On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a type of learning experience that happens directly in the work environment. It allows learners to gain practical skills while doing the actual job. Think of it like learning to ride a bike. You can read all about it, but until you actually sit on a bike and start pedaling, you won’t really learn how to ride. That’s what OJT is all about.

Challenges of OJT Learning Experience

While OJT has many benefits, it also has some challenges. One challenge is that it can be stressful. You’re learning new things while also trying to do your job. This can feel like trying to juggle too many things at once.

In conclusion, OJT is a valuable way to learn new skills. It allows you to practice what you’re learning, learn at your own pace, and learn from experts. But it can also be stressful and the quality can vary. Just like any learning experience, it has its ups and downs. But if you’re willing to face the challenges and make the most of the opportunities, OJT can be a powerful tool for learning and growth.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

On-the-Job Training (OJT): Bridging Expectations and Reality

learning experience essay ojt

On-the-Job Training (OJT): Bridging Expectations and Reality

On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a crucial aspect of the learning process for many individuals entering the workforce. It provides them with the opportunity to gain practical skills and hands-on experience in their chosen field. However, the actual experience of OJT may not always align with the expectations that both employers and employees have in mind. In this article, we will delve into the concept of OJT, discuss the importance of managing expectations, explore the reality of OJT, and finally, provide strategies to bridge the gap between expectations and reality.

Understanding On-the-Job Training (OJT)

Before we delve deeper into the subject, let’s first establish a clear understanding of the concept of On-the-Job Training (OJT). OJT refers to the process of learning and acquiring new skills and knowledge while actually performing tasks and duties in a real work environment.

OJT is invaluable as it allows individuals to apply theoretical knowledge gained through formal education or training programs into actual practice. It enhances their ability to perform job-related tasks and fosters a deeper understanding of the practical aspects involved.

The Concept and Importance of OJT

OJT plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace . It offers a unique learning experience that cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom setting. By immersing individuals into real work scenarios, it provides them with invaluable exposure to the challenges and demands of the job.

Furthermore, OJT allows individuals to work collaboratively with experienced professionals who serve as mentors, guiding and imparting their knowledge. This mentorship helps to cultivate a sense of camaraderie and instills valuable skills that cannot be learned in theory alone.

Different Types of OJT

OJT can take various forms, each tailored to meet specific learning objectives . Apprenticeships, internships, and formal training programs within an organization all serve as different avenues for OJT. These opportunities enable individuals to gain hands-on experience while receiving guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals in their respective fields.

No matter the form it takes, the ultimate goal of OJT is to enhance an individual’s practical skills and competencies, equipping them with the necessary tools to succeed in their chosen profession.

Setting Expectations for On-the-Job Training

Managing expectations is crucial to ensure a positive and fruitful OJT experience for both employers and employees. Clear communication and understanding from the onset can help align expectations and foster a more productive learning environment.

Role of Employers in Setting Expectations

Employers play a significant role in setting the tone for OJT and establishing clear expectations. It is vital for employers to communicate the goals and objectives of the training program, outlining the skills, knowledge, and behavior they expect trainees to acquire or demonstrate during the training period.

In addition, employers should provide trainees with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, as well as the progression path or potential opportunities within the organization upon successful completion of the training program.

Employee Expectations from OJT

On the flip side, employees should also have a realistic understanding of what they can expect from OJT. They should recognize that the training period may involve challenges and setbacks as they adapt to new responsibilities, environments, and work modes.

By having a growth mindset and understanding that OJT is a learning journey, employees can better adapt and leverage the opportunities presented to them. It is essential for employees to approach OJT with curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the resilience to overcome any obstacles that may arise.

The Reality of On-the-Job Training

While OJT provides an invaluable learning experience, it is not without its challenges. Addressing the reality of OJT helps manage expectations and allows individuals to be better prepared for the road ahead.

Common Challenges in OJT

One of the common challenges faced during OJT is the initial adjustment period. Trainees may feel overwhelmed by new responsibilities, tasks, and expectations. This adjustment period is natural and should be anticipated.

