Thanks for the article! Trying to figure out the best way to find jobs for typing manuscripts, scans or other materials into word/excel, etc. Can’t use Upwork (long story) – are there specific resources to find those kinds of at home jobs?

Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I think there are far fewer of those jobs out there than people might expect as a lot of that work can be done with technology nowadays.

I’d suggest reading these two articles:

– Online Typing Jobs – Data Entry

If you can’t use Upwork, Freelancer and PeoplePerHour are alternatives worth checking out.

Best wishes,

Hi ben, Can You help with any Company interested in an gold buying agent based in png to buy alluvial gold for them.

I’m afraid that’s not something I know ANYTHING about!

I’ve been following you for awhile an firstly, I’d like to congratulate you on your site. You’re growing and doing a fabulous job.

My question is about companies scanning your computer to see if it has the right stuff. I applied to TTEC and I started a scan and it made me so nervous, I stopped it midway. It seemed like they might be doing more than just checking my hardware. I realized that I had given them total remote access to my hard drive.

Can you give me/us some guidance on that?

Thank you so much!

Thank you for your kind comment Janice 🙂

I think you’re wise to be cautious. I’m not personally familiar with TTEC or this scanning process…However, they appear like an established and legitimate company and so long as it’s clear what they’re looking for and what the process is about, I think it’s probably OK.

All the best Ben

I’m too am looking for work from home opportunities as I hate going to a brick and mortar establishment due to my anxieties and paranoias of people. I am very good at customer service and giving direction.

I also had them do a scan to see if my computer had what it took to work for them. Unfortunately, it did not. Since the scan I have seen no difference in performance nor have I seen anything that makes me think they have infiltrated my PC.

I want to write…..I can write and have been turning out restaurant reviews, once a month, on restaurants in my geographical area for six years for our local online newspaper. Fashion is another area of my expertise. I have been a Fashion Sales Consultant for many years.

If you use the search box and type “writing” there are lots of relevant articles on the site 🙂

Suggest starting by researching the companies on the list. This article (link) should help you too.

Thank you so much for this information, it’s very much needed!!

Happy to help!

Hello Ben, I am wondering if there are any work from home data entry jobs available? Most of the jobs I see are all call center related (incoming/outgoing/troubleshoot).

They’re not as common as people think they are, and many such jobs end up on microworking platforms like Clickworker (link) and Mechanical Turk (link) . This article (link) will help you find what’s out there.

Hey Ben Good Day! Do you know if there are truly legit copy and paste jobs out there??? ones with no fees and stuff….

Well, not really , the closest thing to that is the kind of repetitive work you find on microworking sites such as ClickWorker (link) and Mechanical Turk (link) .

Under the “SYKES” heading, the company name is spelled “SKYES”.

Not any more – well spotted – thanks.

Just a quick note that your Philips headline is misspelled.

Corrected – thanks for letting me know.

150 Work From Home Jobs – The Big List You Won’t Want to Miss

January 22, 2024

When it comes to work-from-home jobs, the possibilities are endless. Over the past 15 years, technology has allowed more and more tasks to be performed remotely. And more and more companies and contractors are turning to work-from-home job opportunities due to increased flexibility and reduction in costs – for both sides.

If you are in the market for a work-from-home  job , there are several categories to consider and companies that may be hiring as we speak.

Accounting & Bookkeeping

With today’s technology, almost all accounting activities can be performed virtually. Accounting positions often require a degree. Many bookkeeping positions are entry-level and more along the lines of data entry of receipts and invoices.

  • Bateman & Co.  hires CPAs to prepare tax returns for individuals and corporations. These are permanent, part-time positions. Three years of experience is necessary.
  • AccountingDepartment.com has virtual jobs available in many areas of accounting and bookkeeping. The experience and training required will vary by position.
  • ClickNwork pays financial analysts up to $150 per hour to complete economic papers and company profiles. High-level experience is required.
  • TAD Accounting offers full-service accounting solutions to small businesses and frequently hires remote bookkeepers.
  • ClickAccounts strives to be the best BPO service. Contact them by email to learn more about joining their team.
  • Bookminders  allow their accountants to work from home. You will need a four-year degree and at least five years of experience. A car is also necessary for meeting with local clients.

