The cool weather, the beautiful foliage, and the many outdoor activities make it a season to look forward to. In this essay, I will explain why autumn is my favorite season.

My favorite season is autumn because of the cool weather and beautiful foliage. After the hot and humid summer, the cool weather that autumn brings is a welcome relief. The temperature is just right, not too hot and not too cold. The air becomes crisp and refreshing, making it perfect for outdoor activities. The leaves on the trees change color and fall, creating a beautiful landscape. The red, yellow, and orange colors of the leaves are a sight to behold. The changing colors of the leaves make autumn a season of reflection and appreciation.

weather season essay

The four seasons of the year: spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter

The four seasons have very different characteristics.

Seasons are periods of the year with distinct weather conditions and day lengths.

Autumn (Fall)

Seasons are not the same everywhere, what causes the seasons, additional resources, bibliography.

Seasons are periods of the year with distinct weather conditions and day lengths.

The four seasons — winter, spring, summer, autumn — can vary significantly in characteristics and can prompt changes in the world around them. Here, we explore the seasons of the year in more detail.

Attributes of the seasons may vary by location, but there are still broad definitions that cross most of the boundaries.

In the spring , seeds take root and vegetation begins to grow. The weather is warmer and often wetter. Animals wake or return from warmer climates, often with newborns. Melting snow from the previous season, along with increased rainfall, can cause flooding along waterways, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

In the summer , temperatures may increase to the hottest of the year. If they spike too high, heat waves or droughts may cause trouble for people, animals, and plants. For example, in the summer of 2003, the high temperatures claimed more than 30,000 lives, according to Encyclopedia Britannica . Rainfall may increase in some areas, as well. Others may receive less water, and forest fires may become more frequent.

When does summer start?

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer starts on June 1 and runs to August 31

What is the hottest summer on record?

Historically, the heatwave during the Dust Bowl Summer of 1936 was considered the hottest summer on record, but in 2021 the average summer temperature of the contiguous U.S. was 74.0 degrees Fahrenheit (23.3 degrees Celsius), 2.6 degrees above average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In the autumn , or fall, temperatures cool again. Plants may begin to grow dormant. Animals might prepare themselves for the upcoming cold weather, storing food or traveling to warmer regions.

Various cultures have celebrated bountiful harvests with annual festivals. Thanksgiving is a good example. "Thanksgiving in the United States is a historical commemoration but it has a spiritual dimension strongly associated with homecoming and giving praise for what has been bestowed upon us," Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live Science.

Why is it called autumn instead of fall?

Both 'autumn' and 'fall' are words used in the English language to describe the season that starts on 1 September in the Northern Hemisphere, with fall being commonly used in American English. According to Dictionary.com , the word autumn comes from the old French word 'autompne', which itself originated from the Latin 'autumnus'. The roots of the Latin name are obscure, but it was first recorded in the English language from the late 1300s.

Winter often brings a chill. Some areas may experience snow or ice, while others see only cold rain. Animals find ways to warm themselves and may have changed their appearance to adapt. "In a similar way to the Autumnal theme, Winter festivals celebrate the return of the light during a time of deepest physical darkness," said De Rossi. The Indian festival of Diwali, for example, which takes place between October and November, celebrates the triumph of righteousness, and light over darkness.

Is winter the longest season?

Although it is easy to imagine the seasons neatly fitting into four equal lengths, according to NPR this isn't quite the case, they are all slightly different — and their duration changes depending on which hemisphere you are in.

Due to the elliptical orbit of Earth around the sun, at certain points in the year the planet is moving faster and shortening the season. However, the distance from our star has less impact on Earth's seasons than the planet's tilt, which means that summers are warm in the Northern Hemisphere despite being further from the sun. As it is moving slower, the spring-summer season is also actually longer, by about seven days.

The timing and characteristics of the seasons depend upon the location on Earth . Regions near the equator experience fairly constant temperatures throughout the year, with balmy winters barely discernible from warm summers. This is because it gets fairly constant light from the sun, due to its position on the outer curve of the Earth, according to the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program.

For areas to the north and south, the seasons can change more significantly. People closer to the poles might experience icier, more frigid winters, while those closer to the equator might suffer hotter summers.

