Eligibility Criteria for University of Waterloo Scholarships

To be eligible for University of Waterloo Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Required Languages:  English
• Eligible Countries:  All World Countries
• Candidates who have the good academic standing (normally a minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level; normally a minimum 75% average at the graduate level) are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
• The applicants must be full-time undergraduate and graduate students in any faculty who wish to participate in an international experience in Israel, including a minimally-paid or volunteer international co-op work placement, a volunteer placement, an academic exchange or a study term related to academic requirements.
• International students with a valid Canadian study permit who are registered full time and assessed international tuition fees.
• Normally given to students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper).
• Will normally only be given to students entering the first term of their program (term 1.0).
• Students must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty.
• Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements.
• This award could be in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., UW Graduate Scholarship, OGS,  etc). Note: scholarships are different than sponsorship – see next bullet.
• Normally, students should not be concurrently receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc) or be fully or partially self-funded in excess of the Faculty minimum levels of support.
• Students grand-parented under the existing IMSA program cannot be nominated for an IMAE; however, a student previously awarded an IMSA for a previously completed master’s degree can be nominated for an IMAE.
• Students will be automatically considered for this award based on their application for admission. Departments and/or Faculty will define their own internal process by which they select recipients based on the eligibility criteria and allocation.
• Faculties may impose stricter eligibility criteria as appropriate.

Here are the University of Waterloo Graduate scholarships and their key details:

Scholarship Value

To the completion of the third year of the doctorate program, term 9.0, eligible foreign students who are enrolled full-time in a doctoral program and who were admitted from a master’s degree will receive an IDSA valued at $15,420 each year ($5,140 per term). The eligible student will receive an IDSA4 in year 4 (terms 10.0 to 12.0), financed as follows: two-thirds from the university/faculty in the amount of $3,427 per term as an award, and one-third from the department/supervisor in the amount of $1,713 each term as an award.

All qualified students who entered a Ph.D. program straight from a bachelor’s degree will get an IDSA worth $5,140* from terms 4.0 to 12.0.

Eligibility Criteria

International graduate students, with a valid Canadian study permit, registered full-time in a MA, MASC, MES, MFA, MMATH (except coursework programs) or MSC (except coursework programs) degree program will receive an IMSA for two years (up to term 6.0). 

Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program, and not hold external awards, a tuition award (e.g., PSI or Lazaridis Tuition Awards), or sponsorships or be self-funded more than the value of minimum Ph.D. funding.

Scholarship Value: Award valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five terms. Eligibility Criteria: International students with a valid Canadian study permit who are registered full-time and assessed international tuition fees. 

The IMAE awards under the University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarships are generally given to students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper). These awards are usually only given to students entering the first term of their program (term 1.0). Students must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty. Moreover, students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have special probationary admission requirements. 

Scholarship Value: Each OGS and QEII-GSST is worth up to $15,000 annually. The prize is given out in installments of $5,000 over either two or three periods.

Eligibility Criteria: Academic merit is the defining criterion for the selection of the OTS recipients.

• The successful OGS candidates’ scholarships will start in 2023–2024. Winter 2024, autumn 2023, or spring 2023 are the permitted start periods.
• Recipients must be new/incoming doctoral students who are applying for admission for the upcoming Spring, Fall, or Winter terms.
• Recipients must be international students who hold a valid Canadian study permit and who do not qualify for an exemption to the higher international tuition and fees; should an OTS recipient obtain permanent residency status after the beginning of the first term of study, s/he will continue to be eligible for the OTS for the balance of his/her renewable OTS for a total of four years.
• Recipients must be intending to pursue full-time graduate studies at the doctoral level in a degree-granting program.
• Recipients must have achieved a first-class average (A-/80% Ontario equivalent) in each of the two years of full-time study before being awarded the OTS.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation – Doctoral Scholarship

Up to fifteen new scholarships are given each year by the Trudeau Scholars Programme to deserving doctorate students in the social sciences and humanities. With regard to one or more of the Foundation’s four themes—human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment—the Foundation supports Ph.D. candidates who are engaged in research that addresses a pressing contemporary issue. The Trudeau Scholars are involved in their disciplines, where they will likely rise to prominence on a national and international level.

