Having a properly formatted resume is more important today than before. Many companies are using applicant tracking systems (ATS)  to help sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive for a single position.  

The first step to scoring well with the software is to use the proper margins, spacing, and fonts . These are all standard settings when you create a new document in Microsoft Word, GoogleDoc, or other word processing programs, so no need to worry about setting them. In case you’d like to know what they are, the standard format is:

  • Margins are one-inch all around
  • Line spacing is single-space
  • Font size is set to 10 or 11 points

When listing your education and resume experience, you want to list them in a reverse chronological order, which is the standard for all resumes.

You also want to use a serif or sans serif font. For any resume, the work experience section is the golden ticket to impressing an employer.

In the caregiving industry, it tells hiring managers about your hands-on experience, skills, and the kind of care you can provide.

  • Start with the most recent role. Go for the reverse chronological order so employers can see your latest caregiving role first and know where you're coming from.

If you have at least three caretaking roles of 6 months or longer, you can leave off any positions that don’t highlight the right skill set or were so short that they might prompt your future employer to inquire why the job didn’t work out.

If you’ve never worked as a caregiver before, then three service-related positions will be your best bet. Just make sure to highlight how the skills you used in those jobs transfer to caregiving. It’s also important to tailor your resume for the type of caregiving you’ll be doing. If you’re working in a nursing home, you can reasonably assume you won’t be doing day-to-day grocery shopping or vacuuming floors. But these tasks are likely to be essential when you’re working with just one client in a private household.
