'etharkkum thunindhavan' review: suriya shines in yet another social cause film, suriya shines as a progressive protagonist in 'etharkkum thunindhavan'..

Just like his real-life persona, Suriya has done his fair share to talk about social issues without compromising on commercial aspects in Etharkkum Thuninthavan . Directed by Pandiraj who has a track record of giving successful family-sentiment oriented subjects that have punch dialogues, duet songs and comedy tracks, Etharkum Thuninthavan also qualifies as a perfect family entertainer. The story is loosely based on the 2019 Pollachi sexual assault case. And so, with a rural backdrop in place, the emotional quotient and the scope for drama is high.

The villain in Etharkum Thuninthavan , played by Vinai Rai, uses youth to lure women into relationships and exploits them to seek favours from powerful men. Drawing the reference to Krishna in Mahabharata who saves Draupadi from humiliation, Suriya as Kannabiran plays a lawyer who saves victims affected by Vinai’s men. Through the film, the director does the good deed of spreading the word about the "Kavalan SOS" app for women’s safety which can be used during any emergency.

However, talking about the villain, the character wasn't really fleshed out. We know he is a bad person who does bad things, but we really don’t know why he is behaving the way he is behaving. With respect to the protagonist, there are a lot of mass action hero moments for Surya, but, the film kind of slips into the typical template where the hero saves a girl in danger, slow motion shots of the hero kicking the goons like a football and hitting them with an iron rod at the back of the head. Though they are good and watchable, the scenes aren't innovative, it felt like they are something that we are so used to seeing for a long time.

Review: ‘Hey Sinamika’ is a Love Story That's Just About Likeable

alsoRead-img

The dialogues of Etharkum Thuninthavan are a plus and a minus to the film. It is a mixed bag of cliche and noteworthy dialogues in almost equal proportions. For instance, there is an apparently massy dialogue where Suriya says, “If I wear a coat (referring to his lawyer's coat), the judge is different. But if I wear my dhoti, I am the judge myself (referring to the fact that he will get justice with his action sequences)”. But there are powerful dialogues too. For instance, when his wife is blackmailed with a private video , he asks, “Why do you need to be ashamed when none of it is your mistake”, and “Instead of teaching our men not to cry, we need to teach them not to make a woman cry”.

Watching Etharkum Thuninthavan , I got vaguely reminded of a physics concept “moment of inertia” that we probably studied in middle school. For example, When you are in a moving vehicle and suddenly when the driver applies a brake, you get this sudden shock and tend to almost fall because your body experiences a sudden change. The screenplay of the movie gave a very similar experience. Because just when you enjoy the entertaining sequences with the family galata, they throw some serious issues, and the clock is ticking to chase the villain. Just when you feel invested in that serious problem, they take you back to a humour track.

I understand that even though Kannabiran is a lawyer who deals with serious criminal cases, he also has a personal life, he gets married around the same time, he has fun with his family. But while the movie switches constantly from comedy to tragedy and tragedy to comedy, the transitions could have been a lot smoother to create a better experience.

What really felt heart-warming in the film is that they don't shame a woman for trusting a man and being in a relationship. The makers demand that the abusive men be accountable for exploiting the woman’s trust. I want to mention two other movies at this point. Rajnikanth’s Enthiran and Kamal Hassan’s Papanasam which is the Tamil remake of the Malayalam movie Dhrishyam .

In Papanasam , When the daughter accidentally kills her harasser, the father tries to save her by hook or by crook. At no point does he ask her not to be ashamed. Similarly, in Enthiran , the robot saves a woman from a building on fire. The woman jumps in front of a vehicle to kill herself thinking she lost her respect as the bystanders saw her nude when she was saved. The scientist Vasi teaches the robot on how to save a woman in future with her clothings on, even in such emergency situations. However, in Etharkum Thuninthavan, the entire scene where Kannabiran and his wife Adhini have the tough conversation, where Surya explains why the corrupted minds who secretly record the intimate video should be ashamed than she being ashamed of herself and her nudity in the video.

The best thing about Etharkkum Thunindhavan is that though the protagonist Suriya is the person who is directly affected by the tragedy, he goes through a personal trauma and despite that he doesn’t go after the villain because of personal vengeance. He stands for every woman just like how he stands for his own sister and wife. He constantly tries to make things work the legal way and loses his cool only when he is pushed beyond his boundaries and resorts to violence when all his legal options are exhausted. Not that it is right, but you can really empathize with his emotions there. And that’s why he is willing to face the legal repercussions of his actions.

