Engaging ela education, holiday activities for middle school students.

Happy Holidays! Can you believe the holiday season has already begun? As I’m writing this, Hanukkah is underway and Christmas and Kwanza and New Year’s Day will be here before we know it!

Somehow, I always feel like the last few weeks of the calendar year are SO crazy! With the holiday shopping, parties, family traditions and all the rest, it is hard to stay on top of the teacher game as well! That’s why I love using holiday activities in my classroom! I traditionally incorporate several holiday-themed activities in my classroom, including a study of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol , reading informational texts about diverse holidays and learning to write business letters!

Holiday Activity FREEBIE !

I wanted to share some FREE Holiday Activities with you to help make your planning and preparation go a little smoother this December! I’ve included 10 Holiday-themed Journal Writing Prompts . These prompts cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from writing fictional stories to personal narratives to more serious and reflective responses! You can easily pick and choose the activities that will work for your classroom.

Additionally, I’ve included writing paper for each prompt as well as a Slides presentation with a slide for each prompt! No-prep is required! This is simply an easy, low stress holiday activity that also helps students improve their writing! Everybody wins!

Family Holiday Traditions

One of the writing prompts asks students to discuss some of their holiday traditions. My all-time favorite holiday tradition is the Sibling Gift Exchange! This is something both my family and my husband’s family did when we were growing up and we’ve continued it with our own children! Watching my children pick out small gifts for each other is simply magical! My kids are always thrilled to choose something they think the others will love! Ironically, these small gifts often become the favorite gift–even when larger or more expensive gifts are received! I just love it!

I LOVE hearing about traditions from other families and cultures–what do you do to celebrate these winter months?

31 December Writing Prompts

The Christmas holidays are on their way! To keep you busy this festive season, we created 31 December writing prompts to challenge you this month. Our list includes a mix of creative, reflective and even some festive journal prompts . Each prompt is great for students in the first grade all the way up to the fifth grade, and even grown-ups!

With just under half a month to go, we challenge you to complete as many of these prompts by the end of December. So get out your notebook, a pen or a pencil and start writing away! Once you have completed all 31 prompts you can look back at each one and reflect on your writing as improved or changed over the month.

Psst! Did you manage to complete our November writing challenge ? Don’t worry, you can still complete it if you haven’t!

From Christmas elves to friendship and kindness , here is our list of 31 December writing prompts:

• Write one sentence to describe your favourite holiday memories. You can also draw a picture of this memory to go with the sentence. 
• Describe the weather outside in great detail. Is it cloudy, cold, raining or snowing?
• Instead of going to the shops and buying new presents, why not make your own? Make a list of at least three handmade presents you can make at home. 
• How do Cheetah’s celebrate Christmas in the wild?  Describe a day in the life of a Cheetah who is preparing for Christmas day.
• Create your own Christmas cards , and include a message to your friends inside.
• Write a short Christmas story about Santa called: A Journey Around the World.
• Make a list of three things you love about Christmas and three things you hate about it.
• Write a story about a friendly Robin who needs to find the perfect gift for their best friend, the crow. 
• Your friend has had a terrible year, and you want to make Christmas extra fun for them. What do you do? (Check out this post on 56+ writing prompts about friendship )
• Design your own Christmas jumper, and describe its appearance. 
• Imagine you work at Santa’s workshop, and you need to hire more Christmas elves. Write a job description to help you hire a new elf for Santa’s workshop. Think about what tasks the elf will do, and what skills it will need.
• Write your own Christmas song about elves that love to dance.
• Make a list of at least five ways you can help someone else this month.
• Why do people celebrate Christmas every year?
• What Christmas traditions do your family follow each year? Describe this tradition in great detail and why it is important to you.
• Write a story about five friends who come together on Christmas Day.
• Make a list of at least 10 activities you can do indoors when it’s too cold outside.
• Based on your own experiences, write a short story about being kind to others. 
• Pick at least three different cultures, and write about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. 
• Would you rather be a Christmas elf or a reindeer at Christmas? Explain your choice.
• Create your own holiday postcard and send it to your best friend. What message would you include on the back?
•  Make a list of five games you can play in the snow with your friends.
•  What is your favourite movie to watch during the Christmas holidays, and why?

