the case study of vanitas episode 7

The Japanese title of this episode of The Case Study of Vanitas may be “Love,” but the French title is “Femme Fatale.” You've probably heard the phrase before. It literally translates to “lethal woman” (or “deadly woman,” if you prefer), and over the years it's become a term meaning a female character who uses her wiles to get what she wants, even (or especially) if that means unfortunate things for the men who fall into her trap. But there's another term for femme fatale from the early 20th century that bears noting: vamp. Why yes, that is short for “vampire;” it comes from Rudyard Kipling 's 1897 poem The Vampire , which he wrote in response to Philip Burne-Jones' painting from the same year, which is also the year that Dracula was published. (You can see them side-by-side here .) Unlike most vampire novels of the 19th century – with the exception of Sheridan LeFanu's Carmilla (1872) – both Kipling's poem and Burne-Jones' painting depict a female vampire preying on a human man. Since she's quite literally a lethal woman, the word “vampire” was shortened to “vamp” to refer to dangerous and deadly (in a sexy way) ladies.

That technically makes Jeanne fit both the vamp and femme fatale designations, although there's a real argument to be made that none of what she's done with Vanitas is in any way of her own choosing. I'm inclined to that interpretation – both the kiss and the initial bite were completely under Vanitas' control, the former taken without Jeanne's consent and the latter taking explicit advantage of her position, which was a vampire whose mind wasn't clear because of the screams of the curse-bearers. (In more modern terms, we could say that she was drugged.) Just because she more-or-less bit Vanitas the second time of her own volition doesn't mean that their relationship has roots in any kind of mutual anything: Vanitas has taken advantage of her for reasons of his own from the start, and the titling of the episode with the dual epithets “love” and “femme fatale” is entirely Vanitas' own view of things.

In all honesty, that makes Vanitas himself both my least favorite and the least trustworthy part of the series. The latter is almost definitely intentional; apart from revealing what he can do with his book, Vanitas has barely ever given any information in a clear manner. He gives the impression of it at times, but there's always something just a little off about it, like his answer to Noé's question about love. If he truly loves Jeanne, there's something very unsettling about his behavior, because even when he tries to explain it, it sounds much more like he's interested more in what he can get from her. His actions where she's concerned feel very calculated: the kiss, to throw her off guard, followed by the blood-sucking, to force her to mark him, both in service of making him off-limits to any other vampire who might develop a taste for Vanitas. We know that Noé has considered it, but he's got self-control; his issue is now that he can't ever taste Vanitas' blood because he's been marked by another. (And yes, there's probably some romantic jealousy in there.) But quite frankly, no matter how Vanitas might actually feel about Jeanne, she's a much more likely deterrent to other vampires than Noé would be…plus she might be easier to control, something that Vanitas has already proved he's willing and able to do.

The other piece of the Jeanne vs. Noé puzzle is Vanitas' statement that he'd rather love someone who won't love him back. While psychologists could have a field day with that, the anime-important takeaway is that he knows that Noé is much more likely to do that. Platonic or romantic love, it doesn't seem to matter; Vanitas' actions seem to indicate that he's much more comfortable not having anyone tie him down. Noé is a necessity, the person-shaped equivalent of Murr in the way Vanitas treats him.

Vanitas himself may be the hero the vampires need right now, but from what we've seen, I can't think that he's the one they necessarily deserve.

The Case Study of Vanitas is currently streaming on Funimation .

The Case Study of Vanitas’ Complex Shipping Situation

Episode 7 of The Case Study of Vanitas introduces a messy love square that cumulates in a surprisingly progressive dance party.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas , Episode 7, “Love,” now streaming on Funimation.

The creator of The Case Study of Vanitas Jun Mochizuki has been known for her penchant for portraying melodramatic relationships ever since Pandora Hearts , and this is also a major selling point of The Case Study of Vanitas . The entangled romance aspect of the story is on full display in Episode 7 of the anime, appropriately titled “Love”.

The Jeanne/Vanitas ship has been well underway ever since the non-consensual kiss in Episode 3 . It also helps that Jeanne fervently sucked Vanitas’ blood in Episode 4 when she was taken over by bloodlust, even leaving her mark on him. And Jeanne doesn’t even seem to hate Vanitas all that much.

RELATED:  The Case Study of Vanitas and Anime’s History of Seductive Gothic Horror

But of course, this relationship is not as straightforward as one might think. At the end of this episode, Noe asks Vanitas what he loves about Jeanne, and while Vanitas mentions a lot of superficial things like her strength, her looks and how she is easy to tease, in the end, he says that he loves the fact that Jeanne would never love him back, as he won't love someone who also loves him. This hints at some self-loathing tendencies within Vanitas, as well as the way in which he displays his “hatred” toward vampires by curing them; aspects that are very likely related to his tormented past.

Vanitas’ feelings for Jeanne might not even be love. He claims that he doesn’t know what love is, but his heart quickens when he sees Jeanne and he interprets this as love. However, since Vanitas has no experience with romance, demonstrated by the very pubescent way he treats Jeanne, it's possible that he has misinterpreted his feelings.

Although Vanitas thinks Jeanne will never love him, this is not how the show portrays things. Jeanne constantly blushes when she sees Vanitas. She doesn’t dislike being around him and also agreed to suck only his blood from now on. Jeanne may also relate to Vanitas in terms of his self-loathing, as her reputation as a ruthless executioner makes her feel inferior. However, if she falls for Vanitas, then by his logic, he would stop loving her, so this seems like a doomed ship from the beginning.

