Or if you offer professional services, like marketing support or a financial advisor, you might want to grow your client base by 50%. In order to grow this number consistently, you must also keep your existing clients on board. Therefore, an objective might be to improve customer relations to retain clients for longer. Then you can begin to research strategies to support your overall business goals.

By checking in regularly on your business plan, you will be able to track your progress toward important growth milestones and change tactics as you learn more about your customers. By having your plan in writing, you are setting yourself up to grow at a faster rate than businesses that don’t create a business plan .

Entrepreneurs who are starting a new business often wonder, "Do I really need a business plan? Is writing a business plan really the best use of my time?" The answer to these questions is almost always, "Yes." A business plan is an integral part of starting a new business.

In reality, business plans can take a long time to write, require that you have a tremendous amount of data at your fingertips, depend in part on projections and often are responsible for creating a long list of research you still need to conduct and other work you need to complete.

Plus, not everyone is sold on the usefulness of a business plan. Consider the study of 116 new businesses conducted by Babson College. The study found that the presence of a formal business plan before starting a small business made no difference in the ultimate success of the business, assuming it was one that was not seeking outside funding.

Some also argue that taking the time required to create a business plan can stifle the startup process and cost precious opportunities for a small business.

On the other hand,  one study  found that entrepreneurs who write formal plans are 16% more likely to achieve viability than the otherwise identical non-planning entrepreneurs. Other  studies  have shown that while completing a business plan is not a guarantee of success, it does indicate that the type of entrepreneur who completes a business plan is also more likely to run a successful business.

1. A Business Plan Is Simply a Must-Have for Some Businesses

If you plan to approach a financial institution for a loan, apply for a small business grant , pitch your business idea to investors, or enlist the support of a business partner, a business plan is required.

Potential investors and supporters want to see the true potential of your business idea clearly laid out in hard facts and numbers. A business plan is the best, and generally, the only acceptable way to provide this information.

One cognitive bias that may be more difficult to catch in the act is confirmation bias . When seeking to validate a particular viewpoint, it's the tendency to only pay attention to information that supports that viewpoint.

If you’re crafting a strategic plan for your organization and know which strategy you prefer, enlist others with differing views and opinions to help look for information that either proves or disproves the idea.

Combating biases in strategic decision-making requires effort and dedication from your entire team, and it can make your organization’s strategy that much stronger.

Having a strategic plan in place can enable you to track progress toward goals. When each department and team understands your company’s larger strategy, their progress can directly impact its success, creating a top-down approach to tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) .

10 Simple Tips to Write a Successful Business Plan

You may need several versions of your business plan. For example, you may need one for bankers or venture capitalists, one for individual investors, and one for companies that may want to do a joint venture with you rather than fund you.

3. Have proof to back up every claim you make.

If you expect to be the leader in your field in six months, you have to say why you think that is. If you say your product will take the market by storm, you have to support this statement with facts. If you say your management team is fully qualified to make the business a success, be sure staff resumes demonstrate their experience.

4. Be conservative in all financial estimates and projections.

If you feel certain you'll capture 50 percent of the market in the first year, you can say why you think so and hint at what those numbers may be. But make your financial projections more conservative. For example, a 10 percent market share is much more credible.

5. Be realistic with time and resources available.

If you're working with a big company before you buy a business, you may think things will happen faster than they will once you have to buy the supplies, write the checks, and answer the phones yourself. Being overly optimistic with time and resources is a common error entrepreneurs make. Being realistic is important because it lends credibility to your presentation. Always assume things will take 20 percent longer than you anticipated. Therefore, twenty weeks is now twenty-four weeks.

6. Be logical.

Think like a banker and write what they would want to see.

7. Have a strong management team.

Make sure it has good credentials and expertise. Your team members don't have to have worked in the field. However, you need to draw parallels between what they've done and the skills needed to make your venture succeed. Don't have all the skills you need? 8. Document why your idea will work.

Have others done something similar that was successful? Have you made a prototype? Include all the variables that can have an impact on the result or outcome of your idea. Show why some of the variables don't apply to your situation or explain how you intend to overcome them or make them better.

9. Describe your facilities and location for performing the work.

That includes equipment you use to create your products and/or services. If you'll need to expand, discuss when, where, and why.

10. Discuss payout options for the investors.

Some investors want a hands-on role. Some want to put associates on your board of directors. Some don't want to be involved in day-to-day activities at all. All investors want to know when they can get their money back and at what rate of return. Most want out within three to five years. Provide a brief description of options for investors, or at least mention that you're ready to discuss options with any serious prospect.

  • What resources you would need to allocate to help your staff meet this objective

Measurable goals use metrics such as dates and numerical values to track your progress. This approach not only encourages you to focus on the end goal, but also helps you evaluate how your efforts are helping you accomplish your objectives, which can help you stay motivated. In the above example, your measurable goal might be to increase your sales by $5,000. You might decide this should happen in a month, and then ask each sales team member to follow five extra leads per week in hopes of meeting this objective.

For a goal to be achievable, it must be realistic. For example, a goal to make $1 million in one day probably isn’t attainable for most of us, and setting such a goal would be setting yourself up to fail. Even though your goals should require you to expend extra effort, they should be reachable.

Teams can benefit from collaboration-based goals. Strengthen groups by creating interconnected objectives. Offer professional communication channels like Slack to facilitate coordination and celebrate achievements.

A relevant goal matters to your business; it should make sense and meet your company’s needs. Referring to the example above, would increasing your revenue make a difference to your business? Of course! However, not every business goal needs to be about revenue.

“If one of your big values is to serve others to the best of your abilities, then merely setting a revenue-based goal isn’t going to be enough to motivate you,” Heather Moulder, leadership and business coach at Course Correction Coaching, told business.com.

A time-bound goal has a deadline for the work you intend to do. When there isn’t any time limit, measuring your progress is hard. Deadlines can push you to action and help you work toward your goals efficiently.

What are examples of business goals?

Understanding a good goal can help you model your own goals for your small business. 

Let’s say you want to increase revenue by introducing a new service or product. Moulder said this goal is purposeful and beneficial to your company because it would help you better serve your clients and improve customer satisfaction. It would also mean taking on more responsibility for creating your new product or service, so you would need to prepare for the time and resources that entails.

Business goals can also be about your employees. If your objective is, for example, to improve or grow your team members’ skill sets, you can do so through actionable items, like creating a committee to hire a professional instructor for employee training courses . Then, the objective would be to have this instructor train your staffers for the next six months. When they complete the course, you can measure their skills by assigning tasks based on their learning. 

How do you write a business goal?

It’s one thing to have general goals in mind, but you need to put pen to paper. Writing your goals down is very effective.  “The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real and tangible,” said Angela Civitella, a certified business coach and founder of Intinde. “You have no excuse for forgetting about it.”

Here are two tips to help you write effective business goals.

1. Write in an active style.

The language you use when writing your goals impacts how you perceive them and whether you get them done.

“As you write, use the word ‘will’ instead of ‘would like to’ or ‘might,’” Civitella said. “For example, ‘I will reduce my operating expenses by 10 percent this year,’ not ‘I would like to reduce my operating expenses by 10 percent this year.’ The first goal statement has power, and you can ‘see’ yourself reducing expenses. The second lacks passion and gives you an excuse if you get sidetracked.”

Writing down your goals creates self-accountability. The goal is no longer simply in your mind but tangible. Whether you look at your goal in writing daily or revisit it months later, this extra step can signal intent and motivate you to achieve your objectives.

2. Narrow down what’s important.

Make sure your goals are important to you and your company. Ask yourself, “Does this goal motivate me?”

“If you have little interest in the outcome, or they are irrelevant given the larger picture, then the chances of you putting in the work to make them happen are slim,” Civitella said. “Motivation is key to achieving goals.”

There is such a thing as too many goals. Ensure you write down only extremely valuable objectives. A long to-do list with only two items crossed off can cause feelings of disappointment and frustration, which can add to demotivation and be incredibly destructive, Civitella said.