Scholarship Value: The annual value of the award is up to $60,000 per year for a maximum of three years ($40,000 per year to cover tuition and reasonable living expenses plus up to $20,000 per year as a research and travel allowance).

Eligibility Criteria: You must be already accepted into or in year one, two, or three of a full-time doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences 

• Your doctoral work must relate to at least one of the Foundation’s Four Themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, People and their Natural Environment.
• You must be a Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution, or a non-Canadian (permanent resident or foreign national) enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

International Doctoral Student Award (IDSA)

Scholarship Value The award value and duration vary depending on the number of terms the student has been enrolled in a program; whether or not they were admitted from a master’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, or transferred from a master’s to a Ph.D.; and the number of terms in which the student has previously received the award. The value of a full IDSA/IDSA4 is approximately the difference in tuition between full-time domestic Ph.D. and full-time international Ph.D. students.

Eligibility Criteria of IDSA Award

International graduate students, with a valid Canadian study permit, registered full-time in a doctoral program at the University of Waterloo. Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program. Students cannot be concurrently in receipt of external awards, tuition awards (e.g., PSI or Lazaridis Tuition Awards), sponsorships or be self-funded in excess of the value of minimum PhD funding.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program was developed to draw in top-tier Ph.D. candidates, keep them in Canada, and position the country as a global leader in research and higher education. Waterloo Apple PhD Fellowship in Data Science and Machine Learning

The funding will establish a Fellowship Fund to support PhD candidates in Data Science and Machine Learning at the University of Waterloo. Fellowships will be offered starting in 2022.

An Apple PhD Fellow will receive $37,500/year for two years. Up to two fellowships will be awarded each year for two years starting in 2022.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

• Students must be in the 2 nd or 3 rd year of their PhD program in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
• Students must remain registered full-time and be in good standing in their PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship.
• Proposed research must be in the areas of Data Science or Machine Learning.
• Students can receive this award in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., OGS, NSERC, etc.)
• Students already supported by a comparable industry award at the time of selection are not eligible.
• Applications are evaluated on the basis of students' academic achievements, leadership contributions and potential, and the strength of their research proposal.

Getting a graduate degree can be a smart money move in the long run, but first, you’ll have to get over a big short-term hurdle: how to pay for grad school. Unlike a four-year program, the cost of a grad degree can vary widely, from $30,000 to $120,000 or more.  

Luckily, there are a lot of options to pay for grad school. We’ll help you zero in on the best choice so you can start your new career off on the right foot when you get to the other side.

Overview of Financing for Grad School

Paying for grad school isn’t too dissimilar from paying for your undergrad studies. Just like before, you’ll need to come up with a plan to finance your education. Unless you were born to a wealthy family, chances are you’ll need to cobble together funding from a few different places, like most people. 

Here are the main strategies for how to pay for a graduate degree:

• Scholarships and grants
• Fellowships and assistantships
• Student loans

The best way to pay for grad school is by getting free money, and there’s actually quite a lot of it around if you look for it. 

The quickest way to get started down this path is by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as you can because many scholarships and grants are given out on a first-come first-serve basis. 

The FAFSA becomes available every October 1 for the upcoming school year.

The FAFSA will point out any federal or school-based aid available to you, but many other organizations offer grants and scholarships too. Plan on spending a few hours scouting out as many of these scholarship options as you can. Check with local, state, and tribal governments, nonprofit organizations, industry groups, businesses, and aggregator websites like Fastweb . 

Take notes on the deadlines, award amounts, and requirements. Put this information in a spreadsheet so you have your own custom menu of free money that you can easily refer to.

Many graduate programs hire their own students to help perform the work of the university. As a teaching assistant, for example, you may be responsible for leading the lab portion of an undergraduate course in your area of study. As a research assistant, you may even be paid to conduct research on your own thesis project. 

In addition to a modest living stipend , some universities even offer tuition waivers for fellows and students. In the biology field, for example, it’s quite common for graduate students to not have to pay anything at all for their graduate degree because all expenses are covered through fellowships and assistantships. This may not be the case with every graduate program, however. 

About 54% of graduate students end up taking out student loans to further their education. Since student loans aren’t free and can cause many headaches after you graduate, it’s best to only use loans to cover any remaining gaps after you’ve received as much free financial aid as possible.

