NCERT's new Class 6 social science textbook, released on Friday, talks about India's own prime meridian existing much before the Greenwich meridian and passing through Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, the 'Madhya Rekha'.

The new book also does away with any mention of caste-based discrimination, tweaks BR Ambedkar's discrimination experiences, and refers to the Harappan civilisation as 'Sindhu-Sarasvati'.

Moreover, it does away with a majority of information on ancient Indian kingdoms, with just a single-word mention of Ashoka, cuts down geography concepts, and features content from the Upanishads and the Mahabharata.

CBSE students of Classes 3 and 6 are getting new NCERT textbooks reflecting the latest National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, which are set to be used this from academic year onwards.

MADHYA REKHA: INDIA'S PRIME MERIDIAN

One of the noteworthy additions is the concept of 'madhya rekha', India's prime meridian, which predated the Greenwich Meridian.

The textbook explains, "The Greenwich Meridian is not the first prime meridian. There were others in the past. In fact, many centuries before Europe, India had a prime meridian of its own! It was called madhya rekha (or 'middle line') and passed through the city of Ujjayini (today Ujjain), which was a reputed centre for astronomy over many centuries."

THE SINDHU-SARASVATI CIVILISATION

The textbook has renamed the Harappan civilisation as the Sindhu-Sarasvati or Indus-Sarasvati civilisation, placing a strong emphasis on the Sarasvati River.

"Archaeologists gave this civilisation several names - 'Indus,' 'Harappan,' 'Indus-Sarasvati,' or 'Sindhu-Sarasvati' civilisation. We will use all these terms. Its inhabitants are called 'Harappans.' It is one of the oldest civilisations in the world," the textbook notes.

The river Sarasvati is frequently mentioned in the chapter 'Beginnings of Indian Civilisation' unlike in previous editions, highlighting its importance in ancient Indian history. It also notes the mention of the river in the Rig Veda.

The textbook states that the Sarasvati basin included major cities of the civilisation -- Rakhigarhi and Ganweriwala -- along with smaller cities and towns."

DIALING DOWN INFORMATION ON THE CASTE SYSTEM

The new textbook has reduced references to the caste system to a great extent. While it details mention of the Vedas, it fails to mention that women and Shudras were not allowed to study them.

"Many professions are mentioned in the Vedic texts, such as agriculturist, weaver, potter, builder, carpenter, healer, dancer, barber, priest, etc.," the book mentions, omitting previous descriptions of social restrictions.

"Some priests divided people into four groups called varnas.... Shudras could not perform any rituals. Often women were grouped with Shudras. Both women and Shudras were not allowed to study the Vedas," the old textbook stated.

LESS EXPLORATION OF ANCIENT INDIAN KINGDOMS

The revised textbook has significantly cut down on the content about ancient Indian kingdoms.

The older textbook had four chapters which are now deleted. They included narratives about the reigns of Ashoka and Chandragupta Maurya, the influence of Chanakya and his Arthashastra, as well as information on the Gupta, Pallava, and Chalukya dynasties, and the contributions of Kalidasa.

OTHER CONTENT REMOVED

Additionally, a chapter in the old book titled 'Villages, Towns and Trade' has been truncated.

Mentions of the historic iron pillar at Mehrauli near Qutub Minar, which likely dates back to the Gupta dynasty, have been removed. Additionally, references to the Sanchi Stupa, the rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram, and the Ajanta cave paintings have also been dropped.

NCERT DIRECTOR'S TAKE ON THE NCERT TEXTBOOK REVISION

"We have focused on the 'big ideas', combining inputs from history, geography, political science, and economics," says NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani in the new textbook's introduction.

In June, Saklani told PTI that references to the Gujarat riots and Babri Masjid demolition were modified to avoid teaching content that "can create violent and depressed citizens."

He questioned whether schools should teach young children about riots , suggesting such topics are better understood when they grow up. "The hue and cry about the changes is irrelevant," he added.

He had made these statements after a row had erupted over the Class 12 political science textbook referring to the Babri Masjid only as a "three-domed structure," and shortening the Ayodhya section from four to two pages, focusing instead on the Supreme Court judgement that allowed the Ram temple's construction.

"The purpose of our education is not to create violent citizens... depressed citizens. Hatred and violence are not subjects of teaching; they should not be the focus of our textbooks," Saklani stated at the time.

Responding to accusations of saffronisation, Saklani explained, "If something has become irrelevant... it will have to be changed."

"Updating textbooks is a global practice; it is in the interest of education. Revising textbooks is an annual exercise. Whatever is changed is decided by subject and pedagogy experts. I do not dictate or interfere in the process; there is no imposition from the top. There are no attempts to saffronise curriculum; everything is based on facts and evidence," he added.

