Club presidents facilitate club functions, and create an environment that is fair and a fun experience for all members involved. Club leaders must work hard, present innovative ideas, lead others kindly, and possess organizational skills. As the president, you are responsible for the club and its actions.

Becoming a Good Club President

Step 1 Be a confident...

  • You must be comfortable giving orders and setting a schedule. If there are discrepancies of opinion, it is up to you to make the final decision.
  • You also need to have the confidence to hold your club members accountable to the rules of the club and to deadlines like fee payments.

Step 2 Listen to your club members.

  • When someone comes to talk to you about an issue, take them seriously. If you don't have time to address it right then, let them know. Tell them you'd rather talk about it later when you have more time because you really value what they have to say.
  • The positive interaction of all your club members will create a successful club.
  • Create a democratic decision-making process, rather than overriding opinions of others.

Step 3 Keep your meetings fun.

  • Change up the style of the meeting and the meeting spot.
  • Take time to do purely fun activities with your club members like having a movie or game night or volunteering together.. This will help create friendships within the club.
  • Bring snacks to meetings and take time to play games. Kicking off meetings with an ice breaker can be a good idea.

Leading a Successful Club

Step 1 State your club's purpose.

  • This mission statement should be short and simple.
  • Post it somewhere in your meeting area, and remind members of the statement at each meeting.
  • This will help you club stay defined and improve, no matter what type of club it is.
  • Also, this will give potential new members an accurate idea of what your club is.
  • If you are starting a new school club, find out how this process has to be organized at your school. Many clubs require a teacher/staff member advisor and signatures of students who would be interested in joining.

Step 2 Seek funding.

  • If you're not associated with a school, you may want to consider making your club a non-profit. You should only consider this if your club is raising tens of thousands of dollars per year as this will require significant paper work and cost money. But long-term it can help with avoiding any taxes down the road on income the club generates.
  • Consider fundraising. Activities like a car wash, selling products, or simply starting a donation page can help raise money for your club.
  • You can also charge membership dues and fees that are used to fund the club.

Step 3 Define membership criteria.

  • You may also make ongoing criteria that are necessary to remain a member of the club, such as regular meeting attendance and participation in events or a certain GPA if you are associate with a school.
  • This will also ensure that you have an active club.

Step 4 Recruit members.

  • You'll need marketing. You may want a member of the club devoted to this, but as president this will also be your responsibility to make sure the club is growing.
  • Create a website. This allows potential members to read about your club and contact you with interest.
  • Hold open-house events. Advertise events for potential members to come and see what your club is all about. This is a great way to vet potential members and also showcase what your club can do for them.
  • Ask current members to recruit. They are likely to have circles of friends with similar interests.

Keeping Your Club Organized

Step 1 Delegate club-related tasks.

  • Listen to their ideas, and let people volunteer for tasks they are interested in.
  • Delegating tasks and responsibilities will keep members engaged and invested in the club. [5] X Research source
  • You'll need a treasurer, a secretary, a schedule manager, and a membership manager.

Step 2 Plan...

  • Before each meeting, plan what you will talk about. You should create a meeting agenda, where you outline what is going to be discussed in the meeting and who is going to be speaking on the topic. If you want other officers to speak at a meeting, make sure you discuss it with them before the meeting.

Step 3 Run the meetings with efficiency.

  • You should then have someone delegated to take meeting minutes, or notes on the meeting. This could be you or someone delegated to be the minute-taker.
  • You should review the meeting minutes from the last meeting at the beginning of the meeting and revisit any issues or concerns that were not addressed in the previous meeting.
  • You should then discuss each item on the meeting agenda. Allow for discussion and debate between club members but try to reach a consensus on each issue and move efficiently through each item. At the end of the meeting, you should have an official "end". You may say, "I now end this meeting" or "This meeting is now over."

Step 4 Stay active on social media.

  • Social media is a quick way to send information or invitations to events.
  • Send out e-newsletters with club content, meeting notes, and upcoming events.

About This Article

Ashley Pritchard, MA

Being a club president can be challenging, but if you’re a good leader and stay organized, you’ll set your club up for success. While it might feel strange at first, it’s your job to give orders, set schedules, and make final decisions, so don’t be afraid to be assertive. It’s helpful to delegate club tasks so you’re not stuck with all the work. At your next meeting, bring a meeting agenda so the meeting stays on track. You might assign member roles, discuss problems in the club, or ask members for suggestions. While it’s important to be a leader, it’s also important to listen to your members’ ideas. Outside of meetings, take time to schedule fun activities with the group, like a movie or game night, which will help everyone feel more comfortable with each other. President Speech

Dear Rotarians,

Welcome to your rotary year 2020-2021 our theme this year is “rotary opens opportunities”..

Firstly, I would like to sincerely thank the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Greater Hyderabad who has worked hard over the past twelve months to make the year a success. This includes the past presidents of the club, Board of Directors, and all the Rotarians

Thanks to all the leaders who held a position in the district who have brought special laurels to our club, I am indebted to all of you. I would like to focus on and challenge our Club on that one-word Opportunity. My most important goal this year is to attract, retain, and engage new and existing members in and to our Club. We need to tap this Opportunity and try new ways of engaging and increasing our membership. Without a focus on increasing membership, we will not be able to do our most important work which is service to our District 3150.

As you are aware the COVID-19 situation in India is evolving on an hourly basis and even changing by the hour. The Governments, medical professionals, Civil Bodies are taking stronger measures to contain the spread of the virus. At this critical time, we need to practice the necessary hand hygiene practices, social distancing, and self-isolation if are traveling.

By now you have read RI President Holger Knaack’s email regarding Rotary’s Role in Battling Coronavirus. It is time to adopt an alternate meeting option that will allow everyone to stay connected until this COVID-19 situation subsides. The world is crippled in the hands of a deadly pandemic, but at the same time I see great opportunities to overcome this situation. Now it is time to look into the future and began another season of Rotary in District 3150. Now is the time to aspire for something greater, something that unites us in service to humanity. The world needs us now more than ever.

The Rotary Foundation in an important pillar of Rotary, Each Rotarian and club can choose the level of Foundation giving that is right for them. When you give $100 or more per year to the Annual Fund, you can become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. Multiply that gift by 10 and you are a Paul Harris Fellow — one of those who donate $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund, the Polio Plus Fund, or approved global grants.

Rotary is a service organization and part of the engagement and attraction of new members is to have a compelling service initiative that stimulates people to get involved. Over the next year, we will be pursuing a multi-year Global grant service project which will enable hundreds of children to pursue their elementary and secondary education.

