What you need to know

• You can share data between all Telstra Upfront mobile and Upfront data plans under the same account.
• Data sharing is available automatically - you will not need to switch it on.
• Once you run out of your data sharing pool, mobile download speeds will slow down to 1.5Mbps till the following month.

As of March 2021, Telstra has reintroduced data sharing between all of its Upfront mobile and Upfront data plans under the same account. Previously, data sharing was limited to its family and data share SIM plans only.

Sign up to any of Telstra's Upfront plans or Upfront data plans and get access to data sharing.

You won't need to activate data sharing yourself. Once these plans are under the same account, Telstra data sharing will automatically be available across all plans.

• Data is automatically shared between up to 10 separate Upfront plans on the same account
• Plans are paid automatically at the start of the month , with no billing
• Get access to 30 minutes of international calls and Telstra Plus rewards

Data sharing can't be disabled and all users on the account can access all the data with no restrictions.

Once the entire pool has been used up, all linked accounts will have their download speed capped at 1.5Mbps until the following month.

Communicating with clients, suppliers, customers and even your own staff allows the business to be productive, efficient and most importantly, stay in business. That’s why business plans from telcos exist – and in particular, Telstra Business plans.

With the way technology has evolved and integrated itself within both our personal and working lives, communicating has also become easier to do, with the majority of the population having access to a phone. As a result, having a suitable phone and phone plan has become essential for a successful business.

Despite the positive impact phones have on business, choosing the best phone plan for your business is a decision that you shouldn’t take lightly, with plenty of telcos offering deals and plans to suit all needs.  As one of the biggest telcos in Australia, it’s no surprise that Telstra has many options for your business, regardless of how big or small it is. With plenty of options for both established premises as well as those who are constantly on the move, Telstra is a worthwhile option to consider.

Telstra Business Plans

Telstra Business plans come in all shapes and sizes, regardless if you have to be on call 24/7 or simply work a few days a week. For those who also like a bit of play with their work, all Telstra small business plans include unlimited data within Australia (speed-capped at 1.5Mbps when you surpass your monthly data allowance) and data sharing between devices on the same account (although you can’t share unlimited data – not that you’d need to, because everyone would have it). Every plan except for the $55 small plan includes 5G access. Customers can add on the international calls pack for $10 per month, and get unlimited talk and text to 23 selected countries.

Telstra SIM Only Business Plans

Starting from $55 per month, Telstra offers four SIM Only plans, ideal for those who already have a mobile. Available without any contracts, Telstra Business plans offer 40GB on the smallest plan and 180GB on the largest plan. The plans are very similar to Telstra’s upfront plans . These plans are not available to enterprise customers. Here are all of the plans:

• Small : 40GB for $55 per month (Does not include 5G access)
• Medium : 80GB for $65 per month
• Large : 120GB for $85 per month
• Extra Large : 180GB for $115 per month

Telstra Business plans (except for the Small plan) also include three months of MYOB Essentials, perfect for any small or medium-sized business looking for accounting software. A subscription service applies after three months.

Should I get a Telstra Upfront plan or a Telstra Business plan?

You’ll find that Telstra’s Business plans are actually very similar to Telstra’s Upfront plans. One of the biggest differences is that you’ll need an ABN to sign up on a Telstra Business plan, although this isn’t necessary for a Telstra Upfront plan.

Beyond that, there’s no difference, apart from some perks like data-free music streaming on Telstra Upfront plans and three months of MYOB essentials on Telstra Business plans (excluding the small plan).

Mobiles on a Plan

Telstra offers a variety of 12 month and 24 month phone plans, allowing customers to find the best for their business. In addition to all of the services provided with the plan, you’ll be able to choose from the latest phones on offer, including the iPhone 12 , the Samsung Galaxy S21 and the OPPO Find X3 Pro .

Telstra Enterprise Phone Plans

For larger businesses, Telstra offers a wide range of plans and bundles to allow for an office expansion or simply an upgrade. The majority of Telstra Enterprise plans focus heavily on big teams and workplace productivity (including options to sign up for business-oriented software), aimed more towards the mobile workforce, so it’s best to contact your local Telstra provider for the best deals and prices for your business. You’ll need to do this anyway, as Telstra Enterprise services rely on a callback service to sign up.

How do Telstra Business plans compare to Optus and Vodafone?

