Kenyon Writing Award

High school seniors can apply for this scholarship program at Kenyon College which offers up to $15,000 per year of merit based aid. It is based off of your portfolio and does not take into account financial need, high school GPA , or other factors. Submissions typically have to be in by January of your senior year.

Barbara Caras Memorial Scholarship for Film Students

The scholarship is open to students in Sarasota or Manatee County, Florida who have completed at least one full year at an accredited Florida College and are majoring in Film, Computer Animation, Creative Writing, Motion Design, or Illustration. Five recipients will earn a $2,000 award. The application deadline is July 31st of the current year.

Lycoming College Creative Writing Scholarship

The scholarship is open to students majoring in Creative Writing at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA and must submit five poems and/or a short story not to exceed ten pages. Six recipients will be selected and can earn up to $3,000. The scholarship deadline for the Fall 2023 Class is March 1, 2023.  

Arkansas Tech University Gwaltney Scholarship

The scholarship is open to ATU students who submit individual works of fiction to the Department of English. Recipients earn a one-time cash award every year. The deadline to submit your entry is 2 weeks before the end of the spring semester.

Lake Forest College Carnegie English Essay Contest

The contest is open to first-year students of Lake Forest College who plan to study English either through the literature or creative writing track and submit an essay, between 500 and 1,000 words answering a designated prompt. Four winners will be awarded $2,500 annually. Submission deadline is March 1, 2023.

Austin Peay State University Creative Writing Scholarships

The scholarships are open to undergraduate and incoming APSU students who email a 10-20 page manuscript of fiction, poetry, or creative non-fiction, to Lakota Withrow at [email protected] . Awards are for $600 or $1,200. The deadline to apply is March 18th.

If you're a high school senior, then first off, congratulations! You're now in your fourth and final year of high school, which means a few different things... First, you're one step closer to becoming a college student - woohoo! Second, you're now officially able to start applying for scholarships for high school seniors. 

Scholarships are an AMAZING way to help you pay for college because the money you earn through scholarships does not ever need to be repaid.

A scholarship is, to put it simply, free money that you can earn to put towards paying for college.

Unlike other types of financial aid (aka, loans), money that you earn from scholarships doesn't ever need to be repaid, which is what makes it so awesome. 

Nope, not at all! In fact, you're in a prime position when it comes to applying for scholarships because not only can you apply for scholarships that are open to high school students, but you can also begin to prepare for scholarships that are open to college students.

By starting the process as a senior in high school, you can get fully acquainted and comfortable with what it entails, so that once you get onto campus in the fall, you know exactly what you have to do to secure the bag! 

In addition to Access Scholarships , there are tons of other places and resources you can check out to help you search and apply for scholarships. 

You'll want to start by heading over to the website(s) run by your state that outline state-based financial aid and scholarship opportunities. 

Then, you'll want to reach out to your school counselor (and do research on Google) to learn about local scholarships that you can apply for. 

Another more unique way to find potential scholarship opportunities that are specific to you is actually through utilizing social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, even Pinterest!). You can follow hashtags on Instagram such as #TexasScholarships (if you live in Texas) so that anytime an organization posts a relevant scholarship with that hashtag, you can see it and apply if you're interested!  

Great question! One of the main ways that you can stand out through your application is through the extra requirements that you submit.

Whether it's an essay , a video, letters of recommendation, or other additional submissions, these are all places where you will want to dedicate extra time and effort to make sure that what you're sending in is authentically YOU, unique, eye-catching, and memorable. 

As a senior, I know that you must have a lot on your plate that you're trying to balance. My number one tip to get it all done (and be as successful as possible in the process) is to set goals AND stay organized - more on this in the tips section below the scholarships!

Easy Rolling Scholarships for High School Seniors 

Niche $10,000 scholarship.

Award Amount:  $25,000

Scholarship Deadline:  Monthly

Details: The Niche $25,000 No Essay Scholarship is open to high school seniors and is awarded monthly.

Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards Scholarship

Details: $4,000 four-year scholarships available for children and grandchildren of Elks in good standing. Parent or grandparent must have been an Elk for two years and continue to be a member in good standing. Must be high school senior and apply through the related member’s Elks Lodge.

Americanism Essay Scholarship

Award Amount: $100 - $1,200

Scholarship Deadline : First Friday in February

Details: The Americanism Essay Scholarship is open to Illinois high school students and requires an essay on Americanism and good citizenship.