Lastly, we need to promote what we do. Not only what we do locally but what Rotary does as an international organization. Rotary can change the world as we have shown with our efforts around Polio eradication. Who wouldn’t want to be part of an organization that can have that kind of impact both locally and internationally?

I’m honored to be serving as your President and looking forward to an exciting year of transformation, growth and Opportunities

Incoming President’s Address

Induction of President Petrea

Thank you and congratulations to our now Immediate Past President Andrew. I think I speak for all members when saying that you have done an outstanding job over the past 2 years. Our club continues to grow and strengthen through membership, projects, activities and fellowship.

Your dedication, leadership and mixing things up with fun activities and new ideas has helped bring our club to where we stand today. A happy and healthy one. You’ve certainly set the bar high; I feel no pressure at all.

Back in 2013, I was really honoured and excited to be inducted as the first female member of this great club with my dad as my sponsor and mentor. The thought of one day becoming President had never come to mind. I simply wanted to volunteer in the community. For those of you who know me well, I’m just a little bit passionate about all things Lions.

It’s unfortunate that our vice district governor, my dad, is unable to be here to night as he was meant to be conducting the handover for us and I know it meant a lot to him to be a part of tonight and he tried to be here, but we are very appreciative that Lion Gary took on the role in his place tonight.

It feels a little surreal to not only be inducted as President tonight, but to have my husband handover, or handball, the club presidency and becoming the first female president of this club.

What I love about this club is that we are strong in membership, open to new ideas and change, versatile in projects and activities, and have such a diversity of people who share a common goal to serve the community.

Although we are here to serve the community, it’s really important that we are involved in projects and activities that you, the members, are interested in and passionate about. I look forward to hearing about and exploring your ideas over the next year.

What I also really love about our club are the partners and families who support our members because without your involvement and volunteering, our club simply could not do what we do. And it’s now fantastic to have more families joining and seeing so many kids attending our meetings and for our club to be so welcoming and inclusive.

Being a family-friendly club is important to me and I know we are the envy of other clubs in our district. This is what I really look forward to building on in the next 12 months.

The bar has also been set to reach 75 members (thank you dad!). Continue to talk to everyone and anyone about what we do, and let’s continue to get the Lions name out there and educate our community while we help and support those in need.

Thank you for putting your faith in me to lead and represent the club for the next 12 months. I look forward to what we will achieve together. Let’s have another great year!

Petrea Stacey President

Acceptance Speech for Position

It’s such a great honor when people appoint or promote you to a specific position. A short “thank you, next” won’t suffice in thanking the people responsible for such circumstances. In events such as these, you need to give an impressive speech in front of several people. To achieve this, practice your skills in speech writing and compose an acceptance for position.

What Is an Acceptance Speech for Position?

After receiving a position or a promotion to a higher one, you will need to give a particular type of speech, and this is the acceptance speech for the position. Most people write their speeches beforehand and deliver them through either a memorized speech or extemporaneous speech . This speech usually includes thanking people who offered help and mentioning how grateful you are for the grand gesture.

How to Compose an Acceptance Speech for Position

An acceptance speech for position is a lot similar to an award acceptance speech . The difference between these two is that you will be receiving a new responsibility instead of getting an award certificate . Secure the success of your public speaking by considering the necessary components. Now, you wouldn’t want to disappoint the people who put you in that position. Your goal should be to do the exact opposite.

1. Devise a Speech Outline

Composing an outline is the most basic first step in essay writing and devising speeches. In this procedure, you need to take a moment to think about what your objectives are. What are the most important messages that you want to express? After having an idea, organize the flow of your thoughts, and structure your speech outline.  There are plenty of outline templates  online.

2. Compose an Introduction

You can’t start your speech with a series of thank you right off the bat. You need to set the mood first by greeting the guests and delivering your hook. What is an introductory hook? Its purpose is to attract the attention of your listeners, which would make them want to hear more from you. If your introduction is interesting enough, you can gain command of your audience. Another tip is to conduct an audience analysis beforehand. If you have a basic knowledge of your audience, you can tailor your introduction according to their interest.

3. Consider Important Elements

In giving your position acceptance speech, you should prioritize thanking the organization and the people who aided you. Also, you should state how grateful you are for the position. To avoid forgetting a name, you can devise a list containing the names of those you want to show your appreciation. In speaking about how great an honor you are receiving, avoid turning your speech into a pity party. Instead, you can state how you can contribute more to the organization with your new position.

4. Devise a Powerful Closing Statement

After doing the previous steps, now you’re left with closing your speech. Close it with style by delivering a statement that would urge them to think, call them to action, or leave them in awe. It can be a question, an inspiring quote, or an interesting fact. A conclusion powerful enough will earn you a sea of applause.

What is a speech for acceptance?

People give an acceptance speech on the occasion of receiving any prize or achievement award, including getting a position. It’s an expression of your gratitude and appreciation. This speech prioritizes giving merit to deserving people and showing respect to the organization. A person gives this speech out of courtesy or as an agreement for a requirement.

What are the elements of giving speeches?

Giving speeches involves a complex process, thus containing several elements. The elements in giving a speech include establishing a connection with the audience, speaking with clarity, modulating your voice, and incorporating appropriate gestures. If you take these elements into account in writing and delivering your speech, its success rate will improve.

How do you get a promotion to a higher position?

If you want to get a promotion, the first thing to do is get out of your comfort zone and showcase your strengths. If you work with a team, make sure you can contribute to raising your members’ performance. Also, you can devise and write down your job goals to set the direction of your career.

You are good at what you do, that’s why you are reading this article. Given that fact, it will be inevitable for you to give one or two speeches for accepting a position. Follow these steps, then compose and practice your acceptance speech before the event schedule . Make them think that giving you that position is the best decision they ever made.

Our president's speech at the 2018 gala.

At the 2018 Annual Gala, BGCSF President Rob Connolly gave an inspirational speech about how the Club helps create pathways to success for young people in San Francisco. His full speech is available below as a video and transcript.

Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate the work of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Tonight, of course, is about raising money to fund the programs and services that we offer to 19,700 youth each year. But it is also about celebrating childhood and bearing witness as young people display their talent and push the limits of their confidence. And it’s about bringing together like-minded people who believe in the power and potential of young people and the importance of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco.

At Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, we believe passionately that opportunities for lifelong success should be within the grasp of every single child. Period. Full Stop. And we believe the world is a better place when it works for everyone. Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco never stops pushing for break-through solutions and to expand the impact of the work, to reach more youth, to reach new neighborhoods, and develop new programs.

What this organization has built here over the past 20 years has been a very strategic, very methodical, very determined effort to make BGCSF into a rock solid institution that children, teens, and families can depend on day after day, month after month, and year after year for decades to come. Today, we have 14 locations: eight traditional Clubhouses, four school-based sites, a city park, and Camp Mendocino. In August, we will open our fifteenth location. This will be another public school site, located in George Washington Carver Elementary School in Bayview Hunters Point.

