>A back to school getting to know you activity

Okay now this is a cool idea. Much better than the old “go around the class and tell us about yourself” way of doing things. Being a shy kid I never knew what to say, but I probably would’ve had no problem communicating myself through something like this.

Shake Up Learning

Shake Up Learning in your classroom today!

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE)

January 30, 2020 by Kasey Bell

Engage your students with this awesome Fake Instagram Template in Google Slides from Carly Black.

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE)

I knew one of our Google-loving listeners would create one for Google Slides.

Carly Black to the rescue!! Carly not only created the template, but she has also implemented it in her classroom and shares her story in the guest post below.

Carly was also featured in an “On-Air” Coaching episode of the Shake Up Learning Show . It’s my favorite coaching episode!

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE) by @TeachMomRepeat

Guest Post by Carly Black

Leveraging social media to teach students has been a huge win for me in the classroom. Several teachers recently reported overhearing my morning students sharing with afternoon students, “Mrs. Black let us use Snapchat today! Seriously! Our assignment was on Snapchat!” Of course, they are referring to the day I taught them how to create booksnaps . I’m forever grateful that Tara Martin taught us all how to annotate text through social media.

Imagine your mini-lesson on text annotation: you share a slide presentation walking students through the steps and examples. There are a few handouts and some notes to take. Students watch you annotate over the document camera then try it on their own in a printed story with highlighters and some color pens.

Does this sound familiar? Sure it’s a visually appealing slide show, and maybe the passages are funny, but imagine telling the kids they need cell phones today. Then add they are going to use Snapchat. It brings a whole new dynamic! They sit up and listen.

Finding ways to bring their world into the classroom for the sneaky purposes of learning will get you to that end goal every time. Of course, there was that one activity, a fake Facebook profile of a book character, that fell flat. Upon receiving the handout, a student quickly shared that they didn’t know what Facebook looked like because it was “for old people.” While I didn’t feel that old, I also realized that my lesson needed an upgrade.

This experience also made me jump into more of what the “kids are doing these days.” I had been hesitant to join social media beyond Facebook at the time. But once I joined Twitter and Instagram, a world of collaboration with teachers around the world came into view. I had no idea teachers were sharing and collaborating over social media.

Lisa talked about a fake Instagram template she had created in Keynote but hadn’t figured out how to make it in Google Slides. The timing was perfect; I had been mulling over this exact idea for an upcoming class project that students could create in order to share their independent reading. After taking a look at Lisa’s example, it gave me the idea I needed to make it happen.

Storytelling with Fake Instagram

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE)

Instagram is all about telling stories. I wanted to leverage this purpose and show students how they could share their independent reading through an Instagram account. Students start by choosing the protagonist or antagonist. Inventing a profile for this character requires thinking about what that character might have to say about themself. Finish it off with a convincing profile photo, write an on-brand tagline, add a few hashtags, and include the character’s name with a handle.

When looking at an Instagram profile, there are story circles and then squares of images that represent a reverse-chronological timeline. The profile page is the first page of the fake Instagram slide deck. It includes biographical information and nine squares to represent nine of the most important events.

As guidelines for the nine images, I thought it would help students to think through the plotline. Include two from the exposition; this should show who the characters are and the setting of their story. The next four should include the inciting incident, which introduces the conflict and then three of the most important scenes from the rising action. Identify the climax and one event, each from falling action and the resolution.

Once students have mapped out their stories based on these key points, they choose images to represent them. With the built-in Unsplash add-on, inserting photos is super easy. Students can also stage their own photos if they want a specific look.

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE)

Images are only one part of this project. Students also need to write captions and relevant comments. They create handles for other characters and comment with the character’s voice demonstrating further analysis of the story. Don’t forget the hashtags! These are another thoughtful way to incorporate story elements.

Fake Instagram Template with Google Slides (FREE)

This project was a big hit! The kids enjoyed the social media aspect and being creative with the handles and hashtags. The laughter was at high volume the day we worked on these in class. Even though it was an independent project, many asked neighbors or shared their creative, funny comments.

Fake Instagram Activity in Other Subjects

This activity isn’t just for language arts.

I could see math teachers using this for specific concepts like order of operations. Each step could be represented by an image, and the caption with comments could address the math personified.

Science teachers could use a fake Instagram account to show the stages or steps in an experiment.

Both subjects, or any subject really, could ask students to research a famous person within their field. The fake Instagram account could share their accomplishments and contributions to the field of study.

If this sounds like a project you’d like to try out in your classroom, make a copy of your own fake Instagram template  and give it a go. We would love to see what your students create or hear how the project worked for you. You can find me on Twitter and Instagram at TeachMomRepeat.

Instagram as an educational tool for college students.

Instagram as an Educational Tool for Students

Instagram is the most important social network for American teens, and the number of registered youth is growing rapidly. While most teens use Instagram for posting their photos and videos, it’s not just about your selfies, food and fitness photos, and likes/reposts.

As the Internet makes the educational process more interesting than ever, teachers should jump at the opportunity to get the most out of this progress. Thus, it’s a great idea to start using social networks in the classroom.

Instagram can become a great educational tool that makes the educational process unique, interesting, and insightful.

If you want to develop (or improve) some useful skills, start using Instagram right now.

Here comes a list of reasons why using Instagram is beneficial:

Develop creativity  Most Instagram users want to surprise their audience with great images, so they start making different photos, editing them, and publishing on the web. If you use Instagram, you might notice that there are many spammy photos. However, people do their best to become unique, and it helps to develop creativity.

Become tech-savvy. The Internet has become a main source of information and the best communication tool. It gives so many opportunity to tech-savvy users that it’s nearly impossible to stop using it. Thus, students should learn how to be tech-savvy, and using social networks is a way to become a proficient user as well.

Learn from gurus. Nowadays most gurus in all niches have their accounts on Instagram. They share not only personal photos but their stories and tips as well. Thus, students can find a person who is a source of inspiration and start following this profile.

Online studying. Students prefer interesting ways of studying, and Instagram helps to make the educational process unique. Teachers can give creative assignments that can be evaluated via Instagram (attending galleries, creating photo essays, making videos, etc.). Once a home assignment is done, ask a student to tag a teacher to get a mark.

Team building. No matter how big your group is, you can create a class account where all educational moments would be represented. Make photos, share tasks, write comments and keep in touch with your class even when you are on holidays. It helps to build a strong team as it shows group’s membership.

Does the number of followers matter?

Most Instagram users want to get more and more followers. They even start cheating to attract more readers, but it won’t work.

Obviously, the more followers you have, the more likely your content will be shared. However, quantity is over quantity, so having just the number is not enough. People should be interested in what you’re publishing. So, you need to attract relevant followers only.

Once you decided it’s high time to increase the number of likes on your profile, find out 5 easy ways to boost your followers on Instagram.

The Best Accounts to Follow

Finding inspiration on Instagram is a great thing to do. If you want to get motivation, you can search for images, using relevant hashtags (#students, #student_life, #college, etc.), but don’t forget to follow those accounts that inspire you the most. Here are top 3 accounts that can give you a motivation boost.

@coryrichard  a National Geographic photographer and adventurer who loves traveling, filming, and climbing. His photos show the beauty of our world and, therefore, inspire.

reasons to follow: see the world, get inspiration.

@edutopia – if you want to get an insight or find out interesting tips on learning, you need to start following this account. It is useful for both students and teachers.

reasons to follow: boost motivation, life hacks, useful tips.

@amnh – even if you believe that you know almost everything about history, you need to start following the official Instagram page of the American Museum of Natural History.

reasons to follow: learn history, discover interesting facts and things about the history.

Living in the digital era, teachers and students cannot stop technological progress, and being in a trend is important. Next time you log in your Instagram account, look for insights on the web to broaden your mind. The educational process should be interesting, funny, and motivational, so don’t miss a chance to start learning better.

P.S. Although most people have watched this video parody about typical Instagram users , it’s still funny. Enjoy and keep in mind that Instagram is much more than mediocre photos people post daily.

instagram assignment for students

Everybody has their go-to social media platform when they want to share something with the world. So where do millennials currently go? According to a Facebook survey of 13-24 year olds in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the UK and the US, they have been quietly fleeing popular Facebook for Instagram . (They aren’t getting all that far from it since Facebook actually acquired Instagram in 2012, but far enough.) In the past five years, Instagram has become the fastest growing major social network, no doubt because of its quickly growing millennial army. Why Instagram? Partially because millennials don’t want to share Facebook or Twitter with their parents–those people are seriously embarrassing! But also because this generation has grown up in a world of constant connectivity, bombarded with messages since they visited their first website. Images are a fast way to pass along a message that almost instantly connects the user to a feeling, and many brands have found they can successfully connect these feelings to their product or service. Which gives new meaning to the adage: people may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel. So if a picture really is worth a 1,000 words, students have found a way to adapt to our world’s rapid fire messaging pace and absorb more information at once than any generation before. With more than 30 billion pictures shared, Instagram is the happening place for the quick and direct visual literacy the current generation enjoys.

