Scoring structure

This task contributes 11.2 marks. It is scored based on our ability to write a convincing essay on the given topic. And it affects the scoring of grammar, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse. Also the score is awarded based on the below factors.

Content Content is scored by determining if all aspects of the topic have been addressed in your response. If your essay does not address the topic, you will not receive any score points for your essay on any of the factors, which we are discussing now. Your essay will be scored zero in PTE writing section. Also you have to support any arguments with details, examples and explanations.

Development, structure and coherence These are scored according to the organization of your response. Make sure the essay writing in PTE contains an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion that relate to the topic of the essay. Within the paragraphs, ideas should be clearly presented and supported with details, examples and explanations. Transitions between paragraphs must be smooth.

And use complex sentences rather than using simple sentence structures and use academic vocabularies appropriately. These are all give full credits to your response.

Grammar, Vocabulary and Spelling Grammar is scored by examining sentence structure, punctuation and capital letters wherever is required. Use variety of academic words. And use synonyms in the introduction to paraphrase the topic sentence. But avoid repetition of same words. Most importantly PTE Academic recognizes English spelling conventions from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. But use only one spelling convention consistently in all your responses. Don’t mix the spelling content from different countries. This is very important point to be noted.

PTE Essay Writing prompts

These are the different types of essay in PTE writing section that we get in the test.

Agree or disagree Discuss about the topic and state your points as why you agree or why you disagree. If the question is about agree or disagree such as, Is the fast food good for health or not? You can mention some points on why it is bad for health in first paragraph and how it benefits for lower income people in second paragraph and conclude with your statement on one side. This will give clear picture of the topic with many supporting points.

Discuss two opinions You have to talk about two sides of the argument in paragraph1 and paragraph2 and say which one is best in the conclusion. Talk on both the sides so that you will get lot of points.

Causes and Effects For example, why people like travelling and what are the effects when they travel such as tasting different food, experiencing different culture.

Problems and Solutions

Advantages and disadvantages.

We will see each type of essay in PTE writing with examples using the same template for all type of essays.

PTE Essay Writing Universal Template

One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that <negative point of the topic> . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. There are a number of arguments in favor of my stance. Most preponderant one is that <positive point of the topic> and there are numerous other benefits in various fields. Thanks to the wide range of advantages it offers, not only one benefit more when it comes to being effective, but they can enhance productivity and quality of their lives, with much ease, efficacy, and convenience. Needless to say, all these merits stand one in good stead, as far as augmenting the chances of prosperity and excellence is concerned. Another pivotal factor in the aforementioned proposition is that it is only likely to help one thrive and excel in varied areas. Besides, when only one follows such a system, can they broaden their horizons, thus learning such attributes as dedication and perseverance. Hence, it is apparent why many are in favor of <positive key point> . In the views of the arguments outlined above, one can conclude that the benefits of <positive key point> are indeed too great to ignore.

This is one universal template, which we can use for any type of essays. Start with an introduction, two body paragraphs and conclusion at the end. Again, with this template you can get 79+ but you have to make sure that the other writing tasks should be attended well without any mistakes. Don’t worry about the different prompts such as agree or disagree or advantages or disadvantages, you can use the same template for all types of essays. Using this template you can score in grammar, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse as well.

Now we will see example for each type of essays.

Agree or disagree

Big salary is much more important than job satisfaction. Do you agree or disagree? Provide relevant examples if necessary. Here they have directly given as agree or disagree. Sometimes they will not mention this and we have to identify by understanding the topic. Always mention the negative side of the topic in the first paragraph. Some contradicting point relevant to the main idea in the second paragraphs and supporting points in the subsequent paragraphs..

Using Template One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that low salary is more disadvantageous . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. There are a number of arguments in favor of my stance. Most preponderant one is that job satisfaction gives people a sense of fulfillment and there are numerous other benefits in various fields. Hence, it is apparent why many are in favor of job satisfaction . In the views of the arguments outlined above, one can conclude that the benefits of job satisfaction are indeed too great to ignore.

Here, there is a widespread worry and leads to a concern. People are worrying that low salary is a concern. However, I do not entirely accept because low salary is fine for me as long as I get job satisfaction. Please make a note of this point. Since we are not agreeing, always mention the negative point in the introduction and the contradicting point should be positive in body paragraph1. In this way, you can follow the same template for any essay in PTE writing. Also you will not go out of the topic.

Big salary is much more important than job satisfaction. I am going to mention low salary is disadvantage instead of big salary is advantage. Because I am going to support points for job satisfaction. Big salary is not important for me compared to job satisfaction. Therefore, I am mentioning big salary as negative point. Myriad – is an academic vocabulary. We have enough vocabularies in this template like this.

There are number of arguments in favour of my stance. Most preponderant one is that job satisfaction… here job satisfaction is a contradicting point to low salary. Wide range of advantages, benefit, broaden their horizons – These are all supporting points to this sentence. Hence it is apparent why many are in favour of job satisfaction. In conclusion also job satisfaction are indeed too great to ignore. After replacing the points just read the entire essay once again to make sure that the points are fit to the template in terms of content and grammar. And also check the spelling mistakes if any. Here we are getting 227 words and it is totally fine.

Discuss two opinions

Some people point that experiential learning can work well in formal education. However, others think a traditional form of teaching is the best. Do you think experiential learning can work well in high schools or colleges?

What type of essay is this? ‘Experiential learning and traditional form of teaching’. So two points mentioned here and ‘Do you think’ is asking our opinion. So discuss two opinions is the prompt.

Again mention which one you don’t support in the introduction paragraph, but negatively. People believing that experiential learning is best compared to traditional way of education. Here I am mentioning traditional way of education is not the best as negatively. And it is mentioned as concern to people but I am not accepting it. I am supporting experiential learning is the best. Hence, mention some points of experiential learning in body paragraph1. In body paragraph2, it is apparent why many are in favour of experiential learning and even in conclusion as well. Read the entire essay once for proofreading.

Using Template One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that experiential learning is best compared to traditional way of education . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. There are a number of arguments in favor of my stance. Most preponderant one is that experiential way of learning provides practical knowledge and there are numerous other benefits in various fields. Hence, it is apparent why many are in favor of experiential learning . In the views of the arguments outlined above, one can conclude that the benefits of experiential learning are indeed too great to ignore.

Some universities deduct students’ marks if work is given late. What is your opinion and recommend some alternative actions for this problem?

Here it is mentioned as problem and asking for solution. Recommend some alternative actions – solution. So it should be problems and solutions. Negative point of the topic – already the topic itself has some negative point – Deduct students’ marks. Mention it in introduction.

People believing that some universities reduce students’ marks for late submission of their assignments. Is this a concern? No I do not entirely accept this. Because students learn to manage time. Here it is not necessary to provide new solution. Time management is the solution here. Remember that we can write an essay in PTE writing section using many different ideas. But the structure and relevant information are the key to score more points. In body paragraph2, it is in favour of time management and in conclusion as well.

Using Template One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that some universities reduce students’ marks for late submission of their assignments . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. There are a number of arguments in favor of my stance. Most preponderant one is that students learn how to manage time and there are numerous other benefits in various fields. Causes and Effects

The time people devote in job leaves very little time for personal life. How widespread is the problem? What problem will this shortage of time cause?

Here also there is a problem statement but here solution is not asked. What effects will this problem can create? So causes and effects is the prompt here. Shortage of time for personal life leads to many family problems – negative side of the topic.

Explain why this is not a problem – in long term perspective one can achieve high standard of living, variations in lifestyle, luxurious life with the family – these are the effects, positive effects. There are negative effects as well such as disputes among families, stress and depression due to lot of work but that is not required to mention. And in body paragraph2, mention why many are in favour of – spending less time for family. Same point in conclusion as well.

Using Template One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that shortage of time for personal life leads to many family problems . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. With the increase of digital media available online, the role of the library has become obsolete. Universities should only procure digital media rather than constantly updating textbooks. Discuss both the advantages and disadvantages.

