essay writing competition malaysia 2021

Malaysia celebrates its 64th Independence Day this year 2021. To you, what does gaining independence mean and how does it impact the future generation of the nation?

WHY THE YOUTH?

essay writing competition malaysia 2021

You are the leaders of tomorrow.

essay writing competition malaysia 2021

You will shape and decide the landscape of the country in the foreseeable future.

essay writing competition malaysia 2021

You will be the deciding factor - from running the government efficiently to imposing socio-cultural reforms for a united Malaysia.

HERE IS YOUR FIRST STEP

Put your thoughts in an essay.

Let your voice be heard today.

Youth are leaders of tomorrow, they say. This saying might have some significance but if tweaked to “youth are leaders of today” it will give a greater meaning and impact because all that matters now is today. Not tomorrow. Today affects tomorrow.

The prevalence of poor leadership is seen through various factors that cause a nation to implode. Different generations have come and passed. The call ‘to empower youth to be leaders of tomorrow’ has been nothing more than a resonance reverberating around classrooms and offices of lawmakers.

The time to harness different talents and abilities within a shared value system starts at schools. One way to tackle this conundrum is to encourage students into understanding the true context of Malaysia, its history and why acting now is essential for nation-building.

Students today will inevitably inherit this country when current leaders slowly move to take the backseats. Now is the time for students to stand up, be noticed and voice out their vision for the country with bright new ideas.

This essay writing competition is a step in the right direction for students to conspicuously articulate their ideas and ideals for how a nation should move forward.

If these appeal to you, we want to hear from you.

ABOUT THIS COMPETITION

The inaugural competition took place in 2019 and this is the second time it is being held. Essentially, this competition offers local and international high school students residing in Malaysia an opportunity to showcase their English language essay writing skills. Our aim is to encourage them to be interested in social and community issues and to express their thoughts through the art of essay writing using the English language.

In celebration of the 64th Merdeka Day as well as UCSI University's support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , we encourage students to observe, reflect and write on the role of youth in nation building.

Along with the development of a country’s socio-economical status, environmental sustainability is also gaining equal importance. More youths are becoming more educated in the effort to create a greener environment. This has gained more attention from environmental activists and the media as they too want to highlight these positive efforts in the hope that everyone will realise the negative impacts of industrialised activities on the earth and what they can do to remedy them. Following this, more youths start to realise the impact they can make in creating minimal to zero waste in a community in the ASEAN region. This collective effort from all parties should continue on. Youth will one day be blazing trails for greater ideas for tomorrow. This is their chance to stand up, be noticed, and voice their vision for the country. This essay-writing competition will give youths an opportunity to share their ideas on how to create a more sustainable environment.

Students at Sunway statue.

UPDATE: The submission deadline for this competition has been extended to 29 April 2022. Hurry and submit your masterpiece now!

Budding writers, something exciting is coming your way with prizes worth up to RM200,000 to be won!

Sunway Group is bringing back the nation’s longest-running English essay competition - the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition.

What is the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition?

It is an English essay competition fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education and organised by Sunway Group, the Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Sunway University , with support from Sunway PALS.

Renowned as one of the most popular local literary contests, more than 22,000 students have participated in the competition, which aims to equip secondary-level students with skills such as English proficiency, critical reasoning, creativity, as well as emotional intelligence that will prepare them for their future.

Sunway Group Deputy Executive Chairman and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation trustee Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim said, “This competition is part of the Group’s effort in nation-building to improve the quality of education across Malaysia by providing a fun and creative platform that allows them to develop a critical and innovative mindset, complete with the soft skills necessary for their future.

“We believe that we have a social responsibility to help advance the nation’s young minds for the betterment of our community,” he added.

This vision is encapsulated in the #SunwayforGood initiative that comprises three key pillars – education, healthcare and community enrichment . The competition is an extension of that initiative and reflects the commitment Sunway has made to uphold the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.

Who can join?

All Malaysian secondary school students studying the local syllabus are encouraged to join! Students will be divided into two categories:

  • Category A: Form 1 to 3
  • Category B: Form 4 and 5

Students will be required to submit their winning entries through the official portal,  www.sunway.com.my/essay , starting 28 March to 25 April 2022 (by 1.00 pm).

This year’s essays will revolve around the theme of ‘humility’.

