Life in Big Cities Essay

India has many metropolitan cities. Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, etc are some of them. But 80 per cent of our population lives in villages. A person from a rural area may find himself lost in a big city.

This is a correct attitude as it would make India modern and any foreigner coming to this land would no more think that we are a country of only snake charmers and elephants, as was the impression in the West until a few years ago.

In cities most people live like strangers A city dweller works from morning till night. Distances are long and to an appointment in a big city is difficult. People get stuck traffic jams and have to also stand for long hours waiting for the bus to arrive.

Facilities are limited everywhere and there are too many people to avail of them. This causes trouble at railway stations hospitals, trains, at cinema theaters, on buses and at petrol pumps.

The man has become materialistic and selfish in a big city. Nature is neglected and even if one wants to go near nature mother, he cannot. Pollution makes the air thick and city dwellers suffer from respiratory trouble.

Children get neglected because both their parents work and have long office hours. Despite all these factors, the city still attracts us as it promises a life of action and progress. There are unlimited opportunities. Anyone can grab opportunities and improve his lot, if he wants to.

Essay on Life in a Big City 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Life in a Big City Essay in English, suitable for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8.

There is a proverb, “God made the country and man made the town.” The proverb points out the contrast between life in the city and life in the village. Life in a village is simple and familiar with nature. Life in the city is fast and artificial. While India is primarily a land of villages, the country also has many towns or cities. Some of the cities are very big, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. They have several million inhabitants. Living in a major city has both benefits and inconvenience.

Life in a big city is a mixture of opposites. At one hand the buildings are very tall, and on the other hand, some slums are filthy. In big cities, wealth and poverty live side by side. People in cities die both due to starvation and overeating. There are elegant buildings amid smoky factories. We may claim that life in a big city is a mixture of pleasures and sorrows. There are all the comforts of life in a big city, but it is also full of bad thighs.

Advantages of Living in a Big City

The houses in big cities are tall. They have many storeys. The towers are multi-storied with lifts. It offers excellent educational facilities. There are elementary schools and high schools, technical colleges, engineering colleges and medical colleges. There are Universities in big cities too.

A big city has many markets. There are a large number of stores in each sector. The stores are well stocked. A fabric market has hundreds of fabric shops where the cloth of all kinds are available. In a big city, if a man has money, he can get everything he wants. The shops look very enticing due to the great lights. The roads are wide and driven by metal.

Transportation modes are simple, comfortable and fast. Rickshaws, busses, taxis and cars are within easy reach. The buses take you from one end of the town to the other on payment of a small fare. One can hire a taxi when he/she is in a rush. There are also other services within a major city. We can get timely medical support. Some hospitals have new medications and facilities. There are a good number of private doctors, too.

There are several other benefits of living in the city. There one finds chances for interacting with people from every nook and corner of the world as well as from other countries. One encounters people who have different ways of living, different ideas and different ways of thought. A person’s mind gets broadened in this way and perceptions are expanded.

Disadvantages of Living in a Big City

Big cities do have some drawbacks too. One cannot enjoy nature’s beauties in the city, just as one can do in villages. Everything in the cities is artificial. Man lives isolated from nature. As in a village, one cannot listen to the charms of birds and flowers, and cannot witness the beauty of sunrise and sunset.

Life in a big city is highly unhealthy. Black clouds always cover the sky. There is no chance for the people to breathe free, clean air, or enjoy the bright sunshine. Apart from this, food is also adulterated. People do not get pure ghee and milk. The products being sold in the market are unhealthy and unfit for human consumption.

In a big city, one has to face many difficulties. Life is pretty costly. People have to live pompously and with displays. Simple life like the village’s is unlikely. They are overcrowded and very little housing is available for residents. Tariffs are substantial, and the immigrants have much suffering to deal with. There are long distances and much time is spent travelling from one place to another.

Big City Life: Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

Disadvantages.

Historically, big cities were always centers of commerce and economic growth, offering greater security and job opportunities. To this day, leaving the desperation of the countryside for the success of a huge metropolis is a popular trope in culture and media. Although it is common to romanticize the lifestyle of big city dwellers, living in a large urban area comes at a high cost. Metropolitan residents do indeed enjoy a tremendous amount of career and quality of life advantages; however, it is not a secret that living in big cities is often associated with a lack of meaningful interpersonal interactions.