So we have to discuss both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of digital media outweighs drawbacks in library is the negative point. So the contradicting point is digital media provides latest information in one click. Therefore, many are in favour of digital media. Simple.

Using Template One of the conspicuous trends of today’s world is a colossal upsurge in the number of people believing that advantages of digital media outweighs the drawbacks of traditional way of reading in the library . There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in one’s life. However, I do not entirely accept this and I will explain why in this essay. So this is how we can use the same template for all types of essays. Read the topic, write the template quickly in the textbox and then modify the topic sentence and supporting points. Finally verify if everything is correct. However if you still have dilemma whether you can use the template or not, you can use the method, which we will discuss now. Before moving on to the method, we will quickly see some tips and strategies to avoid any mistakes and utilize the 20 minutes time wisely.

PTE Essay Writing Tips and Strategies

Before you start writing, you need to plan what you are going to write. Read the topic and plan your ideas in the first 2 minutes. Gather some relevant points, your experience related to the topic and some supporting points if any. Take 15 minutes to write and review in the last 3 minutes. This will save you from having to stop and restart from the beginning. Check the grammar and spelling mistakes if any. You have to read the entire essay, word by word to make sure error free text and get full points in grammar and spelling.

Always use the structure and limit the number of lines. Introduction, 2 body paragraphs and a conclusion. This will do to write around 230 to 260 words, which is more than enough. But how will you check if you will be able to complete your essay in PTE writing within the word limit. Though you can see the word count at the bottom, even when you complete the first body paragraph itself, sometimes you will be reaching around 180 to 200 words. Therefore, limit the number of lines for each paragraph as mentioned below.

Introduction – not more than 2 lines. Body paragraphs – 3 and 1/2 to 4 lines each. Conclusion – 1 to 1 and 1/2 lines.

This itself will bring you around 270 words. Here I am just talking about the number of lines based on the textbox given in the PTE test. In each line we can write around 25 to 30 words. Therefore, for 10 lines we can easily get around 260 to 270 words. Don’t write many points in body paragraph1 itself. Then you need to reduce your points in paragraph2. If you reach up to 4 sentences in first paragraph then complete the sentence and start writing the next paragraph. Believe me! You can save much time if you follow this strategy.

Avoid very long sentences. The more you extend your sentences, the more likely you will be to make grammar and punctuation errors. Make it simple and clear. Use complex sentences though but not very big sentences. Build your vocabulary skill by reading newspapers or hearing BBC news channel without video. Hear only the audio news to concentrate more.

Let us see how you have to structure your essay using the method.

PTE Essay Writing Method

Even in the method as well, you have to stick to the structure to get more points in written discourse. Always start with introduction, 2 body paragraphs and a conclusion.

Introduction Let us have a look on how to write the introduction. For introduction, just paraphrase the topic sentence and add a supporting point. You can start the introduction as, It is often argued that, It is commonly believed that etc.

Body Paragraph1 Start the first body paragraph as To begin with, First of all or Firstly. And then continue the paragraph with supporting points using Secondly and Finally.

Body Paragraph2 Start the second paragraph with Nevertheless or However with some contradicting points for the first paragraph and mention how it can be resolved. You can also extend your second paragraph by supporting the paragraph1 instead of arguing against it using Moreover or Furthermore.

In addition, support your points with some examples. You can include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. Start the example using For instance, To illustrate, In my own experience etc. If you support your points with examples, you will get more points to add and you can easily make it relevant to the topic.

Conclusion Finally, write the conclusion as In conclusion or To conclude, and mention which statement is most convincing to support the topic sentence.

Each of these paragraphs need only a few sentences to clearly get your point. And finally proofread your content to make sure you don’t do any spelling or grammar mistakes. Now we will see how to use the method for this topic. We have already seen this example using template. Apply all the points that we discussed now.

Big salary is much more important than job satisfaction. Do you agree or disagree? Provide relevant examples if necessary.

Use the below structure.

It is often argued that First of all, For example, Secondly, For instance, Thus, In conclusion,

Using Method It is often argued that it is more advantageous to choose a job with high wage, even if it does not appeal to you at all. I completely disagree with this opinion and think that job satisfaction is much more important than salary. First of all, I believe that job satisfaction gives people a sense of fulfillment that no money can guarantee. Even if someone is earning a high salary but feels tensed, this person would not enjoy his life. While pursuing one’s interests will always bring pleasure and feeling of satisfaction. For example, a lot of famous researchers made their career choices not because of appealing wages, but because they were passionate about science. That is why it is more important to choose the kind of work that makes you happy than to look only at a high salary. Secondly, doing what you like keeps you motivated and therefore leads to a career growth. In other words, there is a strong relation between job satisfaction and productivity. People who love their jobs can easily excel in their fields of work than those, who put salary on the first place. For instance, in my company many people are working for more than 25 years despite a good wage. Consequently, others moved out for high salary but struggling to achieve better results. Thus, advantages of jobs that keep you satisfied outweigh the drawback of low salary in a long-term perspective. In conclusion, I strongly believe that job satisfaction is more beneficial than high salary because it makes people happy and motivated.

So this is how it should be. Paraphrase the introduction – instead of more important you can mention as more advantageous. Don’t use abbreviations and colloquial language. Always expand the words and maintain academic English. Here I am disagreeing the statement of big salary, adding points for job satisfaction and the supporting points with examples using my own experience and then the conclusion part. Here I did not use much vocabularies but use atleast few words. So this is how we can use the method. And don’t forget to proofread your essay.

Allow one space between each paragraph. This is not mandatory but leaving one space will be good to show the completion of the paragraph. And you can use delete or backspace button anytime. That is not a problem. You can correct your content until you write error free essay. You can paste this sample in pte.tools to check how many lines we will get for 260 words in the real exam. 1 and 1/2 lines for introduction, 3 to 4 lines for body paragraphs and 1 line for conclusion and we got 260 words. This is how you can limit the number of words based on number of lines.

Sentences to increase the word count

Here are some sentences that I have gathered from some sample essays. This helps to bring you some ideas related to the topic using which you can build your own points. I always add two or more sentences from this list in my essays, which save my time while thinking about the ideas.

  • Helps the country’s economy to be stable.
  • The research is quite possibly biased on one side.
  • It is the government that needs to take measures to ameliorate such problems.
  • Admittedly, this may be cumbersome to administer, however, an attempt could be made to get it off the ground.
  • Attempts should be made to redress the imbalance.
  • It is often the case that people would rather not use.
  • I would argue there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that this is not the case, and, therefore, steps must be taken to improve it.
  • Which socio-economic group consumes more (either lower income people or wealthier people).
  • Governments offer large subsidies to farmers.
  • It is destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter writing, telephone and face-to-face conversation.
  • The children accessing unsuitable websites and viruses is inevitable.
  • An ocean of opportunities.
  • In conclusion, despite the fact that there are benefits.

Brush up these sentences before going to the exam and try to remember as much as possible.

That’s all I have for essays. Use the 20 minutes time wisely for understanding the topic and plan your ideas in the first 2 minutes, write the essay within 13 to 15 minutes, review and correct it in the last 3 minutes. Also, write only a maximum of 10 lines. Introduction – 2 lines, body paragraphs – 3 to 4 lines each and conclusion – 1 to 1 and 1/2 lines. Along with checking on the word count, you can count the lines and structure your essay in this way.

Paraphrase the topic in the introduction, highlight the supporting points and contradicting points in body paragraphs with some examples in your own experience and then conclude with some solution or on one side of the topic depends upon what type of topic that you get. Remember that anyone can write the essay within the given timeframe if they have the right tools. I hope with these information, writing an essay will be very easy for you. Thank you for reading my post till the end.

Effective PTE essay writing template for maximum scores

Now that you know why templates are beneficial and the various essay types you might encounter, let’s delve into an effective PTE essay writing template that can help you score maximum points.

In general, each type of prompt has a different template to follow. However, it is normally based on a fixed essay skeleton including Introduction , Body paragraph , and Conclusion .  Below is the model outline you can consider:

Introduction (about 40-50 words)

In this part, you need to:

  • Start with a hook or a general statement related to the topic, remember to paraphrase the requirement.
  • Clearly state your thesis or main point.
  • Provide a brief overview of the points you will discuss.