When you see ads saying “work from home for Google,” quality rating is perhaps the only opportunity that is legit though you won’t be contracted by Google directly. The below companies hire contractors to rate the legitimacy and quality of search engine results and ads and report back to search engines like Google and Bing. The work is only part-time and you may experience an ebb and flow in workload most companies have a non-compete that will prohibit you from working in the same capacity at another company. But the good news is these companies won’t ask you to pay for some training booklet like those scam ads.

  • Appen  hires Web Search Evaluators and Social Media Evaluators to work flexible, part-time schedules up to 4 hours a day (5 days a week). This is an entry-level position so the required experience is minimal.

Bilingual Interpreting & Translating

These positions obviously require candidates to be fluent in more than one language. The work is usually pretty flexible.

  • Telelanguage hires for several positions on occasion including remote telephone interpreters. Experience and training are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Accurapid is always open to new talent. You will need to complete an application and sample test.
  • LanguageLine Solutions has been providing translator and interpreter services for over 34 years. International opportunities are available.
  • Ubiquis hires interpreters, translators, and foreign language transcriptionists.
  • Translations ABC is continually looking for qualified contractors.
  • ACADEMICWORLD is specifically looking for those with experience editing and translating academic writing.

Coaching & Consulting

Is one of your natural born traits motivating others? Are you able to look at a business and see the holes and spaces for improvement? You may be a great business coach or consultant.

  • HourlyNerd contracts consultants with an MBA or those working towards one to assist businesses with everything from financial analysis to developing marketing plans.
  • Tony Robbins hires business coaches with at least seven years of experience.
  • Toptal contracts the top business professionals worldwide and everyone works remotely. There is a waitlist. Applicants are screened in batches.

Customer Service – Chat & Email

Work-at-home chat jobs are extremely coveted. You will rarely see them pop up and the competition from applicants is high when they do. Because of that, I’m simply listing the company name and what they call the position. Keep an eye on their job boards.

  • Apple – iTunes chat operator
  • Wayfair – Chat Sales and Service Consultant (Bachelor’s degree or seven years experience needed)
  • Site Staff – not always hiring, but always accepting apps

Note: FlexJobs is a job board that lists only researched, remote opportunities. Subscribe to their feed for some great opportunities in the chat arena and beyond.

Customer Service – Phone

jobs for homeworkers

Stop! Before you skip over this section, there are a few things you should know about work-at-home jobs that require you to speak with customers over the phone. For starters, it’s not all telemarketing and sales.

There are a lot of unique gigs that you may find interesting.

Yardi Matrix, for example, hires remote workers to call and get information about apartments that are available for rent. And they don’t even care if your kids can be heard in the background. If you are serious about making a full-time income from home quickly, you also need to consider these jobs are plentiful, they require little experience and equipment, and most pay in the $8-$15 per hour range.

Take some time to see what’s over there and what they have to offer. Glassdoor.com is one of my favorite places to get feedback on opportunities. You may even end up with a full-time work-from-home job with benefits! (I’ve added notes for anything unique)

  • Amazon often only hires from specific states, so be sure to always check the job listing.
  • American Express works to deliver Relationship Care® through their agents, providing top-notch customer service where their agents find tailored solutions to unique customer queries.
  • ACD Direct requires that you have both call center and work-at-home experience to join their network of at-home agents
  • Alorica at Home (formerly West at Home) provides great flexibility and variety to their agents, so you may walk people through as-seen-on-tv sales one shift and tech support the next.
  • Appen ‘s goal is to help big companies create better experiences for their customers through the improvement of eCommerce sites, social media platforms, and more.
  • Asurion offers work-at-home opportunities to agents who want to provide tech-oriented customer support for various personal devices.
  • VIPdesk hires customer service reps to work from home in a variety of industries
  • Concentrix regularly holds virtual job fairs where you can chat with live recruiters about their work-at-home positions.
  • DoorDash rarely lists this opportunity on their site: watch for Order Placer on Indeed or Craigslist.
  • Hilton provides an opportunity to build a career in the hospitality industry (complete with advancement opportunities) without ever leaving your home
  • LiveOps provides customer support for a variety of industries, so you may find yourself doing inbound sales, roadside assistance, insurance claims, or any number of other call types.
  • Maritz Research hires interviewers to conduct consumer surveys on behalf of its big-name clients – and they offer a variety of other work-from-home positions as well.
  • Nordstrom/Hautelook occasionally offers work-from-home positions that are generally available to residents in certain states such as Florida and North Carolina.
  • PostMates: you have to get a referral from an existing agent, so watch the WPLH forum for openings.
  • Sedgwick , which handles reporting insurance claims, recruits from a full array of demographics, with room for experienced professionals, industry newcomers, and students as well.
  • Sykes requires you to pass several assessments before participating in a virtual interview which involves both individual and group discussions
  • Sutherland CloudSource has been in business for over 30 years and built an extensive, global virtual call center to leverage for the benefit of their clients.
  • U-Haul needs people for their remote contact center who can assist their customers in sales and reservations, roadside assistance, and general customer service.
  • Westat is a research company that hires remote workers to conduct phone interviews: search their job board for Telephone Data Collection.
  • Working Solutions , aka WorkingSol, is another company offering flexible and scalable outsourced customer service for their clients.
  • Yardi Matrix (previously Pierce-Eislen) hires rent surveyors seasonally to keep their data up-to-date on apartment communities across the nation; this is a good gig if you don’t have a quiet work environment as background noise can help rather than hinder here.

