How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay About a Person You Admire

essay describing a person you admire

Writing a descriptive essay, or a “describe a person you admire essay” can be a fantastic way of developing your writing skills. These skills will be particularly useful if you choose to write fiction.

This type of writing is very different to academic writing, but it is hugely rewarding, and doing it well can become a stepping stone into a career in writing in the United Kingdom.

Step one: Choose your subject/Brainstorm

The essay about someone you admire could focus on, for example, your father, your mother, a friend, a grandparent, a celebrity like UK favourite Kate Middleton, a public figure like Mahatma Ghandi or your favourite teacher.

Write a paragraph about a person you admire as you brainstorm. Think about what message you want to get across.

Step two: Write your first draft

Your first draft is exactly that – a first draft. Don’t worry too much about everything being perfect. The most important thing at this point is getting all your thoughts down on paper.

Remember, this is a descriptive essay about a person you love and feel admiration for – you want the reader to feel as though they know the person after reading your piece.

A good writer can make you feel as though you know a person. A great writer makes you care about the person.

Show, don’t tell

I’m sure you’ve come across this term before. It’s the mantra of most creative writers and their teachers. But what does it actually mean?

It’s simple really. Use words to build up a picture in your reader’s mind. Don’t just tell them things; let them see it in their mind.

For example:

Telling – The man was angry

Showing – The man jumped to his feet, his face red and frowning. He gave an unintelligible roar, spraying spittle in front of his face. He crossed the room in three quick strides, wrenching the door open and slamming it shut behind him.

Do you see the difference there? You can show the reader that the man is angry without even using the word. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why showing is a better writing technique.

Use the senses

To really bring your piece to life and make the reader feel a personal connection to your writing, use all of the senses:

Sight – Describe the physical attributes of the person

Sound – What does their speech sound like?

Touch – What do they feel like – for example, are their hands rough from years of hard work?

Smell – What smells do you associate with the person? Did they always wear a certain scent?

Taste – Do you associate any tastes with the person? Did they have a signature cake recipe that no one can match?

Step three: Edit

Reread your work, concentrating on the following:

  • Does the essay flow well? If not, re-order your paragraphs until it does.
  • Try to imagine you are reading about a stranger. Have you included enough details to make you feel like you know them? Do you know what they look like? Do you feel as though you understand their character and motivations?
  • Have you showed rather than told?
  • Of course, check your spelling, punctuation and grammar too. Have you used clichés? Too many adjectives?

If, at the end of the piece, you feel something towards the person, you have done a good job!

500 Words Essay on The Person You Admire the Most

The person I admire the most is someone who has not just achieved great heights in his career but has also led a life filled with dignity, respect, and humility. This person is none other than the world-renowned physicist, Albert Einstein.

Early Life and Struggles

Albert Einstein, born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany, is a testament to the fact that academic brilliance does not always predict future success. He was a late talker and performed poorly in school. Yet, his curiosity about the mysteries of the universe was unquenchable. He pursued knowledge with a passion that eventually led him to become one of the most influential scientists in history.

Scientific Achievements

Einstein’s contributions to science are unparalleled. His theory of relativity revolutionized the way we understand the universe. His equation, E=mc², which describes the equivalence of energy (E) and mass (m), has been dubbed the world’s most famous equation. These achievements are not what I admire most about him, though. It’s his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his ability to think beyond the conventional that truly inspire me.

Character and Values

Beyond his scientific achievements, Einstein was a man of strong character and values. He was a pacifist, humanist, and a staunch supporter of civil rights. His quote, “I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university,” reflects his belief in equality and respect for all. His humility, despite his global fame, is a trait that I deeply admire.

Einstein’s legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions. He has become a symbol of genius and creativity. His life story encourages us to question, explore, and never stop learning. His perseverance in the face of adversity serves as a reminder that success is not always a straight path but often a winding journey filled with challenges.

Albert Einstein’s life and achievements embody the characteristics that I admire the most: resilience, curiosity, humility, and a deep respect for all humanity. His relentless pursuit of knowledge, despite the obstacles he faced, inspires me to approach my own challenges with the same determination. His humility and respect for all individuals, regardless of their status, remind me of the kind of person I aspire to be. It is for these reasons that Albert Einstein is the person I admire the most.

Describe a person you love/like/admire

You should say

  • who that person is
  • what you usually do with this person
  • how often you see this person

and explain why you love/like/admire this person.

Sample Answer 1:

“More often than not, if people are asked this question, their answer would either be a celebrity like an actor or a singer, a politician, or someone who is famous. But for me, I would have to say that the person I most admire is a family member.

For everyone, ‘family’ is the most valuable asset. One cannot exist without a family, and a family is a place where everyone may expect to get anything without expecting anything in return. That is why the person I look up to the most is my father. He keeps our family together. In my life, he is my hero. For his exceptional abilities, my father is extremely admirable.

He has led me along the right route so that I can excel in both my professional and personal lives. He aided me in every way imaginable while I was a child, and as I grew older, he showed me how to make decisions. The most essential thing is that he never compels me to do or perform something against my choice. He always gives me the benefit of the doubt, presents me the options, and leads me to choose the best path. I am now a well-known photographer in our city, thanks to his guidance. When he learned that I wanted to be a photographer, he lowered his costs in half and purchased me the first camera of my life.

My father is no longer employed and spends his time with his family and friends. Most of his pals have retired as well, and they spend their time together reminiscing about their youth. My father also takes my mom out on occasion. They spend the entire day outside and return at night, just like they did when they first married. My parents’ romanticism appeals to me. Furthermore, my father enjoys gardening and looks after the garden in front of our house. He frequently purchases flowers in various categories and requests that I photograph him with the plants.

