all seemed to be very excited and their faces bore reflections of animated joy. My sister shouted that there was a good news for me in the envelope and she would not tell unless she got a heavy bakshis.

After much cajoling, I could get the letter. Lo and behold! It was the admission letter from the I.I.T, Kharagpur. My joy then knew no bounds, I did quite well in the joint entrance examination. But to get selected finally in the highly competitive all-India test was something none could be sure of. In fact, I was a little tense to know the result.

Parents blessed me for my success. Neighbours also came. They all congratulated me again and again. I was lost in golden dreams. At last, I was going to join an institution of international fame! It was the happiest and most memorable day in my life because my future career got a definite direction that day. But that happy day taught me a lesson, too. I made up my mind to work hard in order to be successful in my career.

The topic seeks an account of a memorable day in my life. While there are several red-letter days in my life to date (I consider myself fortunate enough for the same), I will choose the day I got my first offer letter. I was fresh out of college (I had completed my four-year engineering program with distinction) and was allowed to apply for placements. I was clear that I would work for a few years and save up for a good master’s program abroad. Hence, I eagerly participated in placements, managing to get through the initial rounds at two leading multinational companies.

Eventually, I got an offer letter from one of these companies. Imagine my surprise and happiness when I was placed in my home city with a decent compensation package. I got this offer letter while in college, where I had gone for the final round of placements. I was too excited to convey my news on the phone to my parents. This was the day I had pictured for a long time; I had dreamed of getting a job and then treating my parents to some of the finer things in life (that they sacrificed to bring me up). I called our local Chinese restaurant and asked them to deliver food at our address immediately.

I took a cab and reached home just in time as the food arrived. My surprised parents were very emotional when I handed them my offer letter. We all took a moment and then started dancing together. It was one of the most beautiful days in my life.

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

One of the most memorable days in my life was when I won the inter-college cricket tournament with my teammates. Being a crunch match, the entire college had turned up, and it was held at our home ground. My parents and younger sister had also arrived to support me. We were nervous initially, even though we knew we had played well throughout the tournament. I was on a temperamental streak; out of five matches so far, I had played well in two of them, getting a couple of 30s under my belt. However, I had failed in the rest. I was determined to leave my mark on the proceedings in the prestigious inter-college final.

The opponents won the toss and opted to bat first. They made mincemeat of our bowlers from the word go, amassing a massive score of 181 in 20 overs. I had taken a catch at point but that was my only contribution in the game till then. The butterflies were jumping in my stomach when I opened the batting with my partner Naveen. However, I remembered the advice of my coach-  You will see the ball like a football if you cut out everything else . These words came back to me. I was a changed batsman.

Looking back at the game, I wonder how I managed to score a quick-fire 58 runs off just 20 balls in the final, especially after having failed in the previous two games. I hit five sixes in my knock. When I got out, I had given my team a good start, one that they maintained to romp home in 19 overs. The Man of the Match award was the icing on the cake. I was a hero in college. It was a memorable day in my life.

Great Examples to Describe Important Life Events

Table of Contents

There may be times when you’ll be asked to  describe a significant event in your life . It could be for a school writing assignment or a college application essay. But some life moments can be so precious and overwhelming that it’s difficult to put them into words. If you find yourself stuck on what to write, don’t worry. This article is here to help you out.

Today we’ll share some tips with you on how to describe important life experiences. We’ll also review some great examples that you can refer to. Let’s get into it!

What Life Events Can You Talk About?

There are so many life-changing moments that you can talk about in your essay. If you haven’t been given a topic, here are some event examples you can consider discussing:

  • Your first day at work
  • An event that you love celebrating (e.g., a birthday, Independence Day, Christmas, an anniversary)
  • The day you met the love of your life.
  • A happy or memorable family event. (Wedding of a sibling, death of a family member, family birthday party, parents’ wedding anniversary, buying a house)
  • The time you had an intense argument with a person
  • A fight you had with a close friend
  • The day of your graduation from high school or college.
  • A memorable childhood event (e.g., a special birthday, starting school, moving home, a special trip, the birth of a sibling)
  • When your first child was born

A set of old photographs of road trips and cute dog pets.

How Do You Describe a Significant Event in Your Life?

Answer the 5ws (what, who, when, where, why).

Before you start telling your story, it’s essential to get your facts in order. In order to do that, it can be helpful to answer the 5Ws:

  • What happened?
  • Who were the people involved?
  • When did it happen?
  • Where did it occur?
  • Why was the event special?

