Writing a second grade essay

In elementary school, children need to compose four kinds of passages:

  • Short responses to questions (one or two sentences),
  • Long responses to questions (about five sentences or one paragraph),
  • Narratives (stories of varying lengths), and
  • Essays (single paragraphs to five paragraphs).

The other night I received a call from a father whose second-grade son needed to write an essay on his favorite animal.  The child didn’t know what to do.  I asked the boy on the phone what his favorite animal is.  “Dogs,” he said, not a surprising answer since the boy has grown up with pet dogs.  I asked him why, and he identified several reasons.  I told him he needed to explain his reasons.  He told me that without problem.

I told him that to write the essay he needed to

  • First, write a sentence saying that dogs are his favorite animal.
  • Second, tell why dogs are his favorite animal, one sentence for each reason. Then he needed to add other sentences explaining why.  The best detail is one that begins with “for example,” I told him.
  • Last, end the essay by repeating that dogs are his favorite animal and name the reasons without the details.

Do you understand? I asked.  The boy grumbled in the background, but his father told me that he understood.  We ended the phone conversation.

The next morning, the father texted me the essay below.

second grader essays

I don’t know how much direction the classroom teacher gave this boy.  It seemed like this was one of the first times the student was required to write an essay.  Did the teacher take the students through the organizational process?  Did she show organizational boxes for the student to fill in?  Did she model writing an essay or two or three in class?  Did she explain what information belonged in the first sentence or in the middle sentences or in the conclusion?  I suspect she didn’t since the boy—an A+ student—had no idea when I talked to him.  Yet after a five-minute phone call, he wrote a classic essay (for a second grader).

To be fair, I don’t know the circumstances surrounding this assignment.  Was the teacher a substitute?  Was there a fire drill taking up the time that the teacher wanted to use to preview this assignment?  Was the boy pulled out of class when the teacher  explained the assignment to the class?

I am left to wonder what training this boy’s teacher received to teach writing.  Perhaps, like all too many teachers, not enough.

How-To Writing for 2nd Graders

April 29, 2015

If your second grade students are working on how-to writing or procedural writing, you may be looking for a few tools to get started. Here are some resources to help.

It’s Wednesday, so I’m back with another writing post. Today’s focus is on How-To Writing (some of you might call it Procedural Writing). Because each class of students is different, the length of time I spend on this writing unit varies greatly from year to year. About two years ago, I was able to spend 8 weeks on this unit.  Last year, we only spent 3 weeks on it.

Ready to try how-to writing with your second graders, but not sure where to start? I'm sharing my favorite books, anchor charts, and tips for getting started with how-to writing.

How-To Writing Mentor Texts

For this unit, I start by reading aloud books that model different characteristics of how-to writing.  I do not read every single book below, but these are all great choices:

  • How To Feed Your Parents
  • How to Read to a Grandma and Grandpa
  • How I Trained My Dog in 10 Days
  • If Your Monster Won’t Go to Bed
  • How to Code a Sandcastle
  • How to Catch a Monster
  • Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bicycle
  • How to Read a Story
  • How to Draw 101 Animals
  • Caring for Your Lion
  • How to Build a Fizzy Rocket
  • How to Apologize

Click on the picture below to find even more how-to or procedural writing books on Amazon .

Books are a great tool to help teach writing. Here are some of my favorite mentor texts for how-to writing and procedural writing.

we are a participant in the amazon services llc associates program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to amazon.com and affiliated sites.