I admire and will continue to admire my father for his honesty, integrity, and sense of duty. I have never seen him neglect his obligations to my family. My father’s most distinguishing characteristic is his compassion for people, regardless of their relationship with him. In the midst of his hundreds of tasks, he rushed to care for a member of the family who had become ill. He also used to assist the poor and keep the events hidden from us. I am extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful father.”

Follow-up Question:

Does your father know how much you admire him?

“Yes, I have told him before and I would definitely continue to let him know how much I admire and respect him not just as my father but as a person as well. He deserves to know the kind of impact he had on me and my siblings.”

Do you think you would also become a good father in the future?

“It’s really hard to know what the future holds, but if I would be like my father, even half of what he has accomplished, I’d be extremely grateful. He has become a good father to me and my siblings and a good husband to my mom and we couldn’t ask for anything. I sure hope to be like him when the time comes.“

essay describing a person you admire

Describe a person you admire the most

Who is this person?

How you know him/her?

What qualities he/she has?

And explain why you admire this person?

Many people have inspired me in my life, but the person I admire the most is my mother. She is a strong woman who held me close and safe even in the most difficult times. Not only is she a great parent but also a remarkable teacher. She teaches science to high school students and has conducted many workshops to demonstrate the use of eco-friendly products in our daily lives. Moreover, she believes in reuse and recycling methods; she makes flowerpots out of used bottles and grows plants in them.

She is a kind-hearted lady who always lends a helping hand to anyone in need. She conducts scholarship drives to help students who cannot afford tuition fees which I find inspiring. Besides, she has a great sense of humor and can turn a bad day into a good one. I share all of my  woes  with her as she has a  jovial  nature and always tries to understand a situation from my perspective instead of jumping to conclusions. This has helped me not to lie about anything in general and to be upfront about my thoughts and feelings.

Although we sometimes have disagreements, we have an undying bond that connects us. I have learned to be compassionate and patient because of my mother and I am proud to have such an inspiring woman in my life. I aspire to be independent and have my own identity as she does.

Vocabulary:

  • Remarkable- exceptional
  • Woes- troubles
  • Jovial- cheerful and friendly
  • Compassionate- showing sympathy for others

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. do you think people who are famous are more admired than others.

On an average, I think you're likely to find that you consider at least most of them good, generous, hospitable, caring people. You might be tempted to think those people really are just ‘better’ people, because maybe being a ‘better’ person makes you more likely to be rich and successful. You would be wrong. The truth is that being successful makes people see you as a better person. Why? Because our brains are hard-wired to indiscriminately make the assumption that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people.

2. Which celebrities, according to you, should be admired more? Politicians, authors, sports person or movie star?

In my perspective, if any celebrity is genuinely concerned about the well being of his fellow humans and goes out of the way to contribute towards their welfare, then he or she deserves to be admired irrespective of the field he or she is in.

3. Do you think that scientists or army men should be admired more?

Both scientists and the army men deserve to be admired and recognised for their selfless service to their countries. Only men and women of high calibre can be in theses positions and hence we need to be indebted to their services.

4. Do you think people also see the weaknesses of the people they follow or they just avoid them?

As human beings each and every one of us has got our own strengths and weaknesses. The same is true in the case of celebrities too. If a person has attained celebrity status through his good nature, then his or her fans try to overlook his or her weaknesses too and don’t make a big deal out of it.

It's not unusual for a college admissions essay to talk about a person who played an important role in your development. Whether this is a parent, a friend, a coach, or a teacher, such essays can be powerful if they avoid common pitfalls.

Key Takeaways: An Essay on an Influential Person

  • Don't just describe a person you admire. Be analytical and reflective to explain why you admire them.
  • Essays focused on parents or celebrities are common and often not the best choice for your focus.
  • All good application essays are about you , even when you are writing about someone else, so make sure the admissions folks are getting to know you through your essay.

With the pre-2013 Common Application , one of the essay prompts stated, "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence." While you won't find this question among the seven 2020-21 Common Application essay prompts , the current application still allows you to write about an influential person with the "topic of your choice" option . Some of the other prompts also leave the door open for writing about an influential person.

Do Much More than Describe the Influential Person

Any essay on an influential person needs to do much more than describe that person. The act of describing requires very little critical thought, and as a result, it doesn't demonstrate the kind of analytical, reflective, and thoughtful writing that will be required of you in college. Be sure to examine why the person was influential to you, and you should analyze the ways in which you have changed because of your relationship with the person.

Think Twice About Essays on Mom or Dad

There is nothing wrong with writing about one of your parents for this essay, but make sure your relationship with your parent is unusual and compelling in some way. The admissions folks get a lot of essays that focus on a parent, and your writing won't stand out if you simply make generic points about parenting. If you find yourself making points like "my Dad was a great role model" or "my mother always pushed me to do my best," rethink your approach to the question. Consider the millions of students who could write the exact same essay.

Don't Be Star Struck

In most cases, you should avoid writing an essay about the lead singer in your favorite band or the movie star who you idolize. Such essays can be okay if handled well, but often the writer ends up sounding like a pop culture junkie rather than a thoughtful independent thinker.

Obscure Subject Matter is Fine

Be sure to read Max's essay on an influential person. Max writes about a rather unremarkable junior high kid he encountered while teaching summer camp. The essay succeeds in part because the choice of subject matter is unusual and obscure. Among a million application essays, Max's will be the only one to focus on this young boy. Also, the boy isn't even a role model. Instead, he's an ordinary kid who inadvertently makes Max challenge his preconceptions.

