How do I delete an Assignments submission?

Once a file has been successfully submitted to an assignments, you can’t delete it. However, if you have the ability to make another submission, re-submit the file and make sure to also contact your instructor and let them know that you are re-submitting a file to the assignment.

If you don’t have the ability to make another submission, contact your instructor and let them know that you would like to re-submit a file to the assignment.

Navigating Assignments on D2L

Quick start guide:.

Students use the Assignment tool to upload and submit assignments to assignments in D2L Brightspace to provide their work to their instructor.
  •  From the course navigation bar, click Assessment and then click Assignments.
  • Underneath the assignment title, there may be date restrictions – open or close dates and times show the availability for that assignment.
  • Completion Status – Displays your attempts on an assignment as well as any files you have submitted with that attempt. Click here to view the materials you submitted as a part of that assignment attempt.
  • Score – The score you earned on your assignment.
  • Evaluation Status – Feedback from your instructor on your assignment attempt.
  • Due Date – A due date is the deadline of an assignment in your course. This date is specific to the assignment only. After the due date has past, you may be able to submit an assignment, but it will always be marked as late.

You cannot access an assignment before the open date or after the close date.

Navigating assignments, submitting assignments on d2l.

  • From the course navigation bar, click Assessment and then click From there, select the assignment you want to submit. The Submit Assignment page will show you any instructions or rubrics for your review.
  • Type your response in the text box that appears on the screen. Click Submit on the bottom of the page to turn in your response, once you have finished.
  • On the Review Assignment Submission page, you will receive confirmation on your assignment submission. You can then click Done . You will also receive email confirmation that you have submitted the assignment.

  • These types of assignments are completed on paper or in person, and require no upload on D2L

What is likely happening is that you are submitting Pages documents instead of Word documents to D2L. Instructors cannot typically open .pages files, resulting in that error. Please use the link below for instructions on converting Pages documents to Word documents.

Viewing Assignment Feedback on D2L

Viewing assignment feedback user guide:, click here to access: viewing assignment feedback on d2l (learners).

  • From the course navigation bar, click Assessment and then click Assignments.
  • Once you have located your desired assignment, click Unread in the Evaluation Status column.
  • If your instructor added an annotated feedback file to the assignment, click View Inline Feedback. The annotation feedback file opens in a new tab, displaying annotated feedback on a PDF file that may include highlighting, free hand drawing or shapes, text comments, and pop-up notes. To download the annotated assignment as a PDF, click Download .
  • If there are any feedback files, click Download All Files to download feedback attachments.
  • When you are finished viewing the annotated feedback, navigate back to the View Feedback page and click Done .

D2L Brightspace annotation feature.

D2L Brightspace now has an inline annotation feature in the Assignment tool. Using the Annotation Tool in D2L Brightspace allows you to annotate document submissions inside of your course without having to download anything.

Deleting a student's assignment submissions.

If your assignment is   not   set to accept multiple submissions, it is often necessary to delete the submission.

If you would like to delete a student's assignment submission attempt and allow them to re-submit, you can do so using the following steps:

  • Log into D2L and go to the desired course.
  • Click on   Assignments   from the Assessments drop-down menu.
  • Identify the assignment in which you would like to delete a student's submissions.
  • Click the little arrow that follows the assignment titled and select   View Submissions .
  • Once on the   View Submissions   page, scroll down and identify the student and their submission.
  • Check the box next to the student's name and then click the   Delete   link or the   trashcan   icon located above the table of student names.
  • Before the assignment is actually deleted, you will be asked to confirm your decision. Click the   Yes   button.
  • Once the submission is deleted, the student will be able to re-submit the assignment as long as the End Date has not yet expired.

Remove all content in your D2L course

If for some reason, a full course reset isn't possible, there is an alternative method for removing material from different parts of your course. Follow the steps below that correspond to the area in your course in which you want to delete content.

Delete Announcements

To begin, click on your course homepage and locate the Announcements widget.

  • Click the Announcements action menu and select Go to Announcements Tool .

  • Check the box at the top to select all the announcements and click Delete .
  • Click Yes on the confirmation window. Repeat the process if you have more announcements.

Delete Course Files

  • From the navbar, go to Course Admin .
  • Click on Manage Files .
  • Check the box at the top to select all the folders and files and click the Delete icon.

  • From the navbar, go to Content and select Table of Contents on the left side.
  • Click the action menu from Table of the Contents at the top and select Delete All Modules .

To submit to an Assignment / Dropbox:

Within your course, select Assignments/Dropbox (the name may vary based on your institution).

How to delete a Dropbox submission

Once a file has been submitted successfully to the Dropbox Folder, you cannot delete it.

For your next steps:

  • The folder allows for an unlimited number of submissions.
  • The folder only keeps the most recent submission, and removes the others.
  • The folder only allows a single submission.
  • Submit the newer file.
  • Contact your instructor and let them know of your resubmission.
  • Contact your instructor and inform them you would like to resubmit the file.

An error message appears when accessing a Dropbox folder

This error may occur if you do not have access to the linked Dropbox folder.

If you encounter an error message, contact your instructor to inform them. They must correct the link so that it directs you to the correct Dropbox.

How to confirm that a Dropbox submission was successful

 There are 3 ways you can confirm that your submission was successful.

Every submission sends an email to your account confirm the file was submitted.

  • Depending on your school, this may be sent to either your school email or your Brightspace email.

The Dropbox tool allows you to review all your submissions by clicking View History.

Choose a folder from the Dropdown, and click Apply.

The Submissions column shows how many submissions you've made to each folder.

  • Clicking on the number will show your submissions to that folder.

Your file does not finish uploading to the Dropbox

This is often the result of attempting to upload a file that is too large.

Try the following to resolve the issue:

  • If you are using Wi-Fi, switch to a wired internet connection.
  • Switch an Internet connection with a faster upload speed.
  • NOTE: We recommend first confirming whether your instructor has allowed you to make multiple submissions to the dropbox.
  • Compress the file

Error message appears when uploading a file

This issue can occur if there is an Illegal Character in the name of the Document that you are trying to upload: (Ex. "@:#$%^>).

To resolve this issue:

  • Open the document on your computer.
  • Click Save As.
  • Ex. Rename a document from "War&Peace".docx to WarAndPeace.dox.
  • Try uploading your document again.