Currently, each day we reach 1,703 youth. Every week, we reach 2,385. And our goal is to grow to 2,000 youth served per day within two years, a 17% increase. Most sites are open 225 days per year, and the Don Fisher Clubhouse is open close to 260 days. The scope is impressive, but not nearly the whole story. The eight youth you heard from at the end of the video are the story. The youth featured in tonight’s program are the story. For us, it is always about both breadth and depth. High numbers of kids served and deep impact on individual kids’ lives.

At BGCSF we unleash the power and potential of people. When young people are confident and when they see a path forward and a place that they fit in, they make decisions that support a healthier life for themselves and their community. They choose education. They choose leadership opportunities and seek job skills that they know they need. They steer clear of a destructive path and choose a path to a bright future. Potential is realized not wasted.

But while our work is focused on young people, our impact is far greater. We support parents, allowing them to go to work - sometimes at a second, third, or even fourth job. We help them build their own skills and confidence for raising their children.

We expose adults in our city to each other through Board roles, community events, and corporate and individual volunteer projects. We inspire empathy and understanding where too little of each too often exists. We allow people to see and experience problems and injustices that they might not otherwise notice.

Depending on your level of involvement, this organization puts you on the ground in neighborhoods and has you grapple with the complexities of an organization that works every day in communities that hide their most beautiful attributes behind the hard exterior that comes from broken promises, failed services, too many young lives lost, and on the horizon - always it seems -more disappointment.

I am very comfortable saying that when someone truly engages with this organization - when someone really digs in and gets to know the staff, the kids and the families - they develop a deep admiration and a true understanding that what we do works.

And it does. From national winners in fine arts, dance, and basketball, to gold medals in swimming, to National Program Excellence recognition, to world-class partnerships, to college and high school scholarships and individual awards, to high school graduation and lifetime success. It works.

And at the end of the video you saw earlier, you saw our alumni highlighting the positive effect of the Club. You saw their enthusiasm. You saw the connection they keep with the Club. You saw young people not just dreaming, but realizing dreams. You saw hope. You saw lives transforming before you. You saw gratitude and trust. You saw kids wanting to share their success knowing that staff -- sometimes -- need to be reminded that what we do – every day – works.

Since 2013, we have added six locations – five of them inside of schools – and opened our state-of-the-art Don Fisher Clubhouse in the Western Addition. And in two-and-a-half years we expect to replace our Sunnydale Clubhouse serving 40 kids with a Clubhouse serving 140 kids, and we’ll do so in partnership with Mercy Housing. Our tiny, old three-room Clubhouse, owned by the housing authority, will become a state-of-the art Clubhouse. The facility will be linked to a Rec & Park field, pool, and – perhaps – a new gymnasium.

When we complete this project, we will be serving 665 youth per day in District 10 with sites in Bayview, on Hunters Point Hill, in Vis Valley, and in Sunnydale: the City’s most economically depressed areas.

I firmly believe that our nation needs to change in some big ways. We need to reboot. From where I sit, it is very clear that too many people across this nation are being left behind. That human potential is being wasted as dreams go unrealized, and as hope gives way to despair, for too many.

One in three children in this country grow up poor. We rank 36th of the 41 wealthiest countries in the world for child poverty.

Our child mortality rate is 6.1 out of 1,000. A child born in the U.S. is three times more likely to die in the first year than a child born in Japan or Finland. 43 million people in this country live in poverty. 43 million. And the measurement of poverty is wrong. It might be 80 million!

Why do we allow this to be so? Why is there anything – anything at all – that is partisan about tackling these problems?

I believe that as a society we will continue to come up short if we don’t rethink the investment it takes to meet the incredibly important – and ambitious – missions that our best nonprofits have.

I recently heard someone say, “People are weary of being asked to do the minimum they can possibly do for philanthropic causes …but they are yearning to reach their full potential for causes that they love.”

I like that. I’m challenged by that. The clear challenge for people like me is how to inspire people to love Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco to such an extent that they help us do things that, today, we don’t have the courage to imagine we can do. I’m a huge believer that the only reason anything happens in this world is that someone makes it happen.

So I invite you all to do something extraordinary for causes that you love. Of course, I’d love it if your cause was at-risk kids, and I’d love it even more if your organization was BGCSF.

But forget that for a moment. Do something extraordinary for something you truly believe in, and do it for no other reason than to make the world a better place for people live.

I’ve said many times that “our gift to our community is our staff.” I believe that American heroes aren’t just first responders or soldiers, sailors and airmen. Our staff stand in the gap in kids’ lives and say, “I will not let you down. I will not let you give up. I will stand with you.”

Our staff endure set-backs and failures but they show up again and again, day after day, week after week, and year after year. They do it for too little pay and way too little recognition. For the contribution they make to our community, I’d like for the staff of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco to stand and be recognized.

I want to conclude tonight with a personal story. My niece is a Psychology graduate student at NYU. For the past year she has been doing her fieldwork in Newark, NJ in a group home for boys. She works with a bunch of boys but one in particular won a place in her heart.

He’s a young man with three siblings, who all experienced significant abuse in their home. They all became wardens of the state. All three of his siblings have since been adopted. He remains in the group home. He’s 10. At 10, he’s been abused by those he was supposed to be able to trust. And he has been told through actions – repeatedly – that he’s worthless. Imagine how a 10 year old feels. Really, imagine it.

I’ve heard empathy defined as having the courage to see each other’s pain and be willing to stand in the presence of it, even when it becomes uncomfortable.

Last week, my niece had to separate from him as a professional response at the end of her semester. She was devastated.

My 4-year-old daughter, Malena, heard my wife and I talking about this. And looking up with her big eyes and in her precocious manner says, “Why doesn’t the little boy go to the Boys & Girls Club?”

Millions of kids in this country who need a Boys & Girls Club don’t have one. And thousands of kids in San Francisco who need a Boys & Girls Club experience don’t get one.

I feel honored to be President of BGCSF, and I always have. Thank you all for believing and caring. And thank you for ensuring that the best days of this 127-year old institution continue to lie ahead of it. Thank you.

Sample President's Message

New jersey  .

Dear Members, Sponsors and Colleagues,

As I enter my second year as President of the ACCNJ, I notice that our Chapter, and the ACC at large, has never been more relevant and important for those of us practicing in house in New Jersey and across the nation and world.  I've come to think of the ACC network as one very large, multi-national, best in class in house legal team.  A team that provides abundant opportunities to learn, teach, mentor, and share top quality legal advice.A team that enables us to advocate, brainstorm, give back to our communities, meet, network and socialize with friends and colleagues all over the country and world. (Yes - - ACC has chapters in 85 countries outside of the U.S!).