The "Significant Influence" Need Not Be Positive

The majority of essays written about influential people focus on role models: "my Mom/Dad/brother/friend/teacher/neighbor/coach taught me to be a better person through his or her great example..." Such essays are often excellent, but they are also a bit predictable. Keep in mind that a person can have a significant influence without having an entirely "positive" influence. Jill's essay , for example, focuses on a woman with only a few positive qualities. You could even write about someone who is abusive or hateful. Evil can have as much "influence" on us as good.

You Are Also Writing About Yourself

When you choose to write about a person who has had an influence on you, you will be most successful if you are also reflective and introspective. Your essay will be partly about the influential person, but it is equally about you. To understand someone's influence on you, you need to understand yourself — your strengths, your short-comings, the areas where you still need to grow.

As with the college admissions essay, you need to make sure a response reveals your own interests, passions, personality, and character. The details of this essay need to reveal that you are the type of person who will contribute to the campus community in a positive way.

Sample Descriptive Essay About A Person You Admire

  • Views 327532
  • Author Abigal W.

When asked about the person I admire in the universe, I do not require to look at celebrities or any other big influential names in society. When it comes to me, the person I admire most in the world is my mother. We all have people whom we consider to be highly inspirational and influential to look upon, and in my case, my mother is an excellent example of these characters. She is an extraordinary person in my life because of her enduring strength that I dearly admire, and she is also kind as well as supportive.

One thing I most admire about my mother for is her strength, which appears to be resistant throughout hard times. My mother is a single mother, and she has managed to raise three children all by herself, providing us with a good life and education, while still balancing work. For instance, when my brother and I cleared high school, only one of us hoped to join college because of our financial situation, but she worked two jobs to ensure that we enrolled in college. Single mothers across the globe face financial instability where they are forced to engage in other strategies to extend income to take care of their family (West et al. 359). I hold great admiration for my mother because of her determination, how she never backs down, and the way she stands up for what she believes in no matter the hardships that come along.

My mother has a striking appearance, but behind this, she is very alluring, admirable, and kind. At first, one can conclude that she is a blunt and cold person because of her quiet nature, but after knowing her, she turns out to be a friendly, warm-hearted, gentle, and generous person. My mother has been a dedicated individual in the society through volunteering in church during weekends and holidays as well as helping in the local homeless shelters. Kindness is crucial and healthy since one takes pride in caring for others since they need caring, and it gives people a pleasant feeling (Adamu par. 6). Thanks to my mother, I have grown to be a kind-hearted and deeply-caring person since I believe that it's upon me to help those in need whenever I am capable.

I am lucky to have a mother who always supports me no matter my misgivings. No matter the activity I am in or the decision I make, my mother is still there for me to give me advice and encouragement, but at the end of the day, she is at all times by my side. I had a difficult time adapting to my first year in high school, and I almost quit, but my mum listened to my grievances, and with her support, I managed to finish high school. Supportive behavior is crucial for individual well-being, especially when it comes to emotional support, where a person can be able to relieve distress from a challenge (MacGeorge and Van Swol 7). My mother's supportive character has given me the strength to endure a lot of challenging situations in life as well as learn a lot in what life has to offer.

Special people like my mother exist to make our lives better and to mold us to become a better version of ourselves. My mother is a strong spirited person, kind-hearted, has unbreakable strength and very supportive. Over the years, I have learned a lot through her character and thoughts, which have molded me to the caring, decent, and brilliant person I am today. The people around us turn out to be the best role models.

Describe a person you love/like/admire

You should say:.

  • What relation this person is to you?
  • What are your first memories of this person?
  • How often do you see this person?
  • And explain why you really admire this person.

Sample Answer 1

Here is the sample for the “Describe a person you love/like/admire” topic

Unquestionably, family is the most valuable thing for almost every individual. It is entirely unimaginable to live without my family for me. So, if I have to talk about one person I admire the most, that would be my sister. Although she is 11 years younger than me, this massive age gap doesn’t pose a hurdle between us in any way.

As much as I can recall, I was on the ninth cloud when she came into our lives. When she was a toddler, I was already in my teens. Thus, I used to try and overpower her, demonstrating my teenage qualities and authority over her. However, despite all of it, I love her unconditionally. When she grew up, she started displaying understanding attributes. And today, now that I have entered my adult years and have gone through all those years she is currently relishing, I try and be as lenient yet considerate as possible.

One of the things that are lacking, though, is the time we spent together. She is held up with her school from dawn to dusk and then extra tuitions. Thus, we only get to spend a few hours together during the night. Even then, because of our excessive exhaustion from a prolonged day, we doze off quickly. So, I would like to spend more time with her.

All in all, one of the best qualities that I admire the most in her is maturity. She is thoughtful and empathetic towards others. Through my experiences, I have taught her how to be brave and deal with the world more meticulously. So, looking at her, being bold with every passing day, fills me up with a sense of pride.

Sample Answer 2

Generally, people may have admiration for a celebrity like a singer or an actor, but for me, it isn’t like that. I look up to people I know as role models. I admire my manager.

As a student with little experience in the tourism industry, it is lucky for me to have a talented mentor at work who keeps an eye on my professional training as well as daily life. She makes sure I keep track of the time I’m using productively.

I still remember the first time we got to know each other in the interview when the conversation started in a formal manner but ended up being just like an intimate chat between old friends because we shared so many common things in our interests and background. She struck me with her politeness and a bright smile, by which my stress was slowly released.

Regarding the frequency that we keep in touch, due to my internship schedule that requires daily presence at the office, I’ve got plenty of chances to work with my mentor. She motivates me to strengthen my skills, and never beats about the bush when it comes to criticism so that my performance can be enhanced. Specifically, she advises me never to let my English out of practice, so that I can maintain my English at an advanced level.