AFA Teens for Alzheimer's Awareness College Scholarship

Award Amount: $5,000

Scholarship Deadline: February 15

Details: AFA’s Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship Essay Contest is an annual competition for college-bound students.  Applicants are asked to write a 1,200 to 1,500-word essay that describes the impact of Alzheimer’s disease on themselves, their families or their communities, and what they have learned in light of coping with the brain disorder.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarship

Award Amount: up to $5,000

Details: To qualify for the scholarship, a student must be nominated by his/her school counselor or administrator. Students apply and compete at the local Chapter for up to $10,000 in scholarships. Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program

Heisman High School Scholarship

Award Amount:  $1,000 - $10,000

Details:  Open to high-achieving high school seniors in the US with at least a 3.0 GPA who participate in a wide range of sports as well as school and community activities.

Imagine America High School Scholarship

Scholarship Deadline:  December 1

Details: Imagine America, sponsored by the Imagine America Foundation (IAF), is a $1,000 career education award that is available to recent high school graduates who are pursuing postsecondary education at participating career colleges across the United States.

10x Digital Marketing Scholarship

Details: 10x digital awards a $2,000 scholarship each year to one talented student (twice a year) who is majoring in (or planning on majoring in) a field related to digital marketing. 

Undocumented students and international students studying in the US are eligible to apply.

Ron Brown Scholars Program

Details: RBSP competitively awards 45 – 50 four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship.

Applicants for the Ron Brown Scholarship  MUST  be Black/African American , US citizens or permanent residents, and a current high school senior at the time of their application.

National Honor Society Scholarship Program

Award Amount:  Varies

Details: The National Honor Society is committed to helping students achieve their secondary education goals, and provides the following resources to students and their families to help with the planning process. 600 scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors who are members of the NHS.

Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship Program

Award Amount: $40,000

Scholarship Deadline : December 15

Details: A serious 2-for-1 scholarship for high school students interested in computer science. Win $40,000 for college AND a paid programming internship at Amazon.

Best Scholarships for High School Seniors: Tips for Searching & Applying!

Look, the search and application process for scholarships for high school seniors is not always a smooth-sailing process. But, the fact that you've made it this far in the post and are taking the initiative to learn more about scholarships is a great start in itself!

Here are a few quick tips to help you along your scholarship journey...

1. Set goals for yourself along the way.

I was a high school senior not too long ago, so I know exactly what it's like to have to create a balance between your schoolwork, extracurriculars, college applications, and scholarships. 

It's not always an easy task, but that's why you should work on setting goals for yourself and creating a scholarship strategy ! 

Your goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant/Realistic, Timely). Setting goals for things such as how much you are aiming to earn from scholarships and when you will set aside time to search and apply will help you to stay on track with what you want to achieve.

2. Know where to look.

If you're here and you're reading this, that means you know one great place to look! The  Access Scholarships Search Engine is an awesome resource with tons of scholarships for high school seniors. But beyond Access Scholarships, be sure to...

• Reach out to your school counselor to discuss some of the local scholarships that are out there for you to apply for
• Head over to your state's financial aid website to learn more about their grants and resources 

3. Apply often.

Don't think of the scholarship process as one that you can engage in only once every few months and see success with.

The scholarship process requires consistency and dedication. If you want to have the best chance at winning scholarships, you need to be dedicated to the process (creating a healthy mix of mostly essay scholarships with some no-essay scholarships is a good strategy) and put in the effort!

4. Be organized, thorough, and on time.

Lots of students find it helpful to organize their scholarship application and search process using a spreadsheet (virtual or physical). These are extremely useful because you can keep track of important deadlines, requirements for each scholarship, and more.

5. Think outside the box.

In addition to these, don't be afraid to venture out to find scholarships that are specific to YOU in all aspects! This means thinking critically about your hobbies and interests, and passions outside of academics.

• Art or creative scholarships are for students with exceptional talent in visual arts, music, dance, theater, or creative writing.

Why are scholarships important for High School seniors?

Scholarships mainly provide financial aid to help high school students achieve their academic goals stress-free. The two major ways scholarships help High School seniors are:

Upon reaching high school students might go through some mixed feelings. Students at this stage prepare themselves for college. Some students might have also decided about the colleges they want to be in, but the families can’t afford the finances for college, and for those students, full-ride scholarships come across like a magic wand. Award amount .

