As an Institution of National Importance, IIT Kanpur enjoys autonomous status under the MHRD. How is a Quarter defined?

How many modules do I need to complete under the eMasters Program?

You need to complete 12 modules under the eMasters Program. You will have the flexibility to choose a number of modules (minimum 0 and maximum 3) in each quarter.

What is the duration of the eMasters Program?

Participants can complete their eMasters degree in minimum 4 quarters (1 year) and maximum 12 quarters (3 years) depending on the number of modules they choose in each quarter. A maximum of 3 modules can be chosen and completed in each quarter.

Program Delivery

What is the delivery format for each module.

Each module will consist of synchronous and asynchronous learning components. Asynchronous learning including recorded videos, reading material, etc will be shared during the weekdays; whereas synchronous learning via live interactive sessions will be conducted during weekends.

What is the schedule and timings of live interactive sessions?

Live interactive sessions will be mostly held during the weekends. The exact schedule for the live interactive sessions for each module will be announced closer to the start of the module.

How many hours of classes will be held during the weekends?

There will be 1 hour of live interaction per module, and recorded lectures lasting 1.5-2 hours per week. In total, there will be 20-24 contact hours, including live interactive sessions and recorded lectures, per module per quarter.

Will the final exams be proctored?

Final exams for each module will be conducted online, then these will be proctored remotely. Exact details about the final exams will be shared closer to the start of the respective modules.

In which and how many centers should the physical exams be conducted?

The final exams will be conducted in at least 10 major cities across India. These would include New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Guwahati. Additional centers may be added subject to the number of participants from a particular region.

What is the passing percentage of marks for regular subjects and the project?

The exams are under the preview of the instructor. eMasters modules will have continuous evaluation throughout the quarter (assignment, quizzes, presentations etc.; milestones for projects) in virtual mode. Exams may include multiple sections, which may include objective as well as subjective sessions, with or without negative marking. The final exam will be conducted in physical mode.

The attendance policy may vary from one module to the other and will be enforced by the respective instructor. For genuine cases, instructors may allow absence provided prior intimation (for planned events) or some reason (in case of emergencies) is provided.

IIT Kanpur eMasters programme offers incentives in the form of discounts to employees of government, defense, PSU, MSME, and other corporate employees. The approved maximum waiver is listed below. However, the exact waiver is at the discretion of the concerned program coordinator in consultation with the HoD . Are there any scholarships?

You will be eligible for an exclusive scholarship of Rs 2,00,000. This scholarship will be adjusted against the fee payable from the 4th Quarter onwards.

Eligibility and Admission Process

What are the eligibility criteria to join the program.

Bachelor's degree (3/4 years program) for Financial Analysis, Business Finance, Public Policy, Quantitative Finance and Risk Management, Power Sector and Fintech Program or Bachelor's degree (4 years program) for all other program or a Master’s degree in appropriate discipline with at least 55% marks or 5.5/10 CPI + 2 years of work experience (an applicant need not be employed to be eligible). Candidates with relevant experience will be preferred.

How will the candidates be selected?

Shortlisting of candidates will be based on certain minimum criteria covering their overall academic performance and professional experience.

An admission test designed to thoroughly evaluate the applicant’s domain knowledge and competence may be conducted by IIT Kanpur. This may be followed by an interview conducted by a departmental committee.

What is the registration process?

An admitted student registers for the program once at the beginning of the program. Program registration is valid for three years. A student may apply to extend the program registration if all the program requirements are not completed. A student is further required to register for every module that’s taken in a quarter. Students must register during the registration period for the selected modules subject to credit load constraints. The registration process involves payments of fees for the quarter, fees for the modules opted, and clearance of any outstanding dues.

I have less than 55% in my 10th or 12th. Am I eligible?

Yes, applicants with less than 55% in 10th or 12th are eligible to apply for eMasters Degree. However, one needs to have at least 55% marks or 5.5/10 CPI in their Bachelor’s Degree (4 years program) or Master’s Degree to be eligible for the eMasters Degree.

I have completed a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree. Am I eligible?

A candidate with a 3-year bachelor's degree is eligible for a certain eMasters programmes.