What does this mean for teachers?

It means you should definitely check out this platform as a way to engage students because they might just be pretty excited about it and really pay attention (plus it will make you look totally cool).  Instagram is an excellent choice to incorporate into your lesson plans, and if you choose to do so, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Of course you’ll need to lay down some basic ground rules about appropriateness and consequences, but hopefully the idea will be fun enough for all involved that they won’t want to be excluded. This is an excellent way to incorporate lessons on Digital Citizenship (see this great post for more on that).
  • It might be best to create a classroom Instagram account that you set to “private” so you can monitor posts and vette all potential followers.
  • Definitely check out your school’s technology policies before you begin.

Knowing that (unfortunately) not every classroom has the same access to devices and wifi yet, here are eight ideas to help get your brain fired up on what could work best for where you are:

1. Pop Quiz

Hold “Instagram quizzes” during class. Designate team captains willing to use their smartphone/Instagram account for their team (this will help include anyone in class who might not have either one of these). The teams must work together for answers (challenge them to do so without speaking) to comment on a picture or multiple pictures you post to Instagram with one of the following:

  • Ask a question about the picture and how it relates to what you are studying; points rewarded for using key vocabulary and/or concepts discussed.
  • Reveal just a piece of a picture or an extreme closeup and ask teams to identify what it is and why you chose it.
  • As admin on the account, you can hold all comments until the end of class to ensure no cheating between teams.

2.Where In the World?

Host a photo campaign asking your students to post Instagram images to their own accounts while they’re out in the world that tie into what you are studying. Make sure they include the hashtag you create to ensure your search brings it up. Selfies can be encouraged for authenticity.

  • Bonus Tip: To keep almost real-time track of this hashtag, enter the following into your favorite feed reader to follow new posts easily: http://instagr.am/tags/[hashtag name]/feed/recent.rss ( [hashtag name] is the name of the hashtag without the leading #).

3. Student of the Week

Invite students to alternate “taking over” your classroom Instagram account and sharing photos from their daily lives. Encourage all students to participate by liking and commenting.

4. What Would Honest Abe Say?

Have students create pretend Instagram posts from famous historical figures on the class account – what would Abe Lincoln post if he’d had Instagram in his day?

Have students post a photo of something they see every day on the way to school – such as an old house or an interesting tree – and then have them choose someone else’s photo for a creative writing assignment.

6. Showcase Showdown

Post pictures of student work throughout the year, from the first assignment to the last, to show them (and their parents) their progress.

7. Schoolwide School Pride

Instagram doesn’t have to be kept within just one classroom. Hold a photo contest throughout the year that challenges students to show their school pride. From group events to individual efforts, students can submit photos to you via email or text to be posted to Instagram showing how they represent and celebrate their school. At the end of the year, a select group of teachers will judge the top three photos to be included in the school yearbook.

8. Join an Instagram Community

Hashtags and weekly photo challenges keep Instagram going. Use the “Discover” feature to find trending or popular hashtags, and join the fun to push the boundaries outside of traditional classroom walls:

  • Head outside to collect materials to make a #MondayMandala nature collage.
  • Get down close to capture a #MobileMacro view of the world then head back into the classroom to find out more about what you’ve discovered.

We encourage you to experiment and find what works best for your students and classroom, then share it with us below in the comments. Have any additional Instagram projects you’ve completed, additional ideas for Instagram learning fun or favorite education hashtags you follow on this platform? We’d love to hear more! Teaching the Public Relations Class with Freberg’s PR Textbook, Discovering Public Relations

Karen Freberg ‘s PR textbook, Discovering Public Relations: An Introduction to Creative and Strategic Practices , has been called a substantial advancement in public relations education (see Gallicano, 2021 ). It was published in time for the 2020-2021 academic year. But this semester is the first chance I’ve had to incorporate it into my Public Relations class. In the below post, I’ll discuss how I’m incorporating this textbook and share my new Public Relations Principles syllabus.

I had the privileged of writing the ancillary materials for this textbook, including a syllabus, and discussion questions and activities and assignments for each chapter.  You can get your hands on those materials from Sage when adopting the textbook. So rather than sharing specific assignments, below I share three ways that I’ve used this textbook to update my class.

Teaching Paid Social Media and Influencer Marketing with the Stukent Mimic Social Simulator (Part 2 of 2)

Teaching Paid Social Media and Influencer Marketing with the Stukent Mimic Social Simulator (Part 2 of 2)

This is post 2 in a two-part series about teaching paid social media with Stukent Mimic Social. Before reading this post, I encourage you to read post 1, which was published on the Stukent website .

Use Stukent Mimic Social to Teach Paid Social Media with this Assignment

In the first post in this two-part series, I introduced the Stukent Mimic Social simulator, which is a classroom simulator for teaching paid social media. In that post, I covered what the simulator is, the learning objectives I had for it, and how the simulator works.

In this post, I discuss how I integrated the Mimic Social simulator into my class. I also provide an overview of the assignment that accompanied the simulator. A copy of the assignment is provided as well.

Setting Up the Mimic Social Simulator: Considerations

Before we discuss how I integrated Mimic Social into my class and the assignment itself, I should preface with a few notes. When professors set up the Mimic Social simulator for their students, they choose the number of rounds they want their students to complete. Options range from 2 rounds to 24. I opted for 16 rounds given the time we had to commit to the assignment and my sense of how many repetitions would be necessary for students to begin to build mastery.

Professors can also decide to delay the opening of rounds such that students have to wait until certain preset dates to access each round (see image below). This prevents students from rushing ahead. I did not choose this option.

Mimic Social simulator setting up rounds

How I Teach Paid Social Media with the Stukent Mimic Social Simulator

I assigned the Stukent Mimic Social simulator as the final assignment in my fall 2020 social media class. Since the assignment was going to bring together many things the students had learned over the course of the semester (see my learning goals for the simulator in my first post), much of the semester served as a preparation for this final task. Assigning Mimic Social as the final assignment was like sending students out into the (simulated) real world after doing my very best to train them throughout the semester.

I taught this class online, with all but the two lectures noted below, done synchronously on Zoom.

To prepare my students for success with Stukent’s social media simulator, I introduced them to paid social media. First, I had my students complete The Essential Guide to Digital Marketing with Facebook , part of the Facebook Business educational resources . I provided two accompanying lectures on how social media advertising works, focusing on Facebook advertising.

In a third lecture, I went over the assignment and provided a lecture to 1) get students up to speed on what Stukent is and how it works, and 2) to connect the Stukent assignment to things students had learned in class – such as audience targeting and the marketing funnel – and to things they had learned through the Facebook Essentials Guide – such as split testing ads. After the third lecture, students began the simulator, using most of the class time to do the simulator. I prepared brief per-recorded lectures for them to watch before working on the simulator and made myself available for chat or video call to any student who might have questions. I liked this approach because students could work at their own pace from home while turning to me with any questions they may have.

In a brief fourth lecture, I covered how influencer marketing works in Mimic Social, which begins in the simulator in round 7. This lecture was also per-recorded and students were to watch it before working on Stukent for that day.

The Mimic Social Simulator Assignment

As I noted above, the Mimic Social simulator was the final assignment in my class. But I assigned it in two parts and students began working with the simulator during week 11 of a fifteen-week semester. The first part simply asked students to complete rounds 1 through 6 before the end of week 13 of the semester. For the analysis rounds 2 and 4, students were to answer the questions provided. For round 6, students were to answer all of the questions in the question section except for the last question that asked “What types of content did you use for this round? Why?” Instead of that question, I had students describe how they planned to use what they learned so far to complete the rest of the simulator. Part 1 served as a check in to so that I knew students were engaging with the materials during the same time that I was talking about the topic during the semester. But my major motivation for having this deadline was to head off any issues before finals week. If students were having troubles getting signed up for our class on Stukent, were having technical troubles or were having trouble understanding Stukent and how to succeed at it, I could address these issues during the semester and not at the last minute during finals week. After students were given 2 class periods to work on the simulator with the hopes of completing all of part 1, my class shifted to focusing on other topics.

