Essay on Kindness

500 words essay on kindness.

The world we live in today has been through a lot of things from world wars to epidemics, but one thing which remained constant throughout was resilience and kindness. Moreover, it was the spirit to fight back and help out each other. Kindness must be an essential and universal quality to make the world a better place. Through an essay on kindness, we will go through it in detail.

essay on kindness

Importance of Kindness

Kindness towards nature, animals and other people has the ability to transform the world and make it a beautiful place for living. But, it is also important to remember that kindness towards you is also essential for personal growth.

Kindness is basically being polite, compassionate and thoughtful. Every religion and faith teaches its followers to be kind. Most importantly, kindness must not limit to humans but also to every living creature.

Even nature has its own way of showing kindness. For instance, the trees grow fruits for us and provide us with shade. One must not see kindness as a core value but as a fundamental behavioural element. When you are kind to your loved ones, you create a stable base.

As people are becoming more self-centred today, we must learn kindness. We must try to integrate it into ourselves. You might not know how a small act of kindness can bring about a change in someone’s life. So, be kind always.

Kindness Always Wins

There is no doubt that kindness always wins and it has been proven time and again by people. Sid is a greedy man who does not share his wealth with anyone, not even his family members.

He also does not pay his workers well. One day, he loses his bag of gold coins and loses his temper. Everyone helps him out to search for it but no one finds it. Finally, his worker’s little son finds the bag.

Upon checking the bag, he sees all the coins are there. But, his greed makes him play a trick on the poor worker. He claims that there were more coins in the bag and the worker stole them.

The issue goes to the court and the judge confirms from Sid whether his bag had more coins to which he agrees. So, the judge rules out that as Sid’s bag had more coins , the bag which the worker’s son found is not his.

Therefore, the bag gets handed to the worker as no one else claims it. Consequently, you see how the worker’s son act of kindness won and paid him well. On the other hand, how Sid’s greediness resulted in his loss only.

Why Kindness Matters: The Importance of Being Kind

kind couple

Think about the last time someone was kind to you. Maybe a stranger held the door open for you or someone you love offered to help with a task you found daunting. How did that make you feel? Valued? Worthy? Happy?

It’s no secret that being kind feels good. It makes us feel connected, appreciated, and happy. But what many of us don’t realise is that being kind is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves and for others.

What is kindness?

Let’s first take a moment to define what kindness is. Kindness is an intentional act of compassion, thoughtfulness, and understanding that involves treating others with respect and empathy. This can include anything from lending someone a helping hand, volunteering for a good cause, or simply smiling at strangers on the street.

When we’re kind, we’re recognising, listening to, and understanding the feelings of others. We’re also trying to make their lives better in some way. When we strive to include more kindness in our lives, we’re sending a powerful message to the world that we care – for ourselves and for others.

Why is kindness important?

There are many reasons why kindness is important . These include both the personal benefits of being kind and the impact of our kindness on others.

Personal benefits

  • Kindness makes us happier. Kindness leads to happiness. Research shows that people who are kind are happier . The reverse is also true – happier people are kinder. And it makes sense when you think about it. When we’re kind, we’re focused on others. We’re not thinking about ourselves and our own problems. Our kind acts make others happier and witnessing that brings us joy. When we’re happy, we’re motivated to be kind and the cycle continues.
  • Kindness strengthens our connections. When we are kind to others, we strengthen those bonds of connection that make us feel seen, appreciated and loved. When kindness is given and received, it creates a sense of trust and connection. People are more likely to want to spend time with us and help us out too. Kindness is also a critical aspect of emotional intelligence. It helps us to better understand and empathize with others, showing them that we care about their feelings and experiences. This helps to build trust, create meaningful human interaction, and develop strong relationships that last.
  • Kindness improves our physical well-being. Practising kindness has been shown to have numerous physical health benefits. Kindness can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and even boost our immune system! People who practice kindness live longer, healthier lives.
  • Kindness makes us feel good about ourselves. Kindness helps to foster a sense of belonging and purpose. When we are kind, it reinforces our self-worth and importance and boosts our self-esteem. It reminds us that we have the power to make a positive impact in the lives of others, even if it’s in a small way. Kindness gives us the courage to stand up for what’s right. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that we are contributing to making the world a better place.
  • We remember to practise self-kindness. When we’re kind to others, we’re more likely to remember to be kind to ourselves as well. When we show self-kindness, we are less hard on ourselves. We acknowledge our faults and accept that we’re imperfect. We forgive ourselves for our mistakes. Accepting that we’re imperfect reduces negative self-talk and thoughts. We develop a more positive mindset and our overall mental health improves. We become more resilient, as we allow ourselves to overcome personal failures and learn from these experiences rather than define ourselves by them. As a result, we become more confident, secure, and content with our lives.