Lastly, I should also mention the reason why I admire my manager, well she has many years of experience in the industry and a deep understanding of my country’s history, culture, and geography that may take aback anyone at the first meeting. With her passion for promoting Vietnam’s tourism, she is the perfect example of a diligent and passionate employee.

Describe a Person You Admire

by Cara Kalf | Jul 30, 2022 | College Essay , College Essay Examples | 0 comments

Describe a Person You Admire

Most schools give you a lot of flexibility in the way you choose to present yourself in an essay. There are seven Common App prompts and six Coalition App prompts—and both include one that is “anything else you want to write about.” But whether for a supplemental essay, an Honors College application, or a scholarship, you might be facing more pointed questions. One popular and potentially challenging one is a variation on “Write about a person you admire.”

Who Do You Admire?

The trick with beginning an essay like this is the same as the trick for all essays. It’s simple , but not a shortcut: You have to brainstorm!

Something sneaky happens in your brain when you begin to think about this topic—I say “sneaky,” because I suspect it’s happening without your being consciously aware. When you ask yourself, “Who do I admire?” you are evaluating each answer immediately for the obvious follow-up: “And how does that reflect on me?” It’s not wrong to evaluate your answers in that way. In fact, it’s critical you do so. But first you have to generate a list of possibilities. If you evaluate your answers as you generate them, your creative brain shuts down. You’ll find it more difficult to generate names at all if you’re being critical of each name you produce.

Once you’ve spent at least 10 minutes brainstorming and have a list of at least six people—maybe even twice that many!—you can consider them equally for how they fit the prompt. That will involve thinking through how the question is asked, what kind of stories you might have to tell about that person, and potentially, how they have influenced you.

What’s the Specific Prompt?

To choose the best answer, you need to consider why the school is asking the question. Last year the University of North Carolina asked applicants to “Describe a peer you see as a community builder.” The subtext, of course, is, “What do you see as valuable in a community member? What kind of community member will you be?” But by specifically pointing to another, the school could ask, “What does a community builder look like?” while deliberately taking away the opportunity to brag about one’s own efforts. That might level the playing field for students who have good hearts but fewer opportunities, or it might just allow a school to consider whether you can see and appreciate the good in others. That might be something competitive schools don’t see enough in applicants!

Where Are the Stories?

Any essay of at least 150 words requires at least a brief anecdote to bring it to life . If you don’t have a story about a person you want to write about, why do you admire that person? The reader does not want to read your words, “Sara is kind and considerate.” The reader wants to see a time when Sara was kind and considerate, and come to their own conclusions. So when you consider the person you admire, ask yourself how you know they have the characteristics you see in them. How do you know your best friend is helpful, hard-working, or hopeful about the future? Is the story appropriate and engaging enough to share with others? Does it make sense without a lot of context, and is it short enough to fit in the space provided?

How Have They Influenced You?

When “Describe a person you admire” is a supplementary prompt, it’s pretty clear that it’s asking about that person, rather than you. But clearly, we are all influenced by the people we admire. Whether it’s a celebrity you’ll likely never meet but aspire to be like one day, or a mentor who has actively shaped who you already are, the person you are describing is a reflection of you in some way.

This is when we get back to evaluating your options in order to choose the person who makes the best impression on your specific readers. When I applied to journalism school, I was asked what major historical figure from the turn of the last century I might invite to dinner. There were countless people I could have chosen—but Joseph Pulitzer was an easier choice, knowing my audience.

When Do I Need This Essay?

Simple answer: Only when asked. You can say a fair amount about yourself through the story of a person you admire. That said, this is among the only topics I do not recommend for your main essay . Your 650-word essay should be focused on you —who you are, and how you’ve grown and changed into that person through what you’ve experienced. Any piece about a mentor ends up being entirely too focused on that person at your expense, leading admissions officers to repeatedly quip, “OK, we’d like to accept your grandma!” Don’t give them that opportunity.

If you’re applying this fall and haven’t started your main essay, it might be time for a kick in the pants! How about a self-guided Kick-Off Workshop ?

What is IELTS?

IELTS , or International English Language Testing System, is an exam for identifying the language proficiency of people willing to work or study in countries that speak English as the official language. The test, IELTS, which is designed by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English, contains listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections. This test is highly credible and is viewed favourably by educational institutions, employers, and immigration bodies across the globe.

What is an IELTS Cue Card?

IELTS Cue Card  or Task-2 of the Speaking module is the most challenging section because the students are given a card containing a topic and the prompts. The students are given 1-2 minutes to present the topic in a statement. A Cue Card is used to check the candidate's ability to speak, use different words that are more appropriate, and express ideas fluently. The topics can range from autobiographical stories to sharing my thoughts or discussing an issue.

Why Are IELTS Cue Cards Important?

The cue card segment evaluates your spontaneous speaking abilities without any preparation. So it is extremely tough. However, it is a crucial component that prepares you for real-life scenarios. Here are some advantages of cue cards in IELTS Exam:

  • Improves speaking fluency - you learn to speak spontaneously on a subject for 2 minutes.
  • Develops vocabulary - You need a solid vocabulary to talk exhaustively about any subject for 2 minutes. Cue cards assist in increasing vocabulary.
  • Grammatical structures: You must use accurate grammar to communicate coherently for 2 minutes. This enhances your grammatical range.
  • Thinking on your feet: You have only 1 minute to collect thoughts before speaking; this promotes your rapid thinking.
  • Real-world skills: In everyday life and professional situations, you frequently need to talk spontaneously on a specific subject. Cue cards prepare you for such circumstances.