Body paragraph (about 200 words)

This part often contains two single paragraphs. Each of them is about 100 words in length. The structure of the body can include:

  • Topic sentence: Begin each paragraph with a clear topic sentence that connects to your thesis.
  • Explanation (about 1-2 sentences): You need to give some reasons explicating your point. Don’t forget to use transition words to connect your ideas and maintain a smooth flow.
  • Supporting details (Optional): After explanation, it’s essential to provide evidence, examples, or statistics to support your topic sentence. With these details, your idea can be clarified better.
  • Counterargument (Optional): Last but not least, you can address opposing viewpoints and explain why they are less valid. This sentence would strengthen your statement, and make it more persuadable.

Conclusion (about 40-50 words)

At the end of all writing, a conclusion is unavoidable. This part asks you to:

  • Summarize your main points.
  • Restate your thesis or main point in another expression way.
  • Provide a closing thought or call to action related to the topic.

Above is the general format of the PTE essay. You also need to adapt this template to the specific essay type you’re writing.

For instance, an argumentative essay will require a stronger emphasis on presenting and refuting opposing views, while the agree and disagree article will focus more on expressing your viewpoint.

Notice that the given structure is for reference. You don’t need to follow it 100% when writing as long as you make sure that your ideas are supported well.

Advantages and disadvantages essay

Prompt: “Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of online learning”

Paraphrase: The rise of online learning is a revelation of education, but it also raises pertinent questions regarding its advantages and disadvantages. In this essay, we will explore both sides of the online learning debate.

Body paragraph 1 (About advantages)

Topic sentence: Firstly, let’s look into some pros of online education.

Pros 1: Online learning offers flexibility and convenience. Learners can access courses from anywhere at their own pace. This flexibility accommodates diverse schedules and lifestyles. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, students still can access education via online learning platforms.

Pros 2:  Online learning reduces geographical barriers. It allows access to top-notch courses and instructors worldwide. This democratizes education and promotes inclusivity. For instance, people in Vietnam can easily take part in a workshop in the US on the Internet.

Body paragraph 2 (About disadvantages)

Topic sentence: Although it provides many advantages, online learning also has some side effects.

Cons 1: Online learning lacks the social interaction of traditional classrooms. Students miss out on face-to-face interactions and group dynamics. This can hinder the development of social skills and a sense of community.

Cons 2: Learning on the internet requires students to have suitable devices to connect. But not all students have that good life conditions. Poor people or those who live in remote areas would find it really difficult to access.

In conclusion, online learning presents a mixed bag of advantages and disadvantages. Its flexibility and accessibility are game-changers, but the absence of physical interaction and potential isolation are important considerations. A balanced approach to education must harness the best of both worlds.

Problems and solutions essay

Prompt: “Discuss the problem of air pollution in urban areas and propose solutions.”

Paraphrase: Air pollution in urban areas is a pressing issue with far-reaching consequences.

We will examine some causes and effects of this problem and propose effective solutions in this essay.

Body paragraph 1 (mention a cause and offer a solution for it) :

Cause: Urban air pollution is primarily caused by vehicle emissions. More and more cars are used nowadays, combined with the inadequate public transportation systems, elevating pollution in urban on the next level.

Solution: To solve this problem, it’s crucial to reduce vehicle emissions. Instead of driving cars, people can walk or use public transportation. In addition, the government implements strict emissions standards to control this problem.

Body paragraph 2:

Cause: In many areas of the world, millions of square kilometers of forest have been destroyed for human personal purposes. Forests are also considered as the green lungs of the earth. Lack of this natural shield, the air becomes more vulnerable.

Solution: People should protect and strive to cultivate more trees in the world. Moreover, the government also can intervene by enforcing strict regulations on deforestation.

In conclusion, urban air pollution is a multifaceted problem, but it is not insurmountable. As long as we take action to maintain and protect the air, cities can breathe easier and provide a healthier environment for their residents.

PTE Essay Writing Guide

PTE essays are a form of exam testing that will assess every facet of your writing skills and ability.

PTE essays have become one of the more frequent standardised tests that assess writing competency over the years. You can expect to complete at least one PTE essay during your studies.

Whilst PTE essays can seem daunting, and many myths have arisen around the difficulty or perceived difficulty of PTE writing, the reality is that, for someone who is well prepared, a PTE essay can be completed with relative ease and very minimal fuss.

We will be going through the ins and outs of PTE essays, discussing what they are strict, how to prepare for them, and avoiding some of the common pitfalls around PTE essay writing, as well as a general FAQ around PTE essays and the writing process.

It is hoped that having read through this guide, you will have both the confidence and the preparation needed to conquer the PTE essay process.

Firstly, we will be discussing exactly what PTE essays are, their purpose, and how they assess your writing competency and proficiency.

What are PTE essays?

PTE essays encourage robust debate and testing of your writing skillset and creative content writing. They are centralised on one contentious topic and require the answer to be either agree or disagree or provide some form of affirmative.

A vast majority of PTE essay subjects are based solely on contentious political and social issues that are currently present in this day and age. They encourage lively writing while testing conclusions and essays based on an answer.

Some example subjects that could be used in a PTE essay are:

  • Centralised cities are constantly increasing in population to the detriment of regional areas. Should the government encourage people to be decentralised to these areas?
  • Do you agree with the statement, “Children spend too much time playing computer games”? List your reasons why
  • Politicians are increasingly bringing forest management or clearing up to minimise the threat of a major bushfire. Do you agree or disagree that this is viable?
  • Political advertising on social media is increasing each year. Should there be intervention to bring social media political ads more in line with traditional media restrictions?
  • Should children be learning phonics in Australian classrooms? List the advantages and disadvantages
  • Do you agree or disagree that privately built toll roads are more deserving of government funding than public transport? List your reasons as to why
  • Does coal mining still have a future, even in a carbon-neutral environment? Do you agree or disagree?

If you need an idea on how to write for respective topics, browse our list of PTE essay writing topics with answers .

PTE writing is a test of your skills, both in the course of a debate, as well as the cohesiveness of your skills to answer the question directly with supportive arguments. They are a more significant test of how your skills have progressed throughout the course, your understanding of the course itself, and what skills you may or may not need to have specifically updated.

PTE assessors will be looking to test essential skills, such as how fast you can write to a quick brief or topic, general grammar and spelling proficiency, and the structure of the narrative you are creating based on the PTE essay topic. Any updated skills taught in more recent classes may also be focused on, so make sure that that is also a part of your preparation.

They will also be looking to test out your writing process, how you structure your arguments as well as the body of your content, as well as the language that you use, the strength of your ideas, and the overall strength of the piece of work that you produce for the PTE test.

PTE tests can be stressful, and you should remember that it is not unusual to feel stressed about a very complex and challenging task from the onset.

PTE writing, however, need not be a daunting affair and, as mentioned, can involve a lot of creative writing skills that would otherwise not be used. This creative writing can be used to form a sound argument, one that is not just direct and readable but also one that is persuasive in your favour.

Preparing for a PTE essay

PTE essays, like many other tertiary level exams, are a text of the skills you have learnt in the subject and to which you have honed them.

Therefore, as with any other exam, you would practice the skill set. Practicing writing, however, can be difficult, especially if you are void of ideas for inspiration. Updating your preparation for the PTE exam may also be difficult, mainly if you have never conducted such an exam.

One good way to practice such an essay is to list potential subject matters and write opening and conclusion statements for each. This will not just get your head into the PTE writing process but will also prepare you for the agree or disagree, find a solution and debatory content that you will ultimately address.

By also writing a list of subject topics, it is more likely than not that you will be gearing yourself up to answer the actual question that will be featured on the exam paper.

Research is also crucial, and even though, in some cases, you will not know what is on the PTE test until the day of the test itself, research can still be conducted that will benefit you and the overall writing process.

Start by thinking about what type of topics you are most likely to answer for the PTE test, and go forward by breaking those up into broader and larger groups. Research not necessarily what those subjects are but similar PTE papers that fall under these more giant umbrellas.