The impact of our Kindness on Others

When we practice kindness, it doesn’t just help us. It helps those around us as well. Kindness can have a ripple effect, spreading from individual to individual and making a positive impact on the world.

  • Kindness makes others feel good. Kind words, random acts of kindness, or even a genuine smile can brighten someone’s day and make them feel good. When we show kindness, it helps others to feel seen and appreciated. It lifts their spirits and encourages them to keep going when times are tough.
  • Kindness makes others feel safe. Kindness can help to create a safe, supportive environment where people are free to express themselves and be their authentic selves. When we’re kind to others, it makes them feel secure in our presence. It’s easier for them to open up when they trust that they won’t be judged or ridiculed for their thoughts or ideas.
  • Kindness inspires others to be kind. When people observe acts of kindness, it makes them want to be kind too. It encourages them to pass on the same kindness that was shown to them by paying it forward and doing nice things for others. They might even be inspired to do something that they wouldn’t have done before.
  • Kindness creates a positive environment. When kindness is practised in the workplace, it creates a more collaborative and supportive environment. People are more likely to work together and help each other out when they feel supported and appreciated by their colleagues.

What are some simple ways to be kind?

With all the great reasons to be kind , how can we make kindness a part of everyday life? Here are some easy ways to be kind :

  • Be considerate. Be mindful of how others are feeling and think before you speak or act. Do something that you know will benefit someone else, like holding the door open for someone carrying a heavy load or offering your seat on the bus.
  • Offer a helping hand. If someone is struggling, step in and lend a helping hand. Offer to help with a task or problem that they’re trying to solve. Be generous with your time and resources, including your knowledge and skills.
  • Show gratitude. Acknowledge and appreciate people for their efforts. Freely give compliments to those who deserve it and take the time to thank people for their help.
  • Be patient. Don’t rush others or jump to negative conclusions when things don’t go as planned. Instead, take a deep breath and be patient with yourself and others.
  • Be respectful. Always treat people with respect. Listen to what they have to say with an open mind and don’t talk down to them. Say please and thank you, and be polite to everyone.

As we practise these simple acts of kindness, remember that the importance of being kind is much greater than just making someone feel good. When we show kindness, it can have a positive ripple effect that changes the world for the better. In this way, even the smallest acts of kindness can have a big impact.

Final thoughts

Kindness is one of the most important things we can offer to others and ourselves. It makes us happier, healthier people, and it’s something that we should all try to cultivate in our everyday lives.

Showing kindness not only benefits those around us but also has a positive impact on our relationships, communities, and society as a whole. So whenever kindness is an option, always choose kindness . It matters.

a little dose of happy (aldohappy, “all do happy”) is a mission, mindset, and movement dedicated to spreading happiness throughout the world.

How kindness fits into a happy life, a new analysis of decades of research shows that when we are kind to others, we are healthier and happier..

We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. Kindness is an important virtue for sustaining relationships, which helps to build a trusting and cooperative society.

You may have also heard that kindness makes you happier and healthier. But what does that mean for you? What acts of kindness will make us happiest, and who tends to benefit the most?

A newly published review of decades of kindness research provides some answers.

genuine kindness essay

In this paper, researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200,000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data; some were experiments, where people did a kindness practice to observe its effects, while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in a variety of ways, including both mental and physical health.

As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui was surprised the relationship was not stronger than it was, but he was still encouraged by the results.

“Although the overall relationship between prosocial (kind and helpful) behavior and well-being is weak, given that so many people around the world act prosocially, the modest effect can still have a significant impact at a societal level,” he says.

A small effect like this—an average of all the participants’ experiences—can sometimes hide other patterns going on below the surface. So, he and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being.

One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness, like bringing a meal to a grieving friend, tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness, like volunteering in a soup kitchen. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for autonomy and close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness.

The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to be higher in “eudaimonic happiness” (a sense of meaning and purpose in life) more than “hedonic happiness” (a sense of pleasure and comfort). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort, which takes away from comfort but could make people feel better about themselves and their abilities, which would provide a sense of meaning.

Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says. Younger adults are at a stage of life where they tend to be figuring out their identity and actively seeking the purpose and meaning in life that kindness can bring, less so than pleasure and comfort.

What other, specific benefits might kindness have? The researchers found that people who were kind tended to have higher self-esteem and a sense of self-efficacy. To a lesser degree, they also experienced less depression and anxiety and improved physical health—with the links to health being strongest in older adults.

Hui doesn’t know for sure why acting kind might have these different effects on different groups, but he points to theories put forth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky : Being kind may make us feel better about ourselves as a person or about the meaning of our lives, confirm our self-competence, distract us from our own troubles and stressors, give us a warm-glow feeling, or help us be more socially connected with others. All of these could potentially improve our well-being—reducing our stress, improving our mood, or providing community—and they could hold more importance at different stages of life, too.

By understanding the connection between kindness and well-being, Hui thinks researchers can design better studies that take into account all of the relevant factors, and innovators could create more effective kindness practices. In the future, he hopes there will be kindness apps or online programs that could reach more people, generating a larger impact around the world.

In the meantime, Hui says, the biggest take-home from his research is something he heard the Dalai Lama say long ago: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

“Helping others is a universal virtue and a very affordable and economic way to benefit others’ and our own well-being,” he says. “As the saying goes, helping others is helping yourself.”

Kindness is a virtue that transcends cultural, religious, and social boundaries, universally recognized as a fundamental trait of humanity. It is often considered as compassion in action, a tangible manifestation of empathy and understanding towards others.

Kindness is an act stemming from a deep-seated sense of compassion and empathy towards fellow beings. It is not merely an act of benevolence but an expression of understanding someone else’s situation and extending help without any expectation of reciprocation. Kindness is a selfless act, often driven by a genuine desire to alleviate another’s suffering or discomfort.

Kindness and Compassion: An Inextricable Link

Compassion is an emotional response to the suffering of others, coupled with a desire to alleviate it. Kindness, in essence, is the action driven by this compassionate impulse. When we see someone in distress, our compassionate instincts trigger a reaction to reach out and help, and this act of reaching out is kindness. Hence, kindness is compassion in action.

The Practical Implications of Kindness

The practical implications of kindness are far-reaching and profound. Kindness fosters a sense of community and mutual respect among individuals. It promotes a culture of cooperation and understanding, making our societies more harmonious and peaceful. Moreover, research has shown that acts of kindness have a positive impact on the mental and physical health of the giver, as well as the receiver.

Kindness in the Modern World

In the fast-paced, competitive world we live in, kindness often takes a backseat. The focus on individual success and achievement can sometimes make us oblivious to the needs and struggles of others. However, it is in these challenging times that kindness becomes even more critical. It serves as a reminder of our shared humanity and the interconnectedness of our lives.

Kindness has the power to transform lives and societies. A single act of kindness can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to act kindly as well. It can break barriers of hostility and mistrust, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect. In a world often divided by differences, kindness serves as a bridge, reminding us of our shared human experience.

In conclusion, kindness is more than just a moral virtue; it is compassion in action. It is a testament to our capacity to empathize with others and our desire to alleviate their suffering. In a world that often emphasizes individual achievement and success, kindness reminds us of the importance of community, cooperation, and mutual respect. It is a powerful force that can transform lives and societies, fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. As such, it is incumbent upon us to cultivate and promote kindness in our lives and our societies.

Kindness Essay

Kindness is a valuable trait that can have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. It can help to build strong relationships, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve our physical health. However, it's important to remember that being kind can be difficult at times, and it takes practice and patience to make it a consistent part of our daily lives. Here are a few sample essays on kindness.

Kindness Essay

100 Word Essay On Kindness

There has been a saying that “be kind and do kind” means that be soulfully and mindfully kind so that you can do. Kindness is a type of behaviour that is marked by acts of generosity, consideration, rendering assistance or concern for others without expecting any praise or reward in return for the same.

Kindness is one of the main topics in the Bible, and it is a topic which is well taught and praised by every religion in the world. Nietzsche has said kindness and love are considered to be the "most curative herbs and agents in human intercourse". Not only this but there have been practitioners who have identified kindness as one of the most beautiful things to happen to mankind.

200 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness and love are closely intertwined, as one often leads to the other. When we act out of generosity and do something good for others, we are likely to receive similar or even greater acts of kindness in return. This is the principle of karma, where we reap what we sow. By being kind to others, we are able to empathise and put ourselves in their shoes, and in doing so, we are able to make a positive impact on their lives.

