Sparks stun first-place Liberty, halt 7-game skid

Dearica Hamby scored 21 points as the host Los Angeles Sparks snapped their seven-game losing streak by shocking the league-leading New York Liberty 94-88 on Wednesday night.

The Sparks (7-24), who were ahead most of the game, led by 14 in the opening quarter, and three days after blowing a 22-point lead in a 113-110 loss to the Dallas Wings, they did enough in the fourth to get their first win since July 13.

Rookie Rickea Jackson added 19 points and reserve Rae Burrell contributed 11 of her 18 in the fourth as the Sparks shot 51.5 percent from the field and topped 90 points for the fourth time this season.

Breanna Stewart led all scorers with 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting but the Liberty (26-6) lost for the second time in three games following an eight-game winning streak. New York saw its lead over Connecticut for the WNBA's best record trimmed to three games. Stewart scored 15 points in the fourth, including nine in the final minute.

Sabrina Ionescu added 18 points and Nyara Sabally contributed 14 as the Liberty shot 50.8 percent but committed 20 turnovers, resulting in 29 Los Angeles points. Courtney Vandersloot handed out 13 assists but New York allowed its second-highest point total of the season and yielded at least 90 points for the third time this season.

The Sparks held a 26-14 lead through the opening quarter and had a 46-39 lead by halftime. Vandersloot's layup forged a 55-55 deadlock with 3:13 left in the third. Ionsecu's 3-pointer put New York ahead 63-62 with 48.1 seconds left but Los Angeles took a 67-63 lead into the fourth.

Consecutive 3s by Burrell gave the Sparks a 77-68 lead with 5:52 left, and Los Angeles held an 82-74 edge on Burrell's 3-point play with 2:49 remaining. An Odyssey Sims' basket pushed the lead to 87-74 with 1:41 to go and the Liberty were within 92-87 after Stewart hit a 3 with 17 seconds left. Two seconds later, Stephanie Talbot sank a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Sparks hold off Liberty rally, knock off top team in WNBA and snap losing streak

It’s been a rough season for the Sparks, and they found themselves in another dogfight on Wednesday, this time against the New York Liberty, the team with the best record in the WNBA.

Instead of a second-half meltdown like the one they suffered against the Dallas Wings on Sunday, they punched back en route to a 94-88 win at Crypto.com Arena.

“Super proud of these guys tonight,” Sparks coach Curt Miller said. “Less than two weeks ago, coming out of the Olympic break on national television, [we] just did not compete real well against this same New York team. So for us to step back up, especially after the disappointment from Dallas, it just says so much about this team’s character.”

Every time Liberty stars Sabrina Ionescu or Breanna Stewart made a play, someone on the Sparks would step up to get momentum back. Whether it was Rickea Jackson hitting a three, Dearica Hamby driving to the hoop for a tough layup or Rae Burrell knocking down a jumper, the Sparks always had an answer.

“We’ve consistently shown three quarters out of four quarters, with any team, we’re the better team on the floor, but we haven’t been able to close games,” Hamby said. “So this is what we’ve been talking about. … Down the stretch, we emphasized, ‘We got to close this game, we got to close this game. We got to get stops,’ [We] just gutted it out.”

Jackson, who came off a career-high 25-point performance on Sunday, got the Sparks off to a quick start with 13 points in the first quarter to help the team build a 26-14 lead.

“I don’t know how many games in a row it is now that she has gotten us off to great starts.” Miller said of Jackson. “We’ve played through her a lot and she’s had great first quarters. She is really, really special at the offensive end, and it’s only going to get better.”

Sparks guard Kia Nurse guards New York Liberty forward Kayla Thornton at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday.

The Sparks thrived on defense through the first two quarters, forcing 12 turnovers and scoring 18 points off of them, leading by as many as 14.

And when the Liberty came roaring back in the second half, Hamby (21 points, six rebounds and five assists) and Burrell (18 points and five rebounds) stole the show. They drove the final nail in the coffin late in the fourth when Burrell was fouled on a turnaround jumper, made the shot and converted the free throw to tie her career high in points and extend the Sparks’ lead to eight points. Hamby cut through the defense on the next possession for the layup to put the Sparks back up by double digits and seal their eventual win.

