how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

There are 4 of us travelling on Saturday and we need to sit together.

Do I really need to pay extra to select 4 seats together considering most of the seats are not taken? Won't they sit us together anyway?

' class=

'There are 4 of us travelling on Saturday and we need to sit together.' With your word 'need' then I'd say yes, pay for seat assignments.

What is the routing you've booked for this Saturday?

One more think: looks like I can buy seats after a check in.

In which case I think it would make sense to check in early and see what seats has been assigned and if they are not together, buy only those seats that necessary. Since we have child , at least two seats will be together. So the worst case , I will have to buy 2 seats. But if I do it before a check in - I will have to buy 4 seats.

Am I missing something.

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

At a minimum you should book two seats now for an adult and child but if you want to all sit together just bite the bullet and buy four seats now.

Or is your wife giving you a hard time on this too?

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

If you want to sit together...pay.

If only 2 people need to sit together...pay.

If you roll the dice and lose, DON'T ask others who may have paid to change their seats so that you can sit together.

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

Just because you automatically get assigned two seats together for one adult and the child, doesn't mean there will be two more seats nearby that you can buy later. If you want to sit together, buy the seat reservations.

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

Out of interest how much $ is this debate about

If you need to sit together, then pay for seats to sit together.

What is the reason stopping you from doing this ?

**What is the reason stopping you from doing this ?**

From the original post....

"Do I really need to pay extra**

Looked at my reservation before the check in 24 hour period started and saw the seats have been already assigned. All 4 together.

Thanks everyone.

You got lucky, but what would you have done if you hadn’t. Keep in mind that people will not move for you because you didn’t pay for seats. They did and so they’re seated where they want to be.

Spirit Airlines airplane taking off on a runway

How to Avoid Spirit Airlines Fees and Charges: The Ultimate Guide

Sharing is caring!

Flying spirit airlines as a family can save you tons of money in travel costs, as the base airfare for Spirit Airlines flights is typically low.  As a family, we’ve flown Spirit Airlines many times, and it has allowed us to take more vacations per year and spend more money in the actual destination. This guide provides tips on how to avoid Spirit Airlines fees– from the time you book your ticket– until you arrive at your destionation.

We are fans of Spirit Airlines; however, you have to understand that Spirit Airlines is a budget airline and that you will be nickeled and dimed for every dollar spent, beyond the base fare.  Understanding that is key to avoiding Spirit Airlines fees, keeping costs down, and setting reasonable expectations.

Spirit Airlines’ tagline is “Less Money, More Go” and with a little bit of preplanning, patience and flexibility- this can be 100% accurate!

A List of Common Spirit Airline Fees, That Can be Avoided

These six fees are the most important Spirit Airlines fees to be aware of. If you can avoid or minimize these six fees you are doing pretty well.

  • Passenger Usage Fee: This is a $22.99 fee assessed per person, per ticket (leg), when tickets are purchased online.
  • Reserving Seats: At the time of booking you can pay to reserve seats, in order to ensure that your family sits together, or to ensure you get your favorite seats. Fees are $9-$77+ per person.
  • Boarding Pass & Online Check-in: Spirit Airlines charges $10 per boarding pass, if you need it printed at the airport.  They’ll also charge you $10 to check in with an agent, if you do not check in on the app, prior to arrival.
  • Baggage Fees: See chart below for cost of carry on and checked baggage.
  • Snacks & Drinks: See menu below for details on in-flight snack and beverage pricing.
  • In Flight Entertainment: You can purchase wi-fi or a wi-fi “streaming package” which would allow you to use your own streaming apps, such as Netflix or Hulu.

How to Avoid  Common Spirit Airline Fees

1. passenger usage fee : this is a $22.99 fee assessed by spirit airlines, per person-per leg of your trip., how to avoid the passenger usage fee:.

The first fee you’ll pay is the Passenger Usage Fee. The way to avoid the “Passenger Usage Fee” is to purchase your tickets at the airport.  Let’s say you have a family of 5. Purchasing your tickets online will cost you $229.9, for a non-stop round trip flight. And you most likely don’t even know you are paying this fee. If you have a layover in your itinerary the fee *could* be as high as $459.8.

If you purchase your tickets at a Spirit Airlines’ airport location, then this fee is not assessed.  Seriously.

I have personally done this, and it’s legit.  The trick is finding the time to ‘swing’ by the airport.  The time we did this we happened to be driving to Wisconsin and drove by O’hare airport in Chicago.  We swung in, I ran into the airport- and purchased tickets for our upcoming trip to Phoenix, Arizona. You’ll be waiting in the same line as the check-in people, so depending on the time of day it may take a while.  However, when we did it there was no line, and the whole thing took about 10 minutes.

When you purchase Spirit Airline tickets at the airport, all they give you is a receipt-like a grocery store receipt. However, when you get home you can double check your reservation with your confirmation number, and update any information online.

TWTL Tip: You’ll want to check the hours of operations for your local Spirit Airlines airport location , as you don’t want to show up when they are closed.

2. Pre-booking seats: Booking seats-at anytime prior to departure- will cost you between $1-$150, per person, per flight.

How to avoid paying for seat selection:.

When you are booking tickets the system will ask you if you’d like to purchase pre-selected seats. The way to avoid the Spirit Airlines seat pre-booking fee is to not pre-book seats 🙂

If you do not pre-book seats then you can go onto the app 24 hours before your flight and select seats for free.  If  you don’t select seats prior to arriving at the airport then Spirit Airlines will likely assign you seats.  It’s also possible that when you arrive at the airport the agent won’t have any seats to *assign* and you’ll have to wait until you arrive at the gate to receive your seat assignment.  If this happens to you-try not to panic!

I’ve been told by a Spirit Agent that if a family doesn’t purchase seats that they’ll be seated together nonetheless. Having said that, if you do not purchase seats in advance it is *possible* that your family will not be able to sit together.

We’ve flown Spirit Airlines 4-5 times as a family, and we’ve never pre-selected seats, and we’ve always sat together.  However, if you do not pre-purchase seats you have to be prepared that your family may be split up. If that happens, and you have to negotiate with other passengers, you will have to contend with passengers who have paid for their selected seats.

TWTL Tip: There are restrictions on where children can sit, and also where car seats can be placed. Check out this in depth article on how to select Spirit Airlines seats for families.

3. Online Check In: Checking in at the airport will cost you $10 per person

How to avoid the spirit airines check in fee :.

The third and fourth fees go hand in hand. Avoid the Spirit Airlines check in fee by checking in on the app.  In fact, about the only thing you can do on the Spirit Airlines app is check in! Check-in begins 24 hours before departure and ends an hour prior to departure.

This is the easiest Spirit Airlines fee to avoid!

4. Boarding Passes: Having the Spirit Airlines agent print your boarding pass will cost you $10 per person (same $10 as checking in at the airport)

How to avoid the spirit airlines boarding pass fee:.

You can avoid the boarding pass fee in one of two ways:   (1) print your family’s boarding passes out at home, and bring them with you to the airport.  (2) Or, you can save them on your smartphone and the TSA agent will be able to scan your boarding passes right from your phone.

TWTL Tip: If one family member is loading all boarding passes onto their phone then all members will have to go through security together.  Be sure no one is parking the car, while their boarding passes are loaded on someone elses phone.

5. Spirit Airlines Baggage Fees: The Baggage fees can be the most complex, and the most costly.

How to avoid the spirit airlines baggage & carry on fees.

The only way to completely avoid the Spirit checked baggage and carry on fees is to only bring a ‘personal item.’ You will pay an additional fee for a carry on or a checked bag.