Additionally, there may be instances where trainees encounter difficulties in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. The transition from a controlled learning environment to an actual work environment can present unique challenges that individuals must navigate.

The Gap between Expectations and Reality

Another challenge in OJT is the potential gap between expectations and reality. Trainees may enter the program with certain assumptions or expectations that may not align with the actual work experience. This disparity can lead to frustration and disillusionment if not addressed.

However, it’s essential to view this gap as an opportunity for growth and personal development. Reflecting on the mismatch between expectations and reality can help to identify areas for improvement and bridge the divide to ensure a more fulfilling OJT experience.

Bridging the Gap

While the gap between expectations and reality may exist, there are strategies that can be employed to bridge this divide and maximize the benefits of OJT.

Effective Communication Strategies

Open and honest communication between employers, trainers, and trainees is critical to bridge the gap. Employers should encourage trainees to voice their concerns and provide constructive feedback throughout the training process.

Similarly, trainees should feel empowered to ask questions, seek clarification, and communicate their needs to their trainers. This transparency creates a feedback loop that helps refine the training process and align expectations between all parties involved.

Aligning Training Goals with Business Objectives

It is essential that the objectives of the OJT program align with the overall goals and objectives of the organization. This alignment ensures that the skills and competencies acquired during the training period are directly applicable to the organization’s strategic priorities.

Furthermore, regularly evaluating and reassessing the training goals in light of evolving business needs helps maintain relevance and ensures that OJT remains a valuable investment for both employers and trainees.

Evaluating the Success of OJT

Measuring the success of OJT is crucial in identifying areas for improvement and ensuring continuous growth.

Key Performance Indicators for OJT

Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) is an effective way to measure the success of OJT. These KPIs could include factors such as trainee performance, knowledge retention , and overall satisfaction from both trainees and trainers.

Regularly tracking and evaluating these KPIs provides valuable insights that can lead to targeted interventions and enhancements in the training process, resulting in a more impactful OJT experience.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement in OJT

To further optimize the OJT experience, feedback should be actively encouraged and incorporated into ongoing training initiatives . Trainees should be provided with a platform to share their thoughts, suggestions, and ideas for improvement.

By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, organizations can ensure that the OJT program remains effective, relevant, and aligned with the evolving needs of both trainees and the business.

In conclusion, On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a vital component in bridging the expectations and reality gap for employees entering the workforce. By understanding the concept and importance of OJT, setting clear expectations, and bridging the gap through effective communication and goal alignment, employers and employees can maximize the benefits of OJT. It is important to continuously evaluate the success of OJT through KPIs and embrace feedback for ongoing improvements. These students share what they learned from their on-the-job training experiences, from a few tricks of the trade and bittersweet lessons, to the life principles they can live by.

“I have lots of memorable experiences. One is traveling. In my line of work, I usually travel to different countries for inspiration or ideas for new designs. I attend different kinds of training and meetings with clients and investors.

“I learned to sacrifice a lot of things; I hardly have time for anything else. Even on weekends, I’m in the office.  Start with what you know, and remove the unknown. Simply put, begin at the beginning and then work on how to solve the problems one at a time.”—Karla Motol, 21, Multimedia Arts, Asia Pacific College

Being diplomatic

“I learned through experience how to interact and communicate with people. Knowing how to handle and tackle different issues  and still be diplomatic in both action and words is important. The whole experience of going to another country and facing issues that need to be addressed was quite memorable. Also, I was able to get a glimpse of how the United Nations works when I met new people during the trip.

“It will be so exciting in the ‘real’ world, being independent and figuring things out on your own. This also means having to deal with different people more often, so it is really good to know what you’re doing, and to love it. All we can do as students is to learn whatever  we can in school, be inspired, love the path we take, and finally do our best in everything we do, with a positive outlook in mind.” —Randy Ailemi Valdez, 19, International Studies under the track of International Politics, with a Minor of Peace Studies, Miriam College

My OJT Learning Experience at Development Bank of The Philippines

How did you spend your vacation? Went to the beach with your family? Traveled out of the country or town? Or just stayed at home? Did you do something productive? Did you have fun the whole vacation? ‘Cause if you were going to ask me those questions, I will say yes. I did not spend my vacation in the beach with my family, other country and most of all I am not stay put in our home. I spent my whole vacation at a prominent company located in Subic, Zambales, the company was Development Bank of the Philippines. Why did I spend my vacation here? It’s because I am required to enroll our mid-year class which is an On-the-job training for preparation in working in a real world after school. Let me tell you my whole experience working as an IT Intern at DBP.