Cathay doesn’t mess around with luxury, and its first-class product already commands plenty of cachet; expect this to be one of the most sought-after ways to fly once the full details are released in the coming months.

Lufthansa Allegris

Seats vary in Lufthansa’s Allegris business class cabin.

Rather than redesign the front of the plane alone, Lufthansa has rethought its entire interior, from first through to economy; the tailored Allegris design is already featured on long-haul A350-900s and is coming soon to the carrier’s new Boeing 787-9s. In business class, the innovative design includes cooling and heating features in the seats and an embedded tablet display (rather than endless buttons) to adjust all the ambient options like temperature and seat position. There are also more classic touches, such as sliding privacy doors, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless chargers and all-aisle access (correcting a common criticism of Lufthansa’s current cabin configuration).

Even within the business-class cabin, there is variation. Some seats have additional legroom, while others have longer lie-flat beds; the descriptions of each are available when choosing your specific seat assignment. Some of these options come with ancillary fees: Those in the front row, for instance, have extra space and storage areas, but at an upcharge. No other airline has worked to monetise the business-class cabin in this way before, and the fees will vary depending on the length of flight, demand and elite status – with some of Lufthansa’s top members able to “upgrade” within business class for free.

If a stratified business class feels overwhelming, look out for Lufthansa’s most luxurious First Class Suite Plus seats, which the airline is rolling out as it takes possession of its latest A350s. They’ll have double beds and ceiling-height walls with sliding doors; measuring about 3 feet, the seats will be some of the widest in the skies, and when they extend to more than 7 feet long as a lie-flat bed, they’re fit for even NBA players.

On five-hour flights from Phoenix or Los Angeles to Honolulu, passengers in the front of the plane typically need to step over their neighbours to get up for a stretch or a bathroom break. Not any more. The long-awaited Leihoku suites on Hawaiian Airlines’ new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners are laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration, so each seat has direct aisle access; better yet, each is outfitted with sliding doors for privacy. In the centre are couples’ suites that have a partial divider – just in case you need a break from your travel companion.

Each of the new business class seats will have direct aisle access.

The seats are highly adjustable, letting you raise the leg rest without reclining the back, for instance. And winging your way to paradise is more practical now, too: the seats add a small closet with a vanity mirror (in addition to a water bottle cubby), plus a do-not-disturb sign and wireless charging pockets by your shoulder. Also new are Hawaiian design flourishes, like a starry night skylight feature that alludes to Polynesian wayfinding traditions. If a merger with Alaska Airlines goes through as expected, the seats could come to even longer-haul routes in the next year.

Air India Business Class

Air India’s new business-class seats are light years ahead of its existing business-class product.

The refreshed carrier’s new Airbus A350s, originally destined for Russia’s Aeroflot before they were diverted by sanctions, are light years ahead of its existing business-class product (which can have middle seats in a 2-3-2 configuration). The planes offer sliding doors for privacy, direct aisle access for all passengers, a mattress pad for the fully flat seat, a personal coat closet and access to a private bar at the back of the cabin. A $400 million investment to upgrade business class on the A350s is part of the airline’s larger brand overhaul – expect to see these on routes from Delhi to Dubai and to London Heathrow.

American passengers, too, will benefit from sliding privacy doors if they nab a new Flagship Business seat, which will come to freshly delivered Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR planes in 2025. Because of production delays, the expected routes on the upgraded Dreamliners are still to be determined; the Airbus planes will likely debut first on flights from eastern US hubs to Western Europe. By 2026 the new business class suite should roll out across more of the airline’s long-haul network. These changes will increase the number of premium cabin seats across the fleet by more than 45 per cent.

Seats in the new business class cabins will have sliding privacy doors.

The features here will be familiar: all-aisle access in either 1-2-1 or 1-1 configurations, ample storage space and large entertainment screens, plus sliding panels in the centre seats that open up, so couples can see each other.

Gryphon Rider Sets Available

With the launch of the pre-expansion content update, players who have pre-purchased the Heroic or Epic Edition of The War Within will be able to accept the quest, "The Stormrider’s Bond" from Kurdran Wildhammer in Valdrakken. Completing this quest will reward three new alternate color transmog armor sets: Frenzied Deep, Shocking Silver, and Sparking Champion Stormrider’s Attire.

After completing Kurden’s quest, he’ll have another  quest for you called "A Sacred Connection." Completing this quest will provide upgraded versions of these sets: Frenzied Deep, Shocking Silver, and Sparking Champion’s Stormrider’s Attire.