While Etharkkum Thunindhavan is not perfect and has its own flaws, it is a decent attempt as a commercial entertainer with a social cause.

‘Jai Bhim’ movie review: Suriya is earnest and the film is honest. Yet, there are trade-offs

‘jai bhim’ is perhaps one of the boldest films to have come out of tamil cinema. it doesn’t dare turn its back on hitting where it hurts the most, and its politics is not weighed down by the presence of a star like suriya.

Srivatsan S

At one point in this nearly three-hour-long film, there is a goosebumps-raising moment that has a tribal woman — also the protagonist — turning her back on power, refusing to bow down to the system of dominance that has exploited the fruits of their labour, quite literally. Looking at it purely from the point of view of Tamil cinema’s masala conventions, it is essentially a “mass” scene written for a Dalit character to give her a chance to look at her oppressors in the eye and perhaps tell them: “You cannot break me.”

Senggeni (Lijomol Jose), the wife of Rajakannu (Manikandan, in yet another brilliant performance) who is fighting a lonely battle in the road to justice for husband’s custodial torture and death, gets this rousing moment because of her lawyer Chandru (Suriya). Or rather, because of the backing of a huge Tamil cinema star. Does it reflect reality? No. But does it work as a self-congratulatory, mass scene? Yes. It is also, thanks to Sean Roldan’s pummelling music, a really good stretch that communicates the intention that went into conceiving such a placement in the first place. Yet, something seems broken. Either the desired effect it has on us or the scene construction feels superficial at some level.

  • Cast: Suriya, Manikandan, Lijomol Jose, Prakash Raj, Rajisha Vijayan and Rao Ramesh
  • Director: Tha Se Gnanavel
  • Storyline: Based on real incidents that happened in the ‘90s Tamil Nadu, Jai Bhim casts light on a ghastly case and the subsequent long road to justice for the wife of a man from the Irular community who is falsely accused

Mind you, this superficiality doesn’t stem from Jai Bhim itself, but from the consciousness of having a Tamil cinema star playing a Saviour and leading from the front. Props to Suriya and to an extent Tha Se Gnanavel, the film, thankfully, doesn’t suffer from the onslaught of the Saviour Complex. For, Suriya comes across more of an ally here. But this doesn’t take away the point that the scene discussed above is a testament to the tiny trade-offs you will have to pay, in order to mainstream-ise stories of injustice and exploitation — all of which has now come out of the Dalit movement. Are we ready to forgive and forget this stream of consciousness for these trade-offs, is a good place to leave for introspection. While in the case of Jai Bhim , it is both a yes and no. But these are problems outside of the film.

Also Read | Why Suriya’s ‘Jai Bhim’ could be the most important film in his career

As for Jai Bhim , it is perhaps one of the boldest films to come out of Tamil cinema. Most of you might confuse its boldness with the film’s ghastly violence, showing the extreme of police brutality and custodial torture (let me spare the details, but some of these scenes are really disturbing). But that is not it. Consider the way it opens and you will understand where I am going with this.

The opening sequence has a police officer segregating suspects based on their caste. He asks, “ nee endha aalu (which people are you?).” If they are Dalits or from the tribal community, they are made to stand in a separate group while suspects from dominant and intermediate caste groups are given a free hand. False charges are slapped against Dalits; they are poached and preyed on by officers in-charge, to close the pending cases.

Perhaps what is more important is, there has never been a recent Tamil film where the names of dominant caste groups are explicitly mentioned, in the fear of the ripple effect it might create. There is, in fact, a scene where a dominant caste group member can be heard saying, “Unga kudusai-ya kollutha evalavu neram aagum (how long do you think it’ll take for us to set your house on fire) . ” But Jai Bhim doesn’t turn its back on all that. The politics here is not watered down; it is direct and takes an incisive look. It doesn’t punch down, but up. This is a film that strips down the individual components of caste, law enforcement and justice system and questions each of them on the witness stand.

