While there are any number of templates that you can use to write a business plan, it's best to try to avoid producing a generic-looking one. Let your plan reflect the unique personality of your business.

Many business plans use some combination of the sections below, with varying levels of detail, depending on the company.

The length of a business plan can vary greatly from business to business. Regardless, it's best to fit the basic information into a 15- to 25-page document. Other crucial elements that take up a lot of space—such as applications for patents—can be referenced in the main document and attached as appendices.

These are some of the most common elements in many business plans:

  • Executive summary: This section introduces the company and includes its mission statement along with relevant information about the company's leadership, employees, operations, and locations.
  • Products and services: Here, the company should describe the products and services it offers or plans to introduce. That might include details on pricing, product lifespan, and unique benefits to the consumer. Other factors that could go into this section include production and manufacturing processes, any relevant patents the company may have, as well as proprietary technology . Information about research and development (R&D) can also be included here.
  • Market analysis: A company needs to have a good handle on the current state of its industry and the existing competition. This section should explain where the company fits in, what types of customers it plans to target, and how easy or difficult it may be to take market share from incumbents.
  • Marketing strategy: This section can describe how the company plans to attract and keep customers, including any anticipated advertising and marketing campaigns. It should also describe the distribution channel or channels it will use to get its products or services to consumers.
  • Financial plans and projections: Established businesses can include financial statements, balance sheets, and other relevant financial information. New businesses can provide financial targets and estimates for the first few years. Your plan might also include any funding requests you're making.

The best business plans aren't generic ones created from easily accessed templates. A company should aim to entice readers with a plan that demonstrates its uniqueness and potential for success.

2 Types of Business Plans

Business plans can take many forms, but they are sometimes divided into two basic categories: traditional and lean startup. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) , the traditional business plan is the more common of the two.

  • Traditional business plans : These plans tend to be much longer than lean startup plans and contain considerably more detail. As a result they require more work on the part of the business, but they can also be more persuasive (and reassuring) to potential investors.
  • Lean startup business plans : These use an abbreviated structure that highlights key elements. These business plans are short—as short as one page—and provide only the most basic detail. If a company wants to use this kind of plan, it should be prepared to provide more detail if an investor or a lender requests it.

Why Do Business Plans Fail?

A business plan is not a surefire recipe for success. The plan may have been unrealistic in its assumptions and projections to begin with. Markets and the overall economy might change in ways that couldn't have been foreseen. A competitor might introduce a revolutionary new product or service. All of this calls for building some flexibility into your plan, so you can pivot to a new course if needed.

How frequently a business plan needs to be revised will depend on the nature of the business. A well-established business might want to review its plan once a year and make changes if necessary. A new or fast-growing business in a fiercely competitive market might want to revise it more often, such as quarterly.

What Does a Lean Startup Business Plan Include?

The lean startup business plan is an option when a company prefers to give a quick explanation of its business. For example, a brand-new company may feel that it doesn't have a lot of information to provide yet.

Sections can include: a value proposition ; the company's major activities and advantages; resources such as staff, intellectual property, and capital; a list of partnerships; customer segments; and revenue sources.

A business plan can be useful to companies of all kinds. But as a company grows and the world around it changes, so too should its business plan. So don't think of your business plan as carved in granite but as a living document designed to evolve with your business.

Just about every industry has more than one player in the market. Even if your business owns the majority of the market share in your industry or your business concept is the first of its kind, you still have competition. Budgeting is the process of preparing and overseeing a financial document that estimates income and expenses for a period. For business owners, executives, and managers, budgeting is a key skill for ensuring organizations and teams have the resources to execute initiatives and reach goals.

A basic budget consists of projected income and expenses for a given period (for instance, the upcoming quarter or year). After expenses are subtracted from projected income, the leftover money can be allocated to projects and initiatives, ensuring you’re not planning to overspend.

During the project’s postmortem, you ask questions like, “Why did we run over budget? Was this an issue of inefficiency or misallocation?” When creating the budget for next year, you use those insights to tighten the process and keep the project’s spend at $10 million or more accurately allocate funds to other projects.