So, to acquire a high band score, the preparation of cue cards is quite crucial. Even though the specific themes may differ, studying concepts and vocabulary on common topics can aid you enormously in the IELTS exam.

The test-takers are provided with a minute to prepare their answer, and following that, they can highlight key points they want to cover. The Cue Card section is tailored to evaluate not merely the proficiency in the language but also the candidate’s ability to organise his thoughts, sustain a coherent dialogue, and use language correctly and effectively to express one’s ideas. Generally, the IELTS Cue Card plays a big part in determining how well one has a command of English based on the assessment of the individual’s overall language proficiency.

Describe a Creative Person Cue Card - Sample Answer 1.

Creativity is a fantastic trait that appears in various forms. In my life, I have the honour of knowing an incredibly talented person, my friend Mr Gupta. His artistic efforts have left a lasting mark on our community, showing his unique ability and love for creation.

Who They Are?/ How Do You Know Them?

Mr Gupta is a former school teacher in his early seventies, living in the house next to mine. I have enjoyed knowing him for the past decade, and our friendship has become more robust. Despite his age, Mr. Gupta oozes young energy in his artistic activities.

What Creative Things Have They Done?

His imagination mainly shines through his woodworking projects. Mr. Gupta has turned his backyard into a makeshift studio where he crafts elaborate wooden figures and furniture. From tiny birdhouses to beautifully made chairs, his works are a testament to his skill and commitment. Recently, he built a hypnotic wooden painting showing scenes from our neighbourhood, showcasing his ability to blend art with local storylines.

And Explain Why You Think They Are Creative.

Mr. Gupta's creativity is awe-inspiring because of his ability to turn simple pieces of wood into works that tell a story. His attention to detail and effortless mixing of usefulness and beauty set him apart. Witnessing his works has improved our community aesthetically and inspired many, including myself, to respect the beauty of the most ordinary materials.

Sample Answer 2: Describe A Creative Person you Admire

Creativity knows no limits, and in my group, the person who embodies this idea is my cousin Rahul. His knack for turning everyday items into artistic wonders never ceases to amaze me, making him a light of creativity within our family.

One notable project of his was making a series of animation drawings showing the beauty of our city during different seasons. Mr. Sharma's imagination is most evident in his yard. Instead of standard flower pots, he uses old tyres painted in bright colours to put different flowers and herbs. Additionally, he's created birdhouses from discarded wood, creating a welcoming environment for the neighbourhood's avian residents.

Describe A Time When You Shared Something With Others Ielts Cue Card

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Follow-up Questions

Question: Is it beneficial for youngsters to study art?

Answer: Learning the arts helps them develop their future attributes such as creativity, inventiveness, independent thinking, emotional control, etc. It is appropriate for their overall development and provides them with a creative outlet in their spare time. If a youngster is too engaged in the arts, they may pursue that passion professionally.

Question: Do you believe you're an intelligent person?

Answer: I believe myself to be intelligent. People have appreciated my ability to paint and sketch.

Question: Do you believe leaders need to be creative?

Answer: Leaders must be unique. People will only follow them if their work is creative since they look uninteresting; yet, if they add originality to their job, speak, and do things, they will retain followers.

Question: What types of employment demand someone to be creative?

Answer: Everyone must be innovative in their employment. People who lack creativity may find their professions dull after only a few days. If a task has to be repeated on a regular basis, some ingenuity is required. For example, an engineer has to think of novel approaches to do things; a plumber must learn new skills every day to improve and simplify his work; a carpenter must learn new ways to do things to add grace to his work; and a teacher must believe of new ways to teach so that children are not bored.

Question: Should we support creative thinking in educational institutions?

Answer: Most students in a learning environment will be interested in various things. Some individuals are engaged in academics, while others are into sports and the arts. Consequently, it is critical to foster creativity in schools and universities so that students may study what they are passionate about.

Question: In what ways can parents support imagination in their children?

Answer: Parents can support imagination in their children by exposing them to different activities such as arts and crafts, music, and stories. Providing a conducive setting for discovery and testing develops their creative powers. Additionally, praising and valuing their artistic acts helps build confidence and a good approach towards invention.

Question: Do you think technology hampers or improves creativity?

Answer: Technology can play a dual role in creation. While excessive computer time may limit a person's exposure to real-world events, technology offers a stage for artistic expression. Digital tools and software enable people to make art, music, and creative projects. It eventually depends on how one uses technology – as a silent user or an involved maker.

Question: Is there a link between travel and creativity?

Answer: Absolutely. Travel introduces people to varied countries, scenery, and viewpoints, stimulating their creative thought. Experiencing new settings and connecting with people from different backgrounds can spark creative ideas. Many famous artists, writers, and scientists have drawn inspiration from their trips, showing the profound effect they can have on artistic efforts.

Question: How can companies support a creative atmosphere?

Answer: Workplaces can promote innovation by encouraging open conversation, welcoming different ideas, and offering joint project opportunities. Creating a comfortable and relaxed work setting, where workers feel supported in sharing their ideas, can lead to new solutions and a more involved workforce.

Question: Are there any downsides to emphasising imagination in education?

Answer: While developing imagination in education is important, there can be difficulties if it overshadows other essential skills. Striking a mix between innovation and fundamental information is important. Overemphasis on imagination might need to pay more attention to crucial academic basics. Therefore, a balanced approach combining artistic and standard learning methods is best for a complete education.