“Ask yourself, ‘If I were to share my goal with others, what would I tell them to convince them it was a worthwhile goal?’” she said. “You can use this motivating value statement to help you if you start to doubt yourself or lose confidence in your ability to actually make the goal happen.”

What are the different types of business goals?

Four types of goals are beneficial in the business world. Read on to learn more about each of them.

Activity-based goals

Activity-based goals require you to perform specific tasks or activities. For example, you might set a goal to make 20 weekly client phone calls.

Process-based goals

Process-based goals require you to focus on internal processes, strategies and behaviors. “Some examples would be resetting business policies for better efficiency or developing a new training program for staff to help their communication with customers,” Moulder said. 

Outcome-based goals

Outcome-based goals focus on the results of your efforts. You may have less control over these results if they’re based on consumer or client behavior. 

“An example of this would be to get 10 referrals from existing customers,” said James Pollard, owner of The Advisor Coach. “You can’t directly control whether or not they give you any referrals, but you can influence the process by asking.”

Some goals are a hybrid of process and outcome goals, explained Moulder. For instance, a service-based business might set a goal to implement a new staff training program to improve customer service. The process portion of the goal is implementing the training program. The outcome is improving customer service, which you could gauge by a reduction in service cancellations or an increase in repeat customers . 

Personal goals

Personal goals are those that business owners set for themselves. These may be related to maintaining or improving your health, work-life balance , or professional development. Knowing what you want for yourself is as essential as understanding what you want for your business because your personal goals affect how you run your company. 

Celebrate reaching both your short-term and long-term goals. Choose rewards that give you time away from your business to unwind, like an outing with friends or a family vacation.

Why is setting goals important in business?

We set small goals in our everyday lives, such as making it home in time for dinner or eating salad for lunch. Goals are vital because they give you and your business direction. With them, you may perform at your best.

Without goals, however, it’s hard to measure your business’s success, which makes it challenging to recognize what aspects of your company are doing well and where growth is needed. Objectives and a mission statement also keep you and your team aligned. When everyone knows the company’s purpose and how their roles contribute to the mission, it improves morale and increases productivity.

Students and school employees across America will be impacted in the fall by new changes to a rule that affects all federally-funded schools.

Practically, it's a sweeping update to how schools will have to handle sex discrimination and abuse cases. Politically, it's a part of a power struggle between the Trump and Biden administrations.

What's new? The Biden administration released a new set of rules this week overhauling the Trump administration's Title IX rules – which gave more rights to alleged perpetrators of sexual assault and harassment. The new rules also stipulate further protections for LGBTQ+ students as well as parenting and pregnant students.

What is Title IX? Title IX is a civil rights law that bans sex discrimination against students, employees and others at public schools, colleges and universities that receive federal funding.

What were some of the old rules? For cases of sexual assault, they stipulated that schools only had to investigate claims that met a certain threshold of sex discrimination and were made through a formal reporting process. It also raised the bar of proof for sexual misconduct on college campuses. They prohibited investigations of cases that occurred off campus.

Why does the change matter? Critics argued the Trump-era rules prevented people accused of sexual harassment, assault or discrimination from facing repercussions. Supporters contended the rules rightly strengthened due-process protections for accused students or faculty members.

Biden's new Title IX rules will affect people on the nation's school campuses starting in August.

What happened this week?

The Biden administration's new set of guidance overhauls Trump-era rules that in part narrowed which and how schools could investigate sex discrimination cases. President Joe Biden in his 2020 presidential campaign vowed to overturn the changes made under Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

The new rules expand the definition of sexual assault and harassment. That means schools could investigate more cases of discrimination, abuse or harassment filed by people on school campuses under the scope of the law.

College student survivors will no longer be required to attend live hearings or go through cross examinations. And people will be given the right to "prompt and equitable grievance procedures," the rule reads.

LGBTQ+ students will be guaranteed protection under the law if they are discriminated against for their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Pregnant and parenting students who might receive unwanted sexual attention, shame or punishment at schools will also be granted more protections from sex discrimination in the admissions process and on campus.

“These final regulations build on the legacy of Title IX by clarifying that all our nation’s students can access schools that are safe, welcoming, and respect their rights," said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

Who is impacted by the changes to Title IX?

The rule changes have a wide range of effects on students, among the most notable examples:

  • Sexual assault survivors : The new rules will have sweeping effects on survivors of sexual misconduct and those accused of crimes. Among the changes: The definition of sexual assault will be expanded in K-12 schools and colleges.
  • LGBTQ+ students : Biden's Title IX update stipulates protections from sex discrimination based gender identity for the first time.
  • Pregnant and parenting students : The new regulations extend the definition of "sex-based harassment" to include pregnant people on campuses.

Ruling on transgender student participation in sports remains unsettled

The Biden administration did not rule on whether transgender and nonbinary students can participate on the sports teams that align with their gender.

The administration released a proposed rule in April 2023 that said schools and colleges largely could not ban nonbinary and transgender students from sports teams in the new Title IX rules.

I've known Rishi Sunak slightly for almost a decade, having first met him after he penned a thoughtful, comprehensive, well-received report on Britain's minority communities, which I'd say is still the best of its kind.

Sitting down to interview him in a state-of-the-art defence facility this week, I could still see the same energetic, likeable problem solver that I met back then, even if he's now surrounded by the prime ministerial cavalcade of aides, security and media.

That Peloton and fasting regime are clearly doing their job. He's keen to show his detailed grasp of the situation, whether that's welfare reform, defence or migration. It's easy to see why he shone in Silicon Valley and thrived in the Treasury.

However, in the political world he chose, there's a downside to being highly intelligent, disciplined, and super-focused on delivery, as they might say in California.

He betrays frustration with what he - not wholly unjustifiably - sees as a media obsession with polls and presentation.

Unfortunately, as Enoch Powell once pointed out, a politician who complains about journalists is like a sailor who doesn't much fancy being at sea.

He rightly points out that it's his job to make hard choices - for example, funding the defence budget even if it's at the expense of schools and hospitals.

But a political leader should also know that what follows is an even harder job: to cajole the electorate into supporting that choice - and the voters aren't always governed by the logic of the computer.

Lorna Slater, co-leader of the Scottish Greens, has said her party will not be changing its mind about supporting the upcoming motion of no confidence in First Minister Humza Yousaf.

Ms Slater said they would vote in favour of the motion on BBC Scotland's Sunday Show,

"I cannot imagine anything at this point that could change that position.

"This was a spectacular breach of trust."

She was asked if policy offers from Mr Yousaf ahead of the vote could persuade them to abstain.

“[The Bute House Agreement] was based on mutual trust and respect. I do have trust and respect for many of my SNP colleagues," she said.

"But Humza Yousaf himself has broken that and he needs to face the consequences."

Policing minister Chris Philp said he was posing a "rhetorical question" after he appeared to ask whether Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were different countries.

The MP for Croydon South said he was struggling to hear when he was asked about the government's new law on deporting some asylum seekers to Rwanda by a Question Time audience member.

He told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg: "I was struggling a little bit to hear the question.

"When I put that point to him I was asking that as a clearly rhetorical question rather than a substantive question, as I think any fair-minded listener would conclude."

What did he say on Question Time?

The audience member, from Congo, pointed out there has been a long history of violent conflict with neighbouring country Rwanda.

He asked Mr Philp: "Had my family members come from Goma [a city on the country's border] on a crossing right now, would they then be sent back to the country they are supposedly warring – Rwanda? Does that make any sense to you?"

Mr Philp replied: "No, I think there's an exclusion on people from Rwanda being sent to Rwanda."

After the audience member objected that his parents were not from Rwanda, the Conservative MP appeared to ask: "Well, I mean, Rwanda is a different country to Congo, isn't it?

"It's a different country?" he said, followed by laughter from some audience members.

Rishi Sunak was quizzed over the local and general elections, the Rwanda Scheme and defence spending today on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

A little earlier this morning, Rishi Sunak told Sky News that the movement of migrants from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland showed his Rwanda scheme was working as a deterrent.

But the Irish government is to consider legislative proposals next week on returning asylum seekers back to the UK who have travelled across the land border.