Part 2 of the assignment was due during finals week. This gave students time between the end of week 13 and finals week to schedule the simulator into their schedules rather than rushing to complete it during finals. Part two asked students to complete rounds 7 through 16. Students did not need to answer the questions section of the analysis rounds. Rather, students were tasked with creating a report to the chief marketing officer of Buhi. As you’ll recall in the first post in this series, the simulator begins with a welcome message from the CMO, which includes a list of goals the student is to achieve by the end of the simulator. Students had the option of writing this as a report or of creating a presentation that they recorded and turned into me. Whichever option they chose, students were tasked with addressing the below questions in their final report and providing visual evidence (screen captures) from their analytics to support their claims:

  • What goals did Buhi give you?
  • Provide a general overview of the target market for Buhi.
  • What audience(s) – of the ones available to you – did you choose to target and why?
  • What audiences did you have the most success with? Why do you think that is? (hint: In both Post Analytics and Post history you can filter by audience name).
  • Looking over Post Analytics: What social media platforms worked best for you in terms of awareness, engagements, and revenue? Show evidence.
  • What dates/times worked best for each platform? How often?
  • What types of posts (e.g., articles, people indoor with products, image no product, memes) on your top 3 platforms worked best in generating awareness, engagement, revenue?
  • Looking through your post history: What were your tops posts for: awareness, engagement, revenue?
  • What types of influencers did you have the most success with? What social media platforms performed best with your influencers in terms of awareness, engagements, and revenue?
  • What types of influencer strategies (e.g., brand ambassador, takeovers, etc.) worked best? Why do you think that is?
  • Looking over your early performance (the first few weeks), your middle performance, and your final performance (the last few weeks), in what ways did you improve? In what ways, if any, did you not improve?
  • What were your final results in terms of total awareness, engagement, and revenue?
  • How well did you meet each of the goals Buhi gave you? (see the goals Buhi gave you below)
  • What was your ranking in the class (see course ranking)?
  • What did you learn from this experience?
  • What were your areas of strengths? What areas would you like to improve upon?
  • Imagine you were leaving this company and going to train the next person to fulfill your position. What advice would you give that person?
  • Please feel free to share any final thoughts.

See the full assignment below or on SlideShare here .

Evaluating Student Success in Mimic Social

At the end of the simulation, each student was ranked by revenue along with the following metrics: budget spent, customer satisfaction, total posts, total promoted posts, total impressions, total engagements, total clicks, and total conversions (see image below). There are also exportable reports for: a summary of all data, post details, and influencer summaries. This data will let you dive even further into your students’ efforts.

instagram assignment for students

Students were graded based on two factors (see the assignment for details ). The first, which accounted for 90% of a students’ grade, was based on the final report. This included clarity of communication, how thoroughly the questions for the final report were addressed, how successful the student was in achieving Buhi’s goals, and a thoughtful reflection on their performance and what they learned. The last 10% of their grade came from their course ranking. That is, how well the student did in terms of revenue generated when compared to their peers. The person who ranked #1 earned 10% extra credit on their grade, the #2 ranking student earned 5% extra credit, the #3 ranking person earned full credit and each person thereafter received 2% off their grade on down to 0% of the 10% possible. I used a similar ranking system when I taught the Mimic Intro simulator. While it comes with some drawbacks, as some students may complain that they have no control over how their peers perform, it also seems to light a fire under students and gets them motivated to complete. I remind students that in business they will be competing with others for customers, donors, and the like.

Student feedback on the simulator was overall very positive.

Several students cited that it was their favorite project of the semester when we discussed what we learned in the class on the last day of classes. I got the sense that the simulator helped several students build push themselves out of their comfort zone and when they found success, it built their confidence. I messaged with Anna Keys, one of my students, about the simulator. She told me: “The Stukent Mimic Simulator provided me with tools that transferred seamlessly into real life social media advertising. I was able to learn about the process of targeting ads to specific ‘personas,’ which was something I struggled with prior to completing the simulation. I was also able to gain a much deeper understanding of the way in which money should be allocated during a campaign. I really appreciated that I received feedback after each round so that I could adjust my work to be the best it could be.”

In closing, I am pleased with how the Mimic Social simulator went. It helped bolster several key learning goals and provided students with hands-on experience with paid social media and influencer marketing that I could not otherwise provide them in class. The fact that students were able to do the simulator from home during an online class made for an easy integration of the simulator into what was a challenging fall 2020 semester due to the pandemic. Here’s to hoping we will be back in person for fall 2021. Either way, I plan on doing this assignment again this fall.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to read the first post in this series on the Stukent Blog !

If you’ve taught the Stukent Mimic Social in your class, I’d love to hear about your experience. Please feel free to drop a comment below.

Be well, Matt

Podcasts on Instagram? Yes! Here’s How to Post Audio on Instagram Using Headliner.app

As fellow podcast lovers know, we live in a golden age of audio. But what if you want to post audio on a visual platform like Instagram or Twitter? You’ll need visuals, of course.  That’s what Headliner.app does – it makes ‘audiograms’ so they can be published on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and more. In the below, I explain how to use the Headliner.app to create a podcast to post on social media sites like Instagram TV (IGTV) . I provide a lab guide with step-by-step instructions for creating an audiogram that can be shared with your students. I also provide links to the audiograms my students made in my social media class [ download social media class syllabus | All posts about this class ].

Why Post Audio to Instagram?

In my case, it was a problem and a solution born from the pandemic.

In fall 2019, I challenged the students in my social media class to experiment with Instagram TV (IGTV) . I wanted my students doing more with video. So the students started a show called ShepShow. It was a mix of humorous person-on-the-street interviews, more serious interviews with alum, and testimonials about student life. In fall 2020 amid COVID, the idea of students walking campus with a microphone just wasn’t going to work. So, I decided to turn season 2 of ShepShow into an audio-only program; a mini podcast that would be recorded over Zoom while students were safely apart.

This presented a problem: How to get an audio-only show on a visual platform like Instagram?

What is Headliner.app and Why Should I Use it to Get a Podcast on IGTV?

At first, I thought that we would create the audio and then turn it into a video using Adobe Rush or some other editing tool. Then, I did what any educator would do: I got on Google, searched around, and found Headliner. I signed up for a free account and  was able to create my first audiogram on Headliner in just a few minutes.

An audiogram is essentially audio wrapped in a still image, with the image aspect ratio optimized for posting on social media. A waveform – a real-time visual representation of the audio – can be placed over the image. As you can imagine, Headliner.app is particularly great for taking a podcast and posting it on YouTube, as many podcasters do to leverage YouTube’s massive audience and monetization features. But Headliner’s s array of features, including audio transcription, make it a versatile tool for posting audio on any social network (See a list of Headliner.app features ).

Teaching Students to Create an IGTV Podcast using Headliner’s Audiograms

I wrote a detailed look at the IGTV assignment in my social media class from Fall 2019. That post provides more context regarding why my students are creating content for our department’s Instagram page ( @ShepComm ) and other social media platforms. The IGTV assignment is part of a larger semester-long assignment my students complete in my social media class whereby they take on the social media for our department (I discuss the semester-long project in detail here , or you can learn about it in my 2019 book, Teach Social Media: A Plan for Creating a Course Your Students Will Love ).

IGTV in the College Classroom

During this past semester (Fall 2020), I put one student group in charge of ShepShow, our IGTV show. While IGTV is also its own app , it is also part of Instagram. Thus, our ShepShow episodes are uploaded and accessible through the department’s @ShepComm Instagram page.

Here are the steps my students used to create audiograms and post them to Instagram. The same could be done for other social networks.

  • Record over Zoom – Get everyone who will be participating in the audio together on a Zoom call. See Zoom’s audio recording guide for how to record the call. If you prefer, you can even choose a setting to record separate audio files for each person who speaks for editing purposes. When everyone’s ready, record the call.
  • Edit the Audio – Once the audio file is recorded on Zoom (or multiple audio files if you recorded one for each person who speaks), it is downloaded to the computer of the person who set up the recording. The file can then be edited in audio editing software such as Audacity or Adobe Audition . Once complete, the audio can be exported (e.g., as an MP3) so it can be uploaded into Headliner.
  • IGTV Thumbnail – The visual aspect of the audiogram is a still image, or thumbnail. It is what people will see when they load the IGTV episode to listen to it. This visual will need to be created before creating the audiogram.
  • Create a Headliner Account – Head over to Headliner . A free account is all you will need for this project.
  • Create the Audiogram using Headliner – Discussed in detail below.
  • Write the Episode Title and Description – Every episode on IGTV needs a title and description. Use those social media writing skills, keeping in mind best practices such as search, tagging accounts and hashtags.
  • Publish on IGTV – Instagram provides easy-to-follow instructions for uploading video to IGTV directly from a computer .

How to Create a Headliner Audiogram

headliner-IGTV-podcast-audiogram

Using Headliner.app is pretty straightforward as the app offers step-by-step instructions for creating audiograms. However, there are a number of different options available. We want to make sure that the correct options are chosen so that our audiogram works with IGTV. Most importantly, the IGTV video dimension requirements must be followed (see IGTV video requirements ). Not to worry, in the below-linked lab guide, I have provided instructions showing which video dimension to pick for IGTV.  Click the link below for the step-by-step instructions I share with my students.  These isntructions teach students how to create an IGTV-ready audiogram in Headliner.

  • Turning an Audio File into an IGTV Episode Lab Guide.

That’s it! Now you have audio that can be uploaded to Instagram TV (or, elsewhere) for your IGTV podcast or other audio project.