Student loans for grad school can be broken down into the same two categories you might be familiar with from your undergrad days: federal and private student loans .

• Federal student loans: You apply for these when you fill out the FAFSA. Federal student loans are the best choice because they’re often cheaper and come with far more protections and repayment options to make your post-graduation life easier. 
• Private student loans: While they are best left as a last resort, you can apply for these loans with individual lenders. Your rates may be higher and lenders are far less willing to work with you if you ran into financial snags after you graduate. 

As an example of how federal student loans are better than private student loans, payments on federal student loans were paused at 0% interest in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Private student loan borrowers have had no such reprieve. 

Most people use a combination of free aid, loans, fellowships, and assistantships when figuring out how to pay for grad school. But there are a few other options too:

• Personal savings: If you’ve been saving up in a 529 plan or other savings account , this is obviously the best choice before taking out loans, but not everyone has savings available.
• IRA savings: The IRS allows you to use funds from your IRA to pay for “ qualified education expenses ” without charging the normal 10% early withdrawal penalty if you’re under age 59 ½.  
• Employer reimbursement: If you’re fortunate enough to be going back to school for a degree that your current employer can benefit from, ask if it’ll reimburse all or a portion of the cost. 
• Federal work-study: Not just for undergrads, federal work-study jobs are also available for qualifying grad students. When you fill out the FAFSA, you’ll be notified if you’re eligible or not.

Figuring out how to get money to pay for grad school can be tough, but luckily it’s probably not as hard as grad school itself will be. Here are some general tips to keep in mind:

• Sort out your undergraduate loans: Most lenders—federal and private—allow you to defer payment on your undergraduate loans if you return to school, but you’ll need to notify them. 
• Know the norms of your program: Grad school can be horrendously expensive, like if you’re getting an MBA at a private school, or relatively affordable, like if you’re studying wildlife biology at an in-state public college. • Do a cost-benefit analysis and post-graduation budget: Many people go to grad school as a default since they’re not sure what to do yet. Instead, try putting together a realistic budget with student loan payments and a starting salary to ensure getting a grad degree makes financial sense too. 
• Watch for career-specific loan forgiveness programs: Some high-demand professionals, like teachers, may qualify for special programs to have their student loans forgiven.  
• Read the fine print: Always read the entire contract, even for free financial aid. Some grants, for example, can be converted to loans if you don’t uphold the terms of the contract.

The PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare provides a generous and competitive funding package to allow its students to focus on their coursework, research, teaching, and social service activities. 

Students receive support to cover their tuition, healthcare, and a stipend for five academic years. The funding package is provided as follows:

Dear Colleague Letter: Graduate Research Internships at National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NSF-NIBIB/BETA INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity

Dear Colleague:

Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the scientific and innovation skills of the Nation is a strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF and Center for Biomedical Engineering Technology Acceleration ( BETA ) housed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)- National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering ( NIBIB ) have entered into a partnership to support the training of graduate students to meet both the NSF's strategic workforce development objectives as well the NIBIB's mission to transform through engineering the understanding of disease and its prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment and NIBIB's support of the next generation of diverse, interdisciplinary researchers across the career continuum.

This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) describes this unique partnership with NIBIB/BETA and is aligned with and conforms with the NSF INTERN opportunity described in the Dear Colleague Letter: Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity . This DCL is referred to as the NSF - NIBIB/BETA INTERN DCL.

Recipients submitting an INTERN supplemental funding request are required to have a policy or code of conduct that addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, and sexual assault. For more information, read about NSF policies regarding harassment .

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

NSF will consider supplemental funding requests that enable a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI to request up to six months of additional support for a graduate student supported on an active NSF award with the following goals:

• To provide graduate students with the opportunity to augment their research assistantships or NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) fellowships with non-academic research internship activities and training opportunities that will complement their academic research training.
• To allow graduate students to engage in professional development experiences that will enhance their preparation for multiple career pathways after graduation.
• To encourage the participation of the full spectrum of diverse talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

ELIGIBILITY

Recipients with awards that include funding for graduate students, including institutional Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards, are eligible to submit a supplemental funding request. The PI for an active GRFP fellowship (not the GRFP fellow) should contact GRFP ( [email protected] ) regarding specific requirements before submitting a supplemental funding request on behalf of a GRFP fellow.