According to Time and Date :

– Spring: March 1 to May 31;

– Summer: June 1 to August 31;

– Autumn (Fall): September 1 to November 30

– Winter: December 1 to February 28 (February 29 in a leap year).

Other factors can also affect the weather and temperature over the seasons; some areas experience dry summers as temperatures spike, while others might call summer their "wet season." A wet season is when a majority of a country or region's annual precipitation occurs, according to the Met Office . Mountainous regions might experience more snowfall than plains within the same latitude, while oceanfront property could see an increase in violent tropical storms as the weather shifts.

The time of year a region experiences a season depends on whether it is in the northern or southern hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere experiences winter while its northern neighbors encounter summer; the north sees the slow blossom of spring while the south brings in the autumn harvest.

A diagram demonstrating how the seasons are caused by the Earth’s axial tilt

The cycle of seasons is caused by our planet's tilt toward the sun . The Earth spins around an (invisible) axis. At different times during the year, the northern or southern axis is closer to the sun. During these times, the hemisphere tipped toward the star experiences summer, while the hemisphere tilted away from the sun experiences winter, according to NOAA .

At other locations in Earth's annual journey, the axis is not tilted toward or away from the sun. During these times of the year, the hemispheres experience spring and autumn.

The astronomical definition of the seasons relates to specific points in Earth's trip around the sun. The summer and winter solstice, the longest and shortest day of the year, occurs when Earth's axis is either closest or farthest from the sun. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs around June 21, the same day as the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, according to NOAA. The south's summer solstice occurs around December 21, the winter solstice for the north. In both hemispheres, the summer solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, while the winter solstice is considered the first day of astronomical winter.

Equinoxes are another significant day during Earth's journey around the sun. On these days, the planet's axis is pointed parallel to the sun, rather than toward or away from it. Day and night during the equinoxes are supposed to be close to equal. The spring, or vernal, equinox for the northern hemisphere takes place around March 20, the same day as the south's autumnal equinox. The vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere occurs around September 20, when people in the north celebrate the autumnal equinox . The vernal equinox marks the first day of astronomical spring for a hemisphere, while the autumnal equinox ushers in the first day of fall.

But changes in the weather often precede these significant points. The meteorological seasons focus on these changes, fitting the seasons to the three months that best usher them in. December to February marks meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere and meteorological summer in the southern. March, April, and May are lauded as spring or autumn, depending on the location, while June through August are the months of summer for the north and winter for the south. September, October, and November conclude the cycle, ushering in fall in northern regions and spring in southern, according to NOAA.

The seasons can bring a wide variety to the year for those locations that experience them in full. The weather in each one may allow people to engage in activities that they cannot perform in others — skiing in the winter, swimming in the summer. Each season brings with it its own potential dangers, but also its own particular brand of beauty.

People can also enjoy their time by sitting outside their homes. And castles make for a perfect summer day at the beach. When going to the pool, one will most likely find a suntan lotion dispenser. From late afternoon thunderstorms to s'mores by the campfire with friends and family, summers are a wonderful time of year filled with many different stereotypical memories that pop into mind as the word is spoken.

There are different seasons in a year, summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. With each season, we witness certain changes not only in our lives but also on our Earth. Seasons are reminders to us that change is inevitable. India is one of the few countries that experiences all six seasons in a year. They are summer, monsoon, autumn, pre-winter, winter, and spring. However, these seasons vary from region to region due to factors like latitude, longitude, topography, and environmental factors. As per the Hindu calendar, each season is divided into two months throughout the year.

The summer season is one of the main seasons in a tropical country like India. Summer sets in April and continues up to the end of July. Summer is usually associated with hot, dry weather. The days are longer, and the nights are shorter during this season. From late morning to midnight, heat persists during the summer months.

In the Hindu calendar, these months are called Jyeshta and Aashaadha. In India, since the tropic of cancer passes through the northern hemisphere, the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh experience the summer season. The temperature in some places increases up to 50o Celsius.