To see season 2 of ShepShow and some of my students’ audiograms, check out our Instagram TV channel, and the 7 episodes from Season 2 .

Making season 2 of ShepShow a mini-podcast rather than a video season brought down the stress levels for the students and I during a very stressful semester. Most importantly, it was the right move from a health and standpoint. The students completed this project socially distanced from the safety of home. Here are a few final thoughts before you jump in:

  • Audio might not be quite as engaging as video. We live in a visual world and Instagram is a very visual platform. So metrics numbers may be down. Captivating thumbnails and optimized titles and descriptions can help.
  • Audiograms can be easily created for other social platforms, so the audio can be shared on YouTube and other platforms, too.
  • Already have a podcast? Audiograms are a great way to get snippets of your show onto platfroms for your audience to snack on.
  • Keep in mind the audio length requirements for IGTV. The video must be shorter than 10 minutes for regular Instagram users.
  • IGTV thumbnails continued to be a bit of an issue this season. Some came out great in the channel preview, while others didn’t, despite the team using the same Canva template for each. I need to find a solution to this.
  • When recording on Zoom, I suggest, whenever possible, using better quality microphones and ensuring that all members are using fast Internet connections to avoid any audio issues in recording. This was not always available to our students, given the pandemic, and a few minor issues came up in our finished episodes.
  • Once the audiogram is created, be sure to listen to the complete episode all the way through before publishing it. If step 3 in the lab guide is not followed correctly, then the full audio might be cut off.

I hope you found this post an interesting twist on a social media assignment. If you try this project, please share your social media audiograms in the comments below!

Teach Social Media Analytics with Keyhole Hashtag Analytics Software: Activity Included

Teach Social Media Analytics with Keyhole Hashtag Analytics Software: Activity Included

Teaching social media analytics skills with keyhole hashtag analytics software.

This is the second post in a two-part series about using Keyhole hashtag analytics software to teach social media analytics to university students. In this post, we will explore social media metrics on Twitter and Instagram, social media account optimization, and social listening. I include a metrics tracking spreadsheet that my students use and instructions for completing the tasks assigned in the spreadsheet.

If you have not read the first post in this series about the social media analytics class activity and the social media audit assignment , I suggest doing so before proceeding.

Teaching Social Media Analytics Skills: Monitoring Metrics, Posting Schedule Optimization, and Social media Listening

In the second half of the semester, students in my COMM 322 Social Media class [ all posts related to my social media class] learn to track metrics relevant to their class client, our department’s social media.  This is part of a semester-long project where my class takes on a class client; a topic discussed in greater detail in my book Teach Social Media and, to a lesser extent, in this blog post .

This year, we are focusing on Twitter, Instagram and IGTV (through the Instagram app).

There are 3 areas of focus that students are learning:

  • Social media account metrics
  • Social media account optimization
  • Social media listening

Let’s discuss each in turn.  Note that this blog post is an update and expansion to previous posts which have discussed the use of Meltwater social intelligence software and Microsoft Social Engagement software for similar knowledge and skills.

In this post, we will be using an updated spreadsheet designed for tracking social media account metrics, social media optimization, and social listening . It is designed to work with Keyhole.co software. You will also see links to a video and a lab guide in the spreadsheet, which will be discussed below. I encourage you to load the spreadsheet for reference. Note: The spreadsheet is a modified version of a metrics tracking spreadsheet originally developed by Jeremy Floyd .

Teach Social Media Analytics Part 1: Social Media Account Metrics

To start, students set up their benchmarks and KPIs in the metrics goals tab for the account they are assigned to track.  Each team in class is assigned a different social media account that they are in charge of.  Each group devises their own KPIs. Benchmarks can be taken from the current data by looking at the previous week’s content, or by averaging the weekly metrics from a previous set of time, such as the previous 4 weeks.

Once set up, they begin tracking in the reporting tab of the metrics spreadsheet. There, you will see several preset metrics – the same metrics that were in the metrics goals tab. For Twitter and Instagram, these are based on the data available at the top the main dashboard page for social media account analytics in the Keyhole software (see the side-by-side images below for Twitter and Instagram). As you can see, we are having way more success with Instagram engagement than Twitter for our audience.

These metrics are tracked weekly starting with week 9 of the semester. You can add additional metrics to the spreadsheet, of course, diving further into the rich data that Keyhole provides about your account (see this PDF I generated of some of the additional data Keyhole provides) .

keyhole-social-media-account-analytics-dashboard

Teach Social Media Analytics Part 2: Social Media Account Optimization

Perhaps the coolest thing about Keyhole, in my opinion, is the data it provides that can be used to help optimize your social media posts to increase the likelihood of their success in terms of reach and engagement.

In Keyhole, under social media account analytics, users can click on the optimization tab. There, a user will see the best time to post, the optimal post length, the top hashtags by engagement, the optimal number of hashtags and the average engagements by day.

Because everything is online this semester due to COVID-19: To prepare students for this task, I created a Loom video overview teaching students how to conduct optimization tracking using the metrics spreadsheet.

Having students sort through this data can help them make choices on when they want to publish future content and how they can optimize it for length and hashtags.  See the example of our department Instagram page below.

Students track this data every week in the appropriate optimization tracking tab in the metrics spreadsheet.

Teach Social Media Analytics Part 3: Social Media Listening

Lastly, students use Keyhole to conduct social media listening. I have my students monitor the conversation around our communication department. We set up a social listening & campaign tracking search to do this, entering keywords (e.g., search terms or hashtags) relevant to our brand. Of course, I could also expand the listening to the wider Shepherd University community in a separate social listening & campaign tracking search.  I could also have them track competitors, which they do in the social media audit assignment discussed in the first post in this series.

For our current purposes, the students are just focused on the conversation around our department.

Because everything is online this semester due to COVID-19: I created this lab guide to show students how to gather and analyze the social listening data for the metrics spreadsheet. The data is entered into the social listening tab in the spreadsheet. The final question asks in the tab asks them to analyze the key takeaways from the social listening for each week.

When you look at the lab guide, you will note instructions towards the top of the lab guide under “getting started” about how to set up a new social listening & campaign tracker. My original intention was to have each team set up their own tracker, but I decided instead to create one tracker in class with input from students to save time. Thus, as I noted above, I already created the tracker we use in this assignment and thus this my students skip this step.

To help you see some of the data that can be tracked with a social listening & campaign tracking search in Keyhole , I am providing a  public social listening tracker that I created of some of the data that Keyhole provides for a search our class set up.  (Note: This link may not work in the future if the tracker is deleted. But I am sharing it for temporary use).

Taken together, this social media metrics spreadsheet assignment gives students hands-on experience learning to read and interpret social media analytics data using industry software.

In this post and the previous post in this series, I have shared how I have incorporated the Keyhole hashtag tracking software in my social media class across 3 different tasks: 1) The social media analytics class activity – which introduces students to social media metrics, 2) the social media audit – where students incorporate what they are learning to evaluate our client and a competitor using the Keyhole software, and 3) the social media metrics spreadsheet assignment – where students track social media metrics, learn about post optimization by analyzing account metrics, and engage in social media listening.

I have taught these skills using different software over the last few years. Every social media analytics software package comes with different features. Although this blog post discusses topics that have covered on this blog in the past, I hope that this update provides a fresh look at how these skills can be taught with a different social media analytics product. One major update to the the social media metrics spreadsheet assignment is the improved opportunity to teach optimization versus what I was able to do with other software in the past. I am hopeful that it will translate to better learning outcomes for students.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this post.

If you have used Keyhole before and have tips, activities, or assignments, please share them in the comments below.

The Social Media Analytics Class Activity: Why?

Having a social media analytics class activity is vital to teaching our students social media analytics, including account analytics and social listening. But, as educators, getting our hands on social media analytics software in the classroom is an increasing challenge.

This post and the one that will follow it will discuss the new social media software I am using, Keyhole.co. It discusses how to use Keyhole.co hashtag analytics software to teach analytics and social listening skills (note: The name is a bit misleading. Keyhole does much more than hashtag analytics). In the first post in this series, I offer a beginner’s social media activity for using Keyhole along with step-by-step instructions for doing so.I also offer a social media audit assignment that is designed to be used with the Keyhole software.

In the second post , I offer a spreadsheet that students can use to track metrics from Keyhole.co related to social media account metrics on Twitter and Instagram, identify social media account optimization opportunities, and engage in social listening. I also provide instruction for how to complete these tasks.

Choosing Social Media Analytics Software: What to Consider

Over the last few years, several social media analytics companies generously offered university classrooms free access to their software. However, with the closure of the Meltwater university program and the discontinuation of Microsoft Social Engagement , those options have become limited. Professors have had to search for affordable solutions during a time of economic uncertainty in academia.