Justice minister Helen McEntee will also meet Home Secretary James Cleverly next week, after saying the number of migrants crossing the border was now "higher than 80%".

"I'll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK," she told RTE.

Ms McEntee added Brexit was responsible for the UK seeing an increase in people seeking asylum.

A spokesman for Irish premier Simon Harris said he is "very clear about the importance of protecting the integrity" of Ireland's migration system.

"Ireland has a rules-based system that must always be applied firmly and fairly.

"In that context, the Taoiseach has asked the minister for justice to bring proposals to Cabinet next week to amend existing law regarding the designation of safe 'third countries' and allowing the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK."

Alex Salmond asked Alastair Campbell to negotiate on behalf of Scotland with the UK government in the event it voted for independence in 2014, Mr Campbell tells Sky News.

The proposal was made when the pair were in Scotland ahead of the referendum, making tributes to Tony Benn, the former Number 10 communications director says.

"If Scotland had become independent, then that would have been a massive, massive thing for the country, so I would have been very happy to do that.

"I would want people who weren't necessarily pro-indpendence to be part of that team."

As Humza Yousaf fights to maintain leadership of Scotland, the Alba Party's Alex Salmond joins Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

Meanwhile, Ash Regan, the Alba Party's sole MP and potentially the deciding vote in a no-confidence motion in Mr Yousaf, is expected to meet with the first minister.

Ms Regan will "make a set of reasonable proposals to help him out of a very tight corner", says Mr Salmond.

"Scotland is lucky that somebody like Ash Regan is in that position."

Independence forces should be "cooperating together to try and get independence back as a priority in Scottish society".

Asked if an agreement can be reached with the SNP, Mr Salmond says Mr Yousaf is "in a very difficult position" but he will be in a "listening mode".

"He wouldn't have sacked the Greens from his administration unless he wanted a significant change in direction," says Mr Salmond.

"One possible outcome of this political crisis is there might be a Scottish election."

Earlier this week, Labour pledged to nationalise the railway system.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting says the plan is a "reflection of the failure of privatised rail and the absence of competition".

If you bring the franchises back into public ownership as they come up, the profits can be reinvested into better services and fairs, argues Mr Streeting.

"There is already enormous public ownership of our railways, but they are owned by French, German, Dutch and Italian taxpayers, and our profits go into their countries."

"It's time that we had public ownership of our railways so we can reinvest."

Trevor Phillips continues to put questions to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting.

He is about Keir Starmer's pledge to maintain the triple lock, with Phillips raising statistics showing median wealth for those in their early 60s was nearly nine times higher than those in their early 30s.

"I don't buy into that intergenerational conflict argument. We need to give pensioners the reassurance to know that as they have planned for retirement... that Labour will protect the triple lock."

Wes Streeting is asked about the possibility of a July election, which the prime minister has refused to rule out.

The shadow health secretary says: "He should get on with it. We are not just ready, we are, as with the rest of the country, fed up of waiting."

People are "crying out for an opportunity to deliver their verdict on this government and vote for change", he says.

"That's why the prime minister bottled an election earlier this year, that's why he's bottled it now, and that's why he will have to be taken out of Downing Street by his fingernails."

A buy-sell agreement establishes a clear transition of ownership if a partner dies, retires or becomes disabled. This type of contract provides a framework for co-owners or key employees to buy out a deceased owner’s stake in the business.

Business partners may take out life insurance policies on each other as part of a buy-sell agreement so they have the funds to make the business purchase.

Group life insurance

Both large and small businesses can offer group life insurance as a benefit to employees. These policies can be cost-effective for business owners and employees since premiums paid by employers are tax-deductible as business expenses in some cases, Salka says.

Group plans can make coverage accessible to a wide range of people, regardless of pre-existing medical conditions. Plus, offering additional benefits like group life insurance can help you attract and retain top talent.

Getting life insurance as a small-business owner

Nearly 3 in 4 U.S. adults (72%) overestimate the cost of life insurance, LIMRA’s 2024 Insurance Barometer Study found. In reality, a healthy 40-year-old man could pay less than $350 a year for an individual 20-year term policy with a $500,000 death benefit, according to Quotacy, a life insurance brokerage.

Follow these steps to insure yourself or your business.

Decide how much coverage you need. Consider both your personal and business expenses to calculate how much your family or business would need to survive long-term without you. 

Choose which type of life insurance you need. The size of your business and how you want ownership handled after you die can help you choose among an individual policy for yourself, a buy-sell agreement, key person insurance or a combination of multiple policies.  

Shop around and get quotes. Compare life insurance quotes from three to five companies online or over the phone. Working with an agent or broker can help you find coverage and negotiate the best terms for your needs.  

No matter how much life insurance coverage or what type you choose, understanding your business’s coverage needs is a key first step for a small-business continuity plan, Salka says. Preparing your family, heirs and business ahead of time can help everyone feel at ease and confident with your long-term plans.

It’s the main station for Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus. And it’s day seven of the Gaza solidarity encampment, where a hundred students were arrested last Thursday.

So on one side of Broadway, you see camera crews. You see NYPD officers all lined up. There’s barricades, steel barricades, caution tape. This is normally a completely open campus. And I’m able to — all members of the public, you’re able to walk through.

This is “The Daily.” Today, the story of how Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators, and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech. I spoke with my colleague, Nick Fandos.

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

It’s Thursday, April 25.

Nick, if we rewind the clock a few months, we end up at a moment where students at several of the country’s best known universities are protesting Israel’s response to the October 7 attacks, its approach to a war in Gaza. At times, those protests are happening peacefully, at times with rhetoric that is inflammatory. And the result is that the leaders of those universities land before Congress. But the president of Columbia University, which is the subject we’re going to be talking about today, is not one of the leaders who shows up for that testimony.

That’s right. So the House Education Committee has been watching all these protests on campus. And the Republican Chairwoman decides, I’m going to open an investigation, look at how these administrations are handling it, because it doesn’t look good from where I sit. And the House last winter invites the leaders of several of these elite schools, Harvard, Penn, MIT, and Columbia, to come and testify in Washington on Capitol Hill before Congress.

Now, the President of Columbia has what turns out to be a very well-timed, pre-planned trip to go overseas and speak at an international climate conference. So Minouche Shafik isn’t going to be there. So instead, the presidents of Harvard, and Penn, and MIT show up. And it turned out to be a disaster for these universities.

They were asked very pointed questions about the kind of speech taking place on their campuses, and they gave really convoluted academic answers back that just baffled the committee. But there was one question that really embodied the kind of disconnect between the Committee — And it wasn’t just Republicans, Republicans and Democrats on the Committee — and these college presidents. And that’s when they were asked a hypothetical.

Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Penn’s rules or code of conduct? Yes or no?

If the speech turns into conduct, it can be harassment.

And two of the presidents, Claudine Gay of Harvard and Elizabeth Magill of the University of Pennsylvania, they’re unwilling to say in this really kind of intense back and forth that this speech would constitute a violation of their rules.

It can be, depending on the context.

What’s the context?

Targeted at an individual. Is it pervasive?

It’s targeted at Jewish students, Jewish individuals. Do you understand your testimony is dehumanizing them?

And it sets off a firestorm.

It does not depend on the context. The answer is yes. And this is why you should resign. These are unacceptable answers across the board.

Members of Congress start calling for their resignations. Alumni are really, really ticked off. Trustees of the University start to wonder, I don’t know that these leaders really have got this under control. And eventually, both of them lose their jobs in a really high profile way.

Right. And as you’ve hinted at, for somewhat peculiar scheduling reasons, Columbia’s President escapes this disaster of a hearing in what has to be regarded as the best timing in the history of the American Academy.

Yeah, exactly. And Columbia is watching all this play out. And I think their first response was relief that she was not in that chair, but also a recognition that, sooner or later, their turn was going to come back around and they were going to have to sit before Congress.

Why were they so certain that they would probably end up before Congress and that this wasn’t a case of completely dodging a bullet?