Disadvantages

The days become so hot and long that people suffer from terrible heat right from the morning till midnight. It becomes difficult for people to commute. Most people are spotted in light dresses, sunglasses, and sandals. On some days, a hot and dusty wind blows at noon and makes life more miserable. People prefer staying indoors. In the northern part of India, this wind is called 'Loo', and it is not safe to get exposed to this. In the daytime, the scorching heat of the sun affects normal life. The difficulties in this season are innumerable. Ponds and pools dry up. The water level in wells also goes down. A water crisis is felt almost everywhere. The absence of enough trees and persistent pollution aggravates the problems in summer. The weak and the old sometimes fall victim to sunstrokes in the hot sun. Birds and stray animals face lots of hardship, as they don't get sufficient water to drink. Many health issues like dysentery, dehydration, and diarrhoea are prevalent in this season. The towns and cities look deserted in the afternoons. Everything comes to a standstill during the day because of the simmering rays of the sun. The nights become pleasant, and most activities are done after the sunset during this season.

Besides the innumerable difficulties people face, it is the most awaited season, especially by the students. They get over with their final exams, and it is vacation time for them as well as their parents. They plan to visit their grandparents or places like hill stations to escape the heat. Some also go to the beaches, as they are very pleasant at night. Children take up many indoor activities. Swimming and other water sports are some favorite outdoor activities in this season, making it somewhat pleasant. Summer break for the students is a good time for learning various new activities. Most students go for summer camps at cooler places.

Various kinds of vegetation thrive around us. Many kinds of fruits and flowers are available in this season. Mango is the most dominant fruit of the summer season. Other fruits like jackfruits, guava, litchis, watermelons, and pineapples are available in plenty in the summer season.

We can see many beautiful animals and creatures thriving in our surroundings since they wake up from their hibernation.

Cold drinks, ice-creams, and watery fruit juices like grapes, cucumber, watermelon, are in high demand in this season. People prefer cold foods like kulfis, chilled juices, etc.

It is an important season for the farmers. They sow seeds for new crops because this climate is favorable for the cultivation of the crops. They sow Zaid crops like pumpkin, cucumber, and bitter gourd, etc.

Important festivals like Buddha Purnima, Rath yatra are celebrated during this season. Some more important festivals like Baisakhi, Ram Navami, Raja Parva, and Hanuman Jayanti are also celebrated.

The summer season, which is full of heat and dust, is a blessing in disguise. The scorching rays of the sun evaporate the water from all water bodies at this time, and this phenomenon gives way to the advent of the rainy season. The low pressure created over the landmass of India during this season is responsible for months-long monsoon rain.

Like all other seasons, summer has its own uniqueness. There are both advantages and disadvantages in this season but this season can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Essay on Seasons

Essay on seasons

The world is very vast and every part of it has a different climate. However, the most prominent seasons are summer, winter and rainy seasons.

Different parts of the world experience different seasons at different times of the year.

Seasons change according to the earth’s revolution around the sun. During the year. as the earth revolves around the sun some parts of the earth face the sun and receive more heat energy from the sun. Hence, these parts of the earth experience summer. At the same time, the parts of the earth which are not facing the sun receive less heat energy, hence, experience winter. That is why at a given point in time, some part of world experience summer and some winter.

Some parts of the world do not get very cold, mostly because of the influence of the sea. As the winter starts fading away and the heat begins to intensify, people pack up their woolens. Out come the sun shades, umbrellas and cotton clothes. Sale of ice creams and soft drinks becomes a regular feature during scorching summers.

Between winter and summer seasons, there is a short period called ‘spring’. When springs set in, flowers burst into bloom and the earth seems to be smiling. During the rainy season, raincoats and umbrellas are constant companions. As the showers fade away, once again winter sets in. Thus, goes on the season’s cycle.

We enjoy each season with its fruits, festivals, and weather.

One of the best things I liked about the hot summer season was eating large watermelons with the entire family. Our grandfather used to buy us watermelons, which my mother served to all of us. I plan to visit my grandmother’s house every summer season.’

MOSCOW (AP) — Heavy snowfall has hit the Russian capital, disrupting traffic on roads and flights in and out of three Moscow airports, officials and media reported on Monday.