So I posed a question to the always-awesome Social Media Professors Community Facebook Group this past summer seeking suggestions of paid social media analytics software.   A few tools were suggested (thank you so much for the input!) all with distinct advantages and limitations. I set up interviews and software demos with several companies to learn about their features and costs.

Taking into consideration many factors including the needs of my classes, the features of the software, and pricing, we decided to go with Keyhole.co . However, I encourage you to do your research, set up software demos or try free trials, and find what works best for you and your students.

While each company in the social media analytics space prices differently, some common variables that impact pricing are:

10 Surprising Ways to Use Instagram in the Classroom

Legitimate excuses for your Insta-addiction.

instagram assignment for students

It’s not just the tweens and teens that are addicted to Instagram, it’s the teachers too! So instead of scrolling through your celebrity crush’s feed, we’ve rounded up some legitimate, educational ways you can use Instagram in the classroom.

Of course, it’s important to protect students’ privacy, especially when using a public channel like Instagram. If you’re interested in trying any of the ideas below, we recommend creating a classroom account that you set to “private” and carefully vetting any potential followers. You might also try adapting our suggestions to an educational social media platform such as Edmodo . Finally, be sure to check your school’s technology policies before you begin.

OK, disclaimer over! Here are 10 awesome ways you can use Instagram in the classroom.

1. Showcase Student Work

Snap pictures of students’ artwork and other special projects to share on a private Instagram account only accessible to families and others in your school community.

10. Document Student Progress

Snap photos of students’ writing at the beginning and the end of the year. Order inexpensive prints from sites like Social Print Studio , to show your students their progress and provide an end-of-year gift!

Ways to Use Instagram to Enrich Your Classroom

Janelle cox.

  • November 11, 2019

Instagram logo

You most likely have a Facebook or Twitter account, but do you have an Instagram account ? Instagram is said to be the world’s largest teachers’ lounge, mainly because you have access to thousands of teaching ideas, from pictures of creative bulletin boards to photos of how to organize your classroom, you can find anything on Instagram. Instagram is a great way to help you grow your professional network, too. It also can help improve your  technology in the classroom teaching skills . Here are a few effective ways that you can use Instagram to enrich your classroom.

Extend Your Learning Through Educational Hashtags

Teachers are lifelong learners, and a simple way to extend your learning is through hashtags. Hashtags are an easy way to find relevant information related to education. You can search for posts, people, places, and even tags (general or specific information). When you search a hashtag, pictures that have been tagged with that specific topic will come up under your search bar. For example, a popular hashtag among teachers is #teachersofinstagram. Whether you are looking for classroom lesson plan ideas or just want to see photos of seating arrangements for your classroom, you can find it by simply searching the hashtag. Here are a few more popular hashtags teachers love:

  • #classroomorganization
  • #instagramteachers
  • #classroomideas
  • #classroommanagement
  • #teacherinspiration
  • #teacherspayteachers

Share Student Work

Another effective way teachers can use Instagram is to share their ideas. That amazing lesson plan on mammals that you came up can be shared with the world with just a tap of your finger. Now teachers from across the world can see your amazing ideas and use them too.

Connect with Other Educators

Another great benefit of using Instagram is the ability to connect with other educators . Connecting with other teachers is a great way to get new ideas, and it doesn’t hurt to meet a few new people as well. Many teachers of Instagram have connected with complete strangers who also share the same passion for teaching as they do. Others have found lifelong friendships with teachers who teach the same subject or same grade.

To find some educators that you can connect with, all you have to do is search the people or tags section of Instagram. For example, if you teach 6th grade and want to connect to other teachers in that grade, then all you have to do is go under the search option and type in “6th grade teacher.” You should also edit your profile so that others can find you. You can do this by adding what grade level you teach and any other relevant information about yourself in your profile bio. When you do this, it makes it easier for teachers who share the same interests as you to find you.

Access Teacher Resources

One of the most effective ways you can use Instagram is to create a collection of your favorite teacher resources that you find on Instagram. All you have to do is save your favorite photos, and you can create a collection and name it anything that you want. For example, you can have a collection of “teaching tips” photos or “organization” photos, and so on.

Instagram is a great resource for teachers, because it allows you to not only meet and connect with other people just like you, but it can help you find teaching ideas right from the comfort of your own home. You are essentially getting free professional development with the ability to collaborate and share with others.

Teach Students About Themes, Books, and Poetry

Teaching the concept of “themes” to students can be tricky. One way to get students engaged is to have them analyze the accounts of famous people, places, or businesses for “themes.” One industry that does a great job of constructing marketing “themes” is retail, such as clothing brands. Have students compare two recognizable brands, such as TJ Maxx and Gucci, and have them discuss the differences in the “story” each brand is telling. While both brands are selling the same thing—clothes—they tell very different stories.

Another great way to utilize Instagram in the classroom is to have students explore poetry and books through the platform. There are many “Instapoetry” accounts that have bite-sized poems students can analyze. They can ever try their own hand at writing “instapoetry” and compare their work with their peers. Instagram is also a great place for “book talk.” You can use Instagram to book talk using images or short videos for a digital twist. Try a fun assignment with your students where they create their own “book talk” post and share with their classmates each time they complete a novel.

Instagram can be a fantastic resource for teachers. From networking to resource sharing to classroom strategies and activities, the possibilities are endless. All you have to do is get creative!

How to Manage a Class Instagram

Slide1

This year, thanks to the fabulous guidance of Kristen from Easy Teaching Tools, I dove in headfirst with a Class Instagram for my Gifted and Talented Kindergartners, first graders, and second graders, and my students and parents are absolutely LOVING it! I started the year managing it myself, but now that we have a small class set of iPad minis, I’ve passed the torch to my students.  They absolutely love capturing their learning and sharing with their families! We share everything from photo collages to slide shows to time lapse videos of STEM challenges on our Class Instagram. It is a low-prep, engaging way to connect with students’ families while teaching and modeling digital citizenship. Here’s how to get started!

First and foremost, head over to Easy Teaching Tools on TpT to buy her Class Instagram pack. It has everything you need to request permission from parents, how to set up your account, and suggestions for management in your classroom.  I have to admit, I was hesitant to get started until I saw that all the hard work had already been done and put together in this little package!

You will need to set up a PRIVATE Instagram account, separate from your personal account, with a name for your class. Thanks to Instagram’s new settings, it is easy to switch back and forth between accounts so that you can post as well.  Send home the following letter to your students’ parents to request permission for students to be pictured on the account. Since I serve so many students, I also include the following blurb at the bottom of my monthly emails for any parents who might not have access to the account yet.  When parents request to follow the account, I approve them, but do not follow any parents back from the account.

Slide2

Next up, discuss and have your students sign the included Safety Pledge for Digital Citizenship. This is a great teachable moment about the importance of preserving privacy and integrity in your classroom.  Then, you are ready to get started! Choose 1-2 students per day to be your “Instagram Photographers.”  I have two of my iPads reserved for this purpose with the Instagram app installed, and I have them each marked with star sticker.  You may also choose to have one table of students as the Class Photographers for the day.  Students must compose a caption and appropriate hashtags before posting, and there are included sentence starters to help them compose a caption.  I always approve the captions and photos before students have permission to post. You may also choose to allow them to use photo editing apps such as Flipagram or Instacollage.

Slide3

In addition to posting to our Class Instagram account, I also print many of the pictures to hang on our hallway display.  You can order square 4 x 4 prints from most online photo sites such as Snapfish.

Slide4

As I change out my pictures, I move the old ones to various places in the classroom.  They make the perfect bulletin board borders!

Slide5

What are you waiting for!?! Engage your students and families with your own Class Instagram!

Can Instagram help students understand a 19th-century novel?

When I was in high school (back in the olden days), if I wanted to carry on a covert conversation in class, I had to undertake the dangerous work of writing and passing a note. For my students, such furtive exchanges happen via iPhone and are as often pictures or videos as they are texts. Where I would have written a paragraph (in cursive handwriting) about how boring my English class was, they send a SnapChat video of the boredom in process.

Of course my students — and Flintridge Sacred Heart students in general — are so enraptured by their studies that they would never do any such thing, but my point is more that our world is increasingly visual and that as responsible educators we have to reckon with this truth in our teaching: The world changes and so our classrooms and our practices as teachers must change.

I am a teacher of English and literacy is still the heart of what I do: I teach reading and writing, and the cornerstones of my English IV course are canonical great books such as “Jane Eyre” and “Hamlet” and more contemporary classics such as Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go,” and Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God;” my students still learn grammar and vocabulary and strategies of argument.

Rethinking Literacy: Written vs. Visual

But my definition of literacy has grown more expansive in recent years in response to the fact that human communication is becoming less verbal and more visual: We tweet or text rather than blogging or emailing— and more likely we post photos to Facebook or Instagram. Whereas the average city dweller 30 years ago was exposed to 2,000 advertising images a day, she’s now exposed to 5,000. And while the communication or journalism major of the days of yore might have aspired to being a cub reporter, she’s more likely now to have her sights set on a social media coordinator gig.