Well, they remain under investigation by the committee. But also, as the winter wears on, all the same intense protests just continue unabated. So in many ways, Columbia’s like these other campuses. But in some ways, it’s even more intense. This is a university that has both one of the largest Jewish student populations of any of its peers. But it also has a large Arab and Muslim student population, a big Middle Eastern studies program. It has a dual degree program in Tel Aviv.

And it’s a university on top of all that that has a real history of activism dating back to the 1960s. So when students are recruited or choose to come to Columbia, they’re actively opting into a campus that prides itself on being an activist community. It’s in the middle of New York City. It’s a global place. They consider the city and the world, really, like a classroom to Columbia.

In other words, if any campus was going to be a hotbed of protest and debate over this conflict, it was going to be Columbia University.

Exactly. And when this spring rolls around, the stars finally align. And the same congressional committee issues another invitation to Minouche Shafik, Columbia’s President, to come and testify. And this time, she has no excuse to say no.

But presumably, she is well aware of exactly what testifying before this committee entails and is highly prepared.

Columbia knew this moment was coming. They spent months preparing for this hearing. They brought in outside consultants, crisis communicators, experts on anti-Semitism. The weekend before the hearing, she actually travels down to Washington to hole up in a war room, where she starts preparing her testimony with mock questioners and testy exchanges to prep her for this. And she’s very clear on what she wants to try to do.

Where her counterparts had gone before the committee a few months before and looked aloof, she wanted to project humility and competence, to say, I know that there’s an issue on my campus right now with some of these protests veering off into anti-Semitic incidents. But I’m getting that under control. I’m taking steps in good faith to make sure that we restore order to this campus, while allowing people to express themselves freely as well.

So then the day of her actual testimony arrives. And just walk us through how it goes.

The Committee on Education and Workforce will come to order. I note that —

So Wednesday morning rolls around. And President Shafik sits at the witness stand with two of her trustees and the head of Columbia’s new anti-Semitism task force.

Columbia stands guilty of gross negligence at best and at worst has become a platform for those supporting terrorism and violence against the Jewish people.

And right off the bat, they’re put through a pretty humbling litany of some of the worst hits of what’s been happening on campus.

For example, just four days after the harrowing October 7 attack, a former Columbia undergraduate beat an Israeli student with a stick.

The Republican Chairwoman of the Committee, Virginia Foxx, starts reminding her that there was a student who was actually hit with a stick on campus. There was another gathering more recently glorifying Hamas and other terrorist organizations, and the kind of chants that have become an everyday chorus on campus, which many Jewish students see as threatening. But when the questioning starts, President Shafik is ready. One of the first ones she gets is the one that tripped up her colleagues.

Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Columbia’s code of conduct, Mr. Greenwald?

And she answers unequivocally.

Dr. Shafik?

Yes, it does.

And, Professor —

That would be a violation of Columbia’s rules. They would be punished.

As President of Columbia, what is it like when you hear chants like, by any means necessary or Intifada Revolution?

I find those chants incredibly distressing. And I wish profoundly that people would not use them on our campus.

And in some of the most interesting exchanges of the hearing, President Shafik actually opens Columbia’s disciplinary books.

We have already suspended 15 students from Columbia. We have six on disciplinary probation. These are more disciplinary actions that have been taken probably in the last decade at Columbia. And —

She talks about the number of students that have been suspended, but also the number of faculty that she’s had removed from the classroom that are being investigated for comments that either violate some of Columbia’s rules or make students uncomfortable. One case in particular really underscores this.

And that’s of a Middle Eastern studies professor named Joseph Massad. He wrote an essay not long after Hamas invaded Israel and killed 1,200 people, according to the Israeli government, where he described that attack with adjectives like awesome. Now, he said they’ve been misinterpreted, but a lot of people have taken offense to those comments.

Ms. Stefanik, you’re recognized for five minutes.

Thank you, Chairwoman. I want to follow up on my colleague, Rep Walberg’s question regarding Professor Joseph Massad. So let me be clear, President —

And so Representative Elise Stefanik, the same Republican who had tripped up Claudine Gay of Harvard and others in the last hearing, really starts digging in to President Shafik about these things at Columbia.

He is still Chair on the website. So has he been terminated as Chair?

Congresswoman, I —

And Shafik’s answers are maybe a little surprising.

— before getting back to you. I can confirm —

I know you confirmed that he was under investigation.

Yes, I can confirm that. But I —

Did you confirm he was still the Chair?

He says that Columbia is taking his case seriously. In fact, he’s under investigation right now.

Well, let me ask you this.

I need to check.

Will you make the commitment to remove him as Chair?

And when Stefanik presses her to commit to removing him from a campus leadership position —

I think that would be — I think — I would — yes. Let me come back with yes. But I think I — I just want to confirm his current status before I write —

We’ll take that as a yes, that you will confirm that he will no longer be chair.

Shafik seems to pause and think and then agree to it on the spot, almost like she is making administrative decisions with or in front of Congress.

Now, we did some reporting after the fact. And it turns out the Professor didn’t even realize he was under investigation. So he’s learning about this from the hearing too. So what this all adds up to, I think, is a performance so in line with what the lawmakers themselves wanted to hear, that at certain points, these Republicans didn’t quite know what to do with it. They were like the dog that caught the car.

Columbia beats Harvard and UPenn.

One of them, a Republican from Florida, I think at one point even marvelled, well, you beat Harvard and Penn.

Y’all all have done something that they weren’t able to do. You’ve been able to condemn anti-Semitism without using the phrase, it depends on the context. But the —

So Columbia’s president has passed this test before this committee.

Yeah, this big moment that tripped up her predecessors and cost them their jobs, it seems like she has cleared that hurdle and dispatched with the Congressional committee that could have been one of the biggest threats to her presidency.

Without objection, there being no further business, the committee stands adjourned. [BANGS GAVEL]

But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions. They saw a president who was so eager to please Republicans in Congress that she was willing to sell out some of the University’s students and faculty and trample on cherished ideas like academic freedom and freedom of expression that have been a bedrock of American higher education for a really long time.

And there was no clearer embodiment of that than what had happened that morning just as President Shafik was going to testify before Congress. A group of students before dawn set up tents in the middle of Columbia’s campus and declared themselves a pro-Palestinian encampment in open defiance of the very rules that Dr. Shafik had put in place to try and get these protests under control.

So these students in real-time are beginning to test some of the things that Columbia’s president has just said before Congress.

Exactly. And so instead of going to celebrate her successful appearance before Congress, Shafik walks out of the hearing room and gets in a black SUV to go right back to that war room, where she’s immediately confronted with a major dilemma. It basically boils down to this, she had just gone before Congress and told them, I’m going to get tough on these protests. And here they were. So either she gets tough and risks inflaming tension on campus or she holds back and does nothing and her words before Congress immediately look hollow.

And what does she decide?

So for the next 24 hours, she tries to negotiate off ramps. She consults with her Deans and the New York Police Department. And it all builds towards an incredibly consequential decision. And that is, for the first time in decades, to call the New York City Police Department onto campus in riot gear and break this thing up, suspend the students involved, and then arrest them.

To essentially eliminate this encampment.

Eliminate the encampment and send a message, this is not going to be tolerated. But in trying to quell the unrest, Shafik actually feeds it. She ends up leaving student protesters and the faculty who support them feeling betrayed and pushes a campus that was already on edge into a full blown crisis.

Yes, this is she.

Hi, Isabella. It’s Michael Barbaro from “The Daily.”

Hi. Nice to meet you.

Earlier this week, we called Isabella Ramírez, the Editor in Chief of Columbia’s undergraduate newspaper, “The Columbia Daily Spectator,” which has been closely tracking both the protests and the University’s response to them since October 7.

So, I mean, in your mind, how do we get to this point? I wonder if you can just briefly describe the key moments that bring us to where we are right now.

Sure. Since October 7, there has certainly been constant escalation in terms of tension on campus. And there have been a variety of moves that I believe have distanced the student body, the faculty, from the University and its administration, specifically the suspension of Columbia’s chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. And that became a huge moment in what was characterized as suppression of pro-Palestinian activism on campus, effectively rendering those groups, quote, unquote, unauthorized.

What was the college’s explanation for that?