Study the arguments made, study how the ideas have been formed, and note down what you can not just incorporate into your writing process but also the broader writing style and process that was incorporated into these topics. Ensure that your understanding of these topics has been updated according to what you’ve seen.

Even news articles that cover these topics can be helpful, as though they do not present an argument per se, they do illustrate the facts and reasoning of those involved in the issue in generalised terms.

Knowing these terms will help you craft whatever argument you may need to accomplish in the PTE academic exam.

Creative PTE essay writing template

Whilst it is deliberately designed to address one focal point directly, PTE essay writing does include a considerable degree of creative writing. This creative aspect of the PTE essay will ultimately help you not just form a more persuasive argument but also stop you from repeating yourself or making your essay less concise.

A list of things that can help you throughout the creative process are:

  • Expand on your reasons, providing examples, both factual and lived
  • Using these examples, create a narrative that will help to define your argument
  • Use dot points to summarise any minute details, such as advantages to your argued topic or disadvantages to a contrasting point of view
  • Refer to as many factual references that you have found through your research
  • Use these references to help create a story that will summarise your main argument

Creative writing in the PTE essay process will not just help to underline your subject, but it will also help to make the overall essay much more enjoyable and entertaining to read. Doing this will also add plausibility to your message, helping to assert the overall message you are trying to convey.

In any PTE academic exam or writing assessment situation, you should always aim to incorporate an element of creative writing. Creative writing is a great way to enhance your argument and make it more persuasive and help you expand your ideas.

For really complex topics, incorporating creative writing and thought processes into your PTE academic exam will allow you greater flexibility during the overall writing process. Creative writing will ensure that your body content is coherent and compelling, allowing you to incorporate structure into the general paper much more quickly.

Avoiding common pitfalls throughout PTE essay writing

Writer’s block is accurate and can often raise its head during PTE essay writing. For many, writer’s block can often stop the argument from forming and halting any reasonable approach you may have had to write a convincing and compelling essay for your PTE subject.

Avoiding this cannot be easy, and whilst everyone has their ways of dealing with such circumstances, some common patterns that can help you to avoid stumbling during the writing process are:

  • Keep your main arguments listed in dot point form before starting the essay, and refer to them throughout
  • Always conduct as much research as possible into the various topics that you may be given for the exam sitting
  • Structure in your mind what arguments you will be marking for the opening, the body, and the conclusion of the essay itself
  • Break down the essay topic as much as possible, preferably into more minor subjects if you can
  • Have your closing argument settled before writing, and focus on writing towards the conclusion as if it were a goal

Essay topics, too, can be tough to answer, especially ones based on a social or political issue. It will always help you keep an open mind regarding whatever essay topic you have been given for your PTE writing, as this will allow you to explore your mind and the arguments you will be making.

Another common aspect that affects those who undergo the PTE Academic exam is repetition and redundancy in the writing process. Writing a piece that repeats itself is often the death knell of any assessment paper, as you will lose the more significant point of your argument, no matter how solid or concise your conclusion is.

Avoiding repeating yourself can be difficult, especially in the more significant arena of the test atmosphere when you are under pressure to write to both a brief and a time limit. However, there are a few things that you can do to avoid redundant writing.

One of these is to have a plan in your mind of which sub-topics you will be arguing for underneath the overall more remarkable essay topic. Having this in the context of a list, and one where your issues will be outlined, will not just help you avoid repeating yourself but also provide your paper with structure and an organised argument.

Writer’s block and redundant writing can often occur hand-in-hand and indicate poor planning, preparation, and a general unease with the situation and process behind PTE academic exam writing.

These common pitfalls will be avoided by ensuring that your preparation is ideal and comprehensive and that all bases are covered throughout your research. Should they occur, despite good practice, remember to fall back on your notes, lists, and overall preparation before the exam.

Other considerations for essay writing

Ultimately, the PTE academic exam should be considered mainly as a way in which you can not just get a handle on where your current skill set is but also one where you can enhance and advance these same skills to your betterment for both your course and your chosen career.

So, embrace it. It’s ideal for treating the PTE test as something that isn’t daunting but as a way to explore your skills and competencies. On top of this, you may find through writing a PTE academic exam a topic or a subject for which you have a passion, and it may provide you with a more concise idea of what you want to do as a career.

There are a lot of advantages to treating such a test in this manner, chiefly in that it will help to promote a positive attitude with which you can approach the overall exam itself.

Having a positive mindset, especially for what is undoubtedly a challenging examination, will allow you to avoid some of the common pitfalls that we mentioned before and allow you to write naturally and in a compelling manner.

Ultimately, however, you should always remind yourself that this is a chance for you to share just how competent you are and how far you have progressed throughout the course. Write essay questions test your ability to write a persuasive or argumentative essay.

Here are some key points about Write essay questions:

  • They assess your writing skills, as well as your grammar, vocabulary, spelling and written discourse.
  • You’ll be presented with an essay question and have 20 minutes to write your essay.
  • You need to write between 200 and 300 words.
  • You’ll answer 1–2  Write essay  questions in the writing test.

Here’s an example Write essay question.

You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judged on how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elements of standard written English. You should write 200-300 words. ‘Governments should provide everyone with free healthcare.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement? Provide reasons and/or examples to support your ideas.

This particular question is asking the extent to which you agree with the statement given. According to the official information about the PTE, in Write essay questions, you could be asked to:

  • agree or disagree with a statement;
  • argue for or against an opinion;
  • discuss advantages and/or disadvantages; or
  • discuss problems and solutions.

However, this isn’t exactly an official list of Write essay question types, so you need to be prepared to answer any question you may be asked on test day.

There are seven scoring criteria for Write essay questions.

NOTE: US, UK, Canadian and Australian spelling conventions are all recognised, but you need to use your chosen convention consistently in your response.

Here’s my recommended approach for answering Write essay questions. We’ll use the example question to go through the steps you need to take.

IMPORTANT: The overall approach is the same for all Write essay questions (i.e. not just ones that ask whether you agree or disagree with a statement). This is important because, on test day, you could get a question that asks you something you weren’t expecting. However, if you learn and practise applying the overall approach, you should be able to respond flexibly to any question you’re presented with.

Step 1  >  Analyse the question

The first step is to analyse the question. This is crucial – if you don’t take the time to analyse the question properly, you may misunderstand what it’s asking you or fail to respond to key parts of the question. Here’s our question prompt again.

You can see that we’ve been presented with a fairly straightforward opinion (i.e. that governments should provide everyone with free healthcare), and we’re being asked the extent to which we agree.

IMPORTANT: Write essay questions can be worded in different ways. For example, here’s a couple of different ways that a question asking you to agree or disagree with a statement could be worded: To what extent do you agree with this statement? How far do you agree with this statement?

Step 2  >  Make a quick plan

Once you fully understand the question and what you’re required to do, the next step is to make a quick plan for your essay. You’re only given 20 minutes for each Write essay question, which includes planning, writing and revising, so I recommend only spending 1–2 minutes making a plan. During the planning stage, all you really need to come up with is two ideas (i.e. one for each body paragraph). For the example question, we need to think of two reasons why we agree or two reasons why we disagree. Notice that the question asks To what extent we agree with the statement. This makes it perfectly acceptable to choose a middle position (i.e. partly agree and partly disagree), but this makes the essay much harder to write, so I recommend just choosing one side. Choose the side that you can think of the clearest arguments for. If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, try asking yourself these questions:

  • What are the most obvious ideas?
  • If you asked 100 people for their ideas, what do you think most of them would say?

All you really need to include in your plan is your overall position and the ideas for your body paragraphs. You can write down any examples or details that come to mind easily, but don’t worry if they don’t. Given the very limited time available for Write essay questions, it simply isn’t possible to write a detailed plan. Our plan for the example question might look something like this.

For the example question, we had to think of two reasons. However, the type of ideas you need to come up with will depend on the specific question you’re asked. Here are some common question types and the kind of ideas you’d need to come up with for each one.