To complicate things further, there is Noe, who is still quite innocent and knows very little about love. During their meeting where he is served his favorite dessert, tarte Tatin, he takes particular notice of Jeanne. When Jeanne drags Vanitas outside, fearing that he might expose her bloodthirsty secret, Noe feels lost and even abandons his dessert to go after them.

Noe then witnesses Jeanne willingly suck Vanitas’ blood and admits that he feels agony in his heart. While Noe attributes this feeling to also wanting to taste Vanitas’ blood in front of Domi, he may sense it’s something more, because he tries to invite Jeanne to a dance that night. However, he is interrupted by Domi, who clearly loves Noe and doesn’t want him to realize his true feelings. There might still be hope for Domi though, as Noe is used to sucking her blood and is still very obtuse about his feelings, so it might take a long time for him to realize anything.

If all these ships seem hopelessly heterosexual, don't despair, because the melodramatic love square cumulates in a very ingenious way as the foursome participate in a dance party that evening. Domi surprisingly invites Jeanne to dance in an attempt to stop Noe from falling further for Jeanne. While Noe and Vanitas watch, Noe also invites Vanitas to dance, as he thought he could teach Vanitas.

The dance scene is a wonderful moment that disrupts the heteronormativity in the series so far. The matter-of-fact way this moment is portrayed is refreshing. By not making a big deal out of this, the series is also making way (whether consciously or not) for more organic portrayals of same-sex interaction.

Hilariously, as the two same-sex pairs have their progressive dance party, Luca is the only one left on the sidelines, watching as the adults have fun and hoping that he can grow up soon enough to invite Jeanne, as he obviously has a massive crush on her.

It's worth noting that in the manga, it’s a bit more ambiguous who Noe is really jealous of, because it could be interpreted as either Vanitas or Jeanne. However, the anime’s editing makes it very clear that he has feelings for Jeanne, not Vanitas, and Dominique is the only one who notices this -- although this doesn’t mean that the Noe/Vanitas ship is going nowhere. The dance scene in this episode, plus Noe’s heartfelt confession from Episode 6 , solidifies their partnership as something that can potentially transcend distrust, perhaps even jealousy.

But, by that time, the damage is already done as the halls are filled with the voices and screams of blood-thirsty curse-bearers.

REVIEW: ‘The Case Study of Vanitas,’ Episode 7 – “Love”

Olive St. Sauver

Welcome to  The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 7 , where everyone is in love with each other and cannot communicate it to save their lives. Studio Bones ( My Hero Academia ) brings audiences the adaptation of a steampunk vampire fantasy by mangaka Jun Mochizuki ( Pandora Hearts ). The manga is available in English from Yen Press. In Paris, vampires try to coexist among humans. However, an organization called Charlatan is stealing their true names, altering their “formulas,” and turning them into curse bearers. Noé and human doctor Vanitas, armed with the grimoire of the cursed Vampire of the Blue Moon, navigate politics and danger to discover the source of Charlatan.

After a lot of interpersonal relationship drama last week , this week leans more toward the light-hearted, or at the very least softer in its moments. The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 7  is the fun and melodrama of a bisexual rom-com, where everyone is a little clueless. Over a meal, Vanitas decides to taunt both Luca and Jeanne by revealing she had marked him while drinking his blood (let us not forget he is an absolute ass). While those to run off to have a private discussion, leaving the rest of the table stunned, Noé is thrown for a loop about his feelings on the whole situation. The framing of the entire sequence does a decently balanced job. It isn’t entirely clear whether he is jealous and has feelings for Vanitas or Jeanne (although, as per a lot of media, it tends to lean a little more towards the heterosexual option). To me, honestly, it could (and probably is) both. Noé is incredibly young of mind, likely due to his sheltered upbringing, it makes sense for his feelings to be just as unclear to the audience as himself, and it is handled tenderly while also leaving space for a good laugh.

Alas, poor Domi. She is so hung up on dear Noé when truly she and Jeanne should ditch the two men and run off together. The sight of them dancing and Domi’s flirting is enough to send that ship sailing in my book. Vampire boy Luca laments that he is too young and is hung up on an adorable crush on Jeanne, which is refreshing to see portrayed in a way that doesn’t feel uncomfortable or awkward. Sparkles, slo-mo, and close-ups, both sexy and cute, on blushing faces, make The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 7  quite the episode. For those who have fun shipping characters, prepare to ship everyone with everyone. The Venn Diagram is a big bisexual circle, and the show is a blast for it.

There are serious moments as well. Vanitas is an ass to Jeanne, that is certain, but his private conversation with her also opens up a greater mystery. Is Jeanne a curse bearer? Additionally, Vanitas’ request to be called by name, while masked by being manipulative, likely stems from his overall resentment towards how he was treated in the past by the Vampire of the Blue Moon and his feelings towards vampires. He has an identity beyond just “human.” Also, as large of a jerk he can be, it is difficult not to be intrigued and saddened by his conversation with Noé about love and his attraction to Jeanne.

The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 7 is a fun episode for anyone who loves to ship characters. Additionally, it is sparkly, pretty to look at, and full of tender moments that lighten the mood after a rather serious arc.

The Case Study of Vanitas  is streaming now on Funimation, with new episodes premiering Fridays.
