Shadowlands Patch 9.1 – How to Upgrade Korthian Gear
You can upgrade the new Korthian catch-up gear in Shadowlands Patch 9.1 to match loot dropped from the Normal difficulty of the new Sanctum of Domination raid. It’s not only an alluring way to gear up both your main and alts, but provides a way for solo players who prefer the open-world to gear up. You’ll have to do some farming for the Archivist’s Codex, a new faction within the added Maw zone of Korthia, but not before clearing an attached minor quest-chain that unlocks them first.
Upgrade Korthian gear in Shadowlands by spending Cataloged Research at the Archivist’s Codex Upgrade Vendor.
Korthian gear in Shadowlands Patch 9.1 can be upgraded from item level 200 up to item level 233 at upgrade tier 6. This is on par with gear that drops off the last two bosses in the Sanctum of Domination raid on Normal difficulty. Thing is, you need to complete a minor quest-chain to unlock the ability to upgrade your Korthian gear in the first place.
Korthian gear can be found out in Korthia, or purchased via a token from the Death’s Advance quartermaster. You can read all about earning Korthian catch-up gear in our article here , but to summarize: you’ll start earning Korthian gear long before you can upgrade it. While unlocking Korthia will set you on your path to acquiring the gear, you need to unlock the Archivist’s Codex faction to actually upgrade your Korthian gear in Shadowlands.
To unlock the Archivist’s Codex you need to loot a Researching Korthian Relics quest-item from either Rare creatures or treasures scattered about Korthia. You do not need to unlock Korthia to loot this item . In short, you can skip straight to knocking out the Archivist’s Codex quest-chain the moment you step foot in Korthia. You’ll want to follow this quest-chain all the way through to “Establishing the Archive,” which will unlock a couple of tutorial quests that deal with upgrading your Korthian gear.
First and foremost, you need to find Korthian relics and Relic Fragments that can then be redeemed at the Archivist’s Codex vendor Roh-Suir for Catalogued Research . This currency is what you’ll use to upgrade your Korthian gear in Shadowlands, though do note it is also used to purchase items from the Archivist’s Codex vendor. These Korthian relics and fragments drop from treasures, Rare creatures, and can be gained as quest rewards.
Once you have enough Catalogued Research you can speak with the Upgrade Vendor near the Archivist’s Codex vendor to upgrade your Korthian gear. Fun fact: you can technically speak to any upgrade NPC, such as the one in your Covenant, but this Upgrade NPC is literally next to the guy you grab your Catalogued Research from, so it’s more efficient to use him. Simply drag the piece you want to upgrade into the upgrade window to select an upgrade tier, and to see the boost to stats and the total cost.
Keep in mind you can only upgrade Korthian gear to tier 4 before running into a wall. To upgrade your gear to tiers 5 and 6 you’ll need to buy Research Report: Adaptive Alloys and Research Report: First Alloys respectively. These are purchased from Roh-Suir for 4000 and 8000 Catalogued Research, and you need to be “Research Rank 6” (Exalted) with the Archivist’s Codex. Additionally, you need to reach Renown Rank 61 to grab Adaptive Alloys, and Renown Rank 75 to buy First Alloys.
To conclude this guide, here’s how much Catalogued Research each rank will cost, alongside the item level of each:
- 250 Cataloged Research
- 500 Cataloged Research
- 750 Cataloged Research
- 1000 Cataloged Research
World of Warcraft : Shadowlands Patch 9.1, Chains of Domination launches June 29th (NA) and June 30th (EU).

Yea, the speed in which ppl can farm the rep has nearly been tripled, without even taking into account that you can constantly farm until your eyes bleed (Malbog is going to be big)
I really wish you wouldn't have to still do a goddamn 13-quest chain to unlock the thing before you can clear your bag of the ten million relic items clogging up your bags.

