Location : The ANU is situated in Canberra, Australia’s capital city. Canberra is a well-resourced regional city, set amongst beautiful mountains and surrounded by eucalypt forests. Bike riding and hiking are everyday activities, and we are a two-hour drive away from both winter snowfields and some of the most beautiful beaches on Earth. Canberra’s birdlife is stunning, and we regularly have to brake for kangaroos on our daily commute. Despite its regional setting, Canberra is a vibrant, multicultural city. There are frequent cultural evenings, festivals, art exhibits, music events, and world-class restaurant and coffee scenes.

The Australian National University: We are a research-intensive university and have an international reputation for research excellence. The ANU is frequently ranked as Australia’s top university, and one of the top 50 universities in the world.

Candidates : Fully funded International PhD scholarships are highly competitive at the ANU. To be a viable candidate you need: (1) excellent undergraduate marks; (2) a Masters by Research with a high mark; or an equivalent Honours thesis; or (rarely) equivalent proof of research experience. (3) While not essential, having published research papers in the past is an advantage.

What do I do? First, contact potential supervisors from the list of staff on the Research Groups above (include your CV and grades, and some details about what it is that attracts you to their field of research). If they are interested in supervising you, you can submit an application to commence a PhD via the online link below. Your application should include a detailed CV, full academic transcripts, the name of your potential supervisor, and a brief description of a research project that you and your potential supervisor have discussed. Entry to the PhD program is open to applicants with a Bachelor degree that have also completed (or are in the process of completing) an Honours or Masters research (as opposed to coursework) degree that comprises at least a half year, full time research component and a thesis (5,000-10,000 words). Applicants with significant research experience and publications may be deemed eligible if their achievements can be justified as equivalent to completing an Honours/Masters degree. As part of your application for undertaking a PhD, you will automatically be considered for a stipend scholarship if you tick the scholarship box in the application. You should know that stipend scholarships for international students are very competitive. Your potential supervisor or the Biomedical Science and Biochemistry graduate convenor, Dr Giel van Dooren, can advise you on how competitive your application is likely to be for obtaining a stipend scholarship. The application form is here , along with general information on how to apply and the details about the Doctor of Philosophy program . But read on now as you need to plan ahead in case you are shortlisted. In brief, your PhD application, due by 15 April (for the mid year round) or 31 August,  requires:

• Academic transcripts and graduation/completion certificates from your Bachelor and Honours/MSc degree (in its original language and, if needed, a translation), with grading scale information.
• A current CV, including scholarships or prizes, publications and conference presentations.
• A research proposal (this is quite short and your potential supervisor can help you with it).
• Proficiency in English: For students from many countries, a current IELTS or TOEFL certificate is required. Note: You can state this is pending. If awarded a scholarship you must then pass the test.
• Three referee reports. You need to enter your referee details on the application form. The system then automatically sends them a link to complete an online form. NB: You need to ensure your referees are willing and able to write recommendation letters and do so promptly. Plan ahead and alert them.

UQ Graduate School Scholarship (UQGSS)

The UQ Graduate School Scholarship is the most common scholarship applied for when planning to undertake a Phd. Most PhD's at UQ are funded via the UQ Graduate School Scholarship. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, please visit the UQ Graduate School .

*Please note, currently the UQ Graduate School Scholarship is only available to Domestic candidates. International applicants are still elligible for Earmarked PhD projects (and accompanying Earmarked Scholarship).

IMB Global Challenges Scholarship

The Global Challenges PhD Scholarship offers a per annum top up to the UQ Graduate School Scholarship plus $5,000 support for a placement on top of the $2,000 Student Development fund (over the period of the candidature) to outstanding domestic and eligible international onshore applicants .

The PhD projects on offer will give each student the opportunity to take a deep dive into a specialised topic and research discipline in one laboratory and within our broad-ranging approach. Each project will provide the rich foundational research training gained by completing a PhD and an opportunity to make a unique contribution to the field of knowledge. By conducting these projects within a cohort of other students, also aiming to broadly address the identified themes, the collective will form an intellectual hub, together, solving these global challenges. 

Importantly, the scholarship includes specialised training in each theme and cutting-edge research techniques, tailored transferable skills training and support to conduct a placement nationally or internationally with a related partner. Collectively, these will form four pillars of support for the research project and create job-ready graduates with links to the national and international research, entrepreneurial and industry community. This year's theme is 'Drugs inspired by nature' .

To qualify for a Global Challenges Scholarship, you must

• Apply for a participating  PhD Projec t   (marked with an asterisk).
• Submit your PhD application before the deadline (check back for 2024 deadline)

In your application, ensure you:

• Select ‘My higher degree is not collaborative’
• Select 'I am applying for, or have been awarded a scholarship or sponsorship'.
• Select ‘Other’, then add ‘ IMB Global Challenges + identified theme’

Please note, there are conditions for undertaking this scholarship. Refer to details below.