It’s the Sparks first victory since July 15, snapping a seven-game losing streak, and their first home win since July 5. They are far from vying for playoff contention, but a statement win against the best team in the league can build some momentum — and confidence — for a young squad down the final stretch of the season.

“Championship teams … they take time,” Hamby said, referring to her experience on the Las Vegas Aces. “... So we know it’s a process. We think we have key pieces, we’ve shown that we have key pieces in our young team. Just keep building, we’re not necessarily focused on winning a championship this year, but [we’re] just focused on building for the rest of the season and for next year.”

Liberty visit Sparks for duel of first place vs. last

The New York Liberty experienced some sluggish moments on Monday night in their game against the Phoenix Mercury before making enough plays down the stretch.

Share Video

With nine wins in its past 10 outings, New York hopes to play a more complete game on Wednesday night when it visits the league-worst Los Angeles Sparks .

New York (26-5) holds a three-game lead over the Connecticut Sun for the best record in the league, though it might be reduced by tip-off since its closest pursuer is visiting the Indiana Fever earlier Wednesday.

The Liberty saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end with a rough offensive showing in a 72-64 loss vs. Connecticut on Saturday. After scoring its fewest points all season against the Sun, New York pulled away for an 84-70 victory on Monday by outscoring the Mercury 25-17 in the fourth quarter.

Breanna Stewart scored 21 points while Courtney Vandersloot had a season-best 16 for the Liberty. Jonquel Jones added 15 and Sabrina Ionescu scored 13 in her second game back from a neck injury.

New York finished with 12 steals and forced 22 turnovers.

"In the second half, we moved the ball like we were supposed to," New York coach Sandy Brondello said. "That allowed us to move downhill and attack closeouts on the second and third side. That's more fun for them to play and more fun to watch."

The Sparks (6-24) are in the final weeks of the worst season in team history and their fourth straight losing campaign.

Los Angeles is on its second losing streak of at least seven games this season after being unable to keep pace defensively with the Dallas Wings in a 113-110 loss on Sunday in the finale of a four-game road trip.

Among the losses during this current seven-game skid was a 103-68 defeat to the Liberty on Aug. 15, but in their past five games, the Sparks have an average margin of defeat of 7.4 points. In Dallas, the Sparks held a 92-73 lead through three quarters -- when they were shooting 62.7 percent overall -- but wound up getting outscored 40-18 in the final frame.

Odyssey Sims scored 26 points off the bench, rookie Rickea Jackson added 25 and Dearica Hamby contributed 21, but the Sparks allowed the most points in a single game in the WNBA this season.

"You better own (it) when you are having a poor year," Sparks coach Curt Miller posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "I own it, need to be better for our young team."

Liberty Sparks Promoting Freedom in Tanzania

NFS supported Liberty Sparks programs in 2020 including the translation and publishing of 2 primer type classical liberal books, a webinar series, a student essay competition, journalist training, a conference and a six series radio programme

  • 2 books were translated, published and disseminated.  1400 copies printed.
  • 2000 CDs were printed and distributed,
  • 900 + participated in their webinar series,
  • 50 Journalists attended training,
  • 109 essays were submitted and judged,
  • 25 students attended training,
  • 6 radio programs broadcast monthly for 6 months,
  • 80 people at conference with many more on line,
  • Around 300 people have attended sessions to explore and discuss the ideas in the books.

Covid forced them to move many things on line earlier in 2020 but their new Free Societies online webinar series has been very popular and introduced them to new audiences despite some unreliability of the internet connections at times.

The Liberty Sparks journalist project had to be amended because those participating struggled to produce the required  good quality articles so instead it was turned into  a 4 session training project to help the 30 journalists improve the quality of their articles.     https://www.facebook.com/LibertysparksTZ/videos/120143796398931 .