To be supported through an INTERN supplement responding to this DCL, graduate students (including graduate research fellows) being considered must have completed at least one academic year in their graduate programs (master's or doctoral), be in good academic standing and demonstrate satisfactory progress towards their research.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

PIs and co-PIs of NSF grants and the research advisor of the GRFP fellows are encouraged to contact Dr. Manu Platt ( [email protected] ) at NIBIB/BETA, to explore suitable opportunities for research traineeships at NIBIB/BETA in Bethesda, Maryland, for the graduate students who are supported on their NSF grants.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING REQUEST PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

Information about requesting supplemental support is contained in the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide ( PAPPG ), Chapter VI.E.5. In addition to the PAPPG requirements for supplemental support, the following materials must be included.

• A two-page summary that describes the internship
• A one-page personal statement from the graduate student describing career goals, accomplishments, and how the activity will better prepare the individual to enter the workforce.
• Research summary to include contribution(s) to research discipline
• Institution(s)
• Year of study (1st year, 2nd year, etc.)
• Completed coursework
• Employment and volunteer/outreach history
• Publications (accepted only)
• Other information relevant to the proposed internship
• A letter of collaboration from an authorized official at the host organization that describes the internship opportunity and mentoring the student will experience during the internship.
• An endorsement letter from the PI that confirms that the student meets the eligibility requirements specified in this DCL. The letter must describe how the proposed internship activity will contribute to the student's graduate education experience and how it may impact time to degree.
• A budget and a clear justification for all requested budget costs.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING AMOUNT

The total amount of funding requested must not exceed $55,000 per student for one six-month period. NSF plans to fund about 5-10 supplements per fiscal year, depending on the availability of funds.

PERIOD OF SUPPORT

The supplement funding will provide up to six months of support for an internship. Note: only one supplemental funding request may be submitted for a given student. A PI or co-PI may submit no more than one request per year of their award if there are multiple graduate students supported by the award, with the exception that GRFP will consider requests for internships for more than one GRFP Fellow from a single GRFP award.

Supplemental funding requests may be submitted at any time.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW

Requests for supplemental funding must be submitted via Research.gov. A PI or Co-PI with an NSF award should contact the program director who manages the award prior to submission. GRFP INTERN supplement requests are submitted by the GRFP PI, not by the GRFP fellow or the fellow's research advisor. Requests for supplemental funding submitted in response to this DCL will be reviewed internally by NSF program directors. All supplements are subject to (a) the availability of funds and (b) merit review of the supplemental funding request.

SPECIAL AWARD CONDITION

Intellectual Property Rights: Internships under this DCL are considered equivalent to traineeships. The National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering claims no rights to any inventions or writings that might result from its traineeship awards. However, trainees should be aware that NSF, another Federal agency, or some private party may acquire such rights through other support for particular research. Also, trainees should note their obligation to include an Acknowledgment and Disclaimer in any publication.

