The History of Environmental Protection

Humankind has always been concerned about the environment. The ancient Greeks were the first to develop environmental philosophy, and they were followed by other major civilizations such as India and China. In more recent times, the concern for the environment has increased because of growing awareness of the ecological crisis. The Club of Rome, a think tank, was among the first to warn the world about the dangers of overpopulation and pollution in its report "The Limits to Growth" (1972).

In the early days of environmentalism, people thought that the best way to protect nature was to set aside areas where humans would not disturb the environment. This approach, which is known as preservation, was given a major boost in the United States with the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916.

The modern environmental movement began in the 1960s when concerns about the negative impact of humans on the environment began to increase. In response to these concerns, governments around the world began to pass legislation to protect the environment. In the United States, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established in 1970.

The Principles of Environmental Protection

The natural surroundings that enable life to thrive, nurture, and destroy on our planet called earth are referred to as an environment. The natural environment is vital to the survival of life on Earth, allowing humans, animals, and other living things to thrive and evolve naturally. However, our ecosystem is being harmed as a result of certain wicked and selfish human actions. It is the most essential issue, and everyone should understand how to safeguard our environment and maintain the natural balance on this planet for life to continue to exist.

Nature provides an environment that nourishes life on the planet. The environment encompasses everything humans need to live, including water, air, sunshine, land, plants, animals, forests, and other natural resources. Our surroundings play a critical role in enabling the existence of healthy life on the planet. However, due to man-made technical advancements in the current period, our environment is deteriorating day by day. As a result, environmental contamination has risen to the top of our priority list.

Environmental pollution has a detrimental impact on our everyday lives in a variety of ways, including socially, physically, economically, emotionally, and cognitively. Contamination of the environment causes a variety of ailments that can last a person’s entire life. It is not a problem of a neighborhood or a city; it is a global issue that cannot be handled by a single person’s efforts. It has the potential to end life in a day if it is not appropriately handled. Every ordinary citizen should participate in the government’s environmental protection effort.

Between June 5 and June 16, World Environment Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the environment and to educate people about its importance. On this day, awareness initiatives are held in a variety of locations.

The environment is made up of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, insects, water bodies, fish, humans, trees, microbes, and many other things. Furthermore, they all contribute to the ecosystem.

The physical, social, and cultural environments are the three categories of environments. Besides, various scientists have defined different types and numbers of environments.

How to Protect the Environment Essay

Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment against various human activities that degrade, destroy, or otherwise reduce its quality for future generations. Environmental protection has become a widespread issue in recent decades as human pressures on the environment have increased exponentially.

There are many ways to protect the environment. One way to protect the environment is by recycling – a way to reduce the carbon footprint and conserve natural resources. It also decreases the amount of waste that goes into landfills, which causes less pollution to water bodies. Another way is to use eco-friendly products in your life. This can contribute to a healthier environment by reducing the number of harmful chemicals and toxins in the air, ground, and water.

To protect the environment, we should be conscious of what we consume and how we consume it. Many factors affect the quality of our air, water, and land, but it is best to start small by always considering its impact on the environment.

Afforestation and tree plantation help protect our environment by reducing global warming, soil erosion, etc. We can reduce our carbon footprint through carpooling instead of driving, which is cheaper and reduces our energy usage and emissions.

A Role of Human Beings in Protecting the Environment Essay

Introduction.

The presented case scenario indicates that redbeard_90 does not see anything wrong with the ongoing damage and destruction of the natural environment. This situation supports the argument that redbeard_90 is placing value on destruction as the correct path towards making the planet better for all human beings. For redbeard_90, a unique attitude is evident whereby people would be allowed to act freely through the power of the free use conception. Such an approach has the potential to encourage more individuals in different parts of the globe to overuse a wide range of natural resources. Redbeard_90 would guide people to utilize the environment without necessarily thinking about posterity and protection (Brusseau, 2012). This attitude would be informed by the notion that humans are engaging in actions intended to transform the planet and the natural environment in order to suit them.