The changes around us—whether social, political, technological, scientific, economic or otherwise—require that we help our clients navigate through new and increasingly complex legal landscapes, which profoundly impact the companies for which we work, our communities, and the legal profession at large. In many instances, we are responsible to help shape those new legal landscapes.  Our terrific ACC community of professionals, including all our sponsors, is a network on which I have become increasingly reliant when facing these new challenges and opportunities.

I'm proud of our Chapter's successes over the last year, particularly in providing more opportunities for meaningful engagement of our members and sponsors, introducing innovative programming formats and topics, and providing professional development and outreach opportunities.  In the year ahead, we will continue these initiatives, as well as adding programming designed for the different stages of your career, virtual programming, and events held in collaboration with other chapters in the tri-state area and beyond.

Thank you members for your continued participation and enthusiasm in our professional community, and sponsors for your incredible support and advice. Finally, I'd like to give a special shout-out of appreciation to our Chapter Board of Directors and to Leslie Wolfson, our Executive Director, for their tireless work on behalf of the ACCNJ, and to the ACC organization for all the resources, guidance and support they provide each and every day.Thank you all!

Wishing you a good and successful 2019, and looking forward to seeing you soon.

Dear Members,

Oh what fun! As we reach the end of 2018, I would like to recognize some recent Chapter highlights and accomplishments.

At the ACC Global Annual Conference in Austin on October 21, 2018, our Chapter received the ACC Global Diversity Initiative Award for the Chapter’s Diversity Summer Corporate Internship program. This program places diverse area law students in 15 corporate legal departments for a summer internship. Several interns have gone on to in house careers following this internship, including the current Diversity Committee co-chair, Sadeq Khan, Chief Compliance Officer and Deputy General Counsel at Vertical Screen, Inc. As a prior diversity committee chair and Chapter president, I was extremely proud to accept this award, with Grace Manno, former President and Diversity Committee chair, on behalf of the Chapter. This program offers a unique opportunity for member companies, law students, and local law schools to partner to promote diversity in the legal profession as well as hands on in house experienc

I would also like to recognize three other Chapter committees this year – Communications, Meet Your Counterparts, and Women’s Events. Under the leadership of committee co-chair, Stephanie Hu, the Communications committee has established a strong social media presence for the Chapter on Twitter and Facebook. Our regular and relevant communications improve member engagement and highlights the many CLE, social, and community activities of our Chapter. In addition, our newly-formed Meet Your Counterparts committee, including Jackie Meredith-Batchelor, Pete Prinsen, Pia Biswas, and Chris Pushaw, in partnership with our sponsors, have organized MYC events at some of the area’s top and most popular venues throughout the area, including Yards Brewing, Savona, The Restaurant School, Estia, The Merchant Bar, Camden County Boathouse, and others. Our women’s events continue to be very popular with our members and sponsors. These events offer an opportunity for our members to focus on issues and interests unique to women in-house counsel, at some wonderful area venues, including the popular Logan rooftop and The Love. Thank you to Aileen Schwartz, Lorraine Koc, Lauren Neal, and Jackie Meredith-Batchelor for partnering with our sponsors in planning these events. Our MYCs and women’s events provide a fun networking opportunity and we have been excited to see many new members at these events!

Other programming highlights this fall included an interesting and insightful discussion with chief legal officers at the Tips from the Top program, organized by the Career Management committee, the Paralegal Forum, and Street Law, offering classroom instruction to high school students on legal topics.

Last, but not least, our annual Gala at the Please Touch Museum was our biggest yet. The Please Touch Museum was transformed into a true wonderland for an evening of dancing, conversation, carousel rides, and recognition of our summer interns and participating companies. Thank you to our Gala committee, Jackie Meredith-Batchelor, Shahrzad Kojouri, and Robin Seifert, for planning such an amazing evening, and to our many members and sponsors who attended.

In addition to our social events, our committee chairs and sponsors have put together relevant and engaging continuing legal education programs throughout the year.

As I come to the end of my term as Chapter President, I want to thank the officers, Board, past Presidents (especially Mike Crane), committee chairs, sponsors, members, and especially our Chapter administrators Chris Stewart and Joanne Ray for your support and guidance. Our Chapter continues to grow in exciting, inclusive, and innovative directions and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it. Best wishes to President Elect Pete Prinsen for an exciting year ahead!

Best regards, Anne Bancroft ACC Greater Philadelphia President, 2018

Southern California

Dear ACC Southern California Members & Friends,

Last fall our 2017-2018 distinguished Board members’ term came to an end, and a new Board of Directors and future leaders have joined our Board.  I am honored to be your incoming President and I want to acknowledge the leadership provided by John Lee and last years’ board.  I am excited to welcome the new class of Directors to the Board, new and returning members who I am certain will successfully fulfill their predecessors’ shoes!  Please join me in welcoming VPs: Ken Block and Monica Johnson, Secretary: Del Sabzerou, Treasurer: Adriana Dulic, and our Board of Directors: Relani Belous, Rebecka Biejo, Kush Desai, James Dierking, Elizabeth Duong, Tiffany Easton, Jennifer Fisher, Joni Gaudes, Victoria Harvey, Preston Hopson, Jerry Huang, Jennifer Ishiguro, Lynette Jones, Jill Kalliomaa, Robert Kang, John Kedeshian, Peter Macdonald, Nicole Nakagawa, Albert Nicholson, James Schindler, Alexander Winsberg, Ellen Yang, Christina Zabat- Fran, and our fearless leader and truly amazing, Betty St. Marie, as our Chapter Administrator.  I look forward to serving the Southern California Chapter as President, but I’m humbled too, especially considering the many outstanding, inspiring, and tireless leaders who keep this well-oiled machine running day in and day out throughout the year. I want to extend a special THANK YOU to my predecessor, John Lee, for his leadership and mentoring.  I also want to thank our Sponsors because our achievement would not have been possible without their continued support and dedication to excellence.

I know and have built relationships with many of you through ACC, but for those I have not met, let me share with you my path towards becoming involved with this great organization.  I started my career at Morrison & Foerster and went in-house with Paramount in 2000.  Since then, I have worked as in-house counsel for a variety of entertainment companies including the Walt Disney Corporation, FOX Searchlight Pictures and now Twentieth Century Fox.

When I joined ACC in 2008, I found it provided not only great networking and legal education opportunities, but also great new friends throughout the Chapter.  Volunteering with ACC Southern California on the committee and Board levels provided me with a greater appreciation for what our Chapter offers.

