English Essay on “Pride Goes Before a Fall” English Essay-Paragraph-Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 CBSE Students and competitive Examination.
Pride Goes Before a Fall
Pride is born but of overconfidence. It is considered to be a sin. Pride often results in weakness. There are many things which create pride in marl. These are riches, status, power, recognition, ability, etc. The saying that pride goes before a fall is proved by many instances. Take, for example, the story of the hare and the tortoise. The hare was very confident of running fast and reaching the destination before time. He slept on the way and lost the race to the tortoise. It is seen that many students who scored high marks have become so over-confident of their achievements that they consider themselves as above average and neglect their studies. As result, they lose their high position. On the other hand, many weak students work very hard and, in the end, they surpass the brilliant students. The feeling of pride in achievement makes a person slack. It is the cause of laziness. A proud person is self-centered. He does not like to listen to other people’s advice. He thinks that he knows everything. One must learn from the examples that pride had resulted in the fall of many. One should be humble in life.

When I chose to select this essay prompt, many of my friends thought I was insane. All things considered, for what reason would I tell strangers, particularly college admission officials, that I had failed at something. Besides, how do we even characterize failure? Does it mean not measuring up to other's standards? Or does it merely just mean making an effort without accomplishing the ideal result? Either way, I have learned that failing is inevitable, and instead of fearing and resisting failure, we should embrace our flaws because they shape us into better versions of ourselves.

This was not apparent to me when I was younger. Typically, at a more premature age, individuals choose to believe that they are infallible, and this mindset is ironically what causes us to fail due to “pride before the fall”. Furthermore, during this period we become so self-obsessed that we don't even pay the slightest attention to the world or others around us, which is a fatal quality to have. I can vouch for this firsthand based on a traumatic experience I had with my sister.
My sister had struggled with depression her whole life and thankfully it had been dormant for the past couple of months, but as time passed she started to exhibit behaviors
suggesting its presence, but me being so consumed with my own self-interests I was completely ignorant of the signs of its return. I had recently obtained tickets to an Ed Sheeran concert, I was elated, and the one person I wanted to go with was my sister. As days passed by at a snail-like pace, the day of the concert had finally arrived, I was shaking with anticipation, but something was wrong, I had tried to contact my sister all day, but to no avail, she had not been responding. I was infuriated, how could she just not show up? How could she do this to me? That's the thing, I was so infatuated with my own dilemmas I didn't take the time to, nor did I care, to stop and ask why she wasn't responding. When she did finally respond she was filled with a lethal amount of remorse, apologizing profusely, and I told her to save her breath for she had let me down too many times and this was the last straw. To say that I was furious was an understatement, it was like I had gone into battle and my merciless words were my sword. I was in such a cloud of rage that I didn't even think as to how my hurtful words might have affected her.
I almost lost my sister that day. On the way back from the concert, my dad and I received the news that my sister had been admitted into the hospital for drinking a fatal amount of bleach. The car was silent. Rereading the messages that I had previously sent made me feel more guilty by the second. How could I have said those ruthless things? Was I the cause of this horrifying event? Out of the thousands of thoughts racing through my head one was extremely obtrusive - I had failed her. Not only did I let my emotions take control of me, but I failed to perceive the signs of her potent illness. Due to my selfishness, I almost lost one of the most treasured and salient people in my life. I did not take this lightly. Thankfully, they pumped her stomach and she recovered remarkably fast, but from that day on, I vowed to myself that I would never let anything like this happen again. I had led the majority of my life treading on toes, and not even caring to look back at the effects that my actions had. But not anymore.