What is On the Job Training in the first place? On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is a hands-on method of teaching the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed for employees to perform a specific job within the workplace. Employees learn in the environment where they will need to practice the knowledge and skills obtained during training. For me, this OJT is a great opportunity to expose us in the real world. It is a preparation and a practice after we graduated in College. In this OJT Program allows you to face the reality where in you can talk to the real professionals, and do task seriously. I must say that this OJT is complicated yet fulfilling. This is a way to improve and develop more in life. To gain new knowledge, to experience unusual things. To be independent, the most important word. To stand on your own without any help of the other people, without depending on them. To become the better person as you can be despite the failures, rejections, and being ignored by the people around you, because they were thinking that you can’t do it even if you can. All you have to do is to prove yourself to them. Do not let them accuse you on something that you didn’t do yet. All I want to say is try something new and do not be contented on the position you have right now because life gets boring when you are staying in what you have right now. Let yourself to grow. Do not afraid to show the real you. We are all unique in our different ways.

Why did I spend my on-job-training on a bank which is not related to my course? It is because my father told me that the Development Bank of the Philippines is hiring for an intern and I don’t want to lose this opportunity that’s why I applied in this company. And it is a bit hard to find a company that hires an Intern like me. And also, I am running out of time because the enrollment for this mid-year class is until June 14, 2019 and my clearance is not yet done because I don’t have a signature in clinic. So, I’m not able to enroll on the given due date of enrollment.  The school registrar won’t let me enroll because of incomplete clearance so I made a late enrollment letter. But after completing the requirements for the enrollment, I am finally enrolled.

Do you think I can finally start my OJT after the enrollment? The answer is no. The company supervisor needs to pass the requirements that I gave to them like Resume, Recommendation Letter, and Good Moral, to the main branch in Manila to know if I’m qualified or not in the company. And they tell me that they will call me after a 1 week. Meanwhile, some of my classmates are already started their OJT at their respective company and I’m just at home waiting for the company call.

Finally, after a week, my phone rings. The long wait is over.  And Ms. Erika, the Teller and Administrator at DBP said ‘Good Day Mr. Mark Anthony! You may now start your internship today. Thank You’. I felt happy and nervous because I can finally start my OJT after waiting. I tell myself that I’m going to do my best in this OJT and I feel motivated because after all the waiting and hard times, I am able to start my OJT.

I reach DBP at 9:30 am, and I’m late but it’s okay because it’s just my first day and they just inform me in that day also. So, I wait for a couple of minutes before the OIC Cashier Ms. Ann accommodate me. Then Mr. Nilo the branch head and Ms. Ann welcomed and oriented me about the rules and regulations inside and outside the DBP. And all of the staff welcomed me in my first day. The time has come. This is it. Welcome to DBP.

That feeling that after all the sacrifices and struggle you encounter, finally you get what you deserve. That feeling that your parents are proud of you because you are undergoing your training at a famous bank. That feeling that God never leave you, and he is always there for you no matter what happen. I must say that it’s really fulfilling.

My first week in Development Bank of the Philippines (Subic) was very exciting. Everything is new to me. From the people I see, from the task their doing, until the type of working environment. I don’t know how to interact with the people around the office. I don’t know if I can do the same things that they’re doing. I don’t know how things are going to be done. I don’t know the process. I know nothing at first.

The first workmate that I talk to is Ms. Sherrylyn my supervisor. She is very friendly and welcomed me in my first day. At the same day she explained to me how things/works are going to be done. They don’t pressure me at all. Ms. Sheena is also my supervisor  and here are the task that she given me for almost one month of staying at DBP: Receive documents (Documents that need to be sign, for information or need to take action and just a draft letter), Record some bank documents, Distribute Documents to other employee for their signatures, Answer few phone calls (but I pass it immediately to other employees, it is the most hard part for me because I don’t know what to say when callers asking for something), Send emails, Filing/Organizing Papers, Photocopy papers, Scan, Print, Typing, and other things that are related to office works. This is just the daily task that I do and learned.