It should come as no surprise that Optus and Vodafone both offer business ready phone plans. Compared to Optus and Vodafone, Telstra offers the most expensive plans, with plans starting at $55 per month for 40GB of data, while Optus business plans start at $45 for 20GB (offering very identical plans to its consumer plans). Vodafone on the other hand does things a bit differently, incentivising that you get a Vodafone Infinite plan (as in, one of its personal plans, which start at $40 for 10GB) and then add on a SIM Only Team Plan for every team member you have (which is $25 per month for unlimited data with 2Mbps speeds).

Each provider offers unlimited data, with Vodafone offering different unlimited speeds depending on your selected plan. Across all three providers, 5G access is included (except for Telstra’s Small plan). Inclusions are also different from provider to provider – Telstra is the only one of the three to offer the MYOB Essentials three month trial, Optus is the only one that offers Optus Sport, and Vodafone offers faster unlimited speeds (ranging from 2Mbps to 25Mbps, depending on the plan). Extras are added and removed by these providers from time to time, so it’s worth comparing them when you sign up for a plan.

Are Telstra Business plans worth it?

With phone use as individual as a business, it can be tough to decide which plan is the best fit for your circumstances. Some businesses rely heavily on data packages, while others rely solely on phone calls and messaging, while some rarely relying on their phones at all. As a result, it’s always recommended that you do your own research into what’s on offer and to think ahead about how you’ll be using your business phone in the future.

If you’re the sole operator, there isn’t much difference between a small business plan and a personal plan from Telstra, with the business plans priced very similarly. If you’re running a small or medium-sized business, it might be worth getting several Telstra Business plans on the same account and giving the SIM’s to your employees. If you’re running a large business, it might be worth getting in touch with Telstra directly through their Enterprise service.

Telstra has always been regarded as a leader of telecommunications in Australia, providing a wide range of services and products to suit the needs of both businesses and individuals. Telstra business NBN plans review

Telstra NBN business plans come at a premium price but include some great features and a full suite of support options.

​Anyone familiar with Telstra plans—business or residential, mobile or internet—likely knows that they tend to attract a premium monthly price. Telstra business NBN is no exception to this rule with the most expensive comparable plans in our database. Still, that extra monthly cost comes with great perks, including a static IP address and a modem-router with 4G backup . It’ll take a couple of years of connection to avoid the modem-router repayment fee, though, and some of the other features cost extra, too.

Opt for a Telstra business NBN plan if you don’t mind paying more for perks and a wide range of support options, but there are better value alternatives out there if your main concern is price and speed.

Telstra business NBN plans value for money

​ Telstra has made a name for itself by offering speedy residential NBN plans with unlimited data , albeit at a premium price, and that trend is no different for the provider’s NBN business plans. Interestingly, the cheapest Telstra business internet plan isn’t an NBN offering; instead, it’s a rare ADSL2+ plan.

Whether you want more speed, better customer service, or just a better deal on your home internet , you can find everything you need to know about NBN plans by following the link below. 

In terms of our database, the Telstra Unlimited Business Internet plan was the only business ADSL2+ offering at the time of writing, and one of only two in our comparison engine across business and residential plans.

For not a whole lot more per month, you can get the Telstra Business NBN Unlimited Data plan, though, which is typically priced at $110 per month and comes with 50Mbps typical download speeds during business hours.

While those download speeds are great, the pricing is less desirable and beaten by every other business NBN provider in our database for typical monthly pricing. The only proviso there is that Aussie Broadband offers ever-so-slightly slower download speeds (49Mbps), while iiNet and TPG offer some data-capped plans (although they also have cheaper unlimited offerings, too). You’re better off looking at the Optus Internet Everyday – NBN plan, the iiNet Business NBN 50 Value plan or the TPG NBN 50 L Business Bundle if you’re after a cheaper plan with the same speeds and similar inclusions.

The only other business NBN alternative Telstra currently offers is the Business NBN Unlimited Data + Premium Speed plan, which typically costs $140 per month for 100Mbps typical business-hours speeds.

It’s an identical story for Telstra’s business NBN 100 plan as it is for its NBN 50 plan above: you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of our comparison engine to find this plan with typical monthly pricing. Optus and Exetel offer the same 100Mbps business-hours download speeds for a noticeably cheaper monthly fee, with Aussie Broadband also cheaper and just behind at 99Mbps. Taking the full package into account, we’d advise going with the Optus Internet Everyday Fast – NBN plan over Telstra’s NBN 100 alternative.

