They can also apply for doctoral contracts (a three-year funding for a PhD), which are awarded each year by the corresponding Doctoral School board.

Theses can be drafted in French or in a foreign language (notably English) in accordance with terms and conditions set forth by the Doctoral School. Jointly supervised theses are possible with foreign institutes. These are jointly managed on each site.

International collaborations are an integral part of research. Some programs in particular enable the development an international experience in the context of doctoral education.

Published on 4/12/2019 - Updated on 6/03/2024

China Scholarship Council – Sorbonne University

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Sorbonne University have established a collaborative program offering excellent doctoral education to Chinese candidates in all disciplines represented at Sorbonne University. Doctoral candidates are hosted in a laboratory under the supervision of Sorbonne University and receive a scholarship funded by the CSC . This scholarship is for a maximum of 4 years. Its amount is currently 1350 €/month (amount periodically re-evaluated by the CSC). In addition, doctoral candidates will have to pay administrative fees. Candidates having obtained the CSC scholarship are required to commit to returning to China after the defense of the thesis or after a postdoctoral stay abroad (after agreement of the CSC).

Recruitment campaign

It takes place in several stages:

  • A call for doctoral research projects is launched to researchers and academic researchers at Sorbonne University. The doctoral research projects are then validated by the doctoral schools and published.
  • Chinese candidates send their applications to the project leaders , who forward the files of the candidates they have pre-selected to the doctoral schools. The candidates' files are examined by each doctoral school, which may issue a pre-admission letter subject to funding.
  • The list of all candidates pre-selected by the Sorbonne University doctoral schools is sent to the CSC.
  • Candidates must then apply in China on the CSC website . They are evaluated by the Chinese party, which notifies and awards the thesis scholarship if necessary.

Eligibility conditions of candidates

The CSC 2021 is only open to candidates of Chinese nationality who do not have any job outside the Chinese territory at the time of their application . They must demonstrate a very good level of English and, for some fields of humanities and social sciences, a very good level of French (B2 minimum, C1 recommended).

PhD Degrees in Political Science

Political science attempts to analyze and deconstruct government entities and the social structures that they influence. A strong component of the study involves understanding the political behavior of citizens and various philosophical and ethical issues.

France is currently among the 20 best performing countries in terms of the economy due to their excellent results-oriented higher education learning. Most of the courses at universities are offered in the French language. France has 60 public and 100 private universities.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

Ph.D. Admissions

Apply here .

Preparing to Apply

Before starting the application process please read the information about the graduate program requirements  and read our  Frequently Asked Questions . You may also find the Guide to Getting Into Grad School helpful.

The Political Science department recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

All questions regarding graduate admissions should be directed to politicalscience [at] stanford.edu (subject: Admissions%20Enquiry) ( politicalscience[at]stanford[dot]edu ) .

The principal goal of the Stanford Ph.D. program in political science is the training of scholars. Most students who receive doctorates in the program do research and teach at colleges or universities. We offer courses and research opportunities in a wide variety of fields in the discipline, including American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Political Methodology. The program is built around small seminars that analyze critically the literature of a field or focus on a research problem. These courses prepare students for the Ph.D. comprehensive exam requirement within a two-year period and for work on the doctoral dissertation.

Admission to the graduate program in political science is highly selective. About twelve to fifteen students, chosen from a large pool of applicants, enter the program each year. The small size of our student body allows more individual work with members of the faculty than most graduate programs. It also makes possible financial assistance in one form or another to most students admitted to the Ph.D. program.

Media might deepen partisan divides, but we should measure reading habits more carefully before drawing conclusions--and avoid assuming that our own thought processes are the only rational ones.

Does political polarization cause citizens to seek out partisan news sources, or do partisan media push them toward more polarized views? A study coauthored by MIT political science professor Adam Berinsky, postdoc Chloe Wittenberg (PhD '23), and MIT political science professor Teppei Yamamoto, pictured at left, finds that the answer is complicated.

Raise JobSeeker by $17 a day, advisory committee tells government

Jenny Macklin

An expert panel tasked with advising the federal government on income supports says the JobSeeker unemployment payment must be increased by about $17 a day as a "first priority" in next month's budget, arguing any move would have a "negligible" inflationary impact.

The Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee was established in 2022 following negotiations with independent senator David Pocock over unrelated legislation.

It is chaired by former Labor minister Jenny Macklin and includes academics, community sector advocates, business representatives and unions and provides advice ahead of every budget.

In this year's report, the committee said the payments remain too low and have left many to forego essentials.

The federal government announced a $40-per-fortnight base rate increase in last year's budget, but the committee said the rate remained "seriously inadequate".

It found there had been some improvement in the economic security of recipients in the past 12 months following that increase, but it was limited.

The panel appealed for the government to increase JobSeeker and related income supports to 90 per cent of the age pension in next month's budget.

Based on the current rates, that would see the JobSeeker payment for single people with no dependent children increase from just over $54 a day to nearly $72 a day.

Previous committee analysis revealed as of 2019 Australia had the lowest benefits for short-term unemployed people in the OECD.

Increasing payments to 90 per cent of the aged pension would move Australia to the second lowest in the OECD, above New Zealand, the UK and US.

They also recommended a review of indexation arrangements for the payments to apply more consistency and labelled the current method unsatisfactory.

In their report the committee called for the government to outline a time frame for change, if increases are to be staged.

Inflation impact minimal, committee argues

The committee sought analysis of the inflationary impact of its proposal, noting the "heightened concern around inflation in Australia."

This analysis suggested the effect would be "small to negligible".

The committee estimated the cost of the change would be in the order of $4.6 billion a year. The smaller increase delivered in the last federal budget cost $1.3 billion a year.

In a media release, Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth said the advice would be an "important input" to budget deliberations but did not indicate whether it would adopt the recommendations.

"We will always do what we can for people where it is responsible and affordable, and weighed up against other priorities and fiscal challenges," the ministers said.

"We can't fund every good idea and everything we would like to do."

European Union Policy Studies Concentration

James Madison University's M.A. in Political Science is a 10-month program with a concentration in European Union Policy Studies (EUPS). The program is based in Florence, Italy, though all coursework is held in English. While Florence is a global cultural destination, accessible to English speakers, students receive Italian language instruction in the fall at a level corresponding to their proficiency.

While in the program, students conduct applied assignments within their coursework and refine their cross-cultural competencies by working with a dynamic international faculty, by living abroad, and by talking with policy and political practitioners based in Europe and in the United States. These conversations take place in our facilities in Italy and via video conferencing. In addition, students participate in  academic trips to Brussels (in the fall) and Rome (in the spring) in which they meet with various political & policy practitioners in and out of government.

In the summer session, professional development is a key focus as our students hold mock job interviews; create a professional portfolio of policy and political analyses; and conduct either an internship or an applied research project. The EUPS program prepares students for careers in politics and policy, government agencies, policy research & advocacy, government relations, consulting for the private sector, and nonprofit organizations.