On the one hand, big city life offers excellent opportunities for economic growth. According to Loschiavo (2021), “urban concentration enhances productivity, which, in turn, spurs national economic growth” (p. 5). Due to their sheer massiveness, big metropolitan areas provide their inhabitants with a greater number of open vacancies and increased competitive salaries. In addition, dwellers of such cities benefit from easy access to various quality-of-life services, such as different specialty stores, pharmacies, hospitals, restaurants, and entertainment options. Massive city residents enjoy the best medical service and numerous means of mass transportation.

On the other hand, big city dwellers suffer from a lack of meaningful interpersonal relationships. Loschiavo (2021) claims that “big-city dwellers are exposed to unceasing external contacts with numbers of persons that are nevertheless impersonal and transitory” (p. 10). According to his research, people in larger cities tend to create relationships to meet their needs rather than form meaningful mutual connections. Moreover, a competitive environment in areas of large economic growth contributes to the dissolution of cooperation and thus leads to increased residents’ unhappiness.

In conclusion, life in a big city has advantages and disadvantages. Large urban areas offer better job opportunities and easy access to the best possible medicine, transport, and leisure. However, the competitive and transitory nature of metropolises contributes to the decadence of cooperation and interpersonal relationships. Although big cities offer numerous career-related opportunities, those aspiring to move there must be prepared for lack of satisfaction in their personal life.

For this IELTS essay writing topic, you can either agree or disagree with the statement. That being said, it is critical to remember that the paragraph must be at least 250 words.

However, the 40-minute time constraint often stresses students out, and they find it challenging to think of an answer and pick a side quickly. So, here are a few pointers to make 'life in a big city' paragraph writing easier.

  • Read the topic thoroughly.
  • Take the time to pick a stance.
  • Use varied vocabulary.
  • Structure the sentences correctly.
  • Maintain a formal tone and avoid casual phrases.
  • Divide the writing into paragraphs.
  • Check and re-check for any incorrect spellings or grammar.

Question: Many individuals think that living in a large metro city is harder, while others think it is a practical choice. Discuss both perspectives and share your own.

Are metro cities better or not? This has been an ongoing debate between city-dwellers and those living in towns. Rightfully so. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. A small town has better quality air and far less pollution than a city. Small town residents have the luxury of walking out of their homes to absolute tranquillity instead of the noise and bustle of a big city. Moreover, towns are much closer to nature and allow you to take a breather from the chaos of a concrete jungle.

However, with stores on every corner and excellent accessibility to entertainment and the arts, living in a city is much more exciting. Moreover, cities offer job opportunities that would not be available in smaller towns. This is often also the main reason people move to a metropolitan area. Further, with quality institutions, cities allow people access to better quality education. In addition, cities also have spaces that offer greenery and serenity in parks and gated communities. People do not have to go hunting for it in smaller towns. Nevertheless, if one still wishes to enjoy the peace of a town, they can always take one of the many available modes of transportation to the nearest town.

Like everything in this world, living in a city has pros and cons. However, the population in cities alone highlights its many advantages. Therefore, based on my personal analysis and experiences, it is much better to make a good living and enjoy the conveniences of a large metro city than to stay in a small town or hamlet.

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Question: Many people believe living in a major metropolitan city is tough, while others believe it is more convenient. Examine both points of view and then express your own.

Metro cities often house the larger part of the population in any country. They have great opportunities for education and employment, allow people easy access to entertainment and house shops such as departmental stores, clothing retailers, and even exotic marts at almost every corner. There are restaurants serving all types of cuisines, people speaking different languages, and varied modes of transportation that can take you anywhere.

Regardless, cities are overcrowded. It is a fact that the air quality is below par, and quietness is often a luxury. Most people struggle to make ends meet due to the high prices of goods and skyrocketing rent. Besides, the busy life in the metro is often a huge source of stress and anxiety for most. Smaller towns, on the other hand, allow their people to breathe clean air, eat nutritious, uncontaminated food and enjoy a healthy social life. Neighbours often greet each other and come together to celebrate and, in time, become family. Moreover, with the advancement of technology, small towns hold just as much potential in terms of employment. The only struggle is the accessibility to good digital connectivity since they do not have as many signal towers as a metro.

