Essay on My First Day in School in 100 words

It was a cloudy day when I took my first step into the compound of my school. I was carrying a new backpack that was filled with notebooks. Though the backpack was a bit heavy, instead of focusing on the weight, I was excited about the beginning of my journey on my first day in school.

My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. As a school student, I was about to enter a new world. 

The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. After a round of introductions and some warm-up activities, strangers gradually started tuning into potential friends. At lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the smell of delicious food. However, I hesitated before joining the group of students but soon enough, I was laughing with my new friends and sharing stories. The unfamiliar were now my friends and transformed my mixed emotions into delightfulness. 

The bell rang for the next class and I stepped out for new learning in my new academic home. My first day of school had many memorable stories, with old subjects and new introductions of knowledge. The day was spent learning, sharing and making new memories.

My first day in school started by stepping onto the school bus with a bag full of books and a heart full of curiosity. It was like I was starting a new chapter in my life. After travelling a long way back, I stepped at the gate of my school. The school gate welcomed me with open arms and greeted me with a sense of excitement as well as nervousness.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students. 

At first, I hesitated to interact with the children, but later on, I was a part of a group that invited me to join the table. At lunchtime, I made many new friends and was no longer a stranger. After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school. 

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. With new experiences, I look forward to new academic and personal growth in the wonderful world of education.

Reflections on the First Day of School from Junior School Diamanthorst Students

The first day of school can be an exciting time for new students. It's usually the day they meet all of their new classmates, learn lots of new things, and introduce themselves to their teachers.

This excitement isn't always shared by everyone, though. When you are not only new to the school, but sometimes new to the country or don't speak the language , the first day of school can be a little difficult and scary. But, with the help of our amazing teachers and staff, students grow more comfortable and find their own path.

These stories are very special and unique to our diverse student body - so, as we celebrate International Week here at the BSN, Key Stage 2 students have shared what their first day of school was like and how they feel about it now.

International Week is a week where we celebrate the diversity of the BSN and learn more about the journeys from others' walks of life. It's a time to reflect, learn, and commend the identity of every student and their background.

Diana – Year 5 I was in F2 when I first came to JSD and I didn’t speak any English at all. From the first day, school was really interesting because I couldn’t understand what anyone was saying to me. I kept calling out “Get me out of here, get me out of here!  Open the door!  Open the door!”  The teachers kept closing the door to keep me in. I knew my dad was sitting outside. He would stay because he was worried something would happen to me and I could see him through the window. The first year was very hard but by the end of Year 1 I felt like I could speak English, be understood and understand what others were saying. I remember going to Dutch lessons and not understanding one single thing. My mum stayed in Russia for quite a while because my little sister had just been born so I was really missing her too. I remember being so tired every day, my brain had to work really hard.  

Yara – Year 5 I was in Year 3 when I came to JSD and I had just come from Saudi Arabia. I had been to school in Saudi and I could read and write in Arabic and then when I came here it was hard not being able to communicate well. I remember other children being friendly to me but I just couldn’t understand what was being said. There was a girl could Mariam who could speak Arabic and she explained so much to me. I was so pleased to have her as my friend.  When I first started at JSD I would go home and cry because I missed my family so much. In Saudi the teacher talks and we listen but at JSD all the children get to say what they think in class. I started liking Maths lessons at JSD because the teachers would explain each step and I could then do it. 

Yury – Year 5 I was in Year 1 when I came to JSD and Mrs Sandford was my teacher.  I knew how to say ‘hello’ and ‘what’s your name?’  Russian school is very strict and organised and they don’t really take care of each individual person.  They have all types of lessons in Russian schools but children can make and design things. The teachers have papers from the government telling them what they have to teach. It probably took about two years until I really understood everything that was going on. Everything is great at JSD. 

Elisa – Year 5 I was in F1 when I came to JSD and Mr Ainscow was my teacher.  It took a whole year until I really understood everything that was going on around me. I always had Elenor and Juliette as my friends and because we could all speak French I never felt lonely.  I love coming to JSD because the activities are always fun, we do have a lot of fun here.  Everything we do is always so interesting.  I love that we have dress up days and International Ambassadors and proper art lessons.  