Step 3  >  Write the introduction

Now that we’ve thought of ideas for our essay and made a plan, it’s time to write the introduction. PTE doesn’t specify what you need to include in your introduction – and what you include will inevitably depend on the specific question you’re being asked – but for an essay question like in our example, I recommend that you include:

  • a paraphrase of the statement given in the question;
  • a statement about whether you agree or disagree, including an outline of your reasons.

Let’s look at each of these parts one by one.

1. A paraphrase of the statement given in the question

An easy and effective way to start your introduction is to paraphrase the statement given in the question. At this stage, don’t state whether you agree or disagree – we’ll do that in the second part of the introduction. Keep in mind that you mustn’t copy the exact wording used in the question. Instead, you need to use synonyms and other forms of paraphrasing. You won’t be able find synonyms for everything. In fact, some words shouldn’t be replaced because doing so would change the meaning. Our paraphrase could be something like this: Some people argue that governments should be responsible for covering their citizens’ healthcare costs.

2. A statement about whether you agree or disagree, including an outline of your reasons

In the second part of the introduction, you should clearly state whether you agree or disagree and give your two reasons for holding this view. You can usually do this in a single sentence. Remember that the question is asking for your opinion, so don’t be afraid to use personal language such as I agree or I think . An easy way to introduce your reasons is to use because . For our question, we could write something like this: I wholeheartedly agree with this view because free healthcare makes society more equal and improves health outcomes.

If we put the two parts of the introduction together, this is what we have.

Some people argue that governments should be responsible for covering their citizens’ healthcare costs. I wholeheartedly agree with this view because free healthcare makes society more equal and improves health outcomes.

Step 4  >  Write the body paragraphs

The next step is to write the body paragraphs. The first body paragraph should be about your first reason and the second body paragraph should be about your second reason. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that clearly states the reason that is the focus of that paragraph. Here are some possible body paragraphs for our example.

First of all, universal healthcare creates more social equality. In countries without universal healthcare, such as the United States, people from low socioeconomic backgrounds often avoid seeking medical care due to the prohibitive costs involved. This makes society unequal. However, when financial barriers to healthcare services are removed, individuals gain equal access to quality healthcare regardless of their financial status. This ensures that the most vulnerable members of society are able to receive essential medical attention and preventive care, which is a basic human right. Free healthcare also improves the health of the general population. When people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have to pay for healthcare services, they are more likely to delay treatment or not seek treatment at all. In contrast, when healthcare is provided free by governments, people are more willing to make appointments with their doctor. These appointments may uncover the existence of health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, which can then be properly treated by the doctor. By enabling the early detection of such chronic conditions through free healthcare, governments improve the general health of their citizens, which can even lower the costs of the healthcare system over time as fewer and fewer people require ongoing care for chronic conditions.

Step 5  >  Write the conclusion

The next step is to write the conclusion. All you need to do here is restate your opinion and your two reasons (or whatever you covered in the body paragraphs). Don’t just copy the words you used in other parts of the essay – use synonyms and paraphrasing as much as you can. Start your conclusion with In conclusion or To conclude . Here’s a possible conclusion for our example.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that governments should ensure that all of their citizens have access to free healthcare. It creates more equality in society and leads to better health outcomes at the population level.

Step 6  >  Check your work

The final step is to check your work. At this stage, you won’t have time to make any major changes, but it’s still an important step. Things to check for:

  • whether you’ve used an adequate range of grammar and vocabulary;
  • your word count.

Now it’s your turn to practise. Try the Write essay questions below using the approach outlined above.

You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judged on how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elements of standard written English. You should write 200-300 words. ‘There should be a special tax on sugary drinks to make them more expensive and discourage people from consuming them.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement? Provide reasons and/or examples to support your ideas.

Some people believe that sugary drinks should be subject to a special tax in order to reduce their consumption. I agree with this approach because it would improve health outcomes and generate additional revenue, which could then be spent on health-related initiatives.

Firstly, implementing a special tax on sugary drinks would benefit the health of the general population. High sugar intake from these drinks has been unequivocally linked to health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and dental problems. By raising the cost of these beverages through taxation, consumption and therefore sugar intake would decrease. Over time, this reduced consumption would lower the prevalence of chronic health conditions in the population. This would of course benefit individuals, but it would also gradually reduce the cost of the healthcare system as fewer and fewer people would require ongoing care for such conditions.

Not only would a special tax on sugary drinks lead to health benefits at the individual and population levels, but it would also generate additional revenue for the government. This newfound revenue could be used for a range purposes, including to upgrade hospital facilities and improve healthcare systems more generally. It could also be used to fund health promotion campaigns. For example, with the revenue raised from sugary drinks, the government could develop advertisements for television and social media to inform the public about the detrimental health effects of excessive sugar consumption.

You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judged on how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elements of standard written English. You should write 200-300 words. Some people believe that homework is an important part of children’s education. Others say that children should not be given homework. Explain where your opinion lies between these points of view, giving reasons and/or examples as justification.

Despite homework being a common component of children’s education, not everyone agrees on its value. While some people believe that children should not be required to do homework, I generally side with those who support its use because it reinforces classroom learning and teaches children discipline.

Firstly, homework serves as a crucial extension of classroom learning, offering children the opportunity to reinforce and apply the knowledge acquired at school. Through the completion of homework assignments, children can actively engage with academic material, turning theoretical concepts into practical understanding. For example, if they have been introduced to a scientific concept in class, their homework might involve conducting a hands-on experiment at home. This not only cements their comprehension of the subject matter, but also fosters a deeper connection with the material, creating a more holistic learning experience.

Regular completion of homework also helps instil discipline. As children learn to manage their time effectively and meet deadlines, they develop key skills that can be applied later in life. The discipline cultivated through consistent homework completion not only prepares children for the rigorous demands of future studies, but also equips them with a strong work ethic that will prove beneficial in their future careers. In this way, homework serves as a training ground for the responsibilities and expectations that they will encounter beyond the classroom.

You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judged on how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elements of standard written English. You should write 200-300 words. Some people choose to be self-employed rather than work for an employer. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of being self-employed?

The vast majority of people work as employees in a company, but a growing number of people are making the decision to work for themselves. While being self-employed has its benefits, there are also significant drawbacks.

There are clear advantages to being self-employed. First of all, those who run their own businesses are usually free to set their own schedules. Unlike employees, there is no requirement for them to work 9 to 5, so those who are more productive in the afternoon, for example, can simply start their workday later. In addition, the self-employed can pick and choose the projects they want to work on and the clients they want to work with. For instance, if a client is fussy or otherwise difficult to work with, business owners can opt not to work with them again. This can give self-employed people a sense of control over their work lives.

However, the disadvantages cannot be ignored. A significant drawback is the fact that people who work for themselves tend to have irregular income. This can have a detrimental impact on many aspects of their lives, including their ability to make long-term plans and apply for a mortgage. In addition, those who run their own businesses are not entitled to annual leave and sick pay. Even though self-employed people can take time off if they wish to, in practice they rarely do because of fear of losing clients and income. This situation can negatively impact their physical and mental well-being.

You will have 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic below. Your response will be judged on how well you develop a position, organize your ideas, present supporting details, and control the elements of standard written English. You should write 200-300 words. In many countries, it has become difficult for young people to afford to buy their own home. Why is this the case and what can be done about this problem?

In many parts of the world, it has become very challenging for younger generations to be able to purchase a home of their own. There is a variety of reasons for this, but steps can certainly be taken to tackle the issue.

Several factors are to blame for the financial difficulty young people face when trying to buy a home. Firstly, population growth in many countries has led to greater competition among buyers, which drives up prices. In parallel, there is often too little construction taking place, which makes the situation worse as supply cannot keep up with demand. As prices have increased, it has become increasingly difficult for younger buyers to save for a deposit, which effectively locks them out of the housing market.

There are ways that this issue could be addressed. One solution is for governments to offer young people grants to help them afford their first home. Governments could place conditions on any such grant. For example, they could require that the property be a newly constructed one or that the money only be used to purchase a property in a regional area. Another way to deal with this issue is for governments to release more land for residential construction and offer builders financial incentives. This would help with the supply side of the equation. If there were more properties available, prices would inevitably come down.

