प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण हमारे पर्यावरण को काफी तेजी से नुकसान पहुंचा रहा है। प्लास्टिक पदार्थो से उत्पन्न कचरे का निस्तारण काफी कठिन होता है और पृथ्वी पर प्रदूषण में भी इसका काफी अहम योगदान है, जिससे यह एक वैश्विक चिंता का विषय बन गया है। प्लास्टिक बैगों, बर्तनो और फर्नीचर के बढ़ते इस्तेमाल के वजह से प्लास्टिक के कचरे में काफी वृद्धि हुई है, जिससे प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण जैसी भीषण समस्या उत्पन्न हो गयी है। यह वह समय है जब हमे इस समस्या पर गंभीरतापूर्वक विचार करते हुए, इसके समाधान के लिये प्रयास शुरु करने होंगे।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण प्लास्टिक के कचरे से उत्पन्न होता है, आज के समय में यह विकराल रुप धारण कर चुका है और दिन-प्रतिदिन यह बढ़ता ही जा रहा है। यह हमारे इस खुबसूरत ग्रह पे भी कई प्रकार के नकारात्मक प्रभाव डालता है, जिससे यह जनजीवन के लिये एक गंभीर संकट बन गया है, यही कारण है कि आज प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण एक वैश्विक चिंता का विषय बना हुआ है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को कैसे रोके

इन दो उपायो का अपने दैनिक जीवन में अपनाकर हम प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को कम करने में महात्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा सकते है।

• उपयोग ना करके/ अन्य विकल्पो को अपनाकर

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को रोकने के लिये सबसे महात्वपूर्ण कदम यह है कि हमें प्लास्टिक के उपयोग से बचना चाहिये।

क्योंकि अब हम इनके उपयोग के आदि हो चुके है तथा यह काफी सस्ते भी है, इसलिये हम इनके उपयोग को पूरी तरह से बंद नही कर सकते है। हालांकि हम उन प्लास्टिक उत्पादो के उपयोग को आसानी से बंद कर सकते है, जिनके इको-फ्रैंडली विकल्प उपलब्ध है। जैसे कि उदहारण के लिये , बाजार से सामान खरीदते समय हम प्लास्टिक बैग के जगह हम जूट, कपड़े या पेपर से बने बैगों का इस्तेमाल कर सकते है। ठीक इसी तरह पार्टियो और उत्सवो के दौरान हम प्लास्टिक के बर्तन और अन्य सामानो का उपयोग के जगह हम स्टील, कागज, थर्माकोल या अन्य उत्पादो से वस्तुओ का उपयोग कर सकते है, जिनका आसानी से पुनरुपयोग और निस्तारण किया जा सके।

यदि आप प्लास्टिक बैगों और प्लास्टिक से बने अन्य वस्तुओ का उपयोग नही बंद कर सकते तो कम से कम उन्हे फेंकने से पहले जितनी बार भी हो सके उनका पुनरुपयोग करे। प्लास्टिक बैगों और सामानो का उपयोग करके उन्हे फेंक देना लगभग हमारी आदत सा बन चुका है, जबकि यदि हम चाहे तो फेंकने से पहले हम इनका पुनरुपयोग कर सकते है, इस लिये यह काफी आवश्यक है कि हम फेंकने से पहले इनका पुनरुपयोग करे। इस प्रकार से हम प्लास्टिक कचरे को कम करने में और प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के रोकथाम में अपनी महात्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा सकते है।

आज के समय में प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण पर्यावरण के लिये एक गंभीर संकट बन गया है और आने वाले समय में यह और भी ज्यादे भयावह होने वाला है। इस प्रदूषण के कई कारण है तथा इसके नकरात्मक प्रभावो की संख्या उससे भी ज्यादे है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के कारण

1.किफायती और उपयोग में आसान प्लास्टिक सबसे ज्यादे इस्तेमाल किये जाने वाले पदार्थो में से एक है इससे डब्बे, बैग, फर्नीचर और अन्य कई उत्पाद बनाये जाते है क्योंकि किफायती होने के साथ इन्हे किसी भी आकार में ढाला जा सकता है। प्लास्टिक के वस्तुओं के बढ़ते उपयोग के कारण ही प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण जैसी गंभीर समस्या उत्पन्न हुई है।

2.नान-बायोग्रेडबल

प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न कचरा दिन-प्रतिदिन बढ़ता जा रहा है, क्योंकि प्लास्टिक एक नान- बायोडिग्रेडबल पदार्थ है इसलिये यह जल और भूमि में विघटित नही होता है। यह वातावरण में सैकेड़ो वर्षो तक बना रहता है, जिससे यह भूमि, जल और वायु प्रदूषण का कारण बनता है

1.जल को प्रदूषित करता है

प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न कचरा पानी के स्त्रोतो जैसे कि, नदियो, समुद्रो तथा महासागरो में मिल जाता है और इन्हे बुरे तरीके से प्रभावित करता है। यही पानी हमारे उपयोग के लिये हम तक पहुंचाया जाता है, इससे कोई भी फर्क नही पड़ता कि हम इन्हे कितना भी छाने यह उपने वास्तविक अवस्था में कभी वापस नही आ सकता और इस पानी के उपयोग से हमारे स्वास्थ्य पर भी नकरात्मक प्रभाव पड़ता है।

2.भूमि को प्रदूषित करता है

भारी मात्रा में प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न होने वाले कचरे का लैंडफिलो में निस्तारण किया जाता है। इसके अलावा हवा द्वारा उड़ा लिये जाने पर प्लास्टिक के छोटे-छोटे टुकड़े एक स्थान से उड़कर दूसरे स्थान पर पहुंचा दिये जाते है और प्लास्टिक के यह टुकड़े हानिकारक रसायन उत्पन्न करते है जोकि मिट्टी के गुण तथा  उर्वरकता को नष्ट कर देता है। यह पेड़-पौधो के वृद्धि को भी प्रभावित करता है, इसके अलावा बेकार पड़े हुए प्लास्टिक से मच्छर और अन्य तरह के कीड़े उत्पन्न होते है जो कई तरह की बिमारिया फैलाते है।

3. समुद्री जीवन के लिये खतरा

4.पशुओ के लिये हानिकारक

ज्यादेतर छुट्टा पशुओं द्वारा कचरे में फेका गया खाना खाया जाता है। वह प्लास्टिक बैगों को अपने खाने के साथ खा लेते है, जो उनके आंतो में फंस जाता है, जिससे अंत में या तो उनकी मृत्यु हो जाती है या फिर उनके अंदर कई गंभीर बिमारीयां उत्पन्न कर देता है।

