How to Set your Fashion Career Goals [and achieve them]

Before starting reading this article or listening to the audio version, I want you to take a piece of paper or open your iPhone notes. Use whatever you want but write down the things when I’ll tell you to do so.

In this post and podcast episode, I talk about something that is really important and that will make the difference in your life and career: setting up your fashion career goals.  You can listen to the podcast episode on Apple Podcast , Spotify or SoundCloud or you can keep reading.

First of all, why you should set goals for your fashion career?

Goals give us a sense of purpose and are inspiring. They make us happier and more satisfied.

When you set a goal you feel like you’re living your life, that your working on something that you love, that you have a purpose.

If we don’t set goals we spend our days waiting for something to happen or hoping that sooner or later something will change.

Let me tell you something, hope is not a strategy. You cannot hope to get that dream job, to get that promotion, to change your job…You cannot wait for the universe to align for you and that one day something great will happen to you.

Amazing things happen to those who work hard not to those who wait for things to casually happen. Hope is not a strategy.

You can’t just live waiting and hoping for things to happen because you waste time and miss opportunities. Days, weeks and months pass and it’s like life is living you instead of the other way around. You need to take charge of your life and your career. 

You need to set goals. 

What is a goal?

A goal is a dream, but with a plan! And the plan is actionable and that’s what makes a goal more powerful than a dream.

How do you set your fashion career goals?

Think about the things that make you happy and excited and about something you want to achieve. Think about a dream you have.

Do you want to get promoted, get your first internship, get a job at your favorite company, get those clients as a stylist, move to NYC to work in Fashion PR?

Once that you have visualized your dream, you need to turn it into a goal by developing a plan and taking actions to make it a reality. 

A  goal needs to be actionable which means that you need to have a plan for it. In order to associate a plan and actions to your goal, you need to be specific with it.

If you just say: “I want to get a job in fashion”, this is not specific and defining actions becomes more complicated and also achieving it.

“I want to get a job in Fashion PR at a luxury company” or “I want to get a job as a buyer in New York” these are specific goals.

Now I want you to think for a minute about your fashion career goal.

Do you want to intern this summer? Do you want to get a promotion? Do you want to change your job? Do you want to get that PR job? 

Take that piece of paper, notebook, iPhone notes now and write down your goal as it’s the present : so, for example, I’m the PR at a luxury brand in Milan. Take some minutes to think about your goal, be specific and write it down before continuing reading this.

Ok now you have your goal on the top of that post-it, notebook or piece of paper, you need to think about the steps to get closer to where you want to go. 

Writing down a plan helps you to know exactly what you have to do.

Do you want to write for a fashion magazine? Well, your plan could include writing a couple of articles to send along with your cv and cover letter when applying. Or starting a blog to have something to show to the editor. Or going to fashion panels and meet the editor and ask for the contact. Your plan could include also finding your favorite editors on LinkedIn and connecting with them. 

Take again that page or iPhone note and write down at least 6 things you can think of that will help you get close to your ultimate goal.

These are some examples of activities you should write down:

  • Go to networking events
  • Book a flight to go to the job interview
  • Find an apartment
  • Find the dream job online
  • Create a CV and a cover letter
  • Find the recruiters email

Take again some minutes to write down 6 necessary actions you need to take in order to achieve your goal.

Ok, now that you have a list of actions,  read them all over again. Of all the 6 actions, there is only one that is absolutely necessary to start with. Going to networking events is important, but for sure it’s not the first and absolutely necessary step to get a job in fashion. Find out which is the one thing you absolutely need, the one you need to start with. Probably it will be to start by finding the job? Or start from your CV and portfolio? 

Now that you know where you have to start from, think about what resources you already have and those you need to get.

Do you need to take a course to improve your skill? Do you need to set up a LinkedIn profile? Do you need to refresh your CV?

Let’s assume you have to start with your CV. Where do you start to create your CV?

Will you use a template? Will you take the course Break into the fashion industry ? Will you design and write it yourself? Once you have your starting point, just do it.

Do it and if the things you’re trying don’t work, you try something else. And if you fail, you try again. Keep going, keep your destination in mind and don’t forget that mistakes are a huge learning opportunity. You can change and try new things. 

For example, almost all the students who enroll in  break into the fashion industry tried themselves first to apply for jobs and then, when their strategies were not working they decide to try something different and have enrolled in the course. You need to adjust along the way. 

The overnight success doesn’t exist. You get results from the actions you take consistently, not from something you do once or a few times.