It can not only influence their learning capabilities but also helps in creating a foundation for their career. For instance, BCM Secondary school, which is situated in ludhiana, has multiple sections including a small number of students so that each learner gets the desired attention from the instructor. Moreover, private schools offer students a wide variety of extra-curricular activities which keeps the learners engaged and active at the same time.

Also, it can divide society into two different kinds which can have a negative effect on the relations of kids as well as their parents. To encapsulate, attaining higher education from a private organization can immensely upscale the education of a student but at the same time, it may lead to some circumstances that can deteriorate the relations in the community.

PTE Writing Sample Question: 2

Successful sports stars and glamorous film stars are role models for youngsters. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

It is believed by many that celebrities leave an ever-lasting impression on teenagers and act as role models for young people. In my view, these superstars can majorly impact one's life and motivate one to work towards their goals.

With the advancement of technology and social media platforms, one can easily get to know what a film star is up to and constantly see their progress. Due to this, teenagers can see all the projects that a celebrity is working on and it can motivate them to work hard as well on their goals. Moreover, the boldness and courage of these artists encourage children to showcase their talent as well. For instance, Arijit Singh, who is one of the best singers in India, recently organized a challenge in which his fans had to sing any one of his songs and post them on Instagram. This trend not only helped the youngsters to showcase their talent but also helped them gain popularity as the singer reacted to the different submissions.

Moreover, there are a lot of documentaries and interviews held in which the celebrities share their life story and elaborate on how they worked hard for their careers. As a result, this makes a young person realize the hardships of life and the value of determination. In addition, sports stars influence the younger generation to stay active and energetic by exercising daily rather than being couch potatoes. To exemplify, Virat Kohli, a cricketer in the Indian cricket team, recently launched his fitness app in which people can set up a workout routine for themselves.

To conclude, it can undeniably be said that film stars and sportspersons are shaping the minds of youngsters these days and leading them in the right direction.

With the advent of technology, a plethora of people have gained access to smartphones and internet browsers; however, it has distanced the senior citizens when it comes to learning all the new updates. There are numerous ways in which old people can make use of smartphones and there are a lot of techniques to motivate them to inculcate the use of these gadgets.

PTE Writing Sample Question: 4

Some people prefer to play team sports, while others prefer to play individual sports. Discuss the advantages of each. Then indicate which you prefer and why?

Numerous individuals prefer to play sports which consist of different teams whereas others like to go for sports in which players have to perform individually. Both methods have respective merits but in my view, team sports tend to inculcate a plethora of values in a sportsperson.

On the one hand, playing with your teammates makes one realize the importance of collective effort and unity because the overall success is due to the hard work and determination of the team. Also, it instills values such as cooperation, understanding, bonding and group effort to name a few. For instance, sports such as hockey and cricket are a prime reference that winning is attained by the collective effort and strategies followed by the whole team. In addition, various parents encourage their wards to participate in group sports so that their children can learn social skills as well as team spirit.

On the other hand, sports involving a single player can hone one's skills and lead one towards perfection. It not only makes one responsible for their success but also creates a mindset of competitiveness, which can help one to grow in their respective field of sport. Furthermore, it makes one a specialist in their endeavor and one is known for their extreme hard work and determination. For illustration, Viswanathan Anand, who is a renowned chess player in Indian history is known for his sharp mind and his quick responses in the game of chess.

In my opinion, team sports are responsible for personal as well as the overall growth of a player and make one realize the importance of other people's efforts as well. Moreover, it also teaches us to celebrate success collectively.

To conclude, there are numerous benefits of playing group sports as well as individually; however, I believe that it is team sports which makes an individual grow and respect other players as well.

PTE Writing Sample Question: 5

It is argued that getting married before finishing school or getting a job is not a good choice. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is believed by many that one should get married after completing higher education or when one is earning well. I completely agree with the given notion as one should have a financial foundation before starting a new life with their partner.

It is highly preferred that one should finish their education before getting married as education builds one's future and career, as it lays down the foundation of an individual's dreams and ambitions. Also, an individual tends to shift their focus from studying to earning if they get married at an early stage of their life. For instance,  a plethora of people drop out of their colleges or universities and start a day job because they have to support their families after getting married and lose a chance to complete their education. Hence, one should complete their finishing school before they decide to get married.

Moreover, it is really essential that one should be financially stable and has a secure job before making a decision to get married because there are numerous responsibilities and duties that one has to take care of after getting married. Furthermore, an individual needs to earn well as marriage comes along with an increase in household expenditures. For example, when one starts a family, one needs to be economically stable in order to afford the new lifestyle full of changes.

To conclude, it is not a wise decision to get married before finishing school or having a stable source of income.

PTE-A Write Essay: Agree or Disagree/ Opinion

General Outline for Write Essay prompts

Some people think that placing advertisements in schools is a great resource for public schools that need additional funding, but others think it exploits children by treating them as a captive audience for corporate sponsors.

Choose which opinion you most agree with and discuss why you chose that position. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experience or observations.

Line 1: The topic here is advertising. Once you know the topic, you can clearly see that there are two sides to this prompt. The first that says, ‘advertising good’ and the second half that says ‘advertising bad’ – this is an easy way to understand your prompt–topic, good and bad points… these are usually advantage/disadvantage essay types.

  • Remember. One subject and a positive and negative statement comment about that subject usually always is an Advantage/ Disadvantage prompt.

Anyway, you must make an unbiased statement about advertising here. For example.

Line 1: Advertising seems to be inescapable these days; it can be found on my cellphone, television, and on most buildings .

  • Note: do not ‘purple’ the topic by modifying it with an adjective, like. ‘ Terrible advertising can be found everywhere these days’ – it must be an objective/neutral sentence about advertising.

Line 2: Should be written as a concession! What is a concession, you ask? A concession is a very old rhetorical form, which may extend back to Roman times where Cicero used it to argue with the senate. Simply put, it works like this. If I say something ‘nice’ about your point of view, you will more than likely listen to what I have to say. For our purposes on the PTE, we use a concessionary statement to show both sides of an argument just before your thesis statement. We do this because we have to ‘validate’ your thesis statement to ensure that you are not just making one up that is incorrect or misleading.

So, for the above prompt, a concession will look like this:

DC, IC–a dependent clause followed by an independent clause whereby the position you are not going to defend will be in the dependent clause, and the position you will support is in the independent clause .

Line 2: Although some schools use advertising to obtain extra funding, there are other schools that believe advertising takes advantage of children while they attend school .

Notice : The 1 st clause is an adverbial dependent clause that ‘concedes ground’; as we say. The 2 nd clause is an independent clause, the more important clause , which, in your conclusion, you will make a final comment about.

In the prompt above, a compound sentence joins two independent clauses with the coordinating conjunction ‘but’. The prompt tries to show that some people believe school ‘advertising is ok to get extra money’ whereas other people (mentioned after ‘but’) believe that advertising takes advantage of children (exploits)because children must go to school (captive audience) in most countries.

So, you are to realize that your 1 st paragraph will be about ‘advertising is ok’ while your second paragraph will be about the negative effects of advertising in school.

An alternate way to rewrite the prompt, to help you see what it is saying, is to write each half of the prompt in a passive voice. The trick here is to move the object of the independent clauses into the subject position and then rewrite those parts of the sentence to have the same approximate meaning of the original prompt.

The same prompt in the passive voice:

Line 2: Additional funding is gained by some public schools by way of advertising; however, business advertising is frowned upon by other public schools because they believe that it takes advantage of children just because they must go to school .

For an understanding of the passive voice try Anglo-Link passive voice on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxbQ2U3Uuv0&t=575s

Note: ‘business advertising’ is synonymous with ‘corporate sponsors’ and ‘however’, a conjunctive adverb replaces ‘but’ as their function is the same.