If you don’t have any money left in your teaching budget, look into what is already included in your curriculum. Our school is fortunate to have a Reading A-Z subscription and there are several choices at different levels. Our curriculum also has a few choices that aren’t my favorites, but they will do in a pinch (or to leave for a guest teacher).  In either case, the following titles are leveled texts available to me which makes them ideal for small groups:

Getting Started with How-To Writing

As I’m reading, I start pointing out and introducing the different text featuresI want my students to use in their own writing. We begin to create an anchor chart as a class. This turns into a writing checklist of things I want my students to include in their writing. Here’s one that we developed two years ago (that I have since cleaned up just for you). My students put these in their writing folders:

Now that we have all of the pieces, we’re ready to jump in and begin writing. When we started it was winter, so I picked a high interest topic for modeling purposes (How to Build a Snowman). There are so many options for prewrites.  For this prompt I created a bubble map for the materials we would need. Then I made a 4-box plan with the most basic transition words. I drew pictures and added key words and details to write about later.

second grader essays

We always use a bubble map for the materials or ingredients we need.  Then when it’s time to do a prewrite, they often choose one of the following to draw and write out the steps:

One of my favorite resources for How-To is made by the talented Tangled Up in Teaching .  It is filled with graphic organizers, writing papers, and THE BEST craftivities.  Obviously we don’t use every single one.  In fact, we only use a few and only at the beginning when we are doing shared how-to writing.  However, it remains one of my favorite TpT purchases of all time!

second grader essays

Seriously, you cannot even begin to imagine how excited students get when they have a fun project at the end.  Here are two of the craftivities we have used in the past:

second grader essays

Since I do a lot of modeling during writing instruction, students can easily fall into patterns and more formulaic writing.  I use writing minilessons along the way to help them improve their word choice. Two places to do this are with transitions and action words. These become anchor charts on the walls and then I make printable resources for their writing folders. This is what we came up with last year:

second grader essays

In order to increase their independence, we brainstorm a list of topics that my students are “experts” in. I use the term “experts” very loosely! After all, these kiddos are second graders, but the word “expert” empowers them! Here is a list of topics my class came up with a few years ago (typed up just for you):

second grader essays

I hope you were able to gather some new ideas to jump into how-to writing. Are you ready for some freebies?

second grader essays

I hope this has given you a new idea or two for how-to writing! You might also enjoy:

The Guide to 2nd Grade: Reading and Writing

Review reading and writing curricula for second grade, learn what to expect, and discover the books and activities you can use to support learning..

Once students reach 2nd grade, they’re often ready to accelerate their learning. That’s because at this point, they've adjusted to the more rigorous learning environment initially encountered in 1st grade , and are able to further expand their skills and knowledge in every subject area.

In 2nd grade, your child becomes a more experienced writer and reader by practicing their skills in more complex and comprehensive ways. Students read bigger and more complicated books, and write longer and more in-depth pieces. What’s more, second graders pursue projects that involve research and critical thinking.

Read on for what to expect this year, and shop all books and resources at The Scholastic Store ! For more book and reading ideas,  sign up  for our Scholastic Parents newsletter.

Reading in Second Grade

Second graders continue to develop their literacy skills as they learn more complex words and absorb longer, more rigorous texts in a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Students also expand their reading comprehension skills as they talk about what they read, and develop more advanced ideas around those topics. Just like in previous years, second graders also continuously practice reading as they use texts for other subjects throughout the day.

To build reading skills, your second grader :

  • Reads more complex words, such as two-syllable words.
  • Reads words with common prefixes and suffixes, for example:  pre- ,  re- ,  un-,  - able , - ad , and - er.
  • Reads grade-appropriate, irregularly spelled words (consult your child’s teacher for a specific list of these words).
  • Reads a variety of texts including fiction , nonfiction , fables, and poetry.
  • Understands the structure of a story, specifically the purpose of beginnings (introducing the text) and endings (concluding the text).
  • Understands the most important details of a text—its main purpose and the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.”
  • Talks about characters’ responses, main events, lessons learned, and important ideas or concepts.
  • Begins to make connections within and between texts.
  • Compares at least two different versions of the same story, such as two versions of a classic fairy tale.
  • Reads at grade level with correct accuracy, pace, expression, and comprehension.
  • Self-corrects mistakes and re-reads when necessary.