कई देशो के सरकारो द्वारा प्लास्टिक बैग के उपयोग प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया है क्योंकि इनके द्वारा ही सबसे ज्यादे मात्रा में प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण फैलाया जाता है। हालांकि भारत जैसे कुछ देशो में इन प्रतिबंधो को सही ढंग से लागू नही किया गया है। इसके लिये सरकार को प्लास्टिक बैग के उपयोग को रोकने के लिये कड़े फैसले लेने की आवश्यकता है।

• जागरुकता फैलाकर

इसके साथ ही लोगो में प्लास्टिक कचरे के पर्यावरण पर नकरात्मक प्रभाव को लेकर लोगो में जागरुकता फैलाने की भी आवश्यकता है। यह कार्य टेलीविजन और रेडियो विज्ञापनो, होर्डिगों तथा सोशल मीडीया के माध्यमों से आसानी से किया जा सकता है।

• प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को कम करने के कुछ अन्य आसान उपाय

• प्लास्टिक बैगों का उपयोग ना करके

पलास्टिक बैग टूटकर छोटे-छोटे टुकड़ो में विभक्त होकर पानी के स्रोतों में मिल जाता है जिससे यह मिट्टी में मिलकर पेड़-पौधो की वृद्धि पर भी नकरात्मक प्रभाव डालता है। इसके साथ ही यह जलीय जीवन पर भी हानिकारक प्रभाव डालता है। ज्यादेतर यह बैग किराने का सामान लाने के लिए उपयोग किये जाते है यदि हम चाहे तो आसानी से इनका उपयोग बंद करके पुनरुपयोग होने वाले कपड़े के बैगों को अपना सकते है।

• बोतलबंद पानी का उपयोग बंद करके

बोतलबंद पानी प्लास्टिक के बोतलो और ग्लासो में आता है। यह खराब पानी के बोतल और ग्लास, प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण में अहम भूमिका निभाते है। एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक होने के नाते यह हमारा कर्तव्य है कि हम बोतलबंद पानी को खरीदना बंद कर दे और इसके बजाय अपने खुद के पानी के बोतलो का इस्तेमाल करे।

• बाहर का खाना मंगाना बंद करके

ज्यादेतर बाहर का खाना प्लास्टिक के डिब्बो में पैक करके दिया जाता है, जोकि प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न होने वाले कचरे का कारण बनता है। इसलिये रेस्तरां से खाना मंगाने के जगह हमें घर का बना हुआ भोजन करना चाहिये, जोकि हमारे स्वास्थ्य और पर्यावरण दोनो के लिये ही अच्छा है।

बहुत सारी रिसायकलिंग कंपनियां इस्तेमाल किये हुए प्लास्टिक के डिब्बे, बोतल, और अन्य चीजे लेती है, तो इन्हे फेंकने के बजाय हमें इन चीजो को इन रीसायकलिंग कंपनियो को दे देना चाहिये।

• किराने का सामान थोक में खरीदकर

किराने के छोटे-छोटे कई पैकेटो को खरीदने से अच्छा है कि हम एक बड़ा पैकेट खरीद ले क्योकि ज्यादेतर यह चीजे प्लास्टिक के छोटे-छोटे पन्नीयो या डिब्बो में पैक होते है, इस तरीके को अपनाकर भी हम प्लास्टिक के कचरे में कमी ला सकते है।

प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न होने वाले कचरे का निस्तारण और इसकी बढ़ती मात्रा एक चुनौती बनते जा रही है, जिससे प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण जैसी समस्या ने इतना भयावह रुप धारण कर लिया है। इन दिये गये कुछ आसाना और दिर्घकालिक उपायो से हम प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के स्तर को कम करने में अपनी सराहनीय भूमिका निभा सकते है।

प्लास्टिक के निस्तारण के साथ-साथ ही इसका उत्पादन भी उतनी ही गंभीर समस्या है। प्लास्टिक के निर्माण में कई तरह के जीवाश्म ईंधनो जैसे की तेल और पेट्रोलियम आदि का उपयोग किया जाता है। यह जीवाश्म ईंधन गैर-नवकरणीय संसाधन होते है और इन्हे प्राप्त करना भी काफी कठिन होता है, इन जीवाश्म ईंधनो को निकालने में काफी निवेश और संसाधनो की आवश्यकता होती है और यदि हम इसी तरह प्लास्टिक उत्पादन में इनका उपयोग करते रहेगे तो वह दिन दूर नही है जब ये समाप्त हो जायेगे, जिससे हमारे बाकी के जरुरी काम भी ठप पड़ जायेंगे।

समुद्री जीवनः प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण से सबसे बुरी तरह से प्रभावित

प्लास्टिक बैग और अन्य प्लास्टिक के कण हवा तथा पानी द्वारा समुद्रो, महासागरो और अन्य पानी के स्रोतों में मिला दिये जाते है। वह लोग जो पिकनिक और कैपिंग के लिये जाते है, उनके द्वारा भी प्लास्टिक बोतलो और पैकटो के द्वारा प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण फैलाया जाता है।

यह सब नदीयों और समुद्रों में पहुंच जाता है, जिससे समुद्री जीवो के लिये एक गंभीर संकट उत्पन्न हो जाता है, क्योकि निरीह जीवो द्वारा इन प्लास्टिको को अपना भोजन समझकर खा लिया जाता है। जिससे मछलियों, कछुओं और अन्य समुद्री जीवो के स्वास्थ्य पर गंभीर संकट उत्पन्न हो जाता है। प्रतिवर्ष कई समुद्री जीव प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण की समस्या इस से अपनी जान गवा बैठते है और शोधकर्ताओं का दावा है कि आने वाले समय में इस संख्या में और इजाफा होने वाला है।

समुद्री जीवो की तरह ही, छुट्टा पशुओ द्वारा भी कूड़े में इधर-उधर बिखरे प्लास्टिक को भोजन समझकर खा लिया जाता है। कई बार इन पशुओं द्वारा काफी ज्यादे मात्रा में प्लास्टिक में खा लिया जाता है जोकि उनके आंतो में फंस जाता है, जिससे की उनकी मृत्यु हो जाती है। प्लास्टिक का कचरा समय बितने के साथ ही और भी ज्यादे खराब होता जाता है, जिससे यह मच्छर, मख्खियों, और दुसरे किड़ो के पनपने लिये एक अच्छा निवास स्थान बन जाता है, जोकि विभिन्न प्रकार के बिमारियों का कारण बनती है।

प्लास्टिक से उत्पन्न हुआ कचरा हमारे नदियों तथा पानी पीने के अन्य स्रोतों को भी दूषित कर रहा है। प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के कारण हमारे पीने के पानी की गुणवत्ता दिन-प्रतिदिन खराब होती जा रही है, जिसेस इस पानी को पीने के कारण कई सारी बिमारीयां उत्पन्न हो रही है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण से निपटने के लिये सामूहिक प्रयास