Telstra business NBN features and perks

If you’re a business that’s purely concerned with dollars-to-data value, there are more cost-effective alternatives to a Telstra business NBN plan. That said, if you fancy a business NBN plan with some great inclusions, Telstra puts big ticks in the core boxes on the perks front. All of Telstra’s business internet plans come with included phone line rental as well as local and national calls but, strangely, you have to pay extra for the actual landline phone.

As is the trend with business NBN plans, all of Telstra’s business NBN plans come with a static IP address, which makes it easier to configure remote access, more reliable communication, server hosting and virtual private network (VPN) connections .

Additionally, Telstra also bundles a preconfigured, self-installed Telstra Business Smart Modem with 4G mobile backup. While this modem-router has a $0 upfront cost, you’ll have to pay a $216 fee if you cancel after the first month. This device fee diminishes the longer you stay connected. Stick around for 24 months, and you don’t have to pay anything extra for the Telstra Business Smart Modem.

One of the other things we like about the Telstra business NBN plans is transparency around speeds. This starts with expected download and upload speeds (the latter is rare), but you’ll also be offered maximum speed estimates based on the NBN technology servicing your business address, too.

After you’ve first signed up, Telstra also offers a dedicated connection manager to assist with any questions or issues while you get connected. Once you’re up and running, there are self-guided support steps on the Telstra website for troubleshooting issues. There’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Telstra describes this optional support service as a tailored concierge experience, and while it includes 24/7 support for Telstra and non-Telstra tech, it does cost an additional $60 per month.

Telstra’s new plans let you share data allowance with other devices

Now Telstra customers can connect up to four devices and draw from a single pool of data with the new Every Day Connect Data Share Package.

The moves comes after Telstra revealed that 80 per cent of Australians use multiple devices like smartphones and tablets with many having separate data plans.

Karsten Wildberger, Telstra’s group managing director consumer, said the decision to introduce the shared data packages was in response to customer feedback.

“With people more connected than ever before, customers are looking for a simple solution that will allow them to manage their usage across all their devices and make their data allowance go further,” he said.

 “Telstra’s Every Day Connect Data Share Packages will help fill that gap and allow customers to share their monthly mobile data allowance between their mobile and multiple data devices – including tablets and laptops – all under one package.

 “This streamlined approach to data sharing is about making it simple for our customers to use all the mobile data they are paying for, manage it on one monthly bill and top up their usage easily if required.”

 An $80 Every Day Connect Data Share package will get you $600 worth of calls, unlimited SMS and 1.1GB of data to share with one other device.

Users get one extra SIM with that package to share data between their smartphone and tablet, for example.

Each additional SIM card to extend the sharing to up to four devices will cost an extra $10 per extra SIM per month.

But as an added bonus, customers who take up the plan before December 31, 2013 will receive an additional 1GB of data to share for 12 months.

​Telstra has followed Optus' lead, cutting the costs for mobile data sharing -- but unlike Optus, the prices are only coming down for Telstra business customers.

Telstra introduced data sharing to customers late in 2013 with the launch of new Data Share packages that could be bundled with its Every Day Connect plans. However, users that wanted to share their data plan with additional devices such as tablets were required to pay $10 per device per month for the privilege.

Just one day after Optus announced that it would offer data sharing across all its consumer plans for a one-off SIM cost of AU$5 per device, Telstra has updated its plan structure once more to offer a similar data pooling deal. But unlike Optus, you'll need to be a business customer to take advantage of the offer.

With the launch of its EasyShare Business plans Telstra is allowing small-to-medium businesses to "automatically pool data allowances across multiple services". The telco is also providing a free data SIM (on all plans except the entry-level 'S' plan) to facilitate this.

But that's where the freebies end -- additional data SIMs (Telstra allows sharing with up to five Data Share SIMs per plan) will still require a $10 per month access fee, according to the plan break-down on Telstra's website .

Will Irving, group managing director of Telstra Business, said the new plans "make it easy for businesses to unleash the power of mobility," adding that new users would also get bonus data to sweeten the deal.

