The study focused on best practices in implementing Brigada Eskwela among secondary schools in Batangas Province. Specifically, it aimed to identify the salient features of the Brigada Eskwela Work Plan, and assess the extent of implementation of Brigada Eskwela covering scope of work conducted, resource mobilization, school personnel participation, and community involvement. In addition, the study assessed how Brigada Eskwela broadened community support to basic education relative to curricular activities enrichment, physical facilities improvement, and unity of purpose. Likewise, the issues and opportunities brought by Brigada Eskwela were determined. This study used the descriptive method of research with the questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument using Slovin's formula at 5 percent margin of error. Statistical tools used in the analysis of data were weighted mean, one-way analysis of variance, and Brown-forsy and Scheffe tests. Results revealed that the respondents agreed that Brigada Eskwela is a product of collaborative effort, taps the spirit of volunteerism, and allows people from different sectors to extend help to the schools every year, which are the most salient features of the program. Further, Brigada Eskwela broadens community support to basic education relative to curricular activities enrichment and physical facilities improvement to a moderate extent, while it supports basic education to a great extent in terms of unity of purpose. The primary issue in Brigada Eskwela is following the implementing rules and regulations of the program to make it successful. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences on the assessments of the three groups of respondents in terms of the extent of implementation and support to basic education. However, significant differences were found on opportunities brought by Brigada Eskwela.

Aschale Tadege , eshetu Emiru , molla bekalu

Persistent high dropout rates of secondary school students generate huge social and private costs. Thus, this study was intended to identify the status and causes of secondary school students' dropouts in East Gojjam administrative zone. To achieve this objective descriptive survey research design with mixed approach was employed. From 18 woredas of the zone, six woredas were purposively selected to conduct the study. From these six woredas, six secondary schools were selected using simple random sampling techniques. 175 teachers were selected through systematic random sampling technique to fill questionnaire and 168 of them were properly filled and returned the questionnaires. Qualitative data also collected through interview from 5 principals, 5 supervisors and 5 district education experts. 18 dropout returnee students and 30 Parent-Student-Teacher Association (PSTA) members were also participated in focus group discussions. Documents of schools and zone education department were consulted to examine the trends and status of dropout rates. The obtained quantitative data was analyzed using one-sample t-test and qualitative data was analyzed through word narration thematically. Hence, the study revealed that the trends of students' dropout rates in secondary schools of the study area showed a declining tendency and the highest dropout rates were existed in grade nine. The study also identified that the magnitude of dropout rates of students vary from year to year and among grade levels. The result of the study pointed out that several student-related, parents-related and school-related factors were contributed to secondary school students' dropout in the zone. It is suggested that teachers, principals and school administrations should work with students and their families to minimize early departure of pupils' from secondary schools.

ABSTRACT Case Study: Establishing Quality Education in Government Middle School Nimora of Dharshiwa Block, District Raipur . By : Ajit Kumar Sharma, ABEO, Dharshiwa 1. INTRODUCTION. Government of Chhattisgarh launched 4 year campaign "Shiksha Gunvatta Abhiyan" for improving the quality of school education in October 2015. DHARSHIWA BLOCK first year campaign social audit report revealed that 49% of block primary and middle school fall under C and D category. Government Middle School Nimora, 143 enrolled students belonging to 39% SC, 61% OBC, with 3 teachers, was ranked D category. Staffs were unhappy with the above ranking and were committed to remove stigma of D category. So, along with Mr. U. S Khastri (Former BEO) started mentoring the staff from December 2015 onwards to achieve the objective. 2. OBJECTIVE: To establish quality education through strengthening the learning environment, delivery mechanism and involving community. 3. STRATEGY ADOPTED:  Strengthening Team Effort, inculcated reflective practices and designed ICT enabled learning environment; 4. SCHOOL INNOVATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Inculcation of ICT based learning through means of TV (purchased by the staff own expenses), enabled the teacher to search various subject contents from ‘Internet and YouTube’ and later displayed the same through TV in a planned manner. This has enhanced the academic performance as : Above outputs encourages us to replicate the process in same cluster as well as other 17 schools (10 Primary and 7 Middle Schools) with similar strategy across 35 clusters. 8. CONCLUSIONS Quality education will certainly contribute in increasing the state human development index over a period of time. Enabling the teaching staff to inculcated reflective practices and extends handholding support as a mentor for guiding, inspiring and enabling team members towards accomplishment of objective is perhaps the probable way by which changes can be inculcated and made sustainable.

Background: A study conducted in the Kajiado Central District of Kenya in 2006 showed that there was a high dropout rate among primary schoolgoing children and that their academic performance was poor. The Dupoto-e-Maa education project was implemented in 2007 to address issues related to drop out rate and academic performance. Objectives: The evaluation therefore investigated the extent to which the project had influenced dropout rate and academic performance in the public primary schools in Kajiado Central District. Method: The evaluation adopted a mixed methods approach: cross-sectional survey and case study designs. The benefit of the approach is the richness of information obtained through triangulation. The respondents included head teachers, school management committees, teachers, pupils, quality assurance and standards officer and project staff. A sample size of 183 respondents was selected using purposive sampling and stratified random sampling procedures. Head teachers of the sampled schools participated as key informants. The instruments of data collection included questionnaires, an interview guide, a document analysis guide, a focus group discussion guide and an observation guide. Results: The findings indicate that the Dupoto-e-Maa education project had influenced dropout rates. The direction of the findings seems to suggest that academic performance trends are unpredictable since fluctuations are evident, though the programme could have encountered some challenges that may have limited its achievement on this variable. Conclusion: The study recommended that there is need to increase the number of nongovernmental organisations modelled around the Dupoto-e-Maa education project so as to reduce dropout rate and improve pupil academic performance. The findings could also inform government policy in terms of recruitment and placement of teachers in schools in arid and semi-arid lands. Project funding could be increased to improve visibility and sustainability of project activities.