What Tha Se Gnanavel also gets it right is the manner in which Dalits and people from tribal communities are exploited for their labour. Rajakannu earns a living by making bricks for his oppressors, but he cannot build a house for himself. He is called on every time there are rodents (or snakes) in the fields but isn’t allowed to touch or strike a conversation with a dominant caste member — he gets shooed away by a lady, when he says they come from the same village. For almost close to 40 minutes, we get to see the myriad ways caste takes shape in Rajakannu’s life and the irony plays out beautifully, even if this may sound slightly insensitive.

Jai Bhim turns into a courtroom drama when Rajakannu, along with three others, is forcefully taken into custody. Despite its run-time, there is not a single scene that looks dull, and there is something constantly happening. Even the courtroom scenes, which may suffer from familiarity in another film, brim with an undying spirit. Suriya plays a social activist-cum-lawyer Chandru, based on the real-life person. There is simmering anger in Suriya’s eyes that is even throughout. But the anger doesn’t reduce Suriya to a rabble rouser; it shows dignity too.

These are all the merits. Now let us address the elephant in the room: Jai Bhim , if anything, is a sad yet necessary addition to the long list of films about oppression that, if you come to think of it, may not transcend beyond the OTT crowd and reach its primary source audience — in this case, the largely ignored Irular community. Are we fake-congratulating ourselves by just giving them mainstream attention? How do we iron out this disparity?

Jai Bhim streams on Amazon Prime from November 2

Surya Vs Surya Review

Release date : Mar 05, 2015

123telugu.com Rating : 3/5

Director : Karthik Ghattamaneni

Producer : Malkapuram Shivakumar

Music Director : Satya Mahaveer

Starring : Nikhil Siddhartha, Tridha Choudhury, Madhubala…

With two back to back hits, young hero Nikhil is going great guns in his career. His is now back with his latest release Surya vs Surya, which has hit the screens today. Let’s see whether Nikhil scores a hatrick with this flick.

Surya(Nikhil) suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Porphyria which will kill him if he gets exposed to sunlight. Loosing no hope, Surya chooses to avoid the day time and manages his life during the nights.

Twist in the turn arises when a TV anchor named Sanjana(Tridha Chowdary) falls in love with him. As time passes by, she comes to know about Surya’s disease and breaks up with him. Rest of the story is about how Surya overcomes his problems and wins his love back.

Plus Point:-

The premise and story of the film are quite good. The way a cute romance is set up around this unique plot point deserves applause. Nikhil has improved big time and plays his role wonderfully. He displayed superb emotions in many scenes and has reached a maturity in his acting abilities. Nikhil’s look and performance will be major attractions of the film. Tridha Chowdary makes a decent debut. She looks beautiful and has also showcased good acting skills.

Comedy in the first half is quite entertaining and Tannikella Bharani must be given due credit for it. He along with Satya have played the supporting roles supremely well. It is also quite novel to see Tannikella Bharani in such a different and humorous role. Madhubala plays her mother’s role well.

The night college scenes and chemistry between the three friends Nikhil, Bharani and Satya is excellent. First half of the film is quite breezy and entertains the audience big time.

Minus Points:-

After setting up an interesting first half, pace of the film slows down completely. The movie gets emotional and some unnecessary scenes take center stage. The way the story has been narrated during this part leaves a lot to be desired. The major conflict point in the film is left behind after a while.

Even though the film has its moments, the relationship of the lead pair lacks clarity. The way they patch up during the climax looks hurried up. The track between Nikhil and Mast Ali is dragged at times. Irrelevant and unnecessary emotional songs take center stage and spoil the flow of the film.

Technical Aspects:-

Production values of the film are top notch. Hyderabad has been showcased in a superb light and major credit should go to the camera department. Music of the film is just average and could have been a lot better. Dialogues are ok and so is the art direction. Screenplay of the film is decent during the first half but gets confusing during the second.

Director Karthik Ghattamaneni makes an ok debut. He has chosen a good story and has also managed to set it up nicely till the first half. But after a point, he loses control as the film lacks proper direction.

On the whole, Surya vs Surya has some decent moments. Nikhil’s performance, interesting story and entertaining first half are major assets of this film. Nikhil’s popularity will bring in good crowds but a slow and predictable second half spoils the flow of the film and makes it just a one time watch.

Bommai Movie Review: Another psycho act by SJ Suryah in a film that's a treasure trove of cliches

Director radhamohan's bommai, starring sj suryah and priya bhavani shankar, is a weird film full of clichéd ideas. the film is illogical and unintentionally funny, says our review..

