These laws tell us exactly how things move or stay still, for example, why you don't float out of bed or fall on the floor of your house. Newton's laws control how cars work, how water flows, how buildings don't fall and, basically, how everything around us moves. According to Newton's first law of motion, a ball that rolls on the ground tends to maintain its state of motion to infinity, if no external force acts on it; however, the frictional force that acts on the ball from the outside helps stop the movement of the ball and stops it. After understanding Newton's law, there are some phenomena around us that implement Newton's three laws of motion.

Newton established the law of universal gravitation based on experimental observations made earlier by Galileo, who noticed that bodies of different masses fall close to the Earth's surface at the same time (that is, Earth's gravity attracts all masses with the same acceleration). The principle of inertia is one of the basic principles of classical physics that is still used today to describe the movement of things and how it is affected by the forces applied to them. This law also means that when two equal forces act on two different bodies, the object with greater mass will have less acceleration and a slower movement, and the object with less mass will have greater acceleration. This is known as Hooke's Law of Elasticity, which indicates that the quantity with which an object changes is linearly related to the force that causes this change.

A similar demonstration of the inertia of movement can be observed when a bowler makes a short run before throwing a ball. When the carpet moves backwards, dust particles get carried away by the air or fall to the floor due to gravity, demonstrating the law of inertia. Newton's law of motion is so popular in the world of Physics that it is named after its inventor, an English scientist named Sir Isaac Newton. The free fall experiment is one of the most important applications of three scientific experiments in physics.

The laws of motion were discovered in 1687 by an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian and author, Sir Issac Newton. Essentially, without an external force being applied or interfering with it, an object will remain at rest or moving at the same speed and in the same direction. This is because Newton's inertia of motion or first law of motion resists the sudden termination of motion and forces the body to maintain its state of motion. Newton demonstrated that these laws, in addition to the law of universal gravitation, can explain Kepler's laws of planetary motion, and these laws are still among the most important physical laws so far.

Unlike Newton's first law, Newton's second law is correlated with the state of an object in motion.

In Aristotelian mechanics and in ordinary experience, objects that are not being pushed tend to come to rest. The law of inertia was deduced by Galileo from his experiments with balls rolling down inclined planes.

For Galileo, the principle of inertia was fundamental to his central scientific task: he had to explain how is it possible that if Earth is really spinning on its axis and orbiting the Sun, we do not sense that motion. The principle of inertia helps to provide the answer: since we are in motion together with Earth and our natural tendency is to retain that motion, Earth appears to us to be at rest. Thus, the principle of inertia, far from being a statement of the obvious, was once a central issue of scientific contention . By the time Newton had sorted out all the details, it was possible to accurately account for the small deviations from this picture caused by the fact that the motion of Earth’s surface is not uniform motion in a straight line (the effects of rotational motion are discussed below). In the Newtonian formulation, the common observation that bodies that are not pushed tend to come to rest is attributed to the fact that they have unbalanced forces acting on them, such as friction and air resistance.

Newton’s first law of motion states that an object cannot start, stop, or change direction by itself. It needs some external force to cause a change in motion. This property of massive bodies to resist changes in their state of motion is called inertia. Newton’s first law is also known as the law of inertia.

Statement:  A body remains at rest or moves straight line (at a constant velocity) unless acted upon by an external force.

Real-life application:  Shake up that bottle of ketchup! When you shake that bottle, you bring the bottom down, and then suddenly, you stop. It is inertia that causes the ketchup to come out of the bottle. Some more examples of first law of motion include Object Placed on a Plane Surface, object thrown in outer space, jerk when a vehicle starts and brakes applied by a bus driver.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion

The second law of motion discusses what happens to an object when acted upon by an outside force. Newton’s Second law of motion states that the force applied to the body is the same as the product of its mass and acceleration.

Statement:  Newton’s 2nd law of motion states that the acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.

Real-life application –  Your friend weighs less than you, but you both walk, exerting the same amount of force. Your friend will go a good deal faster than you because the acceleration used by them would undoubtedly be higher.

One of the main reasons people constantly try to reduce the mass of objects is to increase their speed and acceleration. All of the factors affect each other. If something has much more mass, then exerting more force will make it move faster.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion

In this Newton’s Third Law of Motion, we discuss the action and reaction with their use in daily life.

Statement:  For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If one body exerts a force on the second body, then the second body exerts an equal force on the first body.

Real-life application –  Hitting the Wall with Your Fist! There are two forces, your force and the other is an equal and opposite force applied by the wall on the fist. Hence, the harder you hit the wall, the more force is exerted on your fist by the wall; this is why you get hurt more. So don’t hit the wall because you will get yourself hurt.