As painful as it might be to accept when we have failed, it is crucial in the development of our being. My failure showed me that there was a problem in my actions, and that problem was me. If it wasn't for that traumatic experience I might’ve carried on being, for lack of better words, a narcissistic idiot. Since then, I have become more caring and attentive to the needs of others, which has not only helped me in my present life, but has also helped me develop into the type of person I want to be regarding my aspiration to be a teacher. In my opinion, teachers are the most selfless and attentive individuals on the planet. My whole life I have aspired to be one, and this specific failure, among a plethora of others, has molded me into the person I would be proud to call a teacher, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Pride goes before a fall., grammar index, popular pages.
Proverbs 16:18 Meaning of Pride Comes Before a Fall
Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Explanation and Commentary on Proverbs 16:18
This is one of the key principles that run throughout the arc of Scripture. Jesus himself taught the point often as he saw in his own day the religious pride of the Pharisees and Jewish elite (Lk 14:11). He pointed it out in his disciples every chance he got (Lk 9:46-48).
Paul chastised the Corinthians for taking pride in the people they were associated with, asking them, “What do you have that you did not receive. And if you received it, why do you boast as though you did not” (1 Cor 4:7)? Jesus told his followers and all who would listen that they should always take the lowest place. It is better to be asked to move up toward the head of the table than to be told to move down because someone more important had arrived (Lk 14:10).
The only remedy for pride is humility, which is impossible to attain by focusing on it. Instead, fix your eyes on God, who is truly marvelous, and you will see yourself rightly. Leave thinking about yourself to others and to God.
Breaking Down the Key Parts of Proverbs 16:18
#1 “Pride…” It is hard to calculate all the evil that has been caused by the destructive tendency that humans have toward pridefulness. Even in the heavenly realms, it was pride that caused Satan, once the most beautiful and exalted angel of light, to covet the greatness of God and the worship he received. Satan rebelled because of his pride. Pride is the main reason why people do not believe in and worship God. The temptation to be one’s own God and worship one’s self as an idol is very great to the fallen human race.
#2 “…goes before destruction,”
Matthew 23:12 “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
This warning could not be any clearer. A sure path to destruction is exalting oneself in pride. Countless stories are told today about men and women who thought too highly of themselves and began to consider themselves above laws and norms until everything finally came crashing down around them. Pride is so deceptive because it promises the world, but does not deliver.
#3 “a haughty spirit before a fall.” A haughty spirit can be seen in the rich and powerful, but it can also appear in the poor and lowly. This can sometimes go unrecognized because of the low status, but it will be seen in the bitter resentment as the person of low station will seethe at the misfortune and injustice that has led him or her to this low position. It is the certainty that they should be elevated that comes from pride.

The Sun and The Wind
Once the sun and the wind had a dispute. The wind claimed to be stronger than the sun, but the sun refused to accept the wind’s superiority. The wind was very proud. But the sun was not boastful at all.
In the meantime, a traveler, wearing a coat, happened to pass by them. Both claimed that they would make the traveler take off his coat. First, the wind blew out as fast as it could. The traveler began to shiver with cold. He buttoned up his coat and held it tightly to his body. Thus the wind was defeated.
Now came the turn of the sun. He shone very brightly. The traveler started sweating all over. As it was getting hotter, he took off his coat. Thus it was proved that the sun was stronger than the wind and won the bet.

Story time: pride goes before a fall.
Marium seemed to have everything. She was very beautiful, wealthy and intelligent as well. She wore beautiful branded clothes, and had expensive stationary items and school bag. She always answered the questions before anyone else in the class and always came first in all the examinations.
However, there was one problem, Marium was very proud. She had no one to talk to her, not a single close friend. And so, with all her riches and brains, she remained a lonely girl; yet she did not care because she was always the best in everything.
In the same class was a boy named Ahmed, who came from a humble background and a family that struggled to make ends meet. However, he was determined to overcome the financial challenges. So he worked tirelessly, studied day and night, proving an unparalleled commitment to his education. His perseverance and dedication were fuelled by a strong desire to break free from the constraints of poverty. And there always seemed to be a tough competition between Ahmed and Marium.
As the end of term drew near, the students, including Marium, began to think about the most important prize of the year offered to the winner of the essay competition by the principal.
“I needn’t worry about that. I shall easily win; after all, my compositions are always better than the rest,” thought Marium, as the others began to prepare for the essay.
As it is rightly said, ‘Pride goes before a fall,’ and it certainly did in the case of poor Marium. The topic given for the essay competition was ‘Happiness and friendship,’ of which Marium knew nothing. But she wrote whatever came to her mind. She didn’t even have a single idea of how it feels like to have friendship and true happiness in one’s life.
Ahmed was popular and had many good friends, so his essay reflected his diligence, but also touched the hearts of his peers, teachers and, of course, the principal. The contrast between Marium’s privileged life and Ahmed’s hard-earned success served as a powerful reminder of the true values that lead to fulfilment and genuine accomplishments.
Ahmed had no money, nor a privileged life, so success for him was a milestone; and for Marium, it was just another feather in her cap, but this time, the feather was stolen from her, she realised that all her money and her cleverness couldn’t win her the prize.
The competition suddenly opened her eyes, and she became a much more pleasant person after that, and her fellow pupils became her friends soon. She still won many prizes, but she never forgot the valuable lesson that the one prize she lost had taught her.