Nevertheless, having considered the pros and cons of both, I realize that the advantages of living in a smaller town far outweigh that of living in a city. In fact, if a bit of disconnection affords one the luxury of living a healthy and quiet life, a small town is the way to go. After all, a city may have accessibility and options, but towns allow you to build a sustainable and holistic life.

Speech on Life in A Big City in English For Students

Big cities are also called metropolitan cities where life has a commanding social as well as economic influence. A big city is surrounded by many small towns and villages nearby from where people, especially youth go to fulfill their dreams. Many people fulfill their dreams of getting a job, having financial security and leading a stable life. In this article, we will see that the Speech On Life In A Big City can be presented in varying ways. It can be a Long Speech On Life In A Big City or a Small Speech On Life In A Big City.

Long And Short Speech on Life In A Big City

Long speech on life in a big city:.

This form of Speech On Life in a Big City is helpful for students in grades 8-12 where students can speak in detail to convey the essence of the topic.

Good morning everyone, respected Principal, Teachers, and my dear friends. I am grateful for this opportunity to speak about Life In A Big City. It helped me get a deeper insight into the lives people lead in a big city and I hope you can get to understand too.

Life in a Big City is a dream of many, and it has been a dream of mine too. A big city has other small towns and villages in their outskirts and often people from this smaller part migrate to the big cities. As people lack opportunities for growth in their field of interest or earn money they often leave their small towns in search of better jobs and to earn a living.

It is true that many dreams are fulfilled in the big city, on the other hand, many dreams are shattered in the big cities too. Life in a big city demands a very different attitude in one person to survive, get through or to make it big.

Everyone in a big city lives a competitive life. Be it students who are competing to score better, submit assignments on time and also excel in extracurricular at the same time. Their parents and adults lead busier lives and work harder to make a decent living and pay a hefty sum for the rents and cover the loans.

Certainly in the big cities, roads are better and the traffic is also more, buildings are better, a child has the choice of many career opportunities and explore their hobbies and other interests, the education system is wholesome and they do not lack job opportunities.

There are so many companies that provide jobs, and are flourishing in their respective fields and sectors. It has room for every kind of industry to be established and be a success whether it is hospitality, Information technology, sports or fashion. And everyone is trying to enter in one or the other. They enjoy travelling in luxurious cars, and have access to the latest technological developments.

This fast-paced life robs them of the time one wants to spend with their family, friends and loved ones. They also lack to enjoy the pleasure for which they work doubly hard to earn. They do not enjoy the little joys of nature because big cities do not have an abundance of it.

The competitive world and lifestyle, often stresses them mentally and physically. Their life is often draining as they tend to live on schedules and not according to their heart’s desire. Their commitments are the priority, so the big city life is not for everyone. It requires a brave and a strong person to commit to leading such a life to chase dreams, money and fame. To attain success in a big city one has to sacrifice a lot, and sometimes people cannot make that choice so their dreams are unfulfilled and shattered.

In conclusion, I would Like to add if one intends to lead a big city life they should also be ready to make sacrifices and only keep working towards their dreams and goals without getting bogged down in the journey.

Short Speech on Life In A Big City:

This is a Small Speech On Life In A Big City that will be helpful for students in grades 4-7 as it provides information about the topic in a short form with simple words.

Good morning everyone, respected Principal, teachers and students I Abc (mention your name) today have the opportunity to speak on the topic of life in a big city. Life in a big city is a demanding one, it compels you to be on your toes all the time. One is always seeking opportunities to grow and be more successful. Growth is expected from one individual in every circle of life, professional, economical, social and personal. Balancing all that is draining.

The Big city though does provide better opportunities right from the start, better roads, transportation, schools, education system, career opportunities, access to luxurious items be it cars or phones. And all sorts of industries flourish in a big city because there is a demand for it all, whether IT, or entertainment.

The lack is often experienced in other areas of life that small towns and villages get to enjoy. Nature at its best, a stroll around the garden, spending time with family and friends. Enjoying festivals and spending quality time with oneself and loved ones. Big cities fulfill the dreams of many people but in the process also rob them of little pleasures and joy.