Question 1:  A box of mass 2 kg and a force of 20 N is acting on it in the positive x-direction, and a force of 30 N in the negative x-direction, then find its acceleration?

Answer: To find acceleration, we need to calculate the net force.

Fnet = 20 N – 30 N = -10 N

As we know, F=ma, so to find acceleration, we have to divide the force by mass as per the formula a=F/m

∴ Acceleration=−10N/2kg=−5m/s 2

Question 2: While driving to work, Ram always keeps his purse in the passenger seat. By the time he reaches the office, the purse has fallen in front of the passenger seat. So why did it happen?

Answer: We can explain it in Newton’s first law of motion. The purse, because of inertia, travels forward with a car until acted by an external force. In this case, the force of the car floor is made the purse fall from the seat.

Answer: We calculate the force using the following formula F=ma

Given details are m= 1500 kg & a=5 m/s 2 F=ma, So, F= 1500 * 5 =7500N So the force required is 7500N

Our daily lives contain several instances of Newton’s first law of motion is applied. For instance, when we suddenly use the brakes while riding a vehicle, the vehicle stops because the brakes exert an external force on it. Similar to when we are moving while walking or running, we only stop when an outside force, such as friction with the ground, acts on us.

Most natural phenomena and their various behaviors must be converted into important mathematical equations and formulas that serve human needs and predict these phenomena. Thus, it is concluded that mathematics and physics can never be separated.

Physics is divided into a huge number of branches, each of which specializes in a specific field. Perhaps the most prominent branches of physics are; Atomic and nuclear physics, acoustics, optics, astrophysics, geophysics, thermodynamics, and many other branches.

A large number of scientists have contributed to this enormous field of knowledge throughout humanity, which has brought physics to such a high level that it is at the present time.

Physics is of great importance in life and this is what we will learn about in the following points:

Science and technology play an important role in our daily life. Physics plays a decisive role in modern culture and is part of human history. Its development has contributed to the progress of many other human activities, from medicine to space travel, from economics to telecommunications, etc.

Physics deals with the things like matter, force, energy and motion. All these are related to our daily tasks. Physics defines how everything around us works. We cannot separate ourselves from the wonders of physics.

Physics influences our conception of the world and of man; It is the basis of all the devices we use; allows us to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of our activities.

Physics helps us analyze, evaluate, and distinguish solutions to different problems. Physics isn't just in labs, it's everywhere we look.

Physics allows us to better understand natural phenomena and relate them to our daily activities. In this way, we can explain how and why things happen in addition to experimenting and confirming the results. Where is the Earth's Center of Gravity Located?

We can walk easily only because of physics. When we put our foot on the ground, we apply a force to it. In doing this, the ground also applies an equal force to our foot, but in the opposite direction, and propels us forward. This is what we call Newton's third law.

When we want to open and close hinged doors, we use physics. The phenomenon involved in opening and closing doors is called "torque". Torque is the measure of the force required to rotate an object about an axis or fulcrum. The torque is positive when you open the door clockwise and negative if you open it anticlockwise.

We use a steam iron to give our clothes a professionally pressed look and feel from the comfort of our home. A steam iron uses a lot of physics principles to make it work like "Heat" (a form of energy that is transferred from one body to another as a result of a temperature difference).

We use physics in our kitchens to cook delicious foods. In the cooking process, we use a branch of physics called "thermodynamics". Thermodynamics deals with heat and temperature that are necessary for cooking foods.

When we cut fruits and vegetables, we use many principles of physics. In order to cut anything, we have to apply pressure to the knife. The pressure is directly dependent on the force and inversely dependent on the area. Therefore, when we increase the pressure on the knife, we can cut any object easily.

We use car seat belts to prevent us from sliding inside the car in the event of a collision. Our car seat belt works on the concept of physics called "inertia". In an accident, a fast-running car suddenly stops. So, the momentum of the car drops to zero in a very short time. The seat belt helps prevent the body from moving in the forward direction. As our body resists stopping due to inertia.

Sound is something we cannot see but hear or experience. Physics here works on the concept of quantum mechanics and studies the origin, propagation and properties of sound. Sound is vital for interacting with others, sharing information, creating art, and countless other aspects of life.

We use headphones/earphones to listen to music and sound. Our headphones/earphones work on the concept of physics called magnetism and sound waves. Headphones/earphones consist of two transducers that receive electrical impulses from an audio receiver, converting the impulses into radio waves. And then they convert radio waves into sound energy that our ears perceive.

We entertain ourselves by clicking our photos. The Lens used in our cameras works on the principle of physics called Optics, which studies the behavior and properties of light. The camera's digital sensor prepares to organize data coming from the light and the camera uses a set of convex lenses to take real inverted images on the film.