When my students are alienated by the many pages of sumptuous descriptive detail in “Jane Eyre” and suggest it might be a less soporific novel if this descriptive excess were excised, I ask them why they think Charlotte Brontë “wasted” so much time describing faces and dresses and dining rooms. And if they’re stumped by this, I ask them how many images they imagine Charlotte Brontë saw in the course of an average day in Haworth Parsonage. Not many, they know— hundreds, thousands less than they do.  Inevitably, they figure out that this is part of the gulf between their world and Brontë’s and the source of their difficulty with her. Description was once a pleasure to be savored, the means of drawing pictures in the mind when the world contained few.  My students’ world is image-saturated and their minds no longer build images from written description with the ease and pleasure of nineteenth-century readers, or even so easily as we who grew up without smartphones and streaming video do. I began to feel recently that I needed to find a way to alleviate this growing alienation, to get them to savor such descriptions, to attend to the particular details of a given scene.

Instagram as classic close reading assignment

Some part of my answer is a now two-year-old assignment: It was Instagramming “Jane Eyre” last year. This year, it’s Instagramming Ishiguro and Atwood. In some ways it’s a classic close reading assignment, but it requires students to produce an image rather than an essay and their work is graded on how accurately and eloquently they bring to life the passage of the novel they’ve chosen. They pick a particular scene or image from the text that they translate into an image— a photograph to be shared on our class Instagram. Their first task is collecting quotations from the scene: details of setting and mood, descriptions of the postures, props, and expressions of the characters in the scene. This task forces them to read with a rigor and depth of attention they may never have exerted before. It’s an exercise in slow, deep reading.

Kennedy Baca: Julia Severn. This is the scene at Lowood where Mr. Brocklehurst sees a child with curly hair and tells them it is necessary to cut it all off for modesty reasons. Although only in one scene Julia accurately reflects the neglect, ill treatment, and extremely strict moral code the girls received at Lowood. It is because of this strict moral guide Lowood instilled in the girls, especially Jane, that we see her struggle to follow her passions and natural wants VS what she believes to be moral through out the book. A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Aug 25, 2016 at 8:04am PDT

Then, we do a tutorial on the basic rules of visual composition: leading lines, strong triangles, the rule of thirds, figure to ground, framing, viewpoint and perspective, cropping, use of light and shadow, texture, color, black and white. We talk about casting and makeup and costumes and props, and making do when you don’t have, say, a nineteenth-century bonnet. We “read” film stills from a variety of “Jane Eyre” films. My students don’t know how much they know about how images work, but they’re quickly fluent with the new vocabulary. And then they go to work.

Ennie Gantulga (Block A): I picked Helen as my character for this project. So, I wanted to portray the scene when Jane surprises Helen by sneaking into her hospitalized room because I think this scene is full of emotion and reveals a lot about Helen Burns. Seeing Helen had gotten paler and thinner, Jane hugs her tightly and buries her face in her neck because she does not want her to leave. Contrasting from Jane, Helen is very peaceful and serene, even though she knows she is going to die. She speaks of her excitement to be embraced by God, while Jane holds onto her tightly until they go into a sweet slumber from which Helen never wakes up. A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Aug 25, 2016 at 12:18am PDT

From the creation of visual images come deeper insights

What they produce, as you’ll see in this post, is remarkable.  And I have found that their understanding of a scene achieves a subtlety and sophistication that many of them wouldn’t be able to access through a conventional close reading essay precisely because they’re more visually than verbally literate. Allowing them to “write” in visual language, a language they’re more fluent in and discerning about provides a scaffolding for deeper insights.  Intertwining visual and verbal literacy— the reading of literary texts and the reading and producing of images— seems to benefit both skill sets. The short talks they give about their artistic process and the significance of their chosen scenes are often some of the best work they do all year.

Darcy Michero. Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale (pg 164-169). This scene illustrates the sudden intensity and vulnerability between Offred and Ofglen at the Soul Scrolls, from Offred’s perspective. A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Aug 30, 2017 at 6:45pm PDT

More images from Ms. Wilkinson’s classes

Cate Doud “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. (Chapter 16) The scene that I chose was the initial Ceremony scene and this depicts Serena Joy grasping Offred’s hand, signifying that they are one and supposedly validating the morality of this practice. A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Sep 1, 2017 at 10:08am PDT
Sara Dardari (Block G): Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Pages 272-274. This picture represents the scene when Tommy was throwing his last tantrum as a donor and Kathy rushed out, “searched for his flailing arms, and held on tight” (Ishiguro 274). A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Sep 1, 2017 at 6:52am PDT
Serena Sampson: this picture portrays the first time Jane ‘formally’ meets Bertha Mason. Bertha is described as a disheveled woman with inhuman qualities and a demonic presence. She is growling and has clearly not done much to fix her appearance in a long period of time. “The maniac bellowed; she parted her shaggy locks from her visage and gazed wildly at her visitors” (Bronte 342) A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Aug 25, 2016 at 11:34pm PDT
Sydney Benjamin: I chose to do mine on Bertha Mason, and I focused on how she glares at everyone as they walk into her “room” before she attacks Rochester. A post shared by Emily Wilkinson’s English IV (@fsha.english) on Aug 25, 2016 at 8:48pm PDT

Exploring Instagram To Promote Student Engagement in an Online Didactic Environment †

Associated data.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher-education institutions to shift to nearly 100% online delivery of didactic coursework nationally. Besides the stress and isolation that many students experience simply due to the physical distancing requirements imposed by the crisis, students new to learning in an online environment may feel further isolated and disengaged from the course content. Consequently, we explored the use of an existing online social networking tool, Instagram, to enhance students’ engagement with online course material. In this study, students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate online science courses were invited to participate. Course instructors posted materials related to the topics covered in the course weekly sessions, including links to news reports, cartoons, and short quizzes. At the conclusion of each course, a questionnaire focusing on the students’ experience was distributed to all participants. Results from the survey showed that the weekly Instagram posts allowed students to feel more engaged with the course content and connected with the course instructors and classmates. However, some students reported that the posts were not helpful or that they did not feel comfortable using social networking tools for education purposes due to privacy concerns. In this article, we provide tips for how to improve the effectiveness of using social networking tools to augment didactic online courses.

INTRODUCTION

Creating an engaging online learning environment for students has become even more relevant owing to the almost complete shift to online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Student engagement is widely recognized as critical for high-quality learning outcomes and retention ( 1 , 2 ). A sense of belonging among students, especially in an online environment which may feel isolating, can play an important role in enhancing student engagement and performance ( 3 , 4 ).

The popularity and use of social media has increased irrespective of age, race, gender, income, and education ( https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/social-media/ ), and social media is increasingly being utilized for educational purposes ( 5 , 6 ). Seaman and Tinti-Kane surveyed nearly 2,000 college faculty and found that 80% report using social media in their courses, and the vast majority felt there was value in social media for teaching. Douglas et al. specifically focused on the use of Instagram in anatomy teaching and found 80 institutional and individual Instagram accounts with anatomy-related posts ( 7 ). However, similar to a literature review by Arnbjörnsson, they noted a lack of empirical data illustrating the impact on learning ( 8 ). Paton et al. also noted that despite limited research in this area, social media’s use may enhance the learning experience by allowing for greater connectivity among students and faculty ( 9 ). With the usage and popularity of Instagram, a photo- and video-sharing social networking platform, quadrupling since 2012 ( https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/social-media/ ), our study explored the use of Instagram to enhance student engagement and maintain their sense of community in an online didactic environment.

This study was approved as exempt by the GWU IRB board (#180778). Customized private Instagram accounts were created for online laboratory science courses following guidelines suggested by the institution’s Office of Communications and Marketing. To maintain student privacy, separate accounts were created for five different courses (undergraduate course: Molecular Diagnostics; graduate courses: Genetics, Microbial Pathogenesis, Advanced Immunology & Serology, and Advanced Molecular Diagnostics) and managed by the course instructors. Students enrolled in these courses were recruited via an e-mail announcement ( Appendix 1 ) sent through the Learning Management System (LMS). Since the Instagram course pages were private and unique to each course, students were asked to request access to follow their course Instagram account, which was then approved by the instructors. Once a week throughout the semester, instructors posted materials relevant to either the lecture or laboratory course content ( Appendix 2 ) in the Instagram account, such as:

  • Images of microorganisms, various disease symptoms, assays, lab tests, and how to interpret them
  • Short videos (less than 60 seconds) explaining concepts
  • Memes, fun facts, and cartoons to engage the fun aspects of science
  • Research article summaries covering key concepts being taught in class
  • Current popular news and media related to laboratory science
  • Short, ungraded quizzes on weekly content
  • Inspirational quotes about science

Students were encouraged to post answers to the quizzes, as well as share their thoughts about the posts. Instructors answered student questions and often posted an encouraging emoji for each student post. At the end of the semester, participants responded to a survey that included questions regarding demographics and perceptions on the use of Instagram in the course ( Appendix 3 ).