The progress and domination argument remains a common approach many people opposed to environmental protection apply. Specifically, the notion guides individuals to avoid placing any intrinsic or necessary value in the environment. Those who pursue such an ideology would acknowledge that an autonomous worth is lacking in all animals, resources, plant, and water (Brusseau, 2012). This free-use argument is applied to guide communities to rely on the natural world to meet their needs and achieve their maximum potential.

The above form of argument appears to be in tandem with what redbeard_90 wrote on Yahoo! forum page. Specifically, the student seems not to care about the idea of saving the planet. The individual is convinced that humans should continue pursuing their goals and rely on the available resources to meet their demands (Meier et al., 2019). In such a way, redbeard_90 believes the proposed approach could guide and help humans to transform their surrounding environments to suit their demands. From this analysis, it is agreeable that redbeard_90 presents an observation that echoes the domination and progress argument whenever focusing on the planet.

The responses by Super Nova reveal that she believes strongly in environmental conservation since it has the potential to protect the planet. She understands that future generations would need it for survival and realization of their goals. Based on the statement, two unique values appear to be guiding her expectations and desire. First, the biosphere value could guide personal actions and ideas that are intended to take care and protect the natural environment (Meier et al., 2019). Second, the altruistic value guides people to take good care and support of other people. Based on these attributes, it is agreeable that Super Nova is concerned about the welfare of individuals who could be at risk of air pollution and the natural environment.

Super Nova is convinced that human beings have a role to protect and safeguard the integrity of the natural environment. This is the case since any attempt to pollute the planet contributes to respiratory problems and other health predicaments. By engaging in activities that are intended to save the planet, Super Nova believes strongly that most of the problems recorded today could be reduced significantly. The woman goes further to acknowledge that future generations could only survive and achieve their goals if those occupying the planet today safeguard their respective environments (Brusseau, 2012). The initiative would help address the problem of draughts, protect lakes, and ensure that more people have access to adequate food supplies.

The ideas by Super Nova reveal that she believes strongly that nature has an intrinsic value. Specifically, the natural environment needs to exist irrespective of human expectations or uses. This means that people should be keen to protect it and understand that it was not only meant for their use or benefits. Based on this understanding, it is agreeable that an ecocentric viewpoint emerges from her observation (Brusseau, 2012). Failure to uphold such a value means that more individuals or communities would be entitled to destroy the planet while pursuing their goals.

Luke presents an animated response intended to guide more people to change the current national mindset regarding the issue of environmental conservation. Based on the poster, it would be agreeable that Luke is among those who mix a little of protecting the planet and worrying about human welfare. The reasoning behind such an observation is that Luke is convinced that most of the measures people advocate for might not help the planet recover completely (Meier et al., 2019). However, planet Earth could not be prevented for using a little help. Additionally, Luke goes further to indicate that the efforts to develop cleaner energy and alternative fuels could work positively for him and others.

Some people interested in the welfare of the planet are either interested in helping nonhuman animals or the natural world in totality. From his words, it is agreeable that Luke is among those who are focusing on the integrity of the natural world. This is true since he begins by acknowledging that the planet could accept some help to ensure that it recovers from the industrial plunder experienced for hundreds of years. He goes further to indicate that people could support clean energy and protect the problematic challenge of global warming (Grossman, 2018). Lukeā€™s arguments and observations are, therefore, designed in such a way that they could help protect the natural environment.

The idea of environmental conservation could be pursued by limiting the process of industrialization or relying on industrial advances. After going through his statements, it is agreeable that Luke sounds more of a conservationist because he begins by advocating for a new mindset. He goes further to accept any form of advancement as long as it helps make the available air cleaner or reduces he price of oil. The process of developing cleaner ways of doing things call for advanced industrial activities (Grossman, 2018). These notions show conclusively that Luke is more of a conservationist than a protector.

From the presented poster, it is notable that scottsdalehigh64 does not place much value or concern for human existence. He believes that humans have been destructive over the years since they think they have a higher right in comparison with the other forms of life. He views all creatures as equal and expects people to respect and allow them to live peacefully without any form of disturbance (Brusseau, 2012). However, human activities have remained questionable and unacceptable. This happens to be the case since such actions are capable of leading human beings closer to extinction.