In 2019, the Board’s and my priorities will be to (1) engage our members to become even more involved with ACC both on the Chapter and Global levels (2) help our members to grow professionally, whether that’s by improving your skill sets for your current job through the tools provided by ACC or by advancing your legal career through ACC’s vast network, and (3) continue to provide you with solutions and opportunities through ACC resources that will help you pursue greatness in your chosen industry as well as in your community.

If you have an idea, suggestion, comment, improvement, or criticism, please contact me, any of our leadership team, or Betty and convey your thoughts.  If you want to make a difference, reach out to the Chair of the Committee or Betty and let them know you want to get more involved.

I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2019, and I am grateful for your partnership and dedication to our chapter to make it all possible!

Very Respectfully,

Kobie Conner President, ACC Southern California, 2018-19

National Capital Region

Dear Colleagues:

I am honored to lead our ACC National Capital Region chapter this year. With approximately 2,500 members across Virginia, D.C., and suburban Maryland, we are a strong and vital organization focused on being your go-to professional resource. Over 50 dedicated volunteer leaders, a strong group of sponsors, and our great staff make this all possible.

Each year, we provide our members with over 80 CLE opportunities on a broad array of substantive topics. These programs are shaped by our volunteer leaders specifically for you as in-house attorneys. I have always been impressed with the quality and diversity of our programming. And now with our increased focus on interactivity, we provide you with more opportunities to learn by doing -- and from each other.

In everything we do, we build in the opportunity for you to get to know your colleagues - whether during lunch at a CLE program, sharing ideas in an interactive program, meeting each other a micro-networking lunch, doing good through pro bono and community service, or attending happy hours and other social events. Having a strong professional network that you can call on with a difficult question helps you do your job better, and is very important if a job change is on the horizon.

All of the chapter's work is focused on enriching your experience as members, so we are always open to feedback on our current services and how we can better serve you. Feel free to reach out to me, any of our chapter leaders, or our great staff if you have ideas or would like to get involved.

Best regards, Navid C. Haghighi President

Outgoing President’s Speech and Handover Message

sample speech for president of a club

Prepared by Prof. Daniel Kwadwo Asiedu (GhIG President 2019- 21).

Mr. Chairman, GhIG Council members, Newly Elected Officers of the GhIG, General Membership of GhIG, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It gives me great pleasure, to be standing in front of you on this day, 16 th of December 2021, exiting my position as the President of GhIG for the past two years. Thank you for the privilege and opportunity you gave me to serve the Institution as President from 2019 till today. In the same breath, I congratulate Dr Anthony Duah who is succeeding me as President of the Institution and wish him well in his new role. I also wish him and all other elected officers of the Institution well in all their future endeavours.

I would like to thank the Council members of GhIG for their selfless dedication to the affairs of the Institution. They served at a high level of commitment. They sacrificed their time and resources to work for the good of the institution at no financial cost to the Institution. Many times, they had to go through heavy traffic to attend Council meetings at the GhIG Secretariat located at the Geological Survey Department Head office. I will also want to thank the general membership of the Institution, particularly those who served on various committees of Council and those who participated in other activities of the Institution, including seminars and workshops.

Mr. Isaac Adjovu and the staff at the GhIG Secretariat, keep up the good work. Your work demands a high level of integrity and competence and you are so far doing a great job. Keep it up!

As Council for the year 2019 to 2021, I would like to touch on some of our achievements, challenges, and some advice in the form of recommendations to our incoming Council.

Mr Chairman, over the past two year amongst the achievements, are;

  • In August 2019, we successfully organized the Annual GhIG Conference (GHICON) at the University of Mines and Technology. The theme of the conference was: geoscience, environmental stewardship and society
  • In September 2019, we completed the review of the GhIG constitution and byelaws. Hardcopies were printed for members.
  • In October 2019, we successfully celebrated the International Earth Science Week. The theme for Earth Science Week was Geoscience Is for Everyone.
  • In October 2019, we created regional branches of the institution and elected Chairpersons for each of these regional branches
  • In December 2019. The Council established three (3) publication outlets: Journal of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists, Bulletin of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists, and Ghana Institution of Geoscientists Newsletter
  • In January 2020 editor-in-chief and publication managers were appointed for each of the 3 publication outlets. These officers are expected to form the Editorial Board, associate editors and establish the journal/bulletin/newsletter
  • In March 2020, A committee was formed to develop a document for the regulation of geoscience professional practice.
  • In July 2020 a series of webinars were organized to educate members and the general public on earthquakes and seismology.
  • November 2020. A virtual conference young geoscientists was organized. The theme of the conference was: Building the competencies of young geoscientists for academia and industry.
  • March 2021. Submitted documents to the Registrar General for the legislation of the Institution as a Professional Body
  • March 2021. A proposal has been sent to the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana for partnership to run short professional development courses for our members and the Geoscience community.

Mr. Chairman, the Council faced challenges in three main areas:

  • Covid-19 pandemic : Activities came to a halt by the end of the first quarter of the year due to the covid-19 pandemic. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated lockdowns and ban on meetings and gatherings, GHIGCON-2020 and GHIGCON-2021 could not come on. The covid also affected some of our Action plan for 2021 and 2021 which included awards nights, end-of-year get-together, engagement with industry, and frequency in the organisation of workshops, public lectures and symposia.
  • Finances : Even though our membership increased has increased significantly for the past two years this has not led to corresponding increase in the payment of dues. Also, inflation and the general the cost of living in the country increases every year. However, the levels of our dues payment has remained constant for more than the last 5 years. Finally, most of the funds we use to run the institution and pay for the salaries of the staff at the secretariat have been derived from sponsorship we obtain for our annual conferences. Since we have been unable to organise CHIGCON for 2021 and 2022, this has significantly affected our finances
  • Delivery of targets for the period (2019-21):  The work of the institution is sacrificial and members who are assigned work are not enumerated in anyway, therefore the they have to use their time and resources for free. This has affected the timeous delivery of targets. Of course, the covid-19 pandemic has also contributed to this situation.

Mr. Chairman, I end my speech by making the following 10 recommendations to the incoming Council:

  • Fuel public awareness and enthusiasm for Geoscience, through public lectures and other engagement initiatives, and provide information on the Geoscience relevant to people’s lives.
  • Institute training programmes for Geoscience graduates and equipping them with the skills needed for the job market.
  • Institute a mentorship programme for early career Geoscience professional GhIG members.
  • Institutionalize the celebration of the International Earth Science Week, to educate the general public on the importance of geoscience to their everyday living
  • Increase the financial base of the Institution through the establishment of GhIG Foundation
  • Oversee the establishment of the Chartered Professional Geoscientists scheme for professional practitioners in the field of Geoscience, and promote their value across all Geoscience sectors.
  • Regulate the professional works of Geoscience practitioners in the country through the establishment of a Geoscience Council.
  • Establish a functional and effective sub-discipline branches such as Hydrogeology, Petroleum Geoscience, Environmental Geoscience, Mineral Geoscience, and Engineering Geoscience.
  • Partner with industry to engage in activities for our mutual benefit.
  • Develop a 5-year strategic plan for the Institution.