This is the debut of The Interview, The New York Times’s new weekly series, featuring in-depth conversations with fascinating people. Each week, David Marchese or Lulu Garcia-Navarro will speak with notable figures in the worlds of culture, politics, business, sports, wellness and beyond. Like the Magazine’s former Talk column, the conversations will appear online and in print, but now you can also listen to them in our new weekly podcast, “The Interview,” which is available wherever you get your podcasts. Below, you’ll find David’s first interview with the actress Anne Hathaway; Lulu’s first interview, with the Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid, is here .

The Interview Poster

Listen to the conversation with Anne Hathaway

On one level, Anne Hathaway’s new movie, “The Idea of You,” which arrives on Prime Video on May 2 and is directed by Michael Showalter, couldn’t be more straightforward. It’s an adaptation of Robinne Lee’s hit romance novel about Solène, a divorced 40-year-old mom played by Hathaway, who winds up in a relationship with a much younger man — a singer in a boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. Warmhearted and with unabashed mainstream appeal, the film is a return for the New Jersey-raised actress, who has fruitfully spent much of her time lately playing thornier characters in indie films, to the kinds of charming fish-out-of-water tales that first helped bring her to stardom, like “The Princess Diaries” and “The Devil Wears Prada.” This time, though, instead of being the plucky ingénue thrust into a glamorous, high-pressure situation, Hathaway is playing a character who’s coming into a new world a little less starry-eyed, and with a firmer sense of self.

But “The Idea of You” also works on another, more complicated, even self-referential level. It’s a movie about a woman pushing against societal expectations and getting a lot of grief for it, which is something Hathaway, 41, knows about. More than a decade ago, around the time she won an Academy Award for her work in “Les Misérables,” the online commentariat turned on Hathaway for … who knows, exactly? Some strange groupthink kicked in that caused people to pile on her for seeming like an inauthentic striver — or something. Other than as a case study in the inexplicable and random cruelty of the internet, the whole phenomenon, described at the time as Hathahate, makes even less sense now than it did then.

Since that time, Hathaway told me when we talked twice last month, she has been learning to let go of other people’s opinions and expectations of her as an actress, a celebrity and a human being. This has made her work even more compelling to watch and made her more guarded as a public figure. “I really like expressing myself through my work,” says Hathaway, who after so many years and so many great performances is still figuring out the best way to play the puzzling real-life part of a famous actress.

There are a bunch of things that are intriguing to me about the new movie. One of them is that there are a few of what I took to be Anne Hathaway psychological Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the film. I’ll get to those, but first: You haven’t done a romance in a while. Can you talk to me about why you wanted to do “The Idea of You”? It’s such a softball question, and I can feel my brain complicating it.

Go as complicated as you can. I still find it so much more natural to express my thoughts and feelings through characters and through the story. So a part of me wants to be like: Just see the movie. That’s why I wanted to make it. But I should probably be able to describe it. So, this is a movie about a woman healing her heart after a massive trust trauma, and it says that a bloom can happen in a person’s life at any stage. I found myself almost possessed with the need to explore what those two things meant and looked like.

I’m curious about the nature of that possession. Was it abstract, or did it connect to you in a direct way? Oh, it was completely direct. My character, Solène, might not seem like the most complicated character I’ve ever played. There’s no accent, there’s no particular gait — I love a character’s gait. But she felt familiar. I recognized aspects of myself in her. I recognized aspects of friends or women I admire. She had a richness to her, combined with this idea that early in her life she had been a people pleaser. I was excited by that idea of somebody at a place in their life where they’ve grown out of that phase.

essay describing a person you admire

I’m glad you brought up that people-pleaser line. That was one of the Easter eggs: “A people pleaser from New Jersey.” Yes.

But before I get into that, my vote for best Anne Hathaway character gait in a movie: “The Dark Knight Rises.” So much swagger! I worked with a choreographer for three weeks to find that swagger.

Really? Yes, I did. Because — oh, this is going to sound like a weird sentence — I wasn’t connected enough to my hips. I kept imagining a cat’s movement and the way it’s fluid and swishy but also strong and purposeful, and they helped me find my hips.

You need to introduce me to that choreographer, because not being connected enough to my hips describes most of my life problems. We are going to follow up, because I have so many thoughts! I didn’t feel connected to my body early in my life. It was this weird thing.

Why weren’t you connected to your body? That’s a great question. I mean, it would take me 41 years to answer that. It’s so many things, but I think it’s just assumed that we have a relationship with our body. Like you: Something you know about yourself is that you do not have a relationship with your hips.

Not a good one. But if somebody said, Here’s a path for you to have one, what would you do?

Oh, boy. I don’t know how to answer that. Let’s move on. Sure. Where are we going? We’re going to the knees or the torso?

I want to go back to the people-pleaser line. I interpreted the inclusion of the line “a people pleaser from New Jersey” as pretty intentional. Can you talk to me about why that line is in there? Well, she had to be from somewhere, and yeah, it might have been me who suggested that line. Maybe. Possibly.

Am I wrong in interpreting that line as self-referential? You are a people pleaser from New Jersey, right? I think I’m a former people pleaser from New Jersey. So much of the reason I was drawn to acting is that it was an outlet for expression that I could not find on my own. And in the space between feeling so connected when I was acting and so lost when I wasn’t, you try to make your way, and one of the ways that you make your way is, “Oh, if I do this, that will make someone else happy, and maybe that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.” It takes a long time to go, “That doesn’t really matter if you don’t know who you are.” Unless you just want an identity that’s all about pleasing people. Which I suppose is perfectly valid. But I’m not that nice.