The practice of kindness has many benefits, not just for the recipients, but also for the giver. It can help to build friendships, bring joy and make life more fulfilling. In a world where competition can often be fierce, it is important to teach the younger generation the importance of kindness and generosity. By fostering these qualities in schools, we can help to create a kinder, more compassionate society.

There are countless books, articles and other resources that explore the topic of kindness in depth. But despite this, society as a whole has yet to fully embrace a culture of kindness on a broader level. By making a conscious effort to be kind to others, we can work together to make the world a better place for all.

500 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness is a powerful force that has the ability to change lives, both for the giver and the receiver. It is defined as the act of being considerate and caring towards others, and it encompasses a wide range of behaviors, from small acts of generosity to large acts of selflessness.

One of the benefits of being kind is that it can help to build strong and meaningful relationships. When we are kind to others, we demonstrate that we care about them and that we value their well-being. This can help to create a sense of trust and understanding, which are essential ingredients for any healthy relationship.

Another benefit of kindness is that it can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that acts of kindness can trigger the release of feel-good hormones in the brain, such as oxytocin and serotonin, which can help to improve our mood and reduce feelings of stress.

Additionally, kindness can also have a positive impact on our physical health. Research has shown that people who engage in acts of kindness on a regular basis have a lower risk of developing certain chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

One way to make kindness a regular practice is to set small and achievable goals for ourselves. For example, we can make a commitment to perform one act of kindness per day, or to make a conscious effort to be more understanding and empathetic towards others. Another way is to remind ourselves that kindness is not only about grand gestures, but also about small actions that can have a big impact on someone's life.

Personal Experience

I remember the day when a severe storm hit my village, leaving many of the houses damaged and people homeless. As I walked around the village, I saw the destruction and the despair on the faces of my fellow villagers. I knew that I had to do something to help.

I rallied my friends and together we set out to repair the houses and provide shelter for those who had lost theirs. It was hard work, but we were determined to help as many people as possible. We worked tirelessly, through the rain and the wind, never once complaining.

As we went from house to house, I could see the gratitude and appreciation on the faces of the people we were helping. It was a small act of kindness, but it made such a big difference in their lives.

Through our efforts, the village slowly began to recover, and the people were able to rebuild their homes and their lives. But the kindness we had shown was not forgotten. We had shown the villagers that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, and that through kindness and compassion, we can overcome any obstacle.

From that day on, I felt proud of my actions, and I realized the power of kindness. I had shown that one person's kindness can make a huge impact in the lives of many. I felt a sense of accomplishment and happiness that I was able to bring people together and make a difference.

Human kindness: why we need it more than ever

  • INSPIRATION & SPIRITUALITY

The world is a difficult place at the moment, so showing human kindness to others is more relevant than ever. But benevolence doesn't just benefit the person on the receiving end.  Dee Marques explains five key benefits we can feel of showing kindness to others.

A few weeks ago, I moved to a country where I didn’t know anybody and where I didn’t speak the language. Sometimes, even the smallest tasks feel unsurmountable due to the language barrier and the lack of familiarity with how things work. But often, I find that random passersby are willing to go out of their way to help me figure things out. When that happens, I’m reminded of the old saying, “Kindness costs nothing, but means everything”. Today, human kindness is needed more than ever. In this article I will explain why and will explore the benefits of showing human kindness at every opportunity.

What is human kindness?

According to the dictionary, kindness is the 'ability to demonstrate generosity and consideration towards others'. Kindness involves thoughtfulness, compassion and empathy , not only to people we know and love, but to anyone who may need it. In other words, true kindness is not selective; it’s shown to others irrespective of who they are, based on the understanding that we all have something important in common: being human.

Human kindness has been practised and valued since immemorial times. Although we may not be able to trace specific or individual acts of kindness thousands of years back in time, we have reason to believe that they have always been present in society, in the form of religious and/or spiritual beliefs, or as social norms and expectations. For example, Buddhism is known for the importance it attributes to kindness as an integral part of the human experience. The Buddhist practice of loving kindness or metta illustrates this, as it refers to selflessness, sympathy, and a benevolent attitude towards all sentient beings. This concept is often described as universal love. Other ancient religions, such as Confucianism , Taoism   and Hinduism also consider human kindness to be a core value.

what-is-human-kindness.jpg

Whether we’re religious or not, we can all agree that the world could do with more kindness. Perhaps we can’t control the levels of suffering caused by war, poverty, price hikes, COVID, and political or social division, but we can do our part to alleviate this suffering by showing human kindness whenever possible.