• No Thumbnail Available Item On K-theoretic polynomials and the chromatic symmetric function ( University of Waterloo , 2024-08-16 ) Pierson, Laura Show more This thesis explores various problems related to polynomials from combinatorial K-theory and/or to the chromatic symmetric function. We prove four main results: 1. Two alternating sum formulas involving K-theoretic polynomials, conjectured by Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021). 2. The fact that certain properties of a graph can be recovered from its Kromatic symmetric function. 3. A power sum expansion for the Kromatic symmetric function, which we show has integer coefficients. 4. Formulas for certain pieces of the chromatic symmetric homology for star graphs. The organization is as follows: In Chapter 1, we introduce background on symmetric functions and K-theory. The basic idea of K-theory is to deform cohomology rings by introducing an extra parameter β, often set to -1. In Chapter 2, we prove an alternating sum conjecture of Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021) concerning four different sets of K-theoretic polynomials: the Lascoux atoms, the kaons, the quasiLascoux polynomials, and the glide polynomials. Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021) proved that the coefficients in the kaon expansion of the Lascoux atoms and the coefficients in the glide expansion of the quasiLascoux polynomials are monomials in β. We prove their conjecture that for β = -1, the sum of the coefficients in each of these expansions is always either 0 or 1. In Chapter 3, we give background on the chromatic symmetric function (introduced by Stanley (1995)), and its K-analogue, the Kromatic symmetric function (introduced by Crew, Pechenik and Spirkl (2023)). A proper coloring of a graph is a way of assigning a color to each vertex such that adjacent vertices always receive different colors. The chromatic symmetric function is computed by assigning a variable to each color then summing the monomials for all proper colorings of G, where in each monomial, the exponent of each variable is the number of times that color is used. The Kromatic symmetric function is defined similarly except that the monomials correspond to proper set colorings, meaning each vertex is assigned a nonempty set of colors such that adjacent vertices have non-overlapping color sets. In Chapter 4, we study a question posed by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl (2023) about how much information about a graph can be recovered from its Kromatic symmetric function. It is known to be a stronger graph invariant than the chromatic symmetric function, and we conjecture that it is in fact a complete invariant that distinguishes all graphs. As evidence toward this conjecture, we prove that the number of copies in G of certain induced subgraphs can be recovered from its Kromatic symmetric function. In Chapter 5, we give a formula for the expansion of the Kromatic symmetric function using a K-analogue for the power sum basis of the ring of symmetric functions. We show that this expansion has all integer coefficients, as conjectured by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl (2023). In Chapter 6, we study the chromatic symmetric homology, which is a categorification of the chromatic symmetric function introduced by Sazdanovic and Yip (2018). We compute the multiplicity of certain Specht modules in in the case where G is a star graph, confirming and extending some conjectures of Chandler, Sazdanovic, Stella, and Yip (2023). Show more
• No Thumbnail Available Item Design and Density Control of a Swarm of Bimodal Particles ( University of Waterloo , 2024-08-16 ) Shaw, Justine Show more In this thesis, we present the design and control of a swarm of bimodal particles that switch their geometric shape between two modes. The particles are designed and 3D printed using layers of thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU) and polylactic acid(PLA) materials and are shaped like dodecahedrons. The switching control of the geometric shape is due to the particles reaction with an external stimuli of temperature, inducing switching between a open mode classified as mode 1 and an closed mode classified as mode 2. To enact the changes in geometric shape various temperature based hot and cold programming methods were conducted using water and artificial and natural heat sources. To quantify the aggregation of the swarm and control the switching motion we utilize the metric of the Motility-Induced Phase Separation (MIPS) index. To control the particles using the MIPS index we identify the motion model of the swarm as a Brownian particle or a noisy unicycle, having different parameters for both modes. In this research we experimentally validate the noise parameters that directly affect the motion of the particles thus affecting the MIPS index, and allowing us to control the swarm more directly. Simulations in MATLAB were conducted to characterize this switching behavior using the identified noise parameters and using the identified noise parameters the aggregation of the swarm in both modes were identified. Our simulations demonstrate that with identified noise parameters that affect the particles motion, desired swarm aggregation can be achieved using simple robots that are capable of changing their geometric shape. This research highlights how the simplicity of hardware design of a single agent can achieve aggregations for swarms which enable various environmental sensing tasks to be achieved. Show more

The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are partnering to present the Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education .

The Catalyst Awards support projects that impact the clinical learning environment and improve the experience of residents and fellows in one of the three priority areas supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation:

• Promoting diversity, equity, and belonging
• Increasing opportunities to learn in and from high-performing interprofessional teams
• Preparing future health professionals to navigate ethical dilemmas

Successful proposals will describe, implement, and evaluate innovative strategies to equip learners with the tools, skills, and strategies to flourish in the clinical learning environment. The first two completed cycles have already demonstrated the potential of these awards to make positive changes within their specific learning environments as well as to provide important models that can be utilized by other programs and institutions.

Masters and PhD stipends/fees for international students?

I know this information may be available online but I am a bit confused to would appreciate any clarification.

What are the fees a Masters by research and PhD student at Waterloo has to pay? Both for international students.

Also, what are the usual stipends?

For my masters (CO MMath) offer I was given a funding of 44k per year. How much of that will I have to pay for tuition is unclear to me.

Similarly, I just want to know for PhD (for future reference)