Data entry is hard to come by, especially if you are looking to earn a living wage. Because the competition for these positions is so high, rates are often super low. And the wait list is often super long.

  • Great American Opportunities contractors freelance to enter order forms remotely. There is a long wait list and they only offer to test the first few days in January and June. Competition is high, so this job is not listed on their website. You have to email to request the test on January 1 or June 1.
  • The Smart Crowd , formerly Virtual Bee, works on a piecemeal payscale. The pay can be really low and the work is sporadic.

  • Sigtracker hires contractors to process voter registrations and petition signatures. They only have openings a few times per year and you will need to pass a test.

So this one is not necessarily working from home, but we all need to leave the house sometime. And for those with a more outgoing personality that may find remote work stifling, making money as a contract driver can be a great way to get out there and meet new people. For safety reasons, these gigs require a background check and valid proof of insurance. Most also have required training.

Medical Coding , Transcription & Billing

Remote jobs in this field require training or previous work experience. That being said, they also tend to pay a little better than many work-at-home positions. Microtasking

These sites are not going to pay the bills on their own, but many people enjoy them for their varied tasks and quick completion.

  • mTurk , or Amazon Mechanical Turk, is a site I used to visit on my lunch breaks way back before I started working from home. The tasks include data entry , transcription, completing surveys, etc. The pay is pretty low, but the tasks can be quick and easy. There are a couple of really good subreddits to follow for tips and HITsWorthTurking .
  • Clickworker has listed among their categories of help wanted text creation, data categorization, data tagging, editing, and more.
  • Microworkers isn’t as big as mTurk, but the pay may be marginally better.
  • Field Agent is a smartphone app that lists local tasks in your community. You may be asked to do things like visit a local store to check the price of an item or snap a picture of a display.

In this position, you will be taking an audio file and typing it into text form. These are production-based pay. The faster and more accurate you type, the more you will earn. Some companies hire with no experience, others require it.

There are several ways you can go with online tutoring . If you want to tutor elementary or high schools in traditional subjects like math or science, you are probably going to need a state teaching certificate. If you want to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults, that may not be necessary. Either route you take, tutoring can be a great side hustle as there’s high demand in the evenings and on weekends.

  • Studypool – Connecting students with tutors on a per-question basis. Simply answer students’ questions and get paid. Earn up to $500/week tutoring part-time or potentially up to 60K a year tutoring, only 15% commission.
  • InstaEDU pays per hour, you must be enrolled in college or a college graduate to apply. You also must have a Facebook profile to become a tutor.
  • At Tutor.com, college students, teachers, and industry professionals are encouraged to apply. There is a current need for math, science, and foreign language tutors
  • Aim-for-A requires a teaching certificate and Bachelor’s degree.
  • EduwizardS allows you to set your own rates. A Bachelor’s degree or higher is required.
  • SmartThinking offers paid training. Pay is hourly and they want you to commit to a minimum of 9 hours per week.
  • goFLUENT offers ESL tutoring. Employee positions are available. They ask for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. They are hiring in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, New York, and Washington, prioritizing candidates who speak fluent Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish, or Portuguese, in addition to excellent English.
  • Cambly – Pays $.17/minute for time spent teaching English online ($10.20/hour). Payment is made by PayPal weekly.
  • VIPKID Reportedly pays $14 to $22 per hour (per their website at the time of publishing this post). Applicant needs to be a resident of the US or Canada with at least 1 year or 500 hours of teaching experience. You also need an Undergraduate degree and a reliable computer and internet.