Many times checking a bag is unavoidable; however, if you understand the Spirit Airlines carry on & checked bag fee structure you can minimize your overall bag fees!

TWTL Tip: If you must book a bag, pay for it at the time of booking-you’ll get the best price.

A. The Personal Bag

The only ‘free’ bag on Spirit Airlines is the personal bag.  One personal item is included with each fare.  Spirit Airlines describes the personal bag as something like a purse, small backpack, or a laptop bag.

The Personal bag may  not exceed  18″x14″x8″ (including wheels and handles).

Diaper Bags: The only exception to a personal bag is if you have an infant or a toddler, you’re allowed to bring a diaper bag IN ADDITION to your personal bag-at no extra charge.

B. Carry-on Bag Fee

Carry on bags fees vary; however, they are typically between $35-$41; you are allowed to bring one carry-on per person.  If you can get all of your items into the carry-on bag then you’ll avoid having to pay for a checked bag.

TWTL Tip: The carry-on bag is more expensive than the first checked bag.  If you purchase one checked bag-no carry on bag- and pack the family’s clothes into the one checked bag, you’ll save a few bucks and have more space.

C. Checked Bag Guidelines: General

You are allowed up to 5 checked bags.  The fee schedule for checked bags varies depending on route; however, here is a general fee range for standard fares , and bags purchased during booking:

No matter what the baggage fee costs they’ll always be cheapest if you purchase the bags during booking.  If you are unsure of your baggage needs you can always purchase bags before or during online checking and they’ll still be cheaper than if you buy them at the airport (although slightly more expensive than purchasing bags during booking).

D. What does Spirit Charge for bags?

The answer is that it depends. Here is a case study on bag prices for a flight from Chicago to New York:

Chicago to New York: Base fare is  $45.38

New York to Chicago: Base fare is $79.18

Spirit Airlines has a handy feature that lets you check the bag prices for any existing booking, or prosepctive booking. Check out the Spirit Airlines Bag-O-Tron for exact prices for your route.

E. Bundle Packages: Another way to save money on all of these add ons is to ‘bundle’ them.

After you select your flights you are brought to the “Upgrade & Save Page.” Included in your Spirit Airlines base fare is (1) a random seat, and (2) a personal item.  If you know that you’ll want to add on items such as early boarding, seat selection, and a checked bag it’s worth doing the math to see if “boosting” or “bundling” these things would be cheaper than adding them on a la carte.

F. Overweight & Oversized Baggage Fees: The weight limit on checked bags is 40 lbs-anything over that and you’ll pay an additional fee.

If you have overweight bags consider your options.  It may be cheaper to pay the overweight baggage fee, or it could be the same price as paying for a second checked bag.  Price these out, and weigh your bags before departure to see which option is more economical.  Paying for a second bag will give you an additional 40 lbs to work with.

TWTL Tip: Spirit Airlines will not allow you to fly with a bag that is more than 80 linear inches in overall dimensions.

TWTL Tip: Spirit Airlines will not allow you to check any single bag that is more than 100 lbs.

TWTL Tip: There is no weight limit for personal items, carry ons, or the car seat bag!  Meaning you can throw extra items into the car seat bag, along with the car seat!

G. FAQ about Spirit Baggage

  • Purchased during Spirit.com booking: Anywhere from $25-$39 dollars.
  • After booking, but before arrival at the airport: Typically $35-$49 dollars.
  • At the airport: Typically $50-$60 dollars.
  • At the gate: $67
  • Purchased during Spirit.com booking: Anywhere from $30-$45 dollars.
  • After booking, but before arriving at the airport: Typically $40-$55 dollars.
  • At the airport: $55
  • What is the Spirit airlines carry-on size: Maximum of 22 x 18 x10  inches (including handles and wheels).
  • What size bag can you carry on Spirit Airlines for free? A personal bag. The Personal bag may  not exceed  18″x14″x8″ (including wheels and handles).
  • How big can a checked bag be on Spirit Airlines?  A checked bag cannot be more than 62 linear  inches (length + width + height=62’)  including handles and wheels. Any bag bigger than that is considered oversized/overweight and will incur an additional fee (see above chart).
  • What is the Spirit Airlines baggage weight limit? 40lbs for checked baggage (see chart above for pricing).
  • How do I avoid paying baggage fees on Spirit Airlines? Bring only a personal item. If that’s not feasible then purchase 1 checked bag at the time of booking.  Carry-ons are more expensive than checked bags, and buying after booking is going to cost you more than purchasing bags at the time of booking.
  • Do you get a free bag on Spirit?  You get a personal bag for free. Parents with small children can also bring on a diaper bag for free.
  • How do I add bags to my Spirit reservation? You can add bags at the time of booking.  Alternatively, you can go onto the website and purchase bags at any time before or during check in.  Last option is to purchase bags at the airport; however, this is the most costly option.
  • Are Spirit Airlines baggage fees refundable? This is the official Spirit Airlines policy on refundable fees, “All purchases of travel, hotel, car rental, leisure activities, booking fees, taxes, baggage fees, and seat fees are non-refundable.”

6. Snacks and Drinks

The cheapest way to save money here is to bring your own food and drink from home. Here is a list of snack ideas for the plane that you can prepare at home.

Snacks onboard Spirit Airlines cost between $1-$10, and drinks cost between $1-15.  You can ‘bundle’ food and drinks to get a bit of a discount.  Check out the description of food and drinks Spirit Airlines offers on board its flights. Here is a link to the À La Smarte™ Sips + Snacks , which includes photos of items offered.

7. In Flight Entertainment

Lastly, in flight entertainment. According to Spirit Airlines it has endeavored to have 97% of its routes enabled with Wi-Fi by 2021.  If you are lucky enough to get a wi-fi enabled plane you will be able to purchase Wi-Fi for $6.95 and use it to stream movies and shows from sites that you already have like Netflix and Hulu.

Additional Ways to Save Money on Spirit Airlines Fees

1. free spirit membership: .

This is the Spirit Airlines frequent flyer program, it works similarly to other frequent flyer programs, and you can redeem points for Spirit Airlines flights.

2. The Spirit Saver$ Club (Formerly the $9 Fare Club):

Joining the Spirit Saver$ Club will allow you to save money on fares, seats, bags, security shortcuts, boarding shortcuts, snacks, and more.  If you were a member of the $9 Fare Club then your membership automatically converted to the new program on January 21, 2021.

Here is the cost breakdown for the Membership:

TWTL Tip: Spirit Saver$ Club discounts can be applied to up to 8 people when booking a reservation.  Meaning that if one person buys the Membership then all people (up to 8) on that same booking can benefit from the membership.

3. Spirit Airlines World Mastercard

If you are approved for a Spirit Airlines World Mastercard you can earn up to 40,000 Bonus Points + A $100 companion flight voucher-if you make at least $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.

Flying Spirit Airlines with Kids

1. flying with a baby.

Flying Spirit Airlines with a baby or toddler is totally doable, and Spirit Airlines allows your growing family to take more trips, and spend less money on getting there.  For all the tips and tricks for flying Spirit with a baby or toddler check out-Flying Spirit Airlines with a Toddler: The Complete Review

2. Car Seat and Stroller Policy:

Strollers: You can check one stroller and one car seat per child, at no extra cost. You can regular check the stroller, or gate check the stroller.

Car Seats: If you have purchased a seat for your child you can bring the car seat onboard the airplane.  Alternatively, you can regular check or gate check the car seat.

