A Guide to Posting Your Resume Online With Google Docs
So you’ve researched, prepped, streamlined and finalized your resume. You’re now ready to start sending your work of professional art out into the career space to let it reap the rewards of a job offer. When it comes to submitting your resume to potential employers, modern job-seekers have a wealth of options beyond the traditional envelope stuffing of yesteryear.
And sure, you’re more than welcome to send your resume off as an attachment to a potential employer, but that approach is far less advanced and convenient than modern sharing platforms, like Google Docs.
Posting your resume on Google Docs can yield a variety of benefits:
- Easily send a link to your resume rather than bulk digital attachments
- Collaborate with professional colleagues for resume review
- Create a permanent, easily editable home for your resume for future additions and editing
Posting and sharing your resume via Google Docs is easier than you’d think. All you’ll need is a Gmail email address and a little bit of know how. Don’t let any lack of knowledge of the Google platforms scare you away. Read below for our step by step guide to posting your resume online.
Instructions:
- Head on over to the Google Docs main page ( http://docs.google.com/ ). Here you’ll be prompted to either create an account or sign up for a new one. Don’t have a Google account already? Never fear, we’ve got the handy link for Google sign up here.
- After you’re logged in, you’ll see the main Google docs page. If you’ve recently created your account, you won’t see any specific items. Now it’s time to get to creating and filling this space up. Click on the handy red circular plus sign to create a new doc. Your default choice will be the word processor. Google Docs also has a wide selection of handy templates, including resumes. You can also add existing files by selecting the file picker option and browsing your computer for your resume.
- Spend some time exploring the navigation bar located above the live typing area. Here you’ll find plenty of plain sense formatting options as well as print and download features. Google docs allows you to download your completed resume in a variety of popular formats, including Microsoft Word.
- Once you’ve finished your edits, it’s time to choose the privacy options for your document. Click on the “Share” button in the upper right corner of the page. Here is where you will be able to select who can view and/or edit your resume. Here we break out the most common sharing options:
- Private: Only yourself and people you have specifically invited can view the document. If you’re in the drafting stages, this may be the best bet until your resume is shiny and polished.
- You can enter email addresses directly for people who you’d like to receive the link to your document. You can also create a custom link to our document which can be easily pasted into an email or message.
- Anyone with Link Can: Use this to decide what people who have the link to your resume can do with it. Can they view, edit, or only comment? Be sure to check out the advanced options for fine tuning your document privacy.
- When you’re ready to share your resume, simply ensure you have the correct sharing settings and copy the URL. Your recipient will be able to easily access your document from any computer and most mobile devices.
See, that wasn’t so hard now, was it. Now that you’re a Google Docs pro, get to sharing that resume!

How to Create and Upload a Resume Online
Options for Online Resumes
Create a resume online, save your resume file, upload a resume online, create a resume website, send your resume in an email.
Because so much of the job search process is online, you need to be prepared to design a resume that works for the web and send it through the appropriate channels.
Depending on which jobs and employers you’re targeting, this might mean sending your resume via email or uploading your resume to a job search or company site.
Employers care whether or not you follow directions, and they generally want employees who are technologically savvy. Therefore, it pays to learn as much as possible about the right ways to format and send your resume before you apply.
Some job search engines allow you to create a resume using their own resume builders . These walk you through the process of creating your resume, section by section, and format it. For example, job seekers who use Indeed can create a resume online in a variety of formats including Word, PDF, RTF, TXT, and HTML.
Once you have created a resume using a job search engine resume builder, the site will allow you to share it with employers on the same job search engine. When you apply for jobs on the site, you only need to click on your saved resume.
Make sure you download a version of the resume you create online. This way, you will have a version on your computer you can use and edit even when you are not online. You then can email and print your resume to share it with employers and networking contacts at any time.
It's important to have a professional resume that is easy to read and successfully highlights your skills and experience, but when saving a resume file for uploading, it's also important to make sure it is easily accessible for potential employers.