प्लास्टिक पदार्थो का निस्तारण करना काफी चुनौतिपूर्ण कार्य है। जब प्लास्टिक का कचरा लैंडफिलो या पानी के स्रोतों में पहुंच जाता है तब यह एक गंभीर संकट बन जाता है। लकड़ी और कागज की तरह हम इसका दहन करके भी इसे समाप्त नही कर सकते। क्योंकि प्लास्टिक के दहन से इससे कई सारी हानिकारक गैसे उत्पन्न होती है, जोकि पृथ्वी के वातावरण और जनजीवन के लिये काफी हानिकारक हैं। इस वजह से प्लास्टिक वायु, जल तथा भूमि तीनो तरह के प्रदूषण फैलाता है।

हम चाहे जितना भी प्रयास कर ले परन्तु प्लास्टिक उत्पादो के उपयोग को पूर्ण रुप से बंद नही कर सकते पर हम चाहे तो निश्चित रुप से इसके उपयोग को कम जरुर कर सकते है। प्लास्टिक से बने कई उत्पाद जैसे कि प्लास्टिक बैग, डिब्बे, ग्लास, बोतल, आदि की जगह हम आसनी से पर्यावरण के अनुकूल अन्य उत्पादो जैसे कि कपड़े, पेपर बैग, स्टील से बने बर्तनो और अन्य चीजो का उपयोग कर सकते है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को नियंत्रित करना मात्र सरकार की जिम्मेदारी नही है और वास्तव में अकेले सरकार इस विषय में कुछ कर भी नही सकती है। एक जिम्मेदार नागरिक होने के नाते यह हमारा कर्तव्य है कि प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण को कम करने में हम भी अपना महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दे।

पिछले कुछ दशको में प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण का स्तर काफी तेजी से बढ़ा है, जोकि एक गंभीर चिंता का विषय है। हमारे द्वारा प्लास्टिक के बढ़ते उपयोग को रोककर ही इस भयावह समस्या पर काबू पाया जा सकता है। हममे से हर एक व्यक्ति को इस समस्या के निवारण के लिये आगे आना होगा। और इसे रोकने में अपना बहूमुल्य योगदान देना होगा।

यह प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण सभी प्रकार के प्रदुषण को बढ़ावा देता है। यह मुख्य रूप से मृदा प्रदुषण , जल प्रदुषण और वायु प्रदुषण को बढ़ावा देता है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण के कारण Causes of Plastic Pollution in Hindi

प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण के निम्नलिखित कारण हैं-

• प्लास्टिक महंगा नहीं है, इसलिए  यह अधिक उपयोग किया जाता है। इसने हमारी भूमि कब्ज़ा कर लिया है, जब इसको समाप्त किया जाता है, तो यह आसानी से विघटित नहीं होता है, और इसलिए वह उस क्षेत्र के भूमि और मिट्टी को प्रदूषित करता है।
• एकबार ही प्रयोग के बाद अधिकांश लोग प्लास्टिक की बोतलें और पॉलिथीन बैग को फेंक देते हैं। इससे भूमि और साथ ही महासागरों में प्रदूषण दर बढ़ जाती है, मुख्यतः विकासशील और अविकसित देशों में इसकी बजह से प्रदुषण बढ़ रहा है।
• प्लास्टिक बैग, प्लास्टिक की बोतलें,  त्याग किए गए इलेक्ट्रॉनिक समान, खिलौने आदि, विशेषकर शहरी इलाकों में नहरों, नदियों और झीलों के जल के निकास को रोक रहे है।
• हर साल दुनिया भर में लगभग 100 मिलियन टन प्लास्टिक का उत्पादन होता है इसमें से 25 मिलियन टन ना नष्ट होने योग्य प्लास्टिक पर्यावरण में जमा हो रही हैं।
• अमेरिका में ठोस सार्वजनिक कचरे की कुल मात्रा में से लगभग 20% प्लास्टिक और संबंधित पॉलिमर हानिकारक होते हैं। लगभग 50 मिलियन अमरीकी डॉलर US की प्लास्टिक उद्योग का मूल्य है।
• दुनिया भर में लगभग 70,000 टन प्लास्टिक महासागरों और समुद्रों में फेंक दिए जाते हैं। मछली पकड़ने के जाल और अन्य सिंथेटिक सामग्री को जेलिफ़िश और स्थलीय और साथ ही जलीय जानवरों द्वारा भोजन समझकर, खा लिया जाता है, जिससे उनके शरीर के अंदर प्लास्टिक के जैव-संचय हो सकते हैं। इससे श्वसन मार्ग में अवरोध होता है, अंत में इस वजह से हर साल कई मछलियों और कछुओं की मौत हो जाती हैं।

नीचे हमने प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण के मुख्य प्रभावों के विषय में बताया है-

• ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में इस प्रकार के प्रदूषण और संबंधित प्रभावों की अधिक संभावना है, क्योंकि इन क्षेत्रों के अधिकांश लोग प्लास्टिक के बड़े पैमाने पर उपयोग करते हैं।
• हमारे द्वारा फेंके गये गंदे कचरे में प्लास्टिक की थैली और बोतलों को कई आवारा जानवरों द्वारा खा लिया जाता है जिससे उनकी मृत्यु हो सकती है।
• बरसात के मौसम में, सड़क पर पड़ा हुआ प्लास्टिक का कचरा जो कि पास के जलाशय और नहरों और नालियों में वह जाता है,इस कचरे को मछलियों द्वारा खा लिया लिया जाता है जिसके कारण मछलियों को श्वसन में परेशानी होने लगती है। इसके अलावा, इन सिंथेटिक सामग्री से पानी की गुणवत्ता में भी कमी आ जाती है।
• जब खुले में प्लास्टिक फेंक दिया जाता है, तो प्लास्टिक की सामग्री पानी के संपर्क में आती है और खतरनाक रसायनों का निर्माण करती है। यदि इन यौगिकों से भूजल का स्तर में कमी आती हैं, और जल की गुड़वत्ता कम हो जाती है।
• समुद्री जल निकायों में प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के कारण जलीय जानवरों की असंख्य मृत्यु हो रही है, और इससे यह जलीय पौधे भी काफी हद तक प्रभावित हो रहे  है।