This study demonstrates that student morale and engagement in online learning was enhanced by using Instagram. Our findings show that 95% of the students ( N = 22), ranging in age from 20 to 54 years, had used social networking sites in the past, and 82% reported using them for educational purposes, suggesting that students are independently using social media to support their learning. Students in our study who did not use social media for education attributed it to privacy issues and distraction and preferred to keep their academic and social lives separate, a sentiment echoed by other educators ( 10 – 12 ).

Seventy-three percent of the participants in this study wanted to use social media during online learning, 45% agreed that the Instagram posts boosted their morale while learning, and 27% found the posts engaging, consistent with other studies demonstrating the benefits of social networks ( 13 , 14 ). Some students commented that their lack of engagement was due to not being active on Instagram and not always seeing the posts. Students who engaged with the content had positive comments: “I am less active on Instagram, but when I am on, seeing course-related content sparks thoughts about the topic,” and “When I saw the National Geographic – Your Genes post, I immediately went and bought the copy of the article to read in my spare time,” which demonstrates that building connection is an effective way to supplement online didactic teaching. It is encouraging to note that our participants did not have much time for leisure, as they were often full-time students working more than 20 hours/week, yet indicated their interest in using social media as an added tool for learning.

Some tips gleaned from this study to enhance the use of Instagram as a platform in online education:

  • Ensure appropriate institution guidelines on social media usage are followed. A communications or similar office is typically responsible for monitoring institutional social media accounts and is a great resource.
  • Plan and implement a frequent posting schedule as participants in the study recommended frequent posts to stay engaged. We posted once a week.
  • Ensure posts are relevant to the content being covered in the course to allow students to relate and connect with the content.
  • Check the feed regularly and respond encouragingly. We used the star emoji to acknowledge students’ posts.
  • Remind students through the LMS or by commenting on a post to respond to instructor and classmates’ posts to generate further discussions.
  • Ensure that quizzes and assignments, if used, are not complex or time-consuming. We used figures or short questions in our posts that students could solve easily and quickly.
  • Encourage students to submit current articles or research, but instructors should approve before posting.
  • We did not use hashtags, Instagram Stories, or Instagram Live due to our courses being private. However, these options are worth exploring to expand the audience base and connect with students in real time, while also increasing discoverability of the Instagram account if these align with your goals.

Our study suggests that Instagram can assist in forming connections between students and their peers as well as with their instructors, foster informal learning, and enhance student engagement in an online setting, which are critical educational components, especially due to the isolation students are experiencing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

48 Insta Captions For Studying At Home And Snapping Shelfies

Sorry, this weekend is all booked.

Some people are born to crack open the books and get studying. And congratulations to them. But for a good many, scrolling on TikTok sounds much more appealing than thumbing through chapter upon chapter of mandatory reading materials. Whichever category you fall under — or maybe you’re somewhere in between — staying on top of your assignments is easier when you've got a workspace you adore, and if it's picture-perfect, you'll need some studying captions for Instagram to go along with your favorite pens and highlighters. If your current desk at home is seriously lacking, this is your chance to give your space a total makeover and start fresh.

Some people like to study at their favorite coffee shop. If that's you, recreate that vibe in your kitchen or backyard with a delicious cup of coffee in a cool mug and a chill pop playlis t that totally sets the vibe. To get the campus library feel, make sure you have shelves to keep all your books in order. Organize them by title, or for something extra Insta-worthy, color-coordinate them. Then, add school spirit to your walls with campus artwork and banners. The studying captions are practically writing themselves.

Create a cozy space with a ton of vibrant lumbar cushions, or a modern WFH setup your friends will be jealous of with houseplants galore . Once you've got the perfect setting, you're ready to snap a studying selfie before diving into your to-do list. These 48 study captions will help you post and get right back to the books in no time.

The Loss of Things I Took for Granted

Ten years into my college teaching career, students stopped being able to read effectively..

Recent years have seen successive waves of book bans in Republican-controlled states, aimed at pulling any text with “woke” themes from classrooms and library shelves. Though the results sometimes seem farcical, as with the banning of Art Spiegelman’s Maus due to its inclusion of “cuss words” and explicit rodent nudity, the book-banning agenda is no laughing matter. Motivated by bigotry, it has already done demonstrable harm and promises to do more. But at the same time, the appropriate response is, in principle, simple. Named individuals have advanced explicit policies with clear goals and outcomes, and we can replace those individuals with people who want to reverse those policies. That is already beginning to happen in many places, and I hope those successes will continue until every banned book is restored.

If and when that happens, however, we will not be able to declare victory quite yet. Defeating the open conspiracy to deprive students of physical access to books will do little to counteract the more diffuse confluence of forces that are depriving students of the skills needed to meaningfully engage with those books in the first place. As a college educator, I am confronted daily with the results of that conspiracy-without-conspirators. I have been teaching in small liberal arts colleges for over 15 years now, and in the past five years, it’s as though someone flipped a switch. For most of my career, I assigned around 30 pages of reading per class meeting as a baseline expectation—sometimes scaling up for purely expository readings or pulling back for more difficult texts. (No human being can read 30 pages of Hegel in one sitting, for example.) Now students are intimidated by anything over 10 pages and seem to walk away from readings of as little as 20 pages with no real understanding. Even smart and motivated students struggle to do more with written texts than extract decontextualized take-aways. Considerable class time is taken up simply establishing what happened in a story or the basic steps of an argument—skills I used to be able to take for granted.

Since this development very directly affects my ability to do my job as I understand it, I talk about it a lot. And when I talk about it with nonacademics, certain predictable responses inevitably arise, all questioning the reality of the trend I describe. Hasn’t every generation felt that the younger cohort is going to hell in a handbasket? Haven’t professors always complained that educators at earlier levels are not adequately equipping their students? And haven’t students from time immemorial skipped the readings?

The response of my fellow academics, however, reassures me that I’m not simply indulging in intergenerational grousing. Anecdotally, I have literally never met a professor who did not share my experience. Professors are also discussing the issue in academic trade publications , from a variety of perspectives. What we almost all seem to agree on is that we are facing new obstacles in structuring and delivering our courses, requiring us to ratchet down expectations in the face of a ratcheting down of preparation. Yes, there were always students who skipped the readings, but we are in new territory when even highly motivated honors students struggle to grasp the basic argument of a 20-page article. Yes, professors never feel satisfied that high school teachers have done enough, but not every generation of professors has had to deal with the fallout of No Child Left Behind and Common Core. Finally, yes, every generation thinks the younger generation is failing to make the grade— except for the current cohort of professors, who are by and large more invested in their students’ success and mental health and more responsive to student needs than any group of educators in human history. We are not complaining about our students. We are complaining about what has been taken from them.

If we ask what has caused this change, there are some obvious culprits. The first is the same thing that has taken away almost everyone’s ability to focus—the ubiquitous smartphone. Even as a career academic who studies the Quran in Arabic for fun, I have noticed my reading endurance flagging. I once found myself boasting at a faculty meeting that I had read through my entire hourlong train ride without looking at my phone. My colleagues agreed this was a major feat, one they had not achieved recently. Even if I rarely attain that high level of focus, though, I am able to “turn it on” when demanded, for instance to plow through a big novel during a holiday break. That’s because I was able to develop and practice those skills of extended concentration and attentive reading before the intervention of the smartphone. For children who were raised with smartphones, by contrast, that foundation is missing. It is probably no coincidence that the iPhone itself, originally released in 2007, is approaching college age, meaning that professors are increasingly dealing with students who would have become addicted to the dopamine hit of the omnipresent screen long before they were introduced to the more subtle pleasures of the page.

The second go-to explanation is the massive disruption of school closures during COVID-19. There is still some debate about the necessity of those measures, but what is not up for debate any longer is the very real learning loss that students suffered at every level. The impact will inevitably continue to be felt for the next decade or more, until the last cohort affected by the mass “pivot to online” finally graduates. I doubt that the pandemic closures were the decisive factor in themselves, however. Not only did the marked decline in reading resilience start before the pandemic, but the students I am seeing would have already been in high school during the school closures. Hence they would be better equipped to get something out of the online format and, more importantly, their basic reading competence would have already been established.

Less discussed than these broader cultural trends over which educators have little control are the major changes in reading pedagogy that have occurred in recent decades—some motivated by the ever-increasing demand to “teach to the test” and some by fads coming out of schools of education. In the latter category is the widely discussed decline in phonics education in favor of the “balanced literacy” approach advocated by education expert Lucy Calkins (who has more recently come to accept the need for more phonics instruction). I started to see the results of this ill-advised change several years ago, when students abruptly stopped attempting to sound out unfamiliar words and instead paused until they recognized the whole word as a unit. (In a recent class session, a smart, capable student was caught short by the word circumstances when reading a text out loud.) The result of this vibes-based literacy is that students never attain genuine fluency in reading. Even aside from the impact of smartphones, their experience of reading is constantly interrupted by their intentionally cultivated inability to process unfamiliar words.