Second Grade Reading Activities

Make a “W” Chart : While you and your child read books together, make a “W” chart. Fill out the "who," "what," "when," "where," "why," and "how" of the book as your child discovers them.

Pay Attention to Prefixes and Suffixes : When your child uses a word with a prefix or suffix, occasionally stop to talk about it. Break down the word and say what the prefix or suffix and root word mean when they’re put together, and brainstorm other words that have the same suffix or prefix.

Make Up Your Own Version of a Story : After your child reads a story, work together to create your own versions, changing details such as setting, time, or even the ending. You can even tweak the story so it occurs in places or with characters you know. This helps them understand story structure and make comparisons.

Writing in 2nd Grade

Second graders write texts that are more detailed, lengthy, and varied, all of which refines their writing skills. They also use technology to publish their writing (you can help prepare them for this by going online at home together).

Similar to reading, writing occurs throughout the day as students use it for a variety of subjects.

To build writing skills, your second grader :

  • Opinion Pieces: Students state their opinions and provide reasons to support them, closing with a conclusion.
  • Narrative Pieces: Students write about an event, describing actions, thoughts, and feelings, and provide a conclusion.
  • Informative/Explanatory Pieces: Students introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a conclusion.
  • Revises and edits writing to improve it.
  • Uses digital tools with the aid of the teacher to publish writing.
  • Researches topics for shared, group, or class-wide research and writing projects.

Second Grade Writing Activities

Start a Journal : Use it to remember the trips, weekends, and special times your family has spent together. Your child can both write and illustrate the journal — in fact, you can pick a favorite entry from the journal and work with your child to write a longer piece or story about that event, illustrating it with photographs or drawings.

Write What You Think : Kids often have very strong opinions! Ask your child to express their opinion about something through writing and to explain the reasoning behind her thoughts. Your child can then read the piece out loud to family members and take questions from the “audience.”

Read Other People’s Writing : Second grade is a great time for your child to start reading magazines created specifically for kids. These often have many types of texts, including narratives, fiction, non-fiction, and opinion pieces for your child to absorb and learn from. Read the magazines together and talk about the articles — doing so will help fortify their own writing skills.

Steelers NFL Draft grades 2024: Full list of Pittsburgh's draft picks, plus analysis for every selection

All the steelers picks and draft news in one place.

usatsi-22014010-1.jpg

You've made it, Steelers fans. After months of speculation, reports and mock drafts, Pittsburgh's fanbase is finally getting to see who its team is adding in the 2024 NFL Draft . This is a huge draft for the Steelers, who are hoping to make a deep playoff run in 2024.

For a second straight year, Pittsburgh selected an offensive lineman with its first-round pick. This year, the Steelers took Washington offensive lineman Troy Fautanu , who made starts at both tackle and at guard during his time with the Huskies. Fautanu's versatility was surely one of the reasons why the Steelers selected him.

The Steelers' patience was rewarded in the second round, as they stayed put and selected former West Virginia center Zach Frazier with the 41st pick. Frazier -- a two-time All-American and three-time team captain at West Virginia -- is now part of a rebuilt offensive line in Pittsburgh that also includes Fautanu and 2023 first-round pick Broderick Jones .

With the 84th pick, the Steelers selected wideout Roman Wilson , who caught a dozen touchdown passes last season for the national champions. He caught big touchdowns last year in Michigan's wins over Ohio State and Alabama. A willing blocker, Wilson is most effective when playing in the slot.

Pittsburgh took former North Carolina State linebacker Payton Wilson with its third and final pick on Day 3. Wilson had a whopping 138 tackles (18.5 tackles for loss), 6 sacks, 3 picks, 2 fumble recoveries an a forced fumble last season.