To sum it up, if you want to make it big in life and have a thriving dream job and career you have to be mentally strong and competitive enough to ride the ladder to success. It is not an easy journey and takes a lot of time, effort and sacrifices.

Speech on Experiencing Life In A Big City

Good morning teachers and dear students

I'm excited and just as nervous to give a speech today. I have been in this school for almost 12 years and I have been in this city since the day I was born, which is 17 years ago.  I have seen this small town has turned into a big city and things have changed dramatically. Good changes are always welcome but few changes get you upset . Don’t get me wrong, life in a big city is more convenient, as there are many advantages here, such as very easy transportation, easy online marketing, increased potential for business projects, and increased potential, quality higher institutes etc, but life becomes a bit artificial because people are mostly far from nature here. Due to the tall buildings, it is rare to see the rising sun and the starry sky at night. With the increase in the number of vehicles, noise, industries, pollution has started to increase. Things are readily available in big cities, but people rarely value what is readily available. I also remember the kids in our school a few years ago, they were disciplined and obedient, but now the children are ignorant. However, knowledge is increasing with access to various forms of knowledge such as televisions, mobile phones, laptops, and so on. These devices are just as harmful to young children. These sources of knowledge move away from books, magazines and newspapers and are not well suited for children.

Life in a big city is very attractive, but weekends can be spent in malls, grand theaters, discos and pubs, so these infrastructures create a huge gap between relationships. People don't spend time together. They want to see the status of strangers on social media rather than love their loved ones. Elderly parents sit at home alone, and teenagers are busy posting emotional and philosophical dialogues on social media.

I mourn the situation today because I feel that living in a big city is wrong and I am not even aware that we are living an artificial life. Most people want to live a luxurious life in a big city. In the silence of material happiness, people overlook the true happiness we encounter almost every day in the form of rain,  breeze, sunshine, sky and flowers in the park, and many others. You can also see that many factories are open in big cities. This can be beneficial as it is easier to get things at a cheaper price. These factories are just as harmful to the ecosystem. Despite their disadvantages, there are also benefits of city life as there are people from all over the country who are connected and mixed with their culture. Every day you learn something new from your neighbor. I am not against city life, but I would like you to realize how to value things and people. You need to take good care of your relatives, friends, teachers and elders. You have to play a lot outdoors, run, and breathe in the fresh air. Use electronic gadgets only when needed to collect important information. Respect your elders and love your youth. Only then is life in a big city worth living.

“i’ve been in many of them and to some extent, i would have to say this: if you’ve seen one city slum you’ve seen them all. ” – (spiro).

Gone are the days when man’s life was confined to a certain locality. He lived all his life in a village or in a small town. Because of modern facilities, distances do not matter at all, and the world has become a global village. According to modern economists, one should live in the capital of a country or, at least, in a metropolitan city. This will provide him with ample opportunities for his over-all growth.

A big city caters to the academic, social, economic and various other needs of a modern man. There are more and better chances for education in a big city as there are numerous educational institutes and libraries in it. There are also better opportunities for economic activity in a big city. There are a number of openings here for a man to rise in life. There are also a lot of opportunities here for enjoyment and entertainment.

A big city has also its demerits. Nothing is perfect in this world. Perfection lies only in God. There is no peace and relaxation here as we find in the country life or in a small town. There is more loneliness and alienation in a big city, and as a result, there are more psychological diseases and mental problems. People here live a very hectic life, and they are caught in a vicious circle of getting and spending. Big city life is so fast that months and years pass away like days. Leisure is rare and people do not have time to stay and stare. The world is too much with them.

“City life is millions of people being lonesome together.” – (Henry David)

A man living in a big city is quite often away from nature. There is a saying that a city never sleeps. So, a big city dweller never has a chance to see a sky full of stars or the beautiful scene of sun rising and sunset. The lifestyle here is often unnatural and artificial. Narrow streets, scarcity of space and overflowing drains make life in a big city problematic. One experience here all kinds of pollution, like noise pollution, water pollution, air pollution and atmospheric pollution. We can say that life in a big city is a mixed blessing. Although there are more and better chances for economic growth and social uplifting for man here, it is at the cost of his spiritual peace and moral well-being. People live a mechanical life here and they are often included in cut-throat competition. They struggle hard to surpass others in their mad race of better lifestyle.