Scholarship conditions

If awarded the Global Challenges Scholarship, there are a few conditions that must be met in order to receive funding. These include:

• Conducting a cross-disciplinary project that is targeted at solving a global problem within one of the themes of – Drug Discovery, Chronic Disease, Superbug Solutions and Population and Disease Genomics. All projects that qualify for the Global Challenges Scholarship are marked with an asterisk.
• Conducting a project that is multidisciplinary, with an advisory group that is composed of at least one Associate advisor in a different IMB Centre (or UQ institute/school) to the principal advisor
• Conducting a placement with an external partner - arranged by you in collaboration with The University of Queensland Graduate School within the first 18 months of commencement, the placement can take place at any time during the candidature but is normally undertaken towards the end of the PhD. The extension of your candidature period from 3.5 years to 4 years is conditional on undertaking a placement.
• Being an IMB ambassador - both to promote the scholarship and IMB generally.
• Being an active participant in SIMBA and mentoring junior scholarship holders

Earmarked Scholarships

Earmarked scholarships are offered for research projects aligned with recently awarded grants from major Australian Government research funding bodies, including the Australian Research Council, the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Medical Research Future Fund.

Earmarked scholarships offer PhD students the opportunity to contribute to large projects of national significance and work with leading researchers. The scholarship provides a living stipend of $32,192 per annum (2023 rate, indexed annually), tuition fees, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You can apply anytime - there is no closing date.

Summary of phd program:.

Intracellular single-cell parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium infect vertebrates, including humans, worldwide. Cryptosporidiosis is self-limiting disease in healthy hosts but represents a life-threatening problem in immunocompromised individuals for which there is no effective treatment. The diversity of the genus Cryptosporidium is mystifying for many biologists and even more so for non-specialists nevertheless is critical for understanding the epidemiology of the disease. A DNA approach to identity stands on the implicit assumption that the reference databases used for comparison are sufficiently complete and feature rich with annotated entries. However, the uncertain taxonomic reliability and annotations in public DNA repositories (GenBank) form a major obstacle to sequence-based species identification.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Emerging parasitic disease

The project Emerging parasitic disease: epidemiological, diagnostic and experimental approach will focus on development and elucidation of the epidemiology of newly or neglected disease in veterinary parasitology including (i) haemo- / tissue- parasites (Atoxoplasma, Babesia) and (ii) gastrointestinal parasites (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Tritrichomonas). This project aims to elucidate the molecular identity and relationships between different isolates using PCR diagnostic techniques using rDNA and protein coding genes. On the other hand, this study will deliver and validate the PCR diagnostic protocol for epidemiological studies and elucidating the biology of these organisms.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in neurological disorders

The Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience is located at the Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) in the Camperdown health research precinct. We investigate molecular and biochemical aspects of neural receptors in health and disease. In collaboration with The Ramaciotti Imaging Centre at BMRI we study the interaction between novel biomarkers (drugs and imaging probes) and neuroreceptors using classical molecular biology and protein chemistry approaches coupled with non-invasive imaging technologies that will improve our understanding of disease.

We are funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council to study the mechanisms by which amino acid sensing receptors control hormone secretion, appetite and satiety, and cell fate. A common way for PhD candidates to supplement their income is to do casual or even part-time work while completing their degree. However, this isn’t a viable option for everyone – and it may not be enough in some circumstances.

In such cases, a PhD scholarship is just what the doctorate ordered.

What is a PhD scholarship?

A PhD scholarship is much like any scholarship – it supports a PhD candidate to complete their studies. 

PhD scholarships are offered by a variety of universities, specific schools, and research institutes. For example, at The University of Queensland (UQ), there are 2 categories of PhD scholarships you can consider:

• UQ Graduate School scholarships  (UQGSS)  – about $33K per year for 3.5 years
• earmarked scholarships for joining an existing research project – about $32K per year for 3.5 years.

In either case, your scholarship will comprise tuition fees and a living stipend. Both types also come with the possibility of a single extension and both domestic and international students are eligible to apply.

There is also a UQ Graduate School Scholarship which only covers tuition fees and does not include a living stipend. The UQGSS-T is only available to domestic students.

Deciding which scholarship category suits you will likely come down to whether an existing research project aligns with your interests. If you’ve got a niche passion and the ambition to find your own supervisor and create a fresh research proposal , a Graduate School scholarship is likely the path for you.