"We know that when customers get a new smartphone or tablet they use it more than usual," he said. "Our new plans will provide customers with an extra 25GB of domestic data and an unlimited standard voice/SMS/MMS to standard Australian numbers, to use in Australia for the first month."

Other features of the plans include a 70 percent reduction in excess data charges (down to 3 cents per MB), free voice calls between eligible mobiles on the same account and no voice call flag fall.

Telstra reveals data sharing plans

In confirming the no lock-in plans revealed by ZDNet last week , Telstra also announced plans to allow customers to share their monthly data allowances across multiple devices.

On Saturday, Telstra confirmed that the company will offer the no lock-in plans to customers from Tuesday, and also revealed that it would also bring in brand new plans that would let customers share data allowances across multiple devices, whether that be a smartphone, tablet, or multiple smartphones for one family.

Telstra hasn't confirmed when these plans will be released, but has said they will be released in the next few months.

AT&T and Verizon in the US already currently offer data-share plans. Verizon's plans were met with criticism last year , with some suggesting that it was Verizon's way of pushing people away from unlimited data plans onto capped data plans.

No Australian mobile telecommunications company has unlimited data plans currently, but with the release of Telstra's no lock-in plans, the telco is shifting against offering customers more data for less money on their mobile plans.

Telstra's chief customer officer Gordon Ballantyne said that the new plans will allow customers to consider their phone plans on a month-by-month basis, rather than being locked in for 12 or 24 months.

"Telstra No Lock-In Plans give customers who are still considering a switch to Telstra the flexibility to test the network for themselves without being tied into a long-term contract," he said.

Limit Your Data Usage With These Plans and Phone Settings

Switching to a low-data plan can set a hard limit on the time you spend scrolling TikTok, eye-glazing at YouTube, or whatever your personal phone kick happens to be.

In particular, a prepaid plan cuts off your data once you’ve hit your limit, but you still have full access to calls and SMS. The exceptions are felix and Vodafone, which limit your download speeds to 1.5Mbps once you’ve reached your monthly data cap, instead of cutting you off. Unfortunately, these two providers don’t offer plans with particularly low data allowances.

To help keep you on track, most phones have at least some kind of built-in feature to help limit data usage. That said, Android users will benefit more than those with an iPhone when it comes to self-imposed techno-castigation.

Cheap mobile plans with low data

The cheapest plan in WhistleOut’s database right now is Dodo’s 2GB plan for $10 per month. Dodo plans aren’t prepaid, but it will limit you to a paltry 256kbps once you’ve gone over. 

Even for a digital detoxer, this plan could make life difficult. You might even end up spending more time thinking about your phone, rather than less, if only to make sure you use your 2GB as efficiently as possible.

If you’re keen on cutting back, but with a little less stress, mobile plans around the 10GB mark could be a good idea. While some are limited to 4G connectivity, don’t let that deter you – 4G can reach similar speeds to an NBN 100 plan. If you need faster speeds on your phone, let’s face it: a low-data plan probably isn’t on the cards.

You might even consider limiting yourself to Telstra Network resellers. These mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) still need to offer cheap plans to stay competitive, but pay a premium for access to Telstra’s towers. As such, they tend to include less data than providers on the Optus and Vodafone networks.

Setting data usage limits on your phone

While you can set up mobile data usage limits on Android and iPhone, remember that your phone will auto-connect to WiFi when you’re at home.

You might find it useful to turn off WiFi – your low-data mobile plan might end up being more than you need if your home internet plan does all the heavy lifting.

A quick tip for limiting data usage on Android

Androids have a lot of options for limiting screen time and data usage, but probably the most useful are warnings and limits based on how much mobile data you’ve used. 

Your menu system might differ a little based on which Android phone you have, but the basic process is Settings > Network and internet > Internet and tap the Settings icon next to your 4G or 5G connection. 

Scroll down and select Data warning and limit and toggle on Set data warning and/or Set data limit . Tap on either setting and enter the number of GB you’d like to be limited to (or warned about) each month.

These settings will only measure and affect your mobile data and won’t track or cut off WiFi usage.

How to limit data usage on iPhone

iPhones don’t let you set up alert notifications based on when you’ve used a certain amount of data within a given time period, but there are still some things you can do to limit your usage.