“Man’s course begins in a garden, but it ends in a city.” (Alexander)

Life in a big city is totally different from life in a small town. Modern network of banks, government and commercial institutes and many multinational companies are found only in a big city. So, big city life is inevitable for economic and political activities in order to keep pace with the modern world.

To put the pre-going discussion, in a nutshell, it can safely be opined that life in a big city has its own merits and demerits. It is a type of rose with thorns. These thorns disintegrate the very soul of our social fabric because most people have their own axe to grind.

“Life in a big city, though curse we may call it, i s indispensable to survive in the modern era.”

Advantages of City Life

Life is full of activities in a big city. A city is a centre for all types of education. It is a vast built-up area where a large number of people live and work. It is a center of trade, medical facilities, business, and recreation. Here we find the high building, vast roads, big parks, crowded bazaars and government offices. The population increases during the daytime and people remain busy the whole day. People staying nearby villages and towns come to the city for performing different necessary tasks.

Life in a big city starts early in the morning. many school buses carrying school children can be seen playing on roads. School children dressed in their uniform can be seen on the roads walking or waiting for buses. Some are seen moving on scooters and in cars. Then a long queue of office workers can be seen at the bus stops. Some go by their own vehicles and others go by buses or trains. Some people use cycles and auto-rickshaws to go to their destination. People gather to the market to buy vegetables and household goods. With every passing hour, the traffic goes on increasing. The shops and the market places remain crowded till the evening hours.

In cities, there are a lot of educational facilities. There are various institutions for every kind of education. There are Medical and Engineering Colleges. There are institutes of Law, Fashion Designing and Interior Designing. Due to this fact, people in urban areas are more qualified and educated.

“A great city is that which has the greatest men and women.” (Whitman Walt)

“I have affection for a great city. I feel safe in the neighbourhood of man, and enjoy the sweet security of the streets.” (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Disadvantages of city life.

Though the benefits of the city are many, there are also certain demerits of this life. A city is full of smoke, dirt, dust, garbage, gases and foul smell. People living in big cities no longer breathe the fresh air and see any green, open spaces. The loud noise of vehicles and factories has created troubles everywhere. Though the industrialization has provided several business benefits but it has also added to the pollution problems.

We are in Danger of making our cities places where business goes on but where life, in its real sense, is lost.” (Huber Humphrey)

A city is always populous. Tall buildings and big houses take up space in a city. There is less greenery in the cities compared to towns and villages. The roads are always full of vehicles. Here, everyone finds himself in a hurry and worry. Neighbors live like strangers. One hardly knows who the next one’s door neighbor is.

“A city is a large community where people are lonesome together” (Herbert Preshow)

However, the above-mentioned advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Cities provide a lot of employment opportunities. Development takes place faster in cities. A City broadens the outlook of an individual. It offers scope in many areas. Urban life provides man with a lot of chances of progress. It is so generous that it accommodates everyone. One does not remain idle in a city. Thus, cities add to the economic development of the nation.

Essay on City Life Vs Village Life for Students and Children

500+ words essay on city life vs village life.

Village life reflects the rural lifestyle and city life shows the urban lifestyle. Life in both rural and urban areas has its own plus points and problems. One is quite different from each other. Traditionally, India is a predominantly rural country as Mahatma Gandhi had said, “The real India lives in villages”. Though India is mainly a land of villages, there are many cities as well in the country.  Life in these big cities is quite different from life in a village. Let us consider, in brief, life in a big city and point out some of its important advantages and disadvantages.

essay on city life vs village life

Comparison: City life Vs Village life

The facility of education.

In big cities, there are good arrangements for education. The big college even universities are available.  There are also a very large number of school both government and private in the big city.  These arrangements do not exist in small towns and villages.

Medical Facility

Cities also provide sufficient medical facilities.  Almost in every city, there are good hospitals in which the poor get free medicines and treatment. Many qualified doctors are also there to serve the sick and the suffering. Indeed lack of such medical arrangement is the main drawback of villages.

Amusement and Recreation

Cities also provide many opportunities for amusement and recreation. In every city, there are a number of cinema houses and multiplexes, where we can enjoy with family. Also, a number of restaurants and hotels are available for better food of variety. There are also many parks and gardens where we can enjoy the best natural beauty. Villages are always lacking such facilities.