To bring a carseat onboard it must be an FAA-approved car seat, and you should check to make sure the car seat will fit within the Spirit Airlines narrow seats.   Like all airlines there will be restrictions on which rows you can sit in with a car seat, and also where you can put your car seat within that row.  If you tick the box saying that you are bringing a car seat on board the system will automatically block out prohibited seats-which is really handy!

3. Will Spirit Airlines seat families together?

If you pre-pay for your seats- yes, of course.

If you do not pre-pay for your seats then the likelihood of your family being seated together by the Spirit agent is very likely.  However, it is not guaranteed.   Also, if you do not like your assigned seats and you try to switch seats on the plane-remember that you are contending with people who most likely selected and paid for their seat selection.

We don’t pay to pre-select seats; however, we understand (and accept) that there is a chance that we may not be seated together.

Don’t let Spirit Airlines fees disuade you from flying Spirit Airlines. With base fares so low, you are likely to save money even if you pay some of these fees. The trick to flying Spirit Airlines is to acknowledge that it is a budget airline, and to be intentional in how you use Spirit Airlines. With an open mind, patience, and managing your expectations you can make Spirit Airlines work for you- so that you have more money where it counts-on vacation!

Hi, I want to travel by Spirit Airlines and would like to avoid ‘Passenger Usage Fee’ by booking from airport instead of online. My question is: Spirit offers discount codes online, would those discounts apply at the airport too?

That Passenger Usage Fee sounds totally barmy to me, how crazy that you pay so much more for NOT booking at an airport! For the rest, it’s similar to our European budget airlines, so people are really familiar these days on those added fees and how they can add up!

I’ve not traveled using Spirit before but they remind me a lot of RyanAir in Europe. Budget airlines can be amazing ways to escape for a short time on the cheap, but the fees often do surprise people when not prepared. This is a great guide to helping flyers navigate the nuances of Spirit! I don’t think I would’ve figured out an “easy” workaround to the Passenger Usage Fee, so the shout out there was great.

I appreciate these practical ways to navigate all the hidden fees and upcharges on Spirit. However, I find it soooooo annoying when airlines do this, that I’ve largely opted to simply not fly Spirit or Frontier and just stick with my beloved Southwest (especially since my daughter has a companion pass).

Great post! I had thought about writing one, but this is very detailed! I use Spirit upon occasion and have good luck avoiding fees. Thank you! These are some additional good tips.

Spirit is now in a business of cheating people. For the sake of saving their own taxes, they offered ticket booking at the counter, and now they have restricted it to 3 hours only at DFW airport. Wonder if FAA knows about and and governs it. This clearly wasn’t in the allowed norms .

Great article! I like how you broke down all traps, pitfalls and perils of Welfare Airlines fee policies. The delays and late departures and arrivals are real. When this happens they (Welfare Airlines) likes to give vouchers that are hard to utilize. They have so many flight code tiers that make it very arduous to take full advantage of. Can you break this down too please with your keen attention to detail?

Spirit Airlines is one of several U.S. ultra-low-cost carriers, but with a restrictive fare model and no-frills planes, it’s not necessarily for everyone.

There are many complexities and restrictions that many travelers aren’t aware of when booking Spirit tickets, since its tickets only include the bare bones. So we’re here to look in depth at some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to flying Spirit Airlines. These include:

  • How the airline operates
  • How the ticketing process works
  • Ticketing restrictions
  • Ticketing fees and how to avoid them
  • Seating options

Let’s dive right in.

1. What Is Spirit Airlines, and What Is Its Basic Business Model?

Spirit is an American ultra-low-cost airline that operates flights in the U.S., the Caribbean, Latin America, and South America.

The airline is headquartered in Miramar, Florida, with hubs in Atlanta (ATL), Atlantic City (ACY), Chicago (ORD), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Houston (IAH), Las Vegas (LAS), Miami (MIA), and Orlando (MCO).

It has a fleet size of about 200 aircraft that fly to more than 80 destinations worldwide, primarily within North America. The company slogan is “Less Money. More Go.”

As of 2023, Spirit Airlines has the following aircraft:

  • Airbus A319-100
  • Airbus A319neo (on order)
  • Airbus A320-200
  • Airbus A320neo
  • Airbus A321-200
  • Airbus A321neo (on order)

2. Why Is Spirit Airlines Considered Ultra-Low-Cost?

Spirit Airlines offers great deals and incredibly low-priced air tickets to its customers — there’s no secret about that. The base fare can be as low as $29 , sometimes even lower.

How does can it afford to sell fares for so low? In March 2007, Spirit changed its fare model by removing amenities (which inflate the base ticket price on other carriers). Spirit charges a low base fare, and customers must pay for carry-ons, drinks, food, seats with additional legroom, and baggage. The more amenities included, the more a ticket costs.

So, to capture its market, Spirit reduces the cost of a ticket and lets passengers buy all ancillary items, like seat selection or checked luggage , separately. This enables the carrier to earn extra revenue while posting fares much lower than traditional legacy carriers.

3. Do I Have to Purchase a Seat on Spirit Airlines?

You must purchase a ticket to fly on any of Spirit’s flights. The base fare is usually between $29 to $39 for cheaper tickets, though it could cost less or much more. Seats are assigned randomly at check-in — specific seat selection is not included in your ticket price unless you pay extra for it in advance.

That means there’s no guarantee that you’ll get to sit with family and friends unless you pay to choose seats. So if you are traveling with companions, take your time to read the Spirit Airlines policies, and purchase seats ahead of travel.

Bottom Line: Seat selection isn’t included with your ticket on Spirit, so you’ll need to pay more if you want to choose where to sit.

4. Can I Purchase a Seat Assignment While I Book My Ticket?

Yes, though Spirit considers this an á la carte option. To choose a seat you want, you have to pay for seat assignment, starting at $5.

You can also pick what’s known as a Big Front Seat, which is essentially a first-class-style seat, though with fewer perks. This upgrade starts at around $40. A Big Front Seat has 32% more legroom and no middle seat — prime real estate!

To view the seat prices for a specific flight, check the Seat page when booking online. You can also look under My Trips or the Online Check-in page within 24 hours of departure.

5. How Can I Book My Flight and Get My Boarding Pass?

Visit spirit.com for the quickest way to book your flight and get your boarding pass for free.

Start by signing in with your credentials. If you do not have an account, create one (it’s called a Free Spirit account). This only takes a few minutes; you can log in and print your pass at home.

Once you have created an account and signed in, select the Book tab. The page will display the following options:

  • Round-trip, one-way, or multi-city
  • Departure and return location
  • Departure and return dates
  • Number of adults and children

After you add the required details, click Search Flights.  You’ll see results on the page, where you can book your flight. If you have a promo code, the website lets you to enter it at checkout.

Once you finish the process, you can print your boarding pass. This is also a good time to buy a seat assignment, since these options are less expensive online than in person at the airport.

6. Can I Print My Boarding Pass at the Airport?

Yes, Spirit Airlines has simple self-service kiosks where you can purchase tickets and print boarding passes in minutes. (If you need assistance, there are customer service agents nearby.) You should complete your check-in or purchase of tickets at least 1 hour before departure .

Boarding passes are available at the check-in counter, but customers will be charged $10 to print a single boarding pass. So if you want to save, print your boarding pass at home.

Bottom Line: When it comes to Spirit bookings or boarding passes, avoid talking to a human if you don’t want to pay extra! At the airport, there are significant fees even to do simple tasks.