Lessons I’ve learned from my OJT Experience

If you were going to ask me what I learned in my 200 hours working as an intern at DBP, it is not the activities or task that I have done but also how to act in a certain situation and how to socialize with co-workers. I also learned how to speak with people professionally especially with my bosses or co-workers. My co-workers also thought me how to behave professionally in the office. Just observing the everyday routine has taught me more about team work, and how people can come together to get things done. I learned to accept their constructive criticism to me because they just want me to become better person and it is also for my own good and growth. I also learned to work hard no matter what I’m doing, even if it is just a small task or unimportant. I learned to become more independent I need to make my own decisions and do things own my own. Making connections with my co-workers is the best things that I learned. I need to communicate with them and feel that we’re just one big family. We eat together in lunch and they share stories/talking while we eat together. I also feel important though I’m just a beginner in working and an intern only but I realize that as long as I contribute to make things done, I am also important to the company. And I also learned that it is not easy to make money, you need to work hard every day for you to have a salary. They gave me Php 50.00 every day for my allowance and I’m thankful for it. Everything is just normal for me as time pass by. I observe the daily routine of my co-workers every day. I feel that I am really an employee here although it’s not. And I really like it, I love what I’m doing though some tasks that I do are not IT related.

People met and dealt with (My Personal Experience)

My co-workers are so friendly, kind, generous, hardworking, and fun to be with. And here are some of them that I met:

learning experience essay ojt

There is one time that they offered me a food, and I didn’t take it because I’m so shy. They keep on offering the food to me, actually they force me to take it but I didn’t. They are annoyed at me because of my attitude of being shy and I feel a bit sad. Actually, I want to take the food but I’m really shy that time. Mr. Fidencio, really annoyed to me, I understand that he just want me to eat the food that they offer. And then Mrs. Sherrylyn asked me if I know the word ‘pakikisama’, and I said yes. I know that she has something to indicate with what she said. And I tell myself ‘why Am I acting like this?’. I didn’t understand myself that time.

So, I decided to change this kind of attitude. I tell myself that ‘Once they offer me again some food, or even they didn’t offer me just for the sake of joining them, I will get it’. This is one of the lessons I learned here, to join with co-workers. To be sociable with them. For me it is not easy to do, to change easily. But I’m doing my best to become better person. They just want me to become sociable and not shy anymore. And I’m thankful to them because they just want me to become better than before.

IT Skills Learned and Implemented

I learned so many things to develop my skills and nurture them. I gain some new found knowledge that I didn’t know. I’ve learned how to photocopy the checks for filling purposes and scanning some bank documents. I always scan the teller’s transaction like the deposit slips, withdrawal slips, encashment check, and some supporting documents then after I scanned something, I stamp it just to know that the documents are already scanned. I’ve learned that before every transaction that they gave to me must be scanned and signed by the supervisor and manager before I can file/save the transaction by the date it was transact, then arrange it according to the account number and also according to the date it was done. They teach me to look for folder of the clients inside the vault. They always make sure that the folders are always in alphabetical order so that it would be easy for them to find it once they need it again. I’ve learned how to generate salary loans report using their system. One of the hardest tasks is printing the CASA report using dot matrix printer because the print would be messed up if you don’t watch it while printing. I learned how to print an Accuity report of the clients and I learned some types of ID like Pag-IBIG ID, Company ID, UMID and etc.

Problems encountered and solutions applied

I’m too hesitant to ask questions – They are so serious in their work and I’m having a problem asking them a question because of thinking that I might disturb them. So, I tried to communicate with them. I tell myself that I’m just an Intern here and it’s normal to ask questions because you didn’t know everything here. And I make sure I will ask question if they do nothing to avoid distracting them.