On Day 3, the Steelers continued to add to the offensive line with the selection of guard Mason McCormick, who made a school record 57 consecutive starts at South Dakota State. Pittsburgh capped off its draft by selecting two defensive players: Iowa's Logan Lee and Texas cornerback Ryan Watts . Lee made 40 starts at defensive tackle at Iowa, but is projected to line up at defensive end in Pittsburgh. Watts, a big defensive back at 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, was a dependable tackler and pass defender for the Longhorns.

Here is every single selection the Steelers made in this year's draft.

Grade the Trade: Chiefs Trade Up 1 Spot in Round 2 With 49ers

The Kansas City Chiefs trade up one spot with t he San Francisco 49ers. Was it worth the move?

  • Author: Tyler Forness

The Kansas City Chiefs have been wheeling and dealing in the 2024 NFL Draft. They didn't mess around to get their offensive tackle in BYU's Kingsley Suamataia at 63rd overall.

Now, this was a very interesting trade for the Chiefs. They only moved up one spot from 64th overall to go and get Suamaiaia but they paid a relatively heavy price. To move up one spot, the Chiefs swapped 173rd overall for 211th overall. That is a significant amout of capital to move just one spot.

Now, the other side of the argument is that the Chiefs were likely worried that the San Francisco 49ers were going to take Suamataia because the developmental tackles ended up going early on day two and the run was ending.

That process of targeting your guy is objectively fine, especially since the Chiefs needed a developmental tackle.

Second drone in as many days shot down near Moscow as Russia and Ukraine exchange attacks on capitals

Russia and Ukraine sent drones targeting each other’s capital cities over the weekend in signs of renewed intensity for their aerial warfare .

Drones were shot down on both Saturday and Sunday in areas around Kyiv and Moscow . Air defence systems for both sides intercepted attacks and no casualties were reported.

Multiple drones that were heading for Moscow and Russia’s border areas on Sunday were downed by Russian air defence systems over the weekend, officials said.

Kyiv has promised to wage a major drone campaign against Russia this winter , as bad weather conditions make it difficult to conduct operations on the ground.

Russian air defence units in Moscow intercepted a drone targeting the Russian capital, mayor Sergei Sobhyanin said on Telegram.

He said defence units in the Elektrostal district in the capital’s east intercepted the drone. Falling debris resulting from the operation had caused no damage or casualties, the mayor said, citing preliminary information.

Russia’s defence ministry confirmed the drone strike on Sunday night, as is typical describing the Ukrainian military operation as a “terrorist attack”.

“On 19 November at 23.20 Moscow time, an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using an aircraft-type UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] on targets in Moscow and the Moscow region was stopped,” it said on its official Telegram channel.

“Duty air defence systems intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle over the territory of the Moscow region.”

A second drone targeting Moscow was also intercepted by Russia’s air defence systems at around 1am.

The UAV was destroyed over the territory of the Bogorodsky district in Moscow, it said.

This comes after Russian authorities on Saturday said they shot down a Ukrainian drone heading for the border region of Bryansk.

The defence ministry said on-duty air defence systems destroyed the drone over Bryansk. It did not mention any casualties or damage from the attack.

Russia has also begun targeting Kyiv again after a 52-day break in air raid sirens for the Ukrainian capital.

On Saturday, Ukrainian officials said all drones heading towards Kyiv were destroyed but some hit infrastructure facilities elsewhere in Ukraine.

A day later, a wave of Iranian-made Shahed drones from Russia targeted Kyiv overnight.

The drones targeted the Ukrainian capital and the Cherkasy and Poltava regions, according to a military statement. Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems shot down 15 of 20 drones targeting the areas.

Serhii Popko, the city’s military administration spokesperson, said the drones attacked Kyiv from different directions in waves that were “constantly changing vectors”.

Ukrainian officials had warned Russia would step up aerial assaults during the winter months.

Meanwhile, the British defence ministry said there were “few immediate prospects” for major change along the Ukrainian frontline as the war enters its second winter.