Pride Goes Before A Fall
Filed Under: Essays Tagged With: Literature
In a bid to exemplify the notion’s statement, “pride goes before a fall,” Alice Walker, Joyce Carol Oates and John Updike draw on their main characters Dee, Connie, and Sammy in their stories “Every day Use,” “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? ” and “A&P” respectively. Dee, Connie and Sammy are an example of how the notion of pride is shown in various ways and how as their pride reaches its peak, they fall. Dee shows her pride in her self centered personality that causes her to lose her appreciation for her mother and her sister Maggie, and causes her to abandon her heritage and become distant.
Connie, in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? ” shows pride in her overconfidence that leads her to act impetuously causing her to lose her personal safety. Sammy, in “A&P” shows pride by simply quitting his job in response to what he views to be an unacceptable behavior by his boss, and wishes to grab the attention of girls that merely recognize him. The Preoccupation with pride that these characters have causes them to eventually fall. Dee’s egocentrism leads her to become unappreciative to both her family and her heritage.
Dee reveals her true personality when she responds to her mother for the reason she wants to take the quilts instead of her sister in the quotation, “Hang them, she said. As if that was the only thing you could do with quilts”(Walker 375).
This quotation shows moment when Mama’s attitude changes in the story. Before it, she was submissive to Dee and had much respect for her. After, she realizes that Dee will never be grateful to her or even able to understand that there are other people in this world besides herself.

