The dissertation template is provided as a Google Doc. You can download it in MS Word format or make a copy to your Google Drive. You’re also welcome to convert it to whatever format works best for you, such as LaTeX or PDF.

What types of dissertations/theses can this template be used for?

The template follows the standard best-practice structure for formal academic research projects such as dissertations or theses, so it is suitable for the vast majority of degrees, particularly those within the sciences.

Some universities may have some additional requirements, but these are typically minor, with the core structure remaining the same. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Will this work for a research paper?

A research paper follows a similar format, but there are a few differences. You can find our research paper template here .

Is this template for an undergrad, Masters or PhD-level thesis?

This template can be used for a dissertation, thesis or research project at any level of study. It may be slight overkill for an undergraduate-level study, but it certainly won’t be missing anything.

How long should my dissertation/thesis be?

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

Guiding principles: the graduate school style manual.

The  Graduate School Style Manual  establishes a set of standards designed to ensure consistency, legibility, and professional appearance of theses and dissertations. These standards are not intended to comprehensively address all the minutiae of style and formatting. Students should refer to their academic department’s choice of style manuals for such specifics.  Note:  You must follow these guidelines to format your thesis/dissertation for the first format check. If it is apparent that you have not made a reasonable attempt to do so, your document will not be checked and your graduation may be delayed until a future semester.

• ETD Format Check Submission  You must have a format check done before you can submit your official copy.
• ETD Final Submission   Please note: Proof-reading changes cannot be made to the document once it has been accepted as final. Please make sure that you are happy with the document you submit and do not submit until you are sure no additional edits to the content will be needed. Please do NOT create a brand-new ProQuest account when it is time to submit the final version of your thesis or dissertation. Simply log into your original ProQuest account, visit the document upload area, and replace the PDF that is there with the revised and final PDF.

Doctoral Students Only

Survey of Earned Doctorates:   The Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED)  gathers data from all doctorate graduates each year. The responses become part of the Doctorate Records File, a virtually complete databank on doctorate recipients from 1920 to the present. These data serve policymakers at the federal, state, local and university levels.  Privacy : Information you provide is kept confidential and is safeguarded in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. The survey data are reported only in aggregate form or in a manner that does not identify information about any individual. Your information is vital to future program development and funding. Please register for the survey on the  SED Registration Website . You will receive a pin and password to complete the secure survey.

After You’ve Finished

Graduating students who wish to purchase copies of their work have a choice to either order bound copies from ProQuest or UGA Print and Copy Services. If you wish to order from ProQuest, you may place your order during the creation of your ProQuest account. If you would like copies of your thesis or dissertation from UGA,  Print and Copy Services at the Tate Student Center  will print and bind your thesis or dissertation in the traditional black hard cover with gold lettering, or the format of your choice. Please note that UGA Print and Copy Services will not have access to your document until the Graduate School has approved the  final  copy of your thesis or dissertation.

IOE alumni named winners of the 2024 BERA Master’s Dissertation and Doctoral Thesis awards

Dr Emily Macleod (PhD) and Kate Fox (Education and International Development MA) have won the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Doctoral and Master’s Thesis prizes respectively.

The awards are given in recognition of academic excellence and research rigour within the field of educational research. 

Emily Macleod won for her thesis, “The status and safety of teaching: A longitudinal study of why some young people in England become teachers, and why others do not.” She investigated young people’s motivations behind pursuing – or not pursuing – the profession amidst the context of national and international teacher shortages. 

She completed her PhD at IOE’s Department of Education, Practice and Society in 2023, and was a co-host on IOE’s podcast series Research for the Real World . She continues on as an honorary postdoctoral fellow. She also worked on the ASPIRES research project studying young people's science and career aspirations, before which she was a secondary school teacher. 

Kate Fox won for her MA dissertation entitled “Building bridges or barriers? A study of home, community, and school literacy practices in rural Tanzania.”

Her dissertation centres the experiences of parents from rural communities within the Tanzanian education system – and the diverse ways families and communities contribute to young children’s literacy learning.

Kate completed her Master’s degree at IOE in 2023. She is now a Research Officer with the IOE Research Development team, and a Research Assistant working on two multi-institutional projects: Climate-U and Equitable research cultures . Her career in education spans 20 years as a teacher, headteacher and teacher trainer in Tanzania and the UK.

Doctoral candidate killed in crash weeks before presenting dissertation, family says

AUSTIN, Texas. (Gray News) - A University of Texas at Austin doctoral candidate was killed in a car accident weeks before presenting his dissertation.

Ryan Wallace, a doctoral candidate at the School of Journalism and Media, was on his way to pick up his sister’s kids when he was killed in a crash in Bastrop County, KXAN reports.

Wallace was killed in the crash involving a Hays CISD school bus in Bastrop County. The accident also killed 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya.

Wallace’s family told KXAN that he was two weeks away from presenting his dissertation to receive his doctorate.

UT Journalism Professor Kathleen McElroy told KXAN that Wallace was very intelligent and insightful on many subjects.

“He was also a very giving person,” said McElroy. “I think that we all would have enjoyed having him as a faculty member. He would have been a great instructor and researcher in journalism.”

McElroy also started a GoFundMe to help Wallace’s family.

She shared that Wallace was a science writer and editor and he had worked with multiple publications,

Wallace’s committee will still meet on the day he was set to defend his dissertation to honor him.