• हमारे घर में पानी की गुणवत्ता बिगड़ती जा रही है, क्योंकि प्लास्टिक में कुछ जहरीले रसायनों जैसे स्टाइरीन ट्रिमर, बिस्फेनोल A, और पॉलीस्टायर्न के उप-उत्पाद उपस्थित होता है। ये उत्पाद प्रतिदिन पीने के पानी की स्थिति ख़राब कर रहे हैं बिस्फेनोल A हानिकारक रासायनिक है जो जानवरों की प्रजनन प्रणाली को नुकसान पहुँचाता है।
• जानवरों के अंदर प्लास्टिक के जैव-संचय, प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण सबसे हाल के प्रभावों में से एक है। जमी हुई प्लास्टिक हानिकारक रसायनों को मुक्त करती है, और छोटे टुकड़ों में भी विभाजित हो जाती है, और जानवरों की मृत्यु के बाद, उनका शरीर विघटित होता है, लेकिन प्लास्टिक के टुकड़े अन्य जानवरों के लिए खतरे के रूप में रह जाते हैं।
• हवा एक जगह से दूसरे स्थान पर प्लास्टिक का जमाव करती है, जिससे भूमि कूड़े में बढ़ोत्तरी होती है। यह, पेड़, टॉवर, इमारतों आदि सभी जगह को प्रभावित करती है, और कोई भी जानवर जो उनके संपर्क के क्षेत्र में आता है, उसमें उलझ जाता है और उनका दम घुटने के कारण उनकी मौत हो जाती है।
• प्लास्टिक के जलने से वायुमंडल के प्रदूषण बढ़ता है और ज़हरीली रसायनों का विमोचन जो की, वायु प्रदूषण का एक कारण होता है। जब इनको रीसाइकिल किया जाता है, तो मजदूरों की आवश्यकता होती है, जो ज़हरीली रसायनों में साँस लेते है, जिस कारण उनको त्वचा और श्वसन समस्याओं के जोखिम उठाने पढ़ते हैं।

प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण के समाधान और निवारक उपाय Plastic Pollution solutions and preventive measures in Hindi

निम्नलिखित तरीकों से हम अपने पृथ्वी को प्लास्टिक प्रदुषण से मुक्त बना सकते हैं –

• यद्यपि प्लास्टिक से बने सामान सुविधाजनक होते हैं, यह वह समय है जब हमें पृथ्वी पर प्लास्टिक की वजह से होने वाले नुकसान की जानकारी होनी चाहिए। इससे पहले की हमारी पृथ्वी की तस्वीर और भी बदसूरत हो जाये, बेहतर होगा कि आप इस प्रकार के प्रदूषण को कम करने के लिए कुछ प्रभावी निवारक उपाय अपनाये।
• प्लाटिक की थैली के उपयोग में गिरावट लाने के लिए, हमें शॉपिंग के लिए जितना संभव हो पेपर या कपड़े से बने बैग का उपयोग करना चाहिए, और घर पर प्लास्टिक बैग लाने से बचना चाहिए।
• प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण की समस्या की गंभीरता को समझना चाहिए, और पानी में और भूमि पर फेंके गये डंपिंग प्लास्टिक के परिणाम के बारे में समझना चाहिये। प्लास्टिक के उचित निपटान सुनिश्चित करना।

आधुनिक युग में जहां एक ओर विज्ञान के द्वारा मानव को अनेक सुख-सुविधाएं प्राप्त हुई हैं वहीे दूसरी ओर विज्ञान से अनेक भयंकर समस्याएं भी उत्पन्न हुई हैं। आज प्लास्टिक की समस्या एक ऐसी ही समस्या है जो विश्व के सामने एक चुनौती बन गई है।

प्लास्टिक का उदय- प्राचीन काल में लोग समान लाने के लिए कपडे़ के थैलों का प्रयोग करते थे तथा छोटे-मोटे समान के लिए कागज के लिफाफों का प्रयोग किया जाता था, परन्तु कागज में तीव्र गति से वृद्वि होने के कारण धीरे-धीरे कागज के लिफाफों का चलन समाप्त हो गया और इनके स्थान पर छोटे-बडे़ सभी समाज के लिए प्लास्टिक के थैलों का प्रयोग किया जाने लगा।

आज मनुष्य द्वारा छोटे-छोटे सामान के लिए जिन प्लास्टिक के छोटे थैलों का प्रयोग किया जा रहा है उन्हें सामान्य भाषा में पन्नी ;पाॅलिथिनद्ध कहते हैं जो हमारे लिए एक बहुत बडी़ समस्या बन गई है।

प्लास्टिक अत्यन्त हानिकारक- आधुनिक युग में प्लास्टिक के इन लिफाफों द्वारा अनेक प्रकार के रोग उत्पन्न होते हैं। ये नालियों को बन्द कर देते हैं। सड़कों पर पडे़ इन लिफाफों को जब अन्य कागज व कूडे़ के साथ जलाया जाता है तो इसके धुएं से सांस का रोग उत्पन्न होता है।

कूडे़दानों में पडे़ इन  लिफाफों को खाने से गाय व अन्य पशु बीमार पड़ जाते हैं। इन्हें मलबे मे साथ जमीन मे भराव में काम लाना भी खतरनाक है, क्योंकि ये जमीन में गलते नहीं हैं।

उपाय- प्लास्टिक के इस प्रकोप से बचने के लिए सर्वप्रथम उपाय तो इनका उपयोग बन्द करना ही है। छुटकारा पाने का दूसरा प्रमुख उपाय यह है कि इन थ्।ैलियों को न तो जलाना चाहिए और न ही मलबे में दबाना चाहिए, बल्कि इन्हें इकट्ठा करके पुनः प्लास्टिक दानों का रूप देना चाहिए।

जनता को प्लास्टिक से छुटकारा दिलवाने के लिए सरकार का यह कत्र्तव्य है कि वह प्लास्टिक के कचरे को उचित मूल्य पर खरीदे तथा जैसे वह अन्य समान पर सब्सिडी देती है वैसे ही प्लास्टिक पर सब्सिडी दे। तभी हम इस समस्या से छुटकारा पा सकते हैं तथा साथ ही जनता को अखबार व अन्य प्रकार के कागजों के लिफाफों का प्रयोग करने को प्रेरित करें।

इस प्रकार ही समाज को सचेत करके प्लास्टिक के प्रकोप से बचा जा सकता है।

विज्ञान ने मनुष्य को अनेक चीजें प्रदान की है, उनमें प्लास्टिक भी एक है। यह लकड़ी की जगह इस्तेमाल होने लगी है। यह कृत्रिम पदार्थ है। इस पर पानी, धूप, ठंड आदि का कम प्रभाव पड़ता है। आजकल इससे अनेक वस्तुएँ बनने लगी हैं; जैसे-डिब्बे, कुर्सी, मेज, बोर्ड, दरवाजें, साज-सज्जा का सामान आदि। इनका निर्माण शीघ्र होता है तथा सुन्दरता में भी यह चार चाँद लगाती है। इस पर कीड़ों का असर नहीं होता। जहाँ इसके फायदे हैं, वहाँ इसके नुकसान भी है। प्लास्टिक से पर्यावरण को सर्वाधिक नुकसान है। यह सैकड़ों वर्ष तक अपघटित नहीं होती। इससे निकले रसायन प्रदूषण फैलाते हैं। दूसरे, स्वास्थ्य की दृष्टि से प्लास्टिक अन्य प्राकृतिक उत्पादों की तुलना में हानिकारक है। प्लास्टिक की थैलियाँ नालों को रोक देती हैं।

