You can't, but you can get an A without it. Just do everything else for the class, take notes or actively listen in class, and raise the skill the class is for. I got the message that it was returned, but it never showed in inventory, family or otherwise.

If there isn't one in build/buy then I'm pretty sure you can get one at one of the university item kiosks that's at the universities. You should be able to buy it from the Kiosk. I lost homework when my sim studying at a festival.