Players who have not begun these quests before the launch of The War Within will be able to pick up a quest from Stormrider Bruelda in Dornogal.

As the Nephalem reflect on Sanctuary's history, instruments of power from a bygone era resurface. These ethereal memories will grant those persistent enough to search for them unimaginable power. Legends of the past will manifest once more in the present, and you must decide how to best use these gifts—for ethereal power is fugacious by nature, and will soon return to being no more than a myth.

For this seasonal theme, we were inspired to reimagine how Ethereal items could manifest in Diablo III, with 21 iconic weapons making a return from Diablo II. In Season 32, Ethereals are rare, powerful, and fleeting items.

Season 32 reintroduces Ethereals , a weapon-type that players will be able to acquire and hunt for in their upcoming seasonal journey. Ethereals will roll a powerful set of affixes, a random Class Weapon Legendary Power and a random Class Passive Power . Ethereals will have unique icons, names, item types, and sounds originally found in Diablo II. For additional details on Ethereals, check out the list below:

• Ethereals are account bound and can only be dropped by monsters, chests, and destructibles, but do not require your character to be Level 70 in order to drop. Ethereals cannot be acquired through Kanai's Cube or from Kadala.
• Ethereal rarity drop rate is set between Ancient and Primal items.
• There are 3 unique Ethereals per class. Each Ethereal has fixed affixes and rolls one random Legendary Weapon power and one random Class Passive Skill.
• Only one Ethereal can be equipped at a time.
• Ethereals ignore item durability loss.
• Legendary Powers and Class Passive Skills rolled on Ethereals do not stack with the same power equipped through Kanai's Cube, Items or Skills.
• Ethereals cannot be Enchanted, Transmogrified, Dyed, Reforged, or traded.
• Ethereals can be augmented.
• Collecting all 21 Ethereals during the season will reward players with the Feat of Strength, Ethereal Recollection. Players who accomplish this will have all Ethereal transmogrify options available for future seasonal and non-seasonal play.
• Ethereals only drop in Seasonal play and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends.

Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 32, this means awards originally available from Season 8 are returning to the Season Journey.

However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. In addition to the Boots and Pants slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that smolder with demonic fires of the Burning Hells. If you’ve been diligently slaying demons for the past few Seasons and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of 5:

• Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within 5 minutes.
• Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55.
• All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season.
• Warm Thoughts: Kill Izual at Level 70 in under 15 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty.
• Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault.
• Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian.
• Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a level 50+ gem.
• Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item.

For Curses!/Stars Align , pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at Level 70 on Torment X or higher. For the fiercest demon slayers, Boss Mode/Worlds Apart is a speed challenge where you’ll need to eliminate the following bosses at Level 70 and Torment X in under twenty minutes:

• The Butcher
• Zoltun Kulle
• Queen Araneae
• Siegebreaker Assault Beast

Finally, Years of War/Dynasty will be a great test for those who enjoy mastering various Class Sets, and if that’s not enough, Masters of the Universe/Masters of Sets will challenge your tactical understanding of Set Dungeons.

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey (courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift) have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works:

Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely!

The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character.

UCLA Football: DeShaun Foster Freezes Early During Big Ten Media Day

The Big Ten's 18 teams joined together in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Big Ten Media Day. The teams discussed the details of the upcoming season.

UCLA and USC are the two newest additions to the Big Ten after announcing their departure from the Pac-12 conference in August 2023.

The Bruins' newly hired head coach, former running backs coach DeShaun Foster, did not start his Big Ten coaching career on the right foot. He stuttered and froze during his on-stage opening statement. Despite being a UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer, Foster did not seem to know much about the Bruins' football team.

UCLA hired a new head coach following the resigning of former head coach Chip Kelly, who is now the offensive coordinator for Ohio State. In replacement of Kelly, UCLA brought on former Bruin running back, Deshaun Foster, in February.

Foster played for the Bruins from 1998-2001. Throughout his collegiate career, he set the program rushing record for a true freshman, earning 673 yards.

After his stint at UCLA, Foster was drafted as the 34th overall pick in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. He played in the NFL for seven years. Foster also played for the San Francisco 49ers during his career.

Following his career in the NFL, Foster returned to Westwood as a student assistant for three years. After leaving the Bruins for one season to coach at Texas Tech, he transitioned into the Bruins' running back coach for seven seasons.

Foster made his way back to the NFL as the running back coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. But, he returned to UCLA for the third time to become the Bruins' 19th head coach in program history.

The Bruins will begin their Big Ten season on October 5 against Penn State. Hopefully by then, Foster will have a better understanding of his team.