It happened that some students of the course got a job when they applied for just 4 jobs , but most of them have seen the results because every single day they show up and apply the right way to many jobs never giving up.

I got a message from a girl who asked me: Are there people that take your course and still don’t find a job?

Well, that is a course, I teach you strategies, I give you CV, Cover Letter and email templates and resources to use but if you don’t actually put your own work behind it, then you won’t see the result. Watching the lessons won’t bring you anywhere if you don’t apply them consistently. This is for everything in life. It’s not enough to get your gym membership, or hire a personal trainer. If you want to get fit you need to put your hard work, you need to workout every single day. That’s the same for Break into the Fashion Industry and all the courses you take: you need to do the work.

It’s like when people attend a prestigious fashion school and then pretend to get a job in fashion just because they have paid a lot. If you don’t work hard, if you’re not proactive, then you won’t get what you want. 

 The tools and the resources we get help us to continue on this journey to reaching for our goals. 

Now let’s go back to your page, read again all the actions you have written down and after that you have the first one, assign a number and an order to the others. What is the second step? And the third?

Do it! Step by step to your end goal. 

I want you to write down every single morning first thing first in the morning your goal 10 times. 

I am a stylist who works in Los Angeles and dress celebrities.

I am the buyer of a department store

I am a designer and I have my own fashion brand

I am a web merchandiser of a luxury e-commerce

Write down your fashion career goal 10 times every single morning from today.

You’re now probably thinking that writing it down every single morning 10 times seems something crazy, but trust me that it’s necessary to maintain your focus. Writing them down and not taking actions, of course, won’t change your life, but writing them down motivates you and reminds you every single day to take actions. Writing them down will make your unconscious work and act for you! It’s hard to attain a goal if you don’t actually sit down and define what you want to accomplish. It’s almost likely you’re going to fail if you don’t do it.

When setting up your fashion career goals, don’t be afraid to dream big, the top companies, the best jobs.

I had a consultation with a student the other day and she was about to apply for a visual merchandising role. She knew she wanted to work in communication so I asked her, why she was applying for a visual merchandising job if it’s not bringing her to the goal?

I asked her “Why do you want to waste precious time of your life getting a job in visual merchandising when you can do a PR internship and be already one step closer to your dream of working in communication?

She said she was applying to that visual merchandising job just because it seemed easy to get because it didn’t have lots of requirements.

Keep a focus on what you want to get and do the actions that will take you there. Don’t lose your focus.

Having a plan written down with the actions you need to take will help you get to your end goal. If you want to work in PR and you’ve just graduated, one of the actions of your plan is to get a pr internship and then turn a pr internship into a full-time job.

If you have your goal written down, you won’t lose the focus and you won’t end up making decisions that are unrelated to your end goals such as applying for an internship completely unrelated.

To help you stay focused on your end goal, together with writing it down every single morning, it also helps to have a visual mood board where you can see it every morning. Save your favorite Pinterest images, screenshot your favorite editor, stylist, the person you admire. Add a photo of the office of your favorite companies. Create a mood board, print it and put it where you can see it every morning and use it as your desktop wallpaper and phone as well. 

So I’ve said that in order to achieve your fashion career goals, you need to:

  • be specific
  • write down a plan
  • identify the first step and then all the others
  • write it down every single day
  • create a moodboard

There is something else that is really important in order to achieve your fashion career goal: consistency.

Your goals need multiple and several attempts to be achieved. Achieving a goal is not about something you do occasionally, it is about something you do every single day. That’s why writing it down every single day will help you stay motivated and remind yourself every single day to take action. 

I want to give you an example. My dream was to leave my full-time job to become my own boss. I wrote down a plan for this: in order to leave my job I have to turn Glam Observer into a business, so I had to think about how to make money from it. Money doesn’t come overnight so every single day for the last 3 years I get up every single morning and work to make it happen. It was hard, it’s still hard. I still get nos, I didn’t see money for the first year and even now all the money I get, I reinvest back into the business. I make sacrifices but I’ve kept going and today I’m here where I wanted to be and every single day I give my best and put in actions my plan. You maybe don’t want to become your own CEO, maybe you want to become the senior editor at vogue , but like for my business, success doesn’t come overnight, you need to work every single day even when it seems like there is no more hope. Like I said, hope is not a strategy and being discouraged is not an option!

Don’t just give your best in the first week and then slow down the pace. It’s like going to the gym. If you’re motivated and you decide you want to be fitter and stronger you need to go to the gym every single day of the year and then the next year. Working out for one month won’t bring you any results. You need to be consistent to reach your goal. 