Think about the resume title. Whether you upload your resume as an email attachment or on a job search site, the employer will see the title of your resume . A good title will simply include your name and the title of the job for which you are applying. Another option is to include your desired title or career field, and a very brief (3-5 word) summary of what makes you a strong candidate. For example, your title could be “HR Manager–10 years of experience.”
Avoid generic titles like “Resume,” or, even worse, “Resume 2,” which implies you are applying to so many jobs that and can’t keep track of all your materials.
Make sure the document can be opened. Follow any directions the employer or website asks about what format your resume should be in . Make sure to follow directions to avoid annoying an employer.
Think about the level of privacy you want. If you are uploading a resume to a job search site, you likely will be asked whether or not you want the resume to be posted publicly. The benefit of a public resume is that employers can see your resume, and can reach out to you if they think you might be a good fit for a job. However, if you are still at your current job and don’t want your employer to know about your job search, make your resume private. When it is private, only you can decide which employers see your job materials.
Make sure the format is consistent. When you upload a document online, there is always a risk that the formatting will change.
Always look at a preview of the downloaded document before publishing or emailing it.
Make sure the format is consistent, and that there are no awkward gaps between pages or changes in font or style.
You may need to upload your resume online for a variety of reasons during your job search, and each reason might require a slightly different strategy for uploading the document.
If you do not create a resume using an online site's resume builder but still want to post it to the site, you will have to upload it. Some sites will include a text box where you simply can copy and paste your resume or type it in directly. If you do this, make sure that the format of your resume stays the same. You may have to edit your resume within the text box to make sure it still looks professional.
However, some job sites don’t let you play with the formatting of the text in the text box. In that case, don’t worry about what it looks like, because it will be consistent with the other resumes in the database.
If you do not paste your resume, you will have to upload it. Typically, you will see a button that says “Upload” or “Upload Resume.” Click this button, and then click through your computer folders and files to find your resume, wherever you have it saved on your computer.
Sites typically will list the file formats they accept, so be sure your resume is saved in one of those formats before uploading.
Here are some of the sites where you can upload your resume or a candidate profile to help broaden your exposure to hiring managers and recruiters.
Another type of online resume is one that is made and accessed only online and typically has its own URL. It could be a standalone site or a component of your personal website .
This kind of online resume allows you to include images and even interactive infographics . You can embed links to other sites related to your work, such as your LinkedIn account, a website you developed, or an article you published. You also can include your work on multiple pages, creating a portfolio of your work.
Depending on your industry and the type of job you are interested, an online resume can be a great way to highlight your skills and experience in a manner that is more visually appealing and engaging than a traditional resume. It also can show off your skills in web development or design, if these skills are relevant to your field.
However, keep in mind that many employers prefer more traditional resumes that are submitted as Word documents, PDFs, or other more typical formats. Be sure to only create an online resume if you know the employer would appreciate this and if you think it shows your relevant skills.
Generally, if you are submitting your application via email, your email message will include your cover letter or at least a brief explanation for why you are writing. Then, you will attach your resume to the email :
- To attach your resume, click the “upload” or “attach files” button on your email message.
- In some email platforms, this button is a picture of a paper clip.
- Click the button, and then click through your computer folders and files to find your resume.
If the employer has requested that attachments be in a certain file format, be sure to upload your resume in that format.
You usually want to avoid copying and pasting your resume in an email unless specifically asked to do this. It often looks messy and unprofessional. Also, without a message attached to the email, the employer will not know why you are sending the resume to him or her.

How to Create a Resume Using Google Slides
A side from using Google Slides to create presentations, you can also use it to create resumes. Google Slides’ drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to create custom layouts and perfectly position any text, images, and videos you want to add. So, let's take a look at the easiest and fastest way to get this done.
Create a Resume Using a Google Slides Resume Template
The easiest way to create a one-page resume in Google Slides is to customize a template. Here’s how.