Their 6 month radio program series also was amended because of the difficulty of finding appropriate material relating to markets, property and freedom and also the right presenters. People were nervous about promoting views about freedom etc live.  Then they ran into legal challenges precluding the programs from also being posted on YouTube. Nevertheless they produced a monthly programme each run twice and next year will register themselves so all the content can go on YouTube to greatly increase their audience.

They have translated and published two books in Swahili in the expectation of meeting a new Swahili speaking audience.  These include the Institute of Economic Affairs/Eamonn Butler books  Adam Smith a Primer and An introduction to Capitalism which are available on line  and with hard copies explored and shared with university and other groups when they are also given a copy of one of the books.

Their Caravan of Ideas team have promoted the books and explored their content with many groups.  About 300 had attended these events in 2020 and already in 2021 they are very popular.  CEO of Liberty Sparks, Evans Exaud said enthusiastically that “Translation has helped us get so many supporters in social media and Universities administration. The books are well understood and as an organization; we got a lesson, therefore we have changed some of our posts as well to be in Swahili. We have received so a good deal of good feedback to the translation project, and we can’t thank you enough.”

In November Liberty Sparks ran Uhuru.con, a full days conference both in person and on line where the essay winners were announced. 80 attended in person to exchange ideas and strategies on how to achieve a freer more prosperous future for Tanzanians but sadly due to Covid many who had applied were unable to attend including 40 who had signed up from Kenya. But many of them joined on line.

Answers Unearthed Regarding Spark’s Dissappearence

liberty sparks essay competition 2021

Outside of Williams Stadium a statue of Liberty’s Mascot stood tall, offering a salute to passersby. Many students and visitors frequently visited the eagle, a popular photo-op on campus.

In recent weeks, however, only Sparky’s feet remain, begging the question: what happened to Sparky?

Several students and staff theorized about renovations or simply a removal of the beloved statue. Some had crazier theories ranging from sabotage from rival schools to campus pranks.

What really happened was a run-in with a rollerblading Liberty freshman.

This freshman takes laps around campus on her roller blades every week.

“As I roller blade, I generally like to give Sparky a high five as I go by,” she said.

High-fiving Sparky became a ritual she looked forward to on her trips.

“This time, when I just tapped his hand, he fell over. I took out Sparky,” she said.

Sparky fell backwards leaving only his feet and the metal rods inside sticking up. Her and a friend tried to set Sparky back up but could not resurrect the damage.

Instead, they called LUPD to come and take care of the fallen statue.

“I still don’t know how I knocked it over,” she confessed. “There were metal rods sticking out. There’s no way I broke those with a high-five.”

LUPD concurred – also wondering how the high-five could knock over a statue.

Richard Hinkley, Chief of Police, confirmed that  the high five caused the statue to break at the ankles and fall to the ground.

“Damage was not repairable and the statue was removed from the area,” Hinkley said.

After LUPD removed Sparky, they came back with two traffic cones to cover the exposed metal rods for safety reasons until they could also be removed.

An interview with Liberty University’s landscaping division offered no information on when Sparky may be repaired or return.

“We never expected someone to knock Sparky over,” a representative of the Landscaping department said. “We don’t know when he’ll be back up.”

Sparky had the metal rods inside to keep him standing upright. With the way he was knocked over, he will have to be rebuilt almost completely to stand back in his former spot of honor.

LUPD does not have any answers on his repairs or return.

“The roller blader definitely wasn’t alone in her assassination of the statue,” someone from LUPD joked. “But so far we don’t know what we’re going to do with him.”

They hope to see Sparky back in his place someday, but an official plan to restore Sparky and set him back up has not been solidified.

Sparky’s return may be unknown, but hopefully all Liberty students can learn something in the meantime – be careful who you high-five while on skates.

Remaking African institutions to foster entrepreneurship at #AfricaLF21

The reality of continued international travel restrictions in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic led Atlas Network to host each of its four Regional Liberty Forums online in 2021—this time all in the same week in June. The action-packed week kicked off with a deep examination of entrepreneurship in Africa at Africa Liberty Forum 2021 (#AfricaLF21). With over 232 think tank and civil society professionals representing 29 countries in attendance, a rich dialogue was facilitated, despite the circumstance of convening virtually. Attendees were as much a part of the excitement as winners when the Regional Liberty Award and Think Tank Shark Tank champions were announced.