Types of Budgeting

There are several budgeting types that each prioritize different factors when approaching a financial plan. These include:

  • Zero-based budgeting , which sets each item at zero dollars at the start of periods before reallocating
  • Static budgeting or incremental-based budgeting , which uses historical data to add or subtract a percentage from the previous period to create the upcoming period’s budget
  • Performance-based budgeting , which emphasizes the cash flow per unit of product or service
  • Activity-based budgeting , which starts with the company’s goals and works backward to determine the cost of attaining them
  • Value proposition budgeting , which assumes no line item should be included in the budget unless it directly provides value to the organization

The right budgeting type varies by company and situation. If your organization is in financial distress, the zero-based method may be the best fit, as it starts from scratch each period. At its core, budgeting’s primary function is to ensure an organization has enough resources to meet its goals. By planning financials in advance, you can determine which teams and initiatives require more resources and areas where you can cut back.

As an advisor to small businesses and entrepreneurs, I too often hear the desire to be a big company. I have to remind owners that there are advantages to being small, and in fact, many large companies leaders wish their business was small again, to let them be more focused on their customer needs and their own satisfaction, rather than constant pressure from investors.

The challenge of every business is to capitalize on strengths, stay healthy, and achieve success. I recently was impressed by a summary of these challenges in a new book, “ Small Business, Big Success ,” by Cynthia Kay. She is the founder of an award-winning media production and communications consulting firm and has worked extensively with both large and small companies.

She starts by highlighting the top reasons why we both believe that big businesses normally like small companies, and actually look to them as complementary to their needs. I will paraphrase these reasons here, adding my own insights, and I recommend that every small business owner orient their strategy and action plans along these lines:

1. Small businesses are easy to do business with. They don’t have complicated processes and procedures that have to be adhered to. Also, small businesses are not likely to have a whole legal staff that wants to negotiate every point of a new contract. Customers of all sizes can easily establish a relationship with key decision makers.

2. Organizations are flexible to new requirements. They can move schedules around, assign people to step in when needed, and don’t have an 8-5 mentality. Small companies know they must adapt to competitive business environments and practices in terms of technology, structure, work organization, and human resource management all at once.

3. Can change course when needed without delay. If the scope of a project or customer relationship changes, there is no need to negotiate with endless gatekeepers to get the approvals required to keep from stalling the work. Work delays can damage a big company’s reputation with any customer, and other stakeholders could be disillusioned or impacted.

4. Bring big businesses great new ideas. Small businesses are closer to customers and are always looking for new opportunities or solution innovations. They are not so wed to the way things have always been done, and thrive on new solutions, services, or business model ideas. Historically, most new ideas are sourced from small businesses.

5. Have a “can-do” mentality at all levels. Because the teams are small, they don’t have the luxury of experts to do any given task. They are willing to take on any challenge, and accept that mistakes are inevitable, but don’t have to be accepted as failures. Mistakes are opportunities to learn, improve, and grow, instead of dwelling on what went wrong.

6. Teams are “lean” so provide value at low cost. Small-business owners always spend client’s money as if it were their own, and don’t ever want to waste scarce resources. Big clients appreciate that and rely on their relationships with small partners to keep everyone focused on key issues. These lean teams take pride in their skills and high productivity.

Despite these points, I recognize there has often been a love/hate relationship between small business and big business. Big companies get tired of being called slow and inefficient, while small-business owners often feel that big business gets all the breaks, special treatment, and legislation to help them compete. I urge both to not let emotions interfere with business opportunities and relationships.

Palantir made a ton of money this year thanks to strong US demand. But don't expect much growth in Europe.

Palantir raked in more money than ever last quarter — and much of it came from customers in its backyard, according to the company's earnings released Monday.

Denver, Colorado-based Palantir, which develops software for private and military purposes, posted revenue of $634 million in the quarter ending March 31, a 21% increase from the same time last year. The revenue largely comes from growth in both private and military segments in the US, as it faces headwinds in the international market.

"I think it is fair to say we crushed Q1 in the US. We are on fire," said Palantir CEO Alex Karp on Monday's earnings call.

Palantir's best-known business is supplying technology to the US government, which grew 12% year-over-year, to $257 million. Its private-sector business is seeing even faster growth. US commercial revenue, which comes from selling software to 262 firms like Cleveland Clinic and General Mills, rose 40% year-over-year to $150 million, per Monday's earnings.