By answering these questions, you can better organize your thoughts and structure the narrative you want to tell in your essay or text.

Get into the details.

Describing an event is all about going into the details. You want to help readers to visualize it as clearly as possible . Do your best to remember details like what the place looked like, the weather, what people were wearing, the atmosphere, and so on.

Choose the right descriptive words.

Words can go a long way to evoke emotions that can lead to memories. Do your best to choose appropriate and powerful words to describe events in your content.

Use an online writing tool.

If you’re still stuck on how to describe your topic, you can always get the help of online writing tools. The INK Event Description Generator is one of the best tools you can use to provide vivid and well-thought-out descriptions. It’s powered by AI technology, and it can generate text for you in a matter of seconds. There’s even an option for you to pick the tone of writing. You should definitely give it a try!

Example 1: When I Got Into My Dream University

I still remember it like it was yesterday. My nerves were all over the place, my hands were sweating, and I felt my heart beating so fast. It was Friday, and the college admission results were scheduled to be posted. My sister and I sat on the sofa, constantly refreshing the web page. She kept encouraging me every second, smiling with love on her face. My anxiety was not calming down any time soon.

Finally, my name popped on the page. A feeling of relief and tremendous joy washed over me. We were jumping up and down the coach, screaming like little girls. It was a life-changing moment I will never forget. That was the day I got one step close to my dreams and studying the course I wanted.

Example 2: Wedding of My Little Sister

It was three years ago when I saw my little sister walking down the aisle. The church was filled with daisies, her favorite flower. My mom sat beside me, and she couldn’t stop crying.

The church doors opened, and she walked through wearing the most beautiful white dress with a trail as long as the day. I couldn’t help but shed a river of tears when I saw her walk in. My little sister has always been my best friend, my partner in crime. And seeing her all grown up and ready to start her own family made my heart melt. I felt joyful and sad at the same time. But I knew she was embarking on her new journey, and my only wish was that she lived a long and happy life.

Example 3: A camping trip with the family

My family and I first began going on camping trips when I was five years old. We would usually do it over the summer. My favorite part about camping was building a fire and roasting marshmallows. My dad once made french fries on the fire in a frying pan. It was so cool! I remember the feeling of being surrounded by my family and the smell of roasting hot fries on the fire. Every night before bed, I would lie awake and stare up at the stars. Those were simpler times. Now I’m 21, and I miss those days so much. I would often come to our old camping spot just to reminisce. I will forever hold those fun camping memories close to my heart.

To describe a significant event in your life, you need to take a trip down memory lane. Think about as many details as you can about a particular memory. It needs to be descriptive and interesting . This is no easy feat, so take your time and think of that moment in detail.

The Best Day of My Life Essay

The best day of my life is my 16th birthday. It is a day I will never forget in my life. I consider it till now my best birthday. All my relatives and friends were present at my birthday party. The best part of the party was my grandmother was present there. For the last time, she prepared all the food items I loved eating. It is even more special as it was the last day that I spent with her, after which she passed away. I spent the most time with her and she also enjoyed herself a lot with me for the last time in her life. This birthday is even more special as it was my last birthday with my grandmother.

The best day of my life was when I went on a school outing with my friends. We ate delicious food and enjoyed the day to the fullest.

I woke up at 6 am and got ready for school. My mother dropped me to school. From there we went to a science park by bus. During the entire journey we danced, sang, played games, and did many more fun activities. We ate snacks and played games with our teacher also. When we arrived we visited the science city and enjoyed every bit of it.

Besides the science park, it was a water park, so we quickly changed our clothes and jumped into the pool. We enjoyed ourselves in the pool, and we kept on playing for an hour. After that, we took a bath and changed clothes. We had rice and chicken for our lunch. We loved the food. After the food, we returned by bus. During the whole bus journey, we sang and danced.

This day is memorable as I could spend it with my friends. The day was a day to be remembered. We had so much fun together. Everything is worth remembering from the beginning to the end of the journey.

Life is full of events - both good and bad. Some things will be forgotten over time, and some will stay in your heart forever. Life is full of surprises and shocks, good and bad news, and unexpected turns. Fortune can benefit some people in life, and help them to reach the pinnacle of glory and happiness.