It was interesting for me to revisit your work and see what I took to be — and I don’t mean this in a condescending way — an eager-beaver quality. I’m thinking of “The Devil Wears Prada” or “The Princess Diaries.” I think your character in “Valentine’s Day” had that, and in a slightly spikier way maybe “The Intern.” Was that quality something you consciously tried to change? I was not aware of it until this conversation. But I think there’s a thread that runs through those characters: someone trying to do something that they might not be comfortable with but think is the right thing to do. The thing I was interested in about Solène was this idea that, turning 40 and knowing who she was in a professional sense, knowing who she is as a mother, she had not necessarily given herself full freight to explore aspects of herself as a person.

Forty years old is a real milestone for people. But there’s also something weird about our cultural fixation on the arbitrary age of 40. I’m curious how you think about middle age. I don’t take it that seriously. There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things “middle age” simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.

This makes me sound like a New Age-y ding-dong, but — Go there. Come on. Let’s bring it out. Where are your crystals? I’ve got incense burning. Let’s do this.

What you said is exactly right: We can’t take for granted how much life we have left. But internalizing that, so that we can treat each day like it could be the last, is the hardest thing to do. As a formerly chronically stressed young woman, I just remember thinking one day: You are taking this for granted. You are taking your life for granted. You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky, and that would be lights out. So when I find the old instincts rising, I just tell myself, You are not going to die stressed.

This is a small question but maybe invites a big answer: What were you so stressed about? I didn’t know how to breathe yet. That was really complicated. I mean, it’s too — you’re right. It’s actually too big an answer and the simple answer is literally everything. I was very in my head about a lot of things.

Your answer to that question was about breathing. Earlier you alluded to not feeling comfortable in your body. Those are somatic things. You must have felt very alienated from your body. I love that you identified it as somatic. It feels a little too exposed to discuss the alienation I felt from my body, but there was a lot of somatic stress there.

Was drinking a way of dealing with that? Probably.

Fair enough. Let me ask you a goofier question now. OK. [Laughs.]

Then I’m going to circle back around to heavier stuff. The plot of the film turns on a trip to Coachella. Have you ever been to the festival? I have been to Coachella. Paul McCartney was the headliner, so it was magical.

Can I tell you a quick Coachella story? It can even be long.

I used to work for music magazines, and we had to cover the festival. So one year, it was too hot; I didn’t have enough water; I was drinking beer all day, taking other stuff, and by the end of the day I was fried and physically uncomfortable — You were so tweaked out.

I was like, I got to get out of here. And we had a plan that we would meet in the press area and someone would drive us back to our hotel. But I thought: I can’t wait. I’ll walk back to our hotel — it was 15 miles or whatever in the desert at night. I left the festival and within about 10 minutes realized I’m lost in the desert. No cars are coming by. My mind is totally foggy. I’m going to die on the highway trying to walk back to my hotel. Then a car pulls up and it’s my co-worker come to save me. They rescued you!

I got in the car and was like, “Thank god, I’ve been here forever, I didn’t know what I was going to do.” Then he looks at the clock: Like 22 minutes had passed. No. [Laughs.]

I was not at risk of dying. But to you, those 22 minutes —

Longest 22 minutes of my life. Well, I’m so happy everything went OK. Coachella is very dehydrating.

Very dehydrating. You know, I feel like I’ve danced around this: I’m wondering if you can tell me more about the change in you from a stressed-out person who’s, in your words, in her own head, to the person you are now. I don’t want to go into specifics too much, because I like to keep my personal things personal, but there was a moment in my life where — I don’t know. Do you ever have this feeling where you feel like you have yourself in the future, your best possible choice, turn around and guide you? Now I’m sounding very New Age.

Explain more about what you mean. I was just stuck in this feeling. It’s that thing about, I want to achieve things, I want to grow, and you think, mistakenly, that the way you do that is to be really hard on yourself. You drive yourself by self-criticism. I won’t go into the specifics, but there was a moment in which I realized that in order to keep that narrative alive, I was going to have to deny so much. I just said: You’re just going to have to accept that if nothing else happens to you, you’ve had a really great life. You have been given gifts and opportunities. And for you to continue to walk on this path, not being grateful, I don’t think that’s really who you are. It felt like a light went on.

What are the things that you want to achieve? What are the ambitions? Honestly, I don’t want to say, because they feel great to me, and I worry if I shared them and they got shredded — I don’t want to feel bad about them.

This is another one of the potential Easter eggs or self-referential lines that I picked up on in the film: There are a couple of references to Solène’s being picked apart on the internet. Did your experience going through that inform the character? Yes.

Can you tell me in what ways? Not really. It’s in the film.

Oh, phooey. Sorry. Look, what I can tell you is that, from personal experience, I knew that everything we were saying was true.

I can’t believe I just said “phooey.” Phooey.

Phooey! Oh, bluggernston!

In this conversation I’ve tried to create a throughline or arc to your career. Do you see a throughline or arc? I like to look toward the horizon rather than back at what I’ve done. I don’t watch my films. I love that so many of my movies are the films that you cuddle up with; I’m aware of that aspect of it, but the concept of having a name is weird. The idea of having a name that signifies something that could qualify as an Easter egg, it’s not a concept that I think about a lot.

Is anything cooking with a “Princess Diaries 3”? Yep.

Can you tell me more about that? I don’t think it would be nice.

There you go. I don’t want you to think you’re trapped here. I’m not trapped.

If you’re OK to go a little longer — I can leave this dinner party at any time. Have you read the book “Acts of Service”?

No. What is it? It’s a spicy book, but that’s a great line in it. A character finds herself exploring a situation that is uncomfortable but tantalizing to her, and she keeps thinking that I can leave this dinner party at any time I want.

Wait, does that mean you find this conversation uncomfortable but tantalizing? I’m finding this conversation really lovely.