They had cited in that suspension a policy which states that a demonstration must be approved within a certain window, and that there must be an advance notice, and that there’s a process for getting an authorized demonstration. But the primary point was this policy that they were referring to, which we later reported, was changed before the suspension.

So it felt a little ad hoc to people?

Yes, it certainly came as a surprise, especially at “Spectator.” We’re nerds of the University in the sense that we are familiar with faculty and University governance. But even to us, we had no idea where this policy was coming from. And this suspension was really the first time that it entered most students’ sphere.

Columbia’s campus is so known for its activism. And so in my time of being a reporter, of being an editor, I’ve overseen several protests. And I’ve never seen Columbia penalize a group for, quote, unquote, not authorizing a protest. So that was certainly, in our minds, unprecedented.

And I believe part of the justification there was, well, this is a different time. And I think that is a reasonable thing to say. But I think a lot of students, they felt it was particularly one-sided, that it was targeting a specific type of speech or a specific type of viewpoint. Although, the University, of course, in its explicit policies, did not outline, and was actually very explicit about not targeting specific viewpoints —

So just to be super clear, it felt to students — and it sounds like, journalistically, it felt to you — that the University was coming down in a uniquely one-sided way against students who were supporting Palestinian rights and may have expressed some frustrations with Israel in that moment.

Yes. Certainly —

Isabella says that this was just the beginning of a really tense period between student protesters and the University. After those two student groups were suspended, campus protests continued. Students made a variety of demands. They asked that the University divest from businesses that profit from Israel’s military operations in Gaza. But instead of making any progress, the protests are met with further crackdown by the University.

And so as Isabella and her colleagues at the college newspaper see it, there’s this overall chilling effect that occurs. Some students become fearful that if they participate in any demonstrations, they’re going to face disciplinary action. So fast forward now to April, when these student protesters learned that President Shafik is headed to Washington for her congressional testimony. It’s at this moment that they set out to build their encampment.

I think there was obviously a lot of intention in timing those two things. I think it’s inherently a critique on a political pressure and this congressional pressure that we saw build up against, of course, Claudine Gay at Harvard and Magill at UPenn. So I think a lot of students and faculty have been frustrated at this idea that there are not only powers at the University that are dictating what’s happening, but there are perhaps external powers that are also guiding the way here in terms of what the University feels like it must do or has to do.

And I think that timing was super crucial. Having the encampment happen on the Wednesday morning of the hearing was an incredible, in some senses, interesting strategy to direct eyes to different places.

All eyes were going to be on Shafik in DC. But now a lot of eyes are on New York. The encampment is set up in the middle of the night slash morning, prior to the hearing. And so what effectively happens is they caught Shafik when she wasn’t on campus, when a lot of senior administration had their resources dedicated to supporting Shafik in DC.

And you have all of those people not necessarily out of commission, but with their focus elsewhere. So the encampment is met with very little resistance at the beginning. There were public safety officers floating around and watching. But at the very beginning hours, I think there was a sense of, we did it.

[CHANTING]: Disclose! Divest! We will not stop! We will not rest. Disclose! Divest! We will not stop!

It would be quite surprising to anybody and an administrator to now suddenly see dozens of tents on this lawn in a way that I think very purposely puts an imagery of, we’re here to stay. As the morning evolved and congressional hearings continued —

Minouche Shafik, open your eyes! Use of force, genocide!

Then we started seeing University delegates that were coming to the encampment saying, you may face disciplinary action for continuing to be here. I think that started around almost — like 9:00 or 10:00 AM, they started handing out these code of conduct violation notices.

Hell no! Hell no! Hell no!

Then there started to be more public safety action and presence. So they started barricading the entrances. The day progressed, there was more threat of discipline. The students became informed that if they continue to stay, they will face potential academic sanctions, potential suspension.

The more they try to silence us, the louder we will be! The more they —

I think a lot of people were like, OK, you’re threatening us with suspension. But so what?

This is about these systems that Minouche Shafik, that the Board of Trustees, that Columbia University is complicit in.

What are you going to do to try to get us out of here? And that was, obviously, promptly answered.

This is the New York State Police Department.

We will not stop!

You are attempting participate in an unauthorized encampment. You will be arrested and charged with trespassing.

My phone blew up, obviously, from the reporters, from the editors, of saying, oh my god, the NYPD is on our campus. And as soon as I saw that, I came out. And I saw a huge crowd of students and affiliates on campus watching the lawns. And as I circled around that crowd, I saw the last end of the New York Police Department pulling away protesters and clearing out the last of the encampment.

[CHANTING]: We love you! We will get justice for you! We see you! We love you! We will get justice for you! We see you! We love you! We will get justice for you! We see you! We love you! We will get justice for you!

It was something truly unimaginable, over 100 students slash other individuals are arrested from our campus, forcefully removed. And although they were suspended, there was a feeling of traumatic event that has just happened to these students, but also this sense of like, OK, the worst of the worst that could have happened to us just happened.

And for those students who maybe couldn’t go back to — into campus, now all of their peers, who were supporters or are in solidarity, are — in some sense, it’s further emboldened. They’re now not just sitting on the lawns for a pro-Palestinian cause, but also for the students, who have endured quite a lot.

So the crackdown, sought by the president and enforced by the NYPD, ends up, you’re saying, becoming a galvanizing force for a broader group of Columbia students than were originally drawn to the idea of ever showing up on the center of campus and protesting?

Yeah, I can certainly speak to the fact that I’ve seen my own peers, friends, or even acquaintances, who weren’t necessarily previously very involved in activism and organizing efforts, suddenly finding themselves involved.

Can I — I just have a question for you, which is all journalism, student journalism or not student journalism, is a first draft of history. And I wonder if we think of this as a historic moment for Columbia, how you imagine it’s going to be remembered.

Yeah, there is no doubt in my mind that this will be a historic moment for Colombia.

I think that this will be remembered as a moment in which the fractures were laid bare. Really, we got to see some of the disunity of the community in ways that I have never really seen it before. And what we’ll be looking to is, where do we go from here? How does Colombia repair? How do we heal from all of this? so That is the big question in terms of what will happen.

Nick, Isabella Ramírez just walked us through what this has all looked like from the perspective of a Columbia student. And from what she could tell, the crackdown ordered by President Shafik did not quell much of anything. It seemed, instead, to really intensify everything on campus. I’m curious what this has looked like for Shafik.

It’s not just the students who are upset. You have faculty, including professors, who are not necessarily sympathetic to the protesters’ view of the war, who are really outraged about what Shafik has done here. They feel that she’s crossed a boundary that hasn’t been crossed on Columbia’s campus in a really long time.

And so you start to hear things by the end of last week like censure, no confidence votes, questions from her own professors about whether or not she can stay in power. So this creates a whole new front for her. And on top of it all, as this is going on, the encampment itself starts to reform tent-by-tent —

— almost in the same place that it was. And Shafik decides that the most important thing she could do is to try and take the temperature down, which means letting the encampment stand. Or in other words, leaning in the other direction. This time, we’re going to let the protesters have their say for a little while longer.

The problem with that is that, over the weekend, a series of images start to emerge from on campus and just off of it of some really troubling anti-Semitic episodes. In one case, a guy holds up a poster in the middle of campus and points it towards a group of Jewish students who are counter protesting. And it says, I’m paraphrasing here, Hamas’ next targets.

I saw an image of that. What it seemed to evoke was the message that Hamas should murder those Jewish students. That’s the way the Jewish students interpreted it.

It’s a pretty straightforward and jarring statement. At the same time, just outside of Columbia’s closed gates —

Stop killing children!

— protestors are showing up from across New York City. It’s hard to tell who’s affiliated with Columbia, who’s not.

Go back to Poland! Go back to Poland!

There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe.

In other words, a clear message, you’re not welcome here.

Right. In fact, go back to the places where the Holocaust was committed.

Exactly. And this is not representative of the vast majority of the protesters in the encampment, who mostly had been peaceful. They would later hold a Seder, actually, with some of the pro-Palestinian Jewish protesters in their ranks. But those videos are reaching members of Congress, the very same Republicans that Shafik had testified in front of just a few days before. And now they’re looking and saying, you have lost control of your campus, you’ve turned back on your word to us, and you need to resign.