The Best Day of My Life

Recently I received the best gift from my dad. Since childhood, I always wanted a dog, and recently he had brought me one. I was studying in my room, dad entered my room with a labrador in his hands. I jumped from my bed with happiness. I also started crying as I could not believe my eyes. My mom and dad were always against having a dog. But he brought it, and made it the best day of my life.

Significance of My Best Day

I still remember myself bursting into tears and happiness at the same time. That night I held Bruno the whole time. The next moment I saw myself buying stuff for the dog. I bought food, clothes, toys, and many more things which would make him happy. That night I held him tight and slept beside him. I could not sleep the whole night due to the excitement.

I looked at him throughout the entire night with utmost happiness and surprise. That day was the best day of my life as I got my best friend. A best friend who would never leave me. A best friend who will always be there for me whenever I need him.A best friend who will make me the happiest. A friend who will love me to the fullest. That dog gave me the ultimate happiness and, this is how the day became the best day of my life. I named the dog Bruno.

I am always looking for him whenever I come back from school. He always jumps, licks me, and wags his tail after seeing me. My friends come along with me to play with him. Bruno also became their friend.

What I Love about My Dog

The thing that I love about Bruno the most is that he can gel well with people. My sister was not that comfortable with dogs. But Bruno made her fall in love with him. They are now the best of friends. He would jump in happiness whenever he saw him. She would also run toward him and would pick him up. She feeds him food and always brings toys and treats for him. She loves her to the fullest and, at the same time he loves her to the fullest. This is how Bruno became everyone's favourite.

Every person has some happy days and some bad days in their life. Both help people learn different things from these different experiences. But the happy days are worth remembering. They help you cheer on your days of sadness and bring back all the memories that are worth cherishing. The best day has a great impact on our life.

After a moment, a clever lady walked into the compartment and sat next to me. She had an ingenious scheme to rob me. She told me she would report to the railway police that I had robbed her if I did not hand over all the money I had to her. I was totally and utterly perplexed when I heard this horrible voice. I made a plan to save myself from that lady’s wicked plan. Therefore, I pretended to be a deaf and a dumb fellow and asked her to write what she wanted to say on a piece of paper. She wrote her request happily on the piece of paper and handed it over to me. I changed my seat to pick up a piece of writing. The railway policeman came and asked what the matter was. As smart as she was, the women burst into admissions, so she said I had robbed her of a thousand rupees. Memorable Day In My School Life

A memorable day in my life Life is full of various events and experiences. But all of these are not equally important, enjoyable and memorable. Some are memorable. I am a student. There are some memorable days and they remain evergreen in my heart. My first day at school is such a day. It was the month of January, 2007. I was then only six years old. My father proposed that I should be admitted into a school in class one the next day.

I felt very excited. I could not think of anything else.

I was always thinking about the school, the teachers as I watched on the TV. I could not even sleep well that night. The next morning my mother woke me early in the morning. She washed me very well, combed my hair and dressed in new clothes. Then I had breakfast and started for the school with my father. He took me to the nearest NHF Primary School of our locality at 9.

30 am. The school was not very far from our home. So we walk all the way. It took us half an hour to reach the school.

“ Ok, let me say I’m extremely satisfy with the result while it was a last minute thing. I really enjoy the effort put in. ”

At first I felt a bit nervous and shy. But his smiling face and gentle eyes put me at ease. He asked me my name and I answered him. Then he pointed me a letter chart and asked me to say some letters.

I could say them all because my mother taught me them at home. Then he became very pleased with me and admitted me in class one. Then he called Ms Fatema, the class teacher of class one to take me to the class. She welcomed me and took me to the class and gave me a seat. All the students in the class were staring at me. I felt a bit nervous once again to see the new faces. But soon I became very easy. The class lasted 35 minutes I had four other periods with a break of 30 minutes. I found that all my teachers were careful, friendly and helpful.

At the leisure period all of my classmates started playing in the field. I felt very lonely and was loitering here and there. Then they invited me to join them. I started playing. I felt myself like a free bird flying in the open sky. My school broke up at 12 pm. My mother was at the gate to receive me. I leapt into her arms. She kissed me and caught me at her arms. Thus I finished my first day at school. I left the school at with new experience and cheerful mind. I shall never forget the day as long as I live.