7. Who Can’t Check in Online To Fly With Spirit?

Here is a list of travelers who may not be able to complete check-in online:

  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Travelers with a lap infant
  • Travelers with a military ID and no passport
  • Non-U.S. citizens traveling from outside the U.S.
  • Travelers who have purchased special items or extra seats
  • Travelers who have made a group reservation of 10 or more
  • Travelers with pets or service animals

These guests are required to check in at the airport counter. Unlike others who will be charged $10 when printing boarding passes at the airport, the guests listed above will have the $10 fee waived .

8. Can I Travel With an Infant on My Lap?

Yes, you are allowed to travel with an infant on your lap. Before departure, you should check in with Spirit staff . Spirit Airlines provides the following guidelines when it comes to traveling with an infant:

  • Adult travelers (ages 15 and up) can carry 1 child per lap
  • Infants under 7 days old or requiring life support systems like an incubator are not allowed to board (as is the case with most airlines)
  • Car seats are not allowed in the emergency exit rows or any row close to the emergency exit
  • Child car seats and lap children are not allowed to occupy seats with inflatable seatbelts
  • You can add a lap child when booking online

Fees and taxes are applicable when an infant accompanies you . The amount charged depends on the destination.

9. Can Unaccompanied Minors Travel on Spirit Airlines?

Unaccompanied minors can travel alone, but only on domestic direct flights (within the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico). They cannot travel unaccompanied on international flights , domestic flights where an aircraft change is scheduled, or connecting flights.

During flights, unaccompanied minors are taken care of by the airline staff. They will be offered snacks and beverages for a fee, just like any passenger. Unlike most legacy carriers, Spirit will not help children with gate transfers in connecting cities .

Here are the guidelines guests should follow when booking flights for unaccompanied minors:

  • Inform Spirit Airlines staff that you are booking an unaccompanied minor
  • Check in at the gate together with the minor at least 1 hour before departure
  • Request a gate pass when dropping off the child (available at the reservation counter)
  • Guests must accompany the child to the gate and remain within the gate area until the flight takes off (about 15 minutes after boarding)
  • Unaccompanied minors will be released to the person indicated on the unaccompanied minor form or to a Spirit Airlines employee

10. Can I Cancel or Change My Flight Reservation?

Yes, but you will be charged a fee if it’s too close to the flight date. Here are the current cancellation and change charges:

Customers who purchase Flight Flex can change their ticket for free up to 24 hours before departure.

Spirit Airlines allows changes or cancellation requests to be made up to 1 hour before departure. If you cancel your reservation 0 to 60 days before departure, any remaining balance is issued as credit. If you cancel via Spirit’s Airlines online portal, you will be issued a $10 voucher (one-way) applicable on future travels, provided the reservation charge is less than the cancellation fee.

To make changes or cancel yourself, sign in to your account and click My Trips . If you prefer not to do it yourself, you can text 48763 or 855-728-3555 on WhatsApp, direct message Spirit on social media, call 855-728-3555, or speak to a Spirit agent at the airport. You can also visit the reservations desk, but may be charged for this service.

You can learn more about canceling in this post: How To Cancel a Spirit Airlines Flight [Points or Cash Ticket] .

Bottom Line: Canceling or changing a ticket can cost you (at least $39 if you do it online).

11. Can I Change My Name on a Spirit Reservation?

Yes, you’re allowed to change a name that’s misspelled by a few characters. Doing so is free of charge. To change your misspelled name, contact Spirit Airlines’ customer support team.

You can also request a change of your legal name, though you must provide reasons for the change and supporting documents (like a divorce decree, marriage license, or court order). You can request a name change online. Visit spirit.com/help — at the bottom, you should find an option to attach your documents.

If you need to change your contact information, date of birth, passport number, or gender, contact the Spirit’s reservations center or email the customer support team. Remember to have copies of your legal documents.

12. Can I Travel With My Mobility Aid or Wheelchair on Spirit?

Yes, Spirit Airlines accepts mobility aids and wheelchairs for travelers. You can carry these devices onto your flight at no charge . To check your mobility aid or wheelchair, visit the ticket or gate counter.

If you’re traveling with a battery-powered mobility aid or wheelchair, we recommend arriving at the airport 2 hours before departure to ensure it’s handled properly. Officials at the ticket counter will recommend that you carry any detachable items like footrests or seat cushions on board yourself. If this is not an option, they may be stowed in the cargo bin.

To make your check-in process fast and smooth, Spirit requests that guests provide the airport crew with written instructions on handling the wheelchair or mobility aid and recommends bringing your user manual. You can also fill in a mobility aid information form .

13. What Are Spirit’s Baggage Fees?

Spirit Airlines allows travelers to check in with 1 personal item the size of a small box (such as a small backpack, handbag, or purse). These items are included in your base fare, so you will not be charged extra. However, Spirit will charge for extra baggage and some personal items.

If you plan on carrying extra luggage, check in online before departure ! The charge for your extra items will be lower if you add them when booking your flight than if you wait and do it at the airport. Fees for carry-on bags start at $31.

Hot Tip: Prepay your bags when you purchase your trip to reduce expenses incurred at the airport.

Personal items allowed by Spirit’s airport crew at no charge include cameras, assistive devices, umbrellas, coats, wraps, hats, and books. Head and neck pillows are allowed, but they must fit inside your backpack or bag.

There’s a common misconception that true low-cost carriers such as Spirit don’t allow small personal items on board — which is why we’re so thorough in mentioning everything you can and cannot bring with you.

Bottom Line: If you’re carrying on a bag (non-personal item), you could pay north of $50.

14. Where Can I Check the Size and Weight Limits for Bags?

Spirit Airlines allows personal items or backpacks under 18 x 14 x 8 inches, including wheels and handles.

The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 22 x 18 x 10 inches. If your carry-on is too big to be stowed safely in the cargo bin, you must check it (and pay extra).

For checked bags, it’s a maximum of 62 total linear inches (the sum of the height, width, and depth, in inches) and 40 pounds. Bags weighing over 40 pounds are charged more because they require special handling, and extra weight means the plane has to use more fuel during flight. Bags over 100 pounds cannot be accepted.

Certain regions, such as South America, have additional baggage restrictions, so be sure to check the Spirit website before you go to the airport.

Hot Tip: If you’re planning to travel with a checked or carry-on bag, make sure to check it online! Doing so at the airport will cost more.

15. Can I Carry My Personal Dialysis Machine, Insulin Device, or Other Medical Devices on Board?

Yes, Spirit Airlines allows you to carry a portable dialysis machine on board at no extra cost, and it doesn’t count toward your baggage allowance. Your device should not exceed 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches.

Although Spirit allows you to carry on these medical devices, it prohibits using the machine during the flight. The planes do not have compatible electrical plugs to charge or power medical devices.

Passengers are welcome to carry insulin on board, but it’s recommended that guests inform airline staff about the insulin before boarding. Insulin is normally stored in special bags aboard the flight for safekeeping.

Like other medical devices, insulin will not incur a fee during check-in. However, if your insulin is in a bag together with other personal items (like socks, electronics, and clothing), you might owe a fee for the other personal items if the weight exceeds the recommended limit.

For more information about traveling with insulin and other medical assistive devices, check the TSA website .

16. Can I Carry My Sports Equipment on Board?

It depends. You can carry some sports equipment on your flight. All checked sports equipment, such as hockey sticks, tennis racquets, and others, are charged just like a standard checked bag and stored in the hold. The sports equipment should be secured inside a bag. Spirit will charge you for a separate bag if they are not packed securely in the bag.