A full 4-year scholarship will be provided with a scholarship of $200,000.

• You should be a high school student. 
• Eligibility depends on your academic results. The test scores, writing ability, and class rank regarding financial need are considered.

2. The Burger King Scholars Program                              

Award amount.

$1000 to $60000.   

 Eligibility 

• You must be a citizen of the U.S. or a Canadian citizen living in the U.S. 
• The students must acquire a minimum GPA of 2.0 to qualify for a scholarship. Other skills, community services, and work experience are also considered.

3. The Gates Scholarship          

Full cost of attendance that includes tuition fee, transportation, and more.  

• An American Indian, African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, or Pacific Islander American with a minimum of 3.3 GPA can enroll. 
• A high school student getting in the top 10% of the graduating class is eligible for the scholarship.

4. The Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship              

• The award of $1,000-$4,000 is given to the student per year in his full college career.
• Weekend interviews are set for students who can participate and win a chance to get an award of $5,000 to $12,500 per year.
• You must be a U.S. citizen. Apply with financial information and an essay. 
• You are qualified based on academic achievements, financial needs, community services, and leadership skills.

5. The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship  

Amount award.

A scholarship of $10,000 is given for an additional 3 years. (total $40,000).

• Must be a U.S citizen with a 3.0 GPA. 
• Must also have leadership qualities.

• Must be in high school, graduating in 2024.

6. Davidson Institution Fellows Scholarships

$10,000,$25,000, and $50,000 are awarded to students who have performed well and accomplished a good piece of work. 

• You must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. 
• No minimum age eligibility is required. 
• The application process must be nominated by at least 2 people.

7. The Carson Scholars Fund

The Carson Scholars award an amount of $1,000.

• A minimum 3.75 GPA is required for eligibility.

8. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship

 award amount.

 A $ 7,500 scholarship is awarded to college students and juniors. 

• You must be a U.S. citizen with a minimum of 3.0 GPA. 
• Your goal must be to graduate in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. A
•  Goldwater Campus representative must nominate you for the scholarship. 
• You also have to submit transcripts and recommendation letters with research essays. 

The last Friday of January each year is the deadline for application.

9. Cameron Impact Scholarship

A merit scholarship of 4 years is awarded to the student. It covers full tuition fees, fees, and books of the college or universities they are studying in.

• A minimum of 3.7 GPA is required. 
• You must have qualities to have an impact on the global community. You must have a positive impact in and after college.

Applications start from 1st February 2024 for 2025 classes.

10.  The Equitable Excellence Scholarship

This merit-based scholarship program has replaced the AXA Achievement Scholarship.

Amount Award

• The authorized distribution for new awards is up to $750,000, with 100 renewable awards of $5,000 each. 
• 100 one-time awards of $2,500 each. 
• The top 100 applicants receive renewable awards for up to four years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned. 
• The next 100 applicants receive non-renewable awards. 
• A $500 gift card will be provided to each recipient’s teacher of choice.
• High School seniors in the 50 US states, DC, or Puerto Rico are encouraged to enroll in an accredited college or university for the upcoming academic year. 
• They must demonstrate ambition and self-drive, provide a release to publicize their achievements, and have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 
• They must also provide photographs for program promotion and information.

• The prize for the Junior category and subject category is a scholarship of $2000 for attending any John Locke Institution program.
• For receiving the prize the winners are called for an academic conference and an award dinner. But these are paid.
• An e-certificate is given to the winners who are unable to attend. Others who attend the ceremony get a signed copy of the certificate. 
• The overall best essay winner gets a fellowship with US $10,000 for attending summer school for a year or more or getting courses for the year.

• Must be U.S.-based citizens.

• The award for the first-place winners is a $1000 scholarship. 
• The first-place winners also get free registration along with two nights lodging for the Annual General Meeting.
• The second-place winner gets a $500 scholarship.

This scholarship is fully sponsored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) for high school seniors planning to pursue sports-related fields in college. 

The scholarship provides a $5,000 tuition scholarship annually to Black American students preparing to coach in the Strength & Conditioning profession.