Line 3 is the most important part of the ‘Introduction’ because it states your thesis, or what you will discuss in your body paragraphs [and your opinion]. Always write it in this form as a Simple Sentence with a compound verb (2 verbs):

This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of advertising and explain why it should not be used in public schools.

The thesis (above) is written in the same form as this sentence: ‘He will eat pizza and drink cola.

Note: the simple future tense is used at the start of the essay–‘will discuss’ and ‘ will explain’, but it is bad form to repeat the auxiliary verb ‘will’ with the second verb (explain).

Important : following the verb ‘explain’ you create a noun clause that states your opinion. Do not give a reason just yet – just state in a clause: ‘ it (advertising) should not be used in public schools’.

In any event, the first three sentences for this prompt should read like this:

Line 1: Advertising seems to be everywhere these days; on my cellphone, television, and on most buildings.

Line 2: Although some schools use advertising to obtain extra funding, there are those that believe it takes advantage of children while they attend school .

Line 3: This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of advertising and explain why it should not be used in public schools.

From this point on, the essay should be easy because the topic sentences are, for all practical concerns, done for you – they are opposites in an Advantage/Disadvantage prompt!

For example:

Paragraph 2

Line 4: Topic sentence: There are several reasons why schools might want to use advertising to obtain extra money .

Line 5: Support: Both wealthy and poor schools do use advertising to generate money .

Line 6: Detail: For example, a school may be poor and need the funds to take their children on extracurricular trips away from town .

Line 7: Conclusion: In this way, schools can make use of this money derived from advertising to add variety to their student’s education.

Paragraph 3

Line 8: Topic sentence: However, there are several arguments about why schools might not want to use advertising to get extra funds .

Line 9: Support: It is popular among businesses to direct advertising promotions to children of all ages.

Line 10: Detail: For instance, McDonald’s often presents hamburger specials along with a toy to entice children to want their food .

Line 11: Conclusion: In this way, advertising can lead to problems of health or overspending for children .

The two-line conclusion in your essay should begin in the past tense. In the first line, you rewrite Line 3 (above) to the word just before ‘and’.

Line 12: In conclusion, this essay has argued the benefits and detriments of advertising in public schools.

The final line of your essay should restate your opinion (usually flip the subject and object from your opinion in Line 3) and add one final reason as to why advertising should not be used in schools. Use ‘because to introduce this final reason

Line 13: In my opinion, schools should not use advertising because safeguarding children should be more important than making money . (231 words)

Popular Essay Topics for PTE

Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

The PTE exam is divided into four modules: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In the first part of the exam, you will complete the speaking and writing modules together. While your writing score will be evaluated through your responses to other questions as well, there are just two writing tasks: Summarise Written Text and Write Essay.

The PTE essay writing task is designed to assess your understanding of grammatical structures, vocabulary, spelling, and, most importantly, written communication skills. As a result, it’s crucial that you familiarise yourself with this section and know what to expect before taking the exam. Keep reading to learn about the essay writing task, how to attempt it, and how to gain an impressive score in this category.

PTE Writing Task

You will be given a 2 or 3 line question prompt expressing an opinion or assertion for this task. The question prompt can be composed in a variety of styles.

Some questions will prompt you with a generalised statement and ask you to elaborate on a particular aspect or pick a side.

Example :  Some people think that teachers should be responsible for teaching students to judge what is right and wrong so that they can behave well. Others say that teachers should only teach students academic subjects. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Meanwhile, some prompts will ask you a direct question.

Example :  Do you think the place where a person grew up helps him/her in accomplishing goals in life? Do you agree or disagree?

Following the prompt, you will be instructed to write a 200-300 word essay in response to the question. An introduction section, two main paragraphs that advance an idea, and finally, a conclusion should constitute the elements of the essay in the given order.

You have only 20 minutes to prepare, write, and edit your essay. As a result, it is critical that you practise this task several times well before the exam. For example, you might be required to discuss issues or solutions or to argue against or for a point of view. Likewise, you may need to debate whether you concur or disagree with a given statement.

Types of essays in PTE Writing Task

There are 4 essential Essay types in the PTE:

  • Argument essay type: For this type of essay topic in the PTE, you are given two viable alternatives and are expected to choose and support one of them.
  • Discussion essay type: Applicants are expected to write about a specific aspect of an issue that is being explored in depth in this type of essay.
  • Problem-Solution essay type: candidates are given a problem and prompted to write about possible solutions to the problem.
  • Opinion essay type: Candidates must express their thoughts on a specific topic.

Common Topics for each essay Type

The most effective way to prepare is to become acquainted with the most common types of topics in the PTE Write Essay. PTE essay topics can roughly be categorized as follows:

  • law and policy
  • Environment

Now let us take a look at example topics for each from past question papers.

  • Do you think consumers should avoid over-packaged products or it is the responsibility of the producer to avoid extra packaging of products? Give your views or any relevant example with your own experience.
  • What is the best invention of the last 100 years, the computer, antibiotics, the airplane, and explain why?
  • Many people think regions affect successful people. What are your opinions about native regions and accomplished person influence on the regions they belong to?
  • In some countries around the world, voting is compulsory. Do you agree with the notion of compulsory voting?

Discussion:

  • Company Top level Authorities should or should not take employees’ suggestions or ideas to make any decisions
  • Large shopping malls are replacing small shops. What is your opinion about this? Discuss with appropriate examples.

Problem/Solution:

  • International travel and tourism make people prejudiced rather than broad-minded. What are its causes and what measures can be taken to solve this problem?
  • There are many different types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays? Please provide a solution.

This list is obviously not exhaustive, because there are several other unusual question topics.

How to Prepare?

It is critical to prepare for any essay type that you might have to write in the PTE. Your score is influenced by how you present your response. You are evaluated in PTE Write Essay by utilizing good word choice and organizing your answer effectively and correctly while presenting your thoughts. In other words, your aim is to show your ability to use appropriate word choices – a solid command of vocabulary and organize them appropriately to eliminate ambiguity.

A good essay requires a precise and logical structure, and the PTE essay is no exception. In fact, PTE encourages a methodical structural approach with a simple introduction, main body, and closing paragraph, all of which are intended to improve the effectiveness of the computerized marking system.

The key feature of a high-scoring essay is that paragraphs pursue a natural progression of development. This means that the pattern of your passages should quickly recognize strong correlations from the first para to the next and so on. You must avoid writing unrelated loose elements and keep your content coherent.

The subject of your essay is critical, and it is graded by analyzing whether all parts of the issue have been covered in the response and whether offered information, examples, and explanations adequately support the test taker’s point of view.

When it comes to the essay, free your mind. Allow ideas to flow and prepare for a good debate. Be creative as much as possible but only if your approach does not deviate from the topic! If you do not discuss the subject, you will receive a 0 on all attributes.

You will also be granted the following points, which are quite simple to gain:

  • 2 marks for no spelling mistakes
  • 2 marks for no noticeable grammatical errors
  • 2 marks for penning in between 200 and 300 words.

These should be simple marks that you should capitalise on.

To conclude, evaluate the prompt and plan what the question requires you to do. Determine the topic, key points to cover, and arguments to present. After that, you must make a decision regarding which side of the debate you will take. You can then sketch out a rough outline of the structure and content you want your essay to have. Finally, allow yourself a few moments to check for misspelled words, proper punctuation, and proper grammar.

Start practicing your PTE essay as much as possible prior to the test, and keep this advice handy to help you study – we’re confident you’ll do well!

How many types of essays are there in PTE?

agree or disagree essay pte

Broadly speaking, there are four types of essay topics in the PTE test. This post will discuss this matter with some examples for each topic.

1. Argument type

In this type of PTE essay topic, you are presented with two options and you are supposed to stick to one side and support it. For example;

Teenage offenders should be treated in the same way as adult criminals. Do you agree or disagree?

2. Discussion type (Advantage or disadvantage)

In this type of essay, PTE candidates are supposed to write about a particular part of a topic that the content writer highlights. The following is a good example.

In the future, it may be scientifically possible for people to live for 150 years. This could be good news for individuals but it may have negative consequences for our society. What are the benefits and risks of people living to 150?