We only need to look at recent examples of kindness to confirm the truth in this. People in the UK have been taking in Ukrainian refugees and contributing to food banks, even though the average person’s finances aren’t particularly buoyant right now.

  • Shared humanity – why it matters
  • Random acts of kindness – 22 ways to spread happiness
  • The power of kindness – why being nice benefits us all

And the thing is, that gestures of kindness don’t have to be grand, they just need to be genuine. For example, in the town where I lived until very recently, there was an outage that kept our street block without electricity for 3 days, right during the hottest time of the year. People from nearby streets came up to our block and offered to keep groceries in their fridges, so they wouldn’t spoil. At the time, it was a huge help. So whether big or small, gestures of human kindness are all valid.

So, how can showing human kindness help you?

Sometimes, we’re so enmeshed in our own worries that we think we don’t have the time or energy to show kindness to others. This idea stems from a common misconception: that being kind to other humans only benefits on the receiving end of the kind act.  However, human kindness is so powerful that its beneficial effects actually extend to people who demonstrate it. The ripple effect is an important concept here. Psychologists use this concept to describe the far-reaching impact of acts of kindness, by comparing it to the effect caused by throwing a rock on a still body of water.

“Human kindness is so powerful that its beneficial effects extend to people who demonstrate it. By showing genuine kindness, we can can create ripples of loving feelings that may travel far into the world.”

By showing genuine kindness, we can create ripples of loving feelings that may travel far into the world – we never know who will be inspired by our actions. In fact, it’s not uncommon to witness an act of kindness and feel moved to do the same. Indeed, a study from 2018 shows that kindness can be contagious! What’s more, knowing we’ve done our best to contribute something positive can boost our feelings of contentment and connectedness to others. But the benefits of showing human kindness don’t stop there. Here are a five more ways in which being kind can boost your well-being:

1. Improves your mood

Contrary to popular belief, doing things for others can improve our mood in more powerful ways than doing things for ourselves. A 2016 study had two groups of people either do acts of kindness for others or treat themselves over a six-week period. Researchers found that the group that had been kind to others reported higher levels of positive emotions , whereas the other group didn’t experience any changes.

2. Reduces anxiety and stress

Health experts at the University of California have found that performing acts of human kindness releases oxytocin, also known as the love hormone . These acts also increase the production of the so-called happiness hormones , like dopamine or serotonin. This is important because low serotonin levels are associated with anxiety , stress  and other mood disorders.

3. Lowers inflammation and boosts your immune system

This infographic published by Darmouth College claims that people who integrate human kindness into their daily lives have lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is a powerful hormone that plays a role in virtually every process in our bodies, so imbalances are felt rather quickly.

Indeed, high cortisol can cause widespread inflammation, weaken the immune system, disrupt the reproductive system and cause digestive conditions. On the other hand, if acts of kindness can help to lower cortisol levels, helping you to fight inflammation and strengthen your immune system.

4. Improved self-esteem

A four-year study focused on adolescents  evaluated the effects of being kind to those who need help, for example, through volunteering . The findings, published in 2016, showed that all acts of kindness improved the participants’ self-esteem , irrespective of how big or small those acts were.

“People who integrate human kindness into their daily lives have lower cortisol levels... helping you to fight inflammation and strengthen your immune system.”

So, how does this happen? Possibly because being kind to others draws attention to the positives in ourselves and reminds us that we are making a difference to improve the lives of others.

5. More fulfilling relationships

In a world where suffering and indifference are the norm, showing human kindness can make you stand out among others as a person worth knowing and being friends with. To that effect, there are studies showing that kindness is more attractive that a good physical appearance , and that emphatic people activate parts of the brain that are key to solid relationship building.

Takeaway: shifting to human kindness

Today, human kindness is needed more than ever. We should all make an effort to not let our busy lives get in the way of altruistic behaviour and to reconnect with the innate gift of human kindness that lies within each one of us. When it comes to kindness, it doesn’t matter if the gesture is big or small, and there are endless ways you can choose kindness over darkness. So, embrace human kindness, make others happier and feel happier yourself.  •

Big 5 Personality Traits

Why kindness can be mistaken for weakness, the ability to be kind can actually be a show of strength..

