Aidan Deshong captures our hearts with a lively yet accessible Friday puzzle.

A competitive bike rider performing a flip. He is upside down, midair, with a blue sky and clouds in the background.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Tricky Clues

FRIDAY PUZZLE — When Will Shortz became crossword editor at The New York Times in 1993, he vowed to freshen up what had been largely seen by the public as a stodgy, über-intellectual endeavor. To do that, he encouraged younger constructors to submit puzzles with contemporary entries and clues. In fact, he has published the work of more teenage constructors than the three puzzle editors before him did — 63 out of the 70 whose puzzles have run since The Times began offering crosswords in 1942.

Make that 64 out of 71, as Aidan Deshong joins that illustrious club: He will graduate a week after his Times debut and will be headed to college in the fall. Congratulations, Mr. Deshong. That’s what I’d call a big month.

Tricky Clues

Those who solve the Crossword regularly know that the puzzles increase in difficulty as the week goes on (more or less), but that difficulty is sometimes about vocabulary rather than wordplay or misdirection. Here are some of the clues and the entries that stood out to me.

1A. A CAPTCHA is a program designed to distinguish between human users and bots. “One might read ‘Select all images with bicycles’” — and clicking on the correct images would allow the user to proceed to a web page, for example.

8A. Some companies GAMIFY, or incorporate fun ways to navigate, their apps or websites in order to make the experience “more fun and addicting, in a way.” Waze, the automobile navigation tool, is the first app I have encountered that does this, or at least used to. When it was introduced to the public, users could win points for reaching certain milestones, and the cars on the screen could be customized.

15A. My first guess for the clue “Babies snap out of them” was “long, drawn-out crying jags,” but that wasn’t correct. Newborns can be taken out of ONESIES by undoing the snaps at the crotch.

17A. The ride service Uber, which supplanted standing on the street to hail taxis, has come to symbolize new companies that “Disrupt with technology, as an existing industry” — so much so that there is now a verb named after it. The answer to the clue is UBERIZE.

37A. Clementines and MANDARIN ORANGES are different in size, but they are “look-alikes,” as the clue says, in the sense that they are both orange citrus fruits.

I will say that MANDARIN ORANGES are particularly useful for making tasty ponzu sauce, the citrusy soy sauce popular in Japanese cuisine. In Japan, ponzu is made with yuzu, a fruit that is not readily available in the United States, but lemon and MANDARIN ORANGES make adequate substitutions. Some people also add grapefruit juice, but — and I know this will be controversial — my general opinion of grapefruit is that it is a waste of space. Your mileage, as always, may vary.

Fill a jar halfway with good soy sauce and a bit of water, then fill it the rest of the way with the zest and the juice of two MANDARIN ORANGES and two lemons. Add a piece of kombu seaweed, if you have it, for more umami. I dissolve a teaspoon or two of sugar in the liquid, but you don’t have to. Cap it and let it infuse out of direct sunlight for 24 to 48 hours. Strain into clean bottles and serve with your next meal of homemade sushi or sashimi. It also brightens chicken or any food that is made better with salt and citrus.

48A. This “Wet blanket?” is not a buzzkill; it’s a blanket of DEW.

10D. A “Fast break” in this puzzle is not a quick break, but a break from fasting. The answer is MEAL.

11D. The “:” is the symbol for an analogy, and the answer is IS TO.

12D. I thought the answer to “Hankering slangily” might be “jonesing,” but FIENDING is also a descriptive synonym.

16D. This was my favorite clue in the puzzle because I didn’t immediately see the connection between the inflammation in “Ones dealing with joint inflammation?” and its answer, STONERS. The “joint inflammation” in the clue does not refer to arthritis, but to lighting up a joint.

32D. A “/” can mean different things in math and coding, but this clue refers to bowling, where the slash indicates a SPARE.

45D. Today I learned that the game of horseshoes is divided into segments called INNINGS. I’m just happy to get the horseshoe somewhere in the vicinity of the peg.

53D. This clue, “Sick,” is a great example of misdirection. It’s not referring to illness; it’s a slangy synonym of the answer, DOPE.

Constructor Notes

Hi! I’m a high school senior graduating on June 7 and turning 18 a few days after, so this is a very exciting time for me all around. I will be at Harvey Mudd next fall — but believe it or not, this is not the first New York Times crossword made by a then-incoming freshman at Harvey Mudd. The first , by Nathan Hasegawa, ran in 2021. I’m just here to continue the tradition. I started with the grid shape and got lucky by finding solid center entries early on. I tried to incorporate as many fresh-but-accessible tech terms as possible — at least one per corner. When the M and the S on the west side of the grid lent themselves to MS PAINT, I knew I had to finish the puzzle. It was actually Christina Iverson of the Crossword editing team who filled the southwest after I just couldn’t take it all the way — thank you, Christina! And thanks to everyone else for solving!

What is Connections?

Connections is a word puzzle game published every day by the NYT, the hosts of the endlessly popular Wordle puzzle. Crafted each day by crossword puzzle-maker Wyna Liu, Connections presents you with a selection of 16 seemingly disparate words, and you have to group them together in four sets of four, where each group of four words has a common theme.

For instance, the words "Hook", "Nana", "Peter", and "Wendy" are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, "Action", "Ballpark", "Go", and "Stick" are all words which commonly come just before the word "Figure".

Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together - but be wary, because a lot of the time there are red herring connections placed in there deliberately to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.

Each of the four groups in each day's Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

That wraps up today's guide on how to solve the NYT Connections word puzzle. If you're looking for help with Wordle, we've also got you covered with our list of past Wordle answers , as well as the Wordle hint and answer for Tuesday 4th June .