Kimi – Year 6 I was in Year 2 when I came to JSD and I spoke a little bit of English. Fiaz spoke Malay so I could always speak to him.  School here is different from my Malaysian school.  There are lots of buildings at my old school.  The parents couldn’t come into the school and see what we’ve been learning. The parents have to wait at the gate.  School at JSD is fun, we get to learn new things while having fun at the same time. It took me a year before I understood everything that was going on in the school.  I think JSD is the best school in the world. 

Anas – Year 6 I was in Year 4 when I came to JSD. I came from Libya and I was a very angry boy. I think I was angry because there was a war going on in Libya and a lot of bad things happen during war. I feel bad about how I acted then but now I know how to behave. In school in Libya the teacher hits the children all the time. There aren’t art lessons, or cooking, or PE or dress up days.  I really like being able to present my work to the whole class.  I didn’t do that in Libya. 

Chloe – Year 6 I was in F1 when I started at JSD and I only spoke Dutch. No one else spoke Dutch to me and I felt really left out and I didn’t want my mum to leave me. Once I made a friend, Anne Sophia, and then I wanted to learn English so I could play with her. We are still friends now, she lives in Oman and we go on holidays together.  It took a while to really understand everything. By the time I was in Year 2 I felt like my Dutch and English were the same. I remember learning table manners like keeping my mouth closed while chewing and I went home and told my parents that. They laughed! 

Kirill – Year 6 I spoke Russian and only a small amount of English when I came to JSD in Year 1. I was so scared!  I loved JSD even after the very first day. After being here for two weeks another Russian speaking girl came and we were so happy to speak to each other. I couldn’t understand the lessons about learning how to write. I could see the teacher speaking but just didn’t know what she was saying.  For a long time I just copied what the children around me wrote. After I few weeks I could understand some instructions but it took until the end of Year 3 to really understand all the lessons.  

Violeta – Year 5 I arrived in Year 3 and Miss Allen was my teacher. I didn’t know anything in English but I had been to school in Argentina and I could read and write in Spanish. When people asked me questions I would just nod.  I remember Miss Allen telling me to change my book but I didn’t understand what she was saying so I kept putting the book on the floor.  My friend Maddie was new too and she and I could speak Spanish and she was so helpful to me. JSD is smaller than my old school but my old school just had girls and it was strange to be around boys in the classroom and playground. I love how international our school is. Everybody looks different and speaks different languages, so I didn’t feel so different because we are all so different. I understood a little bit by the end of Year 3 but it was really in Year 4 that I felt like I knew what was going on.  

Luisa – Year 3 I spoke Dutch and German when I came to JSD in F1.  It was very confusing because I couldn’t understand what people were saying.  It took about one year before I really understood what was going on.  I remember wondering where people were going when they would like up and go to the Media Centre or the Music room or to PE. I loved going to Dutch lessons because Juf wanted to talk to me and we could understand each other. We also learn languages from the other children which is great. 

Omyma – Year 3 I came to this school in Year 1 and I wasn’t very well behaved. The rules were different in my old school in Libya. People kept asking me ‘what’s wrong?’ but I just couldn’t understand what was going on. I remember really missing my grandmother and grandfather and my aunty. Mum and Dad thought that this school would be a good school.  People at JSD are calm and friendly and when something happens, they’ve always got time to talk about things. I’ve learned so much at JSD.

Yet, amidst the sea of information, I felt a sense of excitement and determination to absorb as much as I could and to excel in my studies.

Beyond the academic aspects, the first day of school also provided me with valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability. From navigating the unfamiliar corridors to finding my way around the cafeteria, each challenge presented an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Through perseverance and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone, I was able to overcome obstacles and forge new connections with my peers.

The high school experience: a personal reflection.

Filled with growth and life lessons, the high school experience has been a journey worth the climb.

High school is arguably the most transformative time of a person’s life. My own experience has been filled with more memories, laughter, stress, and — most importantly, growth — than I ever could have anticipated when I began. 

The lessons I have learned about myself, about others, and about the world in the last four years have shaped who I am today, and that person is far from the naive 14-year-old girl who walked through those glass doors of La Salle nearly four years ago. I was oblivious to the overwhelming emotional distress that I would feel when I started high school. 

In some ways, it feels like an everyday battle. 

As a freshman, the struggle began with adjusting to what felt like a whole new world. I was desperately trying to make friends, considering I had only one. I never knew what it was like to feel alone in a school with so many people. I felt like I had to act a certain way or be a certain person in order to maintain a basic conversation with people in my classes or on my soccer team. 