I like to congratulate all the elected officers who have availed themselves to serve in the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists for the term 2021- 2023. I pledge my support to you and wish you all the best.

To the incoming President Dr Anthony Duah, it is not going to be easy to lead GhIG as it has grown bigger and complex for the past four years. But with the support of the incoming executives, the Council, GhIG Secretariat, the general membership, and last but not least, your family, you should be able to sail through and effectively deliver on your mandate. Above all, ensure that you thoroughly enjoy your term as President of GhIG.

I thank you all, for your attention. May the Good Lord bless us all!

THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH The outgoing President One Health, the VP, Org. Sec and all the protocol observed. Good evening, It is my greatest delight this evening for your trust and faith you bestowed in me as the incoming President of this Association. With all the opportunities and challenges that come with my acceptance to serve us all, I am of the belief that this journey will not be a smooth one if I am to walk it alone, however, we thank our leaders for drafting constitution that recognizes the importance of the deputy President, Treasurer, Secretary General and Project Director as it is through this synergism that we are going to make sure that our theme of One Health, One people, One Kenya is going to be achieved. Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous and adorable initiatives that were undertaken by the previous crop of leaders. Indeed you are an inspiration, a challenge and an avenue for us to continue doing these great works that you began, I am certain though, that with this team that we have, we shall even do much better because I have faith in this team. To our members who may also be belonging to other associations, we still want to say that, this journey we cannot make alone as leaders, but it is through your support, critics and encouragements that we shall have something to do together because together we shall continue to make it. Thank you all, God bless you, God bless One health, God bless Kenya

Donald Trump's Rambling Rally Speech Raises Questions

D onald Trump's mention of the "beautiful" Battle of Gettysburg during a campaign rally in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, on Saturday got the former president some attention on social media, with users wondering what his rambling "rant" was about.

"Gettysburg, what an unbelievable battle that was," Trump said while addressing the crowd in the town and wearing a Make America Great Again hat. "It was so much, and so interesting, and so vicious and horrible, and so beautiful in so many different ways—it represented such a big portion of the success of this country," he continued.

"Gettysburg, wow—I go to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to look and to watch," he said. "And the statement of Robert E. Lee, who's no longer in favor—did you ever notice it? He's no longer in favor. 'Never fight uphill, me boys, never fight uphill.' They were fighting uphill, he said, 'Wow, that was a big mistake,' he lost his big general. 'Never fight uphill, me boys,' but it was too late," Trump added.

Newsweek contacted Trump's 2024 campaign team for comment by email on Sunday morning.

Saturday's rally was Trump's first major campaign event in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, which President Joe Biden is expected to visit in the coming days. He will reportedly make three stops there next week, starting with his hometown of Scranton.

Pennsylvania's 19 electoral votes—the most of any swing state in the country—could make a big difference for both candidates in November, as they have done before. Trump won the state in 2016 by fewer than 45,000 votes over Hillary Clinton , but lost it to Biden in 2020, who won by less than 1.5 percent, or about 80,000 votes.

Trump's mention of the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought between July 1 and 3, 1863, between Confederates and Federal troops, didn't go unnoticed by social media users, journalists and strategists following the former president's rally on Saturday.

"Donald Trump doesn't know the first thing about The Battle of Gettysburg. He shouldn't even try being a historian. His lack of in-depth knowledge quickly reveals itself," wrote an X, formerly Twitter, user who describes themself as pro-Ron DeSantis.

"Trump goes on a weird rant about the battle of Gettysburg and then notes of Robert E. Lee that 'he's no longer in favor. Did you ever notice that?'" wrote journalist Aaron Rupar. Confederate General Lee led the slave-holding states in the South toward the end of the American Civil War.

"When there's an essay question on the test you didn't study for," wrote a user on the social media platform, mocking Trump's mention of the battle.

Many users also questioned how the deadliest battle of the Civil War, with an estimated 23,000 Federal troops and 28,000 Confederate soldiers killed, injured or captured over three days, could be considered "beautiful." Though the Civil War officially ended almost two years after Gettysburg, the bloody battle is considered a turning point for the eventual victory of the Union in 1865.

The Battle of Gettysburg wasn't Trump first mention of the Civil War during a 2024 campaign event this year. Talking at a rally in Iowa in January, the former president said that the war "could have been negotiated" and thus avoided. On that occasion, Trump didn't suggest how he would have avoided the conflict, but said that he found it "so horrible, but so fascinating."

CNN commentator Karen Finney, a distant descendant of Lee and a freed slave from Virginia, penned an opinion piece in January warning against the danger of those who want to rewrite the story of the Civil War.

"Counterfeit narratives cannot be indulged or ignored—not in our society, not in the history we teach in schools and not in a presidential campaign," she wrote.

KYSU President Dr. Akakpo Highlights Community Support in Frankfort Kiwanis Club Speech

KYSU President Dr. Akakpo Highlights Community Support in Frankfort Kiwanis Club Speech

Frankfort, Ky - (April 12, 2024) - Kentucky State University (KYSU) President, Dr. Akakpo, addressed members of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club (FKC) on Thursday, April 4, 2024, emphasizing the university's dedication to serving the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Dr. Akakpo highlighted KYSU's prompt response to aid individuals and families affected by floods of 2021 in Western, KY and 2022 in Eastern, KY.

FKC members enjoyed lunch before hearing from FKC President, Tim Reynolds, who gave the welcoming. Followed by President Elect, Sonia Sanders, who introduced President Akakpo.

"It was enlightening and a pleasure to have Dr. Akakpo attend our Kiwanis meeting. Frankfort Kiwanis is an intrical supporting partner of KYSU's Circle K International (CKI) on campus with 55+ members and its students volunteers," stated Sanders.

During President Akakpo's speech, he acknowledged the lack of recognition for KYSU's quick response and efforts. He emphasized the need to tell KYSU's story and shed light on its contributions to the community.

"Kentucky State University was one of the first to respond with disaster relief in 2021 in Western, KY with enough manpower to help families. Then again in 2022 in Eastern, KY ," said President Akakpo. "No one knows about this, if you google KYSU, you won't see one article. KYSU was on the ground when the need of the Commonwealth was at the highest. Since then, we have increased our mobile response team and educational resources."