The snowfall that began Sunday and continued overnight has brought an additional 23 centimeters (nine inches) to already high levels of snow in Moscow, according to deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov. About 135,000 people and 18,000 pieces of equipment were involved in the snow-clearing effort.

Nearly 200 trucks got stuck in the snow over the past 24 hours, and required assistance from road traffic workers, the Moscow transport department reported.

A total of 53 flights were delayed and five more were canceled on Monday morning in three out of four Moscow airports, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported. Most of the delays occurred at the Sheremetyevo airport north of the capital. The two airports to the south, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, also experienced delays, the report said. At the Zhukovsky airport southeast of the city, flights were departing from Moscow on schedule, according to Vedomosti.

Heavy snow, as well as temperatures below -50 C (-58 F), were also reported in the Siberian region of Yakutia. In the neighboring region of Magadan, similar temperatures were expected in the coming days.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is gearing up to be an active one. Now's the time to prepare

weather season essay

Hurricane season is less than two months away, and now is a great time to take inventory of your supplies and make sure things like generators are running as expected.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be an active one, according to early predictions.

Last month, AccuWeather said this season could be an “explosive” one with the potential to break the all-time record of 30 named storms in a single season.

Based on similar weather patterns in prior years, Florida is among the states that could be especially vulnerable this year, along with Texas and the Carolinas.

Here are some tips to prepare for the 2024 hurricane season .

Checking your hurricane kit

Your hurricane kit is one of the most important aspects of storm prep. Why have a kit? Waiting until a hurricane is heading in your direction is a surefire way to forget something crucial, run out of time before you can get everything together or leave you in a position where you’re scavenging empty aisles at your local grocery store.

Preparing ahead of time allows you to procure all the items on your list. It also allows you to check your list twice too, ensuring you won’t miss anything.

Here are the absolute basics:

  • Non-perishable food (enough to last at least three days)
  • Water (enough to last at least three days)
  • First-aid kit (include any prescription medication you may need)
  • Personal hygiene items and sanitation items
  • Flashlights (have extra batteries on hand)
  • Battery-operated radio (again, have extra batteries)
  • Waterproof container with cash and important documents
  • Manual can opener
  • Lighter or matches
  • Books, magazines, games for recreation
  • Special needs items: pet supplies and baby supplies, if applicable
  • Cooler and ice packs
  • A plan for evacuation and for if family members are separated

A pro-tip for purchasing food and water is to be on the look out for buy one, get one deals. Use what you need now and save the rest for your hurricane supply kit.

Florida 2024 sales tax holidays: Florida could get 4 sales tax holidays in 2024, including 2 hurricane preparedness holidays

Be aware of important hurricane and storm-related alerts

Do you know the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning off the top of your head? If this isn’t your first hurricane season, chances are you do, but if it’s your first time or you simply need a refresher, brushing up on your hurricane knowledge is always a good idea.

Here are some important hurricane-related terms you’ll hear ad nauseum during hurricane season:

  • Tropical Storm Watch : Tropical storm conditions are possible in the area.
  • Hurricane Watch : Hurricane conditions are possible in the area. Watches are issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm-force winds.
  • Tropical Storm Warning : Tropical storm conditions are expected in the area.
  • Hurricane Warning : Hurricane conditions are expected in the area. Warnings are issued 36 hours in advance of tropical storm-force winds.
  • Eye : Clear, sometimes well-defined center of the storm with calmer conditions.
  • Eye Wall : Surrounding the eye contains some of the most severe weather of the storm with the highest wind speed and largest precipitation.
  • Rain Bands : Bands coming off the cyclone produce severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, wind and tornadoes.
  • Storm Surge : An often underestimated and deadly result of ocean water swelling as a result of a landfalling storm and quickly flooding coastal and sometimes areas further inland.

Take a look at your insurance policy

An incoming hurricane is not the time to realize you forgot to inform your insurance company about the new shed you built at the end of last year — or worse, finding out your coverage has lapsed.