Virtual Assisting

Becoming a virtual assistant can be a great opportunity for those with an administrative background. You may be making calls, setting appointments, and scheduling a book tour. The possibilities are endless.

  • Fancy Hands contracts virtual assistants to complete small tasks like scheduling appointments and internet research. The pay is per task and determined by the complexity and amount of time it will take to complete.
  • BELAY hires Virtual Executive Assistants. Tasks are varied. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Gabbyville specializes in virtual receptionist and customer support though their task list spills over into email management, online scheduling, and more. You will need to email to inquire about job openings.

  • Time Etc hires virtual assistants to work with their clients across many industries – they have worked for ghostwriters, executive assistants, email marketers, and more.

Voice Over Acting

Have you ever wondered who narrates those audio books or commercials? It might just be someone working from the comfort of their own home.

  • Filmless works with Fortune 500 companies. The turnaround time is tight – 24 hours. You will need to have a home studio.
  • VoiceBunny contracts experienced voice actors. Projects will be sporadic. You set your own rates.

The Best Place to Find Even More Work from Home Jobs

If you’re looking for traditional work, you can always go to the traditional job boards (like Indeed, Career Builder, and Monster) and search for jobs using keywords like “remote” and “telecommute.” You can also search for industry-specific job boards online and see what kinds of ads are posted there — and how frequently.

You can read blogs like this one, where I write about all the different work-from-home jobs I can find. I also share hot job leads in my email newsletter, which is great because it means the job ads come to you instead of you having to go find them. But if you rely on sites like mine, you’ll know about the great jobs out there but you’re potentially up against some steep competition when it comes to landing them.

If you want to zero in on the best work-at-home jobs, I highly recommend one source:

FlexJobs is absolutely where you want to be if you’re committed to finding a work-at-home job. Yes, you can find legitimate job ads on the job boards. In fact, the job boards that require a fee to post an ad are most likely to be legitimate, because many scammers aren’t going to pay money to operate their scam.

But if you rely on those, you have to spend more time, dig deeper, and sift through all kinds of results that may or may not actually be relevant to what you want.

With FlexJobs , you can bypass all of that.

8 Part-Time Jobs Retirees Can Do From Home

These remote positions are popular among workers over 55.

A man is looking at his phone with a headset on at a desk in his home

Stacy Rapacon,

If you're considering working in retirement, you're not alone. The majority of Americans (57 percent) plan to work during their golden years, with 36 percent opting for part time and 21 percent full time, according to the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies .

The good news is that working from home has gained more acceptance during the coronavirus outbreak. That means there are plenty of job opportunities available now for retirees who are seeking remote work.

To help you find a good part-time work-from-home role, we started by identifying the most common part-time jobs held by workers over age 55 , based on data collected by compensation research firm PayScale. Then, with the help of FlexJobs, an online job market specializing in flexible and remote work, we sifted through the list for positions that can be done remotely and are available now. (Note: FlexJobs charges users a fee to view its full job postings.) Bonus: A few of these occupations score highly among workers in terms of satisfaction and meaningfulness.

Take a look at these eight popular part-time jobs that retirees can do from home. You may click on this link for a search of all work from home jobs available on the AARP Job Board.

1. Bookkeeper

Portion of part-time workers over age 55: 46 percent (All part-time jobs: 24.5 percent)

Median hourly pay: $17.74 (All part-time jobs: $14.76)

Satisfaction rating: 77 percent (All part-time jobs: 63 percent)

High-meaning rating: 48 percent (All part-time jobs: 57 percent)

Find remote bookkeeper jobs

Bookkeepers create and maintain a company's financial records, which includes issuing payments to suppliers and invoices to customers. Step up to the title of full-charge bookkeeper and you'll take on sole responsibility for a company's accounting matters, including supervising lower-level bookkeepers and accounting clerks. More older workers go for the full-charge role and enjoy the higher pay that comes with greater responsibility; 74 percent of all full-charge bookkeepers are over 55, and their median pay is $21.10 an hour. Either way, you can find opportunities to keep your accounting expertise at home and provide your services virtually.

2. Registered nurse

Portion of part-time workers over age 55: 23 percent

Median hourly pay: $32.03

Satisfaction rating: 66 percent

High-meaning rating: 76 percent

Find remote resident nurse jobs

Telehealth services were growing in popularity before the coronavirus hit the U.S. and got an extra boost from the pandemic. As a result, nurses and other medical professionals can continue providing care and expertise from the safety of their own homes.