Research Report:Adaptive Alloys - not account wide?
Am I wrong in thinking this was supposed to be account wide? (It is not currently)
What is the point in it if it is not? My main does not need 226 items, my alts do!
(for those that donât know it is an item purchasable at tier 6 and renown 61 in Korthia that allows the Korthia items to be upgraded to 226)
No, Sadly it is NOT accountwide.
I doubt many of us would disagree with you.
So itâs DoA as an item to the majority of players
I donât see the point of the item at all. If someone got their character to Tier 6, itâs quite likely they donât need the upgrades⊠it would be our alts that need it most.
Sadly Blizzard does not seem to agree.
Same got my main to 61 this morning and went and got the item. Switched to an alt and ânothingâ. My fault for thinking that âAN ALT FRIENDLYâ expansion would be thatâŠ
It is not as if it is âfree lootâ It will still take a while on an alt to farm enough Research to get the items to 226 (220 to 226 is 2K a time)
Iâm doing the Legion Order Hall campaign on my Priest just now. Hit the part where you need to do a (tough) Mission Table adventure. My followers arenât leveled or geared but I remembered tehre were Nethershard items for doing this. Went and bought them on my main. The 880 powerlevel item is account wide. The chest of follwer equipment and the tome of xp arenât. I set off the mission at 80% so fingers crossed but WTF is one catch up item account wide and the other two not? It makes no sense logicallyâŠ
Korthia gear is for people who do world content as their main means of progression. Itâs pathetic, yes. Couldâve been useful as catchup gear, but⊠itâs not, because of arbitrary restrictions.
Given that only 10% of the playerbase raids and a bit more does m+, I would say for the majority it is useful.
I donât believe that for a second (I know certain YTs have âprovedâ it.) Just inspecting people in Kothia this morning almost all were over 225 in fact many were way over that.
The people that are playing are doing content, otherwise how can they be over 225?
My point is those that have done Kothia and are now Tier 6 are in the majority way over 226 and this item is useless.
Of course there are other players who do not clear the area every day, the item is useless to them as well, they cannot access it.

Report summary
The past two months have seen numerous key developments in bulk alloy markets, impacting our short-term outlook to varying degrees. The announcement that South32âs GEMCO manganese ore mine will likely remain out of production until early 2025 has spiked prices for both manganese ore and alloys. Meanwhile, a major anti-dumping case in the US, the nationalisation of a major Russian supplier, and continued rampant oversupply in the Chinese solar supply chain are affecting the ferrosilicon and silicon metal markets significantly. In the chromium market, ore producers continue to enjoy very high prices whilst ferrochrome prices remain unprofitably low in comparison. For how long can that situation be sustained? Read our report to learn more about these developments, our forecast, and the latest movements in the market.

Why Research Report: Adaptive Alloys a tier 6 vendor?
to upgrade gear to rank 5 u need to grind to tier 6âŠwhat are ya smoking??? lets be honest here. the gear mainly design for casual players which most arenât grinding that rep everyday to the max . farming is a thing from the past, no casual player got time for that(casual are pretty much what player base you have left beside the Grind hard players which are a fewer) rank 5 should be tier 5 and tier 6 well tier 6⊠Itâs not even a account wide progress⊠ya better get this thing fix asap.
to those who just farm it none stop and hit rank 6 asap good for you. Iâm mainly speaking for those who play casually and have other stuff to do. rant over p.s. a turtle made it to the water
Wouldnât hold my breath.
- A) Players have been tier 6 for weeks now, and Blizzard hasnât bothered changing this.
- B) If casuals as you describe really play so little they wonât reach tier 6 for a long time, they probably donât do the other content that would make 226/233 obselete, so whatâs really the rush?
You donât really want to know what they smoke at Blizzard.
still should be fixed its stupid that you have to get to tier6 so you can have tier 5 upgrades unlocked. because if you have that you will also have the tier6 one unlocked.
It really should be fixed. I just reached the new tier thinking Iâd be able to buy the item to upgrade and find that I need tier 6 but theres also an item for tier 6 upgrade for tier 6. That makes no sense, why is it not 5?
BlizzâŠtear down that wall!
Seriously, was so odd that the tier 5 i-level wasnât unlocked at the tier 5 rep level (& 61 Renown). I just noticed tier 6 also has a Renown 75 requirement, seems about right for the rep slog.
/agree this is stupid. i need to reach lv 6 to upgrade a piece of gear to lv 5???
when i was at lv 4 i could upgrade to lv 4; same with lv 3, lv 2, lv 1. but someone decided, hey, letâs do something crazy, lets make them gain 2 lvs to upgrade gear 1 lv.
Destiny 2 gets more enjoyable every lame programming âbugâ found.
This game hands renown out like candy as a catch up mechanism. A few weeks after returning Iâm already Renown 72 (I was renown 40 something if I recall). I will get renown 75 before I get research level 6. This thread warrants a bump just to give credit to the single glorious brain cell of whatever designer orchestrated this dumb system.