They call for her outright resignation over this.

That’s right. Republicans in New York and across the country began to call for her to step down from her position as president of Columbia.

So Shafik’s dilemma here is pretty extraordinary. She has set up this dynamic where pleasing these members of Congress would probably mean calling in the NYPD all over again to sweep out this encampment, which would mean further alienating and inflaming students and faculty, who are still very upset over the first crackdown. And now both ends of this spectrum, lawmakers in Washington, folks on the Columbia campus, are saying she can’t lead the University over this situation before she’s even made any fateful decision about what to do with this second encampment. Not a good situation.

No. She’s besieged on all sides. For a while, the only thing that she can come up with to offer is for classes to go hybrid for the remainder of the semester.

So students who aren’t feeling safe in this protest environment don’t necessarily have to go to class.

Right. And I think if we zoom out for a second, it’s worth bearing in mind that she tried to choose a different path here than her counterparts at Harvard or Penn. And after all of this, she’s kind of ended up in the exact same thicket, with people calling for her job with the White House, the Mayor of New York City, and others. These are Democrats. Maybe not calling on her to resign quite yet, but saying, I don’t know what’s going on your campus. This does not look good.

That reality, that taking a different tack that was supposed to be full of learnings and lessons from the stumbles of her peers, the fact that didn’t really work suggests that there’s something really intractable going on here. And I wonder how you’re thinking about this intractable situation that’s now arrived on these college campuses.

Well, I don’t think it’s just limited to college campuses. We have seen intense feelings about this conflict play out in Hollywood. We’ve seen them in our politics in all kinds of interesting ways.

In our media.

We’ve seen it in the media. But college campuses, at least in their most idealized form, are something special. They’re a place where students get to go for four years to think in big ways about moral questions, and political questions, and ideas that help shape the world they’re going to spend the rest of their lives in.

And so when you have a question that feels as urgent as this war does for a lot of people, I think it reverberates in an incredibly intense way on those campuses. And there’s something like — I don’t know if it’s quite a contradiction of terms, but there’s a collision of different values at stake. So universities thrive on the ability of students to follow their minds and their voices where they go, to maybe even experiment a little bit and find those things.

But there are also communities that rely on people being able to trust each other and being able to carry out their classes and their academic endeavors as a collective so they can learn from one another. So in this case, that’s all getting scrambled. Students who feel strongly about the Palestinian cause feel like the point is disruption, that something so big, and immediate, and urgent is happening that they need to get in the faces of their professors, and their administrators, and their fellow students.

Right. And set up an encampment in the middle of campus, no matter what the rules say.

Right. And from the administration’s perspective, they say, well, yeah, you can say that and you can think that. And that’s an important process. But maybe there’s some bad apples in your ranks. Or though you may have good intentions, you’re saying things that you don’t realize the implications of. And they’re making this environment unsafe for others. Or they’re grinding our classes to a halt and we’re not able to function as a University.

So the only way we’re going to be able to move forward is if you will respect our rules and we’ll respect your point of view. The problem is that’s just not happening. Something is not connecting with those two points of view. And as if that’s not hard enough, you then have Congress and the political system with its own agenda coming in and putting its thumb on a scale of an already very difficult situation.

Right. And at this very moment, what we know is that the forces that you just outlined have created a dilemma, an uncertainty of how to proceed, not just for President Shafik and the students and faculty at Columbia, but for a growing number of colleges and universities across the country. And by that, I mean, this thing that seemed to start at Columbia is literally spreading.

Absolutely. We’re talking on a Wednesday afternoon. And these encampments have now started cropping up at universities from coast-to-coast, at Harvard and Yale, but also at University of California, at the University of Texas, at smaller campuses in between. And at each of these institutions, there’s presidents and deans, just like President Shafik at Columbia, who are facing a really difficult set of choices. Do they call in the police? The University of Texas in Austin this afternoon, we saw protesters physically clashing with police.

Do they hold back, like at Harvard, where there were dramatic videos of students literally running into Harvard yard with tents. They were popping up in real-time. And so Columbia, really, I think, at the end of the day, may have kicked off some of this. But they are now in league with a whole bunch of other universities that are struggling with the same set of questions. And it’s a set of questions that they’ve had since this war broke out.

And now these schools only have a week or two left of classes. But we don’t know when these standoffs are going to end. We don’t know if students are going to leave campus for the summer. We don’t know if they’re going to come back in the fall and start protesting right away, or if this year is going to turn out to have been an aberration that was a response to a really awful, bloody war, or if we’re at the beginning of a bigger shift on college campuses that will long outlast this war in the Middle East.

Here’s what else you need to know today. The United Nations is calling for an independent investigation into two mass graves found after Israeli forces withdrew from hospitals in Gaza. Officials in Gaza said that some of the bodies found in the graves were Palestinians who had been handcuffed or shot in the head and accused Israel of killing and burying them. In response, Israel said that its soldiers had exhumed bodies in one of the graves as part of an effort to locate Israeli hostages.

And on Wednesday, Hamas released a video of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American dual citizen, whom Hamas has held hostage since October 7. It was the first time that he has been shown alive since his captivity began. His kidnapping was the subject of a “Daily” episode in October that featured his mother, Rachel. In response to Hamas’s video, Rachel issued a video of her own, in which she spoke directly to her son.

Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech.

The best identity theft protection is a service that meets your needs at the price you're willing to pay. While our system for rating these services is more nuanced than this, at the core of our rating system is the balance between the features provided and the cost of those features. 

How to choose an identity theft protection service

The best identity theft protection service is the one that meets your needs at a price you can afford. For example, if your identity has been stolen before, you're more likely to be targeted again. You may need to arm yourself more heavily than you would otherwise with features like dark web monitoring, public records monitoring, and identity theft recovery.

On the other hand, if you're concerned about your children, consider looking for identity protection that offers features for children. Most identity theft protection services in our guide provide features specifically for children, like Aura's hate speech monitoring or IdentityForce's Childwatch, which includes social media monitoring and Child Credit Activity Monitoring.

Even if you can't find a perfect plan that aligns with your needs, some protection is better than none. Most services also offer a free trial, so you can test them before buying. Look for a service with security tools you'll actually use. You may even choose a service for superficial reasons (like a layout or color scheme you prefer). If one service inspires you to be more proactive about protecting your information, that's a selling point.

The monthly cost of the identity protection services on this list ranges from $12 to $29.95 for their individual plans, though you can find services with prices outside this range on either end. Some of these services will offer family plans at a discounted rate.

Protecting your identity and other sensitive personal information is like protecting your home against fire. Most houses have fire prevention measures baked into their design, including fire-resistant materials, landscaping precautions, and fire hydrant access. You should have early detection and alert systems like smoke, heat, or flame detectors and suppression systems like fire extinguishers and sprinklers. Hopefully, you observe basic fire safety protocols like storing flammable materials properly and not leaving open flames unattended. Finally, you should have fire insurance to protect yourself financially.

None of those measures guarantees your house won't catch fire, but collectively, they mitigate the risk and extent of fire damage. Similarly, identity theft protection doesn't guarantee your personal information will remain secure, but it reduces the likelihood you'll experience the worst outcomes of having your identity stolen. 

Like fire protection, identity theft protection isn't a single measure but an array of complementary measures designed to safeguard your personal information.

Types of identity theft protection

Standard features offered by identity theft protection companies generally fit into one of the following three categories:

  • Monitoring and alerts — Given how quickly identity thieves put stolen data to ill use, early detection and warning are critical to minimizing damage. Identity theft detection companies monitor your personal information for suspicious activity and notify you when something is amiss. What you get varies among companies and plans but usually includes monitoring of credit reports, social security numbers, property and court records, and more.
  • Security tools — While security measures aren't foolproof, your data is less vulnerable with some of the features that identity theft protection services offer. This includes tools like antivirus and malware protection, a virtual private network (VPN) for safe browsing, and password management.
  • Recovery — When your personal information has been compromised, identity theft protection can help you limit further damage by freezing your credit and exposed accounts. It can also help you recover your identity and cover related expenses, though it's unlikely to reimburse direct losses resulting from fraud. 