Step 1: Find a Suitable Resume Template
Google Slides' template gallery does not contain specific resume templates. But, there are sites with a variety of Google Slides templates to choose from. For this example, we'll use a template from SlidesMania.
- Go to SlidesMania.com .
- Type “CV” or “Resume” in the search bar to find resume templates.
- Browse the results and click on your chosen template.
- Click Open in Google Slides .
- Select Use Template in the top right corner.
Step 2: Make a Copy of the Template
If the template is set to view-only, you'll need to make a copy to edit it. Even if the template is editable, creating a copy allows you to keep the original version intact.
- Select the slide you’d like to copy. If you want to copy multiple slides, click on the first slide, press Ctrl on your keyboard, and then select any additional slides.
- Go to the File tab, click Make a copy , and select either Entire presentation or Selected slides .
- Enter a name for your new copy, select the folder you’d like to save it, and click Make a copy .
Step 3: Customize the Template
Customizing the template includes editing the text in text boxes, changing the appearance of text boxes, updating the profile image, and swapping out icons. Let's go through each step one by one.
- Double-click on a text box, edit the text, and click outside the text box area to save.
- To delete or duplicate a text box, right-click on it and select Delete or Copy .
- If you copied, right-click in an empty area and select Paste . Then click and drag the text box to your desired location.
- With the text box selected, change the font, font size, and text color to match your preferences.
- Change the appearance of the text box by adjusting its fill color, border weight, border dash, and border color.
- Click the profile image and select Replace image .
- Select Upload from computer if your photo is saved on your device. In the file explorer pop up, choose your photo and click Open .
- To fit your photo into a different shape, let’s say a rectangle, click the dropdown arrow by the crop image icon, select Shapes , and pick the rectangle.
- With the image selected, click the crop image icon to reposition your photo within the shape. Zoom in for precise adjustments and hit Enter on your keyboard when you’re done.
- Click the reset image icon if you want to undo the masked shape applied to your photo.
- To add more icons or swap out existing ones, download icons from any of the free SVG icons websites as PNG files.
- Go to the Insert tab, click on Image , and select Upload from computer . Select the icons and add them to your resume.
- Click and drag the icons to your desired position.
If you’re applying to multiple jobs, tailor your resume for the different job types and proofread your resume for errors to boost your chances of success.

AI, online gaming among the top cyber threats to kids
Americans under age 20 saw 2,500% increase in money lost due to online scams from 2017 to 2022.
(InvestigateTV) — According to a study by the DQ Institute , almost 70% of children worldwide were exposed to at least one cyber threat in 2023.
David Emm, a principal security researcher at cyber security company Kaspersky , highlighted the top five online threats for children and adolescents.
Bank cards for children : These financial products are designed for kids as young as 12 and make kids easily susceptible to financially motivated scammers.
Smart home devices : These items are easily accessible by children, so make sure to regularly change the passwords. Also regularly inspect monitoring devices, like doorbell cameras and baby monitors, to ensure they have not been hacked.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI is quickly becoming ubiquitous, with a new study revealing about 25% of children use some form of AI on school assignments.
“What we need to understand, I suppose, with these large language models, is that we are feeding them with information, and that information can be brought out of those systems as well,” Emm explained. “So, we need to be really careful, I think, about the sharing implications, something which children are not really going to think about.”
AI apps can provide children with inappropriate content, so monitoring AI use is crucial for parents.
Online gaming : Chat functions combined with anonymity make kids an easy target for online scammers. Teach children to not share personal information with anyone online or to click on unknown links.
“It’s really the fact that there may be people that they’re interacting with who are not who they say they are, or they are who they say they are, but that they’re potentially a threat,” Emm emphasized.
Trendy apps : Fake iterations of popular apps are often created to trick users. These apps can contain malicious links for software designed to scam users.
Emm’s overall message to parents is simple:
- Stay informed about the latest cyber security threats.
- Talk to children regularly not sharing personal information.
- Do not click on random links.