• A current student with Black American heritage must complete the application.
• Applicant must enroll in a major in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Strength and Conditioning, or similar, to become a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the collegiate or professional level. 
• The applicant must not be a current member of the NSCA Foundation Board of Directors, Scholarship Committee, or an affiliate employee.

2. National Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship

4. Cooke College Scholarship Program

The Cooke College Scholarship Program is available to high school seniors planning to pursue an undergraduate degree after graduation. Students must demonstrate financial need to qualify, with a maximum family income of $95,000. The program also requires students to have a 3.5 GPA or higher.

The program awards up to $55,000 annually, depending on the cost of tuition and other scholarships that the student has received. Only those planning to attend college full-time are eligible.

5. QuestBridge National College Match

This scholarship program is designed for low-income high-school seniors who demonstrate financial need to cover college tuition. The QuestBride Match Scholarship offers recipients a four-year scholarship worth over $200,000. The scholarship program may also include matching students with other types of financial aid like grants and work-study.

Students must attend one of the program’s partner institutions, which include Brown University, Yale, Stanford and more. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply.

This scholarship from the College Board is more like a lottery drawing than a traditional scholarship. There are two types of drawings: one for $500 and one for $40,000.

The Engebretson Foundation provides scholarships to high school seniors attending a four-year college.

In addition to demonstrating financial need, you must score a 28 on the ACT or a 1240 on the SAT, and have a 3.75 GPA or be in the top 5% of your graduating class. A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is also required to qualify.

9. Bryan Cameron Education Foundation

The Bryan Cameron Education Foundation offers four-year, full-tuition scholarships to students who demonstrate excellence in leadership, community service, extracurricular activities and academics. Between 10 and 15 deserving students are selected annually.

Students must have a 3.7 GPA and be U.S. citizens. High school seniors planning to attend a four-year college can apply for this scholarship. You must submit two letters of recommendation and a transcript.

10. Unigo $10K Scholarship

While many of the above-mentioned scholarships have high standards and strict application requirements, the Unigo $10K Scholarship is much easier to apply for. Students must write a 250-word essay answering the question, “Would you rather be smart, funny or rich?”

Only legal U.S. residents can apply, but there are no GPA requirements.

Can a Scholarship Affect Your Financial Aid?

External scholarships, which aren’t offered by your institution, can reduce your financial aid award from your school. If your total aid amount including scholarships, institutional aid and government funding exceeds your calculated need by $300, the government may reduce your need-based aid amount.

What is Atlas Shrugged?

The astounding story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world—and did.

Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is unlike any other book you have ever read. It is a mystery story, not about the murder of a man’s body, but about the murder—and rebirth—of man’s spirit.

How It Works

Every three months there is a new seasonal entry round, with its own unique essay prompt. You may compete in any or all of these entry rounds.

The top three essays from each season will be awarded a cash prize. The first-place essay from each season will advance to compete for the annual grand prize.

The first-place essay from each season will be eligible to contend for the annual first-place title, with the opportunity to secure a grand prize of $25,000.

Pay attention to the details, such as using proper spelling and grammar, submitting all required materials, and following instructions. We recommend that you plan your essay. Most scholarship applications ask for an essay – either on a provided topic or a motivational essay in which you explain why you deserve the scholarship based on your goals for the future. 3. Prepare well for video submissions: If your application process requires a video recording or an interview we recommend that you prepare and practice before. Your goal is to attend the college of your dreams, but you’ve started to discover all the expenses you’ll be responsible for when you do . College tuition, living expenses, books, supplies, the list can go on and on and can be overwhelming.

Scholarships are essentially gifts. For the most part, they don't need to be repaid. Many of them are out there, offered by schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, local community organizations, religious groups, and professional and social groups.

Go For Broke Announces Scholarships for High School, College Students

The Go For Broke National Education Center’s (GFBNEC) Legacy Scholarship program invites high school and college students to explore and analyze the legacy of the Japanese American soldiers of WWII, its impact on the contemporary themes of social justice, discrimination, civil liberties, and democracy and the challenges faced by minority groups during times of conflict.

This year’s theme, “Reflection and Introspection,” correlates to GFBNEC’s newest NextGen initiative, the National Torchbearer Program, which seeks to share the Go For Broke spirit and soldiers’ legacy with younger, more diverse audiences across the nation. Essay, poetry, or creative submissions will be accepted from current high school and college (undergraduate/graduate) students. Scholarships will be awarded to the 1st Place ($1,000); 2nd Place ($500); and 3rd Place ($250) winners in each category.

