The Health Insurance Marketplace is Open for Business
People without access to health insurance can enroll for standardized coverage through the new health insurance marketplaces that are run by their state, the federal government, or a combination of the two. The Health Insurance Marketplace — also known as Health Exchanges — is part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The Marketplace will help you find health insurance that fits your budget and meets your needs.
The best place to get the latest, most accurate, information on the Marketplace is HealthCare.gov , There, you can learn what the Health Insurance marketplace is, who can apply for insurance, how to get insurance, how to lower your costs and more. If you own a small business, there’s information for you too.
The Marketplace will help you find health insurance that fits your budget and meets your needs, with less hassle. No matter where you live, you may buy insurance from private health plans that provide a comprehensive set of benefits, including doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care and prescriptions. In addition, plans in the Marketplace must treat you fairly; they can’t deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
With a single application, you can also see if you qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or for savings you can use right away to lower your health insurance premiums.
At HealthCare.gov , you can read information that pertains to you, print checklists and watch videos that will help you get ready to apply and enroll. You and your family can explore every qualified health plan in your area, and fill out an application when you’re ready. You’ll be able to take control with better information, including details about benefits and prices presented in clear language you can understand, so you’ll know what your premiums, deductibles, and other costs will be before you make a choice.
Once you’ve decided on a plan, you don’t need to go anywhere else.
If you live in Nevada, Nevada Health Link is the Health Insurance Marketplace to serve you. You can find specific information for Nevada residents at NevadaHealthLink.com , where you can compare plans, apply for coverage and enroll, in addition to HealthCare.gov .

Officials start talks to save financially ailing Nassau University Medical Center
State and local officials are in talks to come up with a plan to save Nassau University Medical Center, which has for years been on the brink of running out of money.
Nassau county executives met with representatives from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office late last week to determine how to keep the East Meadow hospital afloat, according to a report from Newsday and confirmed by Crain’s . Officials including Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Nassau Interim Finance Authority Richard Kessel have long urged the state to come up with a plan to aid the county’s only public hospital.
Sam Spokony, a representative from the governor’s office, said the state is committed to working with key stakeholders to ensure the long-term stability of Nassau University Medical Center.
A representative from Blakeman’s office did not return a request for comment on Monday.
Concerns about the hospital’s fiscal future come as it has faced significant financial challenges in recent years. Nassau University Medical Center lost $142 million in 2023, according to an audit released in June. Recent losses improved slightly over the $164 million deficit the hospital recorded in 2022, but still represent its second-highest year of losses on record.
Financial challenges are largely a result of declining hospital services in the last decade, according to federal cost report data. Discharges at Nassau University Medical Center dropped by 22%, as the hospital hired more employees and raised its salary costs by a third.
But the hospital says it is on track to improve its financial status. It has hired a new chief financial officer and implemented a five-year financial recovery plan that has reduced its expected losses by $100 million, a spokesperson said.
Nevertheless, Nassau University Medical Center says it still needs subsidies from the state to stay in business. A spokesperson said that the state has cut the public hospital’s funding by $300 million since 2020, adding that leadership is seeking $390 million in state grants to fill the gaps.
The move by state and county officials to address the Nassau University Medical Center’s financial challenges come as public and safety-net hospitals face steep financial losses statewide. Less people are seeking care in hospitals, instead going to outpatient clinics for care due to advancements in the medical field.
“The fundamental thing that’s happening for a lot of these hospitals is that they are losing customers,” said Bill Hammond, a senior health policy fellow at the Empire Center for Public Policy, a conservative-leaning think tank based in Albany.
Public hospitals and those that aren’t a part of a larger system are more likely to suffer, since they don’t have as strong of a referral network or the large inpatient revenues to stay afloat, Hammond said. “A standalone hospital, in this environment, is going to struggle.”