It’s not easy, you have to be intentional, show up every single morning, act every single day.

But what would it feel like to go to work every morning happy to do your job? What would it feel like to have realized your dream?

I want you to start today! And I want you to never stop. Once your first goal has been achieved, what’s the next one? And the next?

How to Set and Achieve Your Fashion Career Goals

In the professional context, strategising your career progression can help you define and visualise success in concrete terms, as well as break down how you may achieve it, helping you see success as attainable. Indeed, neuroscience research suggests people who do so are 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to accomplish their goals, as reported by Forbes .

Nevertheless, the process might feel “overwhelming if you don’t break it down, because then you just don’t know where to start,” says Carla Isabel Carstens, former fashion PR executive turned career coach and strategic fashion communications professor at LIM College’s Graduate Studies Department. “Figuring out how am I getting from X to Y [makes it] easier to outline a strategy, understand it and communicate it, because you understand the reason you’re doing that thing and how it’s going to impact you.”

While there exist several frameworks for goal setting, most are similar in essence, dictating the goal setter first identifies their emotional drivers and motivations before creating a detailed, multi-stage roadmap of their next steps, potential obstacles and respective solutions, before finally placing it all on a timeline.

Since fashion is a notoriously competitive industry, emerging talent often does not have the luxury of choice of entry-level roles, and is urged to expand their horizons and seize opportunities that may not perfectly align with their ambitions just to get their foot in the door.

“At the start of your career, it’s more about discovery [of] what’s out there, how can you apply yourself. Sometimes you just fall into [a role] not by design, but by default — an opportunity comes along, or a [part-time] job — and you might get into your work and want more responsibility,” says Tracy Short, executive career consultant and coach, whose clients include Dr Martens, Harrods, Levi’s, Mango and Moncler, among others. “In the early days, it’s more around experience, trying new things, getting involved and understanding how things work.”

Senior executives and managers also benefit from actively encouraging employees to pursue career goals, be it through mentorship or training schemes. More than a kind act, this has a positive knock-on effect in the workplace, as shown by a study conducted by leadership training and employee engagement firm Leadership IQ. The study found that employees with access to formal training, for example, were 57 percent more engaged in their work, and those whose goals aligned with their organisation’s goals were 75 percent more engaged.

At the onset of 2023, BoF Careers sought the advice of seasoned fashion recruiters, career coaches and academic lecturers on how industry talent — junior and senior — can successfully set and achieve their professional goals.

Conduct a Personal Reflection

Perhaps counterintuitively, effective goal-setting does not start by jotting down a list of desired objectives. Rather, it begins by asking yourself why you want to achieve something in the first place.

Accomplishing your goals is not easy, and the process requires commitment and persistence, which is easier to maintain long-term if you outline your drivers and motivations from the get-go. This helps form a stronger emotional bond with the desired outcome, which in turn raises your chances of achieving it.

“Before you set goals and [how to] accomplish them, it’s important that you figure out why you want to achieve those goals, because when they are connected to a purpose or a reason, they become more meaningful, and it makes them easier to accomplish and to figure out what distractions are in your way,” says Carstens.

Short adds that “goal-setting comes from identifying gaps — what you want to do more of and what you want to do less of. Tune into yourself.”

This reflection will also come in handy later on when you are inevitably met with challenges or feelings of frustration. Re-reading a personal statement detailing your starting point and comparing it to where you are now can serve as a dopamine hit that engages your motivational systems anew. To maximise this effect, make sure your reflection uses words that evoke a growth mindset, such as “improve”, “develop”, “over time”, “progress”, “become” and “grow”.

List Your Goals, Obstacles and Solutions

Once you are clear on your “why”, reverse-engineer your ambitions to plan the necessary steps to accomplish them.

Sacha Milazzo Mercier is co-founder and director of G&M — a consultancy specialising in the recruitment and training of fashion talent. A trained clinical psychologist, Mercier has previously worked in the recruitment department at Louis Vuitton and is a guest speaker at London College of Fashion and Istituto Marangoni, among others. He advises fashion talent to start this process by being honest with themselves.

“[Identify] your skills and expertise, and look into what you want [to achieve]. You have to be aware of what you are good at, but also what you are not good at, because if you want to achieve a certain position, you have to understand what gaps you have to fill,” he says. “You also have to be objective with yourself — what are you willing to do? Fashion is a tough industry to enter and grow into, so you have to understand what you are willing to sacrifice.”