Based on poster, the reader acknowledges that scottsdalehigh64 places value on the integrity of the natural environment. The contributor cares for all living creatures and believes that they should be protected from human activities since they are destructive and unacceptable. From such an observation, he goes further to indicate that there is a need for all human beings to protect all other life forms found on the planet. He appears not to care about humans because they have remained entitled while their actions have affected all other life forms (Grossman, 2018). This understanding could explain why scottsdalehigh64 believes that there is a need to protect all other creatures so that they can survive comfortably should human beings become extinct.

Scottsdalehigh64 guides readers to identify and define what a good place to live in ought to be. Specifically, he appears to accept that all creatures are equal and should be supported to live and succeed in their habitats without interference. The passage goes further to indicate that human beings have remained entitled for centuries. This misbehavior allows them to oppress and destroy all other forms of life on the planet (Grossman, 2018). Scottsdalehigh64 goes further to encourage people to remain more concerned and make the planet livable, sustainable, and capable of supporting all life forms.

Scottsdalehigh64 offers a unique approach that could become the basis for an argument intended to protect the planet against all forms of destruction. By removing all life-forms that remain destructive to other living creatures, communities would become more aware and capable of avoiding all questionable activities. This kind of elimination emerging from the idea by scottsdalehigh64 could mean avoiding all initiatives that are destructive in nature, such as pollution, overutilization of natural resources, and deforestation. The best action plan would be to provide legal frameworks intended to inform human activities while taking conservation to the next level (McMahan, 2010). All countries across the globe should be involved if positive results are to be recorded. The problems experienced in the past due to human activities should be applied to justify this kind of initiative. This approach would encourage more people to be involved and eventually make the planet a better place for all.

Jeff McMahan relies on scottsdalehigh64ā€™s observation to propose a new strategy intended to replace carnivorous species with herbivorous ones. The move to get rid of meat-eating would mean that human beings would be valuing themselves while ignoring the plight of other creatures. This happens to be true since human beings are omnivorous and rely on meat as a common source of food. Similarly, they would be doing injustice to nonhuman animals that are carnivorous while damaging the integrity of the natural food chains. The idea would contribute to a unique problem whereby all plant eating animals would increase in numbers and eventually make the available natural resources inadequate for them (McMahan, 2010). This choice would eventually result in the extinction of both plant eaters and the available vegetation cover. These viewpoints explain why a renewed approach to the problems affecting the natural planet is recommendable. The ultimate aim should be to make the environment sustainable and capable of supporting both the current and future plant and animal species.

The global community is presently grappling with various challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and global warming. Analysts and scholars have presented numerous studied intended to shed more light about the causes and possible implications of these predicaments. The excited poster by KiRa01 appears to guide and encourage people and pursue their goals as if there was no tomorrow. From this statement, KiRa01believes in situation whereby individuals lead their lives without having any regard to consequences that might be encountered in the future (Ladouceur, 2019). Such an approach is frantic, reckless, and capable of disorienting the natural environment and eventually making it unavailable to future generations.

KiRa01 presents a negative attitude that should not be applied when focusing on the problematic issue of environmental degradation. However, the argument could be adopted and considered by applying ethical principles that has defined the field for years. Specifically, companies and governments have been observed to engage in actions that have been observed to affect the integrity of the natural environment. For example, industrialists pollute the environment in an effort to mass produce and market a wide range of products (Ladouceur, 2019). Similarly, governments tend to pursue projects that destabilize natural ecosystems in an effort to streamline transportation or promote economic activities. From an ethical perspective, people could live their lives as if there was no tomorrow and be able to put food on the table. If some ignore such an announcement by KiRa01, chances are high that other people would do the same thing in one way or the other.

Those who strive to protect the planet will be unable to achieve their goals since other people and companies have continued to disregard the integrity of the natural environment. If more people chose to follow this kind of advice, chances are high that government officials and policymakers could become more involved and ready to change the situation (Ladouceur, 2019). The advice could eventually become the real foundation for positive ethical approaches intended to protect the planet against any form of destruction and overuse of resources.