Palantir is doubling down on the US, including defense and AI, Karp said on Monday's call.

While the company reported strong US numbers, its international performance dipped compared to the previous quarter because of an accounting move and "continued headwinds in Europe," chief financial officer Dave Glazer said on Monday's call.

International commercial revenue for the first quarter was $149 million — down 3% from the prior quarter, but up 16% year-on-year. And international government revenue was down 9% from the prior quarter, to $79 million — though up 33% year-on-year.

"Europe is gliding toward 0% GDP growth over the next couple of years. That is a problem for us. There is no easy remedy for that," Glazer said.

The software maker's stock fell over 8% in after-hours trading, but it is up 52% this year as it rides the artificial intelligence wave.

Because of its government work, Palantir has long been a lightning rod for domestic and international political debates.

The company supplies AI models to militaries allied with the US, including Israel and Ukraine. In March, Karp said that employees left the company because of its stance on Israel.

"If you have a position that does not cost you ever to lose an employee, it's not a position," he said in March.

Karp addressed the matter in the call as well, saying Palantir is the first call for Western allies in global conflicts.

"The central risk to Palantir and America and the world is a regressive way of thinking that is corrupting and corroding our institutions that calls itself progressive," he said. "But is actually a form of a thin pagan religion."

The CEO lashed out at the wave of pro-Palestine student protests occurring at US universities in a conversation with Palantir's senior policy advisor during a tech conference in Washington, DC last week. He brought the matter up again on the earnings call.

"The greatest institutions of our time disappear and turn into discriminatory dysfunction," he said on the call.

For the second quarter of 2024, the company said it expects revenue between $649 and $653 million, close to a $20 million increase from first-quarter revenue.

Federal Reserve keeps interest rates at current levels as inflation holds its grip

The Federal Reserve left its key interest rate unchanged at between 5.25% and 5.5% — the highest level in more than a decade — as annual inflation rates continued to stall.

In its statement announcing the hold, the central bank said that in recent months, there had been "a lack of further progress" toward its 2% percent inflation goal.

"Economic activity has continued to expand at a solid pace," it said. "Job gains have remained strong, and the unemployment rate has remained low. Inflation has eased over the past year but remains elevated."

Last month, the consumer price index came in at 3.5% on an annual basis, driven by rising housing costs and insurance rates, especially auto insurance.

"We're just a mile a way from the finish line," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's, referring to the economy reaching 2% inflation. "We're very close, but still not there. I do think that inflation will continue to moderate."

The Fed has sought to slow inflation by keeping interest rates elevated. By making it more expensive for businesses and consumers to borrow money, including through credit cards, the Fed hopes to reduce demand for goods and services, thereby reducing price growth.

So far, the results of doing this have been mixed. After a period of rapid interest rate hikes, the pace of inflation fell from more than 9% in the summer of 2022 to its current levels of between 3% and 4%.

But the decline has since stalled.

There are complex reasons for the lack of progress and many elements may actually be out of the Federal Reserve's control. Home and auto insurance companies continue to pass on higher costs to consumers . Meanwhile, even as many consumers struggle, post-pandemic wealth gains have left others — especially older consumers — with plenty of money to spend, despite higher prices.

Whatever the case, the wait for slower inflation has left the average consumer in an increasingly dour mood. On Tuesday, the Conference Board’s monthly Consumer Confidence Index came in at its lowest level since July 2022. Consumers expressed more concern about the current labor market situation, future business conditions, job availability and income, the group said.

Still, most analysts say the odds of a recession are remote. In the most recent GDP report, spending on services, which includes everything from restaurants to airfare to professional services, came in at 4% year-on-year, the fastest rate since 2021.

“Don’t underestimate this economy,” economists with Wells Fargo said in a report following the release.

Consumers thus appear to be sensing that the most crucial part of the economy — the jobs market — is slowing, even while prices remain elevated.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged this complex economic environment in remarks in early March.

"The outlook is still quite uncertain," Powell said. The central bank must balance its campaign against elevated inflation with ensuring the economy does not slip into a recession.

Economists like Zandi aren't expecting the Fed to raise interest rates, either.