प्लास्टिक का इतिहास जानने से पहले प्लास्टिक क्या है ( What Is Plastic In Hindi )? इस प्रश्न का उत्तर जानने का प्रयास करेंगे। प्लास्टिक एक ग्रीक भाषा के शब्द “प्लास्टिकोज” से बना हुआ है जिसका अर्थ “बनाना” है। प्लास्टिक कार्बनिक और अकार्बनिक प्रदार्थ से बना होता है। प्लास्टिक बहुलक प्रदार्थ (Polymer) से बना होता है जो पेट्रोकेमिकल से प्राप्त होते है।

प्लास्टिक में बेंजीन, ऐथेलिन, प्रोपिलीन जैसे बहुलक होते है। ये असंतृप्त हाइड्रोकार्बन है जो बनने के बाद सख्त हो जाते है। प्लास्टिक के निर्माण में बहुलिकरण की प्रकिया उपयोग में ली जाती है। वैसे प्लास्टिक निर्माण की प्रक्रिया उसके प्रकार पर निर्भर करती है। प्लास्टिक विद्युत का कुचालक भी है, इसलिए इलेक्ट्रिकल उपकरण इसी के बनाये जाते है। इसी गुण के कारण विद्युत तारों पर प्लास्टिक की खोल भी चढ़ाई जाती है।

मैटेरियल प्लास्टिक से बने उत्पाद वजन में अन्य प्रदार्थ के उत्पादों से हल्के होते है। कुछ प्रकार के प्लास्टिक कम घनत्व के होते है। प्लास्टिक पानी और मिट्टी में आसानी से विघटित नही होता है। इसके पूर्णतः विघटन में कई सौ वर्ष भी लग सकते है।

प्लास्टिक के प्रकार Types Of Plastic In Hindi

प्लास्टिक ( Plastic ) थर्मोप्लास्टिक और थर्मोसेटिंग दो प्रकार की होती है।

1. थर्मोप्लास्टिक (Thermoplastic) – इस प्रकार की प्लास्टिक गर्म करने पर कई रूप ले सकती है। गर्म करने पर यह प्लास्टिक मुलायम हो जाती है जबकि ठंडी करने पर सख्त हो जाती है। इसके साथ कई बार गर्म करने की प्रोसेस दोहराई जा सकती है।

उदाहरण – पोली विनाइल क्लोराइड (PVC), पॉलीस्तीरीन, नायलॉन इत्यादि थर्मोप्लास्टिक के उदाहरण है।

2. थर्मोसेटिंग (Thermosetting) – इस प्रकार की प्लास्टिक एक बार गर्म करने पर सेट हो जाती है। इसे बार बार गर्म नही किया जा सकता है। थर्मोसेटिंग प्लास्टिक केवल एक बार ही इच्छित आकार में ढल सकती है।

उदाहरण – वीटल, बेकेलाइट इत्यादि थर्मोसेटिंग के उदाहरण है।

प्लास्टिक का आविष्कार किसने किया Plastic Ka Avishkar Kisne Kiya

दोस्तों, दुनिया की पहली मानव निर्मित प्लास्टिक का आविष्कार वर्ष 1862 में अलेक्जेंडर पार्केस नामक रसायनविद ने किया था। वो इंग्लैंड के निवासी थे जिन्होंने कार्बनिक पदार्थ सेलूलोज को बनाया था। प्लास्टिक के आविष्कार में अमेरिकी नागरिक लियो बैकलैंड का हाथ भी था। उन्होंने वर्ष 1907 में बेकेलाइट नामक पहले कृत्रिम प्लास्टिक का निर्माण किया था।

बैकलैंड ने फिनॉल और फॉर्मेहिलड़ से इसे बनाया था। सर्वप्रथम उन्होंने ही प्लास्टिक टर्म का इस्तेमाल किया था। प्लास्टिक में सबसे अधिक इस्तेमाल होने वाली पॉलीथिन का आविष्कार जर्मन वैज्ञानिक मिस्ट हैन्स वॉन ने किया था

• प्लास्टिक से कई प्रकार के उत्पाद बनाये जाते है। आपके दैनिक जीवन में उपयोग होने वाले लगभग हर उत्पाद प्लास्टिक से बने हुए है। टूथब्रश से लेकर पानी भरने के लिए बाल्टी तक प्लास्टिक की बनी होती है।

• बच्चों के खिलौने भी प्लास्टिक के बने होते है। नल या लाइट फिटिंग में इस्तेमाल होने वाले पाइप भी प्लास्टिक मेटेरियल के बने होते है। यहां तक कि हमारे मोबाइल भी इसी के बने होते है।
• हम प्लास्टिक से चारों और से घिरे हुए है। प्लास्टिक से बने उत्पाद जल्दी खराब नही होते है। इस पर हवा या पानी का भी कोई प्रभाव नही होता है। किसी भी धातु के मुकाबले प्लास्टिक सस्ती होती है। यही एक बड़ा कारण है कि आजकल कई वस्तु प्लास्टिक की बनी होती है।

प्लास्टिक से होने वाले नुकसान Plastic Pollution And Side Effects

इस प्रदार्थ से पृथ्वी के पर्यावरण को काफी नुकसान हो रहा है। पर्यावरण प्रदूषण के लिए प्लास्टिक काफी हद तक जिम्मेदार है। प्लास्टिक पर्यावरण को दूषित करता है। यह कई सौ वर्षों तक नही मिटता है। प्लास्टिक आसानी से विघटित नही होता जिससे कई सौ वर्षों बाद भी अपने रूप में बना रहता है। यह आसानी से नष्ट होने वाला प्रदार्थ नही है, इसलिए खतरनाक है।

प्लास्टिक के उत्पादों में कई हानिकारक कैमिकल्स होते है जो पर्यावरण को नुकसान पहुंचाते है। प्लास्टिक से हमारी नदियां, समुद्र और झीलें प्रदूषित हुई है। इन जल स्रोतों में रहने वाले जीव जंतुओं पर भी प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण का व्यापक प्रभाव हुआ है। प्लास्टिक के जलने पर विषैली गैस निलकती है जो नुकसानदेह होती है।

प्लास्टिक से निकलने वाले खतरनाक रसायनों से मनुष्य और अन्य जीवों के स्वास्थ्य को नुकसान होता है। कई प्रकार की गम्भीर बीमारियां प्लास्टिक पॉल्युशन से होती है। प्लास्टिक मिट्टी में पड़े रहते है जिससे मृदा प्रदूषण होता है।