Many people confuse the environment and nature. The environment comprises everything around us including living and nonliving things. Our environment has provided us with everything including food, shelter, clothing, air, and other raw materials for millions of years. Nowadays things have changed and humans are rapidly destroying the environment. It’s the need of time that every one of us starts to stand up for our environment and play a role in protecting it from further damage. In this essay, I will discuss why and how we should take care of our environment including our atmosphere, animal life, and plant life.

My Role In Environment – 700 Word Long Essay

https://unsplash.com/photos/W3y2crFkVIs

We live in a world where people no longer care about their surroundings. People are not realizing that a  healthy environment is as important for survival as any other resource. We need to protect the environment to prevent several illnesses caused by air, water, and land pollution. We all have a role to play to protect the environment. As a college student, I feel I must make every effort to protect the environment by taking necessary actions. However, one person can not cause a considerable positive change in the environment. We as a community of young teenage college students should rise to this task. Instead of wasting time on unhealthy activities like playing video games, or partying the whole day, we should strive to protect our environment. In this essay, I will discuss why and how all of us should play our role in environmental protection.

Every one of us has destroyed the environment and all of us should make a combined effort to protect it. First, we need to realize that the environment has given us everything including food, water, and shelter along with clean air for breathing. We as human beings no longer respect our environment, modern humans take everything for granted and that has resulted in the rapid destruction of our surroundings. It’s time we give back to the environment by being cautious of our resources. All living and nonliving things around us are part of our environment. Being good towards the environment means being respectful and cautious towards all living and nonliving things alike.

One of the most important resources for survival is water. According to research , an average person wastes 30 gallons of water every day. Wasteful water practices are the main reason that animal and plant life around us is facing survival problems. Similarly, the natural environment is also being destroyed which is causing environmental degradation and global warming problems. Harmful gases that cause air pollution are resulting in environmental damage. Unauthorized excess hunting practices of aquatic animals, marine life, and land animals are the main reason that there are many endangered species of animals in our environment.

For us to save the environment and human health it is important that we take steps for environmental conservation. These steps include reduced energy consumption, preservation of natural surroundings, waste management, saving water, and recycling everything. We all know that trees play the most significant role in our surroundings. Trees use carbon dioxide to give us a fresh supply of oxygen. Other than that trees prevent soil erosion, provide fruit, wood, and, leaves that are used in making medicines. There is an urgent need to plant more trees to stop climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer. Ever since I became able to plant trees and small plants I have been actively planting them everywhere. My parents have motivated me to do so and I also encourage my friends to help me plant more trees.

https://www.pexels.com/photo/crop-unrecognizable-gardener-planting-green-plant-in-pot-7141192/

As a good citizen, I don’t waste vital resources like water, food, and minerals nor do I harm trees or other plant life. I love and respect nature, all animal species, marine life, and birdlife. I also make sure that every biodegradable thing that I use can undergo proper disposal to eliminate toxic substances from our surroundings. I also try to save energy by turning off lights to save electricity and turning off the water tap while brushing. During the day, I open the windows to use sunlight instead of turning on the lights.

Many people are aware of the importance of protecting the environment, but not everyone is willing to take any steps towards reducing air or water pollution caused by human activities. Saving the environment does not require a lot of effort, we can engage in simple activities as if planting trees in our backyard.  Trees are vital to improving our environment and everyone should at least plant 10 trees every month. Currently, I am also a member of the forest club in my community, through this platform I create awareness regarding the importance of trees.

In conclusion, it’s the responsibility of every person to protect and preserve the natural environment. If we don’t care about our environment then our future generations will never be able to live life to the fullest. These are the reasons why everyone should be mindful of our environment.

The Role Of Youth In Environmental Protection – 200 WordsShort Essay

https://www.pexels.com/photo/children-standing-at-the-seashore-while-holding-signages-9035233/

The relationship between mankind and the environment is as old as humanity itself. We have been good friends with our environment for millions of years. But now things have changed and humans have started to destroy the environment for the last 3 centuries. The main reason behind this problem is that humans don’t respect the environment anymore. Very few people nowadays care for environmental protection which is the main reason for many problems. In this short essay, I will discuss the role of youth in stopping environmental pollution.

Young people need to step up and start caring for the environment. They should spread awareness among people about how they can protect their environment. School and college students should run campaigns against the wastage of resources. Our environment has provided us with food, shelter, minerals, raw material, and air to breathe for all these years and this is the time we give some back.