Physics is the science that is concerned with the study of nature, which consists of matter and energy, and accordingly, we can say that physics is concerned with defining the basic quantities in the universe (such as velocity, acceleration, charge, momentum, ...).

For example, while previously humans were trying to answer some specific physics questions (such as Maxwell, Faraday,...) these and other scientists came up with what may be the greatest thing in our lives today; Which is electricity, generating it, and benefiting from it, and they reached it specifically when they were trying to answer a set of questions related to the study of light, electric and magnetic fields, and in more scientific words; Electromagnetic theory.

One of us may want to learn physics for several reasons; Such as a job, fame, money, desire for knowledge, love of science, or any other reason, and since the article aims to introduce the importance of physics, it is necessary to mention the way to learn physics.

Learning physics may seem complicated, but it is actually much simpler than we imagine since physics is in essence a search for answers that have plagued the human mind throughout the ages.

Physics aims first and foremost to understand the universe and its strange phenomena. The human mind picks up by observation the initial questions that his thinking later refines into mature questions that lead the world in its search for truth, ending with the amazing discovery of the answer to the question or perhaps other answers, or perhaps other new questions in most cases.

To learn physics, you must first realize that it takes a lot of effort to be able to understand physics, in addition to your need to learn many different things in the fields of natural sciences, computers, engineering, and others, so that you can understand physical theories and learn about their existing applications.

In order to fully understand physics, it is necessary to attend a university program in the field of physics. Hi Lexy, Newton's law are very important because they tie into almost everything we see in everyday life. These laws tell us exactly how things move or sit still, like why you don't float out of bed or fall through the floor of your house. Newton's laws control how cars work, how water flows, how buildings don't fall down, and basically how everything around us moves. It isn't always obvious how important these laws are, because to use them in complicated situations like getting ready for school, you need to know a lot of things, like the exact shape of your tube of toothpaste, how you squeeze on it, and what the toothpaste is made of. Newton's laws speak very generally all forces, but to use them for any specific problem, you have to actually know all the forces involved, like gravity, friction, and tension. I'll give you a simple example from everyday life, which I chose because it doesn't have too many distracting details. For a car to move, there must be friction between the wheels and the ground. The wheels exert a force on the ground because they are spinning, and the ground exerts a reaction force on the wheels. It is this force which pushes the car forward. So thank Newton's law of action and reaction every time you drive somewhere! If you decide to study physics in college, you'll definitely learn how to apply these laws to understand real-life problems! In high school classes, you usually do simpler examples like how a ball flies through the air. But even that is pretty important, if you like to play baseball! Luckily, humans naturally are good at understanding how things move, so you probably won't have to do any math problems to catch a baseball. If you want to land a spaceship on the moon, though, you'll have to study a lot harder! :) David Schmid

  Newton’s First Law of Motion

It says that 

“An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by a net external force”

Explanation of Newton’s First Law

This means that motion cannot change or decrease without the effect of an unbalanced force. If nothing happens to you, you will never go anywhere. If you’re going in a certain direction, unless something happens to you, you’ll always go that way forever.

  That is, if the resultant force (the vector sum of the forces acting on the body) is zero, then the velocity of the object is constant. When we say that the velocity of an object is constant, we mean that both magnitude and direction are constant.

Now we’ll show you a good example for illustration, when you see a video of astronauts. Have you ever noticed that their tools are floating? They can only place them in space and stay in one place. As there is no force to intervene to change this situation.

The same applies when they throw objects at the camera; these objects move in a straight line. Meaning, if they drop an object while in space, that object will continue to move in the same direction and at the same speed unless interfered with.

The term inertia may be referred to as “the amount of resistance of an object to a change in velocity” or “resistance to change in motion.” This includes changes in the speed of the object or the direction of motion. How to Investigate the Relationship Between Mass and Inertia?

The relationship between mass and inertia is very important to understand the behavior of objects in motion. Here’s a summary of the relationship between mass and inertia:

All objects resist changes in their state of motion; this tendency is known as inertia.  But do some objects exhibit a greater  tendency to resist changes than others? Absolutely yes! The tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion varies with mass (Remember: Mass is the quantity that is solely dependent upon the inertia of an object).

The greater the inertia an object has, the more mass it possesses.  A more massive object has a greater tendency to resist changes in its state of motion.

Suppose that there are two seemingly identical bricks at rest on the physics lecture table. Yet one brick consists of mortar and the other brick consists of Styrofoam. Without lifting the bricks, how could you tell which brick was the Styrofoam brick ? You could give the bricks an identical push in an effort to change their state of motion. The brick that offers the least resistance is the brick with the least inertia – and therefore the brick with the least mass (i.e., the Styrofoam brick ).