Although in her age, women are regarded as emotional, weak, nurturing, and submissive, Austen depicts her heroine, Elizabeth as a woman who has her own perspectives, feelings, and opinions. This paper analyses feminism in Pride and Prejudice from its progressive and conservative aspects. The former is reflected from the perspective ...
Dee’s pride is shown in her eagerness to take the quilts that are originally for Maggie; She ignores her sister’s feelings and her mother’s will. She fakes love for her mother’s old things because they are expensive, not because she enjoys the history and is proud of her heritage. The pride causes Dee to lose her appreciation for her mother, sister, and heritage and at the same time she loses her mother appreciation for her. Maybe if she did not respond to her mother’s question by simply hanging the quilts, her mother would have given them to her.
However, her selfish desires of getting whatever she wants leads her to loose her mother’s respect. Connie’s self assertiveness ended by her loosing her safety. Connie shows her pride in her personal thought as the narrative states, “ actually Connie thought that her mother preferred her to June because she was prettier”(Oates 53).
Connie’s overconfidence of her self comes from her beauty. She finds her self to be a beautiful young girl who is a point of interest among the boys.
As a result of herself, she builds up her personality with that overconfidence, while at the same time building her pride up. As soon as her pride is at its maximum level, she acts in an impetuous way ignoring the outcomes of her actions, this can be seen through the quotation, “It was a car she didn’t know… she whispered “Christ, Christ,” wondering how bad she looked… she went into the kitchen and approached the door slowly, then hung out the screen door, her bare toes curling down off the step”(Oates 54).
This quotation shows Connie’s pride and how her pride causes her to fall.
Connie’s reaction when she finds a stranger in her driveway by wondering how she looks reveals that her pride takes value over her safety, while the normal thoughts that any body can think about when he finds a stranger entering his driveway is thinking about his safety, Connie is only concerned with her beauty. Connie’s overconfidence pushes her to approach the door which is the beginning of her fall. Connie lives in her small safe life of teenagers, not taking into consideration the outside wild life that she approaches blindly.
The Essay on Young Girl Mother Girls Story
Within every story or poem, there is always an interpretation made by the reader whether right or wrong. In doing so, one must thoughtfully analyze all aspects of the story in order to make the most accurate assessment based on the literary elements the author has used. Compared and contrasted within the two short stories, "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, and John Updike's "A&P," the literary ...
At the time she decided to open the door, Connie the teenager and the young adult is blended together. Connie is in a stage of maturation— She decides to approach the door for the stranger which is the teenager side of her mind and at the same time she approaches it slowly which is the young adult side of her character. Her action to hang out the screen door is the time when Connie is completely mature and considered a young adult. At this moment, Connie cannot go back to the level of maturity she had when she was a teenager. Connie starts the fall.
Connie’s overconfidence causes her to portray an imaginary photo of how the world is and she acts from this perspective which ultimately ends her losing her self security. Sammy resigning his job shows pride, but renders him inferior in society. Sammy shows pride in the way he reacts to his boss, Mr. Lengel. The way he treats the girls is shown in the quotation, “The girls who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say “I quit” to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero”(Updike 87).
The quotation shows the girl’s reaction to Mr. Lengel’s words. They want to go out of the store as quick as they can. It also shows Sammy’s rashness in thoughts and making decisions by stating that he quits in a quick manner. Quitting to Sammy is a way that he shows pride and is a way to grab the girls attention. He is showing that he supports them, and he thinks that they will consider him their hero. Sammy also shows hesitation that his action may attract the girls attention. He hopes that by quitting, his proud actions will grab their attention.
However, he comes out of the store and he does not find any body waiting for him. As the narrator states, “I look around for the girls, but they’re gone… I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”(Updike 88).
At this moment, Sammy realizes his fall. This fall can be viewed in two perspectives. The first perspective is a superficial one because he thought that the girls would be impressed and would be waiting for him which they didn’t. The second is when he realized that he quit his only job and that world will be hard to him, which is something that is hard to handle.
The Essay on Why Does Sammy Quit His Job?
In the short story “A&P”, the character Sammy quits his job for a few different reasons. In the podcast professor Higgins suggest that she quits for two different reasons. Sammy wants to impress the girls. The other reason was because; Sammy mentions that once you make a decision it is fatal not to go back on it. I agree with both reasoning’s. 390 Words Essay on Pride goes before a fall
This proverb is coined from the well known story entitled, “The Hare and die Tortoise,” from Aesop’s fables. We all remember having read it during our kindergarten days.
The hare always quick on his feet challenged a tortoise to a running race! The tortoise who knew that, being a slow animal he was no match for the hare. Yet he accepted the challenge. On the day of the race all the animals assembled at one place and die race commenced. Alas! Like a lightning the hare sprinted across and disappeared from sight. But poor tortoise walked slowly, as usual.
The haughty hare, which had gone too far away, paused under a tree. He knew that it would take a long time for the tortoise to reach him. So he stretched and slept. How long he slept, he never knew. Meanwhile, the tortoise came there, saw the hare sleeping and went ahead quietly and reached die winning post, giving a crushing defeat to the hare!

This was a lesson not only to die hare, but to everyone who feels too proud and underestimates the others. No matter whatever one’s capacity is, one should not feel proud of it.
To cite another example, we have all seen the English movie, ‘Titanic.’ One of the main reasons that the ship sank was the overconfidence of the captain and the ship’s crew. They underestimated what harm an iceberg could do to such a mighty ship of theirs. Hence, the overconfidence broke the ship and sank it, drowning many hundreds of passengers.
People say that even a watch that stopped working, shows correct time twice a day! Some people have the habit of speaking so high of themselves. This is a bad practice. No one wishes to hear a man blow his own trumpet.
Variant of this proverb is, “Scorn the proud man that is ashamed to weep!” by Edward Young; “Pride is not more sinful, than it is dangerous!” by Steele and “He who considers himself too much will perform a little!” by Schiller. No one speaks well of a proud person.
When a man becomes proud, his mind absentmindedly shuts the door of respect to others. At die same time, some people are differently proud. They appear to be too humble. Hence, this great saying also says that, “Too humble is half proud.

However, after returning from the half-term vacations, she became chesty and vain, only speaking to the smartest students in the class and becoming impatient with slower students.