However, things get a bit trickier when you’re creating a new research proposal. Here are some tips for how to get a fully funded PhD project:

• Make sure your school or institute knows you want a scholarship , as they will need to nominate you for one. At UQ, this means selecting the option in your PhD application that says I would like to be considered for a UQ scholarship…
• Choose the right supervisor. Some of the criteria for getting a PhD scholarship include the experience and expertise relevance of your supervisor and advisory team. So, you’ll want to find a supervisor who checks all the right boxes .
• Get advice from your PhD supervisor . The quality of your research project is another large factor in determining whether you get a PhD scholarship. At the start, the main means of demonstrating this is your research proposal, so be sure to use your supervisor’s wisdom to make this proposal as steadfast as possible .
• Prepare the appropriate documents/evidence. Other criteria include your academic performance, your research capabilities, and the quality of your proposed research environment. This means having evidence prepared to demonstrate these factors (e.g. the academic transcript from your honours/postgraduate degree, or details of the laboratory where you’ll be conducting your research) can help you attain a PhD scholarship.

• Successful completion of an undergraduate degree and subsequent additional honors degree which is graded at first-class or second class (upper division) and which includes a thesis or dissertation demonstrating the ability to research a PhD level; OR
• Successful completion of a Masters by Research degree that included a dissertation, indicating the ability to research PhD level

Is Australia good for PhD?

There are many reasons to pursue a PhD program in Australia. With the unique research opportunities and cutting-edge facilities the country has to offer, it’s a place to earn a PhD that can really make a difference. 

The other common motivations for international students to choose Australia for their PhD in Australia include: 

• Reputable research centers and universities with 15 of the leading HEI in the country in the top 250 globally.
• Interesting funding options from the Australian government or universities. Therefore, students are unlikely to pay the entirety of their PhD fees most of the time. In other words, more time to study and less to worry about study and living costs .

Structure of doctoral studies in Australia

A PhD research in Australia has the same structure as a PhD research in most popular study destinations. It usually consists of a pure research where students mainly work on their doctoral thesis.

The PhD program may also include courses units to give students the skills they need to successfully conduct research. Working on your thesis usually starts with a literature review to evaluate the existing data related to your topic.

Unlike in other countries, a PhD in Australia does not require an oral examination or thesis defense. Instead, 2 or 3 experts in the student’s field of study will assess their work. They will then examine the thesis and send a written report to the university in a few months.

Since this step may take several months, it’s possible to agree to a deadline in advance. Moreover, in the rare cases where Australian universities organize a viva voce, the examination usually takes place online (via video conference) instead of a face-to-face interview.

How many years is a PhD in Australia?

There is this one thing about PhDs that it can easily become overwhelming if you don’t fix an end date beforehand. But you should expect to complete a full-time PhD between 3 and 4 years in Australia. 

It can take more time depending on the object of your research and any obstacles you might come up with along the way. Part-time PhD on the other hand may take up to 6 years to complete. 

However, this format usually is not available for international students. In fact, one condition to obtain a student visa in Australia is that you must study full-time.  

What are the requirements to do PhD in Australia for international students?

To apply for a PhD program in Australia, you don’t necessarily need a master’s degree. You just need a first proven experience in conducting research. And a bachelor’s degree usually requires you to complete an extensive research project to graduate.

In general, each university sets its own requirements and application process. But you should nonetheless provide your: 

• Academic records
• Previous degrees certificates
• ID (a passport)
• English language proficiency proof (usually IELTS/ TOEFL/PTE scores)
• Letters of recommendation
• References (academic and/or professional ones)
• Statement of purpose / Research proposal

Some universities may wish to interview you for your PhD, that generally takes place online. Make sure then to get ready and make the arrangement via a video-conferencing platform. 

Another crucial step is also to find a PhD supervisor to supervise your research. Tuition fees for a PhD in Australia are relatively higher compared to what apply in other countries. However, thanks to many funding and scholarships available, so there’s a good chance that students won’t have to pay the entirety of the tuition fee.  

The Australian government estimates the cost of an international doctoral degree to be between AUD $20,000 and AUD $50,000 per year. This is the amount you should have available if you apply for a research project without a funding attached. 

But the good news is that many Australian PhD research projects are pre-funded. This is especially the case in majors such as science, engineering, medicine and technology. So if you haven’t yet chosen your project, this might be a way to pay for your PhD at a more affordable cost.

Australian National University Research Scholarships are available for high achieving local and international students who are conducting research in line with university’s strategic direction. As this scholarship is merit based, students must have achieved H1 or H2 equivalent in their previous studies.

16. Maitri Scholarship

Maitri Scholarship is an Australian government initiative to promote bilateral ties with India.

High achieving international students from India can apply for this scholarship from the year 2024.

• Temporary Accommodation
• Monthly stipend
• Funding for professional development