Identity theft protection and credit monitoring

One identity protection feature to prioritize is reporting from all three major credit bureaus ; many entry-level plans only monitor one bureau, leaving room for suspicious activity to slip through unnoticed. You should also look for a service that gets audited regularly by independent security experts and deletes your information when you cancel your subscription (rather than holding onto it indefinitely).

How to report identity theft

If you suspect your identity has been stolen, your first action should be to freeze your credit reports to prevent the thief from applying for credit in your name. It's free and won't damage your credit. You can always unfreeze your reports later when the dust settles. 

Your next steps to reporting identity theft depend on the nature of the identity theft and any fraud that may have already occurred:

  • File an identity theft report: IdentityTheft.gov is a Federal Trade Commission program that will help you create a recovery plan and generate an identity theft report that you can use later as documentation. You can file a report over the phone at 877-438-4338, though you won't receive that identity theft report.
  • Report the fraud to involved companies: Notify any banks, credit card issuers, or other companies involved in your identity theft case. The sooner you do this, the better. If you don't report within a certain timeframe, you could be liable for any debts incurred.
  • Notify the credit bureaus: Call at least one of the main credit bureaus to let them know your identity has been stolen. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires credit bureaus to notify the others, and you'll receive a 90-day initial fraud alert , which means creditors have to take reasonable steps to verify the identity of anyone applying for credit under your name. Later, with an identity theft report, you can extend the fraud alert to seven years.
  • Contact law enforcement: Depending on the situation, you may want to file a police report, especially if you know who stole your identity. Some creditors may also require you to file a report with law enforcement.

If your Social Security number has been compromised, and you continue to have issues with identity theft, you may be eligible to get a new Social Security number . However, the requirements for a new Social Security number are high. You need to have been repeatedly targeted by identity thieves or in situations of harassment, abuse, or life endangerment. You'll need to contact your local Social Security office and arrange an in-person appointment.

How to prevent identity theft

While an identity protection service will make it harder for hackers and identity thieves to use your identity, Eva Velasquez, founder and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, says that "hiring a service does not mean you can or should abdicate all responsibility for good identity and cyber hygiene." She says that many financial organizations may refuse to reimburse victims if they determine the victims didn't take sufficient care of their credentials and accounts.

Because identity theft is often a crime of opportunity, taking steps to reduce the risk of identity theft can go a long way toward preventing it entirely. You can do a lot to protect your personal information by practicing good data hygiene and staying vigilant about how your information is used and distributed. Simple steps like using strong passwords and antivirus software, securing your mail, and regularly reviewing account statements for suspicious activity will help you prevent and detect identity theft.

You can also look into various products beyond identity theft protection to prevent identity theft. You ask the credit bureaus to  freeze your credit  or place a fraud alert on your  credit reports , preventing identity thieves from borrowing money using your credit. These are free services offered by credit bureaus.

Those practices, combined with well-rounded identity theft protection, will significantly reduce the risk of having your personal information compromised.

Compare the best identity theft protection services

Best overall: norton 360 with lifelock select.

Cost:  $17.99 monthly or $179.99 annually

LifeLock is an identity theft protection service operated by Norton, one of the leading brands in cybersecurity. Unfortunately, LifeLock falls short compared to the other products included in this guide. However, the service gains a lot of value when paired with Norton 360, Norton's cybersecurity protection plan. 

Norton 360 with LifeLock offers three plans: Standard, Advantage, and Ultimate Plus. The Standard plan offers the most value for its price and a sizable first-year discount. However, for more serious identity protection, it may be worth upgrading to one of the advanced plans.

Best for complete coverage: IdentityForce UltraSecure+Credit

Cost:  $29.95 monthly or $299.50 annually

Ultra Secure+Credit is a product of TransUnion, but the +Credit plan also covers Experian and Equifax. It offers broad monitoring capability, including social media accounts, mobile device scanning, and dark web data analysis. It can also alert you of suspicious activity in your banking and investment accounts, in addition to credit-related fraud alerts.

On top of monitoring, Ultra Secure+Credit also offers cybersecurity features such as an online vault for storing sensitive digital documents and a VPN. Ultra Secure+Credit also offers an entry-level plan with most of the same features apart from credit monitoring, which is a good fit for anyone who already has that base covered.

While standard pricing is $29.95 a month, you can rummage around online for IdentityForce discounts. In the past, we've found lower prices by Googling "IdentityForce discount."

Best for value: IDShield 3 Bureau Individual Plan

Cost:  Starting at $14.95/month

IDShield offers comparable protection to Ultra Secure+Credit at a lower price if you're paying monthly. You'll get all the essentials like three-bureau credit monitoring, alerts, and various cybersecurity and device protection tools. The few features IDShield lacks (like junk mail removal) aren't essential, so going without them is a reasonable tradeoff if cost is a priority.

One negative of IDShield is that it tends to get lower marks for its interface; if that deters you from using the security features, then whatever you save in monthly fees is nullified. IDShield is a well-rounded plan, but you should test it out with the 30-day free trial.

Best for families: Aura – All-In-One ID Theft Protection

Cost:  $15 monthly or $144 annually

Aura provides fewer monitoring services than Ultra Secure+Credit and IDShield — it doesn't include social media, for example. It still offers well-rounded protection with monitoring of all three credit bureaus and the standard security tools, as well as email aliases to reduce spam and exposure to data breaches.

Aura All-In-One shines brightest with its couple and family plans, which provide the same protections for additional members (children or adults) at a heavily discounted cost per person. Aura's family plan also offers parental controls for mobile devices.

Best for flexibility: Identity Guard

Cost: $8.99 to $29.99 monthly for individuals, $14.99 to $39.99 monthly for families

Owned by Aura, Identity Guard has three core plans: Value, Total, and Ultra. With a family version for each of these tiers, Identity Guard has six plans overall. Even without the annual discounts applied, Identity Guard's Value plan is the cheapest service on this list. Its more expensive plans are still competitively priced compared to other services on this list, though you'll get a much better deal if you commit to an annual plan. 

One thing to note is that Identity Guard reserves its White Glove fraud resolution service for its Ultra plan, significantly reducing the utility of the Value and Total plans.

Best for basic coverage: PrivacyGuard Identity Protection

Cost: $9.99 per month

PrivacyGuard has some gaps in its identity theft protection . Notably, its credit monitoring feature is a completely separate plan from its identity theft coverage unless you purchase the most expensive bundle. However, we're just recommending the identity protection service alone, as you can fill its credit monitoring gap using other tools that are available for free.

PrivacyGuard provides many services that are harder to replicate without paying, like dark web scanning and public records monitoring at lower prices than its competitors. You'll also get tools to secure your browser and keyboard. PrivacyGuard also provides bank account and credit card monitoring, which are surprisingly scarce features among identity protection services.

We interviewed identity theft experts to inform our picks for the best identity protection services. These answers have been edited for concision. Here's what they had to say:

Is it worth it?

Eva Velasquez, CEO and president of the Identity Theft Resource Center:

Paid identity protection services can have value for individuals and families that have the financial means to pay for the services. These services can take some of the leg work out of monitoring your identity and the recovery process should an identity crime occur. I often use the analogy of hiring a pet groomer or grooming my dog myself. I can bathe and groom my dog for "free," but I do have to consider the cost of the shampoo, tools, water, and my time versus hiring someone to do it for me. Both are legitimate ways to meet the need but depend on my personal preference.

Before you purchase, make sure that you don't already have this benefit available to you. Some homeowners or renters insurance plans have riders that provide this coverage. Some employers offer these services as an employee benefit for free or at a discount. Some membership organizations you already belong to may also offer this as a benefit at a reduced cost.

Jeanne Kelly, credit coach and founder of The Kelly Group:

Absolutely. It is crucial to recognize that even if you are cautious about sharing your personal information, it is still stored in various databases, such as those of financial institutions, schools, and medical offices. Therefore, having identity theft protection ensures that you are promptly alerted in case of any issues and provides professional assistance in restoring your identity.

