By nature, resume writing needs to be high-touch to be effective, which takes time.

Keep in mind that the value-add of working with a resume writer is not only their writing ability but also their ability to ask the right questions.

A service that relies on both written background materials and a phone consultation is more likely to result in a well-written, achievement-based document .

If you are only looking for copy editing or feedback on your resume (not an end-to-end rewrite), you can expect to pay less.

Should I pay someone to write my resume? How much should I spend?

Think of hiring a resume writer as an investment in your career. If you are having a hard time crafting your resume, are in a time crunch, or could use the help of a 3 rd party to help you identify what is most important to highlight, working with a resume writer can be a great option.

How much you spend on your resume will depend on how much you value quality and your budget.

We'll argue that it's worth spending about 1-2% of your annual salary on a quality resume.

To put this amount into perspective, consider that wealth managers charge (at least) a 1% fee to manage your investment portfolio, which typically provides an 8-10% annual return.

Would it be reasonable to invest 1% of your annual salary into getting a document that could very well open the door to a higher salary?

For either investment, results aren't guaranteed.

However, they are likely based on historical performance.

Simply put, if a writer charges under $200 for your resume, they would be making around minimum wage after taxes, business expenses, and marketing costs are factored into account.

It is just not a feasible pricing model.

If this business model works, it's probably because the company is either cutting corners or outsourcing its writing internationally:

Some resume writers reuse significant portions of your existing content and/or do not provide a one-on-one consultation. Instead, all of your communication with your writer will be via email.

If you would like to work with a resume writer but don’t mind putting in additional legwork on your end, a lower-priced service could be an option.

However, if you are looking for a truly bespoke service that will add value by helping you brainstorm content and rewrite your entire document from the ground up, you may be left disappointed.

Outsourcing

Given their fee structure, many low-priced resume writing services outsource their writing to non-native English speakers abroad. While we don’t view this to be an ethical practice, it is an unfortunate reality in the industry.

If you come across a company that is quite inexpensive and does not allow a phone consultation, it could potentially be outsourcing its writing abroad.

When choosing a resume writer, consider whether they have relevant certifications, positive reviews, strong writing samples, and have worked with clients of your experience level.

Consider the following questions:

• Is the company or writer a member of the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches ( PARWCC ) or National Résumé Writers' Association ( NRWA )?
• Do they have positive reviews from previous clients on third-party review sites such as Trustpilot and Google? Are there any “red flags” that clients consistently mention?

The average cost of a resume writer is $527, based on data from 90 professional resume writers. The cost of resume writing does vary significantly, from below $200 to multiple thousands of dollars. For example, we saw professional resume writing priced at $2,275, $2,450 and $3,000. However, these higher prices are typically reserved for high-end or executive resume writing. 

Deals can be found if you’re at the earlier stages of your career (not an executive, manager, etc.) and looking for budget resume writing services.

If you’re looking for a good deal on a resume writing service, you may be able to find a very skilled resume writer who simply lives and works in a less expensive city/state, and therefore charges less. For example, the typical resume writer in Milwaukee is going to be charging a lot less than in New York, even with more experience.

Here are five little-known facts to know before using a resume writing service:

1. The process may take longer than you expect

It's natural to think that if you're forking up money for a resume service do all the heavy lifting, things will be done before you know it. But writing a quality resume takes time, especially with so many people on the job hunt today. Many resume writers require about week or longer, depending on factors like how much revision is needed, their bandwidth, or your job experience level. In some ways, using a resume service actually means you're prioritizing quality over speed, so keep this in mind if application deadlines are on the horizon.

2. The writers aren't always as qualified as you think

Many services offer unbelievably low rates — but only because they need to in order to sustain a profitable business model. This is usually a red flag. More often than not, a low rate means you're getting an inexperienced writer who is willing to be compensated for much less. (Believe it or not, some services even hire a fresh-faced grad straight out of college.)

Services typically charge anywhere from $100 to $400, depending on how advanced your resume needs to be. Another trap to avoid is the "$25 resume and a 24-hour turnaround time." Remember, the writer's job is to create a compelling document that's more than just a history of your career, and if they're not spending more than a few days on your resume, expect to get something very crappy.

To avoid getting an inexperienced writer, do your research on the service. It also helps to call them to ask for samples and confirm that your assigned writer has had some sort of formal training on resume writing, especially in your industry.

3. The process is not as easy as you may think

A common misconception about resume writing services is that they do all the work for you. But the reality is that they can't even start working on your resume until you've filled out an extensive form detailing all the necessary information about your work history, skills and professional achievements.

Also expect to do a lot of back-and-forth collaboration with your writer via phone and email. And remember, you'll have to offer them feedback once they send you their first draft. It may take a few rounds before you agree on a final version.

4. You might be misled if you don't read the fine print

Many services provide some sort of guarantee, whether it's doubling your interviews , offering unlimited revisions or giving you a refund if you're unhappy with the turnout. While these promises may sound reassuring, it's important to read the fine print, as these guarantees are often not as amazing as they sound.

For example, an "interview guarantee" usually means you'll get a chance to have your resume rewritten, not that you'll somehow get an interview no matter what. However, if the company did a poor job writing your resume the first time, chances are the quality won't improve the second time around. Similarly, a promise of "unlimited revisions" is often void after a predetermined deadline has passed.

5. You probably don't need one

Hiring a professional resume writing service isn't always the best choice for everyone. It really depends on how much experience you have and what you're looking for. If you're unsure, consider the questions below:

• Are you qualified for the position you want next? A resume writer isn't a magician — he or she can't make you stand out if you don't have the skills to begin with.
• Are you looking for a raise or promotion? Hiring a professional writer is a good idea if you're looking for more money, responsibilities and a higher title. Since there's a lot of competition out there, you'll want your resume to stand out and use all the help you can get.
• Do you make more than $40,000 a year? It's important to consider where you're putting your money and whether it's a smart financial decision. If you've just graduated and are applying to a very entry-level job, you won't have a lot of experience to deck out your resume — and that's okay.
• Are you good at writing? Resume writing is, in its purest form, a lot of writing. You don't have to be an incredibly talented writer, but if you have low confidence in your skills, especially when it comes to elaborating on your skills, it's best to have someone else do the work for you.