But the standards for filling such jobs remotely are no more lax: You still need to have completed the rigorous education and training necessary to become a nurse. Plus, you have to maintain a nursing license in the state where you plan to work, which can be tricky if you're working remotely and are able to assist patients who live elsewhere. ( Licensure requirements vary by state .) Still, both the relatively high pay and the sense of meaning can make the hurdles worthwhile.

3. Administrative assistant

You may need experience in a particular field or geographic location to qualify. One opportunity, for example, available through staffing agency Equivity, seeks candidates with litigation experience in California ; another position requires estate planning experience .

If you hadn't known it already, the weeks of required homeschooling at the beginning of the pandemic surely proved that child care assistance is an essential service for parents. And while care providers cannot exactly replicate their work via screens and remote services, they may be able to apply some of their skills in a work-from-home opportunity as a tutor, teacher or camp counselor.

Of course, you'd need expertise in a particular subject to teach it, but demand for knowledge goes beyond what you might think of as standard academic curriculum. For instance, Outschool, a marketplace for online classes, offers a platform for teachers to share their knowledge and talents in a wide range of activities, such as shoe tying , French braiding and creating a Dungeons and Dragons character . You can even host your own show-and-tell or storytime session.

8. Sales associate

Find sales associate jobs

Companies across a range of industries, including retail, finance and health care, are seeking star salespeople with various experience levels (and a license to sell, if necessary) to push their products and services from a remote location. And despite the low hourly pay, you may be able to earn more through commissions — potentially much more if you're moving cars, electronics or other high-ticket items. Workers in some higher-level (and higher-earning) positions may even manage a sales team remotely.

History of Chelyabinsk Oblast

People began to settle in the Southern Urals in the Paleolithic era. Bogdanovka site on the Ural River (Kizilsky district) is the most ancient archaeological site found on the territory of the region (about 70 thousand years). The age of Paleolithic layers in Ignatievka cave (Katav-Ivanovsky district), famous for its wall paintings, is about 15 thousand years. There are numerous archaeological sites of the Stone Age, settlements of the Bronze and Iron Ages.

In the 13th century, the territory of the Southern Urals was part of the Mongol Empire. Kesene mausoleum, preserved to our days near Varna village, is an outstanding monument of the late Horde time. The first Russian settlements in what is now the Chelyabinsk region appeared in the late 17th century.

Administratively the formation of the region began in the 18th century. It was the result of Peter’s I policy aimed at developing producing forces of the country and the expansion of its borders. This was reflected in the activities of the Orenburg expedition. For military and commercial purposes the expedition founded a number of fortresses, one of them was the fortress of Chelyabinsk (1736).

More Historical Facts…

In 1737, Isetskaya province was founded that included the northern part of the present Chelyabinsk region and the Kurgan region. In 1743, Chelyabinsk became the center of the province. In 1744, Orenburg gubernia was formed, it included Isetskaya and Ufimskaya provinces.

In the second half of the 18th century, mining and metallurgical areas of the Southern Urals began to grow rapidly. Several large mining plants were built, which became the basis for future towns. The first towns were Chelyabinsk, Verhneuralsk (1781) and Troitsk (1784).

In the early 19th century, most of the territory of the region was part of the Orenburg gubernia. Since the mid-19th century, Orenburg Cossacks started the rapid development of the steppe areas. New settlements were named in honor of the battles and victories of the Russian army: Varna, Fershampenuaz, Borodino, Paris and others.

After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (1891-1916), the province became the largest transportation hub connecting central Russia, the Urals and Siberia.

In 1919, Chelyabinsk gubernia was formed. November, 3, 1923, Ural Oblast with the capital in Yekaterinburg was formed. January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was enlarged and was named Chelyabinsk Oblast. Later on, the territory of the region was diminished not once. In 1943, 32 districts were transferred to the newly formed Kurgan Oblast. After that, the borders of Chelyabinsk Oblast remained almost unchanged.

During the Second World War, this region played an important role producing metals, ammunition and military equipment. After the war, Chelyabinsk became the supplier of equipment and human resources for the restoration of Stalingrad, Donbass and other areas of the USSR.

In the 1950s, part of the territory of the region was subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the accident at the plant for processing waste “Mayak”.

The collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economic situation in the region. From 1990 to 2000, rail transportation halved. In 1995, the decline in production in all sectors was 52%, in agriculture - 44%.

February 15, 2013 a relatively large meteorite flew over the territory of the oblast. It became known as the Chelyabinsk meteorite (diameter - about 17 meters, weight - about 10 thousand tons). The meteorite exploded in the vicinity of Chelyabinsk, at an altitude of 15-25 km. Several fragments of it fell in the area of Lake Chebarkul.

What We Know About Kamala Harris’s $5 Trillion Tax Plan So Far

The vice president supports the tax increases proposed by the Biden White House, according to her campaign.

  • Share full article

Kamala Harris, in a lavender blazer, speaking into two mics at a lectern with a crowd of people seated behind her.

By Andrew Duehren

Reporting from Washington

In a campaign otherwise light on policy specifics, Vice President Kamala Harris this week quietly rolled out her most detailed, far-ranging proposal yet: nearly $5 trillion in tax increases over a decade.

That’s how much more revenue the federal government would raise if it adopted a number of tax increases that President Biden proposed in the spring . Ms. Harris’s campaign said this week that she supported those tax hikes, which were thoroughly laid out in the most recent federal budget plan prepared by the Biden administration.

No one making less than $400,000 a year would see their taxes go up under the plan. Instead, Ms. Harris is seeking to significantly raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Congress has previously rejected many of these tax ideas, even when Democrats controlled both chambers.

While tax policy is right now a subplot in a turbulent presidential campaign, it will be a primary policy issue in Washington next year. The next president will have to work with Congress to address the tax cuts Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017. Many of those tax cuts expire after 2025, meaning millions of Americans will see their taxes go up if lawmakers don’t reach a deal next year.

Here’s an overview of what we now know — and still don’t know — about the Democratic nominee’s views on taxes.

Higher taxes on corporations

The most recent White House budget includes several proposals that would raise taxes on large corporations . Chief among them is raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 21 percent, a step that the Treasury Department estimated could bring in $1.3 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years.

Thousands of Next floor staff win equal pay case with supermarket workers also bringing claims

The ruling has been described as the first successful equal pay claim of its type against a national retailer. Similar claims are being brought against major supermarket chains.

Thousands of Next workers have won an equal pay claim against their employer.

An employment tribunal said the mostly female sales consultant floor staff should not be paid less than warehouse staff, the majority of whom are male.

It's the result of a more than six-year legal battle involving 3,540 claimants working at the high street giant.

Money blog: The hidden refund that could save you hundreds

To defeat the claim Next had to prove there was a difference in wages because of a "material factor" unrelated to sex discrimination but it failed to do so.

How did Next justify the pay difference?

The company said the pay difference between the roles was because the going "market rate" for a sales consultant was different to a warehouse operator. This had to be observed to ensure the viability of the business, it said.

But that argument was not enough.

The business need was not so large as to overcome the discriminatory effect of lower basic pay, the tribunal said.

"There must usually be a more compelling business reason for such arrangements to be justifiable".

Next said it will appeal the ruling.

A legal first for 'undervalued' workers

The firm representing the workers Leigh Day said it was the first successful equal pay claim of its type against a national retailer.

Customer service was "demanding" and often "undervalued", said one of the three lead claimants Helen Scarsbrook who worked for more than 20 years at Next.

"Anyone who works in retail knows that it is a physically and emotionally tough job," she said.

"Customer service, in particular, is very demanding and we do that in addition to lots of other essential tasks that go to make Next a successful business. You become so used to having your work undervalued that you can easily start to doubt it yourself."

Next's response

Responding to the ruling Next said: "The tribunal rejected the majority of the claims made by the claimants, in particular all claims of direct discrimination, and all aspects of the claims made in respect of bonus pay.

"The tribunal expressed serious criticisms of the claimants' expert evidence and overwhelmingly accepted the evidence of Next's expert and fact witnesses."

Trudeau announces reduction in temporary foreign workers, suggests more immigration changes to come

Government reviewing immigration streams amid spike in newcomer unemployment.

jobs for homeworkers

Social Sharing

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday the federal government will reduce the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada after a historic surge that some experts say has fuelled unemployment among immigrants and young people.

Trudeau also said the government is considering a reduction to the number of permanent residents Canada accepts each year — a potentially major policy change after years of increasing immigration levels on the Liberal government's watch.