The topics for each category are as below:

Category A - 200 to 350 words

Topic: “Malaysia is a country with religious diversity. Discuss how mutual respect can help people from different religious beliefs coexist harmoniously.”

Category B - 500 to 650 words

Topic: "Malaysia is a multiracial country. Make an argument for a more inclusive school that values the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of its students and outline the benefits this would bring."

Sunway Education Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Elizabeth Lee said, “We hope the topics we have chosen this year cultivate the art of critical thinking, a highly sought-after skill in graduates and prospective hires. Over and above this, we hope to instil a sense of pride for our country and unity among races in our students.

“The digital age in the wake of COVID-19 has somewhat confined physical communications and social integration opportunities to the backseat. We need to provide the space for discussions such as these to take place to ensure Malaysia continues to be the melting pot of Asia,” she added.

Gold Awards at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021

essay writing competition malaysia 2021

Christabel Lau and Ong Rui Yu from St Joseph’s International School (SJIS), Kuching are among 171 gold finalists out of 25,648 participants in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021. Lydia Ting also from SJIS achieved a Silver Award.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest international writing competition for schools, established in 1883. With thousands of young people taking part each year, it is an important way to recognise achievement, elevate youth voices and develop key skills through creative writing. For 2021 the Competition theme is Community in the Commonwealth. With the global spread of COVID-19, we’ve seen the lives of many Commonwealth citizens affected. However, through adversity, societies came together and stories of growth, community and hope continue to emerge.

Ong Rui Yu – Gold Award

It was part of our class assignment, so it was mandatory for us to write a composition for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. It was natural to submit our entries after all the effort we have put into it.

My Experience Writing this Piece

It was a challenge to gather my thoughts and feelings about an ongoing pandemic when all I wanted to do is escape from this world. It took one month of many idea changes, drafts, and edits before this work today. Initially I was working on a “wedding toast” to our frontliners until 1am one night, I was crouching under the table to gain a new perspective, when phrases materialised. In a frenzy, I wrote some of them down in my notebook and the next day I structured these ideas into the 7 silences. It did not go smooth sailing from then on as I struggled to put thought to word. I took walks in the park, listened to my curated playlist, and asked for lots of feedback.

The topic I chose was “Keeping Connected through the Covid-19” and my goal was to write about these silences that through my work, I can connect with my readers. I wanted to show people and document their experiences – both highs and lows. Major sources of inspiration were “Night” by Elie Wiesel and two pieces of music – “Moon Song” by Karen O and “I’m Forrest…Forrest Gump” by Alan Silvestri.

The news came like a spring breeze amidst a period of stressful studying. My feelings were a gentle sort of happiness with flowers blooming and the world embraced in a bird song. I felt grateful that God has granted me this achievement and I was pleased that my results have improved compared to last year’s Silver. I hope to hone my skills even more to achieve Winner next year if God wills it.

Advice for Aspiring Writers

The truth is that every one of you has amazing ideas and stories in your head, the challenge is putting it on paper. Therefore, I encourage everyone to read more (to expose yourself to different ways of expression), know what you’re trying to convey and be creative. Understand your audience – QCEC is searching for creative, profound works and it’s an avenue to spill your hearts out. Most importantly, don’t stop halfway.    This is an ongoing process – even now, I want to rewrite my submitted essay. Trust the process, believe in your goal, and persevere till the end. Hope this helps 😊 If you need help or anything, feel free to approach me.

Christabel Lau – Gold Award

First and foremost, I would like to thank the people who congratulated me. I would also like to thank my English teacher — Ms. Armstrong who introduced a variety of writing competitions last year and encouraged her students to participate in them. I probably wouldn’t have been aware of the QCEC without her. It was also because of her that I was able to improve my writing skills so drastically.

It took about a week for me to come up with different ideas on how I’d want the story to go. The story concept had been revised thrice before I was set on the current concept. It was my goal to make the drafting journey as fun as possible and it took about 2 months before I came up with a final draft that I was proud of.

When I received the email from QCEC, I was happy that what I wanted to portray in my essay came through. I am honoured that my essay had even been sent into the final panels. A big thank you to them for allowing us the opportunity to write and voice out our thoughts.    It dawned on me that competitions like QCEC allowed me to explore the depths of my creativity and expand my knowledge on what was happening around me. I strongly encourage students to challenge themselves in writing competitions as you really do learn and gain a lot of awareness on a variety of topics. e.g. climate change, life and so on.