Posted August 25, 2023 | Reviewed by Hara Estroff Marano

  • Many people seem to equate exhibiting kindness with having some type of weakness or deficiency.
  • People who question or even despise kindness may be expressing fear, low self-esteem, or unresolved pain.
  • There are multiple reasons why exhibiting genuine kindness is truly a sign of strength.
  • True power is the ability to help others rather than the ability to hurt or exact revenge on people.

Olga Pankova/Getty Images

Being kind has kind of gotten a bad rap these days. Maybe you've heard people tell you that if you are kind, people will take advantage of you or take you for granted. Or that nice guys or gals finish last. Or that kindness is weakness. Or that no good deed goes unpunished. Or that in dating , people go for the jerks rather than the kind. Yes, many people seem to somehow equate exhibiting kindness with having some type of weakness or deficiency. But that's kind of missing the point. It's actually the opposite. It takes strength and power to be truly kind.

Sure, there are people who act kind—with the emphasis on act —because they are trying to cover up some kind of deficiency. There are those who act kind when they're afraid to stand up for themselves and display their true jerky nature. There are those who feel that they have to kiss ass in the dating world just to get a kiss and more. Sure, there are those who act kind to manipulate others, which is kind of awful. And, yes, there are those who act kind simply because they are naive and view the world with gigantic deer-in-headlight eyes. Sure, when someone is acting all kind, it does make sense to question that person's motives and true nature,

But what about when being genuinely kind? Why then do others not respect you and even try to take advantage of you? More often than not, it's more about them than you. They frequently are the ones with the weaknesses or deficiencies. But it's not as if they were necessarily born that way. After all, how many 5-year-olds go around muttering, "I gotta be ruthless" or "Since that person gave me a cookie. I've lost all respect for him?" Instead, somewhere along the way, these folks have learned to question or even despise kindness. For example, maybe they:

  • Are fearful: Fear can do a number on people. It can motivate them to wrap themselves in layers of defense mechanisms to prevent anyone from doing, basically, anything. I once had a friend, whom we'll call Suspicious O' Everyone, who was, yes, suspicious of everyone. He effectively went by the motto, "Take advantage of people before they can take advantage of you." Take a wild guess as to why he's now once my friend.
  • Have low self-esteem : Deep down, many people don't believe that they actually deserve kindness. They may be the living embodiment of the Groucho Marx line, “I don’t want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members.” If you are acting kind to them, they may be thinking that there must be something wrong with you.
  • Are too jaded and cynical : People can be like cats, sitting around judging you. Always judging you. So, if you are kind to them, they may be thinking, "Hmm, what's the angle?"
  • Have unresolved pain: It can be a real pain when people mistake your kindness for something else. When people are in pain, they may feel the need to lash out at others. And it may be easier to lash out at someone who is kind than someone who is mean.
  • Are actually self-centered jerks: Some people are genuine 100% all-natural, free-range jerks. They can subscribe to the "it's all about me, all the time" kind of philosophy that ranks kindness somewhere below belly button lint in their list of things to be respected.

Malte Mueller/Getty Images

All five are actually reasons why exhibiting genuine kindness is a sign of strength. It means that you are able to overcome any type of fear, cynicism , or internal pain that you may have. It means that you are willing to go against the grain when people around you may not be willing to do the same. It means that you are willing to risk being taken advantage of and not respected and know that you have the strength to overcome such things. It means that you are driven by an internal compass and not an external one.

Moreover, true power is the ability to help others rather than the ability to hurt or exact revenge on people. Practically anyone can hurt other people. All you need is an anonymous social media account. That is not the case with helping people. Really helping others is not as easy but, frankly, is a lot more fulfilling.

So, why not be more kind, genuinely kind? Why not kind of go against the grain? You may have heard that 1979 song "Cruel to Be Kind." In actuality, it can be quite cool to be kind.

Rachel McAdams Is Not Afraid of the Dark

The actress makes her Broadway debut in “Mary Jane” as the single mother of a seriously ill child. She views her acting choices as expanding her orbit.

From the outside, you wouldn’t know that Rachel McAdams, the thoughtfully charming star of blockbuster rom-coms, rom-drams, a Marvel franchise and the Oscar-winning “Spotlight,” has been wondering about death.

Maybe it has to do with the therapist who said that her indecisiveness and deep curiosity about seeing through someone else’s eyes, which she’s harbored since childhood, could be chalked up to something called “death anxiety.”