If we fail to protect our environment, the weather condition will get worse, which will result in environmental degradation and global warming. If we continue like this all the natural resources we rely on will be depleted. For the entire human race to exist in the future we should start working now. Planting more trees is very important for us. All young people should plant more trees and encourage people not to waste vital resources like water and energy.

In conclusion, humans all over the world should care for all living beings around them. We all should be willing to sacrifice our own interests to conserve energy, save water bodies, and get rid of polluted air. This is the only way if humankind wants to survive on this planet earth.

Essay 1 (250 Words) – How to Protect the Environment

Introduction

It is very essential for our environment to stay clean and life-sustaining. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The environment we live in is being damaged by our own deeds. There is an urgent need to take proactive measures for environmental protection and involve the younger generation in it.

Steps for Environmental Protection

Below listed are some vital points to ensure that our environment stays out of harmā€™s way ā€“

  • Ban the use of plastic bags and products.
  • Ensure that your household waste is disposed through proper channel.
  • Stop littering and also encourage others to stop the same.
  • Donā€™t use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, rather go for organic ones.
  • Minimize vehicle use as exhaust gases are the greatest pollutants of air.
  • Save forests and plant trees because they are the lungs of the environment.
  • Minimize the use of groundwater or surface water.

Role of Students in Environment Protection

Students play a very significant role in environmental protection. They are sensitive, receptive, and take any advice, suggestion, generously. There are several schools that actively take participate in cleanliness campaigns.

Students are filled with energy and enthusiasm and their contribution to such campaigns is incomparable. Also, a student who understands the value of the environment will teach the same to younger and elders in his/her family.

It is very important that we keep our environment safe and free from pollution. Roping in young students for the same will work wonders for the cause.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – How to Improve Environmental Health

Everything that surrounds us is described as our environment. Going by this definition, our natural environment consists of ā€“ air, soil, water, forests, plants, hills, oceans, water bodies, etc. It is therefore in our own interest to protect the environment. In this essay, we will discuss on ways to improve the environment and the role of students in environmental protection.

How to Improve Environmental Health

There are many ways to improve the condition of the environment, but the most important ones are listed below ā€“

  • Recycle and Reuse

A lot of waste that pollutes the environment consists of dumped household materials that are no longer in use, like – plastic and glass bottles, tin cans, broken computers, or other plastic items, clothes, etc. These waste materials reach the soil and water and could stay there for years, polluting them and reducing their quality. If we just take a simple step of recycling the waste instead of throwing it into the environment, we would be doing a great job of saving the environment.

Trees are the lungs of the planet; therefore, very essential members of the environment. They act as filters too and keep the air quality index of a place high. They consume carbon dioxide and emit life-essential oxygen. No need to mention the millions of life forms that the trees sustain ā€“ birds, insects, reptiles, etc. The more threes we save, we would be doing a great deal towards improving environmental health.

  • Donā€™t Litter

How many of you have noticed plastic bags, bottles, food packages, etc. littered around at places like beaches, monuments, and market places. The litter is the most damaging to the environment for it simply rots and pollutes it. The best we can do to save the environment is to not litter. Make it a habit to dispose of the waste properly in a dust bin. If you donā€™t see one around you then wait until you see one.

  • Educate and Inspire

We should educate and make others aware of the environment and how can it be preserved. Special stress should be given on teaching the youngsters and the children. When young children are taught about the value of the environment, they will acknowledge its significance when they grow up. We should also inspire others by planting trees and organizing cleanliness campaigns.

The protection of the environment is in the hands of humans. Only humans can take initiative and save the environment, thereby saving lives on the planet.

Essay on How to Protect the Environment

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – Reasons and Ways to Protect the Environment

In simple words, the environment refers to everything that surrounds us. The trees, plants, forests, rivers, and all are our natural environment. Unfortunately, this natural environment of ours is under threat due to human activities. Humans are damaging the environment on a daily basis, pressing the need for its protection. In this essay, we will discuss on why in the first place we need to protect the environment and the ways we can do so.