If you want to achieve a certain position, you have to understand what gaps you have to fill.

This pragmatic approach will reveal relevant focus points or changes you have to make in the short and long-term, and also help you think of your goals as realistic and attainable, further increasing the likelihood of achieving them. Remain self-aware and develop a strategy that reconciles your current positioning — your free time, skillset and experience — with objective parameters like the current job market and vocational standards.

Document all of this in writing because, according to research from the Dominican University of California, 61 percent of goals that are written down are eventually achieved, and those who write their goals down formulate action commitments and send reports about their weekly progress to their friends, achieving 76 percent of their goals.

Create a Roadmap

Having clearly defined your target and how to achieve it, build a roadmap to guide you.

Mercier believes designing the right path for yourself is done through data collection and conversations with others. He advises that you refer to outstanding professionals and their journeys for inspiration.

“With LinkedIn, you can discover what the people who have [your desired] job do, where they have been studying, what skills and tools they have learnt, what is their expertise,” he says. “In luxury production, for example, it is very important to speak French or Italian because [...] a lot of luxury products are still made in France [and] Italy. Learning a new language might take time.”

Carstens suggests creating a timeline that fits your immediate needs and schedule. “If your goal is to get your first job in fashion, I would recommend breaking [it] down step by step, whether that’s in 30 days or three-month increments [...] Think: what do [you] need to do in order to get a job? [You] need a resume, a cover letter, references — that is a month’s worth of work.”

For more senior professionals, “the first thing [to consider] is what can you achieve at your current company, any leads or ways that you can get a promotion,” says Short. Whether you wish to leave your current company or perhaps freelance, you should look for a “similar type of environment with more chance to grow. [...] Think strategically about how you are going to get somewhere.”

Be Agile and Persistent

As the past three years have illustrated, remaining agile in the face of tumultuous circumstances is the only way to get through them. In career planning, Mercier advises to “be open-minded, flexible and ready to adapt your plan.”

Whether you have only just started your fashion career or you wish to change direction, things might not immediately fall into place. “I compare your career to a ladder. Each role should guide you one step closer to the place you want to be in 10 years. Sometimes, that step might not look like you think it should, but if you are truly strategic about where your final stop is, you don’t have to worry,” says Carstens.

Put the time in to attend an event, gain insights, post it on LinkedIn and reach out. That says something about a potential candidate.

Carstens suggests, for those who did not have the opportunity to intern, to “attend industry events, whether it be virtual or in-person, and listen. [Afterwards,] get on LinkedIn — not Instagram — and write a synopsis of the event and what you learnt from it. Tag the people you would have loved to meet, and then send them that via LinkedIn. [Tell] them how much you appreciated [their insight], and that if there was ever an opportunity to have a 15-minute conversation to talk about X — be specific — that you would really appreciate it.

“That strategy has [helped] multiple of my clients [book] coffee meetings with C-level executives because of the thoughtfulness behind it. They put the time in to attend an event, gain insights, post it on LinkedIn and reach out. That says something about a potential candidate.”

Seek Out External Support

Having a support network by your side through the career planning process is an invaluable, sometimes differentiating, resource. First, it allows for a more objective reflection of yourself and your capabilities at a time when you may feel more judgemental or critical of those things, offering you a more balanced perspective.

Moreover, support from a manager or a mentor could propel your progression at your company and the industry as a whole. Leaders do not always volunteer feedback, but you should seek it out proactively.

“Schedule time with your boss to get feedback or ask them questions. Don’t wait for them to give you that opportunity, because they might not realise that you’re not getting the oversight or mentorship you need. It shows that you care, and at the end of the day, senior-level employees want employees that care,” says Carstens.

Mercier believes managers are best positioned to support employees’ development as the ones who oversee them directly, with the ability to act as a mirror to identify strengths and weaknesses. Still, he advises fashion professionals seek out external mentors to diversify the pool of opinions they receive.

“Our brain works better when we access diversity, when we get rid of stereotypes. [...] Looking outside [the company] gives you access to diversity, opens up your mind and makes you look further and discover new things,” he says.

3 Strategies to Help You Set Goals for a Successful Fashion Career Path in 2024

Before making this episode, I thought about what helpful information or advice I could provide that not only would be beneficial for you as a professional, but that would arm you with the best tools to help you on your fashion career path in the new year. 

More so than other years, 2023 felt tough. The job market was unpredictable and left many people feeling hopeless, discouraged and angry. 