McAdams had long viewed her acting choices as expanding her orbit. “It’s been a way to live a lot of lives in one,” she said. If that was about a fear of dying — well, it didn’t rattle her.

Instead, characteristically, she embraced it. “We don’t have a lot of great coping mechanisms for death in our culture,” she said. “So, yeah, I kind of welcome the opportunity to lean into that — earlier rather than later. Let’s get cozy with it. Let’s get cozy with that next adventure.”

Death hovers like a specter around her latest role, as the single mother of a seriously ill child, in the play “Mary Jane.” McAdams hasn’t done theater since college; she makes her Broadway debut as the title character in this Manhattan Theater Club production, which began previews April 2 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater. It’s by the busy playwright Amy Herzog , who also adapted Broadway’s show of the moment, Ibsen’s “ An Enemy of the People. ”

“Mary Jane” is the first of her own deceptively spare plays to appear on Broadway, after a celebrated run in 2017 at New York Theater Workshop. Dotted (surprisingly) with laugh lines, it’s about the daily muck and lasting profundity of caregiving, a nitty-gritty subject that’s rarely dramatized. “A heartbreaker for anyone human,” Jesse Green wrote in his New York Times review.

Four other women, playing double parts, round out the cast. The drama revolves around 2-year-old Alex, always offstage, whose condition is signified by the constant attention of medical staff, and by Mary Jane, a beam of light amid unyielding malady. In a dramaturgical challenge, the antagonist is invisible but all-encompassing: It’s “the American health care system,” the director, Anne Kauffman, said.

McAdams, who has a son, 6, and a daughter, 3, with her partner, the screenwriter Jamie Linden, had no personal experience with the fraught universe “Mary Jane” describes, of lengthy stays in the neonatal intensive care unit and vigilant on-hold-forever insurance calls. That’s what drew her, she said. “I wanted to explore this world and crack this open for myself,” then bring it to the stage. She couldn’t put Herzog’s script down, or get it out of her head. “It was just undeniably powerful, and felt necessary,” she said.

Following her career-catapulting back-to-back roles in “The Notebook” and the original “Mean Girls” two decades ago, McAdams, 45, has slowly reoriented her professional life around what feels necessary. Since 2016, that has meant: not very much. Doing one project a year can feel fulfilling, she said, “if you really throw yourself in.”

We met in a Midtown coffee shop one recent morning before she hustled to rehearsal. In sneakers, a gray fuzzy sweater and a child-made beaded bracelet that read “mama,” with a blond-chestnut mane that she swept around as she talked, she was hiding in plain sight as a mom-on-the-go.

Given her work, she was quick to cry these days, she said. But laughter also came easily, as our conversation circled around having similarly aged kids — McAdams, too, is fluent in reward charts and the fervent belief that our lives will be freer when our children put on their own socks. (“The last frontier,” she said. “Socks.”) Though some details were private — asked where she lives, she replied, “the South” — she was open about organizing her career so she could be, as she put it, “fully immersed with my kids.”

In Hollywood, taking a step back can mean audience amnesia and producer disinterest — but McAdams braved it before, at the height of her fame in 2005, when she thought things were moving too fast. “I try not to worry about becoming obsolete or irrelevant,” she said, “because I feel like nothing good comes out of fear.”

Even as she has chosen smaller and less showy parts — like the mother in the 2023 adaptation of Judy Blume’s “ Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret ,” her last big-screen role after a stint in the “Dr. Strange” series — McAdams symbolizes the rare combination of superb performer with superstar charisma and down-to-earth bona fides. (Witness last year’s three-episode cameo as herself in the absurdist FXX comedy “ Dave .”)

“She has that gear where she can kind of keep going,” said Tom McCarthy, the director and a writer of “ Spotlight ,” for which McAdams earned an Oscar nomination playing a Boston Globe journalist investigating abuse in the Catholic Church. (The film won best picture in 2016.) Her performance, finely tuned to the habits, and khaki wardrobe, of the real reporter she played, Sacha Pfeiffer, can still deliver a wallop with one look .

Even her emotive listening lands, wordlessly. “She makes that incredibly compelling,” McCarthy said. “Some of that is craft, and some of that is who she is.”

For Herzog and Kauffman, McAdams’s offscreen demeanor propelled her into the role of Mary Jane. “She has a sunniness and a kindness that is so constantly present, and a wryness,” Herzog said. “She embodies so many of the things that I wrote.”