The government loosened temporary foreign worker (TFW) restrictions during a severe post-COVID labour shortage — a decision that led, in particular, to a spike in the number of low-wage workers.

Trudeau said employers in high unemployment areas — places where the unemployment rate is six per cent or higher — will not be able to hire low-wage TFWs, with limited exceptions for "food security sectors" like agriculture and food and fish processing as well as construction and health care where acute staffing shortages still exist.

In another reversal, the government said employers will no longer be allowed to hire more than 10 per cent of their total workforce through the TFW program.

PM says fall immigration levels plan will look at both permanent and temporary residents

As well, low-wage TFWs will also be limited to one-year contracts, down from the current two.

"We need Canadian businesses to invest in training and technology, not increasing their reliance on low-cost foreign labour," Trudeau said.

"It's not fair to Canadians struggling to find a good job, and it's not fair to those temporary foreign workers, some of whom are being mistreated and exploited."

TFW workers rapidly increased over 6 years

Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault acknowledged there's more slack in the job market now than there was when the country emerged from the pandemic with huge gaps in the labour market.

According to the Bank of Canada's recent monetary report, the "newcomer" or immigrant unemployment rate now stands at 11.6 per cent — well above the overall unemployment rate of 6.4 per cent that was recorded in June.

For youths, which includes people between the ages of 15 and 24, the unemployment rate is even higher at 13.5 per cent — the highest it's been in a decade, according to federal figures.

Meanwhile, the low-wage TFW sector, which has admitted workers in food services but also in sectors like construction and hospitals, has grown from 15,817 such workers in 2016 to 83,654 in 2023, according to federal data.

jobs for homeworkers

Ministers explain why Canada’s changing its temporary foreign worker program

Boissonnault said today's changes will reduce the number of low-wage TFWs by about 65,000, bringing the number to pre-pandemic levels.

Housing Minister Sean Fraser, who was immigration minister when the TFW regulations were first relaxed in 2022, said clamping down on temporary workers will also help alleviate some of the stress on the housing market, especially at the lower end of the spectrum where competition for more affordable homes is fierce.

"We expect the changes made today could potentially reduce the pressure on tens of thousands of housing units across the country," Fraser said.

Immigration system 'broken,' says Conservative MP

Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman, the party's deputy leader, said the government's decision to curb TFWs is a sign that the government is "walking back the disastrous policies of Sean Fraser who, at the time, was immigration minister. He broke our immigration system and now is responsible for fixing housing."

Mike Moffatt is the senior director of policy at the Smart Prosperity Institute, a think-tank based at the University of Ottawa, who has written about the TFW program and its impact on youth unemployment.

Moffatt said Ottawa's move to reduce the number of low-wage TFWs is "a great first step, but it's only a first step. There's a lot more that needs to be done."

  • Liberals say they will rein in temporary foreign worker program after historic influx
  • UN report on Canada's temporary foreign workers details the many ways they've been abused
  • As Trudeau cabinet meets, Liberal MPs look for signs of change following byelection loss

He said there should also be tweaks to the high-wage component of the program — there's been an uptick in TFWs filling entry-level office jobs — because there's a sufficient supply of Canadian workers to take on those roles.

A migrant rights group meanwhile criticized the government's decision to rein in the program.

"High unemployment, low wages and unaffordable housing is not being caused by immigrants and migrants — these are caused by employer exploitation and policy failures," said Syed Hussan, the executive director of Migrant Workers Alliance for Change.

"Migrants build communities, and they deserve equal rights and respect, not scapegoating," he said, suggesting high immigrant unemployment rates are driven by "racism and discrimination," not the influx of foreign workers.

Permanent resident numbers could also be adjusted

Asked by CBC News if the government is considering broader changes to the immigration system with the "newcomer" unemployment rate at nearly 12 per cent, Trudeau said the government is going to review its immigration levels this fall.

Asked if a reduction in the number of permanent residents is on the table, Trudeau suggested it's an issue he takes "extremely seriously" and said that topic would be discussed at the cabinet retreat this week.

According to the government's immigration plan — which was just published last year — the country is expected to admit  about 485,000  permanent residents in 2024 and 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026.

"We're making sure that the entire package makes as much sense as possible for the needs of Canadians and for the needs of our economy," Trudeau said.

"We'll be looking at unemployment rates and opportunities to make further adjustments over the course of this fall as we come forward with comprehensive level plans that will respond to the reality that Canada's facing now and in years and decades to come," he said.