The Opportunity of Employment

The most important advantages of cities are the availability of huge opportunity for employment . They are centers of trade and commerce as well as offices of many multinational companies . Persons with different qualifications can easily find jobs to suit them.  In villages, employment is available mostly in farming. Due to farming, only seasonal jobs are available to a large population in villages.

Mixed Culture

Cities are having a variety of people from various cultures. But real India and its customs are highly visible in villages.

Natural Environment

It is fact villages are always natural due to be their self-creation by nature. On the other hand, most cities are manmade. Hence the natural environment of villages is their main attraction. In villages only we may have the charms of birds and flowers or the beauty of the day-dawn.

Pollution and Adulteration

City life is extremely unhealthy due to air pollution, water pollution, and noise pollution . The people are not getting fresh air to breathe or the clear sky to enjoy the sunshine. Also, food in the cities is dirty, unhealthy and adulterated. The villages are very much away from such drawbacks.

Population and Other Issues

In city life is very costly. People have to live with a lot of pomp and show. A simple life as in the villages is almost impossible in the city. Besides, the cities are over-crowded and it is very hard for people to get suitable accommodation. People in the city do not have much sympathy with others even with neighbors. The sympathy and close interdependence which is marked in the village’s life is entirely lacking in the city.

Thus, life in villages and in cities presents two contrasting pictures. There are positive as well as negative aspects of both. Therefore it is up to the individual to make the most of it irrespective of the rural or urban setting that one lives in. I, myself, like to live in a village in the close vicinity of a modern city so that I can enjoy the pleasures both of the city and the village.

Essay No. 2

Life in a Big City

No doubt, life in a big city is very hot and full of glamour but the dark side behind it is far more fearful. The noise and the bustle, the smoke and dust, the  air of haste and unrest bewilder a countryman. A man who lives in the country finds city life most unpleasant. Accustomed to all his days to take life easily he feels himself an alien. He loses his hearings amidst the unceasing noise and feels in a state of high tension.

But a man born and bred in the city has different feelings altogether. He is accustomed to this crowd and “busy hum of men” and he makes quick adjustments with the problems and complications each day brings forth before him. Life to him is an exciting adventure, full of novelty and unexpectedness at every turn.

With the rising unemployment in rural areas and more and more people getting good education, the population in big cities is increasing day by day. More and more people come to cities for opportunities in business, higher education, jobs and specialist medical aids. The growing presence of multinationals in cities like Delhi, Bombay, Kolkata and the like attracts thousands of youth to seek employment in them. The expansion of business opportunities is also  inviting lots of people  to the cities. Thus the hustle and bustle, noise, pollution is increasing day by day in cities. The big cities are expanding day by day on all sides where hundreds of housing colonies are developing along with many business establishments. The older residents of these cities prefer to settle in outside areas to escape noise and pollution of the main city. In spite of all the problems of the cities people continue struggling all their lives to work in this environment of busy hum. Everyone is busy. None has time to even talk to his neighbour or relative. Everyone lives his individual life. The social contacts are absent. The lust for money is increasing day by day. The value of properties has gone sky- up. There is no value of life. Accidents happen everywhere every day. This is a mad- rush. People aspire for a whiff of fresh air. People have no time to take rest. They cannot sleep soundly because of the tension of work and competition. Everyone does his work in the hardest competition truth and  honesty is very rare in big cities. You are liable to be cheated at every stage , so you also prefer to cheat others. This is mad – race for false prestige and power. Everyone wants to reach the top by hook or crook. Delicacies are rampant in big cities. Duplicate of everything is available. Duplicate medicines, clothes, toys, machines, watches, cameras, spare parts, electric and electronic equipment are available everywhere. It is very difficult to find out the genuine and reject the duplicate.

In spite of all this  there is a strange attraction of life in cities which keeps people stick to them. Besides, the opportunities of employment and bread – earning are easily available if you are person to work and show you excellence, the big cities provide big careers for the diligent professionals. They reach the top as the opportunities are many.

Life in a Big City Speech 1

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Friends – A Very Warm Welcome to all of you!