Here are some things to consider when you check your home insurance policy:

  • Are you familiar with what your policy covers?  In Florida, HO3 and HO6 policies cover most things you’re likely to encounter during a hurricane, but it’s always best to make sure you have a special case that isn’t covered. It’s also a good time to schedule any high-value items.
  • Do you have flood insurance? Do you need it?  Flood insurance isn’t covered by home insurance, and flood zones can change. It’s always a good idea to annually check flood maps so you can make an informed decision.
  • Gather your insurance documents.  Sure, you can usually get quick access to your home insurance documents online, but having physical copies is useful when the power goes out.
  • Don’t forget about your auto insurance.  We always think about our homes first, but following these same steps for your car insurance is just as important.

'Hyperactive' hurricane season: Pensacola could see a 'hyperactive' 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Here's what to know

Put together or review your family emergency plan

Does your family know where you would go if you had to evacuate? If not, now is a great time to put together a family emergency plan, which helps ensure everyone is on the same page and doesn’t put anyone in a situation where they are having to make a guess in a dangerous situation.

Family emergency plans involve collecting crucial information and sharing it with everyone in your family so they all have access to it, formulating evacuation plans and more. If you’ve never written one, here are some ideas to get you started.

Collect important paperwork : Grabbing your home insurance documents isn’t the only thing you should gather. You’ll want to grab living wills, birth certificates, social security cards, important health-related documents and more.

Gather important contact information : Put together a contact list that you can send to all of your family that includes things like your family doctor, pharmacist, counselor and veterinarians. Also include phone numbers to local resources like the poison control center, animal poison control helpline and the disaster distress helpline so no one has to go looking if things take a turn for the worst.

Check up on your generator

If you have a gas generator that has been neglected, now is the time to pull it out and ensure it runs properly. Gas left in gas-powered engines for long periods will go stale and could prevent them from running.

Now is a great time to swap the oil and throw a little gas inside your generator to ensure it runs. If it’s been a while and still cranks, leave it running for a bit. You can add a fuel stabilizer to help increase the lifespan of the gas, but it’s best only to add a little.

For regular maintenance, make sure you crank your generator and let it run or a bit at least once a month. Doing this every time you mow your lawn is an easy way to keep up with the process. It can also be helpful to pick up an extra bit of oil and a spark plug, too, on the off chance that it goes out during a hurricane.

Prep your yard

If you haven’t already taken advantage of our cool spring weather to whip your yard back into shape after this past winter, then now is a great time to start. Trim up any overgrown bushes and keep your eyes peeled for fallen tree branches or other yard debris that could be dangerous if picked up by storm-force winds. Doing a little bit each weekend can ensure that your yard is tidy by the time hurricane season begins.

Kristen Cassady, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, said that it is typical for severe weather frequency to ramp up in Ohio at the beginning of March, though March is not a peak tornado season month.

“We typically do see severe weather events including tornadoes in the month of March, even though there is a slightly higher frequency climatologically in April and May,” Cassady said. “March is still one of the primary months for tornadoes in the Ohio Valley.”

Ohio sees record number of tornadoes for the first three months of 2024

Ohio had 22 tornadoes touch down through early April, according to Brandon Peloquin, warning coordination meteorologist at the NWS office in Wilmington, the most for this early in the year. The previous record was 12 tornadoes in 1986,  WBNS TV-10 reports . The average number of tornadoes in a single year for Ohio is 21, Peloquin said.

What is Ohio's record for most tornadoes in a year?

The worst year for tornadoes in Ohio was 1992, when 62 twisters touched down, Peloquin said.

The strongest that year was an  EF4 tornado  that hit Van Wert County in Western Ohio on Feb. 18. With wind speeds of 166 to 200 mph, the tornado was on the ground for 2.8 miles and caused six injuries but no fatalities. It destroyed a house, a mobile home and two cars, and damaged nine homes,  according to Tornado Talk .

National Weather Service data shows different total

The NWS tornado total of 22 obviously differs from NOAA data.

Peloquin said some databases may show a higher number because tornadoes that cross county lines may be counted multiple times. As an example, he said a single continuous tornado that moves from Auglaize County into Logan County is just one tornado but may be counted in some databases as two since it affected two counties.

Are early, severe tornadoes the new normal?

Experts say February tornadoes  are not unheard of  as air temperatures warm toward the end of winter, but the storms still fall outside Ohio’s normal tornado season.