In a statement, it said intense fighting was concentrated near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, Avdiivka in Dontesk and on the left bank of the Dnipro river, where Ukrainian forces have established a bridgehead.

It took longer than expected but the Buffalo Bills finally got their wide receiver.

The 2024 NFL Draft tied a record with seven wide receivers selected in the first round. The Bills kept the party going to start the second round at No. 33 overall.

Buffalo will hope Florida State's Keon Coleman , the No. 8 wideout taken, is their No. 1 wide receiver of the future.

The Bills traded down from No. 28 with the Kansas City Chiefs, who took Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, and then traded out of the first round with the Carolina Panthers, who picked South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette.

Coleman, who is 20 years old, had 50 receptions for 658 yards and led the ACC with 11 touchdown catches in 2023. He led Michigan State with 58 catches, 798 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2022.

NFL DRAFT HUB: Latest NFL Draft mock drafts, news, live picks, grades and analysis.

"He's an above-rim specialist," NFL Network analyst Chase Daniel said. "He's an absolute monster at Mossing people. Probably the best ball skills in this entire draft."

Buffalo Bills draft picks 2024:   Round-by-round selections and analysis

Daniel added Coleman likely would've been a first-round pick had he not ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

Here is how draft experts graded the pick:

"X" receiver for WR-needy team. Plays faster than his combine speed but doesn't separate consistently and isn't as good of a contested-catch wideout as his size and highlight-reel would indicate. Young though.

The Bills were able to trade back and still land a receiver. Sounds good to everyone, right? Coleman is a strong, sure-handed receiver whose game speed is much, much faster than his 40 time and wins downfield on contested catches and after the catch. Buffalo’s offense is undergoing a bit of a schematic shift, going for more YAC and winning in the short to intermediate areas than the downfield offense we know them for, and Coleman fits them like a glove.

Sporting News

Coleman is a big, strong and physical receiver with sound technique still developing his field-stretching and big-play ability. He fits the Bills as an outside No. 1 for Josh Allen after the team traded Stefon Diggs.

Sports Illustrated

Coleman spent two years at Michigan State before transferring to Florida State. With the Seminoles in 2023, the 6'3", 213-pounder caught 50 passes for 658 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo gets its receiver, though perhaps not the one many expected. Coleman is adept at winning jump balls but sparked some concern about his ability to create separation. The Bills lack a true go-to target in the post-Stefon Diggs landscape, but Coleman can allow Josh Allen to keep attacking downfield and still take on a sizable role as a rookie.

Bleacher Report

Keon Coleman initially looked like a future top-10 pick after he transferred to Florida State. But things went off the rails, particularly in the second half of the season.

Coleman originally played at Michigan State, where he led the Spartans in receiving during the 2022 campaign (over Jayden Reed, who became a second-round pick and standout NFL rookie). During his first six games with the Seminoles this past season, he caught 29 passes for 418 yards and seven touchdowns, with multiple highlightworthy grabs. Over the final six contests, he had only 21 receptions for 240 yards and four touchdowns.

Granted, quarterback Jordan Travis' season-ending injury late in the year didn't help. Coleman and the Seminoles never got an opportunity to show what they could do on the biggest stage since Travis' injury robbed them of an appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Things didn't exactly get better when the 6'3", 213-pound target ran an official 4.61- second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Conversely, he reached the fastest peak speed of any receiver during the combine's gauntlet drill, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Coleman's size, play speed and ability to make spectacular catches keep him among the class' most intriguing wide receiver prospects.

The Buffalo Bills chose not to trade down a third time. Instead, they selected Colemanat No. 33 overall.

For most of the predraft process, Coleman carried a high first-round grade. The aforementioned poor 40 time knocked him down a bit. But his size, verticality and special teams contributions make this an excellent value for a Bills team that had a major need at wide receiver after trading Stefon Diggs and losing Gabe Davis in free agency.

The soon-to-be 21-year-old prospect is the perfect target for Josh Allen's big arm.