Memorable Day In My School Life

Dear Abby: I'm afraid husband will blow up or bawl when I tell him I want out

Woman is so uncomfortable with mate that she secretly has rented another apartment and visits family to feel peace..

dear-abby-12880069-e1420416724734-524.jpg

DEAR ABBY: I have been deceiving my husband for a couple of months and can’t figure out how to come clean. I feel like a terrible person. We have been married 17 years, and during the first four or five we were happy. We don’t have very many disagreements, but when we do, he always wins. This is because he’s intense, intelligent and very intimidating, so I always back down.

I am so uncomfortable with him and careful about what I say that it has started to make me depressed and anxious. I’m in therapy and trying hard to speak up for myself.

The deception I speak of is that I have rented an apartment in another town and have lied to him about trips to see my sister, my daughter and my mother just so I can feel some peace, read a book, knit, and just ... be. He has no idea because our finances are separate (his choice).

I’m afraid to tell my husband I want to leave him because a few years ago I expressed how unhappy I was and said I didn’t recognize this small, scared version of myself. He went from frighteningly furious to crying and begging me to stay. I felt so guilty that I stayed. He knows I’m unhappy. He even knows his quiet, underlying rage scares me. His pitiful begging me to stay makes me feel like a bad person.

I feel so much better when I’m away from him, but I’m terrified about how he’ll react when I say I want to leave for good. I know that when I do gather the courage, I’ll likely lose everything we have together. Please advise me. — FACING THE TRUTH

DEAR FACING: The time to talk to an attorney is now, well in advance of taking any action. Doing so will help you to determine exactly what kind of financial hit you may suffer if you follow through with your plan to leave. Since your finances are separate, it may not be as bad as you fear.

Because you are fearful for your safety, you should also contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 ( thehotline.org ). The folks there can help you to formulate a safe escape plan.

DEAR ABBY: My significant other loves to play video games. I believe he has become addicted. I don’t know how to tell him enough is enough. I would love to be heard and noticed by him, but he is too infatuated with his video games. I have even participated in his hobby with him. Am I the “bad guy” for wanting quality time? What can I do? — LOSING THE GAME IN MARYLAND

DEAR LOSING: There is nothing wrong with playing video games — unless it becomes an obsession. Tell your significant other that if he wants your relationship to continue, he is going to have to devote more time to it. Tell him you no longer feel you are noticed or heard, and that it is hurtful. How he reacts will tell you all you need to know about whether your romance can be saved.

Taylor swift needs to become other people.

An illustration that includes a photo of Taylor Swift performing, with the image duplicated to suggest several Taylor Swifts doing the same thing at the same time.

By Ross Douthat

Opinion Columnist

The biggest cultural news of the month is that a lot of people are kind of “meh” about Taylor Swift’s latest album (or albums, if you prefer to treat the 31-song release as a twofer). After spending the past few years illustrating how internet-era culture encourages a singular kind of superstardom, to the point where Swift has sometimes felt like the only celebrity singer in the world — or maybe that’s just how it feels when you’re driving a minivan with tween-age daughters making song requests — we’ve maybe, maybe finally hit a point of overextension and oversaturation.

Two takes on this interested me. One is from Damon Linker, who argues that Swift badly needs an editor and that her art is suffering because nobody is manufacturing scarcity, forcing her to kill her darlings and otherwise imposing what the limits of vinyl LP technology used to impose on singer-songwriters — namely, a requirement of curation:

If a band records 20 songs for a project, but only has room for 12 on the final album, decisions need to be made. Which are the 12 best songs — not just in absolute terms, but in terms of the whole (the album) being constructed out of the parts (the songs)? What kind of statement are the artists trying to make? What kind of sound and mood do they want to become immortalized at this moment in their career? Which of these songs do they want to play live dozens of times on their upcoming concert tour? Which song would make for the best opening track, and which the best closer? And how about pacing? How many upbeat tunes, how many ballads, and in which order?

Linker goes on to suggest that this process helps define an artist’s aesthetic, forcing them toward their greatest strengths and their most original material. For this reason, someone like Bruce Springsteen, who recorded many more songs than appeared on his most famous albums, might have been a weaker cultural presence — or so Linker argues — if he had just dumped every song he ever wrote in the laps of his most eager fans. The best work would have been lost inside the pretty good work, and the sense of Springsteen as a very specific kind of rock music legend might have been diminished.