President Akakpo's dedication to strengthening connections within both Kentucky and the local commnunity reflects his commitment to KYSU. Dr. Akakpo's exceptional leadership skills serve as a reminder of the Thorobred spirit!

As Trump visits Newtown, rally shows he has 'ground game' in Bucks County, organizer says

sample speech for president of a club

Waving Trump signs beneath Trump flags that snapped in brisk winds, hundreds of supporters of Donald Trump lined a Newtown Township street to greet the former president and 2024 candidate Saturday afternoon.

Trump, likely the GOP nominee in the November General Election, was hosted at the Newtown Athletic Club, where $2,500 got you in, but $25,000 for a photo-op with the ex-commander-in-chief could not be confirmed.

About 300 people were inside the NAC's Training Facility to hear the ex-prez speak, said Jim Worthington, the NAC's owner.

"He raised millions," he said.

The crowd was a mix.

"Accountants, building contractors, lawyers and school teachers," Worthington said.

Trump spoke about the border, illegal immigration and price inflation under incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden.

“He (also) talked about how Putin would never have invaded Ukraine if he were president, because they would pay a price. He said the same thing about President Xi of China -- he would never invade Taiwan if (Trump) was president because there would be hell to pay," he said.

Trump may return to Bucks County in October for a public rally, but it's unlikely the NAC will host.

"He'd likely want to find a farm so thousands of people could come," he said.

Outside, about a dozen rally-goers interviewed cited one reason above others for supporting Trump: inflation. It’s killing their household budgets.

“Supermarket prices, that’s what different today,” said Brian Land of Warwick, when asked what had changed since Trump left office four years ago.

Also, they worry that college, cars and a house in the suburbs, classic symbols of the American Dream, are becoming unaffordable for middle-class people. Most identified themselves as working class or blue-collar middle-class families.

“I was making a lot more money under Trump than Biden,” said Matt Russo, of Langhorne. Russo, a union worker, was there with his girlfriend, Jessica Iannucci, and their five children.

“What I like about Trump is that he’s not a politician,” said Ianucci, an eight-year Marine veteran. For her, Trump is “relatable.” As for President Joe Biden? She sighed.

“Is he really the president?” she said, frustrated. “I mean, half the time it seems like he’s confused and doesn’t know where he is or what he’s supposed to say.”

Behind the line of street ralliers was Mike Domanico, who opened a Trump merchandise store in Bensalem in 2020. He parked a portable version on a nearby lawn.

Trump flags and any kind of hat — but especially the signature red “Make America Great Again” hat — are consistently top sellers, he said. Another top seller is Joe Biden toilet paper, bearing the president’s face.

“I keep selling out of these,” he said, pointing to a stack of rolls going quickly.

Audrey Strein, a conservative Republican who quickly organized the street rally with an email last week, said she doesn’t want the Trump campaign to give up on the 1 st Congressional District in Bucks County, where Trump has lost twice.

“I wanted to show him that we have a ground game ready in Bucks County,” she said. She added that she has bumped heads with the county’s moderate GOP leadership, which is lukewarm on Trump.

“Our leadership told us (in 2020) that Bucks County is not Trump country,” she said, “but look around.”

Not all were there to cheer the former president.

Ann Perry of Morrisville, wearing a “Black Lives Matter” T-shirt, and holding a sign referring to Trump’s upcoming hush money trial with a porn actress, spoke two words to Trump supporters that made some cringe.

“Joe Biden,” she said to a group of ralliers. “They hate when you say his name.”

Another man, who wouldn't give his name, antagonized Trumpers by calling them cultists, and then engaged in rants so angry and vulgar that two police officers had to warn him twice to knock it off, since there were small children within earshot. It was the only tense moment of the afternoon. Otherwise, a happy crowd.

Trump’s flashing, motorcycle-led motorcade rolled in just before 3 p.m. The reaction from the crowd was that of die-hard fans of a rock star on a comeback tour.

Trump was due in Schnecksville in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, at 7 p.m. Saturday. The White House said President Biden will visit Scranton and Pittsburgh next week, prior to the April 23 primary election, cementing the importance of Pennsylvania in the November election even though the Pa. primary will have little impact on the nominees.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Donald Trump offered a political lifeline Friday to House Speaker Mike Johnson , saying the beleaguered GOP leader is doing a “very good job,” and tamping down the far-right forces led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene trying to oust him from office.

Trump and Johnson appeared side-by-side at the ex-president’s Mar-a-Lago club, a rite of passage for the new House leader as he hitches himself, and his GOP majority, to the indicted Republican Party leader ahead of the November election .

“I stand with the speaker,” Trump said at an evening press conference at his gilded private club.

Trump said he thinks Johnson, of Louisiana, is “doing a very good job – he’s doing about as good as you’re going to do.”

“We’re getting along very well with the speaker — and I get along very well with Marjorie,” Trump said.

But Trump flashed some criticism over efforts to oust the speaker calling it “unfortunate,” saying there are “much bigger problems” right now.

The visit was arranged as a joint announcement on new House legislation to require proof of citizenship for voting , but the trip itself is significant for both. Johnson needed Trump to temper hard-line threats to evict him from office . And Trump benefits from the imprimatur of official Washington dashing to Florida to embrace his comeback bid for the White House and his tangled election lies .

“It is the symbolism,” said Charlie Sykes, a conservative commentator and frequent Trump critic.

“There was a time when the Speaker of the House of Representatives was a dominant figure in American politics,” he said. “Look where we are now, where he comes hat in hand to Mar-a-Lago.”

While the moment captured the fragility of the speaker’s grip on the gavel, just six months on the job, it also put on display his evolving grasp of Trump-era politics as the Republicans in Congress align with the “Make America Great Again” movement powering the former president’s re-election bid.

Johnson and Trump underscored their alliance Friday by using similar wording to describe one part of their campaign strategy — pummeling President Joe Biden with alarmist language over what Republicans claim is a “migrant invasion.”

By linking the surge of migrants coming to the U.S. with the upcoming election, Trump and Johnson raised the specter of noncitizens from voting — even though it’s already a federal felony for a noncitizen to cast a ballot in a federal election and exceedingly rare .

Trump called America a “dumping ground” for migrants coming to the U.S., and revived pressure on Biden to “close the border.”

The speaker nodded along. “It could, if there are enough votes, affect the presidential election,” warned Johnson, who had played a key role in challenging the 2020 election that Trump lost to Biden, previewing potential 2024 arguments.

In fact, Trump had made similar claims of illegal voting in 2016 but the commission he appointed to investigate the issue disbanded without identifying a single case . A previous voter crackdown risked striking actual citizens from the voting rolls.