Why do we Need to Protect the Environment?

The environment is our home. This is where we live. In fact, it is the most essential requirement for life. Below listed are some main reasons of why should we protect the environment.

  • Gives us food

Our environment is the prime source of food that we eat. Everything from grains, cereals to fruits, vegetables, etc. is produced in the environment. Will it be possible for such a huge population to survive without such an abundant food supply? By damaging the environment we are only impeding our own food supply.

  • Supplies Essential Life Elements (Natural Resources)

The environment gives us the two very essential elements, necessary for life ā€“ air and water. We all need air to live, be it animals, plants, or even aquatic animals need oxygen and fresh air. Water is another basic life-sustaining element. If we damage our environment, we are cutting our own supplies of clean air and water.

  • Sustains Livelihood

Billions of people throughout the globe depend on the environment for their livelihood. They have taken up business out of so many resources that the environment provides. Farmers, fruit sellers, fishermen, etc., all depend on the environment for a living.

  • Supports the Complete Eco-System

A balanced and non-damaged environment supports the complete ecosystem in such a way that the planet becomes supportive of life. With a balanced ecosystem, life flourishes, and species expand.

How can we Protect the Environment ā€“ 5 Simple Ways?

Below we will go through five simple ways to protect the environment –

  • Control Waste

Improper disposal of waste is the main problem that threatens the environment today. The waste just spreads into the environment, getting into the soil, water, and air and polluting them. Proper waste disposal techniques must be employed to reduce environmental damage.

  • Rain Water Harvesting

Water, either surface or underground water, is an essential resource that impacts the overall health of the environment. If the water runs dry, so would the environment. Rainwater harvesting is a good option to save water and the environment as well.

  • Become Eco-Friendly

It would be in the best interest of the environment, for us to become environment savvy. We can do that by using bio-degradable carry bags instead of plastic, using paper bags, planting trees, taking part in cleanliness campaigns, and a lot more.

  • Stay Away from Chemicals

Avoid the use of chemicals as far as possible, primarily in the agriculture sector. If it cannot be avoided then at least make sure that no chemical reaches the environment and is neutralized after use.

  • Walk More Drive Less

Vehicles today have become the main source of environmental pollution. The exhaust emits poisonous and harmful gases into the environment. If we chose to use vehicles only when it is unavoidable, then we would be helping the environment become clean and healthy.

The environment is the place where we live in and making it dirty would be the last thing you would like to do. It is our duty to keep the environment clean and safe for life ā€“ not our own but also of other living species as well.

Performing Arts at Iowa

Promotional image for Fierce featuring four young girls with their backs turned all wearing the same jean jacket with a blue fist, the power symbol, on the back and there is a multicolored design emanating from their jackets into the background

UI students shine on the Hancher stage in Fierce

The Iowa premiere of Fierce marks a major moment in Hancherā€™s current season. Students from the School of Music, the Department of Dance and Department of Theatre Arts are coming together to produce this empowering new opera that celebrates young women. Ā

Fierce is a 21 st -century opera that follows four teenage girlsā€”Vesta, Nyomi, Morgan, and Rumerā€”on their journey toward identity and purpose as they write their college essays in a high school writersā€™ workshop. The young women face an array of concerns including popularity, social media, parental expectations, self-determination, and personal loss. But these girls are fierce! They are determined, tenacious, and strong. Together they find community, self-empowerment, and the confidence to embrace the next chapter of their life.Ā  Ā

ā€œI love the story,ā€ says Meenakshi Chinmai, a second-year Theatre Arts MFA candidate in stage management and international student from India who is the assistant stage manager for Fierce . ā€œItā€™s great to work so closely with four young women who are close to my age, on a story that is so relatable and fun.ā€ Ā

Fierce was originally commissioned for Cincinnati Opera. Dr. William Menefield, a composer, musician, and UI assistant professor of Jazz Studies in the School of Music, wrote the music for the opera in collaboration with acclaimed author and librettist Sheila Williams. Menefield will be leading the creative team for the Hancher premier as the productionā€™s director.Ā  Ā