Global warming could shift tornado season early in the future, leading to strong storms that draw from strong winter winds. The slow shift toward earlier springs and later falls could lead to more tornadoes or stronger storms in general.

“We can't really say that with certainty,” NWS meteorologist Logan Clark said. “Whenever you do get that increased warming earlier in the season, then you do have that potential if everything kind of aligned together to produce a system that has very strong dynamics.”

Who has the upper hand in a Virginia budget standoff?

weather season essay

Lawmakers are expected to return to the Capitol in Richmond next month for a special session on the budget.

Budget standoffs are nothing new in Virginia politics, and recent years have seen a number of disagreements that extend all the way to, and sometimes even past, the deadline of the new fiscal year – beginning on July the 1 st .

Former Governor Jim Gilmore says the current governor has the upper hand in his continuing standoff with members of the General Assembly.

"Basically, the legislature I think ran up the white flag and said, ‘We’re not going to accommodate this governor unless we start over,’" Gilmore says. "And I think that's a victory for him."   But will members of the General Assembly end up victorious in the end? Bill Leighty is a former chief of staff to two former governors, and he says lawmakers usually have the upper hand in these kinds of negotiations.

"They're the ones that have the power to put the budget in place, so the governor is really following the lead of the legislature when it comes to the budget," says Leighty.

If members of the General Assembly are unable to come to an agreement with the governor, Virginia might end up facing a government shutdown unless they can strike a deal before the 1 st of July.

Rainstorms Kill More Than 130 Across Afghanistan and Pakistan

Pakistani officials warned of more flooding and heavy rainfall next week, stoking fears of a particularly brutal monsoon season to come.

By Zia ur-Rehman and Christina Goldbaum

Zia ur-Rehman reported from Islamabad and Christina Goldbaum from London.

A deluge of unseasonably heavy rains has lashed Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent days, killing more than 130 people across both countries, with the authorities forecasting more flooding and rainfall, and some experts pointing to climate change as the cause.

In Afghanistan, at least 70 people have been killed in flash floods and other weather-related incidents, while more than 2,600 homes have been destroyed or damaged, according to Mullah Janan Sayeq, a spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management. At least 62 people have died in the storms in neighboring Pakistan, which has been hammered by rainfall at nearly twice the average rate for this time of year, according to Pakistani officials.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the Pakistani region bordering Afghanistan, appears to be the hardest hit. Flash floods and landslides caused by torrential rains have damaged homes and destroyed infrastructure. Photos and videos from the province show roads turned into raging rivers, and homes and bridges being swept away.

“The rains have caused significant damage,” Bilal Faizi, spokesperson for the provincial disaster management authority, said in a phone interview. He added that at least 33 people had died in the province over the past four days, and 336 houses had been destroyed.

Around midnight on Monday in Swat Valley, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Akbar Zada woke up to a thunderous crash after a boulder tumbled down a nearby mountain in the rain and destroyed a room of his home where two of his sons were sleeping. The boys, 14 and 16, were both killed.

“The rain has been relentless these past years, and now it’s taken my sons,” Mr. Zada said in a phone interview.

The deluge in Afghanistan and Pakistan began at the same time that rainstorms swept the Gulf, battering the United Arab Emirates and Oman with record-setting rainfall that killed at least 20 people in both countries. The storms in the United Arab Emirates constituted the largest rainfall event in the region in 75 years.

In Pakistan, the recent flooding comes just over two years after a devastating monsoon season battered the country in 2022, killing over 1,700 people and affecting about 33 million more. That flooding destroyed millions of acres of crops, caused billions of dollars’ worth of damage and started an international conversation about the environmental costs of global warming that poorer countries disproportionately shoulder .

The rainstorms this week offered more grim reminders of those costs. In Swat Valley, a popular tourist destination, landslides and washed-out roads caused by the heavy rains stranded thousands, mostly tourists, according to Amjad Ali Khan, a local member of Parliament who oversaw rescue efforts. At least 15 landslides have been reported in the area.

“To mitigate future climate-change disasters, the provincial government has plans to build retention dams to manage water flow and control deforestation to prevent soil erosion,” Dr. Khan said.

Heavy rains also triggered devastating flash floods that tore through Pakistan’s Balochistan Province, particularly its coastal region, causing widespread damage in Gwadar, a seaside city.