Ahead of the meeting, the Trump campaign sent a background paper that echoed language from the racist great replacement conspiracy theory to suggest that Biden and Democrats are engaging in what Trump’s campaign called “a willful and brazen attempt to import millions of new voters.”

Some liberal cities like San Francisco have begun to allow noncitizens to vote in a few local elections. But there’s no evidence of significant numbers of immigrants violating federal law by casting illegal ballots.

Afterward, Trump’s team said the speaker agreed to hold a series of public committee meetings over the next two months ahead of the new House legislation.

Greene, a top Trump ally, said on social media that while she is “working as hard as possible” to elect Trump, “I do not support Speaker Johnson.”

In the Trump era, the sojourns by Republican leaders to his private club in Palm Beach, Florida, have become defining moments, amplifying the lopsided partnership as the former president commandeers the party in sometimes humiliating displays of power.

Such was the case when Kevin McCarthy , then the House GOP leader, trekked to Mar-a-Lago after having been critical of the defeated president after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. A cheery photo was posted afterward, a sign of their mending relationship.

Johnson proposed the idea of coming to Mar-a-Lago weeks before Greene filed her motion to vacate him from the speaker’s office, just as another group of hardliners had previously ousted McCarthy. The visit comes days before the former president’s criminal trial on hush money charges gets underway next week in New York City.

The speaker’s own political future depends on support — or at least not opposition — from the “Make America Great Again” Republicans who are aligned with Trump but creating much of the House dysfunction that has brought work there to a halt.

Johnson commands the narrowest majority in modern times and a single quip from the former president can derail legislation. He was once a Trump skeptic, but the two men now talk frequently.

“I think it’s an emerging relationship,” said Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., who served as interior secretary in the Trump administration.

Even still, Trump urged Republicans this week to “kill” a national security surveillance bill that Johnson had personally worked to pass, contributing to a sudden defeat that sent the House spiraling. The legislation was approved Friday in a do-over but only after Johnson provided his own vote before departing for Florida.

Johnson understands he needs Trump’s backing to conduct almost any business in the House — including his next big priority, providing U.S. aid to Ukraine to fight Russia’s invasion.

In a daring move, the speaker is working both sides to help Ukraine, talking directly to the White House on the national security package that is at risk of collapse with Trump’s opposition. Greene is warning of a snap vote to oust Johnson from leadership if he allows any U.S. assistance to flow to the overseas ally.

“We’re looking at it,” Trump said about the national security package.

On the issue of election integrity, though, Johnson is leading his House GOP majority to embrace Trump’s lies about a stolen election and laying the groundwork for 2024 challenges.

Trump continues to insist the 2020 election was marred by fraud, even though no evidence has emerged in the last four years to support his claims and every state in the nation certified their results as valid.

As he runs to reclaim the White House, Trump has essentially taken over the Republican National Committee, turning the campaign apparatus toward his priorities. He supported Michael Whatley to lead the RNC, which created a new “Election Integrity Division” and says it is working to hire thousands of lawyers across the country.

Tired of the infighting and wary of another dragged-out brawl like the monthlong slugfest last year to replace McCarthy, few Republicans are backing Greene’s effort to remove Johnson, for now.

But if Trump signals otherwise, that could all change.

Associated Press reporters Stephen Groves, Kevin Freking and Nicholas Riccardi contributed to this report.

Donald Trump backs Speaker after winning Congress hearings on election fraud

Televised sessions will scrutinise the security of US elections as former president continues to claim 2020 vote was stolen

Donald Trump said Mike Johnson was "doing a really good job under very tough circumstances"

Donald Trump has backed the embattled Republican House Speaker after he agreed to hold a series of congressional hearings on election interference.

The former president met Mike Johnson at his Florida resort on Friday where the pair pledged to work together on “election integrity”, which will include televised committee sessions over the next two months on US voting security in the US.

According to Mr Trump – who continues to falsely claim victory in the 2020 presidential election – the hearings will “provide the American public an opportunity to hear sworn testimony and get clarity on” election issues, including mail-in voting and voter registration.

Republicans are pushing for tighter rules on voting procedures and on Friday Mr Trump and Mr Johnson pledged to introduce legislation that will require people who register to vote in a federal election to prove that they are an American citizen.

Mr Trump has wrongly claimed that large numbers of non-citizens frequently vote in US elections.

Despite the new bill, the practice of non-citizens voting in US elections is already illegal.

Mr Trump’s show of support for Mr Johnson comes as he faces a possible leadership challenge after only six months as speaker, led by Trump-ally and Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is leading calls to oust Mike Johnson

The pair appeared side by side at Mar-a-Lago in a vivid display of how Mr Johnson, and the Republican party in Congress, are now freighted to Mr Trump’s needs ahead of November’s presidential vote , including his claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

Mr Trump has claimed without evidence that mail-in voting is subject to widespread fraud. Last December he called for postal voting to be abolished,. He suggested last month that “any time the mail is involved, you’re going to have cheating”.

The former president and Mr Johnson put on a show of unity on Friday, despite their differences over Ukraine aid, which Mr Trump opposes , and the re-authorisation of foreign surveillance legislation, which Trump encouraged Republicans to reject earlier this week, but passed the lower chamber on Friday.

Mr Trump said: “He’s doing a really good job under very tough circumstances and I appreciate that he came to Mar-a-Lago.”

In a post on Trump’s Truth Social platform, the former president said Mr Johnson had agreed “to hold a series of public committee hearings over the next two months which will provide Members the opportunity to fact-find in advance of potential legislation to further safeguard our elections from interference.”

The public hearings would be held to allow the House to scrutinise how the federal government is preventing illegal immigrants and non-citizens from voting in the 2024 presidential election.

It comes amid a row between Mr Trump and President Biden over the US’s border security with immigration set to be a key battleground before November.

Mr Johnson said the legislation would put the US “on a par with virtually every other democracy around the world that also prohibits non-citizen voting” and would expunge non-citizens already on voter rolls.

He added that it was a “critical thing to do at a very critical time.”

But the planned law was immediately attacked by Democrats. Progressive congresswoman Pramila Jayapal called the idea “ludicrous”.

“The reality is that they have done everything that they can on the Republican side to undermine election integrity,” Ms Jayapal said.

“This is the obligatory kiss the ring of the cult of Trump that the speaker is undertaking.”

At the meeting, Mr Trump also addressed his imminent hush money criminal trial in New York , which a judge on Friday refused to postpone on the grounds of publicity about the case.

Asked at Mar-a-Lago if he planned to testify, Mr Trump said: “Yeah I would testify, absolutely,” adding that he considered his court appointment “a scam that’s not a trial”.
