The celebrations of Eid ul Azhar are initiated when people say takbeer loud to sacrifice the animal.  All the men women and children seem happy in their finest clothes and they congratulate each other.  The basic purpose of this Eid is to share the meat with other Muslims who cannot afford the sacrifice of an animal in the name of God.  Eid al-Adha is is a symbol of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his only son in the name of Allah.

This means that we should love Allah and should be willing to sacrifice our most beloved thing in the name of Allah with a positive gesture.  The meat of an animal that is to be sacrificed is divided into three basic parts.  One part of the meat is kept for the family members while the second part is shared among friends and relatives and the third part is for the poor and needy people.

This Eid marks the end of Hajj which is a five-day religious journey to the Grand Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.  Haj is an important pillar of Islam and we witness that millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage every year and do their Hajj.  There is a strong connection between Eid al Adha and Hajj because Hajj is completed on this Eid and Muslims around the world complete their Holy ritual along with the sacrifice of an animal.

Eid Ul Adha is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all around the world. Eid ul-Azha in Pakistan – Sacrifice and Charity

1. What is Eid ul-Azha?

Eid ul-Azha, often called “The Feast of the Sacrifice” in English, is one of the most important Muslim holidays worldwide. 

It originates from the story of Ibrahim , who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismael . According to the Quran, Ibrahim had asked Allah to give him a son, and Allah did so. But as Ismael grew older, Ibrahim began having recurring dreams of slaughtering his son and realized it was an order from Allah to sacrifice his son. Upon Ibrahim telling his son this, Ismael told his father to do as Allah willed. Ibrahim prepared his son for the sacrifice, was about to slaughter him, but was stopped by a voice. This voice told him that the “vision” had already been completed. Ibrahim was given a lamb to sacrifice in Ismael’s place, and Ismael was revealed to be a righteous prophet.  

Today, Muslims celebrate this holiday as a time of ایثار ( eesaar ), or “selflessness,” and as a reminder that Allah blesses the faithful. Eid ul-Azha is also associated with the willingness to give up one’s cherished possessions to glorify Allah.

2. The Eid ul-Azha Date in Pakistan

The date of Eid ul-Azha varies each year on the Gregorian calendar, as it takes place on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah. The holiday then lasts for roughly three days. 

Here’s a list of this holiday’s tentative start date for the next ten years.

Note that these dates may not be entirely accurate, and may vary. The date of Eid ul-Azha is officially determined each year by professional moon-sighters, and the dates above are only expected estimates.

3. Eid ul-Azha Traditions and Celebrations

In Pakistan, Eid holidays are celebrated in a number of ways. Here are the most prominent traditions and celebrations for the Greater Eid, Eid ul-Azha. 

1 – The Sacrifice

The most important tradition is that of sacrificing an animal, usually a بھیڑ ( bhairh ), meaning “sheep,” or بکری ( bakri ), meaning “goat.” Once the animal has been slaughtered, its meat is divided into three portions:

1. A portion to غریبوں میں تقسیم کرنا ( ghareebon main taqseem karna ), or “share with the poor”

2. A portion to take home to one’s family

3. A portion to share with friends or relatives

An interesting aspect of this قربانی ( qurbani ), or “sacrifice,” is that it’s not done to atone for one’s sins. According to Muslim beliefs, the blood and meat of the sacrifice don’t even reach Allah, except in the form of pleasing Him through one’s devotion. Instead, the sacrifice has more to do with selflessness and sharing. 

2 – Eating on Holy Eid ul-Azha

Due to the nature of this sacrifice, people are expected to prepare and enjoy the meat they receive ! 

In Pakistan, Eid ul-Azha is the perfect occasion to have a باربیکیو ( barbecue ), or “barbecue,” and indulge in a variety of tasty treats. Popular items you’ll come across include kebabs, curries, meatballs, and several traditional Pakistani dishes. Of course, all menu items will conform to halal standards, and you can also find non-meat products (like the delectable ma’amoul shortbread cookies!). 

Expect for meat dishes to be heavily spiced with things like cinnamon, curry, and cardamom.

3 – Eid Prayers 

In Pakistan, Eid prayers are given as Muslims gather in large groups throughout the country. They tend to gather in large, open spaces as well as in mosques to pray together. The largest Eid gathering in Pakistan usually takes place in the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad , and it’s not uncommon for public officials to host their own gatherings as well.