On the occasion of speech giving ceremony in our school, I would like to thank my teachers for choosing me to speak on the topic life in a big city. I believe they chose me from class 12 th batch as I was the only person who shifted to this school in 12 th standard. The reason being that my mother was transferred to Delhi from a small little town named Cochin in Kerala where I spent my entire childhood.

The experience and the initial stages of a big city like Delhi were dreadful especially being a South Indian and belonging to a conservative family. Let me share my experiences with you all, so that you can get an insight on how people moving from small places to big cities feel when they initially come here. Before shifting to Delhi I always had the fear which was about living in India’s capital and fashion hub and not being able to “blend-in”. As you all know Delhi and Mumbai are considered to be important centres of fashion designing and manufacturing in India, followed by Bangalore, Hyderabad and other large cities but not Cochin.

Cochin, where I lived, is a city and port in the State of Kerala. The culture of the city can be termed as predominantly Indian. While it had played host to number of high profile fashion shows and the people now are increasingly fashion-conscious, moving away from the traditional Kerala wear to western casual clothing, yet, the town has not yet reached the total transformational level as compared to the Northern India due to various traditional beliefs and values still held by most Keralites.

The dresses of the people of Cochin are evidence of simple lifestyle of the Malayali people-the people from ‘God’s own country’. Therefore, in general, and what I believed that South-Indian City girls are not as funky/stylish as their North Indian counterparts. I therefore had to plan something to avoid being called book smart, nerdy and badly dressed.

In spite of my preparedness, the first day when I entered this school for my admission I felt quite inadequate. I was desperate to get out of my small town plainness. The first thing I decided was to cut my long hair – my crowning glory as it was called in Cochin as I felt it gave me a typical South Indian look! While living in Kochi I would never have even dared to think about foregoing it. For carving a niche for myself and trying to fit in with friends I too equipped myself with a more fashionable wardrobe which has set of branded clothes and yes, a smart phone!

My own experience has been a clear example of how people coming from small towns and the States get influenced by the fashion savvy Delhi culture and forget their traditional culture to try and fit in the mainstream society. This is what big cities do to individuals like me. I have changed but to become a better personality and a positive person.

Thank you Delhi for making me a changed person!

Life in a Big City Speech 2

Good Morning Everyone! Thank You for being present here!

Being born and brought up in a beautiful city of Dehradun, comfortable life and pleasant weather, I had to shift to Delhi to pursue my dreams of entering into teaching profession in this school. For me living in a place surrounded by nature and then shifting to a big city which is completely cut off from nature and has a busy life was utterly difficult. For a few days I couldn’t adjust to the climatic conditions but I could only sustain myself here due to my passion for teaching and my ultimate dream destination.

Students like you would understand my plight, as individuals in big cities are often in hurry for their work and that can be judged through the traffic jams in Delhi. You all notice your parents every day in the morning, which is considered as the rush hour in every Indian household, they don’t even have time to complete their breakfast with patience and calmness. This is the main reason why people during holidays visit hilly areas to enjoy so that they can take a break from their busy schedules.

We all work like slaves with a monotonous lifestyle which ultimately makes us machines. People from small towns shift to big cities for luxuries which are equally present in all metropolitan cities. They are well developed and have recreational facilities and this is what attracts people from small cities. This may not be the only reason as there are individuals like me who want to follow their dreams and come here for better employment opportunities which are not found in small cities. The education system both at primary and higher level provides you with ample opportunities.

Despite disadvantages there are merits too of city life as there are people from every corner of the country with whom one can connect and get mixed with their culture. You learn something new every day from your next door neighbor who are the only help when you are in need. But in small cities you have nature all around you which you can take in with freshness in air quality and no pollution.

Aspect of competition in big cities is a major issue as everybody is in a race to make their child as brilliant as possible, but, you will quite agree with me that in this rat race they forget about their child’s dreams. Thus, city life has its own disadvantages and advantages. It sustains many individual lives and provides a source of livelihood to many strugglers coming to big cities to make it big in life. They offer something to every person despite belonging to different cultures and backgrounds. For these many reasons those who even dislike big cities are drawn close to it.

At the end, you need to make a choice what is right and what is wrong for your life. If you need to follow your dreams, you need to come to big cities and at least it has offered me a lot many opportunities in life but I still cannot forget my childhood days. But one day or the other one needs to grow up and give direction to one’s life!