Every day, my head was filled with an overwhelming concern about how I could manage to make myself look like someone with more friends than I actually had at the time. 

I remember constantly thinking, “I’ll start enjoying this at some point, right?” 

The truth is, I did. 

To anyone who is feeling the way I once felt, please know that those feelings do go away. By the end of my freshman year and into the next, I enjoyed myself. School wasn’t particularly challenging, and I was spending my weekends having fun with my friends and going to basketball games and sleepovers. I had finally created a routine and felt mostly content with my life, aside from daunting thoughts in my head telling me it was all a lie.

I think that’s something that all teenagers deal with. It comes with the age, the questions, “do my friends actually like me?” or “am I enough?” — “do people worry about me or have I tricked myself into thinking they do?” 

I continued to move throughout my sophomore year feeling a new level of comfort with my life. Then, the pandemic hit. 

The original two weeks of quarantine turned into two months, and then two years. The predictable high school experience I had become accustomed to was no longer my reality, and instead, high school turned into an atypical rollercoaster of isolation from all the essential parts of the experience. 

To say it was hard would be an understatement, but after the initial forced adjustment to a remote life, I was forced to be content without relying on others.

Without having to fear other people’s judgments of me or having to conceal myself in social situations to appear more “acceptable,” I gained independence and confidence within myself that I didn’t know existed.

Then finally — after over a year — the long-awaited return to school arrived. 

I rejoiced in my ability to thrive academically again and I was so relieved to feel like I was really learning. I reconnected with my friends, ate lunch outside, took finals, and then — after a blur of two months — the year ended. My junior year flew by like no other. 

When senior year rolled around, I felt out of place. I couldn’t imagine a world where I belonged to the oldest class at the school. In the beginning, it was odd getting used to, but after a few weeks, it was nothing but a thrill as I planned what the next weekend alongside my friends would hold. 

My friendships were flourishing and I was becoming closer and closer with people I had never really gotten to know. 

Unlike the three years prior, my senior year has felt like a stereotypical high school experience, and I could not be more grateful for it. 

I always thought of myself as someone who was above enjoying things like attending soccer games, getting ready for homecoming with my friends, singing karaoke in someone’s basement, or going to a trampoline park for an 18-year-old’s birthday party. 

The truth is, I’m not. 

I regret that I spent so long depriving myself of the things I love in order to fit a narrative that I created for myself. 

I love that I will graduate high school happier and more fulfilled than I ever felt during my other three years here. It feels like everything has finally come full circle, after all these years of feeling so alone. 

So yes, it was transformative. I am finally content with the person I have become and the life I have chosen to lead. I wouldn’t be the same without La Salle and I wouldn’t be the same without the people I’ve gotten to know here. 

I know that I will look back on my high school experience here, not feeling critical of the insecurities I have felt, but feeling grateful for the memories and lessons that came regardless of them.

9 Important Student Reflection Questions for the End of the Year

It’s the end of the school year, and you’re tired. Not to worry! This post will save you time. Use these student reflection questions to spark critical thinking about learning and growth. 

As we near the end of the school year, we face a tough paradox. Teachers and students, in general, are done. In the extended wake of a global pandemic, our resilience has been challenged. Distance learning, hybrid learning, remote learning, in person learning – we’ve done it all in the past few years. Surely, the roller coaster we’ve experienced and our attempt to “return to normal” provides us with some critical reflection opportunities.

WHY REFLECTION QUESTIONS?

If we’re only using our own experiences to reflect, we’re missing out on hearing students’ voices. What has their experience been like? We can’t just assume to know.

While we don’t always want to ask for feedback — it can be scary to put ourselves in that place of vulnerability — it’s important that we do. Students often provide some of the most insightful observation we need to grow as educators.

But, the type of feedback we receive depends on the questions we ask. In this post, you’ll find some important student reflection questions for learning.

In teacher circles, I’ve noticed some common topics of conversation. These conversations helped me to generate a list of questions I’m recommending we ask students. And, I hope by sharing this list here, it will help other teachers create targeted questions to get valuable feedback from students. After all, if we come out of this year with new ideas for improving teaching and learning, that’s a win.