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about 3 strategies to help you set goals for a successful fashion career path in the new year. It’s a mixture of things for both beginners and experienced professionals, so be sure to listen all the way through.

When it comes to your career, it’s important to have a roadmap or a plan to help guide you and keep you focused on your goals – especially when we’re faced with things like a tough job market, constant reminders from people all around us about their successes and new roles or simply when we feel discouraged and need some motivation to keep going. 

UNDERSTAND YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, CHALLENGES & INTERESTS

In order to have a successful fashion career path in 2024, the first thing you have to do is get a clear sense of what you want to actually achieve in your career and the steps you need to take to get there. One of the best things about starting a new year is that it gives you an opportunity to understand your career aspirations and set specific goals for the year ahead. 

If you’re not 100% sure of what you want your career goals to be in the new year, start by reflecting on your accomplishments and challenges this year. Take some time to think about what you’ve achieved in your career so far and what challenges you’ve faced. 

For example, let’s say you were able to get your first job in the industry this year as an assistant designer. It was so exciting and the best news of 2023. But now that you’ve had months to experience it, you realize that the position is not what you thought it was. You’ve struggled with particular assignments, like the techniques, while excelling at others like selecting fabrics, colors and details like buttons. 

By taking the time to reflect on your accomplishments and challenges, it can help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement, while also giving you a better sense of where you want to go in the future and ultimately, what you want to do.

While reviewing this past year and this job, maybe it will allow you to see that instead of being a designer, what you actually want to do is work with designers as a fashion stylist. 

If you’re still not sure what your career goals should be in 2024 after considering your accomplishments and your challenges, try to identify your core values and interests.

Start by thinking about what’s most important to you in your career. What values do you want to uphold in your work? What kind of work do you enjoy and find fulfilling? What do you want to achieve in your fashion career in the long run? Do you want to start your own fashion business or work for a specific company? 

Answering these questions can help you identify your long-term career goals and guide your decision-making as you move forward. In turn, clearly defining your long-term career aspirations can help you create specific goals to work towards. 

SET YOUR SMART GOALS

Once you’ve done this work and started to map out what your accomplishments, challenges, core values and interests are, it’s time to set your goals. 

When setting career goals, it’s important to be specific and to set goals that are achievable, relevant and have a clear timeline. 

My absolute favorite way of setting goals is using something I learned back in college and still incorporate into my planning and journaling every single January when I’m mapping out my goals for the year. This is called the SMART goal-setting method .

In essence, the SMART method is an acronym: the letters S,M,A,R,T all stand for a step you need to take within the framework which allows you to create specific, achievable and measurable goals. It can be particularly useful for professionals looking to set career goals because it helps to ensure that your goals are well-defined, realistic and obtainable while also helping you achieve your long-term objectives in the fashion industry.

Now, before I go into what each letter stands for, I’ve included a worksheet within this lesson that you can use to map out your career goals for 2024 using the SMART method. You can download your own copy here or by using the link at the end of this post and follow along as we go over the method itself. 

The “S” stands for Specific Make your goals as specific as possible. It’s important to set specific goals because they are more focused and easier to work towards than general goals. 

When your goals are specific, you have a clear target to aim for and can take concrete steps to achieve them. This can help you stay motivated and focused while helping you increase your chances of success.

For example, consider the following two goals:

  • “I want to be successful in the fashion industry.”
  • “I want to become the lead designer at a fashion company within the next five years.”

The first goal is very general and doesn’t give you much direction. It’s hard to know exactly what you need to do in order to achieve this goal, plus it’s difficult to measure your progress towards it.

The second goal is much more specific. It gives you a clear target to aim for and a timeline to work within. It’s also easier to measure progress towards this goal because you know exactly what you need to achieve and when you need to achieve it by.

By setting specific goals, you can focus your efforts and resources on achieving a specific outcome, which can help you stay on track for your fashion career path plan.

It also helps to ensure that you have a clear and well-defined objective to work towards. A specific goal provides direction and focus, and helps you to understand exactly what you’re trying to achieve. It also makes it easier to measure your progress and determine when you’ve achieved your goal.

Next, the “M” in SMART stands for Measurable It’s essential to create goals that you can measure within a specific timeline because it helps you track your progress towards your objective. When you are able to see that you are making progress towards your goals, it can give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you motivated to continue working towards them.

On the other hand, if you set goals that are difficult or impossible to measure, it can be difficult to know whether you’re moving in the right direction or not. This can lead to frustration and may make it harder to achieve your goals.