7) لوگ ایک دوسرے سے گلے ملتے ہیں اور انہیں 'عید مبارک' کہہ کر مبارکباد دیتے ہیں۔

8) عید الضحیٰ کے موقع پر لوگ جانور کی قربانی کرتے ہیں اور گوشت غریبوں میں تقسیم کیا جاتا ہے۔

9) عید الضحیٰ ہمیں الله کی راہ میں قربانی کا درس دیتی ہے۔

10) اس دن ہر طرف خوشی اور مسرت کا ماحول ہوتا ہے۔

عید کے معنی خوشی کے ہیں۔یہ خوشی کا تہوار ہے جو مسلمان مناتے ہیں۔عیدیں سال میں دو ہیں، عید الفطر اور عید الضحیٰ۔

وہ عید ہے جو رمضان کے روزوں کے خاتمے پر منائی جاتی ہے۔فطر کے معنی ہیں کھولنا۔اس لئے جب ماہ رمضان کے تیس روزے ختم ہو جاتے ہیں تو ماہ شوال کی پہلی تاریخ کو روزے کھول دیے جاتے ہیں اور عید منائی جاتی ہے۔اس عید پر اہل اسلام اس بات کے لیے اللہ پاک کا شکر ادا کرتے ہیں کہ ان کے روزے بخریت انجام پائے اور انہوں نے عبادت کرکے خدا تعالیٰ کی رضامندی حاصل کی۔رمضان کے آخری دن شام کو ہلالِ عید دکھائی دیتا ہے تو اس کا اعلان نقاروں کو بجا کر کیا جاتا ہے۔اور لوگ خوشی سے پھولے نہیں سماتے ایک دوسرے کو عید مبارک کہتے ہیں۔اگلی صبح عمدہ کھانے خاص طور پر سویاں تیار کی جاتی ہیں۔اس دن ہر کمانے والا بالغ مسلمان اپنی اور اپنے اہل و عیال کی طرف سے صدقہ فطر غریبوں اور محتاجوں کو دیتا ہے۔

روزہ رکھنے سے مسلمان پر یہ بخوبی ظاہر ہوجاتا ہے کہ فاقہ کش کی حالت کیا ہوتی ہے۔اسی لیے وہ عید الفطر پر مسکینوں اور ناداروں میں حسب توفیق نقد و جنس خیرات کے طور پر تقسیم کرتا ہے اور خدا تعالیٰ کا شکر بجا لاتا ہے کہ یارب تو نے مجھے مفلسی اور فاقہ کشی سے بچایا۔میں تیرا صدق دل سے شکرگزار ہوں۔ روزہ سے روزہ دار کا دل اور جسم دونوں پاک ہو جاتے ہیں۔

عید کے دن مسلمان صاف ستھرے کپڑے پہنتے ہیں اور عید گاہ یا جامع مسجد میں جاکر نماز عید پڑھتے ہیں۔اس کے بعد وہ اپنے رشتہ داروں، دوستوں اور عزیزوں کی ملاقات کو جاتے ہیں۔خوشی سے ایک دوسرے کے گلے ملتے ہیں، دعوتیں کرتے ہیں،اور صدقہ و خیرات دیتے ہیں۔غریبوں محتاجوں کو کھانا کھلاتے ہیں،احباب کو تحفے بھی پیش کیے جاتے ہیں کئی جگہ میلے بھی لگتے ہیں اور خوب رونق ہوتی ہے۔

دوسری عید جس کا نام عید الاضحٰی  ہے ماہ ذی الحج کی دسویں تاریخ کو منائ جاتی ہے۔یہ عیدالفطر کے دو ماہ اور دس دن بعد آتی ہے۔اس سے ایک دن پہلے تمام دنیا کے صاحب توفیق لاکھوں مسلمان مکہ معظمہ میں حج کا فریضہ ادا کرتے ہیں اور وہیں عید کا دن بھی مناتے ہیں۔اس عید کے دن مسلمان بھیڑ، بکری یا اونٹ وغیرہ کی قربانی کرتے ہیں۔اسی لیے اس عید کو عید قرباں، یا بقرعید، یا عیدالاضحیٰ کہتے ہیں۔”اضحیٰ” کے معنی ہیں قربانی۔در حقیقت یہ عید حضرت ابراہیم علیہ سلام کی قربانی کی یاد میں منائی جاتی ہے۔

کہتے ہیں کہ ایک رات حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام نے خواب میں دیکھا کہ میں خدا کے حکم سے اپنے بیٹے اسماعیل علیہ السلام کو قربان کر رہا ہوں۔صبح ہوئی تو انہوں نے یہ خواب اپنے بیٹے سے بیان کیا۔ بیٹے نے عرض کی”آپ کا خواب سچا ہے آپ خدا تعالیٰ کا حکم بجا لائیں اور مجھے قربان کردیں تاکہ خداوند تعالی کی رضا حاصل ہو” اس پر حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام نے اپنے بیٹے اسماعیل علیہ السلام کو منہ کے بل لٹایا اور ذبح کرنے پر آمادہ ہوئے۔دو بار ذبح کرنے میں ناکام ہوئے تیسری بار جب بیٹے کی گردن پر وار کرنے والے ہی تھے تو غیب سے آواز آئی”اے ابراہیم یہ تو محض تیرا امتحان تھا اور تو اس امتحان میں پورا اترا ہے اس لیے اپنے بیٹے کو ذبح نہ کر”عین اسی وقت ایک دنبہ عالم غائب سے نمودار ہوا اور حضرت ابراہیم علیہ سلام نے اسے قربان کیا۔اسی قربانی کی یاد میں اہل اسلام قربانی کرتے ہیں اور خوشی مناتے ہیں اور ہر سال حضرت ابراہیم علیہ سلام کی قربانی کی یاد کو تازہ کرتے ہیں۔