The questions that follow are perfect for the end of a course – semester or entire year. They’re crafted in a way that you can simply change the wording to adapt them to your setting.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING STUDENT REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

• What (insert subject area) assignments helped you learn the best / most this year?
• How did you know you were learning?
• Which (insert subject area) concepts and skills do you feel the most confident with now?
• What type of (insert subject area) assignments were the most thought-provoking for you?
• Identify your effort level for this class.
• What type of feedback was the most motivating to you over the year?
• How much time did you spend on (insert subject area) work each day, approximately?
• How did you grow as a (insert subject area) student during this time? ( Think about what you learned about yourself – your skills, your study habits, your knowledge, your mindset, etc. )
• How does what you learned this year connect with other content areas and with real life?

TIPS FOR MAKING REFLECTION QUESTIONS WORK

In order to get the type of feedback we need to improve our craft moving forward, we need to think carefully about how we are posing these questions. Instead of Did you enjoy learning in this class? , we need to create questions that reduce the likelihood that students will use the question as an outlet to vent. When creating questions, I’m always trying to anticipate possible responses and set students up for providing the most helpful feedback.

If you decide to use reflection questions with students, I recommend giving them some answer choices. (It will help students stay focused.) For instance, when asking them about what type of feedback was the most motivating, include a list. Google Forms makes it simple!

WHAT ABOUT MORE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS?

At the end of a semester or school year, I’ve always asked my students specific reflection questions about ELA concepts – reading, writing, and so on. Their answers always motivate me. I look forward to reading them – both the good and the bad. We can still ask students to talk about how they grew as readers and writers…about what books they enjoyed most or what writing skills they feel more confident with now. But, we also need to prioritize asking them about learning overall.

Keep in mind, students’ feedback is NOT always helpful! Once you begin reading through the results, create a set of filtering questions to help you process the information. For example:

• Is the feedback specific enough to be helpful? (If not, don’t give it another thought.)
• If constructive, is there any truth to this feedback that is worth considering?
• What do I want to write down to remember for next year?
• What affirmations did I receive that confirm I’m on the right track?

I hope these questions help you collect meaningful thoughts about your course from students! I’ve always found reading their comments to be a mixture of joy (it’s so rewarding to know what’s going well) and frustration (sometimes criticism comes in blatant tones). Separate the wheat from the chaff, and take what you need to move forward confidently.

A Reflection on My First Internship: 5 Things I Learned

Now, five months after employment, I can truthfully say that taking the internship was the best decision I’ve made thus far in my college career. Although there were times I encountered some difficulties, the benefits far outnumbered the costs, and I feel that the experience empowered me to really dive headfirst into getting ready for my “real-world” career. Beyond learning how to conduct research and improve my writing skills, I’ve learned so many things about my field of study and internships in general. While I know it sounds cliché, I truly feel that the lessons I learned throughout my first internship experience will carry with me throughout my professional career. Here are just a few of the tidbits of information I’ve gathered over the past five months:

Former President Donald J. Trump’s penchant for fabrication and hyperbole has long been a core tenet of his bombastic persona and political messaging. Two campaigns, one term in the Oval Office and eight years later, Mr. Trump has loosened his grasp on the facts even more.

A comparison of his addresses before the Republican National Convention in 2016 and 2024 demonstrates how his relationship to the truth has changed, offering a glimpse of how he will likely cast himself on the campaign trail as he seeks to reclaim the White House.

In 2016, when he accepted the nomination after a bitter primary campaign, with doubts and skepticism lingering over his candidacy , Mr. Trump hewed closely to his prepared remarks and paid some heed to the facts.

Last Thursday, he stood before a party altered in his image, after four nights of allies, friends and former foes repeating falsehoods and exaggerations that have become a staple of his speeches, rallies and social media posts.

As a result, the address Mr. Trump gave in 2024 was akin to one he might deliver at a rally, and almost twice as long as his speech in 2016 by the amount of words. The number of inaccurate claims also doubled, according to a New York Times analysis. In the span of two minutes of his acceptance speech this year, he rattled off five exaggerated or false claims.

Here’s a breakdown.

Mr. Trump veered farther from the facts.

Whereas many of Mr. Trump’s claims eight years ago contained a kernel of truth or simply omitted context, many of his claims during his acceptance speech last week were flat-out false.