He said immigration needs to be "done right," and that changes may be forthcoming so that "Canada remains a place that is positive in its support for immigration but also responsible in the way we integrate and make sure there's pathways to success for everyone who comes to Canada."

Liberal government announces EV tariff, foreign worker changes

Immigration Minister Marc Miller said "all options are on the table" when it comes to addressing immigration levels.

He acknowledged that some people have expressed concern to him about the current pace of population growth, which is among the highest in the developed world.

He said he's not a "dogmatic" minister who's unwilling to tweak permanent resident figures that the government has already set for the coming years.

"We need to look at where the country is going and make sure we adjust," he said.

"I'm very open to making changes if the economic dictates it, if the social fabric dictates it," he said. "That's smart politics and it's smart policy, and it's something that Canadians expect us to do."

  • Why the health-care sector is hiring temporary foreign workers like never before

Phil Triadafilopoulos, a professor at the University of Toronto who studies immigration, said any move to reduce the number of permanent residents coming in would "presumably take some pressure off the housing market."

"But I don't think it would have a huge effect because I don't anticipate them cutting it very much, if at all," he said.

A move to reduce other forms of non-permanent residents could have a potentially more meaningful impact on just how many people are coming here and the resulting side effects, he said.

In the last three years, the  number of non-permanent residents  — a category that includes TFWs, international students and asylum seekers — has more than doubled from about 1.3 million in 2021 to nearly 2.8 million in the second quarter of this year, according to data compiled by Statistics Canada.

Federal judge throws out U.S. ban on noncompetes

"Noncompetes block workers from freely switching jobs, depriving them of higher wages and better working conditions, and depriving businesses of a talent pool that they need to build and expand," said FTC Chair Lina Khan when the noncompete ban was introduced. A federal court in Texas has thrown out the government’s ban on noncompete agreements that was set to take effect September 4.

In her ruling, Judge Ada Brown of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas wrote that the federal agency had overstepped its power when it approved the ban.

"The FTC lacks substantive rulemaking authority with respect to unfair methods of competition," she wrote. "The role of an administrative agency is to do as told by Congress, not to do what the agency think[s] it should do.”

Ryan LLC, a tax services firm in Dallas, had sued to block the rule just hours after the Federal Trade Commission voted narrowly to ban noncompetes for almost all U.S. workers back in April.

Ryan's lawsuit was joined by several organizations that represent a broad swath of American businesses, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable and the Texas Association of Business.

An estimated 30 million people, or one in five American workers, are bound by noncompetes. The employment agreements typically prevent workers – everyone from minimum wage earners to CEOs – from joining competing businesses or launching ones of their own.

Lina Khan, Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), was one of three commissioners who voted in favor of a new federal rule banning noncompetes for almost all U.S. workers.

The FTC says it is disappointed but will keep fighting to stop noncompetes.

"We are seriously considering a potential appeal, and today’s decision does not prevent the FTC from addressing noncompetes through case-by-case enforcement actions," wrote FTC spokesperson Victoria Graham in a statement.

In requesting relief, Ryan, the tax services firm, had argued that the ban on noncompetes would inflict "serious and irreparable injuries" on its business, including by putting its confidential information at risk and enabling its competitors to poach valuable employees, whose knowledge and training would go out the door.

“The FTC’s ban on non-compete agreements is unwise, unjustifiable, and now officially unlawful," said the firm's general counsel John Smith. "Judge Brown’s decision to push back the government’s overreach is a victory for the rule of law, for Ryan, and for thousands of businesses across the United States that we serve."

'Core to economic liberty'

The FTC has long argued that noncompetes hurt workers.

"The freedom to change jobs is core to economic liberty and to a competitive, thriving economy," said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan in a statement when the proposed rule was first introduced . "Noncompetes block workers from freely switching jobs, depriving them of higher wages and better working conditions, and depriving businesses of a talent pool that they need to build and expand."

According to the FTC, the new rule could lead to wage increases totaling nearly $300 billion per year and the creation of 8,500 new businesses per year, once workers can freely pursue new opportunities without the fear of being taken to court by their employers.

The ban would carve out an exception for senior executives with existing noncompete agreements, on the grounds that these agreements are more likely to have been negotiated. The FTC estimates that less than 1% of workers would qualify as senior executives.

Existing noncompete agreements would not need to be formally rescinded under the rule, but employers would be required to inform their employees that they are no longer enforceable.