ā€œThereā€™s a real balance between being a director and a teacher,ā€ Menefield explains. ā€œThere are moments when, as director, I am looking for something specific to happen on stage, either musically or with character development. But they also came to the university to learn.ā€ Ā

ā€œSomething Iā€™ve enjoyed about working with Dr. Menefield and the production team is that theyā€™ve fostered an environment of growth,ā€ says Maddie Yankell, a grad student in Music Education from Morestown , NJ, who plays the role of Vesta in Fierce . ā€œWeā€™ll often stop to discuss acting methods or vocal technique, which is so important because, at the end of the day, weā€™re a learning community.ā€ Ā

The music in Fierce comes from a variety of influences including blues, Afro-Cuban & Latin rhythms, dynamic orchestral sounds and much more. ā€œI think Dr. Menefield called it a genre salad,ā€ explains Brie Bevans, a fifth-year undergraduate in music education who is playing the role of Morgan.Ā  Ā

ā€œThe opera is a fusion of every genre of singing Iā€™ve studied,ā€ Bevans describes the intricacies of performing Menefieldā€™s intricate composition. ā€œFor a long time, I felt like I had two modes of voiceā€”my opera voice and my jazzy chest voice. Iā€™ve really had to learn how to merge them for this performance. There are moments where we are singing these pop-like melodies but weā€™re performing them in operatic registers.ā€Ā  Ā

In addition to a range of talented student singers and musicians, Fierce also features four dancers ā€”Fabiola Casteneda-Santiago (BA student in Biology), Chloe Schwab (BA in Theatre Arts), Joslyn Sheley (BA in Psychology, Political Science, Pre-Law), and Trinity Woody (MA in Dance Pedagogy and Instruction, Pre-Business)ā€”and a student choreographer, Cami Rezabek.Ā  Ā

ā€œIā€™ve felt really respected in the process,ā€ says Rezabek, a fourth-year BFA candidate in the Department of Dance. ā€œI think it really helps that Dr. Menefield is both composer and director. Not only can I hear the feeling and intention in the music itself, but heā€™s also there to provide me with feedback. Heā€™s always treated me like a professional, so heā€™ll tell me if somethingā€™s not working and, on the other hand, heā€™s not afraid to show enthusiasm when the choreography comes together.ā€Ā  Ā

Rezabek stepped in as choreographer in early January and has similarly faced the challenge of working with a mix of different genres. ā€œI had to do a lot of research,ā€ she explains the process. ā€œFor example, Nyomiā€™s scene references house, salsa, and a few other Latin styles. I havenā€™t done a lot of salsa, so I really had put in the work because we want to show something authentic.ā€Ā  Ā

Fierce spans the entire oeuvre of Performing Arts At Iowa, offering beautifully choreographed dance numbers, amazing musical performances, and heartfelt acting and storytelling.Ā  Ā

ā€œOne thing Iā€™ve enjoyed about this is that itā€™s very much theatre,ā€ Chinmai explains. ā€œSometimes opera can feel more like a recital, where the focus is on the singing. But Fierce is theatre. There is an emphasis put on acting as well as singingā€”and I really like Dr. Menefieldā€™s approach.ā€ Ā

The cast and crew of Fierce has become very close, and they describe the energy in rehearsals as positive and energizing.Ā  Ā

ā€œWe laugh a lot, we make up dances, we just have fun,ā€ Yankell describes the environment. ā€œWorking on an opera can be stressful, especially when you also have classes and schoolwork. So, to come to rehearsal and know Iā€™m going to laugh is a really refreshing experience.ā€ Ā

ā€œIt feels really special,ā€ explains Chinmai, ā€œgetting to build relationships with people in dance and music. I feel like itā€™s not every day that weā€™re all brought together like this and that we all get to put this production on at Hancher.ā€ Ā

The Iowa premier of Fierce ā€”a collaborative tour-de-forceā€”is coming to Hancherā€™s Hadley Stage April 26-27. Tickets are available at hancher.uiowa.edu .

ā€œI cannot wait for people to come and see our show,ā€ Bevans says. ā€œItā€™s hilarious, itā€™s heartbreaking, and itā€™s real. It really doesnā€™t matter who you are or how old you are. I just think people will really relate to the message of this show.ā€Ā  Ā