लोग सिंगल उपयोग होने वाले प्लास्टिक बैग और बॉटल्स पानी या सड़को पर फेंक देते है। इसी कारण प्लास्टिक से प्रदूषण बढ़ता है। इस प्लास्टिक कचरे को गाय , बकरी जैसे पालतू जानवर खा जाते है। इस कारण इन जानवरों की मृत्यु तक हो जाती है।

प्लास्टिक की जानकारी

एक अनुमान के मुताबिक हर वर्ष करीब 100 मिलियन टन प्लास्टिक से बने उत्पादों का निर्माण होता है। इनमें से ज्यादातर प्लास्टिक नष्ट नही हो पाती है। आपको जानकर हैरानी होगी कि दुनिया में मौजूद तेल का 8 फीसदी प्लास्टिक निर्माण में उपयोग होता है।

प्लास्टिक से होने वाले प्रदूषण को रोकने के लिए इसका कम से कम उपयोग किया जाना चाहिए। प्लास्टिक बैग की जगह कपड़े के बैग उपयोग करने चाहिए। प्लास्टिक कचरे को यहां वहां नही फेंखना चाहिए। प्लास्टिक को खत्म नही किया जा सकता है लेकिन इसकी रीसाइक्लिंग की जा सकती है।

प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण के कारण | Causes for Plastic Pollution

• किफायती और उपयोग में आसान- प्लास्टिक को आसानी से कोई भी आकार दे सकते है और इसकी वजह से प्लास्टिक आइटम बनाए में ज्यादा समय भी नहीं लगता ओर बड़ी आसानी से हम कई प्रकार के समान बना सकते हैं। प्लास्टिक के समान बाजार में बड़े ही सस्ते दामों में मिलते है ओर इसलीय लोग ज्यादा से ज्यादा इसका इस्तेमाल करते है और इसी की वजह से प्रदूषण की मात्र बढ़ जाती हैं।
• नान-बायोग्रेडबल- प्लास्टिक एक non -biodegradable पदार्थ है जिसके चलते यह जमीन पर या फिर भूमि में विघटित नहीं होता ओर कई हजार वर्षों तक पद रहता है ओर इसकी वजह से भूमि, जल,ओर वायु प्रदूषित होती हैं।
• प्लास्टिक क्षय होता है परंतु विघटित नही होता है- प्लास्टिक का समान लंबे समय तक पड़े रहने से छोटे छोटे भागों में विभाजित तो हो जाता है और मिट्टी और पानी में मिल जाता है जिसके कारण भी प्रदूषण बढ़ जाता हैं।

• प्लास्टिक उत्पादन पर नियंत्रण करके
• प्लास्टिक के वस्तुओ पर प्रतिबंध लगाकर
• जागरुकता फैलाकर
• प्लास्टिक बैगों का उपयोग ना करके
• बोतलबंद पानी का उपयोग बंद करके
• बाहर का खाना मंगाना बंद करके
• किराने का सामान थोक में खरीदकर

• यह बहुत ही सस्ते दामों से आसानी से काही पर भी उपलब्ध होता हैं।
• इसे हम कई प्रकार की वस्तुएँ बनाने में उपयोग कर सकते है जेसे पनि की बोतल, पेन, प्लास्टिक की थैलियाँ , कप आदि।
• इनको आसानी से कोई भी आकार में ढाल जा सकता हैं।
• यह जंग रहित होते हैं।
• यह केमिकल प्रतिरोधी है।
• इसका उपयोग electroics,packaging, building,transportation industries में बड़े पैमाने पर किया जाता हैं।
• यह गंध हीन होते हैं।

प्लास्टिक से जुड़ी हानि नीचे दी गई  हैं:-

• प्लास्टिक को जलाने से यह वायु को प्रदूषित करता है क्योंकि इससे निकालने वाला धुआँ जहरीला होता हैं।
• यह गैर नवीकरणीय संसाधन हैं।
• यह non-biodegradable है।
• पॉइज़नस गैस के द्वारा जहरीला धुआँ cancer जैसी बीमारी को बढ़ावा देता हैं।
• यह काम गर्मी प्रतिरोधी और बेकार नामनीयता वाले होते हैं।
• यह नालियों ओर नालों को चोक कर हमारे पर्यावरण को दूषित करते है और उसे नुकसान पहुचाते हैं।

प्लास्टिक को रोकने के उपाय:

• इससे बनी वस्तुओ का उपयोग न करे ओर इसका बहिष्कार करे ।
• प्लास्टिक से बने समान का लंबे समय तक उपयोग करे जब तक वह पूरी तरह से खराब न हो जाएँ।
• इससे बनी वस्तुओं का इस्तेमाल करने से बचे ।
• दुकान पर समान खरीदते वक्त कागज य कपड़े से बने थैले आदि का इस्तेमाल करे।
• खाने की वस्तुओ में स्टील और मिट्टी के बर्तनों का उपयोग करे।
• प्लास्टिक खरीदते वक्त पीईटीई (PETE) और एचडीपीई (HDPE) के समान को प्राथमिकता दे क्योंकि यह रिसाइकिल हो जाता हैं।

प्लास्टिक का वर्गीकरण। Classification of Plastic

आकार के हिसाब से इसका वर्गीकरण किया जाता है जो की इस प्रकार हैं।

• 25 mm से अधिक – मैक्रोप्लास्टिक(Maicroplastic)
• 5-25 mm – मेसोप्लास्टिक(Mesoplastic)
• 0.1 – 5 mm – माइक्रोप्लास्टिक(Microplastic)

Plastic Pollution Essay in Hindi: हमारी धरती पर पोलूशन यानी प्रदूषण बहुत तेजी से बढ़ रहा है, जिसके काफी कारण है, उन्हीं में से एक सबसे बड़ा कारण प्लास्टिक का उपयोग करना है। प्लास्टिक के कारण पृथ्वी पर बहुत तेजी के साथ प्रदूषण बढ़ रहा है, इसका सीधा प्रभाव पृथ्वी पर रह रहे मनुष्य जाति पर पढ़ रहा है। एक समय ऐसा आएगा कि इंसानियत को अपने प्लास्टिक के इस्तेमाल पर शर्मिंदगी आएगी, लेकिन हमने सही समय पर प्लास्टिक से हो रहे प्रदूषण पर नियंत्रण नहीं पाया, तो आने वाले कुछ सालों में अमित प्लास्टिक से होने वाली पोलूशन का काफी बड़ा खामियाजा भुगतना पड़ सकता है। आजम इस आर्टिकल में इसी विषय पर बात करने वाली है, तो चलिए बिना किसी देरी के शुरू करते है, भारत को प्लास्टिक मुक्त देश कैसे बनाया जाए।

Plastic has become an inseparable and integral part of our lives. The amount of plastics consumed annually has been growing steadily. Its low density, strength, user-friendly designs, fabrication capabilities, long life, low weight and low cost are the factors behind such phenomenal growth.