Paul Kim, associate editor of credit scores at Business Insider: 

Identity protection can be a nice thing to have for peace of mind. However, most people don't need to spring for the fanciest, most expensive plan out there. Some of the cheaper plans, plus a little vigilance on your part, will often do the trick. 

How do I determine the level of identity protection I need?

Ask yourself the following questions: How many people do I intend to cover? What are the ages of the individuals needing services? Do they have access to, and can they make effective use of digital platforms? How digitally engaged are they? Make sure you purchase coverage that meets your individual needs.

For example, if you purchase a family plan with features including cyberbullying monitoring, is that something you currently need? Are your children of an age that they are engaged online, and this feature is helpful? If you have plans available through an employee benefits program or insurance policy, ask your benefits administrator or insurance broker for assistance in determining the level of coverage that is most suitable for you.

Kelly: 

Conduct thorough research to understand the available options. It is not sufficient to rely solely on receiving alerts. It is essential to find an identity theft protection service that not only notifies you but also offers robust support in resolving identity theft issues. Think of it as having an alarm system that also sends help when triggered. Look for services that provide the expertise of private investigators to assist you throughout the identity restoration process.

When shopping for identity protection, you should think about how much of a risk identity theft poses. Obviously, everyone can be targeted, but some people are at higher risk. Certain states have higher rates of identity theft than others. Additionally, people who were victims of identity theft are more likely to be targeted than those who have never had their identities stolen.  

What are the most important identity theft protection features?

Transparency. This is an individual choice. The important features are going to vary based on the individual. However, a service that is transparent about what it covers and what it does not is key. Make sure you read all the information to understand what is covered, how the service is provided, and the limitations of the service, if any. Read the terms of any insurance plans carefully and ensure you understand what losses are actually covered and what your duty of care or other obligations are to seek reimbursement for losses.

One crucial feature is the ability to grant power of attorney or authorization for someone else to handle the intricate process of restoring your identity. Dealing with identity theft can be incredibly time-consuming, often requiring hundreds of hours. By having experts handle the work on your behalf, you can save valuable time and ensure that the restoration process is handled effectively. It is crucial to proactively obtain identity theft protection before any issues arise.

Two features I look out for are dark web monitoring and court records monitoring because it's difficult to replicate these yourself. If you're looking for basic identity protection that may not offer every type of monitoring, ensure that the service will at least monitor the dark web and court records. 

What makes an identity theft protection service good?

In addition to my response above, also read consumer reviews and look at third-party accreditation sites such as the Better Business Bureau. Reading reviews will allow you to determine if there is a pattern of behavior that demonstrates poor customer experience. While no company is going to be perfect, seeing how they resolve customer complaints and issues will be useful in making your determination to do business with them.

A good identity theft protection service should monitor multiple aspects of your identity, including your social security number, driver's license, passport ID, medical card, social media accounts, and address changes with the postal service. Remember, identity theft encompasses more than just credit-related fraud. For instance, if someone gains access to your medical ID or driver's license number, they can exploit it to receive medical services or cash checks under your identity. Therefore, ensure that the service you choose monitors these essential areas. Additionally, in the event of an identity theft incident, make sure the service provides comprehensive support for identity restoration.

The identity protection services I pay particular attention to will offer solutions for the before, during, and after of identity theft. So, it'll offer features that protect your identity before any theft occurs, like cybersecurity measures and VPNs. The identity protection service will also provide identity monitoring to alert you when identity theft occurs. Lastly, a good identity protection service will have restoration experts who will guide you through the process of recovering your identity. Ideally, they'll do most of the work for you.

How we rate identity theft protection services

We rate services on a scale from one to five stars, with five being the highest. We apply these ratings to the overall service and the individual plans it offers. 

Provided features (45%)

Most identity theft protection services will boast a long list of features that they provide. You will likely never notice some of these features running in the background, such as home title monitoring. Others, you'll be able to achieve for free elsewhere, such as credit freezes .

When we look at a service's features, we pay attention to particular features that make or break a protection service. We also look at any unique features that a service provides, making it stand out from other services.

Fraud resolution (20%)

Identity monitoring matters little if a service doesn't also provide tools to help you recover your identity . That's why it's so important that your identity theft protection service has some form of fraud resolution. Many services also offer lost wallet protection, which assists you in making all the necessary cancellations and replacements that come with losing your wallet or having it stolen.

Ideally, a service will provide a fraud resolution expert dedicated to your profile if dealing with a stolen identity. This person will help you navigate the process of recovering your identity and assets. They'll also help you contact the three major credit bureaus and any other involved parties to report identity theft .

It's also important to ensure that your identity theft protection service has some form of identity insurance that will help you cover any monetary losses due to fraud.

Dark web and court records monitoring (10%)

While some features that identity theft protection services perform can be done on your own or found in other services, dark web monitoring and court records monitoring are particularly hard to find elsewhere.

Dark web monitoring scans the dark web (which you likely do not know how to access) to see if anyone is selling your personal information. Court records monitoring scans public records for your information in case anyone has given your information in their criminal case. 

Credit monitoring capabilities (5%)

Credit monitoring is a cornerstone of all identity theft protection services, alerting you of any changes to your credit report. Any unexpected updates in your credit report, like a new line of credit , are likely signs of identity theft. 

While the presence of credit monitoring capabilities is important in securing your identity, we've deprioritized it in our ratings. This is because you can find free credit monitoring services that will provide you with the same monitoring and credit reports that you'd pay for with some of these services. You can also request a  free credit report weekly from each of the three credit bureaus.

Unique features (10%)

The truth of identity protection is that most services are very similar to each other in what they offer. What distinguishes certain services are standouts that catch our eye.

For example, PrivacyGuard identity theft protection service includes a credit score simulator, which will give you a rough estimate of how your credit score will change with certain actions, such as a new loan. More cybersecurity-focused services, will include a VPN, secured document storage, and anti-malware protection.

Some services that offer family plans will also have parental features, such as social media monitoring. Some services will also monitor your children's online activity for cyberbullying or hate speech. Other plans, such as Identity Guard , feature an optimized mobile experience, providing users with peace of mind while on the go.  

Price of service (45%)

Tiered plans (35%)

Ultimately, many identity theft protection services offer very similar features. Because so many services often perform very similar functions, the main distinguishing factor between these services is how much they cost. Many services will spread their array of features across different plans that get progressively more expensive the more protection it offers. 

For example, many services will include credit monitoring for one bureau in their basic tier and reserve three-bureau monitoring for their premium tier. Other services may give you dark web monitoring in the basic tier but withhold court records monitoring for higher tiers.

We prefer services that include their entire catalog of features in one overarching plan, like Aura identity theft protection. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that tiered services are bad. If you only need to reduce the risk of identity theft to a certain level, there's no need to pay a premium price when the basic plan will suffice. 

Group plans (10%)

Family plans and couples plans will give you and your loved ones the same level of protection for a discounted price. These services, such as those offered by IdentityIQ , also come with family-specific features tailored to monitoring your children's identity and online activity. 

Customer support (10%)

While price and features are the two most important factors we use to judge an identity theft protection service, we also recognize these services as businesses that need to be responsive to their customers. 

When we talk about customer support, we're looking aspects like cancellation policies, annual membership discounts, and free trials. We also look at a business's Better Business Bureau score to evaluate how they respond to customer complaints. 

We also look to see if there are any necessary qualifications to enroll in a service. Some credit cards have identity theft protection  that are only available to their cardholders, such as American Express CreditSecure. Another example is Complete ID, which is only available to Costco members.

What to know about identity theft protection service ratings

Our system for rating identity theft protection services balances the price of the service with the features that the service provides. It also acknowledges that these services are businesses that must be responsive to customers. 

While we can analyze these services on a tangible, quantifiable level, the best identity theft protection service is one that you'll actually use. A service may not have the most features, but if that service inspires you to be more proactive about protecting your information, that's a selling point. The next step is finding out how to get identity theft protection  that works for you.