Lydia Ting – Silver Award

How do you get to know about the competition?

I got to know about this competition through my English teacher, Ms Armstrong. I would like to thank her for introducing and encouraging us to join this competition.

How long did it take you to come out with your essay?

It took me around 5 days to finish the essay.

What was your feeling when the news reached you?

When the news reached me, I was very surprised and glad as it was really unexpected and I’m beyond grateful and privileged to receive this award.

Any advice you want to give/ encouragement for other students?

I would like to encourage other students to join because you never know what you can achieve if you don’t try. Anything is possible if you set your heart on it and work hard 🙂 Good luck to everyone who wishes to join this competition next year, you guys can do it! 😀

Will you continue to write?

Joining this competition for the first time has really opened my eyes and motivated me to become a better version of myself. Thus I will look forward to writing again in the future.

SUNWAY-OXBRIDGE Essay Competition 2021 Extended to 31 March 2021

2021-03-17-1615968275-01.jpg

Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, 17 March – Sunway Group’s Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2021 has extended its closing deadline from 23 March to 31 March 2021.

According to Sunway Group deputy executive chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim, “We are extending the essay writing competition submission period as to allow more students to participate, especially seeing that Form 5 students are sitting for SPM from 22 Feb-25 Mar 2021. Teachers who are invigilating also have the opportunity to focus on the competition once the exam is over.”

In its eighth year, the competition aims to promote and boost English proficiency among schools using the Malaysian syllabus nationwide. The competition offers prizes worth more than RM 200,000 in cash, bursaries, Sunway PALS points and a laptop.

Touted as the longest-running and most popular essay competition locally, the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is open to secondary school students, and divided into Category A (Form 1 to Form 3 students) and Category B (Form 4 and Form 5 students).

A new Category C has been introduced this year and is open to Malaysian secondary school teachers.

All Malaysian secondary school students and teachers can participate in the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition, except for those using international syllabus.

Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim added that Sunway has been working with the Ministry of Education and the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Malaysia to bring this essay competition across schools to equip secondary school students with critical skills such as proficiency in the English language, critical reasoning, creativity and emotional intelligence that will prepare them for the future.

“This programme is part of Sunway’s corporate responsibility encapsulated in the #SunwayforGood initiative that comprises three key pillars – education, healthcare and community enrichment,” he said.

“Under the education pillar, we strive towards advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. At Sunway, we are deeply committed to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals towards enriching the lives of communities that we serve.”

Established in 2014, the competition has drawn a combined 19,042 participants to-date. Just like previous years, the competition will accept original and unpublished English-language stories based on this year’s theme “Health and well-being”.

For Category A, submissions – with a minimum word count of 200 and a maximum of 350 words – will centre on the question: “The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the challenges of online learning throughout Malaysia. What could make this better?”

For Category B (minimum word count: 500; maximum 650 words): “The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the challenges of online learning throughout Malaysia. How could this be alleviated in the future?”

Meanwhile, Category C (minimum word count: 1,000; maximum 1,500 words) relates to the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the challenges of online education throughout Malaysia. How could this be alleviated in the future?”

Each participant is allowed to submit one essay only.

The judging panel comprises Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia and English teachers from Ministry of Education.

Winning entrants must show originality and flair, a link to academic standards and competent use of English as a written language, including proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.

50 finalists in the Klang Valley and 10 to 20 finalists at each venue in other parts of the country will then be selected for the on-site final.

These finalists from Categories A and B will be notified via email to undergo a sit-down essay competition on May 29 at nominated location(s) nationwide by Sunway.

They will bear their own accommodation and travel costs to the nominated location(s).

For Category C, there is no on-site final.

“The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is a great opportunity for students to refine their command of the English language and develop values as well as other soft skills necessary for their own future prospects, so that they can thrive career-wise and ultimately succeed in life,” said Sunway Education Group chief executive officer Professor Elizabeth Lee.

“The soft skills include critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, complex problem solving, as well as judgement and decision-making,” Lee added.

Thirteen winners each from Categories A and B will be chosen and notified via email to attend the prize-giving ceremony on July 10 at Sunway University in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur.

The first prize consists of RM5,000 in cash, a full Sunway bursary, 10,000 Sunway Pals Points, an award certificate and a trophy.

The second prize – RM3,000 in cash, a Sunway bursary worth RM15,000, 10,000 Sunway Pals Points, an award certificate and a trophy.