3. Problem-solution type

As the name implies, PTE candidates are presented with a problem and they are supposed to write about possible solutions to it. Here is an example:

Some people say that the Internet is responsible for destroying social skills of teenagers and young adults. Why do you think the Internet is seen as dangerous in this way and what can we do to ensure that it does not harm the social development of teenagers and young people?

4. Opinion type

As it says on the tin, PTE candidates need to express their opinion on a particular topic. The following topics are real PTE essay topics:

Who do you think is the most influential person in the world? Support your choice with examples.

What do you think is the most important invention of the last century? Give reasons and examples where necessary.

IELTS Agree or Disagree Essay format: Works 100%. Guaranteed

In Writing Task 2 of IELTS , an agree or disagree essay is the most common type of essay. Essentially, a debatable opinion will be presented to you, and you have to propound a discourse either supporting or opposing it .

two girls showing agree or disagree hand gesture

There are multiple ways of going about with agree or disagree essay questions. You can agree with the statements whole-heartedly or totally disagree with the claims. Likewise, you may decide to agree or disagree to a certain degree. All this depends on your perspective as well as the arguments you can think of during the test.

Examples of IELTS Agree or Disagree essay questions

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend around 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Structure of IELTS Agree or Disagree Essay

Even though we can lean on one side of the argument partially or fully, I recommend to either completely agree or completely disagree with the opinion in agree or disagree essays in the IELTS test.

This is because regardless of what your personal beliefs are on the matter, scoring high in the IELTS Writing Test involves writing in a tightly-structured format with a clear position on the subject matter.

So, during the test, brainstorm for ideas regarding the topic, and choose to agree or disagree depending on how many arguments you can think of on either side. You need to write about two to four separate ideas in support of your position based on the following format:

If you have only two arguments, then develop them into two separate paragraphs with explanations and examples.

When you come up with three arguments, include two of them in one body paragraph and the other in the next.

Similarly, with four arguments, the two body paragraphs should consist of two ideas each.

You do not need more than four arguments for an agree or disagree essay in IELTS Writing Task 2. More is not always better. Too many ideas may make your essay disorganized and lacking focus.

Questions which ask “Do you think this is positive or negative?” can also be answered in the same format as the agree or disagree essay.

Introduction

As we have seen before, an Introduction paragraph in essays has three components.

  • Paraphrase the statements from the question
  • Pick a side: choose between agree or disagree
  • Mention your arguments

The above paragraph is a good Introduction for IELTS agree or disagree essay question. The first sentence paraphrases the statement given in the prompt. The second sentence asserts that the essay agrees with the opinion as well as provides an argument. The third sentence adds more ideas which will be developed in the body paragraphs.

black board with mathematical formula

Body paragraphs

The ideas mentioned in the Introduction paragraph of agree or disagree questions should be extended in the paragraphs that follow. For this, clarification, logical reasoning, and evidences are needed . In Writing Task 2 of IELTS, two body paragraphs work best for an agree or disagree essay.

Just like the Introduction paragraph, the body paragraph also has a three-part structure:

  • State your point
  • Explain what you mean by providing reasons
  • Give examples

people collecting garbage from a beach

Conclusion for Agree or Disagree essay

Like all other essay questions, the IELTS agree or disagree essay also ends with a Conclusion paragraph . It is here in this last paragraph that we summarize the points made in the body .

  • Reiterate your thesis

sir is there difference between – to what extend do you agree or disagree vs do you agree or disagree questions?

Gaurav Thapa

The two questions are identical. “To what extent” means you can partially or completely agree or disagree with the prompt. Even when the “to what extent” phrase is missing from the question, you can still partially or fully take a side to argue for in the essay.

For practical purposes, there is no difference.

Who Cares if Supreme Court Justices Get Along?

An illustration of six justices cavorting in black robes. One holds a gift basket with a banner reading, “All is well.”

By Linda Greenhouse

Ms. Greenhouse, the recipient of a 1998 Pulitzer Prize, reported on the Supreme Court for The Times from 1978 to 2008 and was a contributing Opinion writer from 2009 to 2021.

The Supreme Court is hurting.

I can say that with confidence — not based on any inside information but on the external evidence of how hard some of the justices are working to show that everyone on the court really does get along.

“When we disagree, our pens are sharp, but on a personal level, we never translate that into our relationship with one another,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor told an audience at the National Governors Association conference in February. “We don’t raise our voices, no matter how hot-button the case is,” Justice Amy Coney Barrett said at the civics forum at George Washington University in March.

The retired justice Stephen Breyer, on the talk circuit for his new book on constitutional interpretation, has been making the same point. In a guest essay in The Times this month, he observed that “justices who do not always agree on legal results nonetheless agree to go to hockey games or play golf together.” He added: “The members of the court can and do get along well personally. That matters.”

I’m reminded of the last time the court made a concerted effort to assure the public that all was well. It was during the weeks that followed the ruling that clinched the 2000 presidential election for George W. Bush. With the court in recess, justices who had voted on either side of that 5-to-4 decision, Bush v. Gore, scattered around the country and the world (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg went to Australia), taking the occasion of previously scheduled lectures to claim that the court was not in crisis.

Justice Ginsburg and Justice Antonin Scalia, bitterly opposed in that case and in a good many others, let it be known that they had kept up their tradition of New Year’s Eve dinner together with their spouses. “The justices are behaving almost like survivors of a natural disaster who need to talk about what happened in order to regain their footing and move on,” I wrote at the time.

Now, by contrast, there is no single issue, no giant iceberg that the court has struck, but rather separate disconcerting developments that have noticeably dented the court’s once secure public standing.

Was it the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision that erased the constitutional right to abortion and upended state politics in much of the country? The astonishing leak of a draft of the Dobbs decision, which Justice Clarence Thomas called “tremendously bad” and destabilizing for the court? The controversy over the court’s seeming inability to bind itself to a judicial ethics code? The abrupt emergence of a conservative supermajority flexing its muscles so forcefully that Justice Barrett, before reaching her first anniversary on the court, felt driven to declare publicly that “this court is not composed of a bunch of partisan hacks”?

It may be a bit of each of these or none of them, but the inventory itself suggests that what matters is what the court does or doesn’t do: that the legacy of the Roberts court will reside in the pages of United States Reports, the official compilation of Supreme Court decisions, and not in the justices’ datebooks. What counts is not how the justices treat one another but how they treat the claims of those who come before them.

I’m still shaking my head, for example, over a decision from several terms ago that stripped two laywomen, teachers in elementary parochial schools, of the protection of federal anti-discrimination laws because, the 7-to-2 majority held, they were effectively “ministers” who fell under a rule the court adopted eight years earlier called the ministerial exception to ordinary civil laws. The women had no substantial religious training. One did not have her contract renewed after she revealed that she needed time off for treatment of breast cancer. The Americans With Disabilities Act did her no good. By the time the court decided the case, she had died.

Few people remember that decision from only four years ago, Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru, which cast thousands of lay employees of religious organizations out from a federal safety net intended for all. I mention it only to underscore the ongoing need to watch what the court does, not how the justices feel.

The Supreme Court and other appellate courts are categorized in the judicial literature as collegial courts. “Collegial” in that usage is a term of art. It doesn’t mean that the judges necessarily get along. It means that these multimember courts act as collectives, when a majority coalesces. In a forthcoming memoir, “Vision,” Judge David Tatel, who recently retired from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, offers as good a definition of judicial collegiality as I have seen. “Judicial collegiality,” he writes, “has nothing to do with singing holiday songs, having lunch or attending basketball games together. It has everything to do with respecting each other, listening to each other and sometimes even changing our minds.”

Years ago, Mark Alan Stamaty used a “Washingtoon,” his cartoon that ran regularly in The Washington Post, to depict the Supreme Court justices walking in single file, each carrying a bundle. “The Supreme Court Goes to the Laundromat” was the title. I thought it was so funny that I kept it for years tacked to the New York Times cubicle in the Supreme Court pressroom. It portrayed, to be sure, a collegial Supreme Court.

But it was a cartoon.