Spirit Airlines only permits non-battery-operated and non-motorized skateboards. Electric or battery-operated skateboards and other sports equipment cannot be checked (batteries can contain hazardous materials that can endanger other travelers and the plane).

Sports items not within the normal carry-on dimensions will be checked in the hold, and you will be charged a checked baggage fee .

17. Can I Fly With a Musical Instrument?

Musical instruments such as ukuleles, violins, guitars, cellos, accordions, saxophones, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and bass guitars are considered fragile. To prevent damage, pack your musical instruments in a case.

Instruments are charged like any other checked bag, meaning you’ll have to pay the checked bag price and any overweight charges. You must also sign a release form before departure that relieves Spirit of liability for damage or loss of the musical instrument.

18. What Is the Spirit Saver$ Club? How Do I Join, and What Are the Benefits?

Distinct from the Free Spirit program, Spirit has a program called the Spirit Saver$ Club (formerly known as the $9 Fare Club). This club offers benefits, including discounted fares, baggage fees, seats, and time-saving options for a fee of $69.95 for 12 months, $99.90 for 18 months, or $129.90 for 24 months. You could offset the membership fee above in as little as 1 booking, so the savings are potentially significant!

19. What Is the Free Spirit Frequent Flyer Program?

Free Spirit is a free rewards program created by Spirit Airlines to reward its customers for flying Spirit on an ongoing basis. To join the program, you must fill out a membership form with the following details:

A welcome email with your account information is sent to your inbox if registration is successful. Alternatively, you can become a Free Spirit member when you book your first flight.

Benefits of the Free Spirit Program include:

  • Book and manage your reservations faster

You can book and manage your flight reservation using Spirit Airlines mobile app on Apple or Android. If you have questions about bookings and managing your reservations within the program, call Spirit Airlines at 801-401-2222.

20. How Can I Save by Booking a Spirit Ticket at the Airport?

Strangely enough, you can save upwards of $19 per ticket if you book at the airport . This is the opposite of most of Spirit’s policies, where speaking to someone at the airport incurs a fee.

Because airlines must pay a federal excise task on base fares, Spirit tries to avoid paying this tax by adding an $18.99 passenger usage fee to tickets booked over the phone or online. This fee is not a tax and is included in most online and phone booking scenarios. In this way, Spirit can increase what is essentially the fare of the ticket so it doesn’t incur the additional tax.

Because the fee is only applied to online or phone bookings, you can avoid this $18.99 charge by booking at the airport. When you arrive at the airport, speak to a customer service representative to get around paying this nuisance fee.

When you get to the counter, let them know your preferred travel dates and routing, and they’ll price out the itinerary for you, less the $18.99 fee. While this does save you money on your ticket cost, you need to weigh the cost of driving to the airport and getting this done, which could be more expensive than just paying the fee at home.

Bottom Line: It may sound counterintuitive, but booking a ticket at the airport can save you money.

There are many nuances to booking Spirit tickets, but with a little know-how, it’s easy to figure things out and save a few bucks. Spirit can save you a ton of money when you travel, and understanding its processes and policies will help you maximize the experience and not overpay.

Do You Have To Pay For Seats On Spirit?

Swati Jaiswal

When booking a flight, passengers have many considerations to make, including selecting their seats. While some airlines may include seat selection in the ticket price, Spirit Airlines operates differently. As a low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines charges for seat selection to keep its fares low. This policy may lead to confusion and questions for travellers: Do you have to pay for seats on Spirit?

In this article, we will explore the ins and outs of Spirit Airlines’ seat selection policies and help you make an informed decision about whether paying for seats is worth it for your next flight.

The answer is yes, if you want to select your own seat, you’ll need to pay for it. But don’t worry, Spirit also offers free seat assignments at check-in if you’re willing to take the chance and let them choose your seat.

When it comes to selecting a seat on Spirit Airlines, you have two options. You can either pay for your own seat or accept the free seat assignment at check-in.

If you decide to pay for a seat, you’ll need to do so during the booking process. The cost of the seat depends on its proximity to the front of the plane and other factors.

To make sure that you get a good deal when purchasing your seat, be sure to compare prices across different websites and airlines.

It’s also important to take into account any additional fees that may apply such as baggage fees or change fees.

Additionally, if you’re travelling with a group of people, you may want to consider purchasing ‘buddy passes’ which will allow you to select seats together.

If you choose to accept the free seat assignment at check-in, you won’t have any control over where you sit. Spirit Airlines randomly assigns seats and there’s no guarantee that you’ll get to sit with your friends or family.

Additionally, if the plane is full and there are no available seats, Spirit may be forced to bump passengers from the flight depending on how many people have checked in.

How Does Spirit Airlines Seating Work?

Photo by Forsaken Films on Unsplash

If you’re looking to get seated together with fellow travellers, your best bet would be to purchase the Spirit Airlines Seat Selector Service. With this option, you can choose your favourite seat in the aircraft and even switch seats anytime before the flight departure (fees may apply).

The fees start at US$5 and vary depending on the route and type of seat selected.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for extra legroom and comfort, you can purchase the ‘Big Front Seats’.

These seats provide 32% extra legroom and many other benefits such as priority boarding and a complimentary snack.

Prices range between US$20 and US$70, depending on the route. It’s important to note that the Big Front Seats are available only at the time of booking or after check-in.

Does Spirit Charge For Seats?

The cost of seat assignments varies depending on the route, time of year, and seat location. This means it can range from as little as $1 all the way up to $50. The exact cost depends on the specifics of your flight, such as where and when you’ll be flying.

If passengers choose not to pay for a seat assignment during their booking process, then they will still get a free seat assignment at check-in.

However, there is no guarantee that they will be seated next to their travel companions or in the seat of their choice.

Overall, it’s important to remember that Spirit Airlines does charge for seat assignments and you should factor this cost into your budget when booking your flight.

If you have any questions about specific fees for your route, it’s best to contact Spirit directly for more information.

Do Spirit Seat Prices Go Down?

The answer depends on a variety of factors that come into play when it comes to pricing seats on Spirit Airlines. Factors such as time of year, demand for the flight, and how far in advance the flight is booked can all affect seat prices .

In some cases, seat prices may go down closer to the flight date if there are still many unsold seats for the flight.

On the other hand, there is no guarantee that seat prices will go down. In fact, they may even increase as the flight date approaches and availability becomes limited.

This is why it’s always best to book your Spirit Airlines seat assignments in advance if you can.

It’s important to keep in mind that prices can change quickly, so it pays to monitor the price of your seat assignment regularly.

If you’re flexible with your travel plans, you might be able to snag a better deal on last-minute flights.

However, there is no guarantee that this will work in all cases, so it’s still wise to book early whenever possible.

Can You Change Seats On Spirit After Checking In?

Photo by JC Gellidon on Unsplash

The answer is yes, you can. If you are flying with Spirit Airlines and want to change your seat after checking in, it’s possible to do so. You can log in to your account online or contact the reservation department for assistance .

However, there may be additional fees involved in changing your seat assignment if you have already been assigned one at check-in. The fees vary depending on the type of flight and the time you are requesting a seat change.

Hence it is best to check with Spirit Airlines beforehand to ensure you understand all associated costs. It may also be beneficial to review their policies regarding seat changes before booking a ticket.

This way, you can make sure that any potential changes will be covered by the fare purchased as some fares may include free changes or upgrades while others do not.

Overall, it is possible to change seats on Spirit Airlines after checking in, but it may come with additional fees that you should be aware of before making the request.

Be sure to contact the airline or review their policies and fees prior to booking a ticket so you can be prepared for any potential changes.