Having a time conflicts between classes in school and the OJT  – Some of my classmates already finished their OJT and I’m just one left behind. I still have 32 hours remaining to accomplish it. So, the solution I thought is every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I will go to the workplace because in those days, my class is half day so I still have 5 hours remaining to go in my workplace/job. But since I’m not completing 8 hours a day in my job, I didn’t get allowance from the company, but it’s okay to me at least they let me finish my remaining OJT hours.

Lack of self-confidence and poor communication skill – This is the major problem that I experienced in this OJT. I realized that in real world of job, you should be a good communicator and have a self-confidence in you in order to become successful. Everyday I’m looking forward to a be a better me, I’m in the process right now of improving my weak skills like this. There’s always room for improvement and I know I can do it. I believe in myself and I’m not doing this for everyone rather I’m doing this for myself.

Recommendations/Suggestions to Improve the OJT Program of GC-CCS

I would like to suggest that they should offer some IT company to the students if they know something. So that it will be easy for the student to find a company that is IT related or about computers. Like me, the workplace that I spend my OJT is on a bank which is not related to IT but I know it is also my fault because I didn’t effort to find any IT company but still, I’m still blessed and thankful that I worked at DBP. It was a memorable learning experience. But still I did some related IT task like photocopying, printing, scanning etc. I’ll never regret that I spend my Practicum here because they changed me and they let me realized the real world after graduating at college. That’s the only suggestion or recommendation that I could say, and I’m thankful also to my college department (CCS) because they implemented this Practicum I.

I have some advice to those students who will take their Practicum in the near future. You should have the willingness to work and determination to finish your Practicum. You should be confident with yourself and practice good communication skills. Respect your co workers and act/behave professionally in your workplace. Accept all the constructive criticism that you will encounter. Always believe in your abilities. Lastly, be sociable and build connections with your co-workers.

The retention of women engineers is an ongoing problem. Under-researched factors include interesting and challenging work, what this work entails, how it is attained, the role of informal networking and inequalities women experience attaining this work. Through an innovative critical ethnography, which adopts social network analysis methods, six engineering teams in a project-based organisation are studied as they work and network. Major findings identify that interesting, challenging work is attained through project work. Differences are found for what constitutes interesting, challenging work for women and men, as well as generalist and technical specialist engineers. The process for assigning engineers to project teams and the role of powerful and influential people in that process are identified. Structural differences are found in the gender makeup of women’s and men’s co-worker, friendship, technical and career advice networks. While the focus of men’s friendship connections with men is career building, women’s same-gender friendships offer support of which men have no need. Exclusionary male friendship networks are also found. These factors impact on women’s ability to develop visibility as experienced professionals and connections with the powerful and influential. Combined with a long work hours culture and requirement to develop networks out of work hours, women experience inequalities in being assigned to project teams and attaining interesting challenging work.

NSF Conference Report: Women & Science -- Celebrating Achievements, Charting Challenges

This report summarizes the discussions, ideas, and recommendations of the Women & Science: Celebrating Achievements, Charting Challenges conference. The purpose of the conference was to take stock of the achievements that women have made, assess what works best in the classroom and workplace, and chart a new course to address the challenges that remain. The report makes the following seven recommendations: 1.Communicate with women and girls about the importance of being scientifically literate. Increase public understanding of the role that women do and can play in science and engineering while dispelling myths and stereotypes.2.Rather than relying on quick fixes to local problems, seek to transform the systems of education and the sciences by holding institutions account-able for their performance as employers and places of learning for all people.3.Recognize and reinforce the importance of mentoring and being mentored at all levels of education and career.4.Enable women and girls to participate fully in science and engineering by making available a greater variety of resources. These resources include career awareness and career planning assistance and opportunities to interact within and across disciplinary fields and sectors of the economy.5.Accommodate the needs of women by recognizing a diversity of approaches to learning and the multiple paths women take to becoming literate citizens and career professionals in science and engineering.T 6.Strengthen connections between organizations that have a stake in the participation of women in the sciences and engineering, such as the corporate and academic worlds, the formal and informal education sectors, associations of women and associations of sciences, and between higher education and K-12 schools.7.Place greater emphasis on determining what works best in increasing opportunities for women and girls and how this knowledge can be shared and used by others.
