How to prepare and deliver pharmacy presentations
Affiliation.
- 1 Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, PA 19104.
- PMID: 1716856
Advice to pharmacists on the preparation and delivery of oral presentations is given. First, a topic must be selected that is appropriate for the speaker, the audience, and the situation or occasion. The audience's educational level, prior knowledge of the topic, and beliefs or attitudes toward the topic must be considered, as well as the time allotted. A title should be chosen to succinctly describe the presentation and to arouse interest. Next, the information should be organized into an outline. Preparing learning objectives helps to identify concepts that the speaker should emphasize; the objectives can also be used to assess the audience's knowledge after the presentation. Visual aids should be prepared in draft form before the text is written, so that the oral presentation will expand upon material presented through the visual aids. Guidelines are given for preparing and presenting overhead transparencies and slides. Although no more than 25% of the speaker's allotted time should be spent on the introduction and conclusion, the introduction is crucial because it must tell the audience the purpose and the topics to be covered, as well as stimulate the listeners' interest. The conclusion should summarize and clarify the information and answer any questions posed in the introduction. Delivery involves effective use of eye contact and body language. The presentation should be spoken in a voice that is intelligible and uses appropriate stress, variation, quality, and pace. Tips for polishing and rehearsing the presentation are given. Pharmacists can enhance communication with an audience by paying close attention to topic selection, organization, visual aids, preparation of the text, and methods for effective delivery.

5 Hot Topics for Community Pharmacists in 2023
As a new year approaches, pharmacists have so much to look back on and be grateful for, and a world of opportunity in front of them. Here are a few things to be ready for right away in 2023.
It’s that time of the year again. Time for independent pharmacists to reflect on our amazing accomplishments and think about what we’ve learned so we can make what’s ahead even better.
You don’t need a crystal ball to see the opportunities and challenges headed our way. Many of the hot topics on the horizon have been brewing for a while. Pharmacy technology, tech-savvy consumers, data security—it’s all picking up speed, and pharmacists need a plan. To get the process started, let’s take a look at 5 topics for 2023 that should be on every pharmacist’s mind.
1. Find a partner, not just a vendor
Pharmacists play an important role in improving patient health, but to reach our full potential, we need to expand beyond medication dispensing. Chronic disease management, point-of-care testing, and patient education all are opportunities, but a lot to take on.
A true business partner can help a pharmacy be the dependable health resource their community deserves. Gone are the days of hiring a vendor with little knowledge of your business or vested interest in the people you serve. More than ever, it’s all about trust.
2. Artificial intelligence (AI) is key to pharmacy profitability
High-deductible health plans continue to grow in popularity. This is forcing customers to ramp up their search for new ways to save on their medications.
Pharmacists need a pricing solution that keeps customers happy and builds the bottom line. That’s where AI comes in. It provides data-driven insights that take that guesswork out of drug pricing and enhances the pharmacy experience. The buzz around AI in the pharmacy is growing —look for it to get even louder in 2023.
3. Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) will be under a bigger microscope
It’s a nationwide problem: Pharmacies are going out of business due to the predatory business practices of traditional PBMs . Up until now, PBMs have operated completely in the dark.
With no accountability or transparency, they obscure the true cost of drugs, and the consumer often pays higher prices. But FTC investigations are set to shine a brighter light on these nefarious practices.
By pushing for change, the FTC can help pharmacists run a profitable business, and help consumers make better choices for their health. Look for FTC hearings and their impacts in the coming year.
4. Consumers want more technology and transparency Today’s tech-savvy consumers see the benefits of a simpler, more transparent medication shopping experience. Prescryptive’s recent Independent Pharmacy Trends study showed 72% of consumers would be likely to use their mobile phone to compare drug prices, and 85% believe knowing the price in advance would improve their pharmacy experience.
By providing mobile-friendly solutions and transparent pricing options, you’ll drive more customers to your counter. The coming year is the time to invest in new technology.
5. Data security takes a front row seat
Nearly 50 million people in the United States had their sensitive health data breached in 2021. Hackers are everywhere, and community pharmacies are seen as relatively soft targets.
Advanced security protections have never been more important. Find a technology partner who can protect your patients’ data while helping your business grow in 2023.
But the real bottom line will never change
No matter what comes our way in 2023, one thing that will always stay the same: Our focus on the patient. Taking care of people is at the center of everything we do. With the right technology, trusted partnerships, strategic thinking, and a ton of hard work, independent pharmacists will thrive and help build healthier communities.

Opening Doors for Nashville’s Future Pharmacists
April 23, 2024 | by Ryleigh Green
- Pharmacy Workshops
This year, Belmont University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS) held a number of pharmacy workshops for high school students from schools across the Metro Nashville area. These students learned about different aspects of a career in pharmacy through a variety of activities and got to tour Belmont's facilities.
The workshops began as a labor of love from Dr. Austin Mondloch, a clinical pharmacist fellow from 2021-2023. “He thought bringing high schoolers in to learn about pharmacies would be a great time,” Fricker said. “It was a wonderful idea.”
They found the events were something they wanted to continue as a way to see if students showed increased interest in studying pharmacy after learning about it first-hand.
The workshops have several parts beginning with students attending a pharmacy profession presentation with Fricker. Next, they are taken to a non-sterile compounding activity where they get to make hand sanitizer and chapstick. They are then given a tour of Belmont’s on-campus pharmacy before returning to the Drug Information Center for a drug information scavenger hunt. Before leaving for the day, they play a final Clue -style game to learn about toxicology.
Because pharmacy is not a common career path to explore in high school, many students are not aware of all facets of the profession. Fricker found that, after being shown some practical examples of what the field holds, interests are piqued, and students become more engaged in the possibility of following that path.
“What I want to do is inspire students,” said Fricker. “One really inspired student makes it all worthwhile.”
Belmont is opening doors to careers that students may not have known about otherwise, offering them the opportunity to explore pharmacy in a new and engaging way. Under the guidance of Fricker, Cook and the CPHS faculty, Nashville’s high schoolers are unlocking passions and learning how to make their new dreams into reality.