When Does Spirit Assign Seats?

When flying with Spirit Airlines, you have the option to pay for a specific seat assignment when booking. However, if you choose not to pay for a seat assignment, Spirit Airlines will assign you a seat at check-in free of charge .

The seat assignment process for those who do not pay for their seat assignments is usually done automatically and based on availability; therefore, there is never any guarantee that passengers will be seated next to their travel companions or in their preferred seating locations.

It’s important to note that if you want to guarantee that you have the desired seat location when travelling with Spirit Airlines, it is best to purchase your choice of seating at the time of booking.

Spirit Airlines makes every effort possible to ensure everyone is comfortable on their flight, so understanding the seat assignment process is key to having a pleasant experience.

Knowing when Spirit Airlines assigns seats and how they assign them can help make your travel experience more convenient and enjoyable.

For further information regarding seat assignments, please contact a Spirit Airlines customer service representative for specific details.

They will be able to answer any questions you may have and provide additional assistance in arranging your seating arrangements.

When Does Spirit Airlines Charge Your Card?

Generally, Spirit Airlines will charge your card for the full amount due upon booking, including the cost of the flight, seat assignments (if selected), baggage fees, and any other services or fees that you choose to add to your reservation.

Keep in mind that if you make changes to your reservation, such as adding seats or bags to your itinerary, additional charges may be applied at the time of booking.

Likewise, if you cancel a flight after purchasing it but before it has departed, Spirit Airlines will assess applicable cancellation fees.

Refunds for cancelled flights are also subject to certain terms and conditions as outlined in Spirit Airlines’ fare rules.

If you need help understanding when Spirit Airlines will charge your card or have any questions about associated fees and charges, please contact the Spirit Airlines Customer Service team via phone or email.

They are available 24/7 to provide assistance with any questions you may have.

What Is Spirit Airlines Bag Fare?

Photo by Alexander Mils on Unsplash

These fares include one personal item, like a laptop bag or purse, that must measure no larger than 18 by 14 by 8 inches. Anything larger will incur additional charges. These fees vary based on the size and weight of your bag.

For instance, standard checked baggage can cost anywhere from $30-$60 if you pay online or at kiosks prior to airport check-in.

Paying at the airport adds an extra $10 per bag fee. Oversized bags may be charged additional fees depending on the date and route of your flight.

Hence, it’s important to check with Spirit for the most up-to-date info.

If you’re flying with a pet, there is an additional fee of $110 per kennel and route. Other items such as car seats and strollers are subject to fees as well.

To make sure you know your total cost before booking, consult Spirit Airlines’ Baggage Fees page for more detailed information about what charges may apply to your trip.

Here’s a simple table on Spirit Airlines bag fare:

Do You Have To Buy Seats On Spirit Airlines?

Yes, you have to buy seats on Spirit Airlines. Spirit does not offer complimentary seat assignments. Passengers are required to purchase a seat assignment during the booking process or at check-in. The cost of a seat assignment varies depending on the type of seat and the route being flown.

However, passengers can choose to save money by opting for the “Bare Fare” option, which includes only a seat on the plane and one personal item.

Any additional services, such as seat selection, carry-on bags, or checked bags, will require an additional fee.

Does Spirit Airlines Charge For Seats?

Yes, Spirit Airlines charges for seats. The airline offers a “bare fare” pricing model, which means that the base fare only includes the cost of the flight and does not include any extras like seat assignments, checked bags, or in-flight meals.

Passengers can choose to add on these extras for an additional fee, including selecting their seats. The cost of a seat assignment varies depending on the route and the seat type, with some seats costing more than others.

Passengers can choose to purchase a seat assignment during the booking process or at any time before their flight through the airline’s website or call centre.

How Much Do You Pay For Seats On Spirit?

The cost of seats on Spirit Airlines varies depending on a variety of factors including the destination, time of year, and how far in advance the tickets are purchased. Spirit Airlines is known for its low-cost fares, but passengers should be aware that there are many additional fees .

The additional fees basically charged for seat selection, checked baggage, and even printing boarding passes at the airport.

It is recommended that passengers carefully review all fees and charges before booking a flight on Spirit Airlines to avoid any surprises.

Can You Select Seats On Spirit After Booking?

The answer is yes, you can select seats on Spirit after booking. However, you may have to pay an additional fee to choose your seat. Spirit Airlines offers two options for seat selection: Standard Seat Selection and Big Front Seat Selection .

Standard Seat Selection allows you to choose any available seat on the plane, while Big Front Seat Selection gives you access to the larger, more comfortable seats at the front of the plane.

You can select your seats during the booking process or after booking by logging into your account on the Spirit Airlines website.

Keep in mind that seat availability may be limited, especially if you are booking close to the date of your flight.

Does Spirit Allow 1 Free Bag?

It depends on the type of ticket purchased and the destination. Spirit Airlines typically charges for checked bags, but they do allow one personal item (such as a purse or small backpack) for free as long as it fits under the seat in front of you .

If you need to bring a carry-on bag or checked bag, you will need to pay an additional fee. However, Spirit does offer various options for reducing baggage fees, such as purchasing bags in advance or signing up for the $9 Fare Club.

It is important to check the specific baggage policy for your flight and purchase any necessary baggage options in advance to avoid additional fees at the airport.

Can You Bring Your Own Food And Drink On Spirit Airlines?

Yes, passengers are allowed to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks on Spirit Airlines flights. However, it is important to note that Spirit Airlines charges for all in-flight food and beverages, so bringing your own snacks and drinks can help save money during the flight.

Passengers should also make sure to adhere to TSA regulations regarding liquids and gels when bringing their own drinks on board .

It is also important to note that some types of food, such as strong-smelling or messy items, may not be allowed on the flight out of consideration for other passengers and the cleanliness of the aircraft.

In conclusion, Spirit Airlines offers different options for selecting seats, including standard seats and upgraded seats with additional legroom. While some airlines may include seat selection in the ticket price, Spirit Airlines charges for seat selection to keep its fares low.

Passengers can choose to pay for a seat assignment during the booking process or opt to have a seat assigned for free at check-in.

However, Spirit may assign seats randomly or separate passengers who do not pay for seat selection.

Ultimately, the decision to pay for seats on Spirit depends on the individual’s preferences and priorities when flying.

Is the Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat worth it?

Summer Hull

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

The term ' Spirit Airlines ' evokes lots of emotions, especially in light of some of the airline's recent operational challenges . But, while that was a pretty terrible run of events for the airline and its passengers, during times of normal operations, Spirit can be an affordable and underrated way to get across the country (and beyond).

Flying Spirit can be a solid choice even if you decide to sit in the admittedly cramped economy seats. But, Spirit also has bigger seats at the front of the plane that it calls Big Front Seats. And if you book these Spirit seats, you can fly in what is essentially a domestic first-class seat for at least 50% off the regular cost on most traditional airlines.

Spirit's Big Front Seats are in the first couple of rows of each aircraft. And if you've never flown in them, you may be surprised by the experience -- in a good way . They are essentially the same as other domestic first-class seats available on most U.S. airlines but are usually available for a much lower price.

What are Spirit Airlines Big Front Seats?

On Spirit Airlines, every advance seat assignment costs extra whether you pick the last row or the first row. The difference, of course, is how much the various seat assignments cost. Unquestionably, Big Front Seats cost several times more than any other seat on the Spirit aircraft.

Spirit's Big Front Seats are covered in leather, have 36 inches of pitch and are 18.5 inches wide. This means you have an additional six inches of legroom beyond Spirit's standard seats and they are two across per side of the aisle instead of three with the regular seats.