Last month, Gwadar received an exceptional amount of rainfall exceeding seven inches in less than 48 hours. Situated in an arid region of southern Pakistan, Gwadar had not experienced a deluge of that magnitude in recent memory, and the rainfall submerged most buildings in the city.

On Thursday, people in Pakistan were bracing for more heavy rain as the authorities issued another flood warning for early next week. Officials blamed unseasonably fast-melting glaciers in several Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts for the coming floods.

Those weather warnings also spurred concerns about the unseasonable rain affecting Pakistan’s wheat harvest, and stoked fears that the country’s monsoon season between June and September might also bring increased levels of devastation this year.

“This is exactly what we’ve been warning about,” said Muhammad Qasim, a professor of environmental science at the University of Swat. “Climate change is leading to more erratic weather patterns, with extreme events like heat waves, droughts and unpredictable monsoons becoming increasingly common.”

Safiullah Padshah contributed reporting.

A multi-day outbreak of severe weather could include tornadoes, flooding: What to know

weather season essay

April means severe weather, and this month has been no exception. Plus there's more on the way.

Forecasters are warning of another multi-day outbreak of severe weather over the central U.S., which started Tuesday and will last for much of the week. The storms Tuesday were forecast to rattle southern Iowa into northern Missouri and west-central Illinois, where a tornado watch was in effect.

Already this month, through April 15, there have been more than 1,100 reports of severe thunderstorms (which includes hail, wind, or tornadoes) across the nation, according to the Storm Prediction Center . But that is actually below the average pace for April, which concludes with an average of nearly 3,000 severe thunderstorm reports for the entire month.

Severe weather threats in Midwest, South

By Wednesday, the severe weather threat moves into Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, where cities such as Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland could all see intense thunderstorms. "Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon and evening from southern Lower Michigan into parts of the Ohio Valley," the SPC said.

Heavy rain from the thunderstorms could also lead to flooding in some areas, the National Weather Service in Cleveland said.

And Thursday, it'll be the Deep South's turn to dodge the storms, where cities such as Memphis and Little Rock will be most at risk of bad weather. The SPC warned that "scattered strong to severe storms capable of gusty winds and hail will be possible Thursday from parts of Texas northeastward toward the Ohio Valley."

April is usually an active month for severe weather

April typically kicks off the worst of the severe weather season in the U.S., and this month started with a bang, Weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said, "with an outbreak of  at least 74 tornadoes  from Oklahoma to the Ohio Valley. That was followed a week later by another rash of severe weather that spawned  at least 19 tornadoes in the Deep South ."

Flash flooding has also been reported this month in the Ohio Valley, east Texas, New Orleans and Tallahassee, Florida, among other areas, Erdman said.

What is a severe thunderstorm?

The National Weather Service offers this specific definition of a severe thunderstorm: A thunderstorm is classified as “severe” when it contains one or more of the following: hail one inch in size or greater, winds gusting in excess of 57.5 mph, or a tornado.

Based on past weather data, the greatest severe weather threat area in the U.S. extends from Texas to southern Minnesota, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory .

Spring is peak season for severe storms and tornadoes

While tornadoes can hit at any time, the U.S. is now into the peak of tornado season: April, May and June are "overwhelmingly the most active" when it comes to the thunderstorms that spawn these destructive forces of nature, according to Weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce.

Vermont farms are still recovering from flooding as they enter the growing season

weather season essay

By LISA RATHKE Associated Press

BERLIN, Vt. (AP) — Hundreds of Vermont farms are still recovering from July’s catastrophic flooding and other extreme weather as they head into this year’s growing season. Dog River Farm lost nearly all its produce crops in the summer flooding. The owner says they removed truckloads of river silt and sand from the fields but another round of flooding in December washed away more soils, wiped out the garlic crop and left behind more silt and several giant holes. A grassroots fundraising campaign called Dig Deep Vermont announced Wednesday that it’s giving out its first grants to 32 farms to help with some of those expenses. Vermont’s agriculture secretary says while the grants ranging from $200 to $1800 won’t make farms whole, they hopefully will help pay a bill or two.