For all the flaws of the balanced literacy method, it was presumably implemented by people who thought it would help. It is hard to see a similar motivation in the growing trend toward assigning students only the kind of short passages that can be included in a standardized test. Due in part to changes driven by the infamous Common Core standards , teachers now have to fight to assign their students longer readings, much less entire books, because those activities won’t feed directly into students getting higher test scores, which leads to schools getting more funding. The emphasis on standardized tests was always a distraction at best, but we have reached the point where it is actively cannibalizing students’ educational experience—an outcome no one intended or planned, and for which there is no possible justification.

We can’t go back in time and do the pandemic differently at this point, nor is there any realistic path to putting the smartphone genie back in the bottle. (Though I will note that we as a society do at least attempt to keep other addictive products out of the hands of children.) But I have to think that we can, at the very least, stop actively preventing young people from developing the ability to follow extended narratives and arguments in the classroom. Regardless of their profession or ultimate educational level, they will need those skills. The world is a complicated place. People—their histories and identities, their institutions and work processes, their fears and desires—are simply too complex to be captured in a worksheet with a paragraph and some reading comprehension questions. Large-scale prose writing is the best medium we have for capturing that complexity, and the education system should not be in the business of keeping students from learning how to engage effectively with it.

This is a matter not of snobbery, but of basic justice. I recognize that not everyone centers their lives on books as much as a humanities professor does. I think they’re missing out, but they’re adults and they can choose how to spend their time. What’s happening with the current generation is not that they are simply choosing TikTok over Jane Austen. They are being deprived of the ability to choose—for no real reason or benefit. We can and must stop perpetrating this crime on our young people.

  • New business ventures to unlock a potential 2.5 trillion yen in additional revenues by fiscal year 2030
  • Significant next-generation EV cost reduction to be achieved through grouped “family” development, with vehicle production under the approach starting in fiscal year 2027

YOKOHAMA, Japan: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, today launched The Arc, its new business plan to drive value and strengthen competitiveness. The plan is focused on a broad-based product offensive, increased electrification, new approaches to engineering and manufacturing, the adoption of new technologies, and the use of strategic partnerships to increase global unit sales and improve profitability.

The plan is positioned as a bridge between the Nissan NEXT business transformation plan running from fiscal* 2020 through fiscal 2023 and Nissan Ambition 2030 , the company’s long-term vision. The new plan is split into mid-term imperatives for fiscal years 2024 through 2026, and mid-long-term actions to be carried out through 2030.

Nissan President and Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said: “The Arc plan shows our path to the future. It illustrates our continuous progression and ability to navigate changing market conditions. This plan will enable us to go further and faster in driving value and competitiveness. Faced with extreme market volatility, Nissan is taking decisive actions guided by the new plan to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.”

Under the two-part plan, Nissan will first take actions to ensure volume growth through a tailored regional strategy and prepare for an accelerated transition to EVs, supported by a balanced electrified/ICE product portfolio, volume growth in major markets and financial discipline. Through these initiatives Nissan aims to lift annual sales by 1 million units and increase its operating profit margin to more than 6%, both by the end of fiscal year 2026. This will pave the way for the second part of the plan aimed to enable the EV transition and realize long-term profitable growth, supported by smart partnerships, enhanced EV competitiveness, differentiated innovations and new revenue streams. By fiscal year 2030, Nissan sees a revenue potential of 2.5 trillion yen from new business opportunities.

Balanced product portfolio

Nissan plans to launch 30 new models over the next three years, of which 16 will be electrified, and 14 will be ICE models, to meet the diversified customer needs in markets where the pace of electrification differs. Nissan plans to launch a total of 34 electrified models from fiscal year 2024 and 2030 to cover all segments, with the model mix of electrified vehicles expected to account for 40% globally by fiscal year 2026 and rise to 60% by the end of the decade.

Ensuring market growth through a tailored regional strategy

In key regions and markets, Nissan’s actions by fiscal year 2026 (unless otherwise indicated) include:

  • Increase across-region sales by 330,000 units (in fiscal year 2026 and compared to fiscal year 2023) and invest 200 million USD in integrated customer experience in the U.S.
  • In the U.S. and Canada: Launch seven all-new models
  • In the U.S.: Refresh 78% of passenger vehicle line-up for Nissan brand and launch e-POWER and plug-in hybrid models
  • Refresh 73% of Nissan-brand models and launch eight new-energy vehicles (NEVs), including four Nissan-branded models
  • Target 1-million-unit sales in fiscal year 2026, representing an increase of 200,000 units
  • Start vehicle exports in 2025; Aim for 100,000 unit level
  • Continue to optimize production capacity with local partners
  • Refresh 80% of passenger model line-up, launching five all-new models
  • Achieve a 70% electrified level in passenger vehicle line-up
  • Increase sales by 90,000 units (compared to fiscal year 2023) to 600,000 units in fiscal year 2026

Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania:

  • Increase across-region sales units by 300,000 units (in fiscal year 2026 and compared to fiscal year 2023)
  • In Europe: Launch six all-new models; achieve 40% EV passenger-vehicle sales mix
  • In the Middle East: Launch five all-new SUVs
  • In India: Launch three all-new models and become a hub for exports, at a level of 100,000 units
  • In Oceania: Launch a 1-ton pickup and introduce a C crossover EV
  • In Africa: Launch two all-new SUVs and expand A-segment ICE vehicle

EV competitiveness

The product offensive will be supported by new development and manufacturing approaches aimed to make EVs more affordable and increase profitability. By developing EVs in families, integrating powertrains, utilizing next-generation modular manufacturing, group sourcing, and battery innovations, Nissan aims to reduce the cost of next-generation EVs by 30% (when compared to the current model Ariya crossover) and achieve cost-parity between EVs and ICE models by fiscal year 2030.

In the area of family development alone, the cost of subsequent vehicles – those developed based on the main vehicle in the family – can be reduced by 50%, the variation of trim parts reduced by 70% and development lead time shortened by four months. By adopting modular manufacturing, the vehicle production line will be shortened, reducing the production time per vehicle by 20%.

Under the Arc plan, more plants in Japan and overseas will adopt the Nissan Intelligent Factory concept, with the Oppama and Nissan Motor Kyushu plants in Japan, the Sunderland Plant in the UK and Canton and Smyrna plants in the U.S. starting the adoption from fiscal year 2026 through 2030. Meanwhile the EV36Zero production approach will be extended from Sunderland in the UK to plants including Canton, Decherd and Smyrna in the U.S., and Tochigi and Kyushu in Japan from fiscal year 2025 through 2028.

New technologies

The plan includes proposals to accelerate the evolution of vehicle intelligence technologies such as next-generation ProPILOT driver-assistance system, which realize door-to-door autonomous driving technology from on-highway to off-highway, private premises, and parking.

Nissan will offer enhanced NCM li-ion, LFP and all solid-state batteries to provide diversified EVs to meet different customer needs. Nissan will significantly enhance NCM li-ion batteries, reducing quick-charging time by 50% and increasing energy density by 50% compared to the Ariya. LFP batteries, to be developed and produced in Japan, will be launched that will reduce cost by 30% compared to the Sakura EV minivehicle. New EVs with enhanced NCM li-ion, LFP and all-solid-state batteries will be launched in fiscal year 2028.

Strategic partnerships

Nissan will harness strategic partnerships to stay competitive and offer a global portfolio of products and technology. Nissan will continue to leverage the alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors in Europe, LATAM, ASEAN and India. In China, Nissan will fully utilize its local assets to meet the needs of China and beyond; and explore new partnerships in Japan and the U.S. Batteries will be developed and sourced with partners to bring 135 gigawatt hours of global capacity.

Financial discipline to deliver resilient, profitable performance

Underpinning the plan is firm financial discipline, enabling stable CAPEX and R&D investment ratio versus net revenue of between 7% to 8% excluding battery capacity investment. Additionally, Nissan plans to invest more than 400 billion yen in battery capacity. Meanwhile, investment in electrification will increase progressively, becoming more than 70% by fiscal year 2026.

Managing these investments is aimed to allow delivering benefits to all stakeholders, with Nissan maintaining positive free cash flow before M&A – even after electrification investments. This is to secure total shareholder return at more than 30%. Nissan aims to maintain net cash at a healthy level of 1 trillion yen throughout the Arc plan period.

“Under this comprehensive plan we will enhance Nissan’s competitiveness and achieve sustainable profitability,” added Uchida. “Nissan is confident that it has what it takes to properly execute this plan, which will provide us with the firm foundation we need to bridge to our Nissan Ambition 2030 vision.”