Discovering Alloys with Exceptional Fracture Resistance
May 7, 2024 By Michelle Revels

- Mechanical Engineering
A medium-entropy refractory alloy generally has favorable mechanical properties, making it applicable in fields such as aerospace, defense, energy conversion and manufacturing. However, almost all high- and medium-entropy alloys decrease in strength and ductility at extremely high or extremely low temperatures, limiting their usage.
Alongside a team of researchers from across the nation, Dr. Enrique J. Lavernia, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the J. Mike Walker ‘66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has discovered a refractory alloy that contradicts this trend by exhibiting an unprecedented fracture toughness at very low temperatures due to its ability to form kink bands.
The findings, published in Science , showcase that this novel class of materials can show resistance to fracture in a wider range of temperatures, broadening their real-life applications
To conduct this study, the researchers used a multidisciplinary approach that involves synthesis and experiments to determine mechanical properties and detailed characterization using electron microscopy techniques to study these novel materials and their deformation behaviors.
The study investigated the mechanical properties of a refractory medium-entropy alloy made of niobium, molybdenum, tantalum and hafnium (NbTaTiHf).
To test the new alloy’s response to extreme environments, the researchers exposed the alloy to a wide range of temperatures, from 77 to 1473 Kelvin — the equivalent of - 321.07 Fahrenheit to 2191.73 Fahrenheit.
The findings showed that the alloy could retain strength and fracture toughness at these temperatures because of its ability to form kink bands. Kinks bands are deviations of a dislocation effect within a crystal structure that contain a change in the positioning of atoms. These dislocations allow atoms to slide over each other at low-stress levels on a glide plane.
The toughness of the discovered alloy is attributed to these dislocations, which promote strain hardening to form the kink bands, dispersing damage away from crack tips.
“Contrary to a generally accepted concept, body-centered cubic refractory alloys can possess extraordinary fracture toughness across cryogenic and high temperatures that arise from the coordinated glide of edge dislocations at a crack tip, which results in complex arrays of kink bands,” said Lavernia.
This discovery of this potentially new mechanism could lead to increased applications for refractory alloys.
This research is a collaborative effort between Drs. David H. Cook, Madelyn I. Payne, Pedro Borges, Wenqing Wang, Flynn Walsh, Mark Asta, Robert O. Ritchie and Punit Kumar from the University of California, Berkeley and the Materials Sciences Division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Dr. Andrew M. Minor from the University of California, Berkeley, the Lawrence Berkley National Lab, and the National Center for Electron Microscopy; Drs. Calvin H. Belcher and Diran Apelian from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Irvine; Drs. Zehao Li and Arun Devaraj from the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; and Dr. Mingwei Zhang from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the National Center for Electron Microscopy.

Research Report: Adaptive Alloys still account wide? This game's systems man đđđ. I just unlocked Tier 6 Archivist Codex / Renown 61 on my paladin, and am able to upgrade the Korthia gear to 226. I swap over to my priest (who is not Tier 6, but is Renown 61) to upgrade, and it cannot be done.
My main does not need 226 items, my alts do! (for those that don't know it is an item purchasable at tier 6 and renown 61 in Korthia that allows the Korthia items to be upgraded to 226) 4 Likes.
