Abstract: Based on fifteen years of data on the annual Academy of International Business (AIB) best dissertation Farmer Award finalists, we find that these dissertations were done at a range of North American universities. Interestingly, dissertation topics differed from the topics covered in the three top IB journals with five-sixths of the topics in management, organization, economics, or finance and two-thirds set in a single country or region (US, Japan, North America, and Western Europe).

Specifically, this survey identifies (1) prolific authors and their institutions, (2) author demographics and collaborations, (3) major research streams and recent discipline evolution, and (4) research designs and statistical methods used. Such inquiry can reveal the current state of IB research, and suggest editorial mandates and future research directions.

This study is motivated by two research questions: (1) Which recent contributions have been driving the research agenda in international business? (2) Which emerging themes in the literature are likely to set the stage for future work? To examine these questions, the study examined scholarly work in international business over the time period 1996–2006 in six leading international business journals (Journal of International Business Studies, Management International Review, Journal of World Business, International Marketing Review, Journal of International Marketing, and International Business Review). Next, a Delphi study of the most prolific authors in these journals over the same time period was conducted to delineate a future research agenda in international business. Addressing these two research questions provides us with a more complete understanding of the progress made to date in international business research, and provides a glimpse of the future.

Interestingly, dissertation topics differed from the topics covered in the three top IB journals with five‐sixths of the topics in management, organization, economics, or finance and two‐thirds set in a single country or region (U.S., Japan, North America, and Western Europe). Survey research is the most common methodology but analysis of secondary data is growing. As expected, the finalists are on average an extraordinarily prolific group.

Doctor of Philosophy in the Field of Business Administration, International Business Concentration

The objective of the PhD in business administration with a concentration in international business is to prepare students for academic careers at major research universities. To meet this objective, the program:

  • Equips students with an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of international business theories and concepts.
  • Provides candidates with the necessary conceptual, quantitative, and methodological skills to carry out high quality empirical research aimed at publication in top-tier academic journals.
  • Produces well-trained students who can obtain an academic appointment at a top school in international business or related discipline.
  • Prepares candidates for the varied responsibilities of academic careers.

By the end of the program, students are expected to have one or more journal publications in top-tier academic journals; made multiple presentations at major academic conferences; won awards for best dissertations and best papers at professional conferences; and developed effective personal networks with scholars from around the world.

The PhD in business administration involves two years of formal courses established by each department and approved by the doctoral committee. Students take a minimum of 45 credits during their program, including 27 credits in core courses, a 3-credit summer paper, and 15 credits in elective courses. Students should consult their faculty advisory group about the required courses and electives for which they should register.

Students should complete at least 39 credits within the first two years from matriculation. The remaining 6 credits should be completed during the third year.

Requirements for the international business concentration

*Policies for core courses

In general, all core courses should be doctoral courses, i.e., those at the 8000 level. All courses must be taken for letter grades. Required courses cannot be waived without substitution except in unusual circumstances as determined on a case-by-case basis. Examples of unusual circumstances include students holding a specialized master's or doctoral degree where equivalent core courses were taken in a particular area (such as statistics or mathematics). Students may petition the Associate Dean of Research and Doctoral Programs to substitute up to 12 credits of required courses with alternative courses approved by the faculty advisory group.

In the year 2015 the United Nations (UN) presented 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs are a blueprint for achieving a better and sustainable future for all with a special emphasis on international business actors as agents of transformation. Despite initial breakthroughs, the international business actors and scholars alike have not kept pace with the growing important of the SDGs in our lives. While global firms tend to approach SDGs to reduce their costs or fit into the legal framework, the international business literature has overwhelmingly focused on SDGs in a developed economy context. Moreover, various academic outlets have laid a greater emphasis on ethics and responsible governance than on corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainable development and environmental issues, an observation that resonates the approach of the business landscape. Thus, it is safe to conclude that seven years since the introduction of the SDGs, global actors are yet to realise their full potential. Sustainable International Business is a new book that adopts a global approach to studying international business and its implications for SDGs. It stimulates research and rethinking among scholars and practitioners to understand how businesses operate internationally into lucrative markets, its role in sustainable business growth, glocal value creation, and economic development. It provides insights into how international firms, entrepreneurs, family businesses and other stakeholders balance the act of value creation and sustainable business. The book covers three key pillars of sustainability: economic, social and environmental, and addresses capacity building and the grand challenges that international business needs to develop solutions for.

MSc International Business and Strategy: Global Challenges

This programme is rooted in two academic domains, International Business and Strategy. It will suit graduates from any discipline who wish to specialise and critically engage in these subjects. The programme will equip you with a competitive advantage in the graduate jobs market by giving you the tools to deal with the new 'mega-forces' of globalisation driven by technological advancement, climate change, global health crises and geopolitical events.

This MSc draws on cutting-edge research by leading academics who will guide you to explore the Global Challenges facing international businesses and society, such as global warming, increasing migration flows, food insecurity, poverty, and greater competition for increasingly scarce resources. You will gain the contextual, historical, and political perspectives of experts in these areas to enable them to think critically and solve problems practically in the workplace.

This programme will help you to:

You will study five core and one elective unit (20 credits each), as well as the International Business and Strategy Dissertation (60 credits).

The first three units will introduce you to core theoretical perspectives and critical issues underpinning International Business and Strategy, preparing you for the further specialist taught units as well as the research dissertation.

Core units:

  • International Business Perspectives in a Turbulent World will focus on core concepts from international business and broader contextual issues in the global economy.
  • Global Strategy will introduce concepts from strategic management and focus on the specific strategic management challenges for multinationals in a global environment.
  • Global Challenges will focus on the 'wicked problems' facing society that contemporary organisations need to navigate.
  • Entrepreneurship and Society will provide the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills to seek solutions to global challenges and consider how entrepreneurship can serve as a means to achieve sustainable systemic social impact. It will also seek to develop socially entrepreneurial mindsets.
  • Research Skills for International Business and Strategy will provide a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of conducting research in International Business and Strategy.

An upper second-class honours degree or international equivalent in any discipline.

For applicants who are currently completing a degree, we understand that their final grade may be higher than the interim grades or module/unit grades they achieve during their studies.

We will consider applicants whose interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements. We may make these applicants an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so the applicant would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of their degree. Specific module requirements may still apply.

We will consider applicants whose grades are slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements, if they have at least one of the following:

  • evidence of significant (minimum of 1 year in a paid role) relevant work experience in a managerial role.
  • a relevant postgraduate qualification.

More than 2,000 alumni work for JPMorgan Chase, more than 1,000 are employed by Amazon, and more than 600 work for Google and Microsoft.