Consider the following two goals:

  • “I want to improve my fashion design skills.”
  • “I want to complete a fashion design course within the next six months.”

The first goal is difficult to measure because it’s not clear what “improvement” means in this particular case. It’s hard to quantify whether you are making any progress.

The second goal gives you a clear target to aim for and a timeline to work within. You can track your progress by completing course assignments and working towards a final exam, plus you’ll know when you’ve achieved your goal once you complete the course.

By setting goals that you can measure progress towards, you can track your advancement and stay focused as you work towards your goals.

Measuring progress also helps you identify areas where you may be falling behind or where you need to focus more effort. This can allow you to adjust your approach and make changes to your plan as needed to help you stay on track and achieve your objectives.

Then, we head to “A” – which stands for Achievable Set goals that are achievable and realistic given your current resources and skills. By setting goals that fall within these parameters, it increases your chances of actually achieving them. If you set goals that are too ambitious or unrealistic, you may become discouraged and lose interest or the will to continue working towards them.

Realistic goals also help you to stay grounded and focused on what is possible given your current resources and skills. While it’s important to challenge yourself and stretch your abilities, it’s also important to be realistic about what you can achieve given your current circumstances. If your goals are realistic and achievable, you are more likely to stay motivated and focused on achieving them.

If you set goals that are too difficult to achieve, you may become discouraged and lose all momentum to work towards them. On the other hand, if you set goals that are too easy, you may not challenge yourself enough and may not make the progress you desire.

From there, we go to the letter “R” which stands for Relevant Make sure your goals are relevant to your long-term career aspirations and values. If you’re not passionate about a particular goal, it will be difficult to stay focused and keep working at it.

Goals that are relevant to your long-term career aspirations and values help to keep you motivated and focused on what is most important to you. When your goals align with your long-term career aspirations and values, you are more likely to feel a sense of purpose and meaning in your work, which can help you stay motivated and engaged.

On the other hand, if your goal is unrelated to your long-term aspirations and values, they become unimportant over time and this is where the sense of feeling “lost” comes in, causing you to lose sight of the end goal and causing an interruption in your fashion career path.

Goals should be relevant to your long-term career aspirations and values because they provide a sense of purpose and direction, and help you stay motivated and focused on what’s most important to you. When your goals are aligned with your long-term aspirations and values, you are more likely to be passionate about the work you put in and more likely to stay committed to putting in the effort required to achieve them.

For example, if your long-term career aspiration is to become a successful fashion designer, setting a goal to become a salesperson might not be particularly relevant or motivating. Instead, setting a goal to complete a fashion design course or to land a job at a fashion design company would be more relevant and motivating, because it aligns with your long-term career aspirations.

Setting goals that are relevant to your long-term career aspirations can help you stay motivated and focused on what is most important to you in your career while increasing your chances of success in the fashion industry.

The final letter in the acronym is “T” and that stands for Time-Bound It’s crucial to set a timeline for when you want to achieve your goals because it provides a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused and motivated. 

When you have a clear timeline, you know how much time you have to achieve your goals, which can help you prioritize your tasks and focus on what’s most important. It allows you to have a clear deadline to work towards, which can help you stay on track and avoid getting distracted.

By setting a timeline, you can create a sense of urgency that helps you focus your energy and resources on achieving your goals in a timely manner. It also helps you measure your progress and make adjustments as needed. 

For example, if you set a goal to complete a fashion design course within the next six months, you can track your progress along the way and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you meet your deadline.

Using the SMART goal framework helps to direct your actions so that they all contribute to reaching your goals. As you implement this framework, it may highlight where you could run into challenges. That allows you to plan and chart a detailed course that is prepared for obstacles.

Put this together and you’re left with a detailed goal-setting plan that keeps you focused and headed in the right direction towards the next step in the process.

CREATE A PLAN OF ACTION

Once you have identified your career goals and opportunities for growth, create a plan of action to help you achieve them. 

Using the information you created with the SMART method, first break your goals down into smaller, more manageable steps that you can take over the course of the year. Large, long-term goals can be overwhelming, so it’s often helpful to break them down into smaller, more practical steps. This can help you make progress towards your goals on a regular basis and stay motivated as you work towards your larger objectives.

Next, you’ll want to identify the resources you need. Consider the skills and knowledge that are necessary to achieve your goals. Are there any gaps in your current skills that you’ll need to fill in order to move forward? If so, research different education and training options, such as courses, workshops, or degree programs, and determine which ones are most relevant and valuable for your career aspirations. 