As with all Spirit's seats, Big Front Seats come "pre-reclined." So, you can't change the recline on a Big Front Seat.

To put this another way, on Spirit, you can have this:

Or, you can have this:

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

I've flown in both types of seats with Spirit — multiple times.

Historically, the easy advice to give is that, yes, Spirit's Big Front Seats are absolutely worth it. But, since that's just too easy of an answer (and prices seem to have recently increased), I'll be slightly more nuanced.

When are Spirit's Big Front Seats worth it?

If the flight is short (less than two to three hours), you are on the smaller side and every dollar counts, skip Spirit's Big Front Seats if you can't justify the cost.

For a family of four, even a $60 Big Front Seat upgrade would result in $480 of additional charges, based on round-trip travel. This is not a small amount, especially if you're traveling on a budget .

Spirit's Big Front Seats don't get you any included bags, snacks or other perks besides the larger seat. So keeping that cash safely tucked in your wallet can sometimes make sense. After all, you're probably flying Spirit because it's cheap, not because it's luxurious or comfortable.

But on the other hand, if you can fly in a nice, big seat for far less than the cost of an economy ticket on another airline, it's worth considering.

I've found that when you fly in the Big Front Seats, you are often with small business owners and relatively frequent flyers who largely put on their headphones and sleep or work (since the trays are actually large enough up there for a laptop). In that way, it ends up feeling a lot like every other airline.

It can also make sense to book the Big Front Seats if you want more space. My husband is a taller guy and while he doesn't get especially excited about flying Spirit, he will agree to it if -- and only if -- we book the Big Front Seats. On our recent flight home to Houston from Las Vegas, Spirit had a good departure time and a much lower price than United, even when factoring in the additional $68 fee per seat Big Front Seat assignment. So we booked Big Front Seats and didn't look back.

How much does the Big Front Seat cost?

The price of a Big Front Seat upgrade varies based on your flight and if you have elite status. I've seen the price for a Big Front Seat cost a little bit less for those logged in with Gold elite status, but only by a few dollars.

While you can see the number of available Big Front Seats when pricing out Spirit flights, you don't see the actual upgrade price until much further in the booking process. I've seen these upgrades start at around $20 per person on shorter flights in the past. But currently, the lowest prices I'm seeing are in the $40 to $60 range.

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

In test searches done for updating this article, the cost to select a Big Front Seat is currently much higher than it used to be.

In fact, on many of the routes I tested, Big Front Seats now cost $100 or more per flight. However, I rarely found routes higher than $100 even just a few weeks ago. In my recent tests, I found a handful of shorter routes (such as Los Angeles to Las Vegas) priced at under $100 for the Big Front Seats. But on average, the prices were twice what I used to see and can frequently be in the $100 to $140 range.

how much does spirit airlines charge for seat assignments

Here's a current real-life example.

A month from now, Spirit Airlines wants $54 to fly in a standard seat without a specific advance seat assignment from Houston to Las Vegas on a Saturday night. Going for an assigned Big Front Seat adds $135, for a total of $189 for a pretty comfy nonstop ride to Vegas.

United wants $242 for the same route at about the same time on a basic economy fare that also wouldn't come with an advance seat assignment. A regular economy ticket with a seat assignment on United costs $281. United's domestic first-class seat, which is basically the same as Spirit's Big Front Seat, rings in on that flight at $510 — over 2.5 times the cost of Spirit's similarly sized seat.

Related: Style vs. savings: Comparing JetBlue's Mint Studio and Spirit's Big Front Seat

That's a pretty good example that even with higher prices for the Big Front Seat than I'm used to, it's still possible to save real money over the traditional air carriers' cheapest economy tickets while still sitting in a much larger Spirit Big Front Seat. Of course, there are other trade-offs to factor into the equation when deciding to fly Spirit . But on a seat-to-seat comparison, Spirit's Big Front Seats are often one of the best values in the sky for those looking for a little more than just the cheapest available seat.

It's also worth noting that in Spirit's new frequent flyer program , you now earn 12 to 20 points per dollar (depending on your status level) for ancillary charges such as Big Front Seat assignments. TPG values Spirit points at 1.1 cents each, which means that you'll essentially earn a 13 to 22% return in Spirit points on any money you spend to reserve Big Front Seats.

We've also experienced Big Front Seat purchases counting towards cards' annual travel and airline fee credits with cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required). If you have a card like that in your wallet, that's a way to potentially enjoy some extra space when flying with Spirit without spending as much out of pocket for the 'upgrade.'

Bottom line

You may not always need a larger seat to get where you're going with Spirit. Sometimes, the cheapest available ticket is the best one for the situation. However, if your budget can accommodate the added cost of a Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat, your back — and perhaps your mood — will probably thank you for the extra investment in the journey.

If I'm flying with my two kids, it sometimes makes more sense for us to sit three across in less expensive seats than spend several hundred dollars more on the Big Front Seats. But on the flip side, if I'm flying by myself or just with my husband, who really appreciates the extra space, then paying for Big Front Seats can make sense.

Airline seat selection fees should be banned. Until then, here's how to avoid them

Airline seat selection fees are one of the most hated surcharges in the travel industry – and they should be illegal.

It costs an airline nothing to reserve your seat. Yet passengers shell out anywhere from $25 to more than $100 for a confirmed seat assignment or to sit next to their friends and family.

If the Fair Fees Act proposed by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., passes, then seat selection fees would fly away. The law prohibits airlines from imposing fees that are not reasonable and proportional to the costs it incurs.

But airlines really went too far when they began charging families with young children for seat assignments, sometimes even suggesting parents could be separated from their kids if they didn't pay. Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation threatened to create a new regulation to allow families to sit together on flights .

Check out  Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

"Airlines can’t just treat a child like a piece of baggage," President Joe Biden said in a recent press conference announcing airline policy changes .

But these proposals will not help you this summer. And even if they did, they would exclude some passengers, including travelers with older kids who might still need to sit near an adult, passengers with special needs, honeymooning couples, BFFs, and … the list goes on.

How do they avoid paying more for adjacent seats? And are there any new ways of avoiding seat selection fees?

Don't do it: No, you shouldn't recline your seat on planes. Here's why.

Should babies, smelly passengers be on a no-fly list? Dealing with difficult air travelers

What is an airline seat selection fee?

A seat selection fee allows you to reserve a seat in your class of service. Each airline ticket comes with a confirmed seat, but if you want to choose your seat location, most domestic airlines will charge an additional fee.

These extras are not new. Airlines started to experiment with seat selection fees in 2008, and they caught on a decade later. What is new is that the fees are rising, sometimes increasing the cost of a ticket by hundreds of dollars. Last year, U.S. airlines collected $4.2 billion in seat assignment fees .

How do you avoid a seat selection fee?

If you're traveling with a group, the best way to avoid a seat selection fee is to book your seats at the same time. If the airline is assigning seats for you, it typically seats people under the same record locator number together. With added government pressure on the airlines, it's unlikely they will intentionally separate a family – and if they accidentally do, they will find a way of undoing it.

Seat selection fees are a mind game. If you're booking your flights online, you'll face pop-ups and screens that try to convince you that you need to pay more to upgrade your travel experience. Just say "no." Within 24 hours of your departure, the airline will assign you a seat. Pro tip: If you want to avoid paying for a seat assignment, arrive at the airport early. That way, you'll have the pick of the unassigned seats.

New strategies for sitting together on a flight

There are some lesser-known travel hacks that will let you find a seat together.