For a very different analysis of Swift, consider these comments on X from Katherine Boyle, an Andreessen Horowitz venture capitalist, repurposing a take she offered in 2023. In our cultural environment, Boyle argues, being prolific is everything: “You can’t cede ground to competitors. You have to keep producing, keep sending a constant wave of stuff, that again, follows a consistent formula which helps your fans anticipate when it’s coming.”

So the fact that Swift constantly “ships” is a feature, not a bug: “A continuous stream of shipping must be maintained,” Boyle says. You can’t worry about having your best material lost in the churn, because the “most successful people in competitive industries win by taking more shots, not fewer. If Taylor writes 31 songs and 3 are memorable, she’s written three epic songs. No one remembers the bad ones, even if there’s more of them on a double album.”

These arguments seem diametrically opposed, but one could synthesize them by saying that Linker could be more correct about art (the requirements of curation might yield a more refined oeuvre) and Boyle could be more correct about commerce (the requirements of the media environment don’t allow the luxury of holding potential hits and bangers back).

Supposing that to be true, what should superstars do when they follow Boyle’s advice and people — well, some people at least, if not the truest fans — suddenly claim to feel exhausted? Or more specifically, what should Swift do if she feels like she needs to ship but the shipping hits a saturation point?

I feel vaguely qualified to address this since I’m not a passionate Swiftie, but I am someone who has been required to listen to almost all of her music, many times over, and taken pleasure from it even though it isn’t always my first choice. Which means I’m the kind of listener who’s most likely to feel the oversaturation first — and I’m inclined to agree with the provisional consensus that the new album underwhelms.

My prescription is that if Swift is going to be this prolific, she needs more leaven in her content. The core of her brand will always be the personal drama of Being Taylor Swift, but that story’s cycle of infatuation, love, rapture, disappointment, pain, revenge has hit a limit of interest in her current work.

One escape from this limit is, of course, to change the story by marrying Travis Kelce and inspiring a new American baby boom. But pending that happy possibility, another way to escape a personal cul-de-sac as an artist is to ship fewer stories about her own ’shipping (if you will) and tell more stories about other people — or more subtly, to expand what Being Taylor Swift means musically to encompass more lives besides her own.

This was of course always the basis of Springsteen’s success — the fact that his music wasn’t dependent on real events in the life of Bruce Springsteen, and instead he inhabited a wide range of characters who were recognizably connected to his brand as a blue-collar balladeer.

Swift’s brand is different and much more authentically autobiographical than The Boss’s; the idea that she’s telling stories about her real self has always been crucial to her appeal. But she has already shown that she can play Swift-adjacent characters in her music, in a way that might be expanded and serve her better than another round of relationship-and-breakup songs.

Here are three examples. “The Lucky One,” from the original cut of the album “Red,” is an autobiographical song in one sense — Swift is singing from a version of her own perspective, as a star disillusioned with the way the culture uses and discards female celebrities. But the core of the song is someone else’s story, a legend in which a famous singer ditches the celebrity life at the height of her fame.

I always assumed that the song was about Bobbie Gentry, a country star who deliberately disappeared from the music industry more than 40 years ago, but the internet suggests other candidates, including Joni Mitchell and Kim Wilde. In any case, it’s a good song, a favorite in our minivan, in which a biography other than Swift’s takes center stage.

Likewise with “The Last Great American Dynasty,” one of my favorites from the pandemic album “Folklore.” Here again there is a personal framing device, since Swift is singing about Rebekah Harkness, a prior owner of the beach house she bought in Rhode Island. But the I-Taylor Swift part of the song is a frame for a more traditional ballad, telling a life story quite different (the claimed affinities notwithstanding) from her own.

Finally, “Ronan,” a song on the second version of “Red,” about a child dying of cancer, told from the perspective of the mother. Not a great song, maybe, but a very good, genuinely moving one, its story is drawn from a personal blog kept by Maya Thompson, whose son Ronan died of a neuroblastoma just before his fourth birthday, in 2011. Swift in most of her music does sadness but she doesn’t do grief, and here she’s imagining herself into a life more distant from her own, in a way that reaches emotional registers that you just can’t hit in songs about breaking up with Matty Healy.

So far in my listening, the song on the new album that seems closet to this becoming-other-people model is “The Bolter,” which may be loosely based on the life of Idina Sackville, an Edwardian-era socialite who earned the nickname in the song’s title for her several marriages.

Is it a good song, too? Does my theory hold? Ask me when my daughters have made me listen to it a few hundred more times.