Additionally, be proactive in seeking out opportunities for growth and development. This might include taking on new responsibilities at work (if you have a job), seeking out new learning opportunities or networking with others within the fashion industry.

You’ll also want to do some research on the fashion industry itself and the job market to get a better sense of the skills and knowledge that are in demand. This can help you identify the resources you’ll need to build your skills and knowledge in order to be competitive in your field.

By considering key things you’ll need to achieve your goals, such as education, training, funding, or equipment, you’ll have a stronger foundation and an overall more realistic plan to help you achieve your career goals in the new year.

From there, create a timeline for when you want to achieve each of your goals. This can help you stay focused and provide a sense of urgency to get things done. It’s also important to think about potential obstacles or challenges you may face as you work towards your goals, as there will always be setbacks. Identifying strategies for overcoming these obstacles will help you stay on track.

Finally, review and adjust your goals and plan of action regularly. This is incredibly important to ensure they are still relevant and aligned with your values and interests, especially as time passes and as your experience within the industry grows. 

Don’t be afraid to adjust your goals or plan on your fashion career path as needed to reflect your changing needs and circumstances.

IN THE END…

By setting goals and creating a solid plan, you can stay focused and inspired as you work towards your fashion career path. The new year is a great time to take a step back and think about your short and long-term goals within the industry and your career. Using these strategies will help you understand exactly what you should be working towards, how to achieve it and how long it should take. 

Of course, there are things that could be out of your control, but the idea here is to have a solid overall plan on the things you do have control over. Things such as professional career development by way of courses, workshops or mentorships or specific examples of in-demand jobs that align with your skills, core values and interests.

Some additional things to keep in mind as you set your goals for the new year:

  • Incorporate rewards as you reach milestones for any goal – these could be things like treating yourself to a mani/pedi or a fancy dinner 
  • Always start with the “why” for your goals, as in, “Why am I setting this goal?” – this will ensure that you’re always pursuing goals that speak to your heart and align with your experience and knowledge – not just following the plan you made at the start of the year
  • Be realistic with your goal setting and make sure they fit your abilities and values – by not doing this, you will start to feel uninspired when you find that there are parts of your plan that are just not possible. Keep things flowing and positive by setting realistic goals
  • Keep a calendar, either virtual or physical, to track time and measure progress – this can be as simple as a Google Doc, a spreadsheet or an app that does it all for you like Strides.
  • Acknowledge setbacks, but don’t dwell on them – they happen to all of us, but the key here (and the difference between people that achieve their goals and those that don’t) is that even through the setbacks, they keep going.

Phew! That was a heavy lesson! But this is the type of work you should be putting at the start of each year to ensure that you reach those big, amazing goals in your fashion career. 

I do it without fail every single January and have been doing it for the past 5 years. The difference I’ve seen in my career by doing this is life-changing and it’s all because it allows you to have an intentional plan set in place that you can refer back to anytime. 

I want the same thing for you in this new year and always. 

Get ready to step into 2023 with confidence and power knowing you are working towards a solid career goal from January 1st: a goal that reflects your interests, your dreams and is attainable in every way. 

A goal that will bring you that much closer to your dream fashion industry career.

The most rewarding aspect of being a designer is seeing people feel good in something I've created. Clothes should ultimately enhance the human experience, and when one gets to a point of creation where garments contribute to someone's confidence, it's something to be proud of.

What are the most challenging aspects of your career?

Fashion design is a competitive, busy, and fast-paced industry. The nature of it can be exhausting, even frustrating at times.

When the road to becoming a fashion designer was challenging, what kept you going?

Working in fashion in New York is a dream come true, but being far from home is very hard sometimes. The key for me was to always look at the bigger picture, aim for that image I created for myself, and put in the work to get there. I now know that not everything will go as expected, but everything will be a learning experience on the way to where I want to be.

Granted, this is hard to understand when something doesn't go as planned, but the best way is through. Letting all the effort I've put in go to waste was never an option for me, so I'd allow myself to feel my feelings and keep going.

What type of person is successful and thrives in a fashion career? What type of person may not be the best fit?

Many different types of people are successful in fashion. What they all have in common is that they haven't only perfected their skills, but they've developed their own taste and aesthetic preferences and understand them really well.

Knowing how to take criticism is a big part of this job. If someone struggles with this, it doesn't mean they are not a good fit for fashion — just that they might need to work on accepting critique on their work.