Plastics may be the most polarizing material of modern times. It provides a series of incredible benefits that help us every day, but the product can also be one of the most harmful substances on our planet. It was a word that originally meant the product was pliable and easily shaped. It is only recent definitions that now have the term apply to a variety of polymers.

The first plastic product came about because of the research performed by John Wesley Hyatt in 1869. He invented the first synthetic polymer in an effort to claim a $10,000 prize that was announced as a way to provide a substitute for ivory. Billiards was growing in popularity in the United States, and the original balls were made from wild elephant tusks. Hyatt discovered that by treating cotton fiber cellulose with camphor, a product that could be crafted into a variety of shapes became possible.

This original celluloid received immediate praise as the savior of elephants and tortoises. We felt like we could protect the natural world from the human’s destructive need to consume. As new polymers went into the development process, the plastics advantages and disadvantages required constant review to avoid detrimental environmental impacts.

List of the Advantages of Plastics

1. Many plastics have a long lifespan that encourages reuse. Plastics don’t need to be a single-use product or be treated as disposable. Many forms of this material have a long lifespan that is equal to or greater than what other materials provided. A well-made and maintained PVC pipe has the capability of providing service for up to a century. Construction plastics have an average lifespan of 35 years. When we continue to use these items instead of throwing them away, then we can promote a lower waste rate instantly.

If you reuse plastic items at least seven times, then you’re saving just as many energy resources than if you’d recycled the product.

2. Plastic production methods compare favorably to many other materials. The plastics manufacturing process can be energy-intensive with fossil fuels, but it is still a resource that is more environmentally friendly than other materials. Bamboo provides natural fibers to use, although manufacturers must use chemical processes to turn the content into something useable. Aluminum is another example of a product that plastic beats with this advantage.

Recycling processes can change the comparison at times. It is still a clear advantage that plastics can provide when consistent reuse occurs. Even if you choose a fabric bag over a plastic one, you must use the reusable bag at least 40 times before you’re matching the environmental footprint of a similar plastic product. Conventional cotton bags require 7,100 uses before creating a neutral investment.

3. Plastics take up less space in our landfills. Even though it can take a significant amount of time for plastic materials to break down in a landfill, the amount of space that it takes up in these waste disposal areas is minimal when compared to other items. Paper products take up seven times more volume. When we can divert these items toward recycling programs or other uses, then we can start managing our landfill areas more effectively.

4. Methane doesn’t form when plastics start decomposing. Organic materials release greenhouse gases when they start decomposing. The focus of this process is often on carbon dioxide, but the methane that gets emitted is extremely problematic. When compared to CO2, methane is up to 20 times more potent as a reflecting atmospheric product.

Plastics don’t emit this gas when it starts breaking down, which means it is easier to calculate the total lifecycle impact of the product.

5. It provides a safe way to transport our needed items. One of the reasons why we use plastics for bottles that contain water and other beverages is because it keeps the product safe. We use the material to quickly and affordably get water to vulnerable populations all over the world. If a city experiences a shortage or emergency supplies are necessary after a natural disaster, we use this product to ensure that people can have their needs met.

Certain types of plastic were found to be potentially harmful with this advantage in the past, so legislative bans were put into place to prevent their use.

6. We have multiple ways to manage plastic waste. Heat is one of the most common methods used to process plastic waste or create recycling opportunities. It isn’t the only option that’s available to use today. We can use pyrolysis or gasification to process this material with minimal emissions or pollution. It is even possible to shred the materials to create new fabrics from them.

Although the cost of the alternative processing methods isn’t economically sustainable in some communities, this advantage is still present and worth considering. Some plastic bottles are even more eco-friendly than other materials when measured across several environmental indicators.

7. Plastics contain a high energy density to consider. Incinerating plastics can be quite useful in some situations because of its high energy density rating. This material offers a significant energy output for cement kilns or incineration because we create it with the use of petroleum hydrocarbons. That means we can use it as a direct replacement for fossil fuel combustion since the foundation of the product comes from an energy resource that we all use.

The paper products sector in the United Kingdom uses almost the same amount of energy as the plastics and rubber industries. That’s how useful this material can be from an energy standpoint.

8. Plastics are an affordable material. We can keep costs down for a variety of items because of the low price point that’s available for plastics. Our established manufacturing processes allow us to create several million tons of this material for a variety of purposes, ranging from packaging to straws. We can modify the chemistry of the material to provide specific beneficial properties for its end use, including the option to make it softer, harder, malleable, or durable.

9. The plastics industry is a significant contributor to the global economy. The global plastic industry creates a market worth over $1 trillion annually. Over 31,000 people in the United States are directly employed in the manufacturing of plastic bags. The plastics industry in the U.S. is currently the eighth-largest one presently operating.

List of the Disadvantages of Plastics

1. Plastics typically come from non-renewable resources. Although the first plastic materials came from plant-based fibers, most of the items that we produce today have fossil fuels as their foundation. It’s usually petroleum, but we can also use natural gas to develop this product. About 4% of these fuels goes directly into the plastics industry to create new products. When we look at the number of resources consumed during the refinement process and the expected rise in demand, the fossil fuel cost of plastics could reach 20% within the next decade.

2. The majority of the pollution found in the world’s oceans is plastic. Up to 80% of all marine debris contains plastic. This problem comes from land and marine sources, often collecting in large areas of open water where currents come together. This issue causes us to find waste on beaches, on land, and even in freshwater sources. Some of the items that get littered most often are plastic straws, stirrers, bottles, lids, and food wrappers.

Removing plastic pollution from ocean surface water comes at the cost of $5 per kilogram, but the item’s reuse value is only $0.30. That’s why the effort to clean up marine areas is being led by non-profit agencies.

3. Plastic pollution can lead to several economic losses. Plastic packaging pollution by itself creates an economic loss of almost $80 billion to the global economy annually. It makes up nearly 50% of all waste from this industry, and virtually every other industry uses the item in some way. Building and construction plastics represent 16% of plastic use, while textiles are responsible for about 15%. Since it isn’t profitable to recycle many of the items, more of it tends to go into waste streams instead of reuse.

The global average for plastic recycling is about 14%. India is one of the world’s leaders by recycling approximately 60% of its items, while the United States comes in close to last in the developed world by recycling only 9%.

4. We cannot infinitely recycle plastic products. Metals can be recycled numerous times into a variety of different products because of the properties of the material. Plastics don’t share that opportunity. We can only reuse or recover it a specific number of times before it loses its quality and integrity. That means we are more likely to down-cycle this product, incinerate it, or stash it in a landfill.

Some plastic products and items can’t be recycled at all, furthering the impact of this disadvantage. Over 93 billion plastic products don’t get touched each year, which means they enter into our waste streams.