I have less than 2 years of work experience. Am I eligible?

The minimum work experience required to pursue eMasters Degree is Two (2) years. Applicants with less than 2 years of experience will not be considered.

Curriculum and Evaluation

What is the program structure.

Each teaching unit in a quarter is defined as a module. A module entails 8 weeks of teaching followed by an examination period of 2 weeks. Each Module will carry 5 credits.

There are two types of modules- core and electives. A program may have a set of core modules defined that are compulsory and a set of modules as electives. A student must take all core modules and obtain a grade other than 'F' or 'E'. In addition, a student must take sufficient electives to fulfill the credit requirements for the program. For courses requiring pre-announced laboratory components, students may be required to be present on campus for a predefined period.

What is the duration of the program?

The minimum duration for the program is 4 quarters, and the maximum duration will be 12 quarters. The normal load per quarter is 15 credits, where each Module is 5 credits. Each module will be of 10 weeks’ duration: the first 8 weeks will be used for teaching and exams will be held in 9/10 weeks.

A student may opt for 0, 5, 10 or 15 credits in a quarter, depending on his/her professional workload. As long as they have registered for the program and paid the fee for each quarter, there is no minimum load requirement. The academic authorities may permit overload up to a maximum of 4 modules in exceptional circumstances.

What are the Graduation requirements?

A student should have completed 60 credits, earned a minimum CPI of 6, paid all the dues to the Institute and should have no pending cases of indiscipline against him/her to successfully graduate from the eMasters Program.

What will be the evaluation criteria for each module?

The module evaluation policies (attendance, grading, marks distribution etc.) will be announced prior to the commencement of a module in that particular quarter. The end-of-quarter proctored examination will be conducted is mostly held in online mode.

What is the grading policy?

Grades: Prior to 2022 Fourth Quarter, Seven letter grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F can be awarded. The correspondence between grades and points (on a 10-point scale) is as follows: A*: 10, A: 10, B: 8. C: 6, D: 4, E: 2. F: 0

In every registered module, a student is awarded one of the letter grades indicating his/her overall performance in the module and earns 5 credits except when the awarded grade is E or F in which case no credits are earned. If a student does not complete sufficient requirements for a module, the instructor may award grade I (Incomplete). The student must complete the module requirements within 2 quarters (in 4 quarters for the programme takes admission once in a year), after which the instructor will convert an I grade to a regular letter grade, failing which it will be automatically converted to an F grade.

A student getting a D or D+ grade in a module may be allowed to repeat it or substitute it with another module as suggested by the academic authorities. A student getting a D grade in a module may be allowed to repeat it.

The minimum CPI requirement for continuing in the program or for graduation will be 6.

Who has designed the curriculum?

The curriculum is designed and delivered by the faculty of concerned departments of IIT Kanpur. They may invite some guest faculties/ experts from reputed industries and institutions for the need of the programme.

PhD selections generally happen twice a year, once in May and once in December.

We also conduct walk-in interviews all through the year for exceptional PhD candidates. You have to apply for walk-in interviews.

1.6. When will I know the results of the admission tests?

We release the results typically within a week of the interview. The selected candidates will be listed on our website. We will also mail the candidates individually.

1.9. Do I need to bring anything with me other than the certificates?

For admissions held during winter, consider bringing warm clothes and blankets. Kanpur can get quite cold during the months of December and January.

2 MTech Admissions

There are two aspects where GATE score is considered - Admissions and Financial Assistantship .

Admissions: The requirement of GATE score is waived off for BTech graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in BTech.

Financial Assistantship: The requirement of a GATE score is waived for MTech applicants who are BTech graduates from IITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0.

GATE requirement is also waived if you are a sponsored or part-time student.

All candidates have to appear for a programming test, there will be no written test. Based on the programming test, shortlisted candidates can be called for interviews.

The syllabus for the test can be found here: Syllabus for the Written tests . The tests have a syllabus similar to as that of GATE and involves basics in Computer Science and Engineering.

We will not have an entrance test for MTech candidates for the Semester 2021-22-I.

There is no fixed number. 50-60 students join the MTech program every year. -->