What's a typical day for a fashion designer? What tasks do you typically work on?

I work on every step of the design process, from the initial research and designing a collection to fitting the sample garments and making corrections with the technical designers.

I prefer sketching by hand to get my ideas flowing, but I do my job sketching in Illustrator and sometimes in a 3D program. It's a lot of screen time and a lot of editing and reviewing.

The installed idea that fashion is a glamorous world is not entirely true. It's a very hands-on career.

Who do you communicate with?

I communicate with several different teams permanently every day. I mostly work closely with product developers and technical designers, who are in charge of the construction of a garment and setting up fittings for designers.

I also work with a graphics team and a prints team, as well as with other design teams, such as woven shirts and outerwear.

Besides communicating with creatives, my team also works close to the merchandising team, who dictate the seasonal collection needs. It really is a huge team effort.

What kind of hours do you keep?

Sometimes it gets busier, and you might need to put in some extra time, but most days, even working from home, 9am-6pm are my hours.

I used to work during Fashion Week, and those days were longer. Producing a runway show takes a lot of preparation because there are a lot of parts moving together, so the schedule can get a bit out of control. There was always something to do, but it was a lot of fun. I loved it.

Who are your coworkers?

My coworkers are mostly other fashion and textile designers, but also illustrators, graphic designers, and product designers. We all come from different places and we all have our own strengths we bring to the table. It's great to work with people you can also learn from.

What knowledge do you utilize?

Technically, knowledge of garment construction is necessary, especially because you're going to be participating in fittings and you need to know how to modify that garment in order to solve any issue that might come up.

Personally, even if you're just starting, knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is a must for me. You can always learn and improve your skills, but a good foundation is always good.

Since becoming a fashion designer, has there been anything about the role that you didn't expect or anticipate?

Absolutely! Fashion design school does not reflect the reality of being a fashion designer accurately. It is very idealistic and abstract. It surprised me to see how much weight departments like merchandising have, for example.

At the end of the day, you need to make money to keep your company in business, and contrary to that, designers are trained to look to the future and experiment. It took me a while to find the right balance between pushing for newness through experimentation and creating something that makes a profit without feeling like a "sell out."

What would you recommend that students do, in addition to their fashion design degree programs, in order to stand out to employers?

Anything they genuinely find interesting [that] they could use to fuel their designs. When interviewing, I was always drawn to candidates who had something they were passionate and knowledgeable about, which they could take elements from to add to their own creations. It's about differentiating yourself and bringing something new to the table.

Career Planning for a Fashion Design Position

You are a fashion guru. It is your passion. You always know just what to wear and keep appraised of the newest styles. You know which styles are going to be popular each season. Your friends come to you for advice on what to wear and how to put an outfit together. You head is full of ideas, and you can put those ideas on paper or make them come to life in a computer. A career in fashion design might be for you.

What does a fashion designer do?

A fashion designer generates original ideas. Whether it’s clothing, footwear or accessories such as handbags and belts, the fashion designer draws or uses a computer program to create something new. Then the designer will often shop trade shows or other sources to find the right fabrics or other materials from which to manifest their creation. Finally, the fashion designer will provide direction on the manufacture of their creation.

What education do I need?

While associate degrees in fashion design are available, most designers get at least a bachelor’s degree . This education gives you the tools you need to be competitive, such as learning CAD programs used to create new designs.

How do I gain competitive edge?

The fashion design industry is highly competitive, and in order to be successful, you and your work must stand out. You are creative, otherwise you would not be interested in the position. An education will help you refine and direct that creativity in order to turn your ideas into marketable products. However, being creative is not enough.

Often you will be working for others and submitting your ideas for approval. In order to thrive in the industry, you must have confidence and a thick skin. You must be able to successfully market yourself, and develop the business acumen and intuition needed to determine what will sell and how to present your idea. There will be times when your ideas will be met with rejection, or a creative director will take an idea you absolutely love and ask you to change it. As stated above, in order to be successful, a fashion designer must learn to market themselves. You can have the greatest eye and the most creative ideas, but before you can get paid for those ideas, you have to be convincing and sell your ideas to others. If you are planning on working in the industry as an employee, you must convince your prospective employer that, among all the other very talented people out there, you are the right person for the job. If you are planning on going into business for yourself, then you must be able to promote your business and gain a competitive edge. This often means business and marketing classes are just as important as classes that focus on design and creativity. It may be a good idea for a fashion major to minor in marketing or business .