Submit a 400-500 word essay, a work of poetry (two-typed pages or less) or creative project* on one of the following topics:

• Privilege, Positionality, and Power — How does our nation continue to grapple with contemporary issues of privilege, position, and power? Offer insights on your role in addressing these dynamics.
• Emotions and Engagement, How Our Emotions Shape Conversations — How would you balance family input and your friends’ advice? Define your concept of proving loyalty and being a “good American.”
• From Hate to Hope: Uniqueness & Intersections: Anti-Asian Hate, BLM, Anti-Semitism, Homophobia — Examine how the Go For Broke spirit and the legacy of Japanese American veterans can promote racial tolerance at both individual and collective levels.

*A submission for the creative project category may include a video, music, fine art piece or other creative mediums that connect the GFBNEC legacy to one of the topics listed above. AWF gratefully acknowledges the 2024 High School Literary Arts Awards Judges:

Chair Of The High School Literary Arts Awards Judges: Dr. Susie Paul , a longtime resident of Montgomery, taught American literature and writing at Auburn University Montgomery for over 20 years. Now retired, she is a member of the boards of the Alabama Writers’ Forum and Nora’s Playhouse South. Her work has appeared in The Georgia Review , Kalliope , Negative Capability , Earth’s Daughters , The Village Rambler , Alimentum , and other journals. Her poetry collection The Whited Air: Mary Paul in Winter was published in 2021 by Finishing Line Press. Dr. Paul screens the poetry category and believes in the power and promise of young writers.

Literary Magazine : James M. Hilgartner has published in a number of literary journals and has twice been awarded the Fellowship in Literature from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Since 2015 he has served as Fiction Editor of THAT Literary Review (now Thirteen Bridges Review www.thirteenbridgesreview.com ). He retired as Professor of English at Huntingdon College in 2023.

Creative Nonfiction: Richard K. Evans is the Executive Director of the Alabama Writers’ Forum and the author of MOVE: An American Religion (Oxford University Press, 2020). He holds a PhD in History from Temple University.

Fiction : Kent Quaney is the author of the award-winning novel, One Breath from Drowning (University of Wisconsin Press, 2022). His short fiction has appeared in Literally Stories, Rum Punch Press, Chelsea Station, riverSedge and Polari, among other journals. He studied creative writing at the University of Sydney and the University of Southern Mississippi and is currently Assistant Professor and Creative Writing Coordinator at Auburn University at Montgomery and Editor of Thirteen Bridges Review www.thirteenbridgesreview.com .

Poetry : Sue Brannon Walker (M.Ed. MA, Ph.D, Tulane University) is Professor Emerita at the University of South Alabama where she taught for 35 years. She is a former Poet Laureate of Alabama and the author of 20 books. In March 2024 was inducted into the University of Alabama College of Education Hall of Fame. She has published hundreds of poems and articles. She currently teaches a creative writing class at the Mobile Botanical Gardens in Mobile and is the editor and publisher of Negative Capability Press.

Poetry: Kathleen (Kate) Duthu teaches AWF’s Writing Our Stories program to boys and girls at the juvenile detention center in Mobile County. She is a former criminal prosecutor and family law attorney and has a M.A. in English with a concentration in creative writing from the University of South Alabama. She is also a former editor at Negative Capability Press. Her poetry has won recent awards from the Alabama State Poetry Society and Alabama Writers’ Cooperative and has been published in The Oracle and Emerald Coast Review .

Senior Portfolio Scholarship : Donna Estill is Dean of Humanities & Social Sciences at Calhoun Community College. Estill has taught writing and literature to several generations of students in Arkansas, Kansas, and Alabama. She served as the Director and Assistant Director of the Alabama Center for Literary Arts in Monroeville, organized the Alabama Writers Symposium, and served as Humanities Advisor for the Symposium. She serves on the board of the Alabama Writers’ Forum.

Local news | kingston library offers two scholarships to kingston high seniors.

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Kingston Library Martin Laforse Memorial Scholarship Fund will offer two $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Kingston High School seniors, according to an announcement.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarship can receive an application at the school’s Guidance Office. Applicants are required to submit an essay in 500 words or less, reflecting on how a reading or library experience affected their life.