Listen to Story

SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar's Bommai released in theatres on June 16.

  • Bommai released in theatres today, June 16.
  • The film is directed by Radhamohan.
  • SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar play lead roles.

Release Date: 16 Jun, 2023

Looking at SJ Suryah’s filmography, it is quite understandable that he excels in playing psycho and villain roles. Be it Spyder or Mersal or New, he has proved his mettle as an actor. Not just that, even in films like Monster or Iraivi, he just impressed everyone with his superlative performances. But, what happens when we keep seeing SJ Suryah variations of the same character? Bommai is one such film that feels meticulous to watch. The main reason is SJ Suryah’s characterisation and his psycho act.

Raj Kumar (SJ Suryah) has a troubled past and lives alone in his Chennai home. He works as a painter in a mannequin factory. One day, he unboxes a mannequin, which has a defect in the chin area. It reminds him of his high-school sweetheart Nandini (Priya Bhavani Shankar). Nandini comes alive for Raj Kumar and together they imagine the life they want to live.

Raj Kumar is a man who has a traumatic childhood, which has affected him psychologically. His hallucinations make him see Nandini every day and converse with him. Add to it, Raj forgoes his medication, which also makes him aggressive. How does his hallucination turn him into a murderer and how it affects his life form the crux of the story.

Bommai is a film that does not fit into director Radhamohan’s brand of films, which are feel-good family dramas. It is a film about a faulty hero – a man with a psychological condition. While SJ Suryah was perfectly cast, the film’s storyline does not appear organic. The main reason is how the director has played to the clichés.

We see young Nandini getting lost in a temple festival. We have a bunch of police officers, who are extremely slow in finding out the culprit. We have dialogues which the audiences could predict even before it is mouthed by the characters on screen. For example, Raj Kumar and Nandini’s flashback scenes take us back to their school days. When the director included a temple festival sequence in it, you could guess how it could end even before it could begin.

The remaining stretch of the film is replete with SJ Suryah going overboard with his performance and poor dialogues. Some of the lines will remind you of Tiger Thangadurai’s ‘mokka’ (bad) jokes. No performance is enough to make you feel invested in the story. Instead, you unintentionally laugh at the weirdness unfolding on screen.

Take, for example, the scene where Raj Kumar talks to the mannequin (Nandini) and they exchange how they would want to marry each other. The dialogues make it absurd to invest in their love story. When the police officer, after learning about Raj Kumar’s condition, calls it a ‘fascinating love story,’ you are left in splits.

Priya Bhavani Shankar has delivered a performance that is forgettable. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs are jarring, and so does his background score.

If Bommai was as uninteresting as it could get, it has tacky VFX in a dreamy sequence. Now, that’s two films with tacky VFX that have graced the screens today, June 16. If you’re wondering what the other one is, we will spell it for you - Adipurush it is!

It’s time for Suriya fans to rejoice as the actor has finally commenced shooting for his next film, tentatively titled Suriya 44. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, who is known for helming the 2023 blockbuster Jigarthanda DoubleX, the film also stars Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Karuna Karan and Joju George in the lead roles.

On Sunday, both the actor and the director took to their Instagram accounts and shared a special video announcing that the shooting for the film has begun and also revealed the actor’s first look from the project.

The highlight of the clip was Suriya’s retro look which left the audience amazed.

In the video, Suriya is seen sitting on a ledge with suitcases, facing his back at the camera and looking at the sea. After the clap, the camera zooms in with intriguing music playing in the background, he then turns around and glares before giving an evil sarcastic smile. The actor then asks the camera to come close with an intense look on his face.

The Jai Bhim actor was dressed in a multicoloured striped shirt, a retro long mullet hairstyle and a Fu-Manchu-style moustache.

“Lights! Camera!! Action!!! #suriya44 #lovelaughterwar #akarthiksubbarajpadam Shoot in progress…,” Suriya captioned the video.

Karthik, on the other hand, wrote, “The First Shot…#Suriya44.”

“Everybody is a gangster, till you see the monster,” wrote another fan.

Suriya made the official announcement of the film earlier in March this year by sharing a poster of Suriya 44. The poster featured an arrow passing through a log of wood that was burning against the fire. “New beginnings..! Need all your good wishes! #LoveLaughterWar @karthiksubburaj,” the actor wrote on his X account.