Each session of the 2021 Africa Liberty Forum will remain available online, and below are some highlights of the event.

Welcome Remarks

The forum kicked off with a welcome from Atlas Network CEO Brad Lips and Aimable Manirakiza, founder and CEO of the local co-host, Centre for Development and Enterprises–Great Lakes. Manirakiza expressed his excitement for working with African organizations to help create a better, freer, and more prosperous future for the continent.

After the opening remarks, Atlas Network Director of Institute Relations Casey Pifer spoke with several leaders in the African freedom movement about what the pandemic has meant for everyday life and personal and economic liberty in Africa. Olumayowa Okediran of Students For Liberty (Nigeria) spoke about how the Nigerian government followed the lead of other countries on lockdowns instead of evaluating how factors like demography might require a different strategy. He pointed out that Nigeria’s population is very young and therefore not at particular risk for COVID-19.

Phumlani Majozi of AfricanLiberty.org was originally in favor of lockdowns to allow the healthcare system to prepare for the pandemic, especially given the high rate of HIV in South Africa, but changed his mind as the timeline progressed and the government healthcare monopoly failed to respond adequately to the situation.

Bruce Vaillant Ntangibingura of CDE in Burundi expressed optimism that the pandemic response would give think tanks an opportunity to gain more attention in their fight to open international trade and break up government monopolies, which CDE has already had success in doing.

Big Ideas: Africa Reimagined

Led by Ibrahim Anoba of Atlas Network’s Center for African Prosperity, the Big Ideas portion of the 2021 Africa Liberty Forum focused on how African leaders can build a better Africa.

Anoba was joined by Aimable Manirakiza, Christo Hattingh of Free Market Foundation in South Africa, and Kofi Bentil of IMANI Center for Policy and Education in Ghana to discuss how Africa can grow its economy and assert its independence among the geopolitical ambitions of powerful nations such as the United States, China, and the EU bloc.

The panelists concluded that free trade was an essential part of this equation, but that politicians should not be the ones negotiating trade deals, as their incentives do not necessarily match up with what is best for their countries. Private actors and civil society organizations need to be given a stake and a say in the process.

Interview of William Kamkwamba

During the day one finale of #AfricaLF21, Magatte Wade, director of Atlas Network’s Center for African Prosperity, interviewed William Kamkwamba, discussing why Africa needs to allow for greater innovation and entrepreneurship. Kamkwamba has extensive experience starting his own businesses and helping others start theirs in his home country of Malawi, and he was the subject of the Netflix documentary “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.”

liberty sparks essay competition 2021

Kamkwamba told Wade that poor institutional environments in Africa hold people back from prospering as entrepreneurs. Unrealistic and burdensome registration processes discourage or altogether prevent many Africans from starting profitable businesses.

Things are getting better in some parts of the continent, however. Rwanda has followed in Singapore’s footsteps of reforming institutions to encourage business growth. Kamkwamba was optimistic that similar reforms across Africa would raise millions more people out of poverty.

Regional Liberty Award

After Wade and Kamkwamba’s discussion, Tanzania’s Liberty Sparks was announced as the winner of the 2021 Africa Liberty Award and its $7,000 prize.

Through their Wezesha Biashara (“Improving Business”) project, Liberty Sparks has helped remove barriers to entrepreneurship in Tanzania. They collaborated with researchers, the government, and the public in planning their campaign, which sought to reform policy and remove regulation in order to aid small businesses and encourage new entrepreneurs. The campaign has resulted in Tanzania’s Revenue Authority making it easier for Tanzanians to pay their taxes and instituting less punitive tax collection methods, including removing the fines and interest on unpaid taxes.

liberty sparks essay competition 2021

Other finalists included the Centre for Development and Enterprises–Great Lakes, for their Fungua Njia (“Open Road”) campaign to remove barriers to trade between Burundi and other African countries; and African Students For Liberty, for their AfricanLiberty.org project, which trains student writers to get their work published.