5. We must spend energy to clean plastics to recycle items. Plastics that have cross-contamination with different types create unusable products. We also need to have the items cleaned before recyclers can turn the things into new pieces.

Some products contain different plastic types in the same item (i.e. a bottle and a lid), creating even more challenges to manage. It’s a disadvantage that makes recycling inefficient at best for some communities – and sometimes impossible.

6. The re-sell chains for recycled plastic are long and challenging to manage. Some recycling processing and re-sell chains for plastics tend to be long and inefficient. One item might change hands several times or travel a long distance to go through the recycling process. When it takes that much energy to reuse or recycle a product, then many of the potential benefits disappear. That’s why some plastics have a high waste rate, especially if they aren’t #1 or #2 options.

This disadvantage is one of the primary reasons why plastic is one of the most common materials found in municipal waste centers and landfills.

7. It takes a long time for plastic products to decompose. Plastic takes a long time to degrade when compared to organic items. A plastic fishing line might take over 600 years to finally break down. Some researchers believe that some forms of this material might never fully decompose, remaining as nano plastics that could influence human, animal, and marine health in a variety of ways.

Even the plastic bags that we use to carry items every day can take 10 to 20 years to decompose naturally – but some of them can take up to an estimated 1,000 years. When you throw away a plastic water bottle, then it could take 450 years.

8. Plastics harm our ocean environments. EcoWatch estimates that 10 metric tons of plastic products, including grocery bags, will wash out to the ocean from Los Angeles every day. Those items break down into small fragments that become microscopic in size and consumed by marine life. Up to 24,000 tons of plastic contaminate our food chain each year. Up to 25% of the fish sold in California markets contained fibrous or whole plastic in the animal’s stomach. The chemicals from the plastic that leeches into these animals could possibly transfer to humans upon consumption.

Plastic is arguably the most revolutionary product in the history of humanity. It gives us a variety of ways to improve the safety of our foods and beverages while providing support mechanisms that create infrastructure benefits that we all use.

We have also discovered that endocrine disruptors are the link between plastic and human health hazards. PCBs and dioxins have already polluted the world’s waterways. BPA, or bisphenol A, is specifically banned because of this trait – although people still receive exposure to it from a variety of sources. The CDC estimates that 95% of people have BPA contamination in their bodies.

When we look at these plastics advantages and disadvantages, it is imperative to remember that ingestion is not the only danger to consider. Simple exposures, the time it takes to decompose, and the litter we create are damaging our planet. We must increase our recycling rates and look for alternatives when it makes sense to decrease our exposure levels.

Although there are many different types of polymers, plastics in general are light and strong. Plastics may be moulded, extruded, cast, and blown into seemingly infinite shapes, films, and foams, as well as drawn into textile fibres. Plastics also make up a large part of coatings, sealants, and glues.

Usage of Plastics

Plastic has become an inseparable component of our daily life. The amount of plastic consumed each year has been gradually increasing. Low density, strength, user-friendly designs, fabrication capabilities, extended life, low weight, and low cost are all characteristics that have contributed to its rapid rise.

Classification of Plastics  

Broadly plastic can be divided into following two types –

Thermoplastics

Thermoplastics 

Thermoplastic polymer is a type of plastic. Thermoplastics are those plastics which can be molded again and again by use of heat. Examples of thermoplastics are polyethene, polystyrene and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Thermoplastic polymers are used in making carry bags, bottles etc. 

Thermosetting plastics are those plastic polymers which cannot be molded again and again by use of heat. These are also known as thermoset polymers. Examples of thermosetting plastic are Bakelite, melamine etc. Thermosetting plastics are used in making handles of utensils, switches and fire-resistant fabric etc.

Polymers and Monomers

Plastics are actually polymers, constructed from lots of repeating units of these monomers. It's like building with blocks, but each type of plastic has its own unique set of monomers, like blocks with different shapes and sizes.

Take Polyethylene (PE) for example – it's like the king of plastics. PE has really strong carbon-carbon bonds, which make it tough and flexible. The simple molecule, ethylene, is its "pearl."

Then there's Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - This plastic is versatile because it adds a chlorine atom to each carbon chain. That makes it stronger and more rigid, perfect for things like pipes and construction.

Lastly, think of Polystyrene (PS) – the one you find in foam cups. Its "pearl" is a benzene ring, which gives it good insulation properties but also makes it a bit brittle. So, in a nutshell, polymers and monomers are like the building blocks that create different types of plastics with unique characteristics.

Plastic Recycling:

It's crucial to recycle plastic to prevent pollution. When plastic isn't recycled promptly, it mixes with other materials, making recycling more challenging. Since plastic is non-biodegradable, it doesn't decompose naturally, contributing to environmental issues. To address this, using biopolymers or biodegradable polymers is essential.

Advantages of Plastics

It can be used to make roads, utensils, wires, pipes etc.

Disadvantages of Plastics

Plastics manufacturing also involves the addition of potentially hazardous compounds like stabilisers or colourants. Many of these have not been subjected to environmental risk assessments, therefore their influence on human health and the environment is unknown at this time.

Phthalates, which are used in the production of PVC, are one such example. PVC has been used in toys for young children in the past, and there have been concerns that when these toys are chewed, phthalates may be produced. The impacts of phthalates on the environment are currently being assessed for risk. The disposal of plastics products also has a significant influence on the environment.

Most plastics are non-biodegradable, and once landfilled, they might take a long time to decompose. With an increasing number of plastic products, especially plastic packaging, being discarded quickly after purchase, the amount of landfill space required by plastic waste is becoming a major concern.

Cheap production and easy availability make plastic very useful, but it has many shortfalls and its harmful effects are a cause of huge concern for us to save our earth and ourselves. Its few disadvantages are listed below –

Natural decomposition of plastic can last from 400-1000 years and few types of plastics are non-degradable as well.

Plastic materials clog waterways, oceans, seas, lakes etc. 1 in 3 species of marine mammals have been found entangled in marine litter. 

Many animals eat plastic materials and die. Over 90% of all seabirds have plastic pieces in their stomachs. 

Plastic is widely used in packaging. Eating food out of plastic containers may cause cancer.

Both creation and recycling of plastic produce toxic gases and residues which causes air and water and land pollution. 

Few additives such as phthalates etc. which are added in plastics to prevent its structure may cause serious hormonal imbalance in males and females. 

Plastic causes many fire hazards. 

Its cost of recycling is also very high. 

Disadvantages of plastic bags are well known, this is the reason why use of  plastic bags have been restricted in most of the countries in the world.

The plastic story doesn't stop at causing pollution. Smart scientists and engineers are busy finding cool solutions to tackle these problems. They're creating eco-friendly plastics made from things that can be renewed. Also, there are better ways to recycle and manage waste responsibly, all to help stop plastic from messing up our planet.