According to the announcement, scholarships will be awarded based not only on the quality of the essay but on the applicant’s current academic standing, as well as financial need and a letter of recommendation. Scholarship recipients will be announced during an award ceremony at Kingston High in early June.

The scholarship was formed in 2007 after the death of Martin Laforse, a long-time professor and trustee of the Board of Directors at Kingston Library.

Applications are due no later than Friday, April 12.

Regions Riding Forward® Scholarship Contest

You could win an $8,000 college scholarship

For the opportunity to win an $8,000 scholarship, submit a video or written essay about an individual you know personally (who lives in your community) who has inspired you and helped you build the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

The details

The 2024 Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest consists of four (4) separate Quarterly Contests - one for each calendar quarter of 2024. Regions is awarding four $8,000 scholarships through each Quarterly Contest.

Each Quarterly Contest has its own separate entry period, as provided in the chart below.

The entry deadline for each Quarterly Contest is 11:59:59 PM Central Time on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date (set forth in the chart above).

No purchase or banking relationship required.

Regions believes in supporting the students whose passion and actions every day will continue to make stories worth sharing. That’s why we have awarded over $1 million in total scholarships to high school and college students.

How to enter, 1. complete an online quarterly contest application.

Enter the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest by completing a Quarterly Contest application.  The second Quarterly Contest runs from April 1, 2024 through June 30, 2024. Complete and save all requested information. 

2. Prepare your Written Essay or Video Essay

For each Quarterly Contest, the topic of your Written Essay or Video Essay (your “Essay Topic”) must be an individual you know personally, who lives in your community. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must address how the individual you have selected as your Essay Topic has inspired you and helped you build the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

Written Essay and Video Essay submissions must meet all of the requirements described in the contest Official Rules. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must be (i) in English, (ii) your own original work, created solely by you (and without the use of any means of artificial intelligence (“AI”)), and (iii) the exclusive property of you alone.

Written Essays must be 500 words or less. You can write your Written Essay directly in the application, or you can copy and paste it into the appropriate area in the application form.

Video Essay submissions must be directly uploaded to the contest application site. Video Essays must be no more than 3 minutes in length and no larger than 1 GB. Only the following file formats are accepted: MP4, MPG, MOV, AVI, and WMV. Video Essays must not contain music of any kind nor display any illegal, explicit, or inappropriate material, and Video Essays must not be password protected or require a log-in/sign-in to view. You must upload your Video Essay to the application, and you may not submit your Video Essay in DVD or other physical form. (Video Essays submitted via mail will not be reviewed or returned.)

Tips to Record Quality Videos on a Smartphone:

• Don’t shoot vertical video. Computer monitors have landscape-oriented displays, so shoot your video horizontally.
• Use a tripod. Even small movements can make a big difference when editing.
• Don’t use zoom. If you need to get a close shot of the subject, move closer as zooming can cause pixilation.
• Use natural lighting. Smartphone lighting can wash out your video.

3. Review and submit your Quarterly Contest application

Review your information on your Quarterly Application (and check the spelling of a Written Essay) and submit your entry by 11:59:59 p.m. Central Time on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date. The second Quarterly Contest period end date is June 30, 2024.

4. Await notification

Winning entries are selected by an independent panel of judges who are not affiliated with Regions. If your entry is selected as a Quarterly Contest winner, you will need to respond to ISTS with the required information.

Eligibility

For purposes of this contest:

• The “Eligible States” are defined as the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
• An “accredited college” is defined as a nonprofit, two- or four-year college or university located within one of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia.

To be eligible to enter this contest and to win an award in a Quarterly Contest, at the time of entry, you must:

• Be a legal U.S. resident of one of the Eligible States.
• Be age 16 or older.
• Have at least one (1) year (or at least 18 semester hours) remaining before college graduation.
• If you are not yet in college, begin your freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2025 – 2026 college academic school year.
• As of your most recent school enrollment period, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in school (and if no GPA is provided at school, be in “good standing” or the equivalent thereof in school).

Contrary to popular myths, not all scholarships are need-based or require a high GPA. Many scholarships are tailored to specific student populations, such as part-time students, returning adults or students interested in a specific major.

This Springfield senior met President Biden, watched State of the Union from White House

A quest for a college scholarship led to a Springfield high school senior meeting President Joe Biden and watching his State of the Union address on March 7 from inside the White House.