Life in a Big City Speech 3

Good Morning Teachers and Dear Students – Welcome to the 25 th anniversary of our school, it’s an honor to address you all for the 25 th year in a row!

While I am excited to deliver speech today, I am equally nervous and anxious. I have been in this school for nearly 22 years now; the time when the school was just three years old. Year after year, I have seen several students who have studied here, passed out from our school and leading a respectable life. In these 22 years, I have also seen this small town getting transformed in a big city and things have changed drastically. While the change has been a welcome move, most of the changes make me feel sad and miserable.

While things are conveniently available in big cities, people seldom value the things that are easily available. Also, I remember the kids of our school 22 years ago, they were disciplined and obedient, but now kids are ignorant and rude. They are growing up to be more knowledgeable though because of the access to various forms of knowledge such as television, mobile, laptops, etc. these gadgets are equally harmful for small kids. These sources of knowledge are doing less good to kids as they are getting away from books, magazines and newspapers.

Life in a big city is highly attractive though as you can spend your weekends in a mall, lavish theatres, Discs and Pubs but these infrastructures are also creating a huge gap amongst relations. People don’t spend time with each other; they would rather like status of strangers on social media, instead of liking their near and dear ones. Elderly parents sit alone at home and youngsters are more engrossed posting emotional and philosophical dialogues on social media.

I feel, life in a big city is fake than natural and I lament the situation today as we are not even realizing that we are living an artificial life. Almost everyone wants to own a luxurious life in big cities and in the quench of materialistic happiness, people overlook the real happiness that we come across almost every day in the form of rain, gentle breeze, sunshine, open skies, blooming flowers in the parks, and many more. I also see that many factories have opened in big cities; this may be advantageous as you can get things easily at cheaper prices; these factories are equally harmful to the eco system.

Friends, I am not against the city life, but I want to make you all aware, especially the young students to understand the pros and cons of city life. You must value your relations, your friends, teachers and elders. You must play a lot in the open ground, run and breathe fresh air. Use gadgets only when it is needed to gather important information. Talk politely with everyone; respect your elders and love your youngsters, only then the life in a big city would be worth living.

Life in a Big City Speech 4

Respected Principal Sir, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends – First of all, welcome to the annual function of our school!

As most of you know, I have come from a small town and I am extremely proud of having been given an opportunity to deliver the speech today.

When my father got transferred to this city, I was very excited because I always dreamt to live a life in a big city. It’s been almost 6 months now and my thrill and excitement has cooled down completely.

Though life in a big city is more convenient, life here somewhat is artificial because people here are almost away from the nature. Due to the tall buildings, people can seldom see the rising and setting sun or an open sky full of stars in the night. However, I find many advantages too, like transportation is very easy here. Back in my village, there was only one bus that would run in between the village and the nearest town and the bus would run early in the morning at 6. If you miss that bus, you would either have to arrange for your own transport or you must wait for 1 whole day to catch that bus.

Things are easily available here, but people are always running here; very few people are seen happy as they are always chasing something or the other. People in big city rarely enjoy life; they don’t laugh out loud and have no time for each other. Despite waking up early in the morning, only few people go out on a walk as most of them are busy living mechanical life. Everybody wants to achieve success, but no one is enjoying small happiness in their lives. They work all day and night; come back tired; get engrossed with their respective mobiles or laptops, eat dinner and sleep down.

Also, pollution has submerged big cities and this is one of the biggest reasons people here are unfit and unwell. Due to lack of time, people are mostly on unhealthy diet and always in a hurry to swallow food. I feel sad to see that young boys and girls seldom play in the park; they don’t spend quality time with each other. I am staying in this city for almost 6 months now but I haven’t been able to make even a single friend. I always go in the park in the evening and morning but I don’t see many people coming to the park.

Though, I miss my village very much, life in a big city is also attractive. The government is trying its best to make the city green and beautiful. We must give rest to our gadgets and start enjoying the natural beauty for a healthy and meaningful life.

I love this school very much as I get support from the Principal and the teachers; I hope to make many friends soon so that I can play with them in the ground, fall and get up again and enjoy my life to the fullest.