Herzog and her husband, Sam Gold (who directs “An Enemy of the People”), lost a daughter with a rare muscle disorder, nemaline myopathy, in 2023. Herzog said she wrote “Mary Jane” when their child was a few years old, and it reflects some of the specialists who cared for her, in their humor and expansive capacity for problem-solving.

Her hope was to capture not just the medical realities and systemic hurdles of having a critically ailing child — the futility, in other words — but also the joy, determination and faith. “I think there is a hunger out there for people who have this experience to see it reflected in some ways — and reflected not as a tragedy to be pitied, but as a lived experience with a lot of complexity,” Herzog said.

In rehearsals, the production called in experts: a music therapist, a rabbi, a critical care doctor; research that McAdams appreciated. “Normally I have to kind of hustle all that on my own,” she said. (Preparing for Season 2 of “True Detective” in 2015, she went on late-night ride-alongs with Ventura County police.)

The “Mary Jane” cast has found the process therapeutic, and personal. April Matthis, last on Broadway in “The Piano Lesson,” plays a doctor and nurse; her own mother was a labor and delivery nurse, and Matthis recalled the way she upheld her patients’ dignity.

In McAdams, Matthis found a more genuine and giving partner — in real life, a hugger; in character, a “work wife” — than she ever expected. “Like getting in a warm bath, is just how her presence is,” Matthis said.

McAdams grew up a couple of hours outside Toronto, the eldest of three; her mother was a nurse and her father, a mover. By 7, she knew she wanted to act, and once given the reins, succeeded quickly, though she stayed in Toronto, living with her brother or sister, well into her early celebrity.

She retains an essential people-pleasing Canadianness. An acting job lifted her out of college. “I still have nightmares because I didn’t finish my final projects,” she said. “I wake up in cold sweats, like, ‘Oh, I have to play a goddess!’”

Her childhood friends are still her inner circle, said her sister Kayleen McAdams, her makeup artist on “Margaret,” a family job magnified because they were both nursing mothers at the time.

The sisters live on the same street in their small Southern town, where they have conjured what sounds like a takes-a-village utopia.

“We’re just so often being like, ‘hey, I’ll start making lunch, and you run and pick up the kids, and then they’ll all have lunch together, and then, and then, and then,’” Kayleen McAdams said.

Becoming a parent, Rachel McAdams said, made her a better actress: “You just have to be quick on your feet, and completely believe it.”

As we left the coffee shop, a “Mean Girls” fan approached, asking for a photo for his girlfriend (so often for the girlfriend, McAdams noted). She gladly posed, and afterward conjured a whole narrative about the couple. “You always remember who you saw a good movie with, right?” she said.

“The Notebook” is now a Broadway musical , which she expects to bawl through (reading the original script, “I couldn’t stop crying” she said); “Mean Girls” is a certified juggernaut (a musical, and a movie musical , both hits). That they are still part of the cultural conversation has kept her in fans’s minds, even in the absence of social media and the kitchen table selfies and skin care lines that float other selectively-working actresses.

Though her break from the spotlight convinced her that she would be fine if Hollywood stopped calling — returning to teach theater in her hometown “would make my mother very happy” — she views her profession with gravity. “It’s almost our duty,” she said, “to tell enlightening stories or shine a light on corners of the world that desperately need it,” like the characters in “Mary Jane.” “I also think it’s our job to entertain.” ( “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga ,” her last broad comedy, came out early in the pandemic.)

But no matter McAdams’s facility for wringing laughs, “Mary Jane” is sheathed in sadness, and performing it takes a toll. The cast and creators have all dealt with its weight differently.

For Herzog, who lived it, everything changed. “The frameworks I had in place before having a sick kid were a psychoanalysis or a class analysis,” she said, “and neither of those are terribly useful in a situation of anguish.” Her characters turn to spirituality and religion.

Kauffman, who has shepherded the play since its workshops, said it briefly sent her back to temple. Doing the show, she said, “I really understood, for me, what God is. It absolutely comes from the care-taking aspect of this.”

Matthis, too, said she found its portrayal of devotion illuminating. “It’s a real muscular love,” she said. “Part of the reason why I’m so drained is because it’s so moving, and so beautiful.”

McAdams, who takes Buddhist meditation classes, saw in the play the value of community, and of holding space for the unknown. Herzog, she said, is “exploring all kinds of reactions to the things we come up against in life, and doesn’t try to make them all make sense, which I love.”

“To me,” she added, “this play isn’t just about taking care of a child. It’s about taking care of each other.”