Africa Think Tank Shark Tank

At the close of day two of the 2021 Africa Liberty Forum, Ibrahim Anoba returned to the stage to announce Rejoice Ngwenya of Coalition for Market and Liberal Solutions (COMALISO, Zimbabwe) as the winner of the 2021 Africa Think Tank Shark Tank competition. Ngwenya pitched the #MyTitle4Life project, which will fight cyclical poverty by providing property titles to inner-city Zimbabweans, giving them access to financial institutions and a tangible way to improve their lives.

liberty sparks essay competition 2021

Ngwenya competed against two other pitches. The first was from Bruce Vaillant Ntangibingura of Centre for Development and Enterprises–Great Lakes, who presented his Fungua Njia (“Open Road”) project to open trade between Burundi and its neighbors. #MyTitle4Life was also challenged by Henri Kouam of Nkafu Policy Institute and his prospective Nkafu Open Trade Initiative, which seeks to educate policymakers, members of government, and the public about what Cameroon must do to make the most of the recent African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement.

Closing Remarks

For the closing session, Ibrahim Anoba was joined on stage by Martin Van Staden of the Free Market Foundation in South Africa, Feyisade Charles Adeyemi of Nigeria’s Chale Institute, and Rejoice Ngwenya of COMALISO in Zimbabwe to discuss constitutionalism in Africa.

Their consensus was that written constitutions inherited from colonial powers are not inherently powerful enough to ensure personal liberty. Ngwenya stated that African nations need to develop institutions to enforce constitutions and to defend human rights when states fall short.

An important topic within the discussion was the right of private citizens to own firearms, a right that is being eroded—especially in South Africa. This erosion points to the insufficiency of constitutions to keep governments in check. It is up to think tanks and civil society groups—like many of Atlas Network’s partners—to encourage the formation of informal institutions that protect individual rights.

Roma communities in Perm Krai: historical and ethnical aspects

Profile image of Dmitrii Vaiman

Two large groups of Roma are settled in the territory of Perm Krai, the Ruska Roma and Kalderari. Roma live both in cities and countryside. Roma living in the countryside keeps elements of traditional culture. In Perm Krai we can find different families of the Ruska [Russian] Roma: Gorbovichi, Nemzengery, Bashnengery, Polyaki, Sapuny, Gubany. In contrast to the Kalderari the community of Ruska Roma is based not only on family-territorial principle. Sometimes community is based on ethnic-territorial ground when the Ruska Roma living in an urban area despite family ties can be a part of the community. Traditional activity of Ruska Roma living in countryside is a seasonal grazing of livestock. One of the main sectors of activity is trading. Roma sell cars and jewelry. Kelderari live in compact groupings in Perm. They call themselves Moldavska Roma and consider themselves to be part of Ruvoni [wolf in Romani language] family. Traditional activity of Kelderari is metal work (especially tin-smith’s work) which impact also their modern business. The main work activity of men till now is working with metals such as base metal trading and metal items repair. Traditional women activity is fortune-telling. Bilingualism, traditional way of living, ethnic isolation, unique and particular material and spiritual culture are common for all of Roma. The main problems for Roma nowadays are safeguarding of ethnicity and as well as some educational and social issues.

LANDSCAPE AND BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY OF PROTECTED AREAS NETWORK IN PERM KRAI

  • 1 Perm State National Research University, Russia

The problem of creating the systems of specially Protected natural Areas (PA) adequately representing the geographical diversity of different territories has been acute. Creation of the territory nature protection systems always requires comprehensive assessment of the representativeness of the existing PA network. In Perm region the only such research was carried out at the end of the last century. Since then, the region borders, structure and PA network size, as well as the structure of natural resource use have significantly changed. In this study we assess the representativeness of the PA network of Perm region. For this purpose the representation of the PA network on landscape and biodiversity was analyzed. The study identified the endowment of natural areas and the representation of wetlands in the PA network in the region. Protected species of plants and animals which need development of measures for the territorial protection were identified. The size of the PAs necessary to develop the nature protection network was calculated.