Oh, good. I’m uncomfortable sometimes because I think you want me to reveal personal things, and I’m allergic to that. But I think that we’re having a wonderful time anyway.

In an ideal world, I always want people to be as personal as possible, but I also understand that that’s something that someone might not want to do, and that’s OK. I just find it hard to imagine that people are interested. I have a hard time making that leap.

You’ve also had the experience of people not being nice to you online. So I understand that it’s not as straightforward as I’m making it out. You’re right, and again, I find it hard to imagine that people would be interested in me. That’s one reason that I don’t know that I’m a very good celebrity. I don’t really know where the walls are between being intimate and narcissism and self-regard. And because of what I went through, I’m sensitive to the way it can come across. So I’d rather be cautious. The odd thing is that as soon as you stop recording this? All the details you want. But I’m probably not the best interview.

A few weeks later, I called Hathaway back to talk more about that caution.

I have a hunch that maybe you’re a ruminator. Is there anything about our conversation to this point that you’ve been thinking about? I had a slight word-choice remorse moment. You asked me what my goals are and I decided not to share them and the reason I gave was because I’d rather not have them “shredded.” That seemed a little harsh. I regretted that.

How would you rephrase it? I think I would rephrase it by saying it’s too tender. It’s a little less self-important.

Do you think it’s telling that your mind initially went to “shredded”? Oh, yeah. I think that’s some scar tissue. I understand why I said it, but it’s not actually reflective of how I feel. It’s what I fear, but not what I feel.

Something that I wanted to return to was: What are the things that used to stress you out so much? I’m just trying to make it more tangible. My goal is to heal it and not relive it. I’m not trying to be evasive. I don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about it because I feel that I found a window and I climbed through it. I work hard to just be present. Like I said, I’m more grateful. I’m more settled in myself. I’m less afraid of things not happening. You know, the time in which I was an emerging adult was a different time. We weren’t having the types of conversations that we were having now.

Can I tell you a blindingly obvious realization about my own hypocrisy? Tell me everything.

When I’m asking you to make things more tangible or to go deeper, I’m thinking about that in light of the exchange that we had about hips. You asked me a question and I got the heebie-jeebies. I thought, I’m not talking about that. No!

Is the feeling that I had the feeling that you have doing these things? You know what it does? It puts me in a defensive position. Not defensive in the sense that I feel attacked but defensive in the sense that it’s hard to say something revealing with a tape recorder there. So I feel like I become a more self-conscious, more neutral version of myself. I watch other actresses, and they’re so free, they’re so off the cuff. Not that they’re more revealing, they’re just — I don’t know. I don’t have a word for it. We don’t usually ask people such direct questions. That’s not the way conversations are usually built. Normally trust is established by sharing something about ourselves and you build up a mutual understanding. So a part of me just resists the form of this.

It’s totally weird! And also just slightly rude. [laughs] But that’s just me. I need to work on accepting that this is just the way this is built.

As someone who’s interested in the life that animates the work, I’m curious about what it’s like to be you . That interest is obviously rooted in an assumption that having some understanding of you outside your work matters in some way. Do you think it matters? I think I understand the question. That my life is somehow as interesting as my work?

Or that for people to have an understanding of who you are outside the work is meaningful. I don’t want to distract from it. Also, going back to the thing about direct questions and whether I get the heebie-jeebies, I’m just very protective. The press can be opportunistic. I have this awesome story about Nick [Galitzine] that I want to tell. It’s on the tip of my tongue, but I don’t want to tell it, because I haven’t asked him if it’s cool and I’m aware that he’d have to answer questions about it for the next three months to 30 years.

Like the way that, I’m sure somewhat annoyingly, you’re still being asked questions, including by me, about bad experiences you had on the internet a lifetime ago? No, no. I don’t find you annoying. I value what you do. Just because I’m not the most innately forthcoming person doesn’t mean I don’t think that this isn’t a wonderful forum. I’m just amazed by people who can just express themselves.

You express yourself in different ways. I love expressing myself through my characters. You know, also I think — no, nevermind.

“I think — nevermind.” Bingo! Give me another 25 years. Maybe I’ll relax a little more.

I’ll get back in touch. I want to end on something fun though.

Tell me a funny story. You know what? When I was making “The Idea of You,” I was so spoiled, staying in a beautiful house in Atlanta, Georgia, that was much larger than my needs. I would get home from work, and I’d be in this house by myself, and that was giving me the heebie-jeebies. I was trying to figure out, like, why was I feeling this so intensely? And I realized there was no laughter in the house. You have a big house like that, you need laughter. So I started to listen to stand-up specials. I would come home and put them on. I got really into Adam Sandler’s “100% Fresh.” As extraordinary, beloved and iconic as Adam Sandler is, I think he’s underappreciated. I can quote you every line from “Billy Madison” and “Happy Gilmore” and “The Wedding Singer.”

Let’s trade lines from his movies: “I eat pieces of [expletive] like you for breakfast!” “You eat pieces of [expletive] for breakfast?”

You got it! “If peeing pants is cool, then call me Miles Davis.” I think that’s the line. [Laughs.] “Shampoo is better. I go on first and leave the hair clean. No, conditioner is better. I leave the hair silky and smooth. Oh, really fool? Blech, blech, blech. ” Wait for it. “Stop looking at me, Swan!” [Hathaway’s Sandler quote here wasn’t exact, but it was close enough.]

Very good! I’m taking up your time now jabbering about Adam Sandler. But this is the part that I’m talking about: I feel much more comfortable talking about Adam Sandler, whom I’ve never met, than I do talking about what makes me tick. I just need to figure out how to practice.

I hope this has been part of that practice. Thank you very, very much. Be well. Stretch your hips out!