Instead, the Fed will likely continue to keep rates elevated — perhaps even until after the November general election so that it does not appear to favor one candidate or another.

"[Powell's] message is clear: We can’t cut rates and we’re not there yet," Zandi said. "We've still got a ways to go."

It's officially election week, which means it's time to make a voting plan for the May 7 primary election if you haven't already. Polls are open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. local time Tuesday.

How do I know if I'm registered to vote?

Voters can double check they are registered by going to indianavoters.in.gov and entering in their information.

If you are not yet registered to vote, it's too late to do so for the May primary. However, you can still register to vote in the November general election by going to indianavoters.in.gov .

Where can I vote?

In Marion County, voters can can cast a ballot at any vote center on Election Day. A list of available locations, as well as a map of sites, can be found at vote.indy.gov/vote-centers . Boone, Hendricks, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties all allow voters to go to any vote center in the county as well.

Hamilton County residents have to vote at their assigned locations. You can find your voting location at indianavoters.in.gov .

What else to know before you head to the polls

  • Decide which party you want to vote for: In Indiana, voters don't register with a particular political party, which means once you get to the polls, you'll have to tell the poll workers whether you want to pull a Republican or Democratic ballot. What you pick will impact the number of contested races you get to vote on.
  • Bring your ID : Indiana law requires voters to show a government-issued photo ID that displays your name, photo and an expiration date of the last general election or later. Student IDs from an Indiana state school, not a private university, will work as long as they meet the above criteria.

What races will be on my ballot?

This year the following elected positions are up for election:

  • President of the United States
  • U.S. Senate
  • U.S. House of Representatives
  • State representatives
  • State Senate (half of the seats)
  • Other local races

But, not everyone will have a choice for every elected position. Some races are uncontested or feature no candidates. You can see who all will be on your specific ballot at indianavoters.in.gov .

Who is running for governor?

U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, former Secretary of Commerce Brad Chambers, Fort Wayne entrepreneur Eric Doden, former Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill and mom-of-five Jamie Reitenour are running for governor on the Republican ballot.

Jennifer McCormick, the former state schools superintendent, is the only choice on the Democratic ballot for governor.

Will I have a choice for U.S. Senate or president?

That depends on whether you pull a Republican or Democratic ballot.

For president, President Joe Biden is the only choice for the Democratic nominee. Meanwhile, Republicans can technically choose between former President Donald Trump and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley . Haley, though, dropped out of the race after she had qualified for Indiana's ballot.

For U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Jim Banks is the only Republican candidate who will be on the ballot. Democrats will have a choice between Rep. Marc Carmichael and Valerie McCray.

What other races should I read up on?

The following primary congressional races are poised to be competitive, two of which are located in central Indiana.

  • Republican 3rd Congressional District primary : With Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Banks running for one of Indiana’s U.S. Senate seats, eight Republican candidates are running for the northeast Indiana district. Nonprofit executive Tim Smith, former Allen County Circuit Court judge Wendy Davis, former 3rd District Rep. Marlin Stutzman and state Sen. Andy Zay had raised the most money by mid-April, including personal loans.
  • Republican 5th Congressional District primary : Nine Republican candidates are running for the this district, which stretches from Hamilton County north to Grant County. U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz and Noblesville State Rep. Chuck Goodrich are the frontrunners, according to internal polling.
  • Republican 6th Congressional District primary: U.S. Rep. Greg Pence decided not to seek reelection in this district that includes the southern portion of Marion County, which has led to a contentious Republican primary between seven candidates . Former Republican mayoral nominee Jefferson Shreve, state Rep. Mike Speedy, state Sen. Jeff Raatz, former lawmakers John Jacob and Bill Frazier, businessman Jamison Carrier and Darin Childress are running.
  • Republican 8th Congressional District primary : U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon is also not seeking reelection. Seven Republicans are running for the southwestern Indiana district. State Sen. Mark Messmer, R-Jasper, and former U.S. Rep. John Hostettler are the frontrunners.

There are a number of competitive Statehouse races , too. Three Hamilton County Republican primary races feature no incumbent lawmaker this year, due to the departures of state Reps. Jerry Torr, Donna Schaibley and Chuck Goodrich.