Christmas Activities Comprehension for Middle School

Finding the right Christmas reading comprehension activities and worksheets for middle school can help alleviate some of the stress ELA teachers face during the holidays. Many middle school students are very excited and may fondly remember working on Christmas activities in elementary school. I always wanted to include festive activities in my lesson plans, but I just didn’t have the room in our pacing calendar to do anything that wasn’t based on the standards. I decided to create these fun and engaging Christmas reading comprehension activities to use in my middle school classroom.

Engage your middle school students with Christmas reading comprehension passages.

Your middle school students are used to reading passages, so I created reading comprehension passages that they would get excited about! My Santa Claus differentiated reading passage explains the history of Santa Claus. The Reindeer differentiated passage will inform your students about reindeer. These reading comprehension passages come written at two levels and include a differentiated context clues activity, reading comprehension questions, and a writing assignment. These print and go activities are perfect for independent work so that you can work on your to do list in the days before the holiday break.

Give your students authentic practice making inferences with this Christmas text message analysis activity!

People make inferences regularly, but our students don’t always realize this. My text message analysis activities are very popular because students love the familiar format and provide great inferencing practice. I created a special Christmas version of this resource that allows students to practice making inferences while reading festive text messages.

Let your students color AND practice reading comprehension skills at the same time!

Coloring is a fun and relaxing activity for all ages. I created these context clues color by number activities to allow students to practice using context clues while coloring fun images. In this resource, students will read Christmas-themed sentences and use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. They will then color in boxes to reveal a mystery image.

Provide a dictionary and thesaurus so that students can look for interesting words to improve their work. Use the enclosed 2 checklists to encourage them to think about spelling and punctuation.

Improve Creativity with Christian Writing Prompts for Kids

When thinking outside the box, you can actually improve creativity with Christian writing prompts , especially for younger to middle-aged kids. Using Christian-based prompts is also a great way to include God’s Word in your homeschooling curriculum. And the cool thing is you don’t need big fancy textbooks to do it. Below are a few practical suggestions and benefits for helping your kids creatively in everyday life.

How to Improve Creativity with Christian Writing Prompts

Start by establishing a journaling time..

I find that when we are intentional about something, it is easier to implement. In this case, specifying a unique quiet time for writing will become a powerful tool your children will carry well into their adulthood. It will help paint the picture that growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ doesn’t just take place at church. Academically speaking, journaling can also help with writing skills. Try morning journaling, but if you are not a morning person, you can always pick another time of the day.

If you need journal ideas, try using a prayer journal, bible journaling, a gratitude journal, or letting them create their own journal. There are many creative ways to use journals!

Choose a verse of the day.

If you’re looking for a quick writing activity or journal entry, choose a verse of the day or let your kids pick their favorite Bible verse to write about. You can use life events as a starting point or a specific topic that deals with a particular area of spiritual growth. There are a number of Scriptures that speak to the different areas of your life so those can be used as writing prompts as well.

Develop writing prompts from a Bible study.

Even young children can improve their creativity in this way. They can pick a Bible character and describe them in their own words. If you’re child is not writing fluently, you can use dictation, which is still a form of writing and communication.

Use a variety of resources.

Sometimes you need a different way to teach a concept. When it comes to improving creativity from a biblically-based perspective, you can use different types of resources. If your children are old enough, consider incorporating the YouVersion Bible app. This app not only has several different translations of Scripture, but also has daily Scripture reading, Bible studies, and more.

Another resource that has become popular over the years is the journaling Bible. These are designed for writing, drawing, doodling, and more. Some people that I talk to about bible journaling say it really makes the Word of God come to life and helps them to study on a deeper level. It is also sure to help enhance creativity.

Christian journal prompts like the writing prompts I have below are easy to implement in daily life. By means of Bible stories, particular accounts, and Bible characters, they add a breath of fresh air to writing and new insights about learning Scripture.