The first is ‘Low Data Mode’, which stops automatic updates and background tasks while you’re not connected to WiFi. While this doesn’t stop you from using the internet, it can make going with a low-data plan more viable because it means you won’t suddenly be cut off thanks to an unexpected update.

To enable Low Data Mode, go to Settings > Mobile > Select your current SIM > Data Mode and then select Low Data Mode . You can also disable mobile data for specific apps or services. Go to Settings > scroll to your chosen app and select it, then toggle Mobile Data off.

Leaked presentation reveals Microsoft's astounding plan to ramp up data-center capacity for the AI boom

• Microsoft's data-center capacity jumped in recent quarters, a leaked internal presentation shows.
• The company is planning even faster data-center growth in the coming quarters.
• Microsoft delivered "record-level GPU capacity," according to the presentation.

Microsoft significantly expanded its data-center capacity recently and plans to ramp up growth to astounding levels going forward, according to an internal document obtained by Business Insider.

Since July 2023, the start of Microsoft's latest fiscal year, the company delivered more than 500 megawatts of new data-center capacity , the document disclosed.

This document was part of a confidential slide deck from the company's Cloud Operations and Innovation team that was presented earlier this year.

Under the heading "Commercial Cloud and AI Demands: Fueling our Expansion," the document said Microsoft surpassed 5 gigawatts of total data-center installed capacity in the first half of its latest fiscal year.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence and huge foundation models is fueling a new data-center boom . Microsoft is leading the way through its partnership with OpenAI , the startup behind ChatGPT and GPT-4 .

These AI models need to be trained on mountains of data and then fine-tuned intensely. That takes thousands of GPUs and a pile of other related gear that's housed in huge data centers. These facilities use so much power that their capacity is measured in megawatts and gigawatts of electricity.

Shaolei Ren , an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of California, Riverside, said Microsoft's 5 gigawatts of installed data-center capacity, if fully used, would be equivalent to Hong Kong or Portugal's annual electricity consumption.

"Astonishing speed"

It doesn't stop there. The software giant laid out even more radical growth plans for its data-center empire in the document obtained by BI.

"With a strong Commercial Cloud business, our goal is clear," Microsoft said in this part of the slide presentation.

Microsoft wants to double new data-center capacity in the second half of its fiscal year. This runs from early 2024 to the middle of this year.

In the first half of Microsoft's 2025 fiscal year, which runs from early July through the end of 2024, the company aims to "achieve 3x growth" in new data-center capacity.

This requires Microsoft to deliver more than 200 megawatts in data-center capacity every month.

"This is an astonishing speed," Ren told BI. "This is a very large data-center capacity."

Ren said Microsoft's capacity plans suggested the company was either seeing huge demand or simply wanting to stay competitive by securing future power capacity that otherwise might be taken by competitors.

He added that this also raised questions about the environmental consequences of adding such a large data-center footprint, given the carbon emissions and water consumption of the facilities.

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment.

'Record-level GPU capacity'

The company is also securing a record number of GPUs to handle new AI workloads in data centers.

In the second half of last year, Microsoft delivered "record-level GPU capacity," more than doubling its total installed GPU base, the document said, without mentioning actual numbers.

Microsoft's GPU footprint expanded into 39 additional data centers in this period, and the company now has "AI clusters" live in 98 locations globally.

Google plans to invest $2 billion to build data center in northeast Indiana, officials say

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Google plans to invest $2 billion to build a data center in northeastern Indiana that will help power its artificial intelligence technology and cloud business, company and state officials said Friday.

The data center planned for Fort Wayne was announced in January. But Google disclosed the project’s cost Friday and said it is expected to create up to new 200 jobs, including data center technicians and support services, The Journal Gazette reported.

The data center in the city about 120 miles (190 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis will help power Google’s “AI innovations and growing Google Cloud business for customers across the world,” Gov. Eric Holcomb’s office said in a news release.

Google said the new data center will join a network of Google-owned-and-operated data centers across the globe that “keep the internet humming” and power digital services such as Google Cloud, Gmail, Search and Maps.

“Together, Fort Wayne and Google will help power the digital future, including AI innovation across our enterprise and consumer services,” said Joe Kava, Google’s vice president of data centers.

Friday’s announcement came one day after Amazon’s cloud computing unit Amazon Web Services said it plans to invest $11 billion to build a data center in northern Indiana near the town of New Carlisle, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of South Bend. That project is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs.