Elana Noor Hadi, who will graduate from Central High School in May, admitted she didn't know much about the U.S. Senate Youth Program when it first popped up in her search results. But it carried a financial award of $10,000, which prompted a closer look.

She immediately requested a letter of recommendation from the principal, which was required, and set aside time to write the essay.

"I put a lot of effort in because the program looked pretty neat. It said all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., and, of course, $10,000, so I was really excited about that," she recalled. "It seemed pretty competitive so I was surprised when I got the call back for an interview in Jefferson City."

Hadi drove to the state capitol in late October, where she devoted much of her interview to talking about her love of politics, American history and the U.S. Constitution.

As it turned out, she was a perfect fit. At Central, Hadi is president of the student body, the Civics and Constitution Club and the Future Business Leaders of America. She co-founded the high school's Key Club as a sophomore.

The daughter of Dr. Bassam Hadi and Laila Hadi, she was one of 17 Central seniors with a perfect GPA celebrated at Springfield Public Schools' annual Recognition of Scholastic Excellence, or ROSE, banquet . She was also involved in tennis, robotics and band. She volunteers extensively.

She worked as a tutor at Kumon Education and she also provides private tutoring in the fall and interned this spring with the Arab-American Business and Professional Association.

Only two students from Missouri were selected. Hadi and Andrew Puthumana, a senior at Rockhurst High School, a private school in Kansas City, were invited to join U.S. Sens. Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt to represent Missouri at the 62nd annual U.S. Senate Youth Program week in Washington, D.C.

In all, 104 high school students were selected to participate in the event aimed at helping to increase the level of understanding about the three branches of government and how they interact. The scholarships and the trips were paid for by the Hearst Foundations.

The trip included meetings with senators, the president, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies and others. They visited many notable spots, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives.

"It was jam-packed," she said. "The whole week had a very big focus on polarization and bipartisan views."

Hadi said there were a lot of tours and speakers. One standout was Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who is serving as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He had been part of the same program as Hadi, as a high school senior.

"The highlight was the Senate reception, where we got to meet our state senators, which was really nice, and take pictures of them," she said. "I saw Bernie Sanders in person."

Another highlight was getting to watch the State of the Union at a popcorn and chocolate watch party inside the White House. "After that, the First Lady and President came and talked to us," she said.

Hadi said the president talked about how he got into politics and how important it is for young people to participate in the process.

"I didn't expect it to be so impactful. I have always considered politics but more as a maybe ... It put the 'why politics is important' in my brain," she said.

Hadi said she was moved by hearing from U.S. representatives and senators about why they got involved in political life and what they hope to accomplish.

"Before that week, I didn't really understand the clarity and the focus on the future that all these representatives of our government have. They are all trying, in their own way, to focus on building our nation and sustaining it for years to come," she said. "It was really interesting to see the behind-the-scenes and the human side and how they are trying to help our nation."

Hadi, who planned to major in mathematics, said the experience provided a lot of fodder for other options, especially public policy or political science.

She was still deciding where to go to college. She has been accepted at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Indiana-Bloomington, and Southern Methodist University.

"I felt like a lot of the (student) delegates left knowing exactly what they wanted to do because a speaker resonated with them. But, if anything, it made me more indecisive because a lot of them resonated with me," she said. "I was thinking I could see myself in so many positions I hadn't considered before. It was more eye-opening."

Teen columnists wanted for 2024-25 school year

Apr. 2—The Post Bulletin is accepting applications from high school students interested in being a teen columnist for the 2024-25 school year. All high school students in southeastern Minnesota are eligible to be considered.

What do columnists do? Teens write 500- to 700-word personal essays or columns published Tuesdays in the Post Bulletin Life section. Typically, 10 teens are selected and scheduled to write columns once every five weeks.

What do you need? Send your name, mailing address, email address, phone number, year in high school, high school you attend and age.

Please include a cover letter telling us why you want to be a teen columnist and why you should be selected. Also include three examples that show your writing ability.

Deadline? July 15.

High school seniors pursuing degrees in engineering may be eligible for the K. William Wiseman Engineering Scholarship at the Maine Community Foundation.

The fund supports students graduating from Maine high schools attending an accredited college or university. The school does not have to be in Maine. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 1.