◾ Find two seats together : ExpertFlyer , a subscription service for frequent fliers, has a service called Seat Alerts with an "Any Two Seats Together" option that monitors airline seat maps and can tell you if two seats together become available.

"If you need more seats, you can also create a seat alert for specific seats around the seats you already have assigned in case one of them opens up," said Chris Lopinto, founder of ExpertFlyer. Then you can claim both seats, but you may have to pay extra.

◾ Be last to board : Here's another tip I've heard from several travelers, but it only works if the flight isn't full and you don't have a lot of carry-on luggage. First, find out if it's a full flight by looking at the seat map online or asking a gate agent. Then wait until the last person has boarded and look for two empty seats in your class of service.

◾ Ask another passenger to switch : Asking a passenger to swap seats so your traveling companion can sit next to you can be problematic because many passengers have paid extra for their seats. Kate Zuckerman, CEO of Thrive Family Travel, which provides travel coaching services for families, said there's a right way to trade seats.

"Try to offer them something of value, such as a coveted aisle placement instead of a mediocre middle seat, or a seat closer to the front of the plane," she says.

Other travelers have offered gifts, snacks, or even cash. Zuckerman said she usually finds someone who will volunteer to give up their seat. And she pays it forward. When she travels solo, she's always the first to trade seats with someone who wants to sit next to a friend or family member.

Refunds: Why are travel refunds taking so long now? Here are some tips to get your money back.

Passports: Waited too long to get a passport? Here's what to do.

Should you ask a gate agent for a better seat?

Asking a gate agent for a seat next to your sweetheart may be a waste of time. Karen Villano, a gate agent for a major airline, said airlines always pressure the airport staff to collect money in exchange for a better seat, even if it's just a window seat or emergency exit row in economy class.

"If I change your seat to a paid seat without collecting money, the company is alerted," she said. "It goes on my permanent record of not complying with company policy."

Villano says airlines will waive their collect-money-at-all-costs rule for any family with a young child. But anyone else will have to pay for a better seat. The real opportunities to switch come after you've boarded the flight.

Wait, do you really have to sit together?

Airlines have been cashing in on passengers' desire to sit together for years. But before you try to beg a gate agent for a seat next to your companion or bribe a fellow passenger to swap seats, ask yourself: Do we really need to sit together?

If the answer is yes, chances are the crew will find a way to make it happen. A single mom with twins. Grandpa, who has dementia, flying with a caretaker. As eager as airlines are to collect more seat fees from you, they will not allow passengers in situations like this to be separated.

For the rest of us, the answer might be "no." If you're on vacation, you'll spend a lot of time together once you arrive. If you're traveling with your spouse, you might need the break. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a little alone time to enjoy your flight.

What if? What if summer travel isn't as hectic as expected? Why last-minute plans could work out.

The days of charging seat selection fees are numbered

Airline seat selection fees represent everything that is wrong with the airline industry. Airlines took away your ability to reserve a seat next to a family member or loved one and then started charging you extra for it. It costs airlines nothing to reserve a seat, but now they're making billions a year from it.

When passengers try to book seats together this summer, they'll see seat assignment fees for what they are – pure airline greed. And now, finally, the government is going to put an end to these unconscionable surcharges.

What is the Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat?

Does spirit have first class, what’s the difference between the spirit big front seat vs. exit row seats, how much is spirit’s big front seat, how to book the spirit big front seat, is the spirit big front seat worth it.

Anyone who’s ever flown on Spirit Airlines knows the unique challenges of traveling with the ultra-budget airline: small seats that don’t recline, no carry-on included (just a personal item) and no free snacks or drinks. But for those willing to travel light, the airline’s rock-bottom prices can offer an exceedingly budget-friendly way to travel by air.

Thankfully, for those looking for a more comfortable Spirit experience, there’s an option to upgrade from standard economy class seating: the Big Front Seat.

But is the Spirit Big Front Seat really worth the upgrade? And does Spirit have first class? We discuss these questions and answer them below.

These seats located at the front of the plane are larger and more comfortable than economy class seats. They boast a 36-inch pitch (plus curved seatbacks to offer more room for your knees) and an 18.5-inch width, which means you can enjoy 6 more inches of legroom than a standard seat.

Maybe the biggest selling point is that there’s no middle seat in Big Front Seat rows, which means fewer people to crawl over (or to crawl over you) on long flights. This also means at least one armrest is guaranteed to be just for you, and the shared armrest in the middle is also wider.

There’s also an ergonomic memory foam headrest and extra memory foam in the seat cushion for enhanced comfort.

» Learn more: How to make a cheap Spirit Airlines ticket even cheaper

In short, no. The Big Front Seat is as close as you’ll get to Spirit airlines first class, and truthfully, it lacks many of the perks you normally find in first class cabins. Namely, physical separation from the economy class cabin, free food or drinks, early boarding or even free checked bags.

It’s quite literally just a bigger seat in the front of the plane. They don’t even recline (all Spirit seats are “pre-reclined”).

In “Spirit first class,” (aka the Big Front Seat), you can enjoy extra legroom, but only an inch more than in exit row seats, which cost less. On its own, this could hardly be considered an upgrade, in our opinion.

However, legroom isn’t the only thing to consider when choosing a seat. There’s seat width to contend with, too, and Big Front Seats are wider. Plus, exit rows are three seats across, meaning they’ll still feel more cramped.

» Learn more: What you need to know about Spirit Airlines fees

The Spirit Big Front Seat price depends on where you’re flying. Upgrades can cost between $12 and $250, according to Spirit’s website — an exceedingly wide spread. They can be reserved during or after booking.

In one flight search from Dallas to Atlanta, upgrading to the Spirit Big Front Seats would cost an additional $62 per direction of travel. In comparison, we were able to upgrade to a Boost It package during booking for $69.50. That option includes a checked bag, early boarding and the option to pick your own seat (including an exit row seat if available).

A shorter flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas resulted in a Big Front Seat upgrade fee of only $39 each way, but the Boost It bundle cost more at $75 one-way.

A flight from San Diego to New York-LaGuardia cost the same $75 for a Boost It bundle and $153 for the Big Front Seat.

So, sadly, the only way to know how much upgrading to these larger seats costs is to go through the booking process.

You can select to upgrade your ticket to the Big Front Seat when making your seat selections during checkout on eligible flights.

You might be wondering if you can use Free Spirit points for your upgrade. Sadly, you can’t use points to upgrade to a larger seat, Big Front Seat included. Miles can only be redeemed for the fare portion of your flight, so if you want the extra space, you’ll have to pay for it in cash.

On the upside, if you’re a Free Spirit member when you upgrade, you can earn 12 points for every dollar you spend on À La Smarte options, or 20 points if you’re an elite Gold member.

Frontier Airlines World Mastercard® holders are not charged the typical redemption fee of $15 to $75 for any award bookings made within 180 days of the date of travel.

This includes seat upgrades, meaning you can earn more miles than if you’d purchased a fare with a regular seat.

» Learn more: Your guide to elite status on Spirit Airlines

Whether upgrading to Spirit’s more spacious seats in the front of the plane is worth it, of course, will depend on who you ask. If you’re looking for a true first class experience, for example, you’re going to be disappointed with the services and amenities that come with the Big Front Seat (which is to say, none).

However, if all you want is a more comfortable travel experience on a long flight with a bit more legroom and elbow space, the Big Front Seat will definitely deliver. It’s more spacious, more comfortable and will likely cost far less than even business class flights on other, nonbudget airlines, meaning you can fly in style without blowing up your budget.