A common physics demonstration relies on the principle that the more massive an object is, the more it  resists changes in its state of motion.

The demonstration goes as follows: several massive books are placed upon a teacher’s head. A wooden board is placed on top of the books and a hammer is used to drive a nail into the board. Due to the large mass of the books, the force of the hammer is sufficiently resisted (inertia). This is demonstrated by the fact that the teacher does not feel the hammer blow. (Of course, this story may explain many of the observations that you previously made concerning your “weird physics teacher.”) A common variation of this demonstration involves breaking a brick over the teacher’s hand using the swift blow of a hammer. The massive bricks resist the force and the hand is not hurt. 

Newton explained that the mass of an object is a measurement of its inertia. In other words, objects with different masses, moving at the same speed, will have different inertial properties, with the one having greater mass exhibiting greater inertia.

In summary, the relationship between mass and inertia is such that the mass of an object directly influences its inertia. Heavier objects have more inertia than lighter objects, and mass serves as a measure of an object’s resistance to changes in its state of motion.

  • The electric fan continues to move for a period after the electricity is turned off.
  • When the bus stops suddenly, people fall forward.
  •   If an index card is placed on top of a glass with a penny on top of it, the index card can be quickly removed while the penny falls straight into the glass, as the penny is demonstrating inertia.

  •    If a ball is on a slanted surface and you let go, gravity will make it roll down the slope. It has inertia, and if there is a level area at the bottom of the slope, it will continue moving.
  •    If you are on a train and the train is moving at a constant speed, a toy tossed into the air will go straight up and then come down. This is because the toy has inertia like the train and you.
  • If you jump from a car or bus that is moving, your body is still moving in the direction of the vehicle. When your feet hit the ground, the grounds act on your feet and they stop moving. You will fall because the upper part of your body didn’t stop, and you will fall in the direction you were moving.

How Is Newton’s First Law Used in Everyday Life?

To understand how this is done, we will give two examples:

1) A Parachutist Who Jumps from an Aeroplane

 A Parachutist Who Jumps from an Aeroplane

Consider a parachutist who jumps from an aeroplane that is travelling horizontally. The initial vertical speed of the parachutist is zero. However, he will immediately be acted upon by his weight acting vertically downwards and since the external resultant force is not zero he will accelerate downwards. As the parachutist’s speed increases so does the air resistance. This opposes the downwards force of his weight and means that he will not increase in speed indefinitely.

Eventually the air resistance will increase until it equals his weight. At this point the resultant force on the parachutist will be zero and he will stop accelerating; instead he will continue to fall at a constant or terminal velocity. When the parachutist pulls the rip-cord and the parachute is opened, the air resistance is suddenly increased such that it is greater than his weight.

The resultant force is upwards meaning that the parachutist will start to decelerate. This will continue with the air resistance reducing until the forces are again equal and the speed of fall is constant. At this point the terminal velocity should be only a few m s−1.

For a car parked at rest on a hill, the three forces (friction, weight, and normal reaction force) have zero resultant force. Friction balances the component of weight down a slope. If the vehicle moves with constant velocity, the driving force and resistive forces (air resistance and friction) must be equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.

1- Car Air Bags

 The function of the air bag is to inflate in an accident and prevent the driver’s head from hitting the windshield. When a car with an airbag is exposed to an accident, the sudden slowdown in its speed leads to the operation of an electrical switch, and this starts a chemical reaction that produces a gaseous substance that works to fill the air bag and protect the driver’s head.

2-  Baseball Is at Rest

It needs external force to move, gets thrown, or is hit. The distance the ball travels depends on the amount of force that acts on it.

3-The motion of a ball falling through the atmosphere or a model rocket launched into the atmosphere.

4- The Liftoff of a Rocket from the Launch Pad.

 Just prior to engine ignition, the velocity of the rocket is zero and the rocket is at rest. If the rocket is sitting on its fins, the weight of the rocket is balanced by the reaction of the earth to the weight. There is no net force on the object, and the rocket would remain at rest indefinitely.

When the engine is ignited, the thrust of the engine creates an additional force opposed to the weight. When the thrust is greater than the weight, there is a net external force equal to the thrust minus the weight, and the rocket begins to rise. The velocity of the rocket increases from zero to some positive value under the acceleration produced by the net external force.

5- A Kite Flying through the Air

 The forces acting on a kite in flight include the weight, the aerodynamic lift and drag , and the tension in the control line. In stable flight, these forces are all balanced and the kite holds a fixed altitude.
